Just listened to this, sat back and forgot about everything, I love it when that happens...

I saw Melanie De Biasio do this live at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2017, she extended this piece to half hour or so, and it was pretty impressive.
Has a great breathing technique and really transmits her inner soul to it. It was very sparse with lots of atmosphere. Quite ECM ish..
I have it on vinyl (only came as a 12" EP) and whilst I like it, it was much better live, with her theatrical on stage style. (there maybe a live video on you tube of her performing)
Her other material is very interesting and good too. She was remixed and messed with on an alternative Lp. of material by some big producers.
Inspired to dig this out an have a listen over the weekend.

Yeah, you're probably right Lawrence. I just don't remember that, is all. We saw the Preservation Hall band live once...may have been a tuba in there...it was a long time ago. Definitely don't recall it being front and centre like this one though.

Duke Robillard with special guests that include Maria Muldaur, Jay McShann and Mary Flower.
Think this was Duke's first all acoustic album and he has been going for over 50 years... very good it is too, with a real jazzy flavour at times.

I have this too, paid fifty bones for it! Much as I like it, I seem to spend more time changing the discs than actually listening. Production and pressing first rate. Inspire Hi Fi were playing it to death a few years ago, that's where I first heard it.

Good one Grant. Knew you'd like it. Personally, Chicago blues are my favourite. I just love the straight-ahead boogie quality of it. Can't sit still listening to that stuff. Years ago I watched the Ken Burns documentary History of Rock and Roll, and he highlighted the Chicago blues influence on early British rock bands -- Rolling Stones, Zepellin, Clapton and his gang. He contrasted the two by playing back to back tracks and the similarity was remarkable. Apparently the British guys really studied that style and took to it wholeheartedly. Pretty cool how this style influenced the biggest rock bands in the world.

Very nice lady, I have met her several times as her brother runs a garage that I used to use. I have also heard her sing live several years later times, a good blues singer.
Lucky you. I've been buying her stuff since she started making re ords. Think she comes across as very personable

Excellent album Grant! Love this bluesy Ellington sound.
EDIT: just listened again at my desk, and while I haven't looked at Ellington's bandmates for this record, the unmistakable sound of Paul Gonsalves comes through. Especially on Pie Eyes Blues. Amazing player. Can't think of another sax player who has the unique signature that he does.
Got lots of the Duke. Marvellous stuff much of it. Trouble is ive got too much stuff, and what with tidal etc it means you forget to play stuff you love

A recent acquisition, being a big Wether Report fan I purchased this their second album as it was a good price. It is somewhat different from the later more popular albums, quite avant-garde in parts, with elements of a discordant feel. Still is distinctive as Weather Report.

Django Bates on piano and Nasheet Waits on drums at the Barbican in london, performing the Blue Maqams lp... just phenomenal!! (See what you miss Marco living so far from the smoke !)

You are most welcome John. This really is a great thread. One of the best things about it is that no one who contributes here is in the least bit judgmental about other's choice in music, or has airs of superior taste. No one-upmanship, and conversely no seeking of praise or affirmation. Very pleasant and respectful, all of it.
That said, some of the guys here really know their jazz, and it's possible to learn a lot from them.
Feel free to add your own old favourites or new discoveries to the chat. You live in an area (the American south) with a rich jazz and blues tradition. Is there a lively local scene in your town or nearby? Any young up-and-comers that we should hear? Part of the fun is hearing artists from other parts of the world that we may never have known about if not for a shout-out here. For example, I've introduced the guys to a few Canadian musicians (e.g. Jane Bunnet, Emilie-Claire Barlow, etc.), and in return I have picked up on some terrific UK artists (Matthew Halsall, Go Go Penguins) which I really enjoy.

He only recorded about 30 songs, many of them here.. all around late 20's early 30's. He became a minister but died quite young after his home burnt down and he had to sleep outdoors.
Blues indeed.. good gravelly singer and decent slide guitarist too, and this cd is quite clear for the music's age.

Memphis country blues festival. Based around buckka white but some tracks have guest slots including Nathan Beauregard, Furry Lewis and Robert Wilkins to mention just 3.
Beauregard is yet again a musician who got overlooked all his life up until about 2 years before he died in 1970 or so. Bill Barth, who helped found the Memphis Country Blues Society was responsible for his and many others late career starts.

And that is what I like about groups such as Chicken Shack. :) Anyway, they along with John Mayall, were my introduction to the Blues, which lead me on to discover and appreciate the original Blues performers of the US. I agree I have one of their albums and it’s great from first to last track. On the edge of rock but not still in the blues. Another like this if Johnny Winter, his second album is a good example IMO.

Originally known as Eight years a ramblin' circa 71, this reissue on Fat Possum is a classic from Fred Mcdowell again plus his local harp and singer friend Johnny Woods, who ended up playing with RL Burnside(himself a trainee of McDowells).
oh this is whats called Hill Country Blues, which is related to fife and drum blues... Had a heavy boogie to it that can cause a sort of hypnotic affect

More Son House; this time the Alan Lomax Library of Congress Recordings of 41/42. Quality is reasonable for the time and fact it was a field recording.
Accompanying Son were friends Willie Brown, Joe Martin and Leroy Williams. Due to the site's location, you do hear the odd steam train puffing by:lol: adds authenticity.
Only recommended for Lovers of the Delta.

Brian - a good find to discover Jamal. He's one of my favourites. Such a distinctive, light and quick touch on the keyboard. Amazing talent. And you are right -- always a positive cheerful mood to his tunes. Makes me smile every time I listen. If you haven't already got them, albums Ahmad's Blues and At the Pershing are excellent, among his many great albums.

it does a little, but playing it few times it gets less. not deep, just like a hairline. on 60s vinyl i doubt youd hear it. getting a bit dottery . got a huge boil on back and on big bomb antibiotics. make you a bit tired and slow at times. hoping thats all it is and im not heading for a"seat at the viewing window":D

really great. I tend to think of Bossa Nova as being quite laid back, but not this band. real drive to it. That real feel of pushing things but not actually getting faster. piano Bass and drums all really on it.
i thought i recognised the bass player, so had a look at comments. It’s Marc Johnson, who is her husband now.
Which made me look for an old clip i used to love and on which he played when he was much younger, With John Abercrombie and Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine.
Guess what... she used to be married to Randy Brecker.... brother of Michael.
Here is that live performance too, from Village vanguard. Love the energy in breckers sax solo.

Mr Ritenour is one of those guitarists that just make it sound easy, IMO he is one of the best, sometimes accused of being too laid back and MOR, but he is prolific and well worth a listen. This is one of his best, although 'RIT' is another favourite of mine.
