It was playing in the background for a while and I did not 'get' it but when I sat down and listened to a few tracks things made a lot of sense. Need to play a few more times to realise its full potential.
Also need to find a source for Black Jazz Records label as some of the line ups look very interesting.

So I was using the Roon discovery function for the lolz and happened on Steve Gadd a drummer that features on many of my albums (S Dan, Paul Simon, Eric C, Webb Sisters etc). Anyway not too long to discover he was on tour during 2016 with Michael Blicher (sax) and Dan Hemmer (Hammond organ) resulting in the following album.

I'm glad that Hugh was able to live a long life in which to demonstrate his music. His music is of my youth, we both come from South Africa.
Still was saddened when he passed earlier this year, end of several chapters - a full book really.

Just what SPUs are made for ... mesmerising.
Remember seeing Lee Konitz at the Third Eye Centre in Glasgow in the early 80s (regular jazz venue back then) and doing a review for the Glasgow Evening Times.
It's funny when I was in my early 20s I used to do all sorts of reviews ... more than 30 years on I have rather more self-awareness about how little I know about jazz and wouldn't remotely presume to think I had anything interesting or novel to say on the topic ... ahh, the arrogance of youth!
At the time I was more interested in the free tickets :)

Annoying when they cut the tracks from CD to vinyl. I know CDs capacity for material and all that but at £37 you'd have thought they would reward you for the vinyl investment not penalise !
good lp though i streamed it last night via Tidal. Sounded bloody great.

Really great track (as well as the title track). Speakers fully tested - handles it with aplomb.
By the way the MQA version sounds lovely. With the latest Roon version (1.5) MQA is now unfolded in the software (rather than the DAC) and output in high res to the dac. Give a few tracks a go. I know you had a poor experience with MQA previously.

If you dont know her, some of her stuff is challenging to say the least, but her Ptah the El Daoud set and Journey in to Satchadinanda are brilliant modal works. My favourite is probably A Monastic Trio. Later, I love the Translinear light album.

Hi Geoff, I'm not that familiar with Alice Coltrane's music...only in passing when I hear a track on radio or in a playlist. I will dig through her albums on Spotify soon. In the meantime I will explore more of Halsall's stuff -- I had never heard of him until your post yesterday. I really like it! As a side comment, he is one of a few contemporary jazz musicians that I have heard who play with real soul and heart. A lot of what I hear from the young players seems a bit sterile and constrained. Yes i have spent a couple of nights with it now. I feel I have only just scratched the surface!
I have to say firstly, IMHO some of Coltrane's music is not an easy listening by any stretch.
I personally love his ballad playing and when he slows down, I find his choice of phrasing and notes utterly compelling.
Both Directions at Once (I have the double Vinyl with untitled versions of takes) is not a ballad LP.
The 'tunes' here are generally material that is a vehicle for some serious blowing from JC., as of course is most in this genre.
Of great Interest here is the inclusion of the studio version of 'Impressions', previously only a live release.
The chemistry of 'the Greatest Quartet in Jazz History' is just breathtaking. The atmosphere Rudy Van Gelder captures
is typical of the great technicians mastery.
The speed of the playing on 'Impressions' is nothing short of amazing. And it goes into turbo overdrive on 'One up, One Down'.
But do not let that put you off, the interplay and artistry is off the scale.
Nature Boy is given the Trio treatment, minus piano, i can only imagine McCoy Tyner was caught short and headed for the bathroom for a number 2.
This trio cut gives the tune a different dimension. I love it. Jimmy Garrison on bass, keeps the whole thing bumping along with solidity and authority. Elvin Jones on drums, rides the Cymbal and underpins the whole proceedings with the delicate rumble of the kit.
The cut 'Slow Blues' is ...well a Slow Blues and as I said earlier feel more connection with this tempo of Coltrane's expression.
But even here, later in the cut, when he feels it, he wigs out and it takes on a different tempo.
The cut 'Villa' (Coltrane a well known fan of the Birmingham team :)) is a lovely happy bounce that has Coltrane in mid tempo
blowing and Elvin Jones is very busy filling in.
There are several 'untitled Original' cuts with numbers as names, for example 'untitled Orginal 11386' has Coltrane on soprano
saxophone, and is a real highlight of the session. McCoy piano solo is perfect. Then a brief Drum 'N Bass solo.
The double vinyl deluxe edition has duplicate cuts but different takes, each one different, so yes worth getting.
The sound quality of the session is great, sometimes a little bass heavy but that might be just me. The quality of the Vinyl, superb. The die Cut cover on the Deluxe version, a little underwhelming but it has some lovely metallic embossed type (gotta love a bit of embossing!) I actually prefer the packaging on the single LP edition. And Yes, I have purchased both!
Most 'Lost' or 'Shelved' records by iconic artists featuring multiple outages are generally just that, out takes and one can usually hear in the performances why they were shelved or at least try to work it out. Here it's simply impossible to understand how such stellar material by the greatest Saxophonist in history has remained unissued for so many decades.
A rare thing indeed, a 'Lost' lp that doesn't disappoint in the slightest.
Check it out on your streaming service, but be sure to give it the respect and time it deserves IMHO this is important as i feel it may take several listens to 'get it'. That's not me trying to patronise, it's just Coltrane's music grows and grows with the listener. Personally i'm still trying to get to grips with his Lp 'Giant steps' and well, A love supreme is a life times listening, I feel I may never get to the bottom of it!

Again, thanks for the insightful and thoughtful review of the new album. I've just found it on Spotify, and will play it tonight if I have some quiet time (unlikely, as there are a bunch of young folk descending on our house tonight...fun!). Quiet, undisturbed listening is clearly what this album wants, from your description. Looking forward to getting to know it. And I agree completely -- Coltrane's music is not always easy to plumb at first listen. It takes some contemplation and the ability to just let one's mind go with the music to grasp what he was trying to say. I'm not trying to get all philosophical and profound here, but some jazz is just like that...I have some Miles Davis albums that are "difficult" for many people, and I can't hear them on any old day either, but at the right time they are incredible.

Agreed -- we have his Ballads album on CD, and if it had been on vinyl we'd have worn out the grooves by now, that's how often we've played it. Outstanding! One of our top 5 jazz albums. Blue Train is also excellent. I'm not familiar with Giant Steps, but A Love Supreme yes -- we have it on vinyl...a classic.

Geoff -- good one. You're probably right, it doesn't seem to get much attention. I am not familiar with it at all. Not surprising, though, as Coltrane created a huge body of work. Incredible really. Wise One - my favourite in a seminal set! Giant Steps - it doesn't get much better in the history of jazz.
Just listening to Jade Visions, from Bill Evans Live at the Village Vanguard. The textures and subtle interplay are incredible. Musicianship of the very highest order.

2 of my favourites, for different reasons.
Both of them were kind of transitional, in their own way.
Giant Steps was a kind of culmination of his obsession with harmony, and making/being correct in weaving away through the underlying harmony.
Things got very complex harmonically leading up to this. He utilised a method of making fairly simple harmonic structures in to something much more complex.
It almost became purely a technical challenge in getting through this harmony.
This was particularly the case with the 2 tracks Countdown and Giant Steps. They are extremly repetitive and pre planned in their content. In fact in many ways they are not improvised. They are a series of pre practiced and thought out patterns which he applies throughout. I often feel that the only time he improvises is when he loses it a little and does something different until he gets back on track with the pre planned stuff!!!
Sounds great though, doesnt it.
After this kind of pinnacle of that kind of playing, I feel he is ready to move on. He hints at the vibe to follow in the track NAIMA , from the same LP.
Then crescent, a few years later. ( I think, just doing this from memory ). We have CRESCENT. Possibly my favourite.
I see this as the link between his older stuff and the more free stuff to come.
Much more emotion coming through than his harmony obsessed days.

Great thread this. Love itI think it's Bessie's Blues you're referring to Brian. I think of Crescent as a link between old and new too. The straddling of melodic to improvisational is met brilliantly on this album. It's also the reason I love Alice's Monastic Trio: she holds that bridge between melody and discord until the drop seems like the most joyous freedom possible.
Holy smokes! We've got some real Coltrane scholars here. I can't keep up either ;). But don't stop - I'm learning a lot. Love it! Fascinating stuff.

Alice Coltrane is my favourite jazz artist. She moves my mood like no artist in any genre.
The three most accessible of hers for me are Journey in to Satchadinanda, Ptah the El Daoud and A Monastic Trio. Lightweight they are not!

Evans style is a little different on this date from other Riverside releases, he really attacks the keys.
Recorded in 1959 but shelved till 1977 for the Japanese market.

Quite so...much more up-tempo than some of his other recordings. You can tell he had fun recording this one. Some of his lines are a bit similar to Ahmad Jamal's style in a way, then he reverts to his own unmistakeable sound. Wonderful stuff.

Recorded in 1974, this album almost never saw the light of day. Fortunately, the master tapes were found and the album was released posthumously. Professor Longhair was a giant in the New Orleans music community, but had not recorded in over ten years when he was convinced to start playing again. From the opening riffs, one can understand the stature of Professor Longhair as a great pianist -- he demonstrates that he is equally at home playing rhumba boogie, blues songs, and calypso. He plays New Orleans standards (many penned by himself), but what makes this recording a classic is the chance to hear him play with guitarist Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. The interplay of these music veterans is mesmerizing. The piano playing is breathtaking, and has a percussive quality unlike any other player before or since. It is hard to believe that Professor Longhair languished in obscurity for so many years after hearing the jubilance of "Mardi Gras in New Orleans," a song that will have you tapping your feet and hands as if you were in the parade. This album is essential for fans of New Orleans music and those aspiring to be rock & roll pianists.

He learned to play on a piano missing many of its notes so played some odd notes and keys. Although he is s very accomplished pianist he still liked to play in this style
He was also mentor to many including dr John and Allen toussaint.

Dr. John and his lower 9-11 band impart their own subtly sassy N’Awlins-style hoodoo to the work of Duke Ellington on this album of covers. Most of the songs here will be familiar even to jazz dabblers (“Satin Doll,” “Moon Indigo”), and at times John is a little too reverential, treading gingerly when a more consistently “fonkified” approach might have better filled the bill. But his take on “Caravan” is an out-there reinvention for Hammond B-3 organ and string-popping funk bass that briefly quotes Ramsey Lewis’ “Wade in the Water.”

Inspired by a general love of the tango, and more specifically the tango of Astor Piazzolla, on the part of Yo-Yo Ma, the Soul of the Tango album is a masterful work of the nuevo tango, played by Ma's cello and many of Piazzolla's former associates. Piazzolla's old guitarists Sergio and Odair Assad even showed up to work on a pair of tracks arranged by Sergio: the Tango Suite (consisting of Andante and Allegro). The sheer beauty of one of Piazzolla's tangos is generally enough to warrant the purchase of an album involving them. An album such as this one, where all of the songs (save one: Tango Remembrances, where Ma plays along with outtakes from Piazzolla's recording of The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night album) are compositions by Piazzolla is even better. Add to this the masterful playing of Ma, and the surprising facility in which the cello fits into the tango, and you've got what could become a classic album, but it was labelled as classical, thus is less likely to be seen and heard.

Just two ( very good at what they do) classical musicians looking to earn a few quid and jumping in to a genre that they think will bring in those quids.

it was more about Astor Piazzola than YoYo tbh, but showing how well the cello could adapt to Tango Nuevo, which has some of its origins in jazz fusion. His oeuvre revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music.

George Melly... George was a great singer, and well thought of across the world, tho mostly here in Britain. Dressed like a 30's gangster, he was larger than life. A great quote about him here....
He was a "personality" who actually had personality, a jazz singer who was also a cultural commentator, a devotee of the Surrealists who wrote the story-lines of a cartoon-strip. Presenter-performer, autobiographer, libertarian and in his own word "tart", he was "Good-Time George".
One more today, and its blues.... Blind Willie McTell's Last Session, which i think was about 1956. he died in 59 of a brain hemmorage after quitting music to become a pastor.
His Style was one one fingering and slide all at once giving the impression that there was 2 players.
Blind Willie McTell was one of the giants of the blues, as a guitarist and as a singer and recording artist. Hardly any of his work as passed down to us on record is less than first-rate, and this makes most any collection of his music worthwhile. A studious and highly skilled musician whose skills transcended the blues, he was equally adept at ragtime, spirituals, story-songs, hillbilly numbers, and popular tunes, excelling in all of these genres. He could read and write music in braille, which gave him an edge on many of his sighted contemporaries, and was also a brilliant improvisor on the guitar, as is evident from his records. McTell always gave an excellent account of himself, even in his final years of performing and recording.

Sam was a very popular bluesman in the 30's/40's, playing with bluesmen like Bukka White, Memphis Slim, Willie Lacey, and Jazz Gillum, although his main partner would be the man he used to say was his half brother, Big Bill Broonzy(he probably wasn't). Sam wrote hundreds of songs as well and was probably the best washboard player around (quite a skill at the top level)

When Rolling Stone reporter Jon Landau asked Albert King in 1968 who his guitar influences were, King replied, "Nobody. Everything I do is wrong." A pioneer of electric blues, King (who was left-handed) played a right-handed 1959 Gibson Flying V upside down, with the bass strings unconventionally facing the floor. He used an indecipherable secret tuning, hitting notes with his thumb. The six-foot-four, 300-pound King was able to bend notes farther and more powerfully than almost any other guitarist, and his records influenced a generation: Eric Clapton lifted the "Strange Brew" solo from King, and Duane Allman turned the melody of King's "As the Years Go Passing By" into the main riff of "Layla." Numerous artists have recorded or performed the song through the years, such as: Muddy Waters (1950) Paul Butterfield (1964), Rod Stewart (1964), Junior Wells (1965), Chuck Berry (1967), Grateful Dead (1967), Taj Mahal (1969), Ten Years After (1969), Johnny Winter (1969), Van Morrison (1993), Paul Rodgers with Jeff Beck (1993), Huey Lewis and the News (1994), Jonny Lang (1997), the Derek Trucks Band (1998), Devil In A Woodpile (1998), Gov't Mule (2012), and Widespread Panic (2012). Motörhead (live only). The Allman Brothers Band played it in the first set of their final concert at the Beacon Theater in New York on October 28, 2014.

Homesick James and Snooky Pryor with the Big Bear Sessions... this is a double cd and is pretty much 3 full albums plus a few extra cuts. Big Jim Simpson started Big Bear Records in 1968 but it never really got going til 72. This is from the next year.
Jim began to host blues nights in a pub in Birmingham. His clientile early on included Ozzy Osbourne and Toni Iommi, who used to play at intermission. Lol. That was pre sabbath of course.

Listened to this one last night, and it's a good one. I had his Live at Carnegie on a few days before, which is a bit more polished. Live Alive, OTOH, is wonderfully gritty and punchy. Still, the Carnegie recording is well worth a listen...some great stuff on there. Nice to see another SRV fan here :)

After reading Jeff Day's enormously long review of the Nelson Pass SIT3 amp (Positive Feedback) I dug out Egberto Gismondi CD. ECM recordings were often weird, musically-I had many on vinyl in 80s - but very well recorded.

Levon Helm...Dirt Farmer. Ex drummer from the band, this was his first solo album for 25 years when it came out in 2007. Recorded at his own woodstock studio.
