I seem to like gentler, slower music these days, so out goes Bitches Brew et la, and this one stays and gets played.

Spanish type guitar with some poppy overtones, very easy listening with just enough virtuosity to keep it interesting. Moving away from 50s/60s era Blue Note post bop to easier on the ear later jazz and its offshoots.

I stumbled across this record in a turntable review, and did a bit of an investigation, turns out it is quite a well known live recording, in 'Jazz' circles anyway. I hunted around and came across a re-release on Amazon, https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003CF0XBG?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details.

It was originally recorded in 1976, it is very well recorded and the performance is great with a feeling of being there with the band, and some great interpretations of some classic jazz numbers. it is well worth a punt if you love jazz.

Think I've got a copy on LP somewhere. Beautifully recorded, but "Jazz Swing" is not to my taste.

In the past I have been persuaded to buy recordings which were given rave reviews in the mags: Thelma Houston "I've got the music in me' on Sheffield Labs direct cut was one. Bought it, played it but didn't like it, so gave it a friend of mine who is a bit of an audio buff.

Shame really this is not available in any other format (that I am aware of). It's crackin'! The interplay is such that (even without the visual) you can tell they are having a blast. It is less sweet and more raw. Perhaps, it would seem, they wanted to direct her into more "chanteuse" territory, maybe she wanted to go that direction. But here, Diana, Anthony (Wilson, gtr), Robert (Hurst, bs) and Peter (Erskine, drms) just... ...play. Highly recommended (while also acknowledging "each to his own"). I would buy this on vinyl in a heartbeat.

I have Bop till you drop on vinyl and it is a terrible recording, thin flat and sounds very digital for all the wrong reasons. Paris Texas comes from another universe.

It's mind expanding man :lol:, there is some superb composition and musicianship, I believe it is considered a seminal album in its day.

I think I've got four or five copies, both original and reissued, and on LP and CD.
Whatever the version, it is a seminal album and an essential part of anyone's jazz collection.

That's not how Discogs classifies it, neither does Vollenweider.

Don't worry Barry, I know exactly what it is thanks. Just popped it into Jazz listening, as it is quite freeform musically, but I suppose it could be described as Psychedelic Music, a bit like PF - Echoes in some respects. I think Ambient for style is stretching that a bit.

What is the difference between 'ambient' and 'background' music?

I would describe much of The Orb's music as 'ambient' but if that was played in a lift, some folk would be loving it, while others would be frantically pushing the 'doors open' button :) To me 'ambient' describes anything not overly concerned with a beat or discernible structure.

Whereas 'background' to me is the stuff your parents might like, but played really quietly.

I first saw The Orb at Glastonbury in '93 - they really didn't sound like anything we'd heard before, that combined with trouser flapping bass from their huge sound system made quite an impression. I've seen them a few times since, some ok some disappointing. I suppose you have to be in the mood :)

Re. the supermarketmusic: I think we should remember we are not like the average joe when it comes to listening to music - the supermarket bosses will have had their people look into background music and shoppers, and what we hear is the result of that. Many times I've heard shoppers singing along to these tunes, often crap that back in the day I would have been embarrassed to ask for in a record shop.

I don't expect to hear 'Been Caught Stealing' by Jane's Addiction, and Napalm Death probably wouldn't make Asda's playlist either.
