I've finished 'Modern Man' and can say that I've thoroughly enjoyed it and would like to pick up a copy at some point; likely to go on my vinyl list for 'digging' sessions and yes I'm now making physical lists as I can't remember all these things to look out for anymore ;)

Not much variation so far today as I'm on my fourth spin of 'The Comet is Coming' - 'Trust in the Lifeforce...'on headphones.

The 'complete' version has 13 additional tracks of the live performance at the Royal Roost in 1948.

Both versions have 'Darn that Dream', being the only track I dislike as it is an example of 'vocalese' which I detest.

I have both versions and only recently acquired the 'complete' version in a charity shop, bought out of interest in hearing live recording of the Miles Davis nonet.

No, 'scat' is the singing of nonsense words (for example: "be bab a do wha") as lyrics. It was naturally invented by Ella Fitzgerald when she forgot the actual lyrics to a song she was singing and sustituted scat in their place.

'Vocalese' is different, it is a style or musical genre of jazz singing in which words are added to an instrumental soloist's improvisation. I find it mawkish and syrupy and dislike it enormously.

Are you alluding to the fact that I have stacked platters? If so then I did it many years ago.
I had to upgrade the bearing to a new one especially made for the job. And of course I had to add a longer spindle.
Both were aquired through 'Lenco Heaven'.

Well apart from the fact it looks damned cool.

It further detaches the motor from the stylus more giving a more inky blackness to the background.
The original Lenco platter was prone to ringing a bit. The weight of two platters with Garrard platter rings between them stops all that.
It's also supposed to give a bigger more precide soundstage.

As with all things though everything is subjective.

Some older friends gave me their small but pristine record collection today, as they not had a system to play them on for over 30 years. This boxed set is a mix of dance bands from the era and it has some rather good tracks and bands, Readers Digest did release some rather good compilations back in the day. Some tracks I recall hearing from my parent collection and from old movies we used to watch ion a Sunday in the 60's when I was a lad.

Mississippi John Hurt’s grand-daughter Mary Hurt recalls that “Daddy John”, as she called him, wrote home when he was going to appear on The Tonight Show in 1964. Unfortunately, the family had no TV set. A white neighbour, Miss Annie Cook, invited everyone to come over and watch on her TV. Johnny Carson invited Mississippi John to sing “You Are My Sunshine”. By the end of the song, the audience was in tears of joy, as was Johnny Carson. The audience gave him a standing ovation, unheard of for a TV studio audience.. When Mary’s father saw his own father on TV, he couldn’t believe it. It was a great moment for the whole community of Avalon.

Today, Mississippi John is buried next to his old cabin, which Mary Hurt maintains as a museum. She also runs a summer camp in Avalon where underprivileged urban kids can get out to the country and learn about music.
