It has taken several listens to get into this album fully and it is becoming a favourite, being 3 lp's it takes time, however I know realise that it is rather good with some beautiful playing and arrangements. On a casual listen it might feel as if it rambles but for me with time it does not. Well worth a listen!

This re-release is superb, musically it is right up my street, I am not familiar with Grant Green's output, but will be becoming so. This album is what I would call early smooth/laid back Jazz, so cool.

Picardie and Wade in their book Atlantic and the Godfathers of Rock and Roll explain how the Atlantic version came to be. Stick McGhee had earlier recorded the song in New Orleans for a label that no longer existed and a distributor from New Orleans called Ahmet Ertegun (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmet_Ertegun) at Atlantic Records (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Records) to find out if the firm could supply 5,000 copies of the song. Ertegun could not but offered to make an exact copy of the record. He first had to find someone to sing it and remembered Brownie McGhee (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownie_McGhee) whom Ertegun had met in his “endless trips to Harlem. I called him up, and he said he could do it, but as it happened, his brother Stick was staying with him, so he might as well remake his own record.” The song was recorded that same night and went on to sell 400,000 copies.

Grant, not sure you have this one but it is VVG IMHO, I picked up a new copy at a reasonable price after reading a review which said Diana Krall when making this album specifically paid attention to the mic'ing and mixing so that her voice was clear and that all its nuances were picked up in the recording of each song. Apart from her voice there is some beautiful musicianship on the album, and it is impeccably recorded.

No I haven't, would like to see it. My friend gave me the BBC Live for a Christmas present, I remember seeing her on Jools Holland at Christmas. It was is such a shame that she did not get to grips with her problems and she is not still here now, a huge talent lost, but then it seems that often bright stars burn out quickly, I think of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Ian Curtis to name a few.

Hedonistic makes it sound like it's all about having fun but it usually involves addiction and mental health issues too. To get to the point they were at is a long downward spiral.

So regularly, and only, eating food containing too much salt, or fat, can lead to heart attacks - hedonistic maybe, but I wouldn't call it an addiction.
Sandy Denny (of Fairport Convention) died from falling down the stairs; but she was kinown to have a drink problem, so might have been drunk at the time. It wasn't the drink that killed her, it was the fall.
