I think it's all of the above. I'd categorise it 'great performances from a very talented bassist and his fellow musicians' :) I have a few of his albums, all good, but I think 'School Days' is his best.

Mid nineties. Been several years since I played them, and now I see why. They're ok, but I reckon I could take the tracks I like from each and just about make up one CD. There's a lot of rapping, which while more palatable than the aggressive misogyny the genre is more normally associated with, I find to be a bit distracting.

The project drew plenty of positive reviews, but imo only worth a punt if the price is right.

I prefer this, which I'm putting on next. This can be had from Music Magpie via Ebay for about £2.50. Worth it too imo.

To me it reads like Jack White's covers of these songs. But I was pleased to find they are the original songs by the original artists. I'd guess they are a selection of Jack's favourite songs, no other reason for his fizzog to be on the cover. Quite a nice compilation, though not the kind of thing I'd normally play. If Grant was still about I'd probably be posting it to him.

I hear what you say, but if I'm not interested in a recording on first listen, then I'm unlikely to persevere with it. I listened to the first two discs of the Kamasi Washington recording, and it really did nothing for me, and I don't think it would on repeated attempts. Life is too short - I have a whole backlog of King Crimson to listen to.

However there has been the rare occasion when I have had a Damascene conversion: for years I couldn't stand Neil Young's thin, weak and whiney voice, then overnight for some reason I had a change of opinion and now have a copy of more or less his entire output.

Most of her output is pretty good, I have this one, which is quite aggressive, and 'Wild' is good. If you like electric Rock/Blues well played then you will enjoy her I think.

I should add that the record was well packed in a cardboard mailer, is completely flat and both sides have utterly silent run-in and run-out grooves!

It is a superb replacement for my 57 year old original copy, which unsurprisingly sounds a little worse for wear having been played on a variety of groove grinders.

A Sad Postscript.

After ordering the LP, I thought I would find out what John Mayall was doing these days. Was he still playing, was he still recording, or had he retired? as he must be in his early to mid 80s.

I was shocked to learn John Mayall died last month aged 90. He will be posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (that honour should have happened long ago IMO). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mayall https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c80ej3j9j72o

John Mayall was my introduction to the Blues, before I started to listen to the black American bluesmen who influenced him (and also the Rolling Stones). He may not have had a paricularly good voice with which to sing the blues, but he was a catalyst for some of the greatest British bluesmen who started their career with Mayall.

Blind Boys of Alabama, Spirit of the Century. Includes the track "Down in the Hole" which was the title song for the US TV series "The Wire", they also provided vocals for "Sky Blue" on the Peter Gabriel album "Up". Great album this, all the reviews on Amazon are spot on, and this can be had for less than 3 quid off Music Magpie, worth every penny.

It was Davis's change of direction musically, aiming for a new audience that would make him a lot more money. Out with the suit and tie for the jazz clubs and their middle-age audience and on with the denim for a much younger target audience.

Regarding 'Bitches Brew', I have similar feelings, and tend to only play one side: 'Miles runs the voodoo down'.
The sleeve notes don't help; to my mind they are just a rambling stream of consciousness.

With the later CD versions, the mastering engineers corrected the very slight slow running of the tape machine used to record the album. I don't think it affected all tracks, and I forget which track it was, but apart from those with perfect pitch, I doubt anyone would notice.

That sedond link I put in my last post covers thirty-odd versions (vinyl, CD, SACD) with measurements included. Might even include yours and Maccas ones.

The article did give information on this 'wrong speed' thing. One of the vinyl issues reviewed is a double album, with one disc wrong speed, and the other corrected speed. Some folk take all of this a bit too seriously!

Good morning Barry, yes my CD is also the Columbia/Legacy one. The notes on the back of the case make mention of an "all tube three track machine" (whatever that is), which makes the instruments sound more rich and full apparently, compared to the "thin and piping" sound of earlier digital remasterings. All I know is it sounds fine to me :)

Likewise Glass Bead Games I played yesterday is a 2025 Hi Res remaster, not the 1974 album. I would like to listen to the original, not the remaster.

I think I have said elsewhere that I don't really like what Miles did during his "denim period". Here I'm thinking of 'Live Evil' and 'On the Corner'.

However I did hear him play at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam in 1982, and the concert was excellent. :)

This is brilliant... Well worth your time if you haven't seen it, and actually, the music works, and is rather good, too!

Jazz Sabbath is an English jazz trio, with a fictional backstory that they are from the late sixties. The band was created by Adam Wakeman, touring keyboard and guitar player for Black Sabbath (2004–2017, 2025) and Ozzy Osbourne band member (2004–2025). (Yes, the son of Rick Wakeman.) Jazz Sabbath plays jazz renditions of Black Sabbath songs, claiming to be the original writers of those songs and accusing Black Sabbath of plagiarism.

The band first appeared in a mockumentary on YouTube in February 2020. In this short film band leader Milton Keanes (Adam Wakeman) was interviewed by actor Robert Powell about the early days of Jazz Sabbath, their cancelled debut album and the alleged theft of their songs by Black Sabbath. (It's very witty!)

Re-imagined jazz compositions of Sabbath songs Barry from what I'm hearing now. But you would struggle to recognise it as anything other than jazz and blind I doubt you would guess the source material inspiration, unless you knew it well.

Very interesting Alex - I'd say it fits in the smooth jazz, or lounge jazz genre.

Milton Keanes, pianist for the British trio Jazz Sabbath, first emerged in early 2020 claiming that his group's lost 1960s album had been plagiarized by heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath. In truth, Keanes is the alias of Adam Wakeman, longtime keyboardist for Ozzy Osbourne, and he came up with the idea for his fictional jazz combo while on a tour with Black Sabbath. The project's self-titled debut, a collection of Black Sabbath songs arranged for a jazz piano trio, appeared in 2020. Two more releases followed -- 2022's Jazz Sabbath, Vol. 2 and 2024's The 1968 Tapes -- which, like the band's debut, were presented as "lost albums."

In 2013, Adam Wakeman -- son of legendary Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman -- was on a European tour supplying the off-stage keyboard parts for metal icons Black Sabbath. During a night off in Berlin, he was challenged by another Sabbath staffer to try and play the band's set on a piano in the hotel bar. Wakeman's solo piano improvisations around classic tunes like "Fairies Wear Boots," "Changes," and "Iron Man" planted the seed of Jazz Sabbath, a band whose colorful -- and entirely fictional -- backstory he fleshed out over the next several years.

Along with similarly pseudonymous bassist Jacque T'fono (Jerry Meehan) and drummer Juan Také (Ash Soan), the newly christened Milton Keanes appeared in a 2020 mockumentary claiming to be the original authors of Black Sabbath's best-known songs, which had been cruelly plagiarized from their canceled late-'60s debut album. This provided the clever PR ruse for Jazz Sabbath's self-titled debut LP, which arrived on Blacklake Records in April of that year. The group's inventive jazz arrangements of Sabbath classics fared well on the jazz charts and were successful enough to warrant a second volume in 2022. In addition to their studio work, Jazz Sabbath also began touring as a live act, playing throughout the U.K. and Europe while arranging a third "lost album." Released in 2024, The 1968 Tapes continued to foster their self-mythology and featured piano trio arrangements of classics like "War Pigs," "The Wizard," and "Into the Void."

I saw them at The Roundhouse mid 70s, can't remember exactly when, must have been around 75 I think, as I left home in 76 and my concert days were over for quite a few years after that. Only saw them once and never saw Jo-Ann Kelly.
