By coincidence I have just received a mixed case which includes a couple of bottles of:
2004 Château Villars, Fronsac

Nice, but I bet you the one from Lidl is just as good, and less than half the price! ;)

I always prefer a wine that has had a glass out of it the next day.. Bourbon is similar. seems to react with the air well.. especially bourbon actually.

Well after much badgering by Marco, I picked up a couple of bottles of the Fronsac today (to go with the other 60 odd bottles I have in my ‘cellar’ :doh:).

Here’s some blurb:
The large, 65 hectare vineyard of Chateau de La Riviere is planted to
82% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% old vine Malbec,
in 53 separate parcels on clay, limestone and sandy soils.
This shows a marked increase in the plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards have old vines, some of which are up to 80 years old. Chateau la de Riviere takes a serious environmental approach to their vineyard management techniques. In 2012, they became one of the first Bordeaux chateaux to earn certification for high, environmental value. The red wine of Chateau de la Riviere is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel vats and aged in 30% new French oak for between 12 to 18 months, depending on the character and style of the vintage.

Nice one, on the purchase of the Fronsac, old boy. I'm trying to slowly wean you off of your love affair with Laithwaites, broaden your vino horizons, and teach you about the merits of Slurp-per-Pound value!! ;)

I'm putting my neck on the block, as a newby here, but Aldi Albarino, a white Spanish from Galicia is superb, and they do a great Amarone repasso valpolicella too.

Yup, that's also a goodie, if you're into Spanish wine [count me in], which tends to be a little different. My favs are the truly 'big' Rioja Gran Riservas, such as Marques de Riscal and Faustino (GR), to name but two - awesome! :)

Ok, Lussac is what's known as a 'poor man's' St Émilion (and certainly a world away from a Grand Cru Classé) but it'll still be a stonker, on similar lines to the Fronsac, which I recommended here recently (although I'd expect the latter to be marginally better).
Enjoy with a nice juicy (aged) rib-eye steak, griddled on the barbecue, served medium rare, with champignons farcis, pommes daupinoise, steamed (super-thin) french beans, and nice side salad of lollo bianco/rosso leaves, lightly drizzled with home-made French dressing, as I'll be having later!

Hmm , Spanish wine . After a neighbour of mine moved house he needed a sandstone trough (a big bugger - half a tonne at least) moving with the tractor and loader .
I took it off his garden and stored it at home here on the farm , until he had the space for it at his new abode!!
I leant him a flat trailer to go behind his car and loaded it this end .
In return he asked me what I wanted . Being an old softie I asked for a bottle .
When he was on his Spanish Sojourn , he returned with a dozen bottles of red wine (forgotten the name now) and plonked them in my sunroom.
Ever since then Spanish is king
Shame on me , but the Tesco Value Spanish red wine in waxed containers is my staple night tipple :cool:

Been having a glass of this over a few nights. Not sure about it initially but it is growing on me. deffo needs air but it is rather good now.
polished that bottle off and enjoyed it. Not really supposed to drink with am extraction but bollocks I need one nor two tonight. Think it would be good with a nice t-bone.
The Argentinians are producing some good wine these days and the Malbec is no exception. :)

Following Marco’s suggestion, I bought a couple of bottles of this Fronsac from Lidl. The first bottle I thoroughly enjoyed, but with the second the tannins were unsubtle rough and tart - curious that the two bottles should taste so different.

This is somewhat contradictory advice: lay the wine down or drink early? Perhaps I’ll buy a couple more to lay down for a couple of years.

Bought on the good advice of Grant, Saint-Chinian is an appellation new to me.

Saint-Chinian is an appellation of the southern France's Languedoc-Roussillon wine region. It is located between Minervois and Faugeres, which produce similar styles of robust red wine from similar grapes and in a similar landscape. It also borders the Muscat de Saint-Jean-de-Minervois appellation, which produces sweet white wines. As a result, the diversity of the Languedoc region is well demonstrated in this small area. The Saint-Chinian AOC title was created in 1982, uniquely for red and rose wines. In 2005, white wines were introduced to the appellation, made from Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne.
Carbonically macerated Carignan used to characterize Saint-Chinian's output but it is gradually being replaced by more-complex wines produced from Syrah, Grenache and Lladoner Pelut. As well, the quantity of white wine is increasing. The title also covers Saint-Chinian's fresh, dry rose wines, made from many combinations of the permitted red and white varieties.

Here’s the blurb:
There are many things to recommend this claret from the team at Le Chai au Quai, a cellar superbly situated on the banks of the Dordogne river in Castillon. In theory, the wine is standard Bordeaux, although in practice it's anything but, with the majority of the grapes hailing from premium Côtes de Bourg vineyards. 2010 was a good year for Bordeaux - as good as 2009! Can you tell us a little more about your bottle Grant? What's written on the label? Is there anything written on the back of the bottle?

13% ABV. I don’t remember what I paid for it but probably ~ £15 a bottle. An excellent example of a fine 2009 Bordeaux. I loved it.

Most enjoyable, this wine has with time come into its own. Flavoursome, medium to full bodied, with a reasonably long and satisfying finish.
Suspect this ‘window of opportunity’ will be short, so I’m going to look around for some more.

Had an old bourbon like that when I was richer lol. it just stuck to you when you drank it. It was about as old as you can keep it without it deteriorating. which is no where near whisky years. pappy van winkle it was... couldnt afford another bottle but boy, it was an experience:D

malt prefers a bit less water than grain i usually find. just enough to bring out its hidden flavours....if it has any;) not tried that one(least I dont think I have) from lidl.. i quite liked one that was either port or sherry casked, and came out a bit red... was a decent drop that, but I'm a sucker for those styles.:D

A couple of bottles of red recently consumed. Bought from Lidl at very attractive prices, but then we are in the best place for inexpensive wine.
If they tried to put the tax up on wine, or add a 'customs and excise' duty, I'm sure there would be the next French revolution.

A bit out of my normal price bracket but the first IPA reference I have seen on a French beer, so I had to try it.
There are some wonderful British IPAs, I have tried quite a few :D
Fleur De Houblon translates as 'hop flower'. Quite a floral taste to it, sweeter than most British IPAs.

Interesting, let me guess, the new Sailor Jerry's is a lot sweeter?
Old jerry was a fairly unique taste...lots of vanilla in it... New one just tastes like any other basic brand tbh.

Its a ltd ed whisky i think. Not tried or seen it yet but its not cheap. I am not a big lover of ardbeg anyways... Ive also heard it is not as dark as you might imagine. A good bourbon would be better at that price.:)

Caol ila is a super whisky... Never had a disappointing one. Laphroaig is probably my fav of the smokers and usually have a bottle lying .... Got a nice Cardhu gold reserve in stock too that i picked up for a song in tesco . a!d Marco the george dickel no12 is still unopened:D ....how ive resisted the temptation all these years is beyond me
Got a couple of Laphroaigs, but the '96 cask strength Caol Ila is sublime.
Currently drinking "Citra" from Oakham Ales. CAMRA gold champion for 2014. Stunning, hoppy golden ale with a "citrus" finish from the hops (geddit?).
This is one of those great tasting whiskies Been in my collection for some years but it's about to go like all the rest lol

Hi Grant, how are you , hope you keeping well? Just poured myself a glass of Jameson's for academic interest. Not been drinking much whisky recently but have a hankering for some knockando, nice light ethereal whisky. The opposite of laphroaig.
The basic is nice and the top ones very expensive. Not had one for years actuall... Glenlivet make it I think(knockandoo) ... A drop of Irish big J is always nice. Used to drink Jamesons when in Ireland working, along with a Guinness

Went to this brewery on a 10 day beer tour of Bruges and Brussels and surrounding bits. That was 25 years ago.
Of all the beers, this was for me the best by a margin. I've just ordered 20 bottles of it.
It has a problem, though. 330ml bottles and 9% but you cannot taste it is strong. I actually think it is stronger than 9% in practise. 3 bottles and you are pretty pissed but at the same time amazed at how good it tastes. If you do 4...:D
It is stunning at the right temperature.
Watch it f^&* this guy up... when you try it, by the end of the third bottle you will be staggered. He's just had a few sips, LOL.
He's overplaying the sourness aspect IMHO but it is there, no question, but then there's so much more:) Complex tasting in extremis. I have exhausted the Beers Of Europe stock pretty much with the single 20 bottle order. It is hard to get here. It is a small brewery, acres of copper everywhere. Amazing to see.

Anyway, having brought it nicely up to room temperature in front of the wood stove, Snapper and I are about to settle down to a few nips of this:

As an example, Iceland's "luxury" mince pies were apparently recently voted as being 'the best', in test against others from leading supermarkets. We bought some yesterday and tried them. They're ok, but to our tastes clearly inferior to Lidl's or Waitrose's finest ranges, which are both more deeply filled with fruit and richer/tastier.
So.... Fook yer ratings and trust your own taste buds! ;)

It's increasingly hard to find Beaujolais Nouveau here in the UK, as so few places stock it. I'm a big fan, as I love the fresh, fruity flavours... We get some from a local specialist wine merchants, called Tanners, but haven't been along yet to sample this year's crop :)

Aldi were doing nice big bags of coffee beans as a special which are very good... may have some left if your in to beans. £4 a bag too which is really cheap. Fresh too

I'm having an early tipple, listening to the Simple Mind's album "Acoustic", perhaps the answer to The Cure's Acoustic Hits, as they come from a similar era in time they must be very conscious of each other. Tis very good.
For me, the Penfold's depth, heaviness, and turn your teeth and lips deep purple with a few sips richness crucifies this wine. That said, this "lightish", cherry inspired, sweet for a red is quite pleasant. Indeed it wouldn't surprise me if they dumped a few cherries into the mash.
That said, it is a bit cold for an optimum taste experience, with spring and autumn being the best ambient temps to drink red in IMHO. So I have dumped the bottle on the radiator for a bit. Further impressions will be posted if warranted.
Just dropped the Apogees into a really high rake angle of about 10 degrees just for the sake of change. Loving it just because familiarity breeds contempt and this sounds different in a fuller, mellower way:)
I have almost finished my 1994. Erosion of this sublime dram - First fill and refill in sherry casks.
I have been on the look out for another bottle, but with no joy, so I am going to try this.

If my house was at 15/16oC i,d be in trouble. Its usually about 20/21 .. ive actually tried warm red. Not my cuppa tbh and cold from fridge, in which some wines are quite nice. A nice wine i agree is about 19C. Whisky and Bourbon should in fact be closer to body temp. About 25/28C is nice for sipping quality whisky.
Out of interest, what does a thin goblet look like? :scratch:
Ive got one of them.. very thin and big engraved glass. Usually have a bit of age with them. I agree most modern glasses are made too thick, probaby to avout breakage and coz they are often just pressed.

I dunno in some ways this thread is nuts.
This is the year 2016 and we are still consuming on a mass scale a ridiculously toxic substance that causes massive problems for individuals and society as a whole.
And what's more we don't have the sense to do anything about it.
We really should and could do better.
Not saying I don't like a drink but the penalty for doing so is not acceptable.
Humans should make it a priority to develop something drinkable that doesn't poison quite so intensely, but still has a pleasurable relaxing effect.
Alcohol is fine if you use some sense. alas the more you take the less common sense many have ;) I think losinng the rights to enjoy a quiet drink would destroy life as we know it and i would prefer nuclear destruction :eyebrows:
The point is Grant that having a drink with almost exactly the same characteristics but with less toxicity would be a much better option.
You'd drink it in preference if done well. Who is researching it?

cant be done. Folk tried with beer and it failed miserably. apart from laphroig, what would be an extremely peated recommendation? i need to change a bit. i tried recently a new, DTF only johnny walker line called "island green" and it was quite heavily peated but still elegant but i missed to buy it since i was in rush not to miss my flight. any recommendations?

Bowmore 17 or Ardbeg 15 have a nice peaty flavour without going over the top.
Caol Ila is nice but not typical of the other Islay whiskys.

If so, you may find that some of the red wine has perished... Also, check the dates. Most red wines sold in supermarkets are designed to be drunk young. They simply don't keep well for any more than 3 years. After that, it's quickly downhill all the way to becoming vinegar!
If you take a close-up picture of the wine bottles/labels, I can advise you of what needs drinking ASAP and if anything needs chucked :)

Most of those should be ok, but some need drinking now, to stay at (or near) their best, such as the Corbieres, Chianti Classico, Castillo San Lorenzo and Bordeaux Superieur, but defo drink the Corbieres sooner rather than later, and store all these wines in an environment less prone to dampness and/or significant fluctuations in temperature.
You should also drink the Chardonnay pretty soon too, and perhaps store it in the fridge until you do.
Now for the special ones!
The Fronsac and Graves, and in particular the Margaux Grand Cru Classe and St Emilion Grand Cru (x2) are good for quite a while yet, especially the latter two, which will actually benefit from some further ageing.
But you MUST get them out of the cupboard immediately, dry off any condensation on the surface of the bottles and store them in the same environment I described before.
The Margaux and St Emilion Grand Cru should be kept for special occasions, and when you do decide to open them, they should be decanted first, as there will likely be some sediment in the bottom of the bottle. The Margaux GCC is the star of the show though, and a real cracker!!
Both it and the St Emilion would be great with a nice piece of beef, some roast lamb or nice cheeses, say some mature cheddar or stilton.

Lol - whatever works, dude! You'll probably find the BS a bit sharper, but slightly richer, than the Corbieres. Different grape variety, too.

Here's a nice one, it's probably my favourite blended Scotch and not that common, i think some of the larger Asda stars stock it, that's where i get it from at least.

Used to be my favorite blend until a couple years ago when they changes the blend and the bottle shape. Was an Islay based blend but they have diluted the blend.

Yes i remember that, the bottle used to be green too, which made little sense, for me though a blend based on an Islay malt retains more of the character from the base malt which is why i like it.

Btw, Lidl have got some superb, fruity and refreshing whites in from the Veneto region of Northern Italy, which would make lovely spring/summer drinking.
I know you're partial to a cheeky wee Pinot Grigio, but these wines made from grapes indigenous to the Veneto area are in a similar style, and arguably better.

I'm hoping some rather interesting Japanese whisky is winging its way to me next week ...
I have all but given up drinking wine but was in M&S last week and just had the urge to try something.
I bought this very humble and unassuming looking DOC Valpolicella - but my god it is amazing!
I used to find red wine far too often disappointing and variable in quality but I cannot recommend this enough at around a tenner a bottle.
Very deep and slightly over-ripe sun drenched damsons and plums set against a background of fresh oak with hints of graphite on the finish.
Soft, dusky tannins.

I opened a bottle of Vieux Chateau Certan 1986 last night just because I felt like it - no occasion to celebrate!
Opening wasn't without incident though - the cork broke and I managed to drop the corkscrew onto my big toe. I was so angry that I ignored it.
Later on whilst I was happily sipping away I noticed that the toe was covered in blood ... :lol:
After decanting and leaving an hour or so I was fully expecting this Pomerol to be just a little bit over the hill but it has held up superbly.
I was amazed at the quality of the fruit - beautiful deep colour with just a slight orangey tinge to the rim, still looking very fresh.
Rich, delicate and slightly floral on the nose, tasting revealed a lovely velvety texture with the tannins nearly completely subsided;
strawberry jam with candied orange, quite racy with hints of graphite and parma violets and a touch of drying oak on the finish.

Anyway, more seriously lol, you mean you didn't decant the wine first, before serving it? Clarets of that vintage will almost certainly contain large degrees of sediment, so you'll have lost about 10% of the wine in sediment.
Did you eat anything nice with it? It deserves to be accompanied by a nice rib of beef/rack of lamb, some game, or at the very least some strong flavoured cheese. Also, how did you get the broken end of the cork out of the bottle, without subsequently depositing bits of it into the wine? ;)
Not surprised that what you did manage to sample tasted good though, as a good Pomerol is hard to beat! :cheers:

Yes the opening was a complete disaster. :champagne:
I always decant any decent claret on the rare occasion I drink it but yes, without going into further embarassing details there was a bit of a salvage job to do with a fine sieve before hand. :doh:
I've had the bottle for twenty years or so, stored at home, so to be honest I was amazed the wine was in the condition it was ...
Your food suggestions would be spot on but it was a complete spur of the moment decision so it was wine, and wine only. :D
Next from the 'cellar' will be a Lynch Bages 82 but am saving that for a special birthday which isn't so far away ...
I fully expect the cork to be trashed on that too ... :lol:
Maybe try a gas one. They are good on dodgy corks.

A question - Is atholl brose any good? I am tempted to try a Gordon and MacPhail version of it.
Whisky and honey normally. Some use cream as well. That one doesn't tho. Has herbs too. Not my cuppa tea
It seems to get good reviews, so I may try one. It's not expensive....
Tempted to get an Ardbeg Kelpie, Caol Ila 18YO, Port Askaig 100 proof and a Kilchoman Machir bay to replenish the stocks. :cool:
The Caol Ila is very difficult to find in France, and the Kelpie is selling out quickly over here.
