Well I would love to sample both the Glendronach and Glengoyne for sure but they will have to go into the notebook for now - there has been some indulgence on the hi-fi front and I don't want to take the proverbial too much ... :lol:

What could possibly justify this? If the quality had increased it would help, but the last batch I bought was very rough indeed, and not a patch on earlier releases. Shame.

yeah i saw tht.. it was originally overly cheap, so maybe they are consolidating the price now it has a following(it might backfire tho)
I've noticed prices creeping up over the last few years Jules, loads are collecting and flipping at auctions it seems. Was watching something recently where the commentator said during the 80's Scotland had a vast Loch of surplus whisky and many distilleries were either closing or being mothballed due to lack of demand.
Right now that surplus Loch is a puddle in comparison, distilleries are working at around 90% capacity, with new ones being opened and older sites being revived. There's a 3 year waiting list at Forsyths Ltd for new stills apparently. So I guess it's inevitable prices will rise.
Have you seen the new £140 million Macallan distillery, it's like something from a James Bond movie. The overall brand investment (https://www.scottishfield.co.uk/food-and-drink-2/whisky/new-140million-macallan-distillery-and-visitor-centre-open/) is £500 million!

I'm not a Macallan drinker myself, but the distillery is a thing a beauty - very tastefully designed and must be something to see up close. All those gleaming stills purring away, wonderful stuff.

I’m on the Primitivo from Majestic tonight and it’s delicious.
Zinfandel and Primitivo are virtually the same grape but you wouldn’t believe it from this offering - it’s much more subtle and three dimensional than the Zin I tried earlier.
A lot of Primitivos can be somewhat mediocre and rather ‘dark’ but this is far from that with its bright berry style; a very classy effort indeed. £8.99

This is the first duffer I have had from my recent Majestic haul - I'm not a big white drinker but I do like Viognier occasionally ...
I found this South African effort rather insipid, lacking those ripe peach and apricot flavours; tasted more like a cheap NZ Sauvignon than a pukka Viognier ...

Yeah, the Corry is almost done unfortunately... There was an Ugi before that, that was stunning too...
I do have a bottle of Kelpie on the way though, that’ll be an interesting bottle ;)
The Caol Ila is one I’ve not come across before, it’s the colour of water more or less, so it’ll be an interesting dram :)
The Octamore is amazing, but, it lingers a long time, hence why I’ve hardly touched it. It’s so oily, the taste sits with you for hours!
The SMWS bottles are great fun, the Tar Very Much is lovely, a smooth drinker, but quite hot. I have their Eviscerated Jelly Babies too, that’s a great dram

used to prefer Laphroaig myself, a bit like the duke of rothesay:D will be interesting tho...
Very nice, Timbo! Only thing for me is that I find the 'standard' Lag rather smoky - too much for my tastes... However, your palate may be different, and also the Distillers Edition' might have a different flavour. In any case, enjoy:)

I will, probably won't open if for a few days, but I often fail at that. I need to make a dent in the 28 bottles I already have open, before starting another!
I adore the 16 year old, so can't imagine I won't like this one. Used to just be a total Speyside fanboy for decades, but recently have pushed my palate and the flood gates have opened. Bloody expensive floodgates too!
Scored this the other day. Excellent.
Recommended for mother-in-laws that just won't stop nagging.

I haven't forgotten this Dave, just not opened it yet, but I'll fess up when I do. As Grant spotted it was on a limited deal at Amazon for £65.99, rather than the normal 85 ish. Lagavulin 16 is one of my go to whiskies as well, in fact I've just pored a wee dram :)

That is superb Wiessbier Marco. I used to drink a Wiessbier called Wiessbier Crystal when I worked in Germany and the one you mention is close.:cool:

Visited a pub in Keswick today for lunch, called The Dog & Gun. Tried an ale called Woof & Bang (created by the Keswick Brewing Co for this particular pub). Nice it was too imo, although I'm not much of a beer drinker so what do I know? May not appeal to you pissheads sorry I mean discerning types. Elsewhere in the country it's called Thirst Gold.

Had the above sherry today, served chilled with some canapés , and it was lovely. Typical quality dry Fino sherry, which one would expect from the likes of Tio Pepe, but IMO with more depth and flavour. It really is superb value for money. I'm off to buy another couple of bottles tomorrow for Xmas!:)

From Aldi, a fantastic, crisp, fresh and fruity white from the Languedoc-Roussillon area of France.
Ideal with all types of seafood, but it has enough body and structure to accompany more oily and robust white fish, such as salmon. And at £5.99, just stupidly cheap for the quality on offer, and thus highly recommended in that context!

It was certainly kinder to my constitution than the first time I visited Keswick parent-free (September 1978). When (I believe) a rogue pint of Jennings put paid to my first date with a lovely student nurse who lived in the town. I accidentally did a Cumberland sausage in my pants, and that was the end of that. But I saw her the next evening, where we ate at the aforementioned Dog & Gun, where I had, yes, Cumberland sausage!

I am drinking a sensational Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano that I bought from the Co-op for 12 quid I think, which for this wine is bargain-tastic. It's a DOCG 2015 Riserva.
It's pretty rare to find a VNDM outside of specialist wine stores, so to get a really good one from the Co-op is a real find. Always a favourite of mine on the rare occasions I drink it, I much prefer it to Chianti for example which uses a very similar Sangiovese blend but this is a little darker, with much more depth and texture. Really sumptuous!

Just took in a bit more of your post Marco, like the look of the Valpolicella & Cotes du Rhone as well.
Also like Montepulciano & Sangiovese.
Trust me, mate, they're all top-notch wines, at the very minimum £3-4 less than they'd be elsewhere, and in some cases up to £10 less. Don't know how they do it - most likely buying up large quantities of limited production wines from small producers, which they'll get a good deal on:)
If you like Rhône wines, then the Bouches du Rhône, in particular is just bonkers value at under a fiver, as it's an £8-9 wine anywhere else, for that quality. It'll be lovely and soft and fruity. The Côtes du Rhône Villages will be on similar lines, but have much more structure and finesse.
The Valpolicella will be very different from either of those, smoother and much more full-bodied. However, now I know you like Merlot and Sangiovese, I'll see what reccos I can come up with!:cool:

What are you having it with, and most importantly, I presume you'll be decanting it first? Musar pretty much always has some sediment at the bottom of the bottle. I always leave it standing upright for and hour or so before decanting, to allow the sediment to settle, which make it separate more and easier to extract:)

Just bought three bottles of Whisky to see me through winter.

Went to a Chateau Musar wine tasting earlier this year with a guy from the vineyard. At 10 quid a ticket I think I polished that value off in the first few minutes! We had some outstanding wine that night and rather a lot of it, more than worth the price of entry. His presentation was very informative too, had the entire family history of Chateau Musar and their ethos behind their wines and style of wine-making.
I'm a fan . . . it's not cheap, but is anything that's really good?

Yup; it was decanted a good few hours before we had it.
We had it with the brisket that I'd cooked. We were all out my folks for tea last night; so there was a roast fore rib and the brisket as well as the usual trimmings ;)
A few good reds went down, the Ravenswood didn't get opened, makes a change haha :)
Excellent - sounds great, but next time we want pics of the COOKED result!;)

Haven't had Beaujolais Nouveau in years - 20+ I reckon, never really liked lighter, fruity wines but should give it a go I reckon as my taste may have changed.
Yes unfortunately it's gone out of fashion lately, so difficult to source now, other than from specialist wine shops. And when it was 'fashionable', the quality was often rather variable, with some of it being quite poor.
The difference with the likes of Tanners though, is that they send their wine representatives over to selected vineyards in France (where they're built up a good rapport with the growers), and each year the wine (Beaujolais Nouveau) is assessed for quality. If it doesn't come up to scratch, then it's rejected and they don't import any.
Fortunately that hasn't happened since I've been a customer, as the suppliers they use have a great record for producing top-quality wines. It also means that, with being subject to such a stringent selection process, unlike before where BN was stocked by every 'Tom. Dick and Harry', simply because it was fashionable (think around the mid 80s), you *know* it's going to be good, or at least worth drinking!
Like you say though, BN is the POLAR OPPOSITE of the type of wine you normally drink, especially the likes of a Rioja Gran Reserva!:eek:
It's much lighter and fruitier, but good examples (such as Tanners sell) are jam-packed full of bright berry-fruits, so it's like having a glass of freshly-pressed alcoholic blackcurrants in your glass (and the perfumed aroma is just fantastic), as is the deep purple-red colour of the wine, and the flavour of the grapes just lingers in your mouth with every sip!
Done well, it's gorgeous stuff - *IF* you appreciate that style of wine, which MUST be accompanied with food (think all types of charcuterie, especially saucisson sec/salami, and Brie or Camembert cheese), in order to be fully appreciated (served at UK-winter room temperature or under), and not glugged on its own!!:nono:
As you're a cheese lover mate, you might just love it, if your palate has changed, so why not give it a go? You can order it directly from Tanners, via the link I posted above [a very classy and professional, old-school vintners, which I can't recommend highly enough]. You simply won't find a better example of the breed, trust me!:)

I will be I terested to know your thoughts on the 8 YO. I tend to find anything under 12 is a bit young, and has not matured enough, in my opinion. You still get that strong alcohol taste, which covers up the complex tastes behind it.

Very nice... The Campbeltown whiskies have really impressed me so far, it's an area that's easily forgotten when it comes to choosing a dram to sup.

Edradour is good, but "IMO they're losing their way currently. With their Bellechin range, they're going too peaty when really they need to stay on their Highland malt line and make their dark, tasty and complex whiskies without turning to the TCP dark side
If you want a similar/as good whisky, blended or single malt, look at Aberfeldy/House of Dewar ;)

I opened my bottle of Legacy last night. It's super. If you like a'Bunadh you will love this heavily sherried style but this is so much better with more depth of flavour and a really long finish.
a'Bunadh has gone down in quality and up in price whilst this has an amazing price on Amazon of 39 quid - what a steal!!

Knowing you lol, it'll be quality! Yeah, but like with malt whisky you tend to get what you pay for with port - and the good vintage stuff in that respect is in a different league:)

I’ve a few really nice fino sherries in the garage fridge, missus doesn’t like then, too dry/oaky etc... I think they’re lovely, but in small doses really.
I’ll,be shopping for port next. I’ve a voucher for D Byrne’s in Clitheroe (a very old wine shop FYI) so will be heading that way to spend a few £hundred on wine and port in the next few days, get my usual Christmas box of reds etc. Only a few whites though as we don’t drink a lot of the stuff.
Will be getting a few English sparklings though, much preferred to champers in all honesty

I completely agree, *unless* you're spending around £100 a bottle on the good vintage stuff. Perrier-Jouët La Belle Epoque, especially the pink version, is our favourite. Or for something a little more affordable, Pol Roger Reserve: https://www.waitrosecellar.com/fine-wine/pol-roger-brut-reserve-nv Both are great of examples of 'proper Champagne', worth the money.

Belle Epoque I'm a big fan of; breaks my heart to bin the bottles :lol: But I'd still rather go English. I prefer the dry, chalky greenness of them compared to the dry but floral notes of Champagne
Unfortunately I don't get on with Prosecco; for some reason it gives me terrible acid reflux, but Cava and English sparkling I've no issues with, at all
Big fan of Nyetimber & Ridgeview; Simpsons Beora is lovely, but not worth it's price-tag IMO, it's more of a £20 bottle to my taste
I think I'll also get some decent perries in; I love my cider, but again, some of the stuff kills my stomach, but zero issues with perry... I think my stomach has expensive tastes haha :D

Last time I was properly drunk was about 25 years ago. I just get more chilled and then usually fall asleep - alcohol has never made me get aggressive or (in my opinion!) become an asshole. I'd say I'm a friendly drunk!

I've not even been "comfortably numb", probably since I was a teenager. The absolute MOST alcohol I consume, in any given day, is if on a Sunday I have a couple of aperitifs before lunch, then share a bottle of red with Del. And you know how much food I normally have with Sunday lunches, to help mop up the booze!;)
But that's it, and often I don't have an aperitif and perhaps only a glass and a half of wine. The rest is either re-corked (air pumped out first) and enjoyed the next day, or Del, who's a bigger boozer than me lol, will finish it off herself. And I rarely have wine during the week (last night was an exception with the cheese and Beaujolais Nouveau), and no more than a couple of bottles of beer from Mon-Friday, sometimes none.
I just don't 'need' or crave alcohol [plus I lead a stress-free life, so unlike some don't need booze to 'calm down' or relax after work]. I have always respected alcohol, and so *I* control it, rather than it controlling *me*. Fortunately, I also don't have an addictive nature, so don't tend to crave things or develop bad habits. But quite simply, I value my good health too much to abuse alcohol.
Moderation, in anything, for me is always the key:)

TBH we drink bugger all at home, unless we're hosting.
I rarely drink anything during the week as it affects my training and that's a big no-no...
We'll buy wine in at this time of year, always like to get a few cases in for Christmas as we have a lot of various family gatherings, but we've still bottles in the rack from last Christmas!
I don't deny that we do drink and can drink a lot when we're together with family; but it's always around a meal etc. I can have a drink or 3 on a saturday and it can make mondays training session not good, so it's all in moderation. But there are times were that has lapsed, as we've all had :lol: ;)
However, I wind down this time of year; always have around 3 weeks off as it's the only real break I get the whole year; running your own business rarely lets you switch off, but as all my clients are winding down too, it works hand in hand. So, with that, I take 3 weeks off training too. My body is generally in pieces this time of year due to the silly weights and stones I lift, but also it's simply to have a rest from it all. So it's nice to enjoy a few whiskies in an evening whilst chilling out watching a good film or listening to music in my man-cave/office.
I don't get plastered; did enough of that in my 20s to realise that it's not for me. I'm a happy/giggly drunk; :D I don't get overly serious nor nasty :)

To Robert, who asked the question, do you know what sort of whisky your son likes? Also, do whiskies from Amazon travel well to Australia? Does Amazon whack a huge surcharge on, or are there import duties? Might need to check - but you may know already.
My guess is that out of ignorance the suggested Aberfeldy might do the trick, but its a Highland malt, so not necessarily with the strong peaty flavour one gets from Islay, nor the flavours of the Speyside malts. Quite by accident we recently discovered Glen Moray - Elgin malt - mainly because it was the only one we didn't know in an airport store, and we wanted to take it on the plane. See I used to like Glenfarclas but now they're over sweet to me. Not sure if it's a pallette change on my behalf or if they're using different sherry butts. My brother and I had the 15 year old earlier this year and it just seemed to be trying too hard, if this makes any sense?

Im expecting a bit different to the glengoyne usual with this. I tried most of theres as i was on a taste there on my birthday and they gave me a few extras including the really dear stuff(which was amazing by way). Well t is Oloroso casked so it will be a bit drier and on the sour side of sweet i expect, also as there will be some young stuff in there it might have a few jagged edges etc, but it will be nice. Was a good price so worth the buying.
I do have another coming sometime but I will keep that a secret for now:D

Yes it is a bit 'fiery' on the palate in a very similar vein to Aberlour a'Bunadh but not the same alcohol hit and it has extremely rich sherried flavours and an excellent finish.
If you want subtlety and complexity I would look elsewhere.

Always wanted to try the hibiki, but its not cheap, so not gone there yet.
Although malt was initially my love, i did aquire a taste for good bourbon and tennesse sippin' stuff.
My dad was licencee of a number of function suites many of whom were whisky orientated. Hence why i got into it, being often in charge, and able to sample to 100+ malts

It's a different drink and needs drunk differently imv. A bit warmer and take less at a time. Also give it air.
A nice pappy is heaven although pricy now. Weller wheated is nice and rich too

Just picked up a Dalmore King Alexander III as a little chrimbo present for myself.
Dalmore King Alexander III Bottling Note
A sextuple-wood bottling from Dalmore. This auspiciously-named dram was matured in wine, Madeira, Sherry, Marsala, Kentucky bourbon and Port casks. King Alexander III is a rich, fruity Highland single malt.
Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt
Nose:*Malty and utterly Dalmore. Seville orange zest, Parfait Amour, malty cereal, barley and chocolate. Creamy vanilla fudge, tropical fruit with a vaguely vinous quality.
Palate:*Medium, rounded. Winter berries, spice, zesty orange. Liqueurs emerge; Grand Marnier, kirsch and Frangelico.
Finish:*Peppery with well-integrated oak and the claret makes a last minute appearance.

I am travelling through an airport, and they had an offer on. So I bought the Mrs a bottle of perfume. This gave me 50% off a basket up to €300. So I took this and a bottle of Highland Park 16 Wings of an eagle travel edition or something.
The Mrs will be happy that I thought of her, but not as happy as I hope I will be with these purchases.
On the downside, the flight is delayed.
I would not buy it at full price.

The top japan whiskies are good. One I've got is similar style of jar.
It's blended malt and grain but nicely done. Better than the old trademark x from eadies

If that shares the same characteristics as the Hibiki 17 you are in for a treat. I was lucky enough to sample the 17 and it was very good. It made me more aware of Japanese whisky. The only problem.is that the 17 YO is prohibitively expensive, IMHO.
