Enjoying a few of these tonight, one of top 3 peat-smoke drams On the planet.
Making up this speaker cable is a total ballache, be worth it when done.
Few of these as a reward with some tunes tonight. :)
“Treacle, Bacon, Bonfires” Yeah, kinda sums it up.

not my style these days, but once upon a time i would have liked it... :)
Tidied up top shelf as I've taken a couple out to open over last few days.. One for tonight [emoji23].
Got to keep up appearances https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200813/63a0a502ada3a193b9ec7e5d16c48a9f.jpg
Glenfarclas 105. 60%abv and a Nas. Lots of fruits, bubblegum etc on nose with this. Strong dram but has sweet fruit, sherry and maybe some chocolate + pepper .
Finish is long and warming.. Water opens it up nicely without losing anything.
Fabulous.. A winner.
Also honey appearing strongly with the added water https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200813/d36684bcba1d09f7d2092c88cb0b34fb.jpg
quite nice... i'd recommend it.. quite similar to a'bunadh i think, and to test my theory im of course being forced to have an aberlour abunnah:doh:;)
Is there any idea how long it was aged Grant?
Is there any idea how long it was aged Grant? My info is it will be about 8 years as all their whisky gets a minimum of that apparently. Its blended from casks around 60abv at that age, hence it will always end up at 60 yet never be exactly the same for batches. This makes it older than the A'bunadh. At under £50 a bottle its a Billy bargain.

way too expensive i think unless its a litre bottle.
having some more edradour:) a powerfully flavoured whisky but very nice.

750ml. Sad face:
Anyone like a nice bloody Marry?
750ml. Sad face:Was the first barrel proof single malt, and goes back to 1968. The 105 relates to British proof.
Certainly one I will keep some of
Anyone like a nice bloody Marry?I do like tomato juice, and spicy but never tried it with vodka.
Inchmurrin madeira cask.. This from the Loch Lomond distillery.
Lots of various fruits on nose and mouth.. A whisp of smoke too.
Spicy meatball this on finish. A bit of water improves it.
Rather interesting
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200815/6b1939a2cdf688602c6039640e26d70d.jpg
quite impressed with that.. a spicy meatball indeed. quite complex too. a slow sipper with a little water.
now another fruity.. hellyers rd tasmanian pinot noir cask. much lighter and a bit fruitier.. another very nice dram

I don't think we can get Tasmanian whiskey here.
Nosheen asked me nicely to just take a break from from buying more.
I have filled the cabinet and I'm not welcome to keep bottles under the bed or in the pantry.
A great collection
I've no more room either until a few of the opened ones end up empty. Only one is very close at moment. A nice hobby as you get to both enjoy and replace the worn out records lol
Grant, Do you keep a couple good Rums, This is a nice Dominican 15 year.
I've a bottle of this in stock. Been there for a number of years
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200816/1913ac387eb73444a64078230380f4eb.jpg
No idea if it's any good. Got it years ago in Aldi.
Blended but not a bad drop
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200816/84bc88a40ce5d46a6a100f42fed59b81.jpg
Nothing wrong with a nice sipping rum, it's time Grant to find out if its good.
Damaged my back so in need of pain relief.
Opened this litre bottle of Glenfarclas 18.
Sherry, citrus and honey.. Peppered finish. Needs air I think.
Nice thohttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200816/f19627cfa581803e90e16b5252caa5c1.jpg
quite nce.. gave it 10 mins and then a half teaspoon of o2..
First time I have seen the 18. I have 2 bottles of the 21 because I like it so much .
Got the same lot. If I had the money I'd get a case of it,and stash it for Conner when he gets old enough to appreciate it.
How bad is your back, I have 3 bad disks in the lower so I know how it feels. Sucks.
It's been in spasym for a few days. Had to use it today so it's bad again.. But needed to move some things and had no help lol.
Anyway the boy now has a scooter to use as he was falling a lot.
So time for a drink.
Bunnah again.. (old pic)
Rather nice this, although I wasn't jeep first dram.. Air and time have aided it immensely.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200818/063b12ddf887f9e9adce584875375590.jpg
And an A'bunadh too.. This is the 63.. I've another on order which was on offer. Good dram this bun needs water due to strengthhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200818/eaf23417efd4d56588207e9b8996a8a9.jpg
On the Bunnahbain,
Funny how that can be, The naked Grouse is like that ,let a little air get into the bottle and it seems to get better.
Air and time can befriend a youthful spirit.
It is a very nice whiskey for the money.
Grant,
having a taste of the Classic Laddie ,I see why people like this bottle.
I can also understand why some don't.
It is very young, 50 ABV. so it seems very strong ,even after air has gotten to it . But add a couple drops of water from a pipet and suddenly you can smell the salt air of the sea, fruit, like green apple, grapes, lemon and wild flowers.
The taste is both sweet and bitter at the same time, hints of brine, tea and fruit.
This is that break out bottle, when you want something different.
BTW: Nosheen says it smells like nail polish remover, mustard and horseradish. That would be a tuff distillers note.

Yes younger spirit I think because it's not done all its reacting in wood and air in cask will react and open in air where older ones will do so less, in general. But even some old ones improve. Often by purging some of the alcohol on nose etc, a bit like water can
I picked up these to day.
A bottle of glen Grant 12 and a bottle made to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Morton's steak house a very expensive restaurant.
These bottles where sold for $100.00 at Morton's then Covid 19 happened and they did not accept shipment of the next lot.
They where bought out by a local liquor store and I got one.
It is an odd blend of different age whiskeys on the label.
It must be good or Morton's would never let their name be on the label.
Mortons sounds very interesting Jeff.
The Glen Grant is a nice drop.

I have just received my 1 litre bottle of the Bottyist Botanist.
Just need to finish my Bombay Sapphire off before I crack it open.
I would like to find myself a bottle of The 500 cuts by Brewdog next.
It is too hot for whisky at the moment....
Lol.. It's never too hot for whisky..

If it's hard to find in Scotland it probably will never make it to the U.S.Been sold out in many places. Should be a cracker. Lots of fruit I'm thinking.. Dark colour[emoji23]
Edit.. Only 338 bottles all told from the butt.
Darker than edradour. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200821/6d11e69b3d720668a63182e20f1ef787.jpg
Some Arran sherry cask
55.8% this nicknamed Bodega. Sherry obviously with chocolate orange etc.. Lovely drophttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200821/d2a1471d0a58bb24c58a16b235d6698e.jpg
followed it up with a glenfarclas 105 at 60% abv... an e ven bigger sherry bomb and slightly stronger.. cheaper too, although imo slightly rougher. still its very very nice:eyebrows:
Powers John's Lane release..
12 Yr old and a stunning Irish pot Still.
Smooth, and with a sherried influence.
Not sure I don't prefer it to redbreast.

a nice drop, no doubt.. slightly more potent to the redbreast...probably the 46%.. similar price.
never come across the 3 swallow release in uk...
https://www.powerswhiskey.com/en-US/whiskey/powers-three-swallow
Similar price point as Bushmills Blackbush
Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk
Not seen it for, sale in UK. Might be an Irish only.
John's Lane is about 47£ so similar to redbreast. Both are superb whiskies tho. Not scottish if course but nice. Edradour 10 is a bit cheaper but should be held in similar style for price from home waters.

And which reminds me... When you return to Lidl, Robin, be sure to scroll back first on this thread to where I highlighted what was worth getting, from the pics you took of the shelves, as there are some stonkers in there:)

 I love the short bread and the dark fruits and hint of chocolate, baking spices and finish of apricots and vanilla that lasts forever in Redbreast 15 it is in the top 3 whiskeys I ever had. My favorites are Glen Farclas 21,Redbreast 15 and Eagle Rare 10.
And followed by Red Breast 12CS. Please Grant ,Tell me more about the Powers 12. In detail ,what is better about it than the 15? For me the RB15 is near a perfect dram.I just wish it was over 60 ABV.
just doesnt put a foot out of place, with a splash of water..lots of fruit here along with vanilla and pepper. blackcurrents, sherry, peel, chocolate and the odd bit of copper. a half teaspoon tops of water opens and smooths this even further. its closer to the 15 than the 12 imo but for me better, and cheaper at about £46 here at moment.
maybe slightly dryer in profile.

Thank you Grant,
$65.99 a bottle here.
Is there any shortbread in there?
I heard from a good source the price of ER 10 year is expected to go up so I bought 4 bottles and gave one as a birthday gift .
Maybe Friday I will get a bottle of Powers JL. I don't know it will beat RB15 for me as the flavor profile is different but it sounds like a darn good bottle to have around as I don't just stay with one favorite bottle.I do something different all the time. I love the flavor profile of the RB15 so much ,I don't think another Irish Whisky can replace it in my cabinet, though it may have to share some space.

Grant, we have to be very careful here...
If we ever got Marco to convert from wine to whiskey ,he would have his own copper pot still and Rick house full of casks.
He would begin drinking away all his wine to fill the bottles with whiskey!
This just can't happen the wine industry needs him.
Yeah, keep him drinking wine. Don't want the price going up
A couple of Macallan pics tonight..
I hope you like them as much as i liked the whisky.

What kind of glass is that Grant ?
I like it, it's cool .
Burns Jacobite.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BFVXSSC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Yes it's a lovely glass.
Very expensive here a pair will be $80.00 but worth it.
After reading about the Jacobites it would be fitting to drink some Tryconnell in that glass. In honor of then Tryconnell Deputy Governor of Ireland who appointed Catholics to high level positions in both the Military and political positions.
He played a large roll in that political movement. It's also a good excuse to have a good Irish drop in a very nice looking glass.:eyebrows:
Probably slightly dearer than here but not a lot.
Got a fancy to open this tonight.

matured in Spanish oak Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks.. bottled at 61% abv . fairly young but should be nice
Lots and lots of fruit on nose and pepper on mouth.. Needs a bit of water to open uphttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200826/f0aad938a937c085e5f7d771e34c067c.jpg
edit.. yes a lot of water to tame this beast.. very sherried with lots of wood spice.. european oak if 1st fill can be very powerful.. still its a lovely drink when tamed a bit... but never domesticated:eyebrows:
That would have to be a spicy meatball, in the U.S. thats 122 proof and a young one at that!
Water... you need a whip and a chair!
I just ordered this little gem from ebay .
I use distilled water and a pipet , for cask strength, maybe a small pour.
Any way I like it ,not something you see much n the U.S.
Around 5 inch by 3 inches so its fairly small.
Nice little jug. That will be a useful addition

ha!, yes lion tamer time :D tis a beast. pity your several thousand miles away or you could come round for a sample.
edit.. i read that this was supposedly 10 yrs old.. i have my doubts at 61% its that age..
Another cask strength came today to replace the one I opened.
Tomatin this time at a lower 57.5% abv.
Bourbon and sherry casks. I like Tomatin.

Fettercairn Fasque.
Lovely drop, and I only have one occasionally.

hard to say Rob. Ive lots i guess, and this one would probably be up there if they made it. wasnt overly expensive either.
Lets see.. Edradour 10 would be pretty high up as its under £40(just). anything unpeated from wolfburn.. any older glenfarclas or glengoyne. maccallan 18 and 12 sherry cask.

Wow!Grant,
I have 48 both in and sitting on top of the cabinet and 2 in the pantry Nosheen is unhappy about.
I will quietly pick up a couple more bottles or Irish whiskey, even if I have to hide them under the bed.
I have my eye on a Tryconnell 16 and a Powers Johns Lane. I may be able to fit one in my tool box...:mental:

I was recently given a bottle of Glenmorangie, just tried to open it and the cork was very dry and the top almost crumbled, will it be 'off' if I manage to get the rest of the cork out? I suppose I'd have to decant through a fine sieve,ta James
Will be fine. I had that once with a bottle of pappy van winkle. I used a stopper off another bottle

Thanks all,, wouldv been a shame to chuck it
I have seen quite a few comments on the internet about current Glenmorangie not being as good as the old stuff - you could have a classic on your hands there :)
edit: by the way don't chuck it - used to be one of my favourites about 30 years ago (haven't been able to afford it in recent years, they have certainly upped their prices)
The Johns lane sold out in 48 hours, but this was going on the shelf while I was there and i'm ok with that for now.
Found a bottle of Powers JL at Bevmo and this is good, It is not my favorite but wow! a mouth coating of oranges ,short bread cookies, chocolate, pairs, apple,
Coats like an older whisky.
Starting to drink more Whiskey during lockdown (aren’t we all...) and have a hankering to try some Rye - any decent recommendations?
I like Bourbon so wanted to expand my horizons a little...
Pikesville, Redemption Rye, Whistle Pig 12, Foresters Rye is top shelf for not much money a real steal at $25.00 a liter. Cheaper but also good Rittenhouse BNB Rye.
I am a Rye drinker and Old Forester is the go too bottle.I will replace the next bottle of Rye I empty with Old Forester as my cabinet is just to full and I will never finish my other Rye bottles if OF is in the house.
Can't count out the Saz either.
I have to stop now, Nosheen says NO MORE PLEASE! she said please...
I gave one bottle as a Bday gift but still have 3 bottles of Eagle Rare 10 year.
My cabinet can not hold another bottle anyway. I am 3 and 4 bottles deep each shelf.
A great collection. Women just don't get it [emoji23]
Rare stuff this.. Was a special they don't make now. Still kicking myself I never bought more.
Fettercairn Fasque.
Lovely drop, and I only have one occasionally.

The closest to this would be the 12 year? Some how the color makes it look older 14 -16 year?
This truly is a unicorn bottle it even has one on the bottle !
i think it might be the 16 yr old as its sherried.

Looks right to me.
I don't like Carmel colored whiskey as it messes with the perception of real age. My one fault with Naked Grouse, but I still love it.
Just the sheer enjoyment of saying would you like to have a drink from my unicorn bottle would be worth the price.
Only bottle I have ever seen with an actual unicorn ! and here it would be anyway!
The arch and the unicorn are two symbols that are heavily associated with Fettercairn. The unicorn is said to stand for purity and strength and has been a symbol of Scotland since the reign of King Robert III. It is also used within the Ramsay clan crest, of which the founder Alexander Ramsay brought with him to the distillery. The Fettercairn arch dominates the entrance to the town and was built to commemorate a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1861. This symbol has also been used in the design and logo of Fettercairn malts.

Very cool history, but I will most likely never see a bottle here, 75 pounds to ship 1 bottle to the U.S. and there is also a massive Terriff on scotch. Easily $200.00 by the time it gets here.
Well, maybe still doable, it would be the only bottle in Roseville Ca. I could promise you that.
It would be fun to pull out, here we call anything hard to impossible to find a unicorn like Pappy van Winkle. You draw a lottery ticket and if you win it's $15,000 to 20,000!
Not my idea of fun.
if u ever visit these shores look me up if im still alive:D just make sure your not driving

I won't be doing any long trips till Conner is in Collage 8 to 9 years off.
I have been talking to a guy who is planing a trip to Scotland to tour distillerys in 2 years.
I asked him if he would take a couple bottles of Pikesville to you and he said,Yes,no problem.
He owns one of the shops I buy from,he just got back from Kentucky and bought a Store pick Cask of Eagle Rare 10 year.
He will bottle that in Dec. I would love to have a drink with you , I hope you live long . Same here if you come to Ca. you can stay with us, it's not a huge place but its free and Nosheen is a great cook.
OK. Cheers..
My sons dog just got put down.. Cancer

Sorry about the little doggie, no shame in that collection. You have great taste in booze.
Sorry about the little doggie, no shame in that collection. You have great taste in booze.Yeah she was his companion, so he is lost
I am also watching comments on the Tomataian CS.
I like there 12 year.
Just wanted to put this out for comments .
Bottles of young scotch ,I was told never leave them get air to them it oxidizes and ruins the taste.
So use up the bottle once you pass half full. With Naked Grouse , I find a little air has taken some of it's youthfulness and tamed it.
Not that it was bad,I think it got a little better, I know 10 to 15 min. in the glass sure helps. Makes a difference in the older Glenfarclas 21 too. (time in the glass)
What is the school of thought on letting a younger scotch be exposed to air in the bottle?
I have a can of wine preserve, you shoot some compressed nitrogen into the bottle and shove the cork in and it puts a layer between the whiskey and the air in the bottle so it wont oxidize.
I have been using this in all my bottles, but wonder if a little oxidization in some cases may be a good thing?
Thoughts please:
with another trial between redbreast 12 and johns lane, alas the powers has won again... so its the new pot still champ here:D

Teelings would be another new Irish distillery worth a try. I think most of the whiskey they're currently selling is coming from barrels distilled in cooley's.

Can you find 4 bottles of Pappy Van Winkle in picture 2.Yes, but not for a while. My memory is that it's pretty good considering it's price point.
Teeling are one of a number of new distilleries which have opened in Ireland in the last few years. Although pretty much most of their current whiskeys come from barrels distilled at coolies.
They must have a pretty interesting stock as they are releasing some interesting and age statement whiskeys.
I have a bottle of this

Weller's full proof will be rather nice.
I see 3 winkies standing next to each other.
The pot still may be willet.
All great stuff. Just as well I'm not there I'd be bankrupt
edit the red box/bag is a winkie too.:)

If you look closer there are 4 ,the red bag is a 20 year! Reserve edition All the way to the left.
The Tomintoul 25 seems to be very highly regarded. It seems a tad on the pricey side though.
pricy for what it is imo.. a glenfarclas 25 is 125 or less.. probably better too.. although i prefer the younger 18 personally. ive a few of theres.. 5 i think. a litre bottle of the 18 for under 70 notes
NAS issue from Glen Keith, who usually just sell to blenders.
Banana, apple and malteasers for me.. Honey and vanilla, sweet peach and yet a drying oak there too. A splash of water helps this along nicely. Not much tho as it's a 40%abv.
Nice tho for money.

But it is the first whiskey to be distilled in Dublin for something like 50 years.
I'd say there are a lot of the batch 1 bottles which haven't and won't be opened.

Will leave it to you guys to assess this one as I’m a newbie to this game and this is my first CS (as far as I can remember).
Definitely getting the Ginger Biscuit and Malt Loaf on the nose though.
I’m too chicken to try this without at least a teaspoon of water to tame the fire of youth and strength but it’s still surprisingly smooth and I suspect the water really opens things up.
A lovely, spicy alternative to the Irish I’ve been drinking lately.

my online review..
bourbon vanilla creamy mouthfeel leads to spices and a nice finish. plenty going on in this after a small amount of water to open it. smooth and yet rich too.. plenty sherry on the nose and its helping this along without overpowering it.
Im a big fan of Tomatin and this does not disappoint.. Fabulous dram!!!
not that young as wood presence is there.. maybe 7 yrs overall but there are older ones in there
worth investing in:eyebrows:

one thing about edradour.. Its like no other whisky. they have tiny stills so it produces a different style to the big boys..
ive got a few of their whiskies.. not the cheapest thats for sure.
Any one have experience of selling whisky? If so please let me know what you consider to be the best route.
I have three cases of Arran "founders reserve" (very nice whisky) which seems to command quite high prices from dealers - I have seen original case of 12 bottles being offered at £3000, individual bottles at about £100, so obviously there is a premium for "complete sets" for collectors.
My idea is to sell a case (perhaps two) and then invest in some of the whiskies discussed here - I like the look of the "Edradour" range highlighted here by Struth.
My problem is that as much as I like the Arran, some variety would be nice :)

A few if the selling companies buy stuff. Whisky world etc.
A case should fetch that kind of money or close.
If any companies are interested. I guess it'll depend on how well it sells. I saw an ad selling a case for 4k. Dunno if it will sell tho.
Cheers Grant - will contact a few (like you, I can't help but wonder whether it would actually sell for that amount).
there are auctioneers for whisky as well, although i dont know much about them tbh. i dont collect old whisky
Grant,
I see a lot of ceramic water pitchers with whiskey advertising on them, I got a small glass one with GlenLivet on it .
Some of them are pretty big for just adding a couple drops of water to your whiskey. What where they used for?

Now one of my friends likes it after having a pour of mine. It sells it's self if people here would try it.
I'm glad they don't though as I'm sure the price would go up if more people did.
It's a lot like Glenmorrangie 14 Quinta Ruban ,but a little younger.
I wish they offered a liter bottle as the 750ml. just goes to fast!

been looking into this a bit more.. the initial founders was i think about 6 yrs old when bottled, and all the founders were offered some depending on how much they put in etc in 2001. some folk didnt initially respond sso never got theirs, but a 14 yr old was then produced to give to them.. I believe an 18 was also bottled at bit later, probably for same reason.
Prices vary, but obviously cases will make a premium over singles.

Opened this Edradour 12 yr old "Caladonia"
Being a big fan of this distillery, i decided to try this Dougie McClean dram. Its a very rich whisky; a touch more so than the 10, the extra 2 years have produced more chocolate and a nice honey and more sherried whisky, and a great longish finish.
again it is improved by the slightest drop of water; opens up by a huge margin... quality stuff but imo needs that 1/4 teaspoon of water.
Quality Stuff.

Hi Grant,
I saw a newspaper advert asking for investors (back in the 1990's). When I told my father in law about it, he decided to invest.
A couple of years later he received 5 cases of "Lochranza" blended - followed by 5 cases of the "Founders reserve" a few years later (both "in bond"). You are right about the 6 year old bottling (that is this stuff) and it is amazing what was achieved in that amount of time.
I have heard of the 14 (although the 18 I wasn't aware of, that must command quite a premium).
He left them to me in his will, but when I went around to his house there was no Lochranza blend to be found (he wasn't a heavy Whisky drinker preferring gin and lime) and only three cases of the reserve hidden away (thank God). I have my suspicions about where the missing cases went - particularly as a step brother in law had commented, a couple of years earlier, about how valuable my father in laws whiskey was :steam:
Mind you, water under the bridge and I do think about my father in law when I raise a glass to him - lovely bloke:)

GOOD STUFF... THEY MAY WELL HAVE USED SMALLER CASKS. IT MATURES QUICKER. THIS IS WHAT WOLFBURN ARE DOING FOR INSTANCE AS THEY ARE A FAIRLY NEW BUILD, ALTHOUGH IT WAS A VERY OLD DISTILLERY ORIGINALLY BUT FELL INTO DISREPAIR. WOLFBURN STUFF IS FABULOUS... I LOVE IT:lol: excuse caps.. im finishing my day with a wolfburn langskip.. heaven
Deanston 12. Another great whisky this. All bourbon based wood used. Gives marmalade on nose, caramel and vanilla. Some oak, but not too spicy. Again benefits from 1/4 teaspoon of water.
This is just over 46% and unchillfilreted.
I love most of there age statement whiskies esp this for value and the 18 as its heavenlyhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200903/560b153755e1e307960e5bb2f8ac1d6d.jpg

Cool... When you say "needs air", do you mean it needs to breathe in the glass for a while before drinking?:)

Marco.I found on first drink I wasn't Overy impressed. I left bottle with the air in from a drink missing and when I went back next time it was improved.
It's not overly unusual with young whisky. I'd estimate it to be 5 or 6. A bit of air, a splash of O2 and its rather good.

It's not overly unusual with young whisky. I'd estimate it to be 5 or 6. A bit of air, a splash of O2 and its rather good.
A 5 or 6 is maybe a bit harsh, decent whisky for the price, needs a splash of water and of course not like most of the peaty malts from Islay. A good bargain buy just now is Auchendoshan at £20 in Tesco, a decent everyday malt.

Ah I see... No worries, and yes I agree about a splash of water, as I've just tried it that way and it was rather nice! I usually put a 'teardrop' of water in all whisky, as I find it opens up and smooths out the flavours, but with the Bunnahabhain a touch more than that is better!:)
Marco.

Yes I like that one too, but around that level (or just a tad more expensive) I prefer the Aberlour 12.
Marco.

When you say best whiskey in the world, I guess you mean world as in World Series?

It came in at 126.5 when they opened a bottle from the same lot so it's around 63 ABV. So yah, a little water can't hurt it Grant. It is slightly higher than the bottle states.
I way over paid for these, $80.00 each $41,00 retail each so pretty much twice what they should sell for but they are Unicorn rare now.
No one has them any where since it got best whiskey in the world 2020. I bought one to give away as a wedding gift.
I was told I still got a deal as they are going for $200.00 now on the secondary market. What ever?
When ever I think of Bourbon,I visualize an old southern man in a cheesy leisure suit and a bolo tie drinking it from a heavy tumbler with a big chunk of ice on an old porch.
Oh, did I forget a banjo playing in the distance.

I think you nailed it!
I was trying to find the Tomatain CS, whiskey can be so regional here, it is not in California but it is in other parts of the U.S.
In time a bottle will come my way.
BTW I called the owner where I get my bottles, I bought 10 pricey bottles in 4 weeks from him and he charged me 100% over full retail on the last 2 bottles.
I get that they are on demand, but when you do that to a guy who supports you by paying a little more to go with the small local guy in my neighborhood and buys at least 2 bottles a week from you.
Don't gouge me. I won't come back again. So he gave me a bottle of Eagle Rare to make it right.

The price on Eagle Rare 10 year is expected to go up , here I'm told.
Due to the high demand and shortage of older whiskey.
Funny the 1792 is only a 8 1/2 year aged in wood, but the barrels chard differently and are aged on a different floor of the Rickhouse for a different flavor profile .
Distillers really are talented individuals.

We are ok Grant but the whole state is on fire or has been ,it's spooky the sky is gray ash is falling and the sun is just a red ball.
If Dry creek catches fire we are the first ones gone. it will be 110F or 43C today in Roseville and it is raining gray ash.
There has been weeks that look like the end of the world, not kidding.
I was trying to get a bottle of Langskip but it isn't here yet. The Arora and the standard Wolfburn is though.
I can't really keep getting more till I've made room in the cabinet,I've rearranged the bottles every which way and It still leaves 7 out and the Pantry is off limits .
Now I am making decisions , I like Monkey Shoulder and Naked Grouse but to get something different, I will get another bottle of Naked Grouse and replace the MS with maybe Tomatain CS, or WB Langskip.
Or if I ever find Glenfarclas CS 105 under $100.00, I did notice a lot of bottles you guys get in 1 liter we get at 750ml. for near the same price as you pay.
Even Bourbon is a problem here so many options are not shipped to the west coast that are available every where else. Just like there are Napa and Sonoma wines that are only local to California.
Sad I am not a wine guy.

I agree Grant very nice birthday present, the 18 year old is lovely but an expensive buy these days. THe dad is in industry so is probably receiving a discount on his purchases.
What was his Dad thinking ?
I'll make my son an alcoholic before age 9? God for him to resist ,but what kid follows instructions from there parents anyway.
Glad the young man is buying a house with them.
The fires are so bad here we have been breathing smoke and ash into 4 weeks now and we are the lucky ones.
Yes its a bit spooky.. Hopefully it doesn't get much closer.
Latest wolfburn, the Aurora.. This is very young at I think about 3yrs and a day.. [emoji23] But one of nicest whiskies I've ever tried. Half teaspoon of water and its at its best.
Another bottle has been ordered.

Is the Wolfburn or Fettercairn sherried, Granty? Need to add another quality malt to my small stock of whisky:)
Marco.
The young wolf is if memory serves 40% quarter casks. Ie 50 litre bourbon. 40% normal borbon casks and 20% sherried. Young but lots of exciting fruity flavours/
fettercairn, ive not tried yet but i like their profile. This has been sherried and port pipes after bourbon casks.. I expect it to be fabulous although not cheap..
Neither are although you might get a deal somewhere.
Whisky world have glenfarclas 18 bin a litre bottle.. This is sherried and very good.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-54071451
Marco,
Glenfarclas is amazing the 21 year is Christmas fruit, an amazing dram.
You can't get the 18 here.
Nice one, dude. I can imagine the 21 is like that, perhaps somewhat reminiscent of my Glengoyne 21, which is only ever opened on special occasions:
https://www.glengoyne.com/our-whisky/our-collection/21-year-old
For me, one of the finest malts you'll ever wrap your lips around!:)
Marco.
What is the story behind Pappy van Winkle reserve, and the extraordinary prices people pay for it?
Is it good enough to justify the price?

It's a wheted Bourbon made with red wheat in the mash bill , I can't say how good it is ,but Grant can . He has had an older bottle .
Wheated Bourbons are sweet ,if you want an inexpensive but good taste of that profile try Larceny by Heaven Hill or Makers Mark 46 both will give you the wheated Bourbon experience.

You will be happy to hear Marco the Winerys in Sonoma and Napa have been spared for the most part from the fires here.
Just a short drive away from me, if you come to Ca. some day you can take 400 pounds with you and Del on the return flight .
Lots of people have wine sent home directly from the winery, they can ship internationally in most cases.
I don't know much about wine but living in the UK you have access to some amazing Scotches like the Fettercarin, I can only live those through Grant, You should have at least a couple of these gems in your cabinet for a dram in winter. Nice to enjoy on a cold evening by the fire or in my case near the furnace with some Diana Krall running through the tubes.
Yesterday, I had a glass of red table wine ,nothing fancy but I am trying to develop a taste for it.
As for Fettercairn, I found the 12 YO to be lacking in complexity. It was ok, but did not do anything special for me.
The 16 may be very different.

I paid $20.00 for 1.75 liters of NAS Carlye scotch.
I read most of the Bourbon cask scotches that went into this blend are 8 years old.
I used a char 3 barrel for Rum then Bourbon, then added the Carlyle and left it finish,I put the Carlyle back in it's bottle and filled it with a red Chianti table wine for a couple weeks then drained it out, let it dry out some and put the Carlyle back in to sit for a few days and the results are very pleasing. It is still young but it's enjoyable to sip.The color is redish brown.
Dose anyone know anything about Carlyle Scotch ? Grant's clearly the forum expert in this area, with out question.
This little 2 liter barrel has been fun. I just poured some J&B rare in the barrel to see what comes, I'll look at it in a week.
It tastes like a peated Irish Whiskey, I'm guessing it's mostly Grain, some malt but not a lot.

Carlyle is blended in glasgow... 20 different whiskies apparently.. the company is Thomas Carlyle & Co. Glasgow. SO a guy with a big vat mixing and bottling I guess.. It got decent reviews for a blended ? and they dont give much hints.but at that price, if it tastes good you cant really complain.

I'm shocked how good it actually started out,and even more shocked how good it got with a little time in the barrel with extra finish .
No complaints, people where buying 4 at a time. It is really pretty good.

In contrast, we enjoyed a nice bottle of red, al fresco, at the end of a lovely sunny day, and lit some candles just as the light was starting to fade, and day moved into night...

Its cool how when I think you have shown all the impossible to find whiskeys of the world. You always manage to pull another odd unicorn out of your hat. These odd bottles will most likely never see U.S. shores but it is nice to know they exist in a land far far away.Never stop Grant . You are alot of fun and your posts make this my favorite thread.
Cheers. Won't go on for ever I guess. I'm enjoying my stock and it's more palatable than eating vinyl [emoji23].
Anyway it's a Burgandy cask tonight.
Tullibardine 228.

Follow up is the Aurora Sherry Cask from The Wolf.
Originally founded in 1821 up in Thurso, and rapidly became a very big producer, within 5 years was making 125,000 litres of the stuff. A lot for any distillery far less one so far afield as Thurso.
The new distillery is only a few hundred yard from where the old one was.. Some Caithness flagstones still show its position.
This to me is the future of Scotch Malt. Both distillers here are young and full of ideas. Innes Macintosh and Charlie Fraser are the 'next generation' https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200914/2212af729b73c47d161ff7b8d1ec8ed4.jpg

I will bow to your superior vampire knowledge Grant.
Scotland's Jack Daniels is Famous Grouse.
I say that because JD is the most consumed whiskey by far in the U.S.
And if what I read is true FG is the most consumed in Scotland.
Dose Scotland have Rednecks?
So tonight I am paying homage to Scotland's Famous Grouse. And I get to use my Famous Grouse cork stopper!
Peat forward, fast moving legs but sweet cookie ,like animal crackers, mint orange zest . Not bad a little vanilla and lemon furniture polish at the finish. I wish it was at least 43%.
Seriously pretty good stuff but not as good as Naked Grouse by a long shot.
I would never say no if offered a glass. It's like a peated Irish Whiskey ,has short bread through out the whole sip.The peat is really only in the arrival ,maybe into the middle.
Naked Grouse is far less pleated with a very well balanced sherry influence.
Of the two I would ask for Naked Grouse every time.

Of the two I would ask for Naked Grouse every time.
ha, well not in the ways of america i guess,(although we probably have the equivolent):D but historically we did have the Covenanters in 17th c..they were often called red necks as the often wore a band or red cloth round their necks and signed stuff in blood etc. religion and all that eh.
as for the famous grouse, its a very popular whisky in pubs etc

I can see why FG is popular ,it really is very good and at $20.00 a bottle!
Your bottles are even better being sold in Liters, It's a staple in any home.
Someone said the GlenMorangie 10 is at every Scottish wedding , another on my short list to try.
It's easy to find here too.

base morangie; the 10 is a lovely dram for its price. usually 35/40£(currently £33) here but sometimes cheaper. light floral fruity taste. smooth, creamy drink
Langskip again from Wolfburn distillery. Cask strength this too although so smooth you'd not think it.
Everything about this craft distillery is quality. Corks to labels, all the best. Needless to say the spirit is as great.
Think they are about 8 yrs old now, so gives an idea of whisky timescales there.

Wolfburn stills. Made by Forsyth who have made many of the stills around world including many in USA. I think Woodford for onehttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200916/c8ee2442a4930c2cb8cda4deb608c803.jpg

One of my favourites - currently £26 for 70cl in Sainsburys (I think that I will treat myself to a couple of bottles)

I had a little Jagger, it tastes a lot better when it 2 degrees F and your out hunting.
It's been years since I've had some and it will be years before I have any more.
The high point tonight was the Carlyle I re casked 2 times. It is actually pretty good and I don't feel bad about adding a big chunk of ice to it.
It's got a Highlands like peat thing going on, I like it better than JW Black Label .
Carlyle looks a nice colour.
This arrived. Got from House of malt. . I also got a gift of a miniature of same 155,and a couple of badges from Wolfburn distillery after I spoke with them earlier in week. The bottle is Ltd Ed so for now will keep it in collection. Nice to have the miniature. Its a port finish. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200919/7c6e4cf2a007ff6bccbff78a6c7dc20a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200919/e69ab834311eb7efc6d664d1e90163a7.jpg

Grant, you are getting on pretty well with the Wolf Burn, seems a good match to your flavor profile.
Can you give use some tasting notes?
The Carlyle has a good amount of caramel color added for sure. It was not this dark before putting it in the Rum then Bourbon then Red wine cask !
It was already as dark as a 6 year old Bourbon when bottled.
It is peat forward to the finish, but there is a lot of other flavors going on now Carmel, Dark bitter sweet Chocolate, cherry, orange, green apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla.
I was told it is a popular seller because it tastes like a 10 year old scotch at $19.99 for 1.75 liters. So people buy a lot of it for mixing.
I gave it 4 more months with our thermostat set at 76f ,so it has taken on a lot more depth of flavor and the legs run much slower.
It is better in my opinion then black Label ,having about the same amount of peat but not the body of flavor, the Carlyle is far more viscus in the mouth.
I think a Red wine cask adds a nice fruity note to scotch and because this is not an expensive single malt , after a hot day at work if I want to put in a giant cube of ice, there is no shame or guilt.
Rebreast 15 and Glenfarclas 21 are my top favorite whiskeys. I like the dark fruits and shortbread in my dram. Doesn't mean I can't enjoy something different , I do like Famous Grouse for there short bread and fruit flavors.
Glad at least one bottle I like is reasonably priced.
I would like to hear what your all time favorites have been, those memorable drams?
My cabinet is packed from top to bottom. I can't pass by a liquor store with out stopping in now!
We took a trip to Waitrose earlier, to top up on some stuff we like there you can't get elsewhere, and I snapped up a bottle of this, as an alternative to the rich, sherry-forward malts I normally like:

Not had it yet, but look forward to sampling it later!:)
Do you know of it Grant, and have you tried it?
Marco.

Marco.Yeah, it's dewars base whisky. Has a little smoke in it, but it's quite good. Fruity, etc. Not a distillery I'm into tho. It's next to macallans tho [emoji106]

Tried the port one tonight. It's quite a nice drop but it for me needs that drop of water

Ok, that's interesting... Just tried a wee nip in my Glencairn tasting glass, with the usual 'teardrop' of water, and to my palate it's very nice indeed! The smoke is only very slight, unlike that of the Lagavulin 16 I had to give away, as for me it was like sucking the dross from my wood burner!:spew: and it's pretty smooth without too much 'burn', with a pleasant fruitiness on the back of the palate.
I'm very happy with it. As an aside, what's your view of the Glenlivet 18? I was eyeing that up, too!
Marco.
Your moving up into sherry country and doubling price. Its very good stuff. Again a little smoke in there but mostly sherry and other fruits, honey etc. A bit dry for my palate but I wouldn't say no

Marco you let go of a bottle of Lagavulin 16!
The Islay scotches are an important learning experience, After drinking a few Islay's ,you learn to taste past or through the peat . There are other great floral and fruit flavors under the smoke fest.
It makes for a more sensitive and discerning pallet.
Try the Bruichladdich Octomore. Just buy a shot in a bar,not the bottle ,if you live through it you'll be affected for the rest of your life.
Gives you super powers or permanent retardation.
Tonights dram is Glen Morangie 10.
I was told it is unpeated but there is a steady note of peat in the front that fades as it gets to the finish ( very fruity and at $27.99 nothing beats it.
I am told it is the most popular scotch at weddings, a Scottsman's party pour.
Here it is JW Black Label ,Crown Royal and Jack Danial's in no particular order. Americans seem to do more blended scotches.
Tomatin Cask Strength.
Marvellous stuff. Needs water as said before, and will cloud if enough is added oddly, as I guess its still over 46. Most won't.
Fast becoming a fav here at struth towers. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/f00fd169f0cf210160187332250d8a25.jpg

I promise you my bottle has some peat. It is very noticeable but not bad.
I may email them and ask if the 10 for export is being peated now.
I sent an email with these numbers on the bottle and the place of purchase.
Oddly it really is noticeably peated.
Lets see what they find.

I found distillers notes that states no more than 2 ppm peat,I promise you , my bottle is far more generous than 2 ppm, still a great tasting 10 year old.
Could I be misidentifying the Smokiness for peat? There is smoke in this malt but not an iodine like smoke.
I took the GM10 to my freinds house and he has had this bottle before many times as it is one of his favorites to order in a bar.
I asked him to tell me what he is tasting and the first thing he said was " I don't remember this being peated".
I feel a little vindicated in my own mind. This is the first time I've tried it and everyone says it has no noticeable peat.
Well my bottle dose . Go figure?

tis an odd one. as morangie dont really peat any of their barley, im not sure how it got there. tampered with maybe? but unlikely... a barrel with excess char? maybe
or their profile got screwed up.. i think its supposed to be 2ppm peat with is almost nothing really.. maybe some got extra.. should send morangie a text asking them jeff
I sent them an e mail. It's not a peat bomb but it is from start to finish.
It was completely sealed in it's box , the foil seal was all intact so it came from the distillery that way.
I really don't think it is from to much char ,it's peat smoke ,Brad confirmed it right away.
I have been told over and over this bottle is unpeated so no one was more surprised than me,I kept tasting it then drinking a sip of water and re tasting, thinking it was just me.
must have been a batch of barley that picked up more than normal background phenol from the sprouter company. that is why they say 2ppm, as a max, but it really should be under 1 in most cases. I ve had dozens of bottles over time and not had that. Interesting
I can't believe Marco gave away a Lagavulin 16, but Islay is not for everybody.
Last night was wee dram of Ardbeg Kelpie.
Tasting Note by The Producer
Nose:*A wonderful, intense, ‘dancing’ nose, with lots of different, intertwined aromas – powerful, oily peat, dark chocolate, smoked fish, hints of seaweed, and a curious, sharp herbal note. Waves of spicy black pepper.
Palate:*A peppery mouthfeel is followed by a crescendo of rich flavours. Treacle toffee, Turkish coffee, smoky bacon and lots of dark, dark chocolate. A curious burst of peachy, estery fruit, hickory wood, clove oil and a suggestion of black olives.
Finish:*Seemingly lasting forever, with deep, deep, almost subterranean flavours of clove, tar, and rich toffee.
I find it a rather pleasant Islay. Not too complex, but always enjoyable to drink.
My only complaint is that as a limited exition, replacement bottles are vettibg expensive.
The virgin black sea oak casks give this a certain flavour you don't get with mainstream Ardbegs.
