I've done quite a bit of whisky experimenting inspired by this thread over the past few months. I've discovered I really don't like the peaty/medicinal tastes which the Islays I've tried seem to have. Much more of a Speyside man I think, sherry or port cask finished. To be fair the "Gentleman Jack" wife bought for valentines has been one of my favourites. Haven't had Bushmills Irish whiskey in over 30 years but have ordered one as it was a favourite back in the day. Currently sipping a Glen Moray "Elgin Classic" port cask finish which is very nice.

My last Whisky Experiment i recall ended up in near death:(
My stag night to wife #1 - ex-father in law plied me with whisky and I reckon I drank more than a bottle. Never been so ill in my life, spent the whole next day puking and feeling like death warmed up. Worst hangover I've ever had. Tried whisky a few times over the next 25 years and couldn't stomach it, but late last year I seem to have recovered! Just a "wee dram" as they say, and appreciating some of the single malts. (Although I'm also really liking a Chivas Regal 12 Year Old Blended which was reasonably priced.)

Its dangerous shit. I polished off two pints of it in less than an hour is a foolish game. Was an Hospital job.
Its dangerous shit. I polished off two pints of it in less than an hour is a foolish game. Was an Hospital job.
To be fair, any spirit in two pint quantities would do that!
Treat spirits with care. Its powerful stuff and in sufficient quantities a poison.
A couple every second night is my max now, and that isn't by any means regular. I can easily do without ev en tho I've drank it all life.
Your not supposed to be getting pissed, your supposed to be savouring it, and enjoying its medicinal quality [emoji23][emoji41]

Right, we’ve weeded, cleaned the windows, dug out some evil brambles and been for a 4 mile walk.
Pina Colada time!

Bet they are a nightmare to suck thru. As hard as blowing thru a bog roll tube i guess
Don’t think I’ve ever had a pina colada in my life! Looks milky, which is probably why, one of the few things I can’t stand. Sounds like you had a great day though. We did similar - housework and a bit of DIY before dragging the kids away from Netflix/Xbox for a walk across the fields and then BBQ. Now chilling with a glass of Rioja and some choons in the kitchen.

Why? They’re just like a normal straw, only made of metal. Slightly bigger diameter if anything. So easier!

Lol - when you come down to the 'end of the lockdown' outdoor party we'll be having (when that occurs), you can bring down some of your whisky collection, and I'll sort out the wine and food!
Deal?:)

Actually, I rather like the look of that. Do you chill it? I'm thinking, put some chunky glasses in the freezer, so they come out nice and cold and cloudy, shove some ice in and a slice of lime, and pour the Tequila over it... :)

This looks really good.
Grant,
Pendleton 1910 12 year Rye .
It took drinking it straight, with a splash of water and with a couple cubes of ice to find out it is best with a single ice cube.
Ice brings out the Smokiness and with out thinning it.
I really like that it is smoother than most Rye whiskeys.
It is more expensive than Crown Royal Rye but about the same in quality. Sadly Crown Royal Northern Rye is hard to find right now but I can still get regular crown Royal blended whiskey easily and thats not a bad way to go either .

That may be a good shout Marco. Haven’t tried it with anything yet, just getting to know it. It has a very silky and quite refined character, only a light oiliness too. It’s lovely to actually just taste as is, will be interesting to try different temperatures.

a good inexpensive Scotch would be Glen Grant 10.. over here its under £30 and their Major's reserve is even cheaper. tomatin legacy is nice too, as is 10 yr old glenmorangie original. oh and glengoyne if you can get it...might be a bit more expensive tho. the sexton from ireland might be cheaper over there too. nice drop that and a crazy bottle

Lol - love it... That's better than most bars or hotels!!:eyebrows:
My wine 'cellar' in that respect is similar (more diverse selection, better quality) than that contained in most good restaurants! Currently I've got around 150 bottles, including table and dessert wines - and then there's the collection of aperitifs & digestifs, which numbers around 50-60 bottles, plus mixers for cocktails!:D
We're not alchies, lol - just enjoy having access to a nice selection of drinks, should we take the notion for something, plus we like to entertain....
That's why when we built our new kitchen, I made sure there was an area for me to use as a 'bar' for preparing drinks, along with a big cupboard to house all the different glasses! Plus, it meant that I could keep out of Del's way while she was cooking, as we'd be at opposite ends of the kitchen:)

Yeah; really enjoying it Grant.
Haven't had their stuff before; bought it from the Dunkeld Whisky Shop when we were up there in Feb; my brother had just landed, so we had a walk into Dunkeld in the snow, some lunch and then went to look the shop over as it was only a few months old. Some cracking stuff in there, gave us lots of tastes too, so came away with a nice sherried drop (the Glenrothes) and a young (only 15 year old haha) , sprightly and very green apple tasting peated bottle of Springbank (which I've supped already) haha :D

You have an amazing selection , I am ruined for ever on Scotch , in 1992 I could get a bottle of Mc Callan 21 year single malt for $75.00 a bottle or $7.00 a shot. Now for the same bottle $1,000 !!!

Scotch prices just exploded here 15 years ago and never came back down.
I used to treat my self to a bottle once every month or two . Lincoln Hill Golf course had very good bottle prices.
I will drink Johnny Walkers Black label once in a while but it is just not the same.
There is nothing better than a really mellow scotch .
Been a lovely day.. Mate gave me over a lager, so first beer in about 2/3 years

Bucky, but it's not available. Yay!
He doesn't usually drink beer much, as he is a wine guy...
Lol - it shows! He could've brought round a nice bottle of wine then instead... Must've thought you wouldn't have been cultured enough to appreciate it?:D;)
For me, pretty much all lager [not BEER though, I *must* make that distinction, as that's a different animal] made in the UK tastes like pishwater... Lager, or more correctly, Pils, is a foreign thing. We simply don't do it well, in the way that we can produce some truly outstanding, world-class real ales (beer), so I wouldn't touch any of the former with a bargepole.
I guess, as ever, it boils down to whether you drink lager (Pils) to savour and enjoy it, in moderation, and therefore appreciate it when it's done well, or simply neck it to get pished, in which case quantity (and price) will always outweigh quality.
Marco.

One of my pet hates.
For a few years I couldn't understand why it was that when on holiday, I would quite enjoy a lager, but back home it was so bland. I then found out that something like 90% of lager sold in supermarkets is actually brewed in the UK.
If I buy lager now I always check the small print

I don't like British brewed lager, it really is crap.
I noticed the local shop was empty earlier, so I popped in and treated myself to eight cans of Perla Mocna a Polish strong lager, at 7.6% it packs a decent punch, tastes nice too. I shall have a couple tonight, not had a beer for ages! Cheers!!

Indeed, and it's also why the likes of Stella Artois, enjoyed on draught in its native country of Belgium, is a totally different animal to the cack sold in cans here in supermarkets, under the same name, ditto Kronenbourg, San Miguel, Becks, etc..
It's also why I tend to avoid those (the more mainstream types of lager or beer) and opt for something more specialist, produced in smaller quantities. For example, right now I'm enjoying this superb, beautifully creamy craft beer from Poland [tip: craft beers, from ANY country, are often where it's *at*]:

I'm starting on a dozen bottles of Green King IPA and a dozen bottles of Old Speckled Hen I picked up today. :)
Grant,
Now here is your real cowboy whiskey. (Kentucky Rye)
Ice is a must , I could totally see Jack Palance drinking this from a tin cup next a camp fire . Pares nice with beef Jerky.
It really has a strong rye flavor and every shot after the first gets better and better. :eyebrows:
Not a cheap Rye $30.00 to $40.00 a bottle . It is the very creamy and stays on your pallet, it screams Rye flavor.
As I had to explain to Nosheen , My friend and I did not really drink that much, you have to take into account evaporation.
A different tattoo of a hot girl hidden in every bottle .
It dose not have the smoothness of real Cuban rum but its close enough you can drink it over ice and not so expensive that it can't be mixed with Coke.
Used to get good sailor here but they changed the recipe and last one I tried wasn't good. That looks more like the old stuff.
Nice drop if it is.
Not been on song today.. A bit lightheaded.. Kill or cure..
A nice drop thishttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200427/bf587315c5d387349183e0786e56affd.jpg
Nice it's been awhile since I've had a good scotch.
Maybe you got a bad barrel of sailor, sold to soon .
I have had this happen to me with other brands.
Irish malt tonight.

If I start on the malt now, I will be in some mess later on, haha
A miniature tonight.. Glendronach 15 revival.
Lots of sherry and Xmas fruits on the nose.
A nice oily mouthfeel with liquorice in there too maybe orange in the finish.
Quite like this, fairly complex and yet upfront dram.
Might have to buy a bottle
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200429/0e5bdfe1c210b1bf7a76af07b0e124e7.jpg
A new bottle today..
Gelstons 12yr old Rum finished Irish Whiskey.
6 months in rum casks have imparted a little nautical slant to this.. Quite oaky, this Belfast whiskey. A bit of lemon and possibly other fruits too. A bit of banana coming through now too.
Finish is quite warm and long.
edit.. it likes a drop of water:eyebrows:
a question for goraman, jeff.. what do you think of Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon??
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200430/e4c353c7a1ca3fa30b038d6fbb75ba07.jpg
So not too bad, but really improves with water if you get any. It's often on offer.. Not worth full price.
Grant, I think I have never tried it but I have heard of it. I used to drink scotch in my 20's and 30's I was lucky it was a time when very good stuff was affordable here in the U.S.
I am happy when I find a bottle of anything by anyone that tastes really good and can be had for under $50.00 to $60.00 a bottle or less.
My go to for an evening is Crown Royal for whiskey but it by the 1.75 liter, I just found a really good batch of Sailor Jerry's Rum and got a 1.75 liter bottle of that.
Smaller bottles 750ML or what we call a 5th. These are usually my better more expensive bottles I drink with friends and I try to keep them no more than $60.00.
I watch sales here a lot to try new whiskey's, In California alcohol has high taxes.
I am just now starting to try different whiskeys , when I was in High School Jack Daniels was 90 proof not 80 proof and that was the only whiskey of my generation.
I have a good friend one of my sons coaches who loves Irish Whiskey and his favorite is Red Breast . He said , I 'll let you try some next time you come over.
I have only tried Jameson and it was terrible.
I can get Sexton SM here for $27.00 here, I saw you liked it.
What is different about Irish whiskey?
You seem to really have a lot of knowledge in this area.
Red breast is nice. I've a stashed bottle of their 15yr old.
Red is what the Irish call single pot still whiskey and has a mash of both malted and UNMALTED barley, plus it may have some oats in too.
Pot still whiskey is a bit like scotch malt and a little Rye in thanks to the UNMALTED barley.

..guarenteed to get your eyesight back after 24 hrs  only joking.. if you like wheated then this is as good as youll find for reasonable money

Grant, you must have a very large collection of whiskeys .
How long have you been collecting them?
this lot varies but one goes back about 10/15yrs i guess .. my last bottle of george dickel in the old label.. not had heart to drink it as its a link to my past when i had a huge collecton, and especially bourbon... i got pissed off once and drank the lot over a period of a year and damn near killed myself... what a way to go it was tho:eyebrows:

Nice selection there Grant; the very first bottle, the Aberfeldy, is one of my main go to's for a supping whisky, it's very nice indeed :)
I just ordered a 2 liter white oak chard whiskey cask
It's small 2 liters, The idea is when you get down to the last few ounces in a bottle of Bourbon or Rye .
it gets pored into the cask and blends with the rest of your favorites.
Each blend different from the next or ever evolving as you add to it. While it mellows in the cask.
I am going to fill it and let it sit till next spring ,Baseball season and get my favorite coaches to gather for a glass.
All ready I have some Pendleton Rye, Bullet Rye ,Elijah Craig small batch,Crown Royal to put in it.

Marco, can you post details of the two wines again please can’t find the original post.
No worries, dude. Here ya go... Barolo DOCG:
https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/wines/barolo-docg/p12047
Squinzano Rosso Riserva, from Puglia:
https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/red-wine/squinzano-rosso-riserva/p30851
If your store has the same layout as ours, the Barolo, for some strange reason, will be located in the first main section of wine (where all the 'cheapy' stuff usually is), and the Squinzano will be in the 'posh section' inside the wooden crates nearest the checkouts.
I'll give you another couple of reccos too, which are very good indeed.... This is a really nice Côtes du Rhône (also should be located in the 'posh section'):
https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/red-wine/domaine-la-couquihado-rhone/p30850
As is this Sicilian red (gorgeously smooth and full-bodied), again should be located in the 'posh section':

Marco.
Just back from Lidl and have bought some of your recommendations - really looking forward to trying them out (I used to have a reds subscription with Laithwaites, but ended it when I retired, so now looking for quality reds at lower prices).
I managed to get:
2 x Terre Siciliane (lots in stock)
1x Barolo (2014 vintage - lots in stock and 2015, although I think you recommended the 2013)
1x Squinzano (last bottle in my local Lidl)
Any of these work well with beef Lasagne? I am making one for the family tonight (I don't want the tomato fighting the wine!)
Hi Guy, good stuff. Glad somewhere has them!:D
I'd go with either the Barolo or Squinzano, as the Terre Siciliane is probably best with a roast or steak. If you've not tried Sqinzano before, that might be a good shout for something a bit different.
Do ensure that you serve it at the right temperature (i use a small electric heater for this purpose, during the nice weather when the wood burner is off), which I simply sit the bottle on top of before it's been opened).
Just enough to take the 'chill off' should be fine, and most importantly, either allow it to breathe for an hour before serving, or ideally, decant it, simply to aerate the wine, which trust me makes a BIG difference to the flavour of ALL red wines [they don't need to be 'fancy' ones], simply by removing some excess acidity, thus opening up the fruit:)
Serve in large wine goblets (quarter full only), which will release the full bouquet. Oh, and please post some pics of your lasagne on the food thread later - enjoy!
Marco.
P.S If you don't already, put some red wine (a glass or so) into the meat for your lasagne, as that really lifts the flavour!
Back to a real drink.. Lol

Cheers Marco,
I haven't posted pictures of the lasagne (too late/old/lazy) - I did make two though, one with aduki beans to substitute for meat (youngest daughter, goes to uni' and comes home a vegetarian :)). Really a tip for food thread but aduki beans are really good taste (search "red dragon pie" if interested), I used to eat a lot of them when I went through my vegetarian period!
I went for the Squinzano. Thanks for the recommendations, put me in mind of a Merlot or young Pinot noir in flavour - stone fruit, light, smooth, very good value wine.
I didn't think it needed to breathe or be decanted though. I sneaked a taster while cooking and enjoyed its lightness and "youth" (is that a correct term for wine? I am certainly no expert, but that is the word that came to me ), I did decant and leave the rest of the bottle for an hour but I think that I preferred it straight out of the bottle. Whatever, certainly worthwhile :glug:
Good stuff, Guy. Hey, whatever works best for you. I've always found that pretty much any red wine, aside from very young, light varieties, such as Beaujolais Nouveau, Bardolino, etc, benefit in some way from aeration:)
Certainly 'supermarket quality' wines, which in comparison with fine-wines from specialists, sometimes have a slightly unpleasant and underlying acidic 'edge', and which for me aeration ameliorates, smoothing out the tannins and creating a rather more acceptable 'slurp', but it's all down to one's individual tastes and palate.
Anyway, glad you enjoyed the Squinzano, which is a bit of a bargain. Both the Barolo and Terre Siciliane, when you try them, should offer a notable step-up in quality. When the time comes, let me know what you think:cool:
Marco.

A SPLASH OF WATER OPENS THIS UP NICELY..
Conner's pitching coach and good friend of mine , invited us over for dinner and afterwards he opened a bottle of Red Breast Irish whiskey and pored it into a couple of special Glencairn tasting glasses.
It was a real treat. The best barley malt I've ever had . It was a good day because oddly enough I stopped by a Bel Air Grocery store on the way home from work ,not my regular store and as I was walking down the tea and coffee isle to get to the back of the store,I spotted something shocking!
Yorkshire Gold tea! I got 2 boxes and just had a cup while writing this , I see why it was so recommended here . The flavor is amazing and unique. It was a easy day at work on top of all that so win win.

Jameson owns Redbreast? I once bought a bottle of Jameson and it was terrible. It's like hearing Yugo makes Austin Martin!
I had the 12 year. He has several different bottles but the 12 was opened. Did you know they make a 27 year? You need 36 month financing to buy a bottle.
Do you ever drink wine, Jeff?:)

Still light here
Yup, it was just an arty moment
Do you ever drink wine, Jeff?:)
Marco.
I have had few few good wines, the best was a 1961 BV . It was very dry and red.
I like Red dry wines with pasta and sometimes red meat ,like steak but a few times a year.
I am more of a malt guy. I like lager, pilsner and hefeweizen beers, Whiskeys of all stripes and a hand full of Rums. Don't care for Gin,Vodka,Tequila or liquors.
The wine bug never bit, and I don't live far from Napa Valley. This is my favorite red. In the little town of Plymouth they make this outstanding red wine. There Sarah is my favorite but I will drink their Barbera it is slightly sweet but good. https://www.wine.com/product/terra-doro-barbera-2017/525706#
It used to be called the Montavina winery but after winning a lot of awards the same family changed the name to Terra Deoro .
It is well regarded and there better vintages are around $40.00 a bottle but it gets bought up very fast so it pays to be a member of the winery.( The members go back 20 years or more and get to taste and buy wines before they are sold to suppliers). I know one of there members and have been to their tastings a couple times even back in the Monitavina days so I usually get a couple really good bottles a year.
If a wine is to sweet it is a real turn off for me, so I rarely order more than a glass to taste it first. If I like it I'll get a bottle or carafe.

No worries, just wondered. For me red wine (especially) is a drink simply to accompany food, particularly a nice juicy steak!
I never drink red wine on its own, white wine only occasionally on its own, but only in the summer, well chilled, ditto rosé. Malt whisky is a different ball game, in that respect, and doesn't require the intake of food to be enjoyed.
So maybe tell us next time when you open a bottle of red? In terms of the bit in bold about beer, I'd like to hear more about that... Remember that this is a beer thread, just as much as a wine and whisky one!;)
And I *love* proper (authentic) American beers and lagers:cool:
Marco.

Your last statement makes me really miss the late 70's and most of the 80's. The best American beer days where both before and during the Beer wars. The Budweiser,Shlitz ,Coors, Michelob, Papst, Miller ,Olympia where amazing beers as good as the micro brew stuff being sold at much higher prices today. The beer wars ended in 2 winners Bud and Coors . Also the at the same time the desire of these companies to go international meant huge changes had to happen in the way these beers where brewed. Bud and Shlitz where the top 2 beers West coast and East coast favorites. Bud made the move to go international increasing it's market through out the world.
Shlitz had a huge problem their union workers refused to get in line with the idea of changing the refinery to produce more beer and went on strike. The strike lasted just long enough the company had lost some of it's market and what happened next no one saw coming Stroh's came out of no where to buy Shlitz then gutted the company and used the name to sell absolute swill.
In the huge effort to go from a national brand to an international icon Bud had to step up production on a massive scale ,this means speeding up the brewing process adding defoamers then adding something else to remove them near the end of the process, Bud changed through the 80's and so did Coors they where the big winners but the beer is not the same as what it was. https://www.foodandwine.com/drinks/these-commercials-show-why-budweiser-won-beer-wars
Moving to today, this has caused a glut of small micro brewerys, some go away others pop up, there are new beers every day by new brewers. In Ca. you would go crazy just trying to keep up with who makes what, what is the popular beer this week. In a sea of micro brews made locally, I choose German and Belgian brews because the trend is IPA, Double IPA and even triple IPA's. Lager's and Pilsners are not the rage right now.
I like a IPA made by Strike it's called the two seam 6.5% alcohol . Strike make another IPA that is close to 9% ! but it dose not have the same taste.
So I get imports when I can and drink Stella and Heineken most the time and look for German Beers when I go to Bevmo but they are like a treat.
We seem to be having another beer war now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuBwPWtwimI

Pain is driving me mad so will have a dram.
This glengoyne 12 is a personal fav. Sherried, and relatively smooth for age. Great mouthfeel and finish.
Super value. You can't go wrong with the 12.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200510/92cb9df8a9546bd303de9167a90124ec.jpg

I wish you guys where with in driving distance, not sure if I could even ship booze after the seal is broken.
I just ordered a 2 liter French white oak level 3 chard mini barrel.
My plan is to seal /cure it, let it pickle in a good spiced rum for 2 months drain it dry into a glass 2 liter bottle as a mixer Rum.
Then use the barrel to finish a 100% Rye whiskey for a year possibly to 2 years depending on taste I'll taste after the 1st year to decide if it's ready.
This is going to be the Rye. Bottled in bond , so it's a good candidate for a double cask finish. https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/rittenhouse/rittenhouse-straight-rye-100-proof-whiskey/
I will season the barrel for 2 months with Sailor Jerry's Rum. This will add some sweet molasses, date flavors to the other wise Earthy Rye.
My hope is they will get along after a year or two and make for a nice drink.
I wish I could share the out come with you guys.
I often think rum is over looked , you can get a nice Dark Bumbu small batch 15 year for $35.00 here ! Dark Rum is so under appreciated in the U.S.
It can impart so many complex flavors , it really shouldn't be over looked. https://www.totalwine.com/spirits/rum/aged-rum/bumbu-rum/p/183696750-1?glia=true&s=1101&pid=cpc:utm_source=Google:utm_campaign=Shopping%2B US%2BCALI%2BENG%2BSPART:utm_term=&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIn9jawoms6QIV8wl9Ch3PaQBzEAYYASAB EgJnyfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
The Rittenhouse is a good starting point and fairly cheap... and no, you cant ship spirit alcohol with a broken seal(legally). In Fact its difficult to ship period unless your a company.
Sounds like a good plan tho.. not sure i will deffo be around that long so i dont make long term plans:)

It's actually not a bad drop that Marco ;) You've surprised me with your enhanced tastes ;) :p :D
Unfortunately I'm off the beer currently; having various stomach issues (IBS related and ale, to my bloody annoyance, is one of the worst things; onions and garlic the same - any of it and I'm ill for days)
I've been on a few of these tonight; great peat monsters:

I believe Bushmills are the oldest Irish distillery. I quite like Bkack Bush which is the next step up in there non age stated blended range.
It's a good whiskey for €30 a bottle.

Only "Hatherwood" beers in my nearest Lidl - tried some before for Christmas and was disappointed, lacked body across the range (although they were cheap).
So I bought some St Austell brewery "proper job" IPA and some "Tribute".
Funny when I think about it; your branch in Wales get Scottish beer, my branch in Suffolk gets Cornish - I wonder if Scottish branches get Adnams or Brains as some sort of cultural exchange program?
Another new bottle opened today.
Enjoy it while I can [emoji3]

marco.
yup in my sands... Rather nice drop of rye
Lidl bargain alert!
Just got in having finally drained an old oil tank in my garden and thought that I deserved a beer.
St Austel "proper job" £1.49 a bottle:
pale golden IPA - at first glance I thought it looked a bit like a lager, perhaps more golden.
Very light malt/creamy scent with a touch of citrus.
It doesn't look very fizzy/carbonated but when it gets in the mouth a very fine expansion of bubbles, lovely mousse.
Taste, surprising - light malt/toffee, nettles/grass? some citrus but not over the top grapefruit like some.
Must be careful with this - 5.5% and doesn't feel like it, I could end up drinking it like a session beer and fall over when I go to pour myself my fifth or sixth bottle.

Unfortunately not - see post 2698.
Bit disappointed about that, but very pleased with the "proper job" - will need to find an excuse to go back for more.
My understanding for Rye is the first 6 weeks of barrel aging is the spirit taking on the sugars and tannins of the chard wood and the next 4 years of the aging proses is those same sugars and tannins being broken down.
The latter part just can't be rushed and very little occurs after 6 years so for Rye 6 years is a good time to bottle it. Some even argue there is a point that Rye breaks down so much you start to loose some of the flavor.
Grant, may be able to touch more on this,I am sure he knows more about whiskey than the well known ascot waring reviewer. Sorry, but if you are waring an ascot in the 21st century you probably ware long over coats at kids play grounds in the summer too.
More Irish tonight (think I preferred the Bushmills).

Sorry, but if you are waring an ascot in the 21st century you probably ware long over coats at kids play grounds in the summer too.Rye is same as bourbon regs in many ways. It you want to call it straight rye it has to be aged min 2 years. Under 4 it has to have an age statement.
Traditionally rye had 100% rye content and was called the Monongahela style. Most rye now don't go that far but mid West rye like templeton use the 95% rye, 5 % barley mash Bill which is made in Indiana by mgp. It is the same base stuff that many other brands use. In fact templeton got done for label irregularities a few years ago. They are distilling their own now but it won't be sold til 2022.
Templeton was said to be Al Capone's fav and they try to achieve the same taste by adding a flavour addition.
Redemption is the same distill base. The use of new char oak, like bourbon and level of char impacts on the flavour and colour. So if there is no age statement on rye it's over 4.
Forgot re your point on tannins. Yes tannins come from the oak and give both, an astringincy and colour, a bit like it does in tea.
Tanin helps get rid of sulphur present in the mashbill and lingins in the oak, and produce those lively vanillas etc.
That's about all I know

Another new distillery in Dublin, but because of the family history the whiskeys they're selling are mainly from vintage barrels.
While they are busy producing and aging their own stock.

Best Whiskey in my hidey hole.Looks a nice colour. I've not tried their rye, but their bourbon is quite good value.

Can't go wrong at $22.00 to $25,00 a bottle Grant. It is a wave of fruits and spices with a nice chocolate cinnamon oak at the back of your tong.
Anybody interested in trying Irish whiskeys should give some of the Teelings whiskeys a go. Another new distillery in Dublin, but because of the family history the whiskeys they're selling are mainly from vintage barrels.
While they are busy producing and aging their own stock.

Grant, what do you think of Rittenhouse, I was going to recask some but the Old Forester is so good I will probably go with that.
I have not had Rittenhouse but it has a fallowing here for old Fashions.

yup, its from the Cooley stable, and they, unusually for Ireland only distill twice. this one got 93/100 from mr murray's bible
Fettercairn Fasque tonight.. Alas when this bottle is finished then there is no more.
Quality stuff and I should have bought more at time. Doh

I'll be getting a bottle of Rittenhouse at some time. Every reviewer that has tried the Old F'er has absolutely loved it .
Having just had a couple glasses my self ,i can say it is the best rye I have tried and has some of the flavors of an Irish malt .
I really think you would love it, some have said they spent the money on the mash not the bottle.

We have a similar and opposite problem the us has. Imported stuff from States is usually very expensive or not available at all.
Scotch is probably similar over there. Pikesville rye as an instance is £72 here plus delivery a bottle taking it into luxury levels

Here it is $45.00 to $55.00 for Pikesville 110, but we have sales tax and taxes on booze. $50.00 + tax $56.55 in California.
Funny UPS U.S. Roseville to Council Flats , Scotland 5 lbs. small box is $45.00!
And I still couldn't send it ,because , NO FLAMMABLES!
72£ is about 87 dollars these days. Still we have a world of Scotch right here and all the Irish on the doorstep, so shouldn't complain
Dillons 3 oaks rye

Looks promising Grant the color of that rye is pure sunshine.
I normally like a darker drop but I've had golden yellow with a lot of fruitiness and still some spice, I wonder how much of the mash bill is corn?
Could be i'm way off but most of the rye Ive had that have that golden yellow color are 51% rye and 49% corn and they tend to be a little sweeter.
It's 10% malted rye, 90% unmalted rye.. All Canadian. Then in 3 different oak casks.
Dry and spicy. Needs a drop of h2o for me
Tbh it could probably use a bit of corn sweetness
$60.00 in the U.S.

I'm on the hunt!
Kraken is the worse Rum ever, and not because its a Dark Rum,I like a good Dark Rum . It's bad because it's fortified molasses.(Nasty sweet tar)
It's thick and way overly crude. So I tried to mix it with Sailor Jerry's to thin it out and break the sweet black tar into something drinkable.
No such luck, so I mixed in tome Coke zero because the last thing this needed was more sugar.
It is nearly drinkable but not my favorite so I will give this bottle to anyone that will take it and in my neighborhood it won't be to hard.

Tamnavulin tonight.. Sherried one this, and was good value in a litre bottle.

I pored boiling water in and after a couple hours there was just a couple small areas seeping,so I dumped out the water and rinsed out loose charcoal till it was clean.
Refilled with water and sealed the whole cask with a heat gun and 100% natural bees wax.
After letting it air out. I filled it full of Sailor Jerry's Rum and it will soak into the wood for 2 months then be drained out let air and filled with Old Foresters Rye Whiskey 100 proof for 1 year.
It dose hold every bit of 2 liters. I want it to swell mostly with Rum not so much water so the cask will be able to impart some of the sweet spice notes to the Rye whiskey.
July 18 Conner's 11th Birthday will be 2 mouths, So Rum time! When Conner turns 12 years old.Whiskey Time!!!
Rum cask rye.. Interesting concept. Not sure I've seen a commercial version. You might have hit on something

I'm sure it's been done. I got the Idea from Red Breast in a Sherry cask and thought , I like Rum ,it's sweet like Sherry... Hmmm Rum cask and Rye Whiskey?
Nosheen gave me a shelf in the kitchen to put my whiskey glasses in.
But my drinking is still in the closet.

Not tasted that one, looks really nice
really good stuff... great distillery tbh.. the 15 is the sherry king and great value; the 25 is absolutely stunning for the money too
Grant, You have an amazing stash of really good top shelf booze.
What is the top 10 on your favorites list?
I am thinking most if not all will be fine scotches.
Here in the U.S. right now the coveted bottles seems to be Pappy Van Winkle and Whistle Pig.
I have seen Whistle Pig 6 year for sale but way over MSRP , even though it is illegal to price gouge during a crises.
Liquor sellers just got put on notice for this and there is a class action law suite so it is a good time to buy at the higher end.
I have wanted to try W.P. but not at $30% over full retail .
Seems Covid 19 has sold a lot of good booze and as the better stuff comes down to realistic prices I may get a bottle.

It was good but not worth 120.
Tbh preferred wellers wheated but you can't get that now.
Top 10, will have a think.
Having another Glenfarclas

Not tried this before. Bought on a whim some time ago so time to try. Nikka from the barrel.. This is 51.4% so potent stuff.
A mix of whiskies from a mix of barrel types. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200521/ecf607507ecd8624e9d8849a4771eb82.jpg
Nose is very floral and vanilla.
edit... very smooth for 51%.. a little drop of water has opened up the spices and fruit... quite nice this for a blend...:)
Picked up this today.
I don't know how good it is but it has been years since I've had a scotch.
Any good?
One of the best distilleries in the Highlands. Is it their new 43% 12yr old?
I've a bottle of legacy open at moment and a lovely delacate whisky. I've also a fancier one at cask strength.
You'll enjoy that. Don't be afraid to pop a spot of spring water in if it is a little firey.
