hopefully robin... it took place of this...
Glenfiddich Project XX The second release in Glenfiddich's Experimental Series is their Project XX expression, which was made not simply by one Malt Master, but 20! 20 Malt Masters were invited to the Glenfiddich distillery and invited them to pick any expression from the thousands of casks maturing in the warehouse. The 20 chosen whiskies were then married by Malt Master Brian Kinsman to create this single malt you see before your eyes. Hooray for teamwork!

Will be interested to know how you find it, not a huge fan of the standard Glenfiddich but I do have a couple of bottles a 14 year old and something else.

I'm not drinking now anyways so they will just sit there, hopefully going up in price [emoji23]

I assumed you were not drinking currently, lack of posts, the price will go up for a bit until the bubble bursts or people learn that there’s lots of good whisky out there.

2020 Madirazza Plavac Mali
https://www.wine-searcher.com/images/labels/32/19/11313219.jpg?width=466&height=400&fit=bounds
Country: Croatia
SubRegion: Srednja i južna Dalmacija
Appellation: Pelješac
Plavac Mali is a well-known red wine grape in its homeland of Croatia, providing the basis of many of the nation's most sought-after red wines. It is one of Croatia's most planted varieties.
Plavac Mali is known for producing dense and robust reds with black cherry flavors and notes of pepper, smoke and spice. They are often quite high in alcohol and tannins, and have excellent aging capabilities, a trait not often seen in Croatian wine.
The variety's name comes from the appearance of the grapes: mali means small, while plavac – a prefix given to several Croatian varieties – refers to the blue color of the berries. These are small and thick-skinned with high sugar concentration, giving structured, tannic wines that are sometimes produced with a little residual sugar to provide a softening effect.
13% ABV, Roughly £6 a bottle.

Dont think I have tasted wine from Croatia, but the price looks great.
I knew that Croatia, and the whole of the Dalmation coast (including Albania) was a wine producing region, but it was not until I visited there recently did I have a chance to sample, and bring back a few bottles.
Not only is the wine of excellent quality, but it is cheap, often less than €10. Of course there are some regions and vinyards that have a very good reputation, and for these one can pay €50-60 a bottle.
We drank mostly red wine, but as seafood is very popular in Croatia, having a long coastline, we did try a couple of whites. One of which was
2021 Graševina Vina Belje
https://shop.belje.hr/wp-content/uploads/sites/136/2018/04/VB_Premium_Grasevina_075L_bez_godine.png
Premium Graševina is Belje’s most important wine. It reflects the full potential of Baranya’s vineyards, is widely available to customers due to its price and regularly declared by the Croatian media to be exceptional value for money. Belje’s Premium Graševina is an original wine which exhibits a blend of citrus aromas (tangerine and grapefruit) with touches of green apple and a very strong minerality. The long aftertaste features both a light almondy bitterness and the specific chamomile taste so typical of the Eastern Croatian dry Graševina wines.
Premium Graševina is usually served with smoked meat, roast chicken, roast turkey or grilled pork chops. We at Belje believe, though, that its gastronomic potential is much wider and recommend it with premium freshwater fish like zander, premium sea fish like sea bass, and sole, and small sea fish like sardines.
12.5% ABV and about €7 a bottle.

https://s7e5a.scene7.com/is/image/waitrose/CellarProductDetailMainImage/417872_a_chateau-lalande-dauvion-medoc-cru
With succulent rich berry fruit flavours, this sumptuous wine is silky textured, with a complex round palate, fine-grained tannins, and excellent concentration.
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet franc grape.
13% ABV, £10 a bottle (reduced from £15 in Waitrows)

2018 Château Roquegrave, Médoc
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/3775318b.png
Château Roquegrave is a family owned estate, comprising 30 hectares of vineyards planted on a high plateau with a commanding view of the Gironde estuary. With an average age of 25 years, the vines are carefully tended by winemaker and owner Pierre Yves Joannon.
2018 was not expected to be a good year for Bordeaux, as many vineyards were caught out by the humid conditions of spring. Low yields and great summer weather right through to harvest, however, has ensured exceptional quality – "legends in the making" wrote RobertParker.com. So a rich, complex claret, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a splash of Petit Verdot, all aged in fine French oak. A supple Bordeaux, worthy of its acclaim.
14% ABV About £15 a bottle

Chivas Regal XV Balmain Limited Edition (70cl, 40%)
This was finished in casks that previously held Grande Champagne Cognac, and you can immediately tell by nose, taste and finish.... very interesting and quite moreish..
sweet in palate and lots of vanilla in the excellent finish, along with the cognac influence of course. good clean nose with nice fruity edge... pears appearing in finish too.
altogether a damn fine dram, at going price it may just be a tad expensive at 60 notes...but hey i didnt pay:D

I bought a bottle of Pappy once. It was fairly old and dusty and cork disintegrated in bottle [emoji23]

Located on the famous Right Bank alongside Saint-Émilion and Pomerol stands Château du Gazin. Since 1532 the château has been producing wines, but a new chapter began when the Robert family, originally from Burgundy, acquired the estate almost 90 years ago. The vineyards were revitalised and since 2018 the estate has been converting their wines to organic. Château du Gazin is from vineyards in the Canon-Fronsac. The appellation lies upon clay-limestone soils, similar to those found in Saint-Émilion, and is known for its big full-bodied reds. This 2018 is mostly Merlot with red berry Cabernet Franc and juicy Malbec. It shows dark berry fruit with hints of mocha and smoky oak.
85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec.
14.5% ABV. About £20 a bottle.

2018 L'Epiphanie de Pauillac
https://images.vivino.com/thumbs/jGIh8h39RFOjwTcJQoJIkw_pb_x600.png
L’Épiphanie de Pauillac hails from Pauillac’s top tier – a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate. There are only three estates in the appellation: Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild and Latour.
This wine is from one of them. It isn’t their Grand Vin, of course, but it’s made from the same fruit by the same winemaker and housed in the same barrels. Yet it costs less than 1/16th of the Grand Vin’s price.
L’Épiphanie de Pauillac has blackcurrant, cherry and ripe plum infused with subtle spice, cedar and cigar box notes. These classic aromas combine with firm tannins for a complex wine with a long finish. Can be drunk now, but cellaring will pay dividends.
14% ABV, £25 a bottle

2018 Château Roquegrave, Médoc
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/3775318b.png
Château Roquegrave – a family owned estate comprising 30 hectares of vineyards planted on a high plateau with a commanding view of the Gironde estuary. With an average age of 25 years, the vines are carefully tended by winemaker and owner Pierre Yves Joannon. 2018 was no dream year for Bordeaux, as many vineyards were caught out by the humid conditions of spring. Low yields and great summer weather right through to harvest, however, has ensured exceptional quality – "legends in the making". a rich, complex claret, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Merlot (45%) with a splash of Petit Verdot (5%), all aged in fine French oak. A supple Bordeaux, worthy of its acclaim.
14% ABV About £12 a bottle.

Yes, there are decent blends and 70% malt from Ardnamurchan is a very decent dram
Lochlea Harvest Edition..
Sweet vanilla, and caramel on the nose with a little port style fruit in the back. Taste is vanilla with a touch of banana and lots of cinnamon, finishing with the spices again. Not long but quite satisfactory. For a young dram this is nice.
Obvious it's been mostly in Bourbon casks but I think there may be the odd one or two in sherry and maybe port as well.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230716/4048c645629d927ae6bbb997d986e696.jpg

Carn Mor strictly ltd. Glentauchers 9 yr old (2010). I blew a lot of dust off this as its been in collection for a while now. a big fruitcake on the nose; a sweet one at that with a bit of furniture polish there too. this continues to the big bold taste of spices, sherry and apple pie. Tastes wonderful and just hangs in there all the way through the long finish. not quite hot but very spicy and a bit of sweet sherry along with the drying oak behind it..

The first and second were both Glen Ord , the same whisky but with different abv and finish, nearly bought the second one very limited bottling. All the whiskies were from independent bottler Morrison , I did buy the second last one which was pleated but not too much, Mac Tale Mara. My least favorite was the Old Perth which was a surprise , just found it a bit sweet for my taste.

2019 B by Fonbadet, Bordeaux
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/4252119b.png
From a fourth-generation-owned Pauillac cellar, B de Fonbadet may fall under the humble Bordeaux label, but it’s intensity and complexity leave no doubt about its high-end quality. This 2019 has even won the Decanter’s esteemed Platinum medal.
Château Fonbadet is a small, family-run winery in the heart of Pauillac, neighbouring Bordeaux icons like Mouton-Rothschild and Latour. The Peyronie family, the current owners, can trace their ancestry in the region back to the 1700s. However, in the early 20th century they finally bought the keys to Château Fonbadet. Today, great-granddaughter, Pascale Peyronie, continues the family legacy producing many award-winning wines. B de Fonbadet is a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Rich in black fruits with a floral lift, mellow tannins, and layers of chocolate and tobacco from six months in oak, deserving of its 2021 Platinum award.
13.5% ABV Drink by end 2030. About £15 a bottle

its youngish but quite decent. maybe not at its pricepoint currently but i think i paid 58 at time and its maybe nearing that for a new distillery's wares these days. the first age statement came out recently as a 10, and currently abut 58/60 notes shows the difference. i got a bottle from the distillery for 50 shipped to me; not opened it yet.
whisky tops up my painkillers a bit and helps me a fair bit currently and my hip has deteriorated recently badly... at times i cant walk even with crutches.... hip ops are 2/3 yrs down line if all goes well so i dunno...
anyway cheers to the whisky world  where would we be without it

Peated or non peated?
if non peated maybe a Deanston 18 yr old, or maybe stretch to a Glenmorangie 18 yr old rare... both lovely, if different drinks.
a bit cheaper with a Glenfiddich project xx... youll get 2 bottles and its very nice
Thanks guys. I went not peated.
Not a great choice locally, so I got a Gordon and Macphail Miltonduff 10 YO.

I found a bottle of Old Pulteney 21 in a local shop. It is relatively expensive, but I believe it has now been discontinued and is a very good whisky.
The question is, do you think it is "worth" €150.
It was in the ship where I bought the Miltonduff, and I was torn between the two. Thinking about it, it was probably an 18 YO.
Most likely an 18 at that price. Imo you can do better for less over here. Not that it's not a nice dram as it is but it's pricier than it should be.

I agree
So the Miltonduff at less than 50% was probably the better choice.

Probably, would need to be twice as good to justify the higher price, as Grant stated earlier sometimes you can buy 2 bottles of very decent whisky for the price of a more expensive one.

financially it was yes. i find in general an 18 shouldnt be over a ton, and hopefully a fair bit less. tbh 15 is a better buy generally as its probably aged as well as its going to without it getting too pricey.. 10 is oft just a tad young, but not always.. 12 to 16 is the sweet spot for me. but i find the deanston range very good and their 18 is a cracker and only about 80-ish... used to be late 60s to 70 notes.

Château Moulin du Prieur, Bordeaux AOC 2021
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/3752621b.png
A wine from Ludovic Roussillon, the winemaker behind the generous ripe fruit and velvety tannins of Château Le Coin. The Moulin du Prieur has the same appealing style. The 2021 vintage is packed with creamy blackberry, plum and spice notes.
Ludovic Roussillon is one of the top viticulteurs in Bordeaux’s Entre-Deux-Mers. This is another wine from his vineyards – mostly Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon – all vinified to bring out the fruit richness, supported by sleek tannins. Rethink Bordeaux with this supple, generously fruity, rounded red.
Best to drink before the end of 2025, but can be drunk now.
13.5% ABV £14.99 a bottle
Château Les Moutins, Bordeaux AOP 2019
https://www.averys.com/images/uk/en/law/product/4149119b.png
Château Les Moutins lies on the Right Bank of the Garonne. It has been family owned since 1852 and boasts 60 hectares of vineyard, most of those are over 20 years old. The clay, limestone and chalk soils are key to the freshness and expressive aromas of the wine, redolent of ripe plum, redcurrant and rose petal. Merlot is the main grape on this side of the river, which accounts for the bold, radiant red robe, the nose unveils light and fruity aromas. Suave and smooth opening on the palate, with great roundness and balance.
2019 was a great vintage – well balanced with deliciously ripe fruit. Nearly-all Merlot, this claret can be driunk now and over the next 4 years.
Winner of 7 Gold medals by international judging panels.
13% ABV £17 a bottle
L'Epiphanie de Pauillac, Pauillac AOC 2018
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/3882018b.png
L’Épiphanie de Pauillac hails from a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate. There are only three in the appellation: Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild and Latour. By all means open a bottle now, but cellaring will pay dividends.
Drink by end 2028.
14% ABV £27 a bottle
Clarendelle by Haut-Brion, Médoc AOC 2018
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/3378018b.png
American financier Clarence Dillon visited Bordeaux in 1934 and fell in love with world famous Château Haut-Brion. The estate wasn’t then in peak form, but that didn’t put him off one iota. Certain it was the jewel of Bordeaux, he bought it and so started his family’s long commitment to the region and fine wine. In 1983 they purchased La Mission Haut-Brion, next door, and the family have since extended their portfolio to other areas of Bordeaux. Clarendelle is the initiative of Clarence Dillon’s great grandson, Prince Robert of Luxembourg. This is their superb Médoc, using quality grapes from their impressive portfolio of properties so as to express the very best of an excellent vintage. Only released when ready, it’s a fine red meat wine.
Drink by end of 2030.

Château Le Coin, Bordeaux 2020
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/0607720b.png
I've always liked this Bordeaux, and have posted here on other year's vintages. But this 2020 vintage continues the reliable quality of this Château, so I'm posting about it again.
The "noise" surrounding Bordeaux is usually focused on the unreachable 1er growths. But, if you know where to look, there are bargains to be found. Ludovic Roussillon’s Château Le Coin is the perfect example. Thanks to the strict, historic appellation boundaries, Ludovic’s estate shares the same fine, Saint-Emilion limestone soil but falls just outside the official boundary, on the other side of the river. Meaning top-shelf wine but without the eyewatering price. Ludovic Roussillon isa one-man-band, growing his own grapes and making his own wine And his efforts pay off, winning countless Golds for his silky, rich claret.
Tasting notes: Smooth and silky with ripe damson, cassis fruit; hints of spicy oak
Aroma: Ripe plum with notes of tobacco and spice
14.5% ABV About £12 a bottle

This cuvée comes from one of Paulliac's most prestigious châteaux, a Premier Grand Cru Classé known for its exceptional terroir and fine wines of great elegance. 2018 Château Bois de Galet, Bordeaux
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/4057018b.png
Château Bois de Galet lies in the commune of Vignonet on the banks of the Dordogne. Family owned for three generations, the fifteen hectares estate is planted with the region's classic grape varieties on clay-limestone soils. The vines are grown with minimal intervention and every parcel is carefully tended to ensure full expression of this outstanding terroir. Château Bois de Galet is a deep ruby colour with ripe black fruit flavours, especially blackcurrent, velvety tannins and excellent balance and length.
Bordeaux's 2018 vintage was an "an exceptional year", producing "wonderful wines with a beautiful depth of ripe fruit and polished, strong tannins." In the early stages, however, it was a difficult vintage, but hot sunny weather from June until post harvest remedied that, hence the ecstatic praise from critics.
This wine is a blend of predominantly Merlot, plus Malbec and both Cabernets.

https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/3752621b.png
Château Moulin du Prieur is a blend of old vine Merlot and Cabernet Franc with a small parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon to give added structure and complexity to the classic ripe plumb, cassis and spice aromas and flavours.
Expressive black fruit notes, velvety tannins and a long finish make for a wine that can be enjoyed now and if given time and cellared well, will develop further complexity in bottle.

Laphroaig Islay whisky
https://img.thewhiskyexchange.com/900/lrgob.10yov1.jpg
Laphroaig 10 year old is a full-bodied, smoky gem, with a residual sweetness and a hint of salt amid the seaweedy, peaty characters before a long warming finish. A classic dram.

Château d'Anvichar Côtes de Bordeaux 2019
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/2055519b.png
The wines of Castillon can be just as good as Saint Emilion next door, and many critics and top winemakers agree: "Top Castillons are already good enough to make many Saint Emilion proprietors blush”, while famous names such as Derenoncourt and Graf von Neipperg have bought estates there.
Château d’Anvichar has just five hectares of 35 year old vines on a limestone plateau – ideal for concentrated fruit. Owned and run by Vincent Galineau, a third generation winemaker, it’s named after his three sons, Antoine, Victor and Charles. Matured for a year in French oak, this is a silky, rich fruit claret.
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/tastingnote/map/LRM_france_bordeaux_cotesdecastillon.jpg
Château d'Anvichar is an elegant, expressive wine with bramble fruit, black cherry, vanilla and spice on the nose and palate. Firmly structured with a silky texture and a long ripe fruit finish. Can be drunk now or cellared to develop further complexity. Decant carefully an hour before consumption.
15% ABV About £15 a bottle. Drink by end of 2023.
Just ordered a case of the 2020 L'Éphiphanie de Margaux
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/2876120b.png
While this is definitely not their Grand Vin (you'd have to pay £600 a bottle for that), it is made from the same grapes, by the same team, with the same lavish no-expense-spared expertise. All classic ripe black fruit character, alongside cherry and plum, infused with subtle spice, cedar and tobacco. Triple Gold Medal winner.
14.5% ABV About £38 a bottle.
And a case of the 2020 Château Le Bonaguet
https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/images/uk/en/law/product/2901120b.png
Not many wines can boast 23 top Gold medals in six years, but that’s the triumphant haul for this claret, 2015 to 2020. It’s from a small estate in Saint-Germain du Puch, between Bordeaux and Saint-Emilion. The estate grows Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet on clay and limestone soils typical of the greater Saint-Emilion region. Winner of six Gold medals.
13.5% ABV About £18 a bottle
Bunna 12 today.. a fav of mine this... quality stuff at a resonable pricepoint
Bunnahabhain was founded in 1881 by William Robertson and brothers James and William Greenless. A very smooth, easy-drinking Islay malt, Bunnahabhain (pronounced ‘BOO-na-HAven’) closed and reopened twice during the twentieth century and eventually production was limited to a mere few weeks annually following Edrington's 1999 acquisition of previous owners Highland Distillers.
In 2003, Edrington sold Bunnahabhain to Burn Stewart Distilleries for £10 million. Included in this deal was the popular blend Black Bottle, whose contents feature a quantity of spirit from every distillery on Islay.
Today, Bunnahabhain production stands at 2.5million litres a year. Of this, 21,000 casks are kept at the distillery for maturation and the resultant whisky will be used for the Black Bottle blend and for bottling as Bunnahabhain single malt. The rest of the outturn is sent for maturation elsewhere.
In relative solitude, Bunnahabhain is the Northern-most Islay distillery. It sits in a large bay to the North East of the isle, drawing its water from the Margadale Spring.
