13% ABV £15 a bottle
Though less of a primadonna than thinner skinned varieties, nonetheless the Bordeaux star grape, Cabernet Sauvignon, makes some demands of its own. To perform well in a maritime climate like Bordeaux, it needs well-draining gravel soils to help it ripen fully. Unfortunately, wines meriting only the broad Haut-Médoc appellation can be rather simple, due to haphazard pockets of gravel in predominately heavier clay soils.
Clay lacks the heat transferring properties of gravel, so grown in it, Cabernet Sauvignon may have difficulty developing maturity and complexity in finished wines from the region.

Slightly off OP, but Friday last was 'Martini Night'. Junipero Gin, produced by The Anchor Distilling Co. of San Francisco [@ 49.3%], and vermouth by Noilly Prat [@18%], then, once the posh stuff was done, Tanqueray Export Strength [43.1%]. Spent Saturday in bed with a katzenjammer.
That American import was a little too strong for me, though I understand they do a 98% version of the Junipero: Angels and Ministers of Grace defend us!

Very nice that was too!Mix with coke, or better still, proper ginger beer and squeeze in a wedge of lime, known as a Dark & Stormy - my favourite thing to do with spiced rum. :)

As I don't drink much now I might as well see it out. Always collected whiskies and brandies for some reason. It's not all there but most of it

Its a relatively dull spot and there was a shelf going spare. The moth is over where the light is as its under staircase technically although in kitchen, its pretty dark and the slope doent allow for a light. This thing is led but when plugged in is quie bright. Dont use the cleaner uch now, and it may be sold soon if I sell up my vinyl front end. No decision has been made on it tho.

im not a big drinker,3 pints and im anybody's. the pain killer thread has made me think id like to try a glass or 2 of something nice to unwind after a hard day at work.
i cant drink red wine it tastes awful to me,its not price dependent either.

no point in buying good whisky like a malt if your gonna blaspheme into it with ginger ale :D . any whisky within reason will do for that. Maybe a nice vodka like ciroc its drinkable straight or with a mixerand wont give you a sore head.

I drink beer and wine but recently anything with any amount of fizz in it affects my digestive system adversely. Does anyone know if it is possible to get flat (still?) bottled beer in the shops - I rarely visit pubs these days. At the moment I'm restricting myself to wine but would like a bit of variety in my boozing. Cheers.

Belhaven are doing a grapefruit IPA at M&S, lovely. They chop and throw in whole grapefruits to the brew.

Hi, no, but what you can do is control this with the right pour. Angle it so you get fizzing and a head (more than how a pub pours), so it won’t end up doing the same in your belly. Interestingly some Czechs pour their beer with no tilt, waiting for the huge head to subside before pouring again.

'Plonk' it is not, trust me. Absolutely beautiful, served chilled as an aperitif... I've paid ten times that amount for French stuff that hasn't been anywhere near as good!! Pity you can't get it here in Lidl.

Batch 59 is 60.9% and still has the old kick of course but it has lost something in complexity.
You don't quite get that array of chocolate, raisins, caramel and orange notes that earlier batches had.
The alcoholic burn is more overwhelming now. Hope they get it back on track in the future.

glenmorangie lasanta, the balvenie single barrel 15, tamdhu batch strength and Tullybardine 228 although this is a burgandy cask, its lovely. Those are the ones Ive tried that I liked.

Bought a bottle of Ardbeg Corryvreckan about three weeks ago and have just got around to opening it. Absolutely stunning. Well worth the expense.
Looks nice, Shaun! Could you describe the flavour? I might be interested in getting a bottle myself. I like something nice and smooth (such as most sherry cask whiskies), and not too peaty or smoky :)

Yes, exactly. I'm more of a Balvenie kind of guy. I bought a bottle of Lagavullin, which is nice, but a little too smoky for my tastes. I like a nice rich, smooth whisky, with a touch of sherry-like sweetness, which slips down nicely - and those ones are usually a deep amber colour :)

The Dutch whisky gets good reviews over at the Whisky Exchange too.

It's probably because I'm not a serious whisky drinker. I'm a wine drinker, who also likes good quality (medium dry) sherry, which the Spanish drink a lot with tapas, so that sherry-like flavour, in whisky, appeals much more. And in general, I prefer smooth/rich tasting alcoholic drinks, which are a little bit sweet, to anything bone dry.
For example, I detest gin, vodka, grappa, Sambuca (hate aniseed, too) - or really any form of white liquor. The exception is the odd Barcardi and coke, but not had that for years. That's also reflected in my tastes in wine, as I'm mostly a red drinker, and much prefer a lovely full-bodied Barolo, to something sharper and more acidic, such as, say, Beaujolais :)

I have a bottle of Taiwanese malt sitting at home at the moment, Kavalan Solist sherry cask, it's rather good ... mine is unopened was given to me as a gift on leaving Taiwan last time, but I had a night on the stuff a few days previously. Tastes remarkably like a good Speyside I have to say. I've had quite a few of the high-end Suntory whiskys as well - not to be sneezed at.

I am not adverse to Speyside whisky, but it has to be good.
I have also tried the Hibiki 17 year old which is supposed to be very good, and for the price I felt it was not great.
I was shocked the other day when I made an inventory of my cupboard to see that I currently have 35 different bottles in my "collection".

Tullibardine 500 Sherry Cask is like drinking creme brulee ...
I enjoyed it but not really strong enough on the sherry finish for my preferences.
That is why the Dutch whisky could be good.
It spends more than the usual 12 months in the sherry casks.

I've not tried it - I think at that price I would prefer a full sherry maturation and not sherry 'finished' ...

Well Marco, initially it is thick, gloopy and creamy to taste. Extremely piney but as peaty as the fires of hell. Lots of kind of fruit cake flavours. Very Christmassy. One of the best I have ever bought.

For me, those Speyside whiskies are nothing short of that bloody Irish rubbish with the exception of Connemara of course.
Well Marco, initially it is thick, gloopy and creamy to taste. Extremely piney but as peaty as the fires of hell. Lots of kind of fruit cake flavours. Very Christmassy. One of the best I have ever bought.
As long as you're enjoying it mate, that's the important thing. We all have different palates. Like I said, I'm far from a 'proper' whisky drinker. I just know what I like :)

Elvis Juice. A punchy American style IPA infused with grapefruit. From what I can tell whole grapefruits are chopped into the brew pith and all. Best served ice cold.
If you don’t like hoppy ale then forget about it. [emoji14]

decent whisky Julian. I quite like it. The port version(quina ruban) is a nice version although a bit more ported than lasanta is sherried. Usually dearer too. Not a guzzler or quaffer whisky but a nice dram

I have contributed to this thread before, and probably will do so again.
Over the summer in the States I had some beer with enticing names - such as Moose Drool. Wasn't as good as Old Engine Oil though.
In the meantime, i've noticed that if I don't drink so much - don't expect to have a drink every day - that my weight has gone down a bit, and my BMI has improved. I no longer automatically keep up with my friends who drink wine with meals when we go out - just to be sociable. Trying to tell them that cutting back on G&Ts each night, plus wine with every meal does seem like hard work though. Some people - even supposedly clever ones - just ignore the evidence.
I should also do more exercise, but I've not got round to that yet.
My recommendation for the day is to cut back and stay healthy - but enjoy drinking when it seems appropriate.

We're rather fond of Beaujolais Nouveau, especially the superior Villages version, and the 2017 crop apparently has been rather good, so we picked up a case today from Majestic:

Enjoying the Beaujolais Nouveau now, with some noisettes of lamb in a rich rosemary and red wine jus, with Lyonnaise potatoes and broad beans à la Grecque (having a rather late dinner this evening, as we've been busy putting up the tree and decorating the house for Xmas, in readiness for friends visiting).
This year's Nouveau is certainly weightier, and with richer tasting berry fruits, which titillate the palate and produce a flavour that lingers longer than that of some of the thinner, more acidic BN's of previous vintages.
Jean Loron has certainly surpassed normal standards by producing a young wine with bags of bright, jammy fruit flavours, and enough 'zing' and structure to make it a perfect accompaniment with a variety of meat dishes.

I don't drink much wine these days but this 2009 Pouilly Fuisse we had over Xmas was quite exceptional.
This golden nectar is a million miles away from most Chardonnays, being extremely refined, subtle and elegant.
It was from Waitrose but sadly only a much more recent vintage available now.

Very nice, Julian - one of my favourite whites, along with Pulingny Montrachet. If you haven't tried that, I thoroughly recommend it. It's a stunning white burgundy! :)
Snapper, Del and I are currently enjoying a nice pre-dinner cocktail, called a 'Sorrento Sparkle', which consists of ice-cold Limoncello liqueur, ice-cold Prosecco and frozen lemon sorbet, into which is added some fresh lime:

I've gone off Ozzie Shiraz, simply because the taste of vanilla (from the oak barrels used) was simply too overpowering, and because new world reds like that tend to lack subtlety and finesse, in comparison with an old world 'big red', such as Amarone or Chateauneuf du Pape, which are generally more to my taste :)

Had a bottle of this fantastic Argentinian red last night with some steak. In my opinion, Argentina produces the finest wines of the 'New World' countries, using its excellent quality of soil and warm climate to make some of the best red wine you can drink, and this one is no exception!
It's a pure Cabernet Sauvingnon, so very densely-coloured, almost purple, in the glass - and a real big, jammy rich mouthful, packed full of fruit, silky smooth, and not overly oaked. Unlike some Australian varieties are. In fact, in comparison, this wine has much more structure and finesse.
It comes in at £9.99, but such is the quality on offer here that you could easily pay £20 or more for similar, in a specialist wine merchant. It's a great glug, superb with barbecues, and comes highly recommended. So get along to your nearest Aldi, whilst stocks last! :cheers:

I've been buying a few slurps from Virgin Wines recently, whose service I have to say is almost second to none, and the quality of their selections really are top notch [trust me, I'm very fussy!]
Anyway, I discovered this *truly superb* red wine, from Chile, which is the perfect accompaniment to all red meats, particularly barbecued steaks, and also mature cheeses. Honestly, read the description and reviews on the link below - you'll simply NOT find a richer or smoother tasting, silky-smooth mouthful of fruity alcoholic succulence!! :eyebrows:
Highly recommended, to the point that if you're a 'big red' wine lover, like me, you'd be CRAZY to deprive yourself of this.....

Waitrose have a Romanian Pinot Noir for £5.99 - it's absolutely delicious & superb value at this price.
Lovely soft texture. Better than many entry-level New Zealand pinots ... I will be buying more for sure!

Currently reverted to being a lager lout -kronenbourg - as the giving up drinking didn't seem to be working. Just no wine now!
Previously i was mostly drinking Italian Rose at 1.75€ plus tva for 2 Litres.
Pretty much any decent bordeaux from 1995 or 2000 should be good for special occasions - my faves -Pomerol, Lallande de Pomerol amd Fronsac.
For a good white try Chateau haut Smith -no really - it's the chateau that oz clark? and that geezer off topgeer stopped at in france and did the Spa thingy.
Dunno what you'll pay in the UK tho'.

What a lovely drop this is. So smooth and rich, no hint of harshness, or that smoky/peaty quality I'm not a big fan of. Sherry casks rule!

LOL I did the same, save it was a single bottle of a 2007 Château Capbern Gasqueton, Saint-Estèphe. This was the last of a case I bought back in 2009, which I thought I had drunk up. Goodness knows how it got away - but not anymore; though it did need drinking up.
Nah, clarets like that can keep for years. I doubt it'd have been at its peak yet!

You should, mate. I've got a nice little collection now of around six, one of which (a Lagavulin 16) is in a vintage crystal decanter. Looks rather nice sat on the Welsh dresser, with some accompanying whisky glasses:)

Maybe Grant, or one of the other guys up in Scotland will know better (as I'm a bit out of touch these days), but I don't think you'll find any distilleries in the middle of Glasgow or Edinburgh, such is the nature of their operation, but I could be wrong.
The Glengoyne one is only just outside (north) of Glasgow. You could probably get a train there from the city centre, or even a taxi for not that much, if you're sharing the costs. It would be worth it, as Glengoyne is expertly set up for tours, and so I'm sure you'd all really enjoy yourselves!:cool:

Good one! Thanks guys. Looks like Glengoyne is the one to go to. Per their website, there's a bus from Glasgow that stops at the front gate - perfect! The Highland Way is near there too, so perhaps a hike and distillery visit to follow would be just the thing. Rabbies tours look good, also....a few options for them.
I've passed this on to the ladies and they will doubtless do something fun.

You lot have got me thinking about the evenings drawing in and how nice it is to just enjoy the simple pleasures of a nice warming tipple while listening.
I’ve always been partial to a drop of Whisky but I’m not a serious taster. Of those I have tried, I would have to say my tastes veer away from the smoky and peaty and more towards the Sherry Cask.
To that end, on the basis of recent discussions on here, I recently tried the Glengoyne 18 and was sufficiently taken by it to warrant further in-depth investigation [emoji4]

I was interested in the general consensus of what the best pleated whisky is. It does not have to be an Islay though....
By the way, I have Port Askaig, Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabain, Kilchoman and Laphroaig in my Islay collection. ;) (Apologies if I have spelt any of them wrong).
Lagavulin 12 Year Old is probably the best reasonably priced...ie under a mortgage.. different editions cost more than others. i might add, smokey's need a very small splash of water in them to release..

I'm not really into 'blonde' looking whiskies, as in my experience they tend to be thinner and sharper/zestier in flavour, which is not what I'm after in a malt whisky; I like something rich, lush and smooth, with a caramel/sherry-like consistency, which coats your mouth with a velvety warmth!:)

Like you say, it's a case of 'suck it and see', but personally I've not yet found any malt whisky that doesn't benefit from the addition of a *teardrop* of water. It's important, however, that it's literally no more than that!

yup, room temp(18/19c), or slightly below for me, but with bourbon i like it a bit closer to body temp. maybe 24/25c.

I find Glenmorangie a little too 'fiery', for my tastes. I prefer something smoother, with less tendency to 'burn'. Aberlour 10 is good, in that respect, as it's lovely and smooth. I'm loving the Corry; it's nicer than the Uggy and I absolutely loved that!
The Kelpie will be my next treat I think...
For every invoice I submit to a client, I'm treating myself to a new bottle (within reason); but the Kelpie will be a treat, something to spend my birthday £££ on from back in August
One bottle I still have is an Edradour Chateauneuf du Cape cask; bought it on our honeymoon back in Dec 2010 and you cant buy it any more; I bought 2 of each of the 4 cask bottles back then; hopefully they'll grow in value :D

Indeed, but the general idea is to finish one off first, then open and enjoy the next one, and so forth...;)
It's not the temp that's the issue, but once you let air into the bottle.

There is air let into the casks during the ageing process.
I don't have a problem with any of them tasting "off". Personally, I enjoy the differences between the whisky, and would find it rather boring to stick to one bottle at a time.

Talking of which, today was really a shit day - literally. I have been suffering with slow drainage from the shower, most noticeable when we have visitors with more traffic in the bathroom, and one of the toilets, which was causing air escaping back up through a toilet. The other bathroom and toilets drain fine, so it had to be a blockage. Out came the 30m long drain jetter and pressure washer. After an hour of sticking my head in the opening of a sceptic tank, we have a result.... The drain is clear. Then the Mrs goes out on a routine shop, and she loses all drive on the car. No warnings, just a clunk and the car refuses to move under it's own power. It starts fine, and you can still select the gears, so it is likely to be a collapsed clutch plate, or the dual mass flywheel giving up the ghost, and the two sections are now independent. Add to that all of the other crappy little jobs, and I feel that I have earned myself a wee dram in way of recompense.
You can scratch the 1998 Gordon and Macphail Caol Ila off the list. I am finishing it right now….
And how lovely it is too!

Well I'm still rotten with this fecking head-cold and I've drained my Ardbeg Corry; so having to make do with JW Blue Label of all things :lol: and Glenfiddich Experimental Project XX, which I have to say, for a normal whisky (ie chill-filtered and coloured); is very bloody suppable :D
Need to buy a few more bottles in; the Blue Label won't be supped dry, yet. It's still being treated as a special bottle, as is the Edradour Ballechin Burgandy cask bottle too ;)
Need a few 'ever day' suppers in; need to have a root on Amazon to see what takes my fancy!

Re the Aberlour; I’m not a fan tbh, just find it a bit meh, a bit only ok. Would rather go for an Auchentoshen at that price. However, the A’Bundah is a very nice drop, but screaming up in price currently :scratch:

The basic auchentoshan is pretty good. A bit tough at edges but really hits the spot. I could drink a lot of it at a sitting

Singleton is quite good.
IMO the best one they do is The Glen Ord; but it’s hard to come across unless you buy it from the distillery shop!
Tried another of theirs and it was good. Forgot the name now. Great bottle too. Fits nicely in hand

Cheers; had them both. Balvenie is my favourite Speyside; their Portwood is stunning, but at c£120 a bottle, it’s a once a year treat etc
The Dalwhinnie I can take or leave; just doesn’t do it for me

Plus, if you've got lots of mountains and pure water, containing the right minerals, you've got a fighting chance of making good whisky, which is why the Scots, Irish and Welsh get it right;)

It was a choice between this and the Lasanta at £40 (also on offer) but I fancied something lighter in contrast to the Glengoyne 18 for a change so I went for the frugal but adventurous option.

I don’t really have anywhere to store that many bottles currently, so probably only have a have a few in the house at any one time. As you say it’s for drinking not for looking at.
I think it has got to be the Balblair, Glenmorangie and Dalmore.
It is a shame it is not a 16 YO Jura, but hey...
As for the "international" whiskys, it is a shame I don't know more about them.
Tullybardine burgundy is excellent too. Ive had several bottles of that in past
There is a lot of good whisky there.
I am limiting myself to what I buy. I get some vouchers from the cooperative at work as a Christmas present, so I am trying to keep within the limit of the vouchers.
I need to build up my stock before Brexit happens...

I read that this 17 was something special and given that I loved the 12, I thought I’d better give it a go before it disappears completely.
I wont embarrass my newbie-self trying to describe its characteristics, you can Google them easily enough.
All I will say is “boy, oh boy, I love this one!”
Found myself cradling this one for as long as I could, it gives as much pleasure to the nose as it does to the taste and just keeps getting better and better.
Love it so much I’ve had to order another to ensure I have a Christmas treat. [emoji4]

Looks interesting, Tony. Is it peaty - smooth or fiery? What type of casks was it distilled in? If it's too peaty, it unfortunately won't be my thing. If you could describe the taste, that would be useful:)

Not peaty at all. Bourbon & oloroso casks I believe.

Quite fruity, peaches and kiwi according to the distillery but also butterscotch and vanilla in there.
Taste just develops in the glass, teaspoon of water and about 10 minutes sitting really brings out the flavours.

Just a heads up for red wine lovers... Just enjoyed this with tonight's dinner (some grilled lamb cutlets), and it's without doubt the nicest Greek red wine I've ever had; in fact is up there with some of the nicest wines I've had, period!

Made from Aghiorghitiko grapes, indigenous to Greece, it however, for all intents and purposes, tastes like a good Médoc, such are the deep, rich earthy flavours it imparts on the palate, but with a hint of spice, juicy blackcurrant and rich damson fruits, exhibiting good 'length' and acidity, which makes it an ideal partner for all red meats and mature cheeses.
Honestly, it's a stonker! Plus, at a round a tenner a bottle, superb value for this type of quality, which had it come from the Bordeaux region of France, would've cost at least twice that amount. Why not treat yourself to some over the festive period!:cheers:

I recently bought the Dalmore Port Wood reserve, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban and the Balblair 2005, first release.
Initial impressions are that the Dalmore is quite smooth, and very drinkable. The Balblair seems to have an okay/vanilla taste to it initially, with a hint of spice towards the end. It’s pretty good. I have yet to open the Glenmorangie.
I also tried a 12 year old Jura over the holidays, and that is another I am thinking of getting. That or the 18 year old....
I think the minimum age of whisky I will buy from now on, is 12 years. Anything younger seems a bit on the firey side, almost untamed.
