Got distracted in Tesco earlier by a bottle of this to try on offer - not really a Whiskey, but a couple of people have recommended it so we shall see...

Yeah, there's a Honey one too, I only went for this as recommended by a couple of people. Will find out later!

The verdict on the JD Apple - if you think of it as a liqueur not whiskey it’s rather pleasant - I won’t be pouring it down the sink, but then I am not sure I will be replacing the bottle once it’s empty!

this is the bourbon casked speyside.. very nice it is too. better than it used to be imo. great value too.

I only add water to stronger whisky (if I find it a bit "harsh" on first tasting), it can open up different flavours, but if overdone just makes the drink bland.
Your post made me look it up, this is quite interesting (although I don't believe the solubility bit - surely insoluble material would make the whisky hazy/fall out of the solution?)

yeah depends on the whisky and strength etc but its all about the ethanol molecule. its odd and one end is hydrascopic(is that the word?)(attracts water)and other hydraphobic.(repels water). anyway ethanol in large concentrations stay away from surface, and block molecules like guaiacol from reaching surface, air and your taste buds get hit with ethanol only. i think ethanol kind of turns and rises attracting the taste molecules to the air and you when the % is dropped.
Summat like that anyway lol..
Whisky that hasnt been chill filtered is usually bottles at 46% and above or it will go hazy if any water is added(you might even find floaters in it lol). Nothing wrong with it, it is just floc, and some flavours too. if you leave some ncf whisky out overnight it might(if not cask strength) go a sort of opaque colour.
Cask strength whiskies need diluting really as the alcohol is going to all be at top og glass pointing the wrong way, so add water until you start tasting whisky and not all ethanol(and dont get prissy if it clouds over.) there is no real right ammount, just what you like, and use bottled water.(you dont want chlorine etc in it)
Ahhh - hadn't really thought of ethanol molecule being polar.
OH end will be hydrophilic (water loving - "H" bonding with water)
CH3 end will be hydrophobic (water hating)
Easiest to think of it being akin to tiny little magnets - oppositely charged ends will stick or clump together (Like how soaps/emulsifiers work, hydrophobic end of molecule sticks to oils etc)

Mackmyra are a Swedish whisky company. you can get their wares online. but probably better with a Scotch malt. Swedes like lightish stuff i believe so maybe Glen Grant. Their cheapest is a 10 yr old, but the 12 is much better but still reasonable at about 40 ish. If you feel richer then their 18 yr old will set you back 120 quid but is super stuff and a nice box too.

Pulled a bottle off my shelf tonight.
It's Hazelburn 10 from the Springbank stable.
This was bought this year, it only comes out occasionally and is sold out immediately.
I have another, older bottle still in stock .
Lightly laced with citrus fruits and honey, this is very creamy. Lovely fresh and gingery mouth and good finish. A bit of wood char but no peat to talk of.
Not many 10yr olds reach this quality.

Lots of dried fruit and spices as expected and a bit of orange on lips and tongue after a splash of water. Not cheap this but its truely superb.
This is another bottle from my collection that im reducing due to my age. Im not leaving it all to heathen relatives:D

Another from my collection opened. Dailuaine 13 Year Old 2007 vintage Speyside single malt Scotch whisky. Matured in hogsheads #303256 #303290 bottled November 2020 by Signatory Vintage for the Un-Chillfiltered series.
A different animal this from the last being Bourbon hogsheads. lots of honey, malted barley and at end a bit of after eight mint. a decent finish, and again likes a little water.

I bought it from Laithwaites a few years ago, for I think, about £15.
The 2018 is unavailable now; I thought it was time to drink it up.
I'm not sure where one can buy more recent vintages, or even if they are any good: the 2018 was an exceptional year.
I have several other clarets in my 'wine cellar' which I'm slowly drinking - I'll post them here in due course.

2018 Château Le Rochers, Réserve Spéciale, Bordeaux

Château Les Rochers doesn’t pretend to be a classed growth, but a simple Bordeaux with all the class and elegance you’d expect of this great region. It’s from an estate owned by the Roux family for five generations. The name Les Rochers, ‘the rocks’, comes from the limestone-rich soil, which keeps the vines very well drained. As you’d expect in the Entre Deux Mers, the majority of the grapes are Merlot, with some of both the Cabernets.
Another wine that is approaching the 'drink up' date (December 2022). 13.5% ABV.
Enjoyed with steak and kidney, black bean and onion sauté on a bed of basmati rice, carrots, green beans and 'sugar snap' peas.
2018 L'Épiphanie. Montagne Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux

Enjoyed with a starter of grated carrot, smoked salmon and avocado salad. Followed by smoked mackerel in a tomato and onion sauce with brocolli, and green beans on a bed of spaghetti.
Desert of honeydew, cantaloupe and galia melon with black grape fruit salad.
Mulben Moor 8 Year Old 2010 from Murray McDavid. 50% abv this and from a Mystery Distillery in Speyside.

Very fresh, flowery and a bit of spicy fruit too, along with honey etc.. a little firey but easily tamed with a splash if thats how you want it. Very decent and will think on distillery; Auchroisk comes to mind. I think the water and tem mins in glass is a big boost for it.

Never had it, and had to use up the balance of my “Christmas Gift” account at work. It was one of the better bottles they had left.

amorik seems popular but not tried it. they do a sherried one for decent money so might try it sometime; just to say i have. i had a belgian whisky which was drinkable but for price it was poor fare. Goldlys 12, oloroso.. didnt taste very sherried and had an odd tang and aftertaste. still at least ive tried it lol

Another off my shelf today.
Signatory left these two casks for 13 yes then bottled up. This Glenlossie is unchillfiltered and 46%.
This is very nice with orange, nuts and blackcurrant a good bit of punch too.
Don't see many from Glenlossie alas but this doesn't disappoint.
Sat on shelf for about 2 yrs but it's well worth the wait.

2007 Château Capbern Gasqueton, Saint-Estèphe.

I had bought a case of this way back in 2007, but this bottle was hiding away in my 'cellar'. Definitely past its prime - still drinkable, but had lost a fair bit of its character. Still it reminded me to buy a case of the 2019.

Château Fontaine de l’Aubier is located in the heart of the Médoc, neighbouring some of the greatest classed growth châteaux, and perched on the famous gravel soils that suit Cabernet and Merlot grapes so well. Five generations of the Fauchey family have succeeded each other at the château, always with the same approach to the task of making wine, starting with the greatest care in the vineyards, weeding and pruning by hand to avoid soil erosion, and adding absolutely nothing in the winery. Such fastidiousness pays off in quality. Top American wine critic James Suckling has awarded this wine an impressive 92–93 points for its silky tannins and flavourful finish.

Scallywag, from Douglas Laing is a vatted malt made from Speyside whiskies, including Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes. Many of the whiskies used in the small batch release come from Spanish sherry butts, giving Scallywag a fab sweetness that's balanced by some "mischievous" bourbon cask whisky also in the blend.
A lot of sweetness breaks into nutty corn flakes with vanilla and cream. lots of spice as it goes over to a nice sherried finish, but still leaving that sweetness in mouth.
incredibly adictive once mouth gets used to it.

A bottle of Glenallachie 8yr old. Lots of rich dark fruits in this along with spices etc. Still young and vibrant but obviously a little bit of an edge still. The nose is good, with sherried fruit and a touch of putty; the finish is strong.

me too when in mood; especially rye these days, but not been for some time. ive a few open ones still and a good few unopened.
A bottle of Glenallachie 8yr old. Lots of rich dark fruits in this along with spices etc. Still young and vibrant but obviously a little bit of an edge still. The nose is good, with sherried fruit and a touch of putty; the finish is strong.

Was concerned about the fragile state and integrity of the cork (in fact the importers state that the cork must be removed with a 2-prong wine opener).
I didn't have such an opener, so gambled on using my trusty lever corkscrew

sounds delish barry. although 33 notes is a lot for a bottle of wine, its not a lot for a real good un.

Christophe Reboul Salze is a big name in Bordeaux. Born in central France, he fell in love with the region's wines in his youth. Arriving in Bordeaux in 1980, he decided to make his passion a career. He gained a decade's experience trading in Grand Cru Classé wines and became director at one of the leading houses. Then started his own négociant business, which remains today a leader in the field. However, he wanted to make wine too, so he purchased three estates in the Right Bank's Premières Côtes de Blaye and the results have been exceptional. This superb claret uses a cuvée from his properties, Châteaux Les Grands Marechaux, Gigault and Belle Coline.

powerful stuff and for me at least can take a fair bit of o2.. toffee on nose with alcohol too without water... cherries and sultanas in mouth and a longish, fairly dry finish.
for price, its pretty decent.

Kingsbarns Balcomie... young and fruity with a fair bit of spice, but not overpowering and stays smooth enough for a pretty young dram.. not sure age but maybe not much over the 3 years. A little thin for my taste tho..

Tasting notes:
Ripe, rounded, velvety red fruits with good depth and length.
Aroma:
Pretty redcurrant and floral notes with a hint of cigar box.
Perhaps it’s the château’s location near St-Emilion that makes this claret so special. Or the know-how of owner Bruno Dellac. Or the quality of another great vintage. What’s beyond doubt is the wine’s sheer class, earthy richness and ripe fruit.
Bruno Dellac’s wines are no stranger to Gold medals, winning them for most vintages since 2010. His family estate lies in Castillon, on the Right Bank, near Saint-Emilion and the Côtes de Francs. Vines planted 30 years ago are now producing grapes of superb intensity, especially thanks to the cool calcaire soils (the same as you’ll find in much of Saint-Emilion). Good drainage makes vines struggle to find nutrients and the result is more mineral complexity and flavour in the Merlot-rich wine. And such is Bruno’s dedication to perfection that since 2010 he has turned over his vineyards to organic viticulture, now with certification. Silky red fruit with structure and freshness – open early to let it open out.

Very popular on the various online whisky sites, I don’t have a great sense of smell but wife does but doesn’t drink whisky, she thought there was a touch of freshly cut grass on the nose, i rely on my taste buds , I either like it or don’t , not a sherry bomb like the Glenallachie.

Yeah nice case, wont be opened tonight, as its quite a pricey whisky, but if its a good result something will opened.

barley and breakfast orange spread on nose, while in mouth its dry oak, and a touch salty moving into the usual vavilla and caramel with more oak.
nicely balanced i think overall although the saltiness maybe lingers a little; maybe due to age. the 18 is more rounded and less salty. great value tho

Some of the whisky prices have gone through the roof, apart from the supermarket bottles where you can sometimes find something. I have a top price which I wont go over which means a lot of brands are now out of reach
another product from the usually excellent Deanston range ; Deanston Virgin Oak is made with young whisky which has been finished in brand new oak casks from Kentucky.

creamy toffee in this ; vanilla too and lots of oaky spices, especially in the finish which is long but controlled. rather good for a nas. a little O2 tames the finish a bit if you prefer without affecting the dram much. a winner for £35

yup pretty decent. i think the 12 is marginally better. considering price you can get it for at times the 18 is a stone cold bargin.

I finished my Yamazaki 12 today.
I almost choked when I saw how much they want for a bottle now. €175!
I can get two very good bottles for that. Especially as I did not find the Yamazaki to be anything special.

Well, it has gone.
Another one that will go on the “will be missed” list.
It was absolutely lovely.
Full and malty with a big whack of gripping sherry notes, apple peels and baked pear with nectarine sultanas and burnt sugar.
You lot make me drool with your selection of whisky, compared to what’s available in Australia.

ive a bottle of the 8 yr old in today. its 8 quid cheaper and quite good too. not quite as smooth tho. will open box tomorrow maybe lol. should be some more of the glen scotia too as it was on offer

Not tried the 8 year old yet, been trying to improve my malt whisky knowledge over the last few months, mainly through you tube videos and a few other places. some of the prices are becoming eye watering so alway trying to find the best value for money.
horst luning had a channel on the utube. he is pretty knowlegeable, and been att it for years. a bit tutonic at times but worth getting his opinions .. ive been drinking malt since i was 18. even worked in a few distilleries.
Whisky is a simple thing, but is often complicated by some. The blender has the hard job; we get the simple one:lol:

yup, breakshite was sooo smart:doh: lots of issues with eu myself but that was stupid. plenty other good companies too.. whisky world, whisky exchange and house of malt plus tyndrum whisky too
