the 12 is ok, nowt special.. the 16 is very nice, although around same price range i'd go for the glenallachie 15.... its bloody nice and more sherry than aberfeldy.

I just found out Fettercarin is a Whyte & Mcackay product , same a Jura and the Dalmore .
Not a name very well known in the U.S.
It is indeed. One if the oldest too and AFAIK the only one to use irrigator rings on the still neck. This cools the column and causes the spirit to be lighter and purer.
Can't do this tonight, it's just not the night for for a whiskey best paired with a Limburger cheese and onion on burnt rye sandwich.

Never tried those, I don't drink spirits. But if the smokiness is as bad as that synthetic 'smoked' flavouring used on foods like fish for instance, it'll be revolting.

A darn nice drink , I love the Tomataian 12 ,got a bottle going here too.
Got another darn nice bottle at Costco today, I have a friend who drinks Cognac XO and stopped paying way north of $130.00 to $200.00 dollars for special bottles for this $45.00 bottle .
If you have a Costco run get a bottle it is really good.
No shortage of fruit, dark chocolate, honey, nuts vanilla,( it actually tastes like the tasting notes).
It is far better than the price would suggest.
Barrel age 12 to 21 years.
If you have access to a bottle run ,get it,enjoy it. Very long finish, love you long time! bottle.
Got a nice colour Jeff, as does this A'bunadh from Aberlour.. Their sherry monster.

Each batch of this whisky is blended from barrels ranging from 5 to 25 years old. The distillery cite the story during distillery tours that when the second pair of stills were put in during 1975, a time capsule was discovered behind the name plate, containing an 1898 newspaper about the distillery fire wrapped around an 1898 bottle of Aberlour. The workmen who discovered the bottle polished off four fifths of the bottle during their lunch break, but the remains of the bottle went off to the laboratories in Keith, Moray, and were analysed. A'bunadh is an attempt to recreate this single malt.

Hellyers Road Pinot Noir Cask Finish, 46.2%...nas with 6 months in pinot noir casks to finish this..
Lots of fruit, pineapple, grapes, bananas and strawberries. Plenty spices too... Strong nose and an oily mouthfeel.. i put a half teaspoon of water to a largish glass:eyebrows:

deanston's 18 yr old.. this is fabulous stuff.. one you all should have in your rotation.. nectar
Well, I kept picking up this bottle of Dalmore 12 and putting it back for something else.
I just don't like their use of excessive caramel coloring,chill filtering and low 40% ABV. this just doesn't reflect top quality in my mind.
I saw this gift pack included 2 nice copita glasses so at $65.00 it came home with me.
It is a really good tasting 12 year old scotch, I like it. It is not as tame as some 12 year old bottles I've had so 40% makes sense for this bottle.
A drop of water and a good swirl around the glass is strongly recommended.
I love the glasses and the whiskey is good too.
Yeah they use e150a AFAIK, which is only one allowed here. It's tasteless tho. Chill filtering is usual under 46.3%.
I'm not knocking Dalmore 12 ,it dose taste a little young but it is good.
The 12 gives me some inclination of what this could be if left to mature awhile longer,at 15 to 18 years old it would be very good,and at 50 % non chill filtered it would be something spectacular.
I like your ginger jar toppers on your copita glasses Grant. I may one day try there older offerings.
Amazon do the glencairn copita and lid on UK site and deliver to USA. Might also be on your site or you could import. I import american site stuff sometimes.

A lovely creamy dram this. I first tried it at a distillery tasting years ago and was impressed, along with the 21 and 25 which is nectar.
Anyway this has to me, honey, cream a little smooth spices, maybe caramel, vanilla etc and a little lemon too.
incredibly smooth and finish is longish but milder than most. for this money i'd say the tomatin 18 is better.

The bottle I have tastes more like orange peel and is not very sweet , it is well balanced with bitter dark chocolate ,cinnamon and just a hint of clove.
It is far from a sherry bomb.

My review went like this..
Deanston have a lot of good uns, this is the best.
One of the great non sherried whiskies, filled with honey, vanilla and butter shortbread. Great price for a top quality whisky. Nice oily mouthfeel and medium finish leaving you wanting more.

The nose is traditional GG...In mouth are honey, burning sugar, cinnamon, followed by marzipan and GG's trademark waxy, floral taste. A nice warming and longish finish. Very nic stuff and difficult to believe its a nas.
This is an "Old Style" whisky profile.. no big slap in face, just quality whisky. well done GG

followed it up with the deanston as they have similarities both in profile and price.. the deanston isnt so upfront and has less fruit, not having been in sherry, but the 18yr old is imo better/smoother, but the GG is perhaps more complex. i wouldnt fling either out of bed :D

Linkwood is God's distillery hence very little appears on market.

At the risk of lowering the standard, I'm enjoying a slug or two of Spey Cascade 'The Singleton'.
Not at all... My usual is Laphroaig, but whenever I happen across a singleton I do find it eminently quaffable. I might lower the tone with this Highland Park, which was on offer at Tesco... Surprisingly nice, if a little pointy around the edges.

By the way, I'm firmly of the opinion (reinforced by some expert whiskey drinking training I once took part in) that a splash of cool water in your whiskey is the correct way to drink most whiskeys... Or straight, never ice unless it's' throat burn'.

one of my top 5 bourbon heavy malts.. a touch of fresh burnt cask in this that you only taste after a really fruity malt.. almost tastes like smoke. very rich this.

I took a punt on this Austrian ‘Gruner Veltliner' tonight for around a tenner and am absolutely blown away by its quality.
The fruit is deliciously ripe and rich, somewhere inbetween Sauv Blanc and Viognier territory but it has an earthy, chalky steeliness and a bit of pepper on the finish.
I will definitely be back for more!

Dalmore Port Wood Reserve.
46.5% no colouring. matured in American white oak and finished in Tawny port tubes.
Caramel and sweet stewed fruits. Quite creamy. A bit of orange too. A slight dry finish.
Quite powerful so water may assist. Nice tho

edit, yes a half teaspoon is helpful in opening up and smoothing edges. a nice drop.

I can see why.
I picked up another two bottles tonight - it's just too good.
Also got a 2016 Argentinian Pinot Noir for Xmas Day - no idea how good it is but it intrigued me.
I got this bottle for $90.00 today, regular price was $150.00.
Grant, who is Alexander Murray ? It is all 18 year old single malt from the Dalmore Distillery.
So it's all White and Mackay right?
Some of those bottles look rather low in the neck, is that just the way they were filled or evaporation?
They where all filled to the same level.

Dalmore really adds the artificial color to there 12 ,
This 18 is awesome, very creamy, new premium kip leather baseball glove, dark chocolate, tangerine, peaches,apricot,touch of mint ,rich vanilla&oak for a very long Finnish.
I really like this a lot. This is what Dalmore should be selling, no color added , just great tasting.
The cabinet has bottles hanging over the edge, the shelf is slightly bowed, I have bottles packed in, I need to drink more or buy less.
I wonder what a 21 year old Dalmore would taste like?
Amc are a independent bottling company. Do a lot of nice stuff. 21yr old longmorn is a cracker.
Than one will be nice too. Looks like a mix of bourbon and sherry casks.

If you really like it pick up a 2nd bottle , it's hard to find something I really like on sale.
As long as I like the flavor profile, a young "here I am ", doesn't put me off. In fact it wakes the pallet !
This is even part of the magic of Irish whiskey, it has vibrancy of flavor.
You may like the Dalmore 12 orange zest,dark chocolate and Cinnamon are well put together in just the right amounts of each.
After reading a lot of criticism of Dalmore I decided to give them a try when I saw a Christmas gift pack offering 2 very nice Copita glasses. Worth nearly the price of the bottle.
I picked up the Dalmore 12 and sat it back down at least 3 or 4 times but the glasses sealed the deal. In the end the whiskey it's self was worth the price.
Richard Patterson pushing it as a premium brand at 40% with caramel color added upsets a lot of single malt purists.
After tasting for myself , it's a very,very good 12 year old that lacks nothing for it's age,in fact it tastes older than 12 years. My guess is the rick house is probably heated just enough to get that lovely chocolate from the bourbon casks. Would it be better at 43 to 46% yep but It stands up well at 40. It was a good lesson for me. Ignore both hype and criticism and decide for your self.
I am quite keen on the Dalmore. I have a Portwood reserve and a King Alexander. All good stuff.

It is mostly their marketing that both makes them and breaks them.
For example their cigar malt, any good malt is a cigar malt, they claim to be exclusive in being able to use a deer head in there branding. Better tell Glen Fiddich, right?
There is a famous audio Brand that markets this way. It sucks some people in and pushes others away.
In spite of there marketing, at the end of the day ,you get what you pay for with Dalmore and that is what matters to me.

As its Xmas time, i'm opening this lovely Glenkinchie distillers edition. This is finished in an Amontillado Cask.
MoM say...
Nose: Hazelnut spread, rye bread and runny honey.
Palate: Grassy barley and lemongrass notes shine out from underneath old brandy, sugared almond and festive spice notes.
Finish: Walnut and coffee cake, soft apricot and honeydew melon.
and they are not far off.. very smooth for a 12 yr old this, and maybe it should be as its not cheap, currently costing about £65.

I have been sipping this.... Very Christmasy .
This is the best rum I have ever had, not sickening sweet , but not super dry either .
The molasses is way,way in the back ground . It is very fruity ,dark chocolate,banana ,figs and hazel nuts.
Nice mouth feel , with molasses cookie in the back ground the whole time.
Gets a good write up that one. £35 over here, so quite affordable too. Lots of almonds

Grant you're missing out on a rare treat, after sampling each i must say that if you like a sherry finish to your whisky which i do, then these are right up your street, they are both a bit sweeter than a single malt and the added sweetness brings out the complexity of flavours.
Before trying these 2 my exposure to rum had been, OVD, Capt Morgan and Navy rum and the only one of the three i could stand was Capt Morgans and then only in small quantities, but these are on another level, refined and mellow, not for mixing with coke or blackcurrant.
Think i'll watch Pirates of the Caribbean this afternoon, Arrrrgh!!

Rum is not something I want every day,same goes for Cognac or an Islay.
It just keeps things interesting.
For most people around me in Kalifornia wine and beer are a big deal and whiskey not so much.
It is fun to give some one an amazing glass of good scotch or Irish whiskey and their next visit a Laphroag 10.
Reactions may differ,but the look of shock remains a constant !

Stay away from islay(in general).. most others are mostly not, but some are.. check with master of malt for their rightups etc. you wont go too far wrong. Its rare for speysiders but there are some .. Highland has some.. the demarkation from highland and speyside isnt clear geographically tho.
Try powers john's lane if your into irish. its rather good
Another opening.. Wolfburn Langskip.
This comes out at 58% and fairly young.. Maybe 5 Yr old. Fruits, nuts, ginger, nutmeg, pepper and a shake of brown sugar.. Maybe Toffee too. Its fairly warm and longlasting finish is aided by a teaspoon of water.

I'm now drinking a whiskey from Dufftown and it doesn't taste of Marmite at all! Marmalade and aniseed notes, but not Marmite. Must be a duff bottle from Dufftown.
I'm now drinking a whiskey from Dufftown and it doesn't taste of Marmite at all! Marmalade and aniseed notes, but not Marmite. Must be a duff bottle from Dufftown.Lots of distilleries in Dufftown [emoji23]. It has the most and us said to make more for treasury in taxes than any other place.

What dose your experience tell you Grant?That a tough one to answer as some of the wood used is exotic. They used their connections with Gonzalez Byass to draw from rare and valuable sherry casks. They were 30yrs old and you can taste all those fruits. Bloody marvellous stuff. Also good white oak giving some rich tannins in this..
Whiskies I am betting will be about 6 up to about 20 I think
This was my New years , I had a good 6 different bottles going into my blood.
I had a nice pour from all these and slept like a baby . For me it was a very happy start of 2021.
All whiskey buying is on hold as the truck needs a new transmission , I have both towed and hauled with it and hope it will go another 2,000 miles to 80,000 before crapping out completely.
The new one will be over built to last longer, the factory 4L60 was never meant to be for a truck . At least there have been after market parts made to tuffen it up.
After I get that covered I'll pick up another bottle of Dalmore . I like there flavor profiles.

I've waited long enough to try this Ltd edition 16yr old from Fettercairn, and it doesn't disappoint.
Lots of berries up front teases the palate which is backed up with a traditional bourbon wood base and some delightful sherried raisins.
Cocoa and home baking there too.
Not a long finish but it's a nice controlled one.
This was made using what's called chocolate malted barley. Not many whiskies have used this but glenfiddich was one who did.
Doubt you'll find any of this years, but I think this will be made again somehow, so grab a bottle.
Nice bottle too.

That is a power house 61% is pretty high for scotch, thats a Bourbon number!
This is an odd dram.
Belgium single malt NAS ,
It has a huge amount of Bourbon influence and a Jamaican Rum like funk ,Vanilla, Toffee and pecans .
More like a dry Rum or sweet Bourbon. My palate is confused, it changes from sip to sip. Needed a few drops of water.
only had one belgian malt, and it was a 12 yr old. it was ok, but not on my buy again. your one sounds interesting tho with the beer finish

Well it's whisky time. Had a stumble so topping up painkillers with this cracker from the 3 Drinkers. Their 17yr old min blended Scotch malt. Just a tickle of smoke in this but it's super. Pity it was only a limited as it would I'm sure sell very well.

It's not outstanding but can be had at a good price on occasion. I paid £23 each for 2 bottles a while ago. It's better than that although not in redbreast territory

The end of this excellent whisky... Ive another bottle winging its way to me. This is the way whisky should be made. one of my favs, and a fabulous distillery.
trying this Gelstons Port finish.. 12 yr old and imv needs a bit of water. after water it opens up a nice finish on back of tongue of blackcurrents. medium finish and a jolly drink./ its right price of near £80 is a farce and the £40 i paid is about right.

Berry Bros. & Rudd Sherry Cask Matured - The Classic Range. It opens with concentrated oj and dried fruits, then in mouth, which has quite a nice feel, there are blackcurrent and marmalade. good spicy/oaky finish. slighty harsh, but for this price totally acceptable. An undoubted and unashamed sherry bomb.. For under £30 it has to collect 5 stars at least.

We have just a few drops left in a bottle of sherry - delicious stuff it is/was. I thought it was a cheappie - it might have been.
Perhaps it was bought to put in recipes, rather than to drink.

I have, and still have a bit left. my review-ette.. rather nice this
Caramel and sweet stewed fruits. Quite creamy. A bit of orange too. A slight dry finish.
Quite powerful so half teaspoon of water assists in rounding edges and opening up.

Compass Box Great King Street - Artist's Blend.... nose is sweet apple and other fruit. first tast is dry, watery and not very interesting. second sip is much better; creamy lemon merangue pie. quite a lot richer.. amazing the difference. finish is medium, and gently spiced with a bit of droed fruity christmas cake; just a bit tho.
overall, i think i like this; and i wasnt going to say that after first taste... in fact its very drinkable.:)

Well, I figured that would do but I felt duty bound to try it first and it’s absolutely delicious. Subtle but solid flavours, not too strong and smoother than a cashmere codpiece. Even better, I figured that as it came from Norway I would struggle to find more over here but, no - £21 from Amazon!

Black Bull 12. This is a blend with lots of malt proportions and from the great Duncan Taylor group. They are one of the top holders of great malts outwith the makers.
Lots of toffe and vanilla on nose plus sherried fruit.
There is treacle in this along with more fruit, vanilla again and finishing with creamy sherry.
Rather nice this and is quite full bodied.
Impressive although not cheap. I could get friendly with this.
Not keen on the black bottle tho.

So far the best stocks of Rye go into Redemption because it is their own brand name. They even have a 18 year old Redemption Rye but it is expensive and hard to come by.

last in the bottle of this lovely 18 yr old sherry finished whisky. its small batch so varies a little, but can be had for just over 60 notes. top bargain.
Black Bull Kyloe.50%..blended malt/grain.
syrupy, creamy mouthfeel and taste. slightly sweet at first. lots of maddagascar vanilla and a good long finish. Superb for this price.. A winner.

A pearls of Scotland 17yr old Glentauchers.
Just a miniature as its no longer available.
Bottled at 47.7% this distilled in summer of 96 is quite a nice bourbon casked whisky.

TASTING NOTES
EYE
Light amber
NOSE
Peat, pears, fresh banana, savory spice, honey, malt and toasted pastries with a light floral note.
PALATE
Peat, pears, banana, spice, honey, roasted malt and a touch of acetone and a soft fruit candy sweetness.
FINISH
Long -> Orchard fruit, banana, smoke and vanilla candy.
BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Good sense of balance, full body and a soft oily feel.
Do I agree with that? Mostly. Not sure I am getting the acetone, which in my book is a good thing.
This is not what I was expecting from a peated malt. A pleasant surprise, as the peat is not too overpowering, allowing the other subtle flavours to come through.
Not tried any Indian stuff. I'm these days more into Scottish Scotch. Sounds like a nice flavour profile tho

ive been messing with blends lately finding out the good ones to try at good prices. some are very good value.
japanese whiskey has now got rules so they cant now import the scottish stuff like many companies do. i didnt know nikka from barrel had scotch in it:lol: maybe why its only one ive really quite liked

Glasgow 1770 Original..
This is young and punchy .. lots of oak, with dried fruits, and i think, mango. even with a half teaspoon of o2 it is still quite oaky. maybe been some first european oak in there, but its quite refreshing. pepper stays all way through finish and remains on tongue.
mouthfeel is good, and a little more age and this could be even better.
perhaps a little expensive for a 50cl bottle, which i might add is quite attractive, although the cork had started to leach brown colour to bottle neck and had bits missing.(not so good).. Non chill filtered and no colour by way... overall, promising.

Compass Box Oak Cross.
A nice dram of farmhouse fruits and bourbon barrel notes of honey, a little sweet vanilla and a nice malt backbone. This is a very nice drop i have to say. good medium allspice finish with just a splash of cream on the back palate near ending. Oak is well controlled and its got a bit of complexity to it.
This is a whisky most will buy again.

Did some Whiskey shopping today 2 bottles or Redwood Empire's special bottling for Morton's Steakhouse Chicago 40th Anniversary.
It is really good stuff ,had a bottle with friends. They loved it.
Tonight I am having Dalmore Portwood, It is exceptional and I love the glasses.
Good call on this one Grant, It is better than I expected it to be. The 18 year is amazing and this is close to that.

I once went to a dinner at Berry Bros & Rudd - and had some very good wines there. I remember one - though I wish I could recall what it was - but it was only about £17 a bottle, and orders of magnitude better than most wine I've ever sampled.
Is the same true of the whisky, perhaps? I guess that's a personal choice, but it'd be good to have an opinion.

certainly worth trying. its not got the depth of a glenfarclas or glendronnach and not as smooth but its way cheaper and is very nice indeed. i really like the speyside one too. completley different
