I took a punt on a bottle of this:

https://i.postimg.cc/Hs531xZv/tamnavulin-sherry-cask-edition-whisky.jpg (https://postimg.cc/ZCb6rTh6)

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/303300752

On offer - £30 /litre, very smooth, sweeter than I am used to, you can tell it comes from sherry casks, and very easy drinking. I think that it would go well with chocolate/Christmas cake. Well worth the money.

Finished my bottle of Glenfarclas 15..it was quite decent and my first of that age. Not bad value too so replaced it with a bottle of their cask strength 105.
It was cheaper than the 15, and at 60% a fair bit stronger so will need water, question is how much? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200704/fc19e039b9789336338ce5392f568516.jpg

yup, date distilled to date bottled. once in glass it stops 'aging' as such; ie reacting with air and wood. would have been expensive, and worth more probably every year

Grant, nice job on the shelf!
You filled it already too.
I have been looking at Glenfarclas , I can get that here , would you get the 15 year, or a 14 year Glenmorangie ?
I've not seen the cask strength GF here yet.
I could stand to learn some about scotch, seems distillers have broken out from tradition a little and everyone is trying something new.
I opened that inexpensive peat bomb large small valley , It's not the most refined, It's like adding alcohol to an ashtray and pouring it into a bottle.
Ralfy says you cant fully appreciate good whisky with out keeping a bottle or two of terrible whisky around . It's the fastest way to show someone the difference .
So I won't pour it down the drain.

James, open that bottle and sip it remembering your father!
This is how it can still be his gift.

Deanston is indeed a Highland malt technically.. It's not far from Stirling so it's not far into the region tho.
Glenrothes distillery is up at Rothes which is in Speyside region but pretty far north. It sometimes gets confused with the town of glenrothes which is in Fife quite low down near the forth.

Rich cherries and turkish delight lead to a sweet spice medium finish.

Couldn't resist opening this.. From the knockdhu.. They renamed the whisky ancnoc to avoid confusion with another distillery.
This is the vintage 2002 wit a nose of citrus and honey.. Tastes citrus and honey too, although the citrus comes late and is like peel. Medium finish, this is a super dram and it's a long time since I've had knockdhu.

46% non chill filtered, a nice Amber colour and was matured in Spanish and American oak..
Not cheap this although sometimes on offerhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200709/ac52fd26216ffb68f86d162bbbf05908.jpg

Grant,
You have some serious skills, It's like French noir film photography, all light and shade. Yet you do it with color.
I couldn't talk you in to doing video but can you describe the nose and pallet of what you are drinking and tell a little about what you like or don't like about it?

I have had the Redbreast Lustau, the 12 and 12 cask straight,I have the 15 but have not opened it yet.
So far I like the 12 cask straight the best with a 1/2 tea spoon of water. The Lustau edition is sweeter, but not as complex, It just seems like the green apple, and floral flavors are lost to me.
The sherry while subtle still changes and makes it a little 1 dimensional to me. Your thoughts?

my 'lady of the night'

A little stronger and a little younger and more brash perhaps, but still a fine version of the 12 yr old.
Sophisticated opening leads to a drier, less sweet finish, with a bit more fire in the belly... my 'lady of the night'

No laughing now. Lol.
It's good but the dryness and excess cinnamon in finish isn't imo ideal for a sherry. I think it might be the spirit not bring aged enough. Possible a section of it should have been put in a different sherry butt but of course it wouldn't be lustau then.

Taken from the Oddbins site:

The infinite (well, 500 plus) variety of grapes to be found in Italy is a source of constant wonderment. Of these varieties - Trebbiano, Passerina and Pecorino - go particularly well together. Found in the Marche region on the east coast of central Italy, they have combined to form, in this instance, a wine with gentle chamomile and acacia flavours, apple-y acidity and surprising body.

Grant, The Redbreast Lustau is a 10 year old Irish whisky with an additional year in a Spanish oak sherry cask.
I picked up this when I saw it today, Your side of the pond . I'll open it tomorrow night.
I believe it's a Speyside? It says Highlands on the bottle, but it could still be a Speyside because Spayside is in Highlands right? Or was that Glenfarclas ? Fruitcakey ? I know they use the tallest column stills in Scotland.
It has the most beautiful color, and no fake coloring added. Some times it looks purple, sometimes red .
My picture sucks, dose not show the real color of this gem. At $72.99 I could nearly have gotten a Glenfarclas 17 year or cask 105.
I was told $62,99 but thats not what I was charged, looking at my receipt later. Liquor stores are like that here. I should have looked at the receipt before leaving ,my bad. I know better.

Ah the quinta ruban.. Lovely dram, and I've got a bottle stashed myself. Very nice stuff. Yes morangie stills are very tall necks, about 5 metres and have an odd firing bulge at bottom I think.
The label used to say the 16 men from tain, on it but I think it's got just the men from tain.
They are pot stills as well, not column.

Anyway you will enjoy that. They do a 12 called Lasanta which is sherry cask finished.
Quinta is older now than it used to be, getting longer in the port tubes.
Enjoy Jeff

More interesting facts is the water used is spring water. It can take over 100 yrs for rain to emerge as spring water. The distillery were worried about contamination of the catchment area so bought about 650 acres so it stayed pristine.
The stills are designed originally from gin stills, thus the size, which are biggest in country.. and only a third of the second distill is used as whisky. The rest is reprocessed. A very fine whisky

depends on the person and their likes, and of course how much you want to spend... maybe an 18 year old Glen Grant.. comes in a nice box and is lovely stuff..
or maybe a Macallan sherry cask.. the 12 is about 60 odd.. the GG is maybe double that.

Not stupid amount = less than £400
The person in question has no particular preference in regions, which makes it more difficult.

In my opinion the best whiskeys I have ever had come from Scotland and Ireland, something about the slower aging in the cask makes them less bold in color than American whiskey's but there is more separation in the flavors and they retain there citrus and floral smells and flavors even when aged over 2 decades, American Bourbon becomes very dark in both color and flavors ,chocolate, leather .ect..
The stuff from Grants side of the pond is just more delicate and refined. Not saying I don't like a good bourbon they are just very different from one another.
Grant, what bottle of Glenfarclas is a good place to understand their flavor profile, for example I recommend the Redbreast 12 year cask with a little water or the regular 12 year for Redbreast drinkers as I think it represents the flavor profile of the brand better than the 15 year or Lustau. I have turned 3 people on to Redbreast this way. I have to be careful not to cause to much demand or like so many other things I liked it will be out of my reach.

Ok fair enough Whisky.
Anything distilled from gain is whisky if in America whiskey.
The Scotts have taken it to a whole other level and in the early 90's a bottle of 21 year McClellan proved that point to me forever.
I was able to buy 3 bottles in my like but stopped drinking whiskey for a long time when prices sky rocketed here.
A bottle of Redbreast 12 brought me back in, and since my pantry is becoming a liquor cabinet.

Yes, even grain whisky tho uses malted barley, as it gives the enzymes that convert the starches to fermenting sugars, that makes the beer. Grain is distilled in column stills, which are continuous things and produce very strong alcohol 80+% abv. Malt whisky has to have 100%malted barley.
In bourbon they usually add a bit of malted barley for the enzymes, although they also add industrial ones too. Corn doesn't malt easily so they need it.
Ireland used to be without an E, but when Scots started making their whisky it was giving the Irish stuff a bad name so they changed it to with an Eto distinguish it apart.. [emoji23]
Of course Scotch is now regarded as the best.
Bourbon is usually made with column stills too. Scottish Single malt is always made in pot stills.

Terroir: Selection among the most beautiful plots, the terroirs are gneiss and limestone of altitude which peak at 350m. It is an altitude terroir whose night freshness allows the tannins to mature gently, the most elegant expression of aromas and finesse.

Vinification: Harvest and manual sorting. Vatting variable from 20 to 30 days from 35 to 40 days favouring the greatest sweetness in the extractions. Malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels.

Tasting: Beautiful ruby red colour. Aromatic complexity. Finesse aromas of garrigues (scrubland), truffles and black olives. Elegant palate, present and velvety at the same time. The tannins are sweet and vanilla.

Sent as a gift from my partner's son in France, who like me is a bit of an oenophile :)

The Japanese are catching up fast. Just look at the best single malt in the 2020 world whisky awards.

I'm not that keen on Japanese stuff. I like it but not as much as, say bourbon. It's complex but not what I prefer. It's better than Belgian tho or Welsh. [emoji23]

The 14 year Glenmorangangie quinta ruban was a perfect scotch on so many levels for me.
Nothing was over powering, the ABV felt just right for the flavors ,no strong burn, not overwhelming peat ,port or bourbon flavors . It all married nicely and just made you want another sip every time.
This bottle should come with a warning ,because it's just hard to put back in the box. I really can't find anything bad to say about it. And it is not the most expensive bottle in the store.

I am now looking at Grants post #3078.
Looks like another good choice.

I agree with you Grant. I have a Yamazaki 12 YO, which retails at around €65 over here. I can buy a better Scottish Single Malt for that kind of cash. The Yam is good, but overpriced in comparison.

A quick Nikka at barrel strength of 51.4%abv.
Jaoanese blended malt and grain from Miyagikyo and Yoichi distilleries. Use of bourbon, sherry and hogshead here to give a complex whisky.. It's up to £43 a 50cl bottle now do pretty expensive for what it is, although a nice light, expressive dram. One of the better value Japanese whiskies.

looks like a great cabinet. i could do with one of those..right height for bottles.. as to the sweetness, no its not super sweet, just an edge of sweet... as opposed to sour or dry etc. think you would like it and it comes in a rather fine tin with a painted scene on.

I have heard let it open up 30 min. before you drink and it blooms like a delicate flower.

its very busy jeff.. it has a bite in taste and nose.. nuts, fruit, and quite spicy on the tongue. not as sherry front as the 15, but quite a bit busier/ complex whatever you want to call it.. might be some chocolate there too and honey..

i do love the 15 so im comparing re that a bit as its half the price i guess. not tried water so far but your right it needs 10 mins or so to calm down.

actally added a splash of h2o and yes it opens a few more doors, and tames its boisterous nature.. oddy at 25 its still young at heart due to the very strong wood i think

I bought six of these yesterday at Lidl (about £4.50 per bottle, and I will be going back for more), just as a bit of a punt. Wasn't expecting much, but very pleasant surprise - if only I had a decent baguette, some 18month Comte and a few bits of saucisson or rough cut pate, I could dream of camping in France.

Light, dry, fairly smooth with a few rough edges a really "honest" little wine:

That review makes me want it more, 15 year is not sold in the U.S. 12 or 17 year then on to 21 or 25 but the 25 is the grand finally as 30 year and up is unobtainable for most people.
The 50 year can be ordered but its over 2K. and only 900 bottles where produced world wide. 60 year forget about it. Better chance of being abducted by aliens while on the toilet on the 2nd Tuesday of the week in the last month of a leap year.

The cask strength tastes like the 12 but everything is amplified, It has legs like the 15 , last night to my tastes the 15 was better than the 12 , I was getting a fruitcake , shortbread cookie and cinnamon with butter scotch on the back.
I was enjoying them to much but last night the 15 really opened up and was the bell of the ball.
I started with no water but added 1/2 teaspoon and that both smoothed things out and took away the bite but left the Dublin hug..
The pool is not mine belongs to my friend Brad in one of the pictures. I wish I could send a small video of his back yard it is crazy cool after dark, the lights ,fire and water features are not to be believed.

This is completely matured in first-fill sherry seasoned casks.. nose is astounding... boy that sherry hits you between the eyes

its spices, fruity but also dry-ish too.. quality wood this and a teaspoon of water opens it up and tames it slightly as its 48.8%abv... orange is strong to, and a bit of cream too... good mouthfeel too.

i think i like this even if its a nas..:eyebrows:

perhaps 2 teaspoons

The other new one today will be the Redbreast 15. You got me taste buds going..

Nose gives an extra to the 12 of wax polish. Maybe Mangos too..

Good mouthfeel with a little banana and maybe caramel or butterscotch. A bit drier finish, a bit grapefruity. This is with a teaspoon of water. A second splash evens out the drier, sourer notes a bit.
It's got a kick for 46% no doubt.. Typical pot still.. I might end up liking this too https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200720/cf7d19c809efbdd8778c5721c39a5010.jpg

If Cork is still solid then tip it upside down a few times and it should soften again. You should do this with all whisky as a matter of course to keep cork moist. Maybe every 3 months or so is a good gauge

You got us all beat by a thousand bottles Grant.
The Lustau is a 10 year aged with one additional year in a sherry cask yet some how when compaired to the 12 or 15 seems much younger, the legs and the back of the pallet compares to a 4 to 6 year Bourbon. tried to take a nice picture of tonights whisky but I don't have your skills with a phone camera.
Not that I'm complaining,I still enjoy it , Im just glad my first Redbreast was 12 year CS. As that was a very nice way to appreciate the true flavor profile and quality of the brand.

Looks great. Love the clam. Yes lustau feels younger than 11 but it might be that they might have used European oaked sherry cask for last year and it might have been a bit strident. ie, a first fillhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200726/ba794de262e0369a8764fcd344546951.jpg

The shell lamp came from Maui where my parents lived for 3 years.
one of a kind if memory serves correct , there was an story in the newspaper of my Mom buying it .
She liked to buy local art. My sister got 2 paintings I got the lamp.
Somehow Grant you got light and color back into my photo.

Not tried it Jeff. It's a vatted Nas malt. Supposedly glenturret and some macallan and something else vatted up in a butt for 6 months. I guess it will be fairly inoffensive, and may be quite pleasent. At price it might be worth a try.

The something else is Highland park and Glennroth. They are all supposed to be Speyside Scotch going into the blend.
What is a Nas malt?

Lochranza Arran Bodega sherry cask.
This is a young but potent dram at 7years in sherry and out of cask at 55.8%.
Lots of sherry in this and some strong floralness on nose too behind it.
Strong so will get a little water but what a nose

May improve with air this too

It's funny but you would think it would be easy to find in the U.S. but so much of our top shelf bottles go to export.
Japan and Europe buy a lot of whiskey.

This is a problem too.

https://sacramento.craigslist.org/for/d/sacramento-blantons-whiskey-pappy/7168039710.html

$100.00 for Weller SR. it's a $50.00 bottle, $150 for Blanton's a $60.00 bottle full retail.
I would like to try Weller Antique 107 but not from these guys at $140.00 to $150.00 a screw top bottle. It should be $60.00 to $70.00 a bottle.

I bought myself a bottle of Glenmorangie "midwinters night dram 2017" in Morrisons for about £20 three years ago:

A nice read on Glenfarclas ages.

https://malt-review.com/2019/05/28/glenfarclas-15-21-and-25-year-old/

The 15 is not available here it goes C.S. 12,17,21,25.

Hence my 16 year Anniversary present from my lovely wife Nosheen .
She got me a bottle of Glenfarclas 21 year and a 12 year old bottle of Dominican rum.
Grant, between you and my friend Brad ,I have been inspired to enjoy a good whiskey again.
I only drink 50ml. on Friday and Saturday nights so I am going with the good stuff.
I will have a nice rum to at some point but my favorite is whiskey.

Sadly here in the U.S. I will never know what a 15 year is,but I can try a 17 year .
I'm sure it will be different though.
It was your comments in the 15 that got me interested in the G.F. brand. This is the first review I have seen that was not happy with the 15 year.

Ever like something when you where young ,taste it later and say to your self thats piss what was I thinking.
I used to drink JB rare blended scotch when I was a teen into my 20's then moved on.
I wanted to put something in my 2 liter cask to keep it from drying out so I added 1.75 liter bottle of JB and gave it a taste.
Peat & piss, No self respecting Scotsman would drink this, it has to be export only.
This is to Scotch what Thunderbird is to wine. I'll leave it in the barrel permanently.

Also decided to open this from the newly opened Wolfburn distillery.. Langskip at 58% is potent, and young.
Lots of light fruit and ginger on nose. Nuts, more nuts and fruit. Then spices.. Pepper and ginger again. Something else too but can't place it.
A teaspoon of water is a big plus. Smoother again, and spices under control. More nuts, almonds I think.

Damn good this for a very young lassie.
Can't wait for this distillery to get some older stock.
Fabulous stuff for age.. 5 star consideringhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200802/922c080b36392a8bc042f4913c99ac8b.jpg

A long finish with this.. This I think would go down a storm in usa.

two teaspoons and the fire returns but it opens up even more.. heavier fruits... more oak spice.. really is stunning for a very young whisky, age i dont know but cant be old..great wood.

It was $120.00 here and that is very reasonable for it's age and quality.
I plan to stash one away for when Conner graduates collage as a gift. By then it may be unobtainable here.
It was to long ago I had McClellan 21 but I don't remember it being this good to be honest. I remember it being darker in flavor more leathery.
92 was awhile back, but I do love this GF 21. Both light fruits and darker fruits like mango and papaya the 21 is just an assortment and it stays in your mouth for a good long time.
I used a straw to put 3 to 4 drops of water in a generous pour and it got even better,I let it sit in the Tuath glass for 25 min. before tasting.
The finish was like Indian Mango and chocolate, This and the Redbreast 15 are my favorites to date,

I really eye the shelves in the scotch section over and over reading bottles ,trying to educate my self.
I feel the GF21 to be the best integration of a Sherry cask into a scotch I have ever had. It never dominates at any point in the from my lips through the long finish.
It really takes you on a flavor ride.

I opened a bottle of Fettercairn 12 year old the other day.
Not as complex a flavour as I am used to, but after the first glass, perfectly acceptable.

It is quite light in colour, similar to honey. Nose is supposed to be Vanilla and pear, with soft spices, it I struggled to find it.
Taste: refreshing nectarine and tropical fruits, with a subtle roasted coffee, clove and ginger. A memorable finish of sultanas and black toffee.
Again, I didn’t get all of that, I certainly found the tropical fruits, and the coffee, and fortunately did not find the clove, as I am not keen on clove.

The thing I found odd was it seemed aggressive on the tongue at first. I am hoping that as it now has had a bit longer to breathe, the taste will be better.

This is pretty hard not to like. Just a drop of water or two and it offers far more than most none age statement scotches I have tried.
It changes as you sip ,sometimes I think I taste a small amount of peat and the next sip non at all.
$29.00 U.S. and it seems a little brother to the G.M. 14 year Quinta Ruban.

Famed as having some of the smallest stills in country. Small stills, big flavour.. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200810/cdd5f23c535609d2eda95143d190f8d4.jpg

Sherry, oak, flowers and toffee on nose, a little dark chocolate, sherry and honey are in mouth with a fruity and spicy finish

Some truly great wines there at, quite frankly, daft prices!

The Chianti Riserva DOCG, in particular, is an absolute stonker - one of thee best I've ever had, and could easily command a price of three times that amount!!:trust::cheers:

I will get to Lidl but its not somewhere we normally shop, we do go to Aldi though. as for buckfast not tasted it in about 40 years. At my age I remember when people in this area area thought wine came in three flavours, dinner wine, clear wine or dark wine.

Marco

Lol, no worries... You do realise that I'll keep hounding you until you go!:D:eyebrows:;)

Aldi is fine, but Lidl have the better wine selection.

Here everything is 750ml. so when I find a good 1 liter bottle I'm all over it.

Ok just happened to drive in to Lidl this morning and made a couple of purchases, however you do get some strange looks when you take photos of their wine, probably thought I was on a spy mission from Aldi.

Awesome, although a bit closer up, so I could see the labels more would've been good!:ner:;)

But it looks pretty similar to the layout in my store, so lots of stuff there worth buying... I'll have a closer squint later and, as I know most of those wines well, and will make a few reccos.

Glad you picked up the Chianti though, so will be interested to know what you think:cool:

Talking of whisky, this is some Japanese stuff. Quite floral, but fairly young. Nice tho and fairly potent, hence a splash of the h2o is advisable.

Imperial gold.. I'll take a guess at Russian Vodka

Ding,ding,ding correct guess.
Russia can make both the best and worst vodka , this one is upper middle shelf but very hard to get here.I would have liked to gotten one with the cardboard tube.
I won't pay $200.00 for a bottle of the best vodka from anywhere. It's just going to end up in a bloody marry some morning.
I do believe in getting vodka from natural water sources and 5 to 6 times distilled . The taller the column still the better it tastes.
Cheap vodka hurts my brain.
BTW the cabinet still has room for 3 more bottles, I will have to be picky.

It was a limited run , Donald Trump doesn't drink ,he decided he never would after loosing a close family member at a young age to drinking.
Even when he orders a drink it's alcohol free. He doesn't mind if others have a sip but it is his personal vow in memory of his alcoholic brother Fred Trump JR. that died from drinking.
Donald came home from a movie to learn his brother died of a hart attack induced by drinking to much.It has upset Donald forever. Something people don't know about Donald is he really cares for people.
He believes familys are critical for children to grow up with a future, This is why he got so involved with prison reform, Drugs and drinking leads to broken family's. To many familys with Dad's locked up for small time drug offenses
while big time dealers walk free. Drugs are killing an entire generation here,I see it every day , needles, heroin, meth and crack,
Nice looking 15 year bottle ,enjoy Grant!
