One of the best distilleries in the Highlands. Is it their new 43% 12yr old?
I've a bottle of legacy open at moment and a lovely delacate whisky. I've also a fancier one at cask strength.
You'll enjoy that. Don't be afraid to pop a spot of spring water in if it is a little firey.
You nailed it, 43% 12 years old.
I used to drink Scotch with an ice cube or two.
I'll probably try that first.

Check it out, Master of Malt (yep, us!) has got a single cask Tomatin all its own! The single malt was distilled on 16 January 2008, and left in a single first-fill bourbon cask for over a decade. At 11 years old, the Highlander was bottled on 9 September 2019, with a release of 234 limited bottles at 60% ABV. This is a wonderfully honeyed affair.

Christmas is the best time in the U.S./ California to buy a nice bottle, the sales and selection start getting better mid November just before Thanksgiving and by Dec 40% to 50% off!
Even really good stuff is priced to sell .Because retailers have to pay tax on what ever doesn't sell by January 1.
It is also better to buy in Nevada and drive it home to California as there is no taxes.
The bottles you are showing now are Christmas bottles here.
Glengoyne, Glenfarclas, Glendronach for sherried are always good.. Older ones pref if you see them.
Other distilleries to watch for are likes of Edradour, Glenglassach, Glen Grant, Springbank, Deanston, Hazelburn.. Wolfburn are back so stuff is still young but worth the finding too. Dalmore 15 Yr old is a cracker too

I have been reading a bottle of whiskey needs to be consumed with in 4 months of opening it or it looses its flavor.
Is that B.S. ? Because Grant drinks a different drop each night.
You either have 50 open bottles or a really bad liver.
Hoping it's not the latter as I have been there 4 years ago.
So I am taking it easy. 2 ounces twice a week.
I keep mine in a dark pantry and our house is on the cool side of the thermostat.
Sometimes 3 nights if I have company.
Depends on storage and age really. Older whiskies won't react to air very much while younger ones will. Cool and in lowish light a 10yr old will be fine for a few years OK. A 20 Yr old will last a lot longer. They won't go off, but at worst might change a little. Not nessesarilly for worse, just different

So, I shouldn't stress over anything in a cool dark pantry for at least a year.
My Step dad used to only buy 1.75 liter bottles of reasonably priced booze as he always offered drinks to everyone.
Thanksgiving dinner we had well over 80 people for dinner they would have gallon bottles of Gallow wine on the tables ,2 big turkeys made in Mom's double ovens.
They would go through wine,beer and mixed drinks till nearly midnight and drive home with one eye closed. My Mom had 7 brother and sisters alone,in-laws kids ,her Mom and Dad then me my brothers and sisters their kids and Toms Mother and Father . That small cabinet had constant rotation. He always had a drink and a cigar going. My Moms family all built houses on the same street less than a mile from us. So someone was always stopping by for a drink. This is the exact opposite of our house.We are never home as Conner plays Baseball , BMX racing or Basketball all year but when parents or coaches come by it's nice to have a few open bottles to choose from.
Covid has slowed our roll but soon Baseball may reopen. And getting together for a drink is part of the culture.
Not if its been aged say 10yrs or more. Most change will be in first week of air getting at a bottle. Often improves it a bit by taking off the ethenol nose hit. I usually did this with a certain tennessee sippin' whiskey. Decanted it into 2 bottles. Improved it nicely.
You could set up a nice test. Take some that's been in a bottle for a year v some out of a new bottle. Blind test it. [emoji23]
I just bought a bottle of Red Breast 12 Cask Strength 55.8% thats just over 111 proof .
Sure to kill Covid 19.
I got it for when my sons pitching coach comes over, he keeps a stock pile of Red breast of most vintages.
He likes the 12 year, the Lustow Edition, and 21 year but oddly doesn't care for the 15 year.
The most expensive bottle in the house, thats for sure.
Not tried the cask strength. Might need a splash of h2o for me. Quite fancy trying it tho

This is my friends stash of Red Breast.
He has other bottles but he clearly likes Irish Whisky the most.
The picture came out small but there are 5 bottles there including a 21 year.

I found it at Smart & Final for the best price ever.
In fact the Red Breast Cask strength was only $46.99 regular price $70.00. It was supposed to be the regular 12 year but the supplier just shipped what they had and so the customer wins .
This happens sometimes as they order cases for each of there many locations. So they may order 500 bottles a year of just one product.

Next time, you're in, could you do me a favour and photograph what they've got inside their 'specialist selection' in the wooden crates in the far top L/H side of the store, near the checkouts, and post the pics here?
I'd like to see what they've got so I can make some reccos based on stuff you can actually get!

Got a bottle of Glendronach coming to drying.. Just a nice 12. Don't want to open my 15 yet as it's hard to replace

A friend of mine got a bottle of Whistle pig 6 year and I bought a bottle of Pikesville 6 year.
The Pikesville really has a beautiful almost copper color.
Both are Rye Whiskey in the $50.00 price range ,both are well respected.
Being Rye Whiskeys you would expect them to taste similar, well they don't.
The Whistle pig is light in color by comparison but much darker,spicier ,nutmag and cinnamon and peat wood , The Pikesville is mint,cherry,citrus and oak and just hints of cinnamon.
The Pikesville is 110 proof and the burn is sharp at the finish but just a drop of water makes a huge difference making the finish smooth and longer lasting.
The W.P.6 was just under 100 proof 96.56 proof if I remember right and tastes darker than it looks Earthy comes to mind.
They are both very good but totally different animals, I would drink either one Pikesville is 59% Rye 39% corn 10% malted barley , W.P. is 100% Rye.
The Pikesville dose have more bite on the finish, if your sipping totally neat but it wouldn't be a deal beaker for me ,Id get another bottle .Just add 2 to 4 drops of water from a straw.
A Bourbon drinker would love Pikesville mint,cherry, oak ,the W.P is very dry and Earthy. No confusing one for the other thats for sure.

It is a lot like a high rye Bourbon , Wish I could send you a bottle, It is good but I'm not sure it is E80 good.
I am on the look out for Glendronach 12 here now. The color alone makes me want to try it.
It is $58.99 when in stock.
Think the 15 Glenfarclas is a fair bit better tbh.
If you can find it. 15yr old Glendronach revival is great but a bit pricier.. Farclas stuff is some of the best value quality scotch for me

Nice impressive cellar. Great thing about wine is you can (should) store it on side. Can't do that with whisky tho so storage is a bit more difficult.

I'm not sure... I'd have to ask the butler!:D
During lockdown, and with the current hot weather, we've been drinking rather more wine than usual (particularly chilled white and rosé), but in normal circumstances usually no more than a couple of bottles a week. I like to have a well-stocked 'cellar', so I can pair appropriate wines with a meal, depending on the food I'm having, and so in that respect I never like to have less than 100 bottles in stock at any one time:)
Plus some are rare vintage fine-wines, which I'm laying down to improve with age, mainly claret and burgundy, and keeping for a special occasion. The fridges (we have two) are also full of champagne and other sparkling wines, as well as white and rosé (plus lager, beer and various soft drinks) - and I won't mention all the different vermouths, sherry, madeira, aperitifs and liqueurs/digestifs, plus gin, rum, vodka and other 'mixers' for making cocktails, there are in our 'bar' - yes we enjoy entertaining!:lol:
When one is a bon vivant, one must live up to one's reputation...
Yup, got a few nice malts, but nothing approaching Grant's level. The problem for me is that Del doesn't drink whisky, so unless I have friends or family over, who appreciate a nice malt, it tends to just sit there. Different sharing a bottle of wine together, over a nice meal. I suspect that Grant has the same issue, the other way round. However, when he comes to visit, I intend to turn him into more of a wine-o!:ner:

How did the Rum finish work out?
How did the Rum finish work out?Thought it was good. Likes a bit of air, and water is optional. I didn't bother until the end of glass jut to try.
I've still got gelstons port finish to try
Tonight it's Tullibardine 228. This is a Burgandy finished whisky from the Blackford distillery in Perthshire.
It gets a 12 month finish in red Burgandy casks from Chateau de Cassagne Montrachet which Is in the Cote de Beaune..

I had some of Grants Buffalo juice a popular Kentucky Bourbon here, little brother to Blantons . I like it.
After a jiggers worth, I decided to check on the Rum barrel , to my delight it had changed color from amber to copper and even though I only use spiced rum for a mixer it was pretty darn good.
It was time to drain it back into it's bottle some what darker , smoother and better tasting.
After draining the cask and letting it air an hour or two I pored in the nearly full bottle of Buffalo Trace,the nearly full bottle of Elijah Craig small batch, both Bourbons and I still had room for a 70% full bottle of Old Forester Rye so it will be a High Rye Bourbon with a Rum finish at some later undisclosed date. 90,94 and 100 proof so I'm thinking it should be around 95 proof at the end of the day.
Great video on the benefits of small barrels, they can do in weeks what takes a large cask a year. Mine is a 2 liter and when full oddly it holds just under 2 liters, fill it to the top come back a month later and you have 1.75 liter between what soaks into the wood and a small amount of evaporation.

There are a lot of people selling junk barrels at unreasonable prices ,so be sure to check the sellers reviews and reputation.
I was told to get the exterior in unfinished raw wood and use a heat gun and bees wax to finish and help seal . Varnish dose not let the wood breath like bees wax so it ages the spirit faster.
It is also food safe, When you get your barrel, Put the tap in with a mallet, easy not to hard a blow,just seat it. Put it on the stand in the sink. Boil a large pot of water ,use a funnel and pour it in the bung.

ive not had any of this bottle and its been a while since my last one(maybe 4 years) but its much better than the 12, not that the 12 isnt nice.. its slightly sweet as some of it has been in Pedro Ximénez casks. its smoother and richer tho.
try the edradour 10.. youll like that stuff.. its superb for a 10 yr old.. redbreast stuff is very nice noo, so you could try those..
also if not tried, tomatin might suit. the cheap legacy is very good; just add a teaspoon of water; pref spring

a bit more of everything really.. thicker mouthfeel and a little creamier... plenty fruit .. lovely dram, but it is twice the price.. not sure that on a regular occurance i'd not rather have 2 12's :lol: (well maybe i'd take the 15) but yes its a fabulous drink and you do have to pay extra often to get extra in whiskies. quite special really, although the 12 for its price is bloody good too

as for the spots, ive tried the green but not the yellow... its quite expensive and will struggle to beat redbreast imo. but you never know til you try so i will get to it, god willing:eyebrows:

Yeah the 12yr plus Irish whiskies do tend to be a bit pricey, not helped by the exchange rate. The advantage of being in Dublin is at least you can sample it in the pub(when they reopen) before investing in a bottle.
From memory the yellow spot is smoother with less spice than the redbreast.

My friend that gave me the 15 , has a really large collection of wine, the only one I know who can compete with Marco. His good stuff in really heavy bottles is in a special temperature controlled 300 bottle cabinet.
He is moving and we had to transport the collection last night in our trucks. So many old Caribbean Rums too.

It stacks both higher and lower than it looks ,both top and bottom holds wine and its 8ft. long , my truck only has a 6 1/2 foot bed.
I am not a wine guy , I did think of Marco when loading all the boxes, I did learn the heavy glass wine bottles are the better wines ,I was surprised just how heavy a box of 12 bottles could be.
When the move is over ,I'll ask him to take pictures of some of the better bottles and post them.

Been doing a tidy today and included in that i found and reboxed most of my sealed whisky, as in summer there is too much light. I have a small freezer coming so needed to make some room. Ive come to conclusion I will be living mostly from freezer this year so have bought a bit more space.

That back yard is an adult Disneyland , believe me. The only pool I ever saw that has a remote control for all the features, My friend has only moved in his house for 3 to 4 days and the learning curve is huge because of al the high tech.
They are a great family, and he has been working with Conner on pitching and hitting. The 3 months off due to Covid 19 has not been good for kids they all gained weight and there skills became rusty.
They get out of breath fast, an athlete can't take 3 months off and come right back. There batting speeds are down ,pitching speeds down it stinks.

Its youngish but at the pricepoint pretty decent.
See the difference in colour this Edradour 10. This stuff looks like it's come out of the deep earth..

I love the smokey Islay whiskys, so that includes Laphroaig. I usually drink the Quarter Cask.

edit.. very nice this; still has the redbreast 12 basics, but maybe a bit younger and peppery.. great winey nose, but not overly once it settles. same creamy pot still, but with the quality sherry and new spanish oak finish. 10 mins plus of air and it really settles into a very nice dram. i can see this being a regular on my final rotation...slange
impressed.. it is over 46% so i feel a splash of h2o is helping it in all ways, for me anyway. not that it isnt good without. definately going into a possible rotation:eyebrows:

Ah ok... Aldi's more organised in that respect. They've employed a 'traffic light' system at entrances to stores, which monitors and controls the amount of people inside at any one time, so if it's green [which now it invariably is] you just go:)
I've not seen any queues there for weeks... Same as pretty much any supermarket here now. In that respect, it's almost back to normal.

I just read an article that because Air bus is subsidized it has an unfair advantage ,so we put a tax on scotch and Biscuits till the EU comes to the table.

No not diabetic, but watch sugar and salt , as you get older you need too take a bit more care. Yes remember all the older drinks and when I was young their were very few choices.
Everything in moderation, Robin, is my motto. So if I have a sugary soft drink, then it's ONE and not another for a week or so. I like to treat myself and not abuse things. Same applies to sweets, crisps and ice-cream, which I also enjoy in MODERATION, including alcohol!
Nothing is bad for you if you don't abuse it:)

Lol... Oh I agree, you've got to enjoy yourself, but some folks don't seem able to, without taking things to excess/extremes, and so it's 'all or nothing'. For example, we had neighbours who couldn't keep biscuits in the house without eating multiple packets, or cakes without having to eat the whole things at once!
I've never been like that, which is why I can have a house full of booze, but never get drunk, a houseful of food, but never become obese, and have the odd bottle of fizzy pop in the fridge, and 'ration' myself with it, without needing a full crate!;)
That's why I don't deprive myself of ANYTHING. *Nothing* is 'bad for me' (in moderation)...
The good thing about glass bottles of soft drinks is that the content stays fizzy for longer, and most importantly, they don't hold too much... Modern plastic bottles of the same can contain up to 2 litres! Just imagine all that sugar!:eek: And of course you feel obliged to finish the lot...
I also like diluted fruit drinks, and Barley Water is nice, although these days I bring a stock of much nicer stuff over from France, such as this, from La Maison Guiot [which is often sold in French bars and restaurants]:

It's gorgeous stuff, which I assure you knocks anything sold in UK supermarkets into a cocked hat! We usually get a case of 12 different flavours, which can last us 2 years or more. It's great for making 'mocktails' in the summer!:)

Yeah, that's nice, although we only used Fevertree stuff as mixers, so ginger ale isn't really appropriate for what we tend to drink. Therefore we use their Mediterranean and Indian tonic waters, which are great for cocktails or just adding, ice cold, to your favourite tipple, in order to make it 'longer':)

Yeah, the stuff inside those was so much better than what's sold now in plastic bottles or cans. As I said, my old man used to sell all sorts of bottles of 'ginger' in his shops, during the 70s and 80s, but that Irn Bru outsold anything else by a massive margin - it used to 'walk out' the door almost with every fish supper sold!
My job (among other things) was re-stocking all the shelves in the morning, and in those days the bottles came in wooden crates of a dozen [which I had to carry in from the store outside], so weighed a bloody ton... Good for your arm muscles, though!:D
I don't think any of us realised at the time how much of a 'golden era' that was, for so many things [drinks, sweets, ice-cream and all sorts of stuff], which simply isn't the same now....

a fabulous sherried 12 year old this.. not cheap but you have to pay for the quality of the wood. MacAllan always did have great barrels.

I did a lot of on line reading about scotch today, I now have a far better understanding of the variety's, where in Scotland they come from and why they can all be so wonderfully different from each other.
There are Speyside ,Highlands, Islay and Lowlands 1% mostly for ladies. I listed them in the order of number of distilleries.
I also learned that because of Scotland's very cool temperatures and fluctuation of + or - 30 degrees F ,maturation is very slow . So slow in fact 1 year of maturation in Kentucky = 4 years in Scotland because of the warmer temperatures and wild fluctuation between day and night. So a 10 year bottle is a very young bottle of Scotch, so it is like a 2.5 year bottle of bourbon. A ten year bottle of Bourbon is like a 40 year Scotch! Wow! but there are flavor profiles that come from slow maturation you cant get from a faster maturation like the taste of spiced fruit cake for example found in older Scotch.
Some of those peat bogs can hold very old peat the deeper you go down and older peat offers different results in the flavor of the smoke.
I really enjoy a good Scotch, I just wish I could afford some of the better bottles like in the 90's when everyone was drinking Zima and wine coolers and a 21 year bottle Mcallan was $75.00!
I wish I had put a few aside but at that time $75.00 seemed like a lot.But I bought a couple over two or 3 months and enjoyed them with my Dad.
After reading I now understand why a old Speyside Scotch is so coveted, because of the craft and time it takes to make such a fine bottle.
Scots must be the most patient people on earth ,so not like Americans. It's like a young man planting a tree and thinking "when I retire 30 to 40 years from now I can enjoy it's first fruit".

Great bit of research Jeff. It's an amazing, and complex subject. Lots of things affect the profile of the whiskies including still size, shape and of course the yeast. Most tho will be wood.
Macallan uses very small stills(3900 litres) , just that they have LOTS OF Them.. All identical. All malt from here is from pot stills.

Still a 12 and super honeyed sweetness mingles with a good deal of spice. Ive had this before and its superb. Another class act.

They say it's the best $55.00 bottle of bourbon you can buy if you can find it.
a little over $60.00 with tax. I like that it is 115 proof at or near cask strength too.

ive heard of it; read the story a while ago jeff.. was a bunnahabahin cask bought by some German i remember. half of it was recasked in a herring barrel... most bizarre lol. im not a big lover of bunna so no, ive not looked for it

Mortlach is although in the Speyside region for whisky, considered to be the beast of distilleries, making powerful chewy whisky... They are one of the few to use worm tubs to give that weightiness to the spirit

I got these today , I really don't like the maple bomb / Lincoln county processed Jack Danial's.
It was better in the 1980's though when it was 90 proof.
People think Evan Williams is a copy of Jack but let me assure you it is not, and I like it better.
I had not tried there Bottled in bond or there Single Barrel vintage so I picked them up today.
Both made by Heaven Hill.
It is very reasonably priced but the quality is very good, according to Ralfy on You Tube.

That's s very good price for a high-end 'Super Tuscan', and one of the finest wines Italy produces! You could easily pay twice that or more!! Snap it up folks if you're looking for a beautifully rich and full-bodied red for a special occasion:cheers:

The Macallan 12Yr old double cask.
American and European sherry oak, with a higher proportion of American ex sherry casks used here. No bourbon casks are used.

Tonight started with us drinking my Rum Casked high rye whiskey OLD WETT MUTT , I then went to a friends house and brought a bottle of Evan Williams single barrel ,we moved to Winchester bourbon then to a nice XO Brandy. So I've had a few tonight.
Rittenhouse straight rye 100proof.
Cinnamon and vanilla custard. Lots of soft spices mingles in palate, and a light spicy lingering finish. Very smooth for 50%

So how was the rye?
It was Eliga Craig small batch, Buffalo Trace and old Forster's Rye. and it came out a chocolate , cherry bomb , nutty with backing spices.
But it strongly tastes like chocolate .
I just refilled the barrel with Carlyle scotch. And it can just stay in as a decanter.
Not the best brand I'm sure buy the big 1.5 liter bottles where on sale for $18.00 and at that price I thought it wouldn't hurt to fill the barrel with.
Into a heavyweight today.. Aberlour A'Bunadh.. this is batch 63, and comes out of barrel at a powerhouse 61%, or to Americans, 122 proof.
Spanish Oloroso casks galore and its very much christmas cake time.. tbh it needs a bit of water, but surprisingly not that much.

chocolate eh.. yes ive had dark choc before but not so powerful as you got... the scotch im sure will improve a fair bit in your barrel..

I put 2 liters of Carlyle in the barrel, To improve on it some.
I got a big jug of blended Islay scotch, as it is no longer imported so it was really,really cheap .
And a bottle of Bottled in Bond Jim Beam.
grant, feel free to comment if you know of these scotches. I know they are the shelf closest the floor but sometimes even budget brands can be very enjoyable.
strathboag(blended) is bottled by macduff international in glasgow(not to be mixed up with macduff distillery in macduff) the madeup word strathboag from the gaelic would be large little valley;) work that out lol..
its made obviously for the foreign market and is apparently smokey and a quite nice drink for the money, or so im told. im guessing the other scotch ones will be similar. sure that a bit longer aging in your tub might even improve them.. i dont like jim beam now.. it was the first bourbon i tried and thought it good til i tried others.

Bankers is here, but there are no more wood sugars left ,all this cask can do now is filter and mellow a little .It makes a nice decanter now.
I am also not a Jim Beam fan but they are discontinuing their bottled in bond and it was very limited any way . I may use this bottle as trade one day because there is a huge amount of Jim Beam collectors here.
I will have to give Bankers a try , I was looking for something that could be mixed , when people come over. Except the peated whiskey, I was told on recommendation it was a good enough to drink straight.
I 'll try it Friday. BTW: The Carlyle stuff sells like crazy here, people buying it by the box of 4 x 1.75 liters. Boxes stacked up near the end caps, So I thought it must be worth a try as a good mixer.
It out sells J.B. and J.W. red label as a mixer. I am not going to let friends dump coke over a nice 12 year old single malt.
Yep, people really do that here. More often than not ,I'm afraid.

Hazelburn is a non peated offering from Springbank and both highly regarded and thus hard to find.

As I say it's not peated but there is a hint of smoke there which may be off the wood, or there maybe a very small % od smoked barley in it. Some peaches too. Been a while since I tasted it, and have been holding off from opening as its hard to come by..it sells fast as does most Springbank offerings
