All the big supermarkets (and Iceland) offer a special service for Boxster owners. Costs next to nowt, but you don't always get what you asked for.

I could always buy a Boxster now but I'm in no rush to change cars at the moment but will definitely look into one in the future....

I've never owned a British car, apart from a couple of company cars, as I always went with Italian or French
I've owned loads of cars since I passed my test at 17... my first car was a rear engine Skoda.... I know there were many jokes about Skoda's of that era but to be honest it was super as a first car and very reliable. My father got it for scrap and fitted a new engine etc. Then came the Alfasud which was a revelation handling wise and the exhaust sound was amazing.. then a number of other Italian and French cars, plus a Honda Civic, before I owned the Merc W124... the Merc was the car I owned the longest, 9 years, then came the Prius

I need to flush the brake fluid on my Ford b max. Found a great little contraption which does the job of someone pressing the brake pedal without the worry of air getting into the system on the up travel of the pedal.
It's a Sealey VS820 that screws onto your brake reservoir. You manually pump it to the required pressure using the attached handle and then unscrew each wheel bleed valve until all the old fluid is out.
This job can cost upward of £200 at a garage or you can buy this thing and save yourself £150 less the cost of the fluid.

You can make a bleeding tool with a bit of narrow rubber fuel hose with a bolt shoved in the end and a short slit cut longways in the side just before the bolt. It works, it's what I used to use when I was a car tinkerer.
They used to market a similar gizmo.
You can also make one with a bit of hose and a screenwasher non-return valve.

I had a vehicularly amusing day the other weekend, finally having my "Star Cars" driving experience that Mrs. B bought me for Christmas,
It started with disappointment as the first car i chose was the General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard, but this was unwell and had to be left behind – even more sadly, most of the cars are replicas but the General Lee was one of the original cars used on the show and its boot lid has been signed by all the cast :( Still, there was another black Dodge Charger they use which is “Dom’s Charger” from the Fast and the Furious films, so I started off with that instead. This was hilarious as, despite having a 7 litre engine, it was comically slow, and also hot and very noisy as it had no internal soundproofing. In addition, the brakes were scary and the steering had huge amounts of play in it. However the noise it made was magnificent and I just laughed my way round the three laps – it was brilliant!
Next up was KITT from Knight Rider and this was excellent. He’s a replica and still a work in progress but the dashboard was correct and all lit up, and apparently he would talk, but the driver I was with wasnt his usual driver and he didn’t know how to do it, which was a bit sad. Still, I did my three laps and it felt great. As an aside this was a faster car and had brakes that actually did something, which was reassuring.
Then we came to number three – James Bond’s Aston Martin V8 Vantage. This was a hoot and took a bit of getting used to and some nagging from the female instructor as it took me a lap to remember I was no longer driving some dodgy old Yank tank – this thing went like stink and cornered on rails. I was able to come back and tell Mrs B, that, as she has always suspected, she’d love one and, yes, so would I! I’d found the best car of the day…
…Or so I thought. My final car was “Bumblebee” from Transformers, which is a modern Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which I chose as my ‘last choice’ purely because it has 600bhp. This was very civilised inside, comfortable and quiet but with a pleasingly distand ominous V8 rumble, until you floored the accelerator, when all hell broke loose, a vicious snarl erupted from under the bonnet and it felt like some giant rugby player had booted you at the horizon! I hung on for dear life for my three laps and concluded that I don’t want one of these – I NEED one! As you may have gathered, I loved every second, bought all my photos and in-car videos and chose my one official print to be me and KITT, obviously. I’ll definitely be going back for more, though, as I still can’t not do the General Lee.

Every day is 'track day' here on the local roads. Each night you can hear V8 Mercs and Beemers and a few Skylines howling around town. There have been some spectacular crashes. Funny thing is, you never see or hear a police car.
No wonder my car insurance is silly high.

Insurance companies clearly think your Suzuki is a threat to the Skylines and to public safety. If some scrote decided to nick it for a joyride it would end in carnage.
Oil and filter and pollen filter changed this evening, total cost £60, and that was using Mobil 1 oil.
Audi wanted £200 which is fair enough given their overheads.
Hang on though, it only took an hour and a bit so that’s a pretty good hourly rate :eyebrows:

Chatting with a customer's neighbour this morning, who has just taken delivery of a new Audi Q3 (folk love to talk about their new cars, I'm told) and I asked him about the engine badge on the rear: "4.0 TFSI, blimey that's a big engine, I bet it's a bit rapid". He told me it makes 190bhp and is actually 2 litre. He said something about them preparing for electric/hybrid engines, but my eyes were staring to glaze over, as his tech talk wasn't nearly as interesting as his car, and I have a really short attention span when mealtimes are approaching.
Does this misleading engine badge make sense to anyone?

My brother had a new Q5 briefly. A burst tyre in rural France left him stranded for ages. The puncture repair 'goo' and air pump supplied were useless. He sold the car in disgust!

No, it doesn’t. The 50 TDI is a 3 litre! Worst marketing decision since they changed Coco Pops to Choco Crispies.
Of course neither of these are as bad as what they’ve done to the taste of them.

A friend of my brother's bought a Bentley Continental GT a few years ago, and it cost him about 150 grand. One day he got a flat tyre, and was unable to find the spare wheel. So he phoned Bentley Service, enquiring as to its whereabouts, and after many audible clicks on a keyboard, the nice lady informed him that he'd not chosen the £3,000 spare wheel option.
This was a shrewd, canny Scottish owner of a multi million pound company employing about a hundred people. Surprising really that he was happy to face the ridicule he rightly received. :D

Apparently a bit of wood under half the tyre longways with the nuts lightly tightened and the car dropped onto it sorts this out but made me think even if I had the space saver I wouldn't have been able to put it on.

Both very valid points. 18” alloys with 235 or whatever tyres are not light and easy to move about unless you’re able bodied and used to doing it. My wheels were also stuck to the hubs when I went to change the brakes recently . Thrashed them from behind with a 3lb rubber mallet but not exactly possible at the road side. Good idea about lowering on the jack.

Nope. I miss the days when you instantly knew the engine size of a Merc or BMW by the last two digits of the model number. That way, you could nod deferentially at a 540i as it passed by, and laugh at the de-badged one knowing it was almost certainly a 518!
Trouble is, now car makers have just settled on one engine size in differing states of tune with various numbers of turbos bolted on, I suppose they’ve had to make some other system up - 90% of C-Classes would be ‘C200’ otherwise!

The Saab 9-3 1.8t was a 2 litre turbo detuned to 150bhp whereas the 1.8i was actually a 1.8 normally aspirated.
Go figure?

Had the car out for its first good run since changing the oil to Mobil 1. I'm impressed with it. There's always an improvement in how an engine runs after an oil change but this definitely feels "looser" and wants to run on further after lifting the throttle off which I take as a sign of reduced engine friction. Fuel economy was excellent too, showing high 50s mpg on the computer which is usually 3 or 4 mpg optimistic so probably a genuine 55 mpg taking it relatively easy.
Maybe the old oil just wasn't fantastic. It was Granville, same fully synth 5-30 VW 507.00 spec as the Mobil 1. Initially it seemed perky compared to what Audi had used previously but with almost 9K miles on it I felt the engine was getting noisy and gruff which isn't a lot of miles for a long life oil. Definitely much quieter and smoother now.
We'll see how long the Mobil feel good factor lasts.

No problem, just plug your laptop in and a couple of clicks will get you some bloke at the other side of the world, who has the correct feeler gauge :)
Wonder what the extra box on top of the air filter housing is for.
Maybe a two stage filter.
There was 2 fluid coolant bottles too. Tracing back one was for the invertor
Oh yes, see on at the front and one to the left hand side. Didn't realise the power electronics were liquid cooled. Out of warranty I expect cars like this could be a real liability. Wonder what it would cost to replace the batteries and associated electronics in the event of a major fault. Knowing Toyota though I imagine it's very well built and electrically protected. That engine bay is immaculate in its execution, how they design that is beyond me.

Does an interior light left on in a car normally run the battery down overnight?
Today I had to break into my car, setting off the alarm, as the remote keys didn't work. The garage I spoke to suggested that an interior light had been left on, but I wouldn't expect that to run the battery down overnight.
The problem with the car seems to be due to a badly fitting rear boot lid in a Toyota Prius - the catch doesn't always work well. However, I still wouldn't have expected a problem within 12 hours - so is the 12V starter battery also now at end of life?

If it was only a single 5 watt boot lamp it shouldn't have flattened a good battery but if all the interior lights were on it's possible.
I'd say if your battery is more than 4 or 5 years old it's probably down on performance by a noticeable amount as these types of cars use the stop-start system all the time which reduces battery life.
If you'd done a few short journeys or used the start-stop system a lot just prior to leaving the boot light on all night it may just have been the last straw on the camel's back.

if unable to start at all then, by using a car battery charger - you need to disconnect the positive lead of the battery, normally connecting to the car whilst charging with a external charger ,
and leave charging for approximately 15 hrs. Ideally the car battery should be removed whilst externally charging .
Your boot may also have a lamp that is On as a result of the boot not shutting. Two such lamps left on for 10 hrs would begin to challenge ability to reliably start the next day,
being approximately 1.5 amps of current draw -per hour over 10 hrs duration
just wonder if any perimeter lights might have been on too. but is suggests if that was the case that one small bulb did it your battery must have been nearly gone. might have been some other tho, so worth recharging battery carefully and then testing it
If it's a new car then it just may not crank at all below a certain voltage, the ECU will sense it and not allow it. A bulb discharging a battery that is not 100% already will do that.
You'll tell me its a 1998 Honda Legend now!

Such is the wonderful design of the car that although the generator will charge the battery, it will only do that if the car is actually driven! Normally that is what one wants, but under failure conditions one might want to simply rev the engine up for a while to get enough oomph to restart the car next time it is actually needed.
There is a jump start point which we now located under the RHS of the bonnet looking inwards. Alternatively the 12V battery is actually accessible from the rear if the covers and spare tyre are taken out. This is very hard to get at if the locks are stuffed because of the electric failure, and the alarm system is hard to get round. I don't actually know how we got the car unlocked. Initially there is a mechanical key, which opens the driver's door, but doing anything else sets off the alarm. I think we finally got into the other doors and the rear by repeated combinations of brute force and ignorance - a great deal of the latter.
I think the comment about stop start mode is not relevant, as my understanding is that this car uses complex electronics and a much larger batter pack once the initial kick start by the starter motor has taken place - but perhaps someone will correct me on this if I'm wrong.
The dealers I spoke to basically said the battery is underpowered with not enough capacity - you can substitute a less polite word if you wish - though normally should last 4-5 years. I checked with the garage that did the regular services, and there hasn't been a new battery since 2015 - and I'm not even sure if there was one then.
Although mostly I like the car, it's things like this that would deter me from buying another similar car from the same manufacturer - or if I do, I'll be doing so having weighed up the advantages versus the risks.
Currently completely electric cars seem to be on the ascendancy, though I still think they are overpriced. Car manufacturers always seem to have some way of trying to screw extra money out of punters - put in a few accessories (e.g. some form of stereo or surround sound system, perhaps costing a few £hundred, and then whack +£2k on the price.
Now it looks as though I really do need a new battery, and I've got to find a way to get the car to a suitable store or garage, and then hope that I can get the rear lock sorted ASAP. Hoping it doesn't die on me again in the process. Yuk!

Terrrible! Managed to get a new battery, after managing to drive it to a tyre depot. Seemed OK, went to shops, then drove home.
Within an hour or so the fault has returned. The only way back in now is to use the mechanical key, and set the alarm off.
Now tearing hair out!
Is the battery getting charged?

I do find that I have to shut my Prius boot lid quite 'positively' if that makes sense... I believe the 12v battery is a bit sensitive in the Prius, I've never had a problem though in over 3 years

Mine is now relatively old, and problems like this didn't start appearing for perhaps 4-5 years.
I would suggest that you do make sure the battery in the boot is changed after about 5 years. Garages and the people who work in them tend to use the word battery ambiguously - either because they know what they're talking about, or perhaps more often, because they don't (e.g. the sales people, the front desk service staff etc.). The Prius has a small conventional battery which is 12 Volts - and a very much larger battery pack which can generate high voltages, and which feeds into the engine power system and the electronic controls etc. Referring to "the battery" is thus ambiguous. The power battery pack is usually guaranteed for 8 years, and may cause problems after that and/or be expensive to replace.
Some of the people in breakdown services haven't a clue when trying to deal with cars like this - and one fears they might even try to open up panels which say things like DANGER - HIGH VOLTAGE on top of them.
Eventually all of the door catches may become problematic - but the boot lid one is very poor. Slamming it down hard usually works, but it is in itself a problem, and may cause other problems as a consequence.
One other quirk of the car is the "hand" brake - the foot pedal - and the way the car often rolls back a few inches when engaging/ disengaging it. If you ever park on even a slight hill make sure it's very firm - as the parking brake - the one on the dashboard - won't hold the car.
Despite some of the issues, I have mostly really liked this car, but if the problems persist, and are also present in newer models, I would think twice before buying another one, and would perhaps buy a fully electric car, or a plug-in hybrid car - but not necessarily a Toyota.
Now to recommence battle with the service garages and breakdown trucks .... Fun Day!
Ive a Toyota C-HR Hybrid. Its similar drivetrain i think although much improved on the old Prius, as indeed is the new Prius.
Electronic brake which is hydraulically operated by sound of it.
Not had any issues yet although its new(well 6months now amazingly). Have to say the engine has broken in nicely now and has much more grunt than it had new. Got a nice growl to it lol.
If i get another car after this i will certainly consider another hybrid or even a plugin .
Im very impressed overall with all the tech, although im glad i dont have to pay for any ongoing repairs if there are any.
Leasing i think is the way to go in future.

Ive a Toyota C-HR Hybrid. Its similar drivetrain i think although much improved on the old Prius, as indeed is the new Prius.
Electronic brake which is hydraulically operated by sound of it.
Not had any issues yet although its new(well 6months now amazingly). Have to say the engine has broken in nicely now and has much more grunt than it had new. Got a nice growl to it lol.
If i get another car after this i will certainly consider another hybrid or even a plugin .
Im very impressed overall with all the tech, although im glad i dont have to pay for any ongoing repairs if there are any.
Leasing i think is the way to go in future.Have you tried it in EVR mode? If so, how far does it go?
Re growl - really! I thought the whole point was that these cars are quiet - if you want a car with "growl" either buy a very expensive one (though some of those don't) or a cheap banger and bash a hole in the exhaust! Anti-social!
The most I ever got my older Prius to go in EVR mode was probably about 1/8th of a mile. The other thing I tried was to see how far/long it would go before the petrol engine kicked in - and on one occasion I actually got it up to almost 30 mph - maybe 26mph.
Just had a phone call re these cars, and it seems that if water gets into the boot area it can blitz the wiring causing problems of the type mentioned. There was certainly water in the boot - which surprised me yesterday - I wondered how it got there. Draining it was quite easy - there are two holes in the floor with covers. I suspect the water may have come in that way too!
It's probably worth checking for water in the boot area of these cars once a year at least - take everything out - the spare wheel - the tool tray etc. until you can see the floor underneath and make sure everything is dry.
yeah, it depends on what you have running in car and how hard you depress throttle, but a mile is about top unless freewheeling too.(its designed mainly for getting you out of your drive without awaking neighbours i think) The HV Battery isnt huge, so needs constant charging via, wheels turning, brakes on or engine. Still it can be pretty silent even with engine on.

The seals probably tire and compress. Worth replacing every few years I reckon, they won't be cheap though.
Seals should be cleaned regularly, as should the surface they bear against.
Yup, over time the rubber becomes a bit porous and absorbs water, then in winter freezes and thaws causing more damage. they can also get hard and brittle. Apply regularly some rubber sealant like Autoglym Rubber Care ... keeps them in good trim. Wont be an issue for a few years tho when car is new. As Geoff says they should be cleaned with car.

People started driving more aggressively, and manufacturers started making and selling more powerful cars. Now I’m struggling to keep up with most of the newer cars, and aggression continues. Speed limits. What are they? Many drivers now overtake me even if I’m above the speed limit.
I can go faster, and at times I’d love to do that, but that would be when I’d get caught, so would ultimately give little pleasure.
The real pain about faster cars plus aggressive driving is that whereas ten years ago there were gaps in traffic streams to pull into when joining a trunk road, now the clever dicks who drive keep speeding into them, thus making entering fast moving traffic streams difficult and/or hazardous.

I've found that in recent years it has actually become easier to pull out of a side road to join the traffic. Ten years ago everything was moving too fast, but these days the roads are so clogged that the traffic passes my side road at a snail's pace. Meaning that the drivers find avoiding eye contact with me difficult, and are a little more likely to be courteous.
This will never happen in That London though - those drivers are a caricature of everything that's wrong with modern driving standards :ner:
Contrary to popular opinion I find the drivers of vans to be the most courteous, unless it's because I'm in a van myself, and I'm actually in some secret club I'm unaware of :)

I’ve only had it 8 weeks but I’ve done a massive amount of what I call ‘maintenance’ work to it (because of my OCD & because I like things to be right). The E39s do have some weak points/Achilles heels, but they’re easy enough to sort. It’s had a full cooling system overhaul, full suspension overhaul (including ALL arms, drop links & OEM spec Sachs sport dampers & OEM BMW Mtec II springs), full braking overhaul (more aggressive grooved discs and Yellowstuff pads etc) and a change of alloys which are off the E38 7 series & E34 5 series to get the more aggressive offsets ;)
I love tinkering with my cars, it still needs a better stereo sorting & I’ll be looking into the exhaust next; fancying a nice but subtle stainless Schmiedmann twin exit back box :D

Sadly, it happens every year - yet still more newcomers enter. :confused: Every race I fear for Michael Dunlop - he's lost his uncle (Joey) father, (Robert) and brother (William) to road racing - how must that play with your mind? I love bike racing, but I do sometimes wonder if it should be consigned to the track only which is (relatively) safer. That said, the spectacle of whizzing past lamp posts and trees at 200mph is stunning to watch - and every rider has a choice to enter or not.

Very sad news about Daley. At least he died doing what he loved, but that's no consolation to his wife and kiddie.
Moto GP, WSB and other track riders are incredible talents, but these guys riding the island are really something else. When you have dry stone walls and road furniture whizzing past you at 200mph the steel nerve and sheer focus needed to stay aboard, let alone win, is imv bordering on superhuman.
I thought that Peter Hickman did a great job (almost 133mph) considering the lack of practice, the windy conditions and the fact that his bike was basically a shop bought engine and suspension.

Latest one month old Boxster T 718 borrowed for the day whist mine had new tyres and a service.
Nice. Flat 4 not so nice but it does have extra power which is always welcome. And better brakes as a result.
The flat 4 has been growing on me and with the exhaust kit isn't so bad.
I've put 80k miles on my Boxster 981 from brand new but it still feels great.
Sales rep reckons the flat 6 will return. Sales of 718 haven't been great because most reviews have slagged off the flat 4 I think. Hybrids are due soon.
If I am honest about it this 718 T, a stripped down version of the 718, is a better car than a basic 981 overall. The price has taken a turn for the worse, though.
A flat 6 with 300+ BHP would be better, I would say. This one is 300 BHP. A 981 Boxster S is better from memory of the three 981 S I have driven.
This one didn't have adaptive cruise which is essential. Mandatory in fact, for me. It did have a lot of the latest toys in, though.

It's a nightmare being short especially having short'ish legs when you are bike shopping....
The two Hornet's I owned I had to have the seat cut down on both of them so I could touch the floor.... the Guzzi was ok though...

The superchargers can wear, but they're easy to change. Otherwise they have no huge issues.
I'd go for it, mate - providing it ticks all the right boxes (don't need to tell you what those are) and you're reasonably confident of its (good) history. It'll be a nice thing to drive and might encourage you to get out more:)
As for this:

Too true - and I can attest to that! Although, mainly with my old one, not so much the Brabster. That's the problem though, a lot of folks buy Mercs, Beemers and Audis, because they're fundamentally nice cars and great to drive, but simply don't factor in the running costs and potential repair bills, which if something major goes wrong, can be huge!
My mate, who runs a professional car-tuning company and garage sees it all the time... Daft 'kids' (I mean those under 25) buying old/high-mileage 3-Series M Sport Beemers for what they think is a 'steal', just to drive around in to 'impress' their mates, then the likes of a turbo or the gearbox goes pop, and the game's a bogey because they simply can't afford to fix it!:doh:
So.... When buying second-hand Mercs, Beemers, and especially Audis, as their parts are often the dearest of the three, always keep a spare couple of grand in reserve, just for 'emergencies' and/or take out a good warranty (if you're not able to fix what's wrong yourself)! :exactly:

Lol... I'd only be like that if I knew the person concerned, and that they could take the banter! If it was a stranger, and their driving bored me and/or I felt that it was of a poor standard, or unsafe, then I'd likely say nothing (unless it was *really* bad), and simply not go in a car with them again.
However, life's too short to a) drive boring cars, and b) be in boring cars, driven by bad and/or boing drivers!:exactly:

Yeah I'd agree with the last bit. As for the first bit, Del generally just sits there and enjoys the ride. Like you've just touched upon however, I drive rather differently in the Brabster (and play music considerably louder, too) when I'm on my own or with mates, than when she's in the car - but she does like going quite fast in cars with (as she calls it) some "oomph":D

Test drove Tesla Model 3 Performance today. This exact one.
It's fast. Really fast. 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds. Believing that figure is easy when you slap your foot down at low speed. It's not so impressive when you do so at 60+ but it still moves.
It's really comfortable too. And it whilst it doesn't corner as.well as my Boxster and isn't as.much fun to drive, I am happy it is a great blend of compromises. Because, well, everything is a compromise.
I'm not a fan of its looks.

Not been in a Model 3 yet, but top model S was interesting. Whether we like it or not, this will be the future of "motoring". Not so worried about the electric powertrain (apart from the lack of engine note and range anxiety) but the inevitable arrival of automation and me not being allowed to stuff it into a tree on my own incompetence. I think the Teslas actually look quite nice, and I think the 3 is a 7 seater? (Looks a lot nicer than my wife's Qashqai +2 that's for sure.)

Played with auto steering but TBH it's a bit crap you might as well steer yourself as you have to keep your hands on the wheel. Also did auto lane change. Might as well do that yourself. But adaptive cruise is mandatory in any car these days for me and that works well.

Early days for electric cars yet. I've looked at parts prices for older hybrids and they are scary. If the electric motor in a Prius fails, the entire transaxle unit has to be replaced at a cost of thousands. The battery pack is similarly horrifyingly dear. Both have been known to fail.

yup at moment major parts are very expensive; probably why many are leased. as more get made tho the prices will fall. time being the hybrid is the safer route than a full electric, but a few years lots can change.

Funny you should say that. The same thought occured to me............seriously. I think we may see diesel hybrid trucks before long. They make sense as both electric and diesel produce good torque. Plain electric would be useless for long range haulage.

yup, like leasing, and thats what they are, leased, its replaced, serviced etc regularly, for a all in price. ok you dont have a car at end of it, but the way cars and regs are going that is probably going to be a bonus.

Should hopefully have the payout from my bike accident in a couple of weeks and have decided to not get another sports bike, but instead go for something a bit more sedate.
I've a feeling 125bhp vs the 190 i'm used to may be a problem at first, but at my age i really do need to slow down a bit. That said, after fitting a full Akrapovic system and a power commander, it should have a little more grunt.

I did consider the yellow paint with some nicer wheels, but i'm really not one to draw attention to myself on the road with a car that looks like its crashed through Halfords front window.

We purchased an A1 2 months ago, but only the 35 TFSI, and love it. We don`t do many miles and thought it adequate for our needs. It still has plenty of pep, 150 ps I think, so I`m sure you will enjoy yours.
Wish me luck (I think...) I have a very good friend who is in the classic car motor trade who will be proxy bidding for me tomorrow - if the car is as good as it looks. I fully don't expect to end up winning the auction at what I am prepared to spend, but if I do, it will be a bargain, and you never know...?

One of the rarest Mustangs outside of the Shelby versions - combines some of the looks, but with “normal” mechanics. Around 4,000 built in total, and will only go up in value. A pension fund you can polish and enjoy. :). But as I said, very unlikely to get it but then you never know.
VERY nice, proper engine. Nice to see a sorted Notchback, people seem to concentrate on the fastback but personally I prefer the notchback. Good luck matey.

Actually they were told to build Vauxhalls on a Vauxhall budget but they ignored that and carried on building Saabs. It was all going to end in tears one way or another.

And I bet the one that survived the longest was the Saab... The TR7 was a great looking car for the time, but really needed the rover V8 of the TR8. Capri would fetch a pretty penny now.

Not really. As Macca says they kept on building Saabs, and went bust. They used as little GM input as they could get away with. There's a famous story about how some hotshot from GM came to be an internal consultant on what was going wrong in Trolhattan, and got in a Saab as a hire car at the Airport. First thing he spotted was that it had a non-GM sat nav - Saab's design team had rejected the GM kit as not fit for purpose and gone off and ordered their own, short run, custom system at great expense, as in the old days. Mutiply that across multiple sub systems and it's pretty obvious what went wrong for them.
I had 10 Saabs in a row over a period of 25 years, the last being a 2009 9-5 Aero Anniversary Wagon. (Probably my favourite was a 9000 Griffin 2.3T, which on Millennium night - pre speed cameras everywhere and with cops having a night off after the world didn't end the night before, and the rest of the country nursing a hangover - took me from Glasgow to Weston Super Mare, south of Bristol, in four hours and 10 minutes including a petrol stop on the M5 at Dursley).
I would happily have bought the all-new 9-5 that came after my last one, but it didn't last long enough. Already there are shortage of parts even for cars like my old one that were quite old models, never mind the short-lived later model. But I would love to drive Saab again, I tried Lexus, have a Jag XF at the minute but neither have the originality or design flair of the old Saabs. (I'd certainly never buy anything from Germany).
I did visit Trolhattan, as a young journalist, in fact I used to write a motoring column for a Sunday newspaper back in another lifetime. (The 80s). Indeed that was what persuaded me to start driving Saabs in the first place and stop driving the Citroens or Alfa Romeos I had been mucking about with. Most car companies sent nubile young marketing ladies to entertain us over dinner. Saab sent their engineers who spent the evening drawing diagrams of anti lock braking systems on the back of napkins. Very refreshing. I'll never forget getting taken out the following morning on a forest rally stage by a very tall but rather bent and arthritic old bloke, who had to fold himself into the car that was being launched (facelift 9000 turbo if I recall correctly), and who then drove with utter calmness at speeds that felt more like we were in a jet fighter. His name: Eric Carlsson.

Mine is based on the Cavalier platform but Saab changed it so much there are virtually no common parts, even track and wheelbase is different.
From memory the brakes are interchangeable and a few suspension parts, oh and the outside temperature sensor lol

Saw a mint condition Supra on the way to work this morning. 'P' reg. Must be worth a few quid. Surprised he was driving it about in rush hour in the rain.
Amazing collection - is it a private one? Struggling to find much online about it.
Agree on the Lambretta, though I was a Vespa lad myself. Loved the Opel GT - they were a "Mini Corvette" - designed by the same guy I think. Looks like the only Ferrari they've got is that 308 GTS? Surprised only the one, given how many Porsche & Jags. Still a very nice collection, and thanks for sharing. :)

As long as I avoid driving on certain side streets with speed bumps (usually those surrounding chav council-estates), I don't have that issue here with the Brabster, and it's a lot lower than that ST! I guess it depends where you live and how you use a car:)

Apparently, it has 85 ECUs in it... :eek: I deliberately chose my 1991 200Tdi 110 because it was the last Defender to have absolutely no electronics in it (not even ABS) because of LR's electronic reliability... Can't imagine the new ones being "fiddled with" by home "mechanics" like the old, but everything progresses. I wonder if the thousands of nay sayers on t'internet have no central heating in their houses, somehow managed to get their Sinclair Spectrum to connect to the internet, only watch 3 TV channels on a black and white CRT television and still carry a bag of 10ps and 2ps for the phone box ‘cos owning a mobile phone isn’t like "the good old days?" :D

Aside from the ride, precisely the opposite is true. And it only looks chav on a 'chavvy' type of car (Citroen Saxos and other shite like that), when the chav owner's doing things incorrectly and on the cheap. It's even worse when said cars have been 'slammed':doh:
But lowered sports suspension, done right on a Ford ST, provided that the rest of the car has been modded to suit, no - unless where Gary lives out 'in the sticks' there are loads of speed bumps!!:D
