With summer round the corner, decided to lose the Winter tyres on the Brera and get her Summer boots on.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4s

The improvement in grip, noise and ride comfort is terrific, reckon these are the best tyres I've used?

The cars got great 'stance' and I love the look of the wheels, but felt they were recessed in the arches a bit?

Fixed that by fitting 20mm Eibach hubcentric wheel spacers, brought the wheels out to better fill the arches.
Way better now, much happier with how the car looks. The wider stance just brings out more 'Alfa' in how it looks.

Happy days.

Ongoing battery issues. Was going to take greenery to the dump a couple of days back in the remaining petrol vehicle, but it wouldn't go - poor thing. I think the boot catch maybe didn't engage properly, so the battery ran down - not sure why.
It was so sick it that the wing mirrors wouldn't even go in, and trying to get into the car set the alarm off, which probably pleased the neighbours at 10.30pm. Charging over night the following day seemed to fix it - though I still set the alarm off getting into it to get the battery connected to the charger, but it sounded quite healthy after a decent charge.

I probably ought to check it again. Maybe the battery really is on its last legs. Mrs d keeps suggesting that we sell it, but we wouldn't get much for it, even though it's in nice condition and goes well. Such is the way of the world.
Perhaps I'm being too cautious in keeping it, but my point is that if anything fails with the EVs we'll be stuffed, plus also if we ever have pleasant enough weather to drive around with the roof down, that's the car to use.

I may actually get round to asking some audio related questions in a day or two - for example concerning the newer (and trendier?) range of speakers - such as the KEF LS50s.

Any joking apart what car was it for and what's 'sophisticated' about it?

Marco
04-06-2021, 22:09
Probably due to 'stop/start' technology, [see link below] which requires a more sophisticated/heavy duty battery (AGM), facilitating the plethora of electronics needing powered in modern cars (I believe Barry has an Audi A1).

https://www.oaks-services.co.uk/news/whats-the-difference-between-a-stop-start-battery-a-normal-battery/

The last battery for the Brabster was just shy of £300, but that's for a 3.5L engine, with lots of current-demanding stuff attached to it. This is what's fitted in my car: https://www.varta-automotive.com/en-gb/products/varta-silver-dynamic-agm which I suspect will be similar to what's in Barry's.

Yes, that's more or less what the AA man said, though I wasn't really taking it all in at the time. My Audi does seem to have a lot of current consuming "bells and whistles" on it which need powering: sat-nav; air-con; heated seats; electric sun roof, plus the usual radio and CD player.

Like yours the new battery is made by Varta, and replaced the original, which would have been 9 years old. I was amused to see the AA engineer had to 'tell' the car (by plugging in some sort of gizmo under the dash), that the battery had been changed.

Exactly this. If your car has all the gizmos that are fitted these days, and especially if it has stop/start technology, AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) is the way to go. But they do cost upwards of £250. Older low-tech cars don't really need this, and a regular acid-flooded battery is fine and should come in under £100. But you do get what you pay for - get a good 'un and forget it :)

Yups... Interestingly though, the Brabster is late 2008 and was still fitted with an AGM [that's the battery it came with], thus what I've always replaced. I wonder how much older or 'low-tech' a car would have to be, in order for it to be as you say?:hmm::)

Certainly, cars are much more hi-tech now than they were in 2008..

I believe the AGM technology was developed in the 40's for military applications, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Brabster had one as OEM. Mercedes do like to 'over engineer' imo, it's one of the things that make them fab :)

Yes, the Ferrari's a very sexy car, but ultimately, if I had the choice, and when push came to shove, my love of American muscle cars would likely lead me to the Mustang, but ONLY in brutal (matt) black!:D

Although the two Astons would push it close...

Seeing those wire wheels with the hammer lugs on the hub, reminded me of my late father's Daimler V8. Deep blue with wire wheels, it turned heads - but the wheels were a bit of a bugger to clean.

It was an automatic, so had a 'bench' seat at the front. But it was the first of a run of Daimlers and Jaguars he drove. His final car was a Daimler 'Double Six' 5.3 litre V12.

Again an automatic with leather seats, power steering, and by then air-con, it was extremely heavy on petrol. There was a display on the dash, which gave you the 'real time' MPG you were achieving. Up hill it would in single figures, down hill it would be something like 25 mpg!

That said it was a very nice car to drive, but would have been too expensive for me to run, and maintain. The tyres were about £100 apiece, and that was twenty years ago.

It looked like this (same colour, but the wheels were different):

I was never sure that our home charging unit (BP Chargemaster) was working properly, but now it's gone off completely. Real bummer since the council started charging for top ups in the local town.

Trying to get someone to come and repair or replace it turns out to be non trivial too. So with service levels like this why should I bother to recommend EVs to anyone? It's a pity - as I do think electric vehicles are almost certainly the way to go, unless hydrogen can be made viable

On a good day EVs are good, and we recently did a round trip of slightly under 1000 miles with relatively few problems. One stupid thing - supposedly one can do other things whiie EVs are charging, but that doesn't always work out too well - depending on how fast the public chargers are. The Tesla chargers are really fast, so there's only just enough time to go for a pee - which could be at times be useful. Unfortunately the Perth and Kinross council have decided that they can't afford to keep the bog open at the Broxden charger location, which is really not at all helpful.

Charging times need to be matched to activities which are feasible at each location, so chargers close to supermarkets and shopping centres might be sensible, as also destination chargers at hotels and B&Bs.

There's a complete lack of joined up thinking about service provision - but then that's nothing new, is it? This is the UK, after all.

It's not only the infrastructure roll out which is a problem, but a lack of sensible technical support for chargers. Maybe BP have a subversive interest in making sure that their home chargers don't work properly! Totally useless customer service - we've been waiting two days for the service company to get back to us - despite promising that they would within 48 hours, and today after a reminder, assuring us that we'd hear from them by 5pm - which was over 30 minutes ago. Probably won't hear until the middle of next week - and yes - I have checked several times that the charger unit is not responding to reboots etc. Perhaps we should ask for £100 or more of free charging to compensate for the inconvenience.

I have also escalated the issue back to Arnold Clark Renault who sold us the car and the charger was included as an enticement to buy - but no response from them either. Not much point in having freebies from sellers if they don't work, eh! Everyone is going to pass the buck - "not my fault, gov!"

My next car will burn fossils. There's still no genuinely useable alternative. There ought to be a useable alternative, and gas guzzling cars should be restricted. However more attention should be paid to domestic heating and industry - which are still major users of fossil fuels.

I would hope that if you buy a car in a few years time that EVs would be more attractive. Things aren't all bad. EVs are beautifully quiet, and there are no fumes from petrol or diesel. When things work the running costs are relatively low - our recent trip cost around £20, but with a petrol vehicle it would have been over £100. However, we'd have to do a lot of miles to "recover" the additional cost of the EVs over petrol, diesel or other hybrids.

Plugin hybrids might still be a reasonable compromise - though I'm not sure that they are going to be allowed - and they do need to have a better everyday range. Most give out at around 30 miles.

However it does seem that Tesla are the ones who are able to provide decent infrastructure. Chargeplace Scotland appears to be run by some who couldn't do a booze up in a brewery.

I think I'll run our Peugeot out to make sure the brakes haven't rusted up - so far I think keeping it as a backup has made a lot of sense - though we don't use it much and it's a pain having to keep charging the battery up as it doesn't get as many runs as it used to.

Threaten to remove their crappy yellow sticker from your back window - they don't like that, and it may sting them into action. But if you do try to move the sticker be prepared for some hard graft, those bastards are stuck like shit to a blanket.

Nothing I've seen in these pages have made me think EVs are a good thing, so when they become compulsory I'll be making use of my bus pass and using supermarket deliveries.

The government are just empty-headed dreamers, thinking it'll all just fall into place. Given that EVs in their current guise have been around for 13 years now, and really haven't taken much of the market at all, trying to get it all done and dusted by 2030 is nothing short of daydreaming.

The biggest problem is in the cities. There are millions of vehicles that are parked randomly on the streets nowhere near the owner's property, each of those will need a charging point, so that means every point will need the ability to attribute the cost to the correct person. Then there's the installation of 40 million charging points, the cabling alone would run into millions of miles.

Then there's the hook up cabling for each vehicle. All over the pavements would be trailing cables, getting tangled up with pushchairs and pensioners (people are always inconsiderate when it comes to tidiness off their property). Inevitably as the cost of copper skyrockets due to the amount required for all this cabling, the theft of cables would be exceptionally prevalent. So then an infrastructure would be necessary for repairs and replacements - but already as Dave has mentioned, it seems to be very troublesome to get a charger repaired already, and this is when the market should be shit hot and proactive in order to promote sales.

Whilst in essence I do believe EVs are excellent; economical, ecological and let's face it, fast, to get the whole country buying only EVs in 2030 is a joke. As most cars have a life of 10-15 years, the expectation is that almost all vehicles will be EVs by 2045, so the entire infrastructure has to be installed, reliable, working and without fault by then. It essentially has to be as reliable as an IC engine and a petrol station - which is a hard act to follow as frankly a modern car is a well polished tool.

No the government are cynics, that's why the target dates for these things are always years in the future. They set that target date because they know in all likelihood it will be some other administration's problem by the time it comes around.

In the meantime if questioned about their 'green credentials' they can say 'well look, we've set a target date, what more do you want?'

The empty headed dreamers are the ones who think it is somehow possible to combine a consumer economy and lifestyle with some sort of zero-pollution, eco-friendly, rural idyll when the two are mutually excusive. The real choice is to either say fuck it and carry on as we are, or go back to living in the bushes and eating berries and nuts.

Then there's the installation of 40 million charging points, the cabling alone would run into millions of miles. Why would 40 million charging points be required? That would assume perhaps a 1:1 ratio between vehicles and chargers. Many people would have chargers at home ( - but consider the reliability ..... !!!) which typically require no more than 15 metres of cable from the consumer unit to the charger, plus maybe another 3-5 metres to attach to the vehicle. That's about 80 times less cable than you have thought. That's also assuming that many people are still going to commute into cities - which happens in some - but is totally bonkers for cities like London, where many people use public transport.

Dedicated areas for charging would be required which would reduce some of the issues re pushchairs and pensioners. These would probably be on the sites of existing petrol stations. Re stealing cables - yes - it probably will happen, though perhaps the hazards of taking cables while live would deter some. Idiots like the ones who try to bring down overhead railway cables or even high voltage grid cables can try to reach gold status in the Darwin awards.

It essentially had to be as reliable as an IC engine and a petrol station - which is a hard act to follow as frankly a modern car is a well polished tool.Reliability of EVs is yet to be tested - though I think they are reliable. Public charger reliability I'd put at lower than 50% currently, with some out of action, and many different types with next to no instructions or contact details as to how to use them. Even simple things like making sure that the displays are visible aren't dealt with. On dark days it is possible to read the instructions off the displays, but on sunny days those are completely unreadable. What is wrong with having printed instructions attached to the chargers? Oh - yes - I suppose one has to know all the variants and do searches on mobile phones for the instructions of the more esoteric ones. Then there are units which have to have an emergency reset button pressed to kick them back into life each time - something not known by every driver. Not a good thing. Some units have plug ends which are locked in, and getting them released can be tricky. Sometimes it's brute force, sometimes there are hidden buttons to press, and sometimes the locks are released by a key code or card action. One gradually builds experience of these - but it's basically pathetic.

Our Zoe recently had an annual "service" - cost about £120. What on earth was done? The only identifiable change was a new filter - cost about £20. No itemised invoice detail of what was done, or what checks were carried out. Not even a report on the brakes which is something which could wear or require adjustment. Oiling? Not sure. It did require an adjustment to a seat a little while back, as it was making a squeaky noise.

The Model 3 has not had any service at a depot, but has had to be reset a few times. It's still a love/hate car. At its best it's really lovely.

To answer the 40 million chargers question...

Homes
Workplaces
Hotels
Holiday lets
Car parks
Roadside parking
Service stations
Supermarkets

All these places need chargers, and really at home it's one per vehicle as most will need charging simultaneously. It's no good having one charger for multiple vehicles.

In the three houses next to and opposite mine, and including mine too, there are eleven cars, with more to come as kids grow up. Multiply that over just the households in the UK as at this year (let's assume 28,000,000): even if there are only an average of two cars per household, that's immediately 56,000,000 chargers, without the other places mentioned.

It'll need to be one serious network.

struth
26-06-2021, 09:40
yeah but very few folk will charge every night at home. still, there is about 25% of homes without off street parking. So thats a lot of other charging on street. Another issue will be sorting out who gets to use an on street or car park one. if you leave car and its charged, and you dont come back then no-one else can use it.
Then there is reliability, vandalism and theft of cables, which is apparently already quite high

Filterlab

But they will. If cars are in use every day then they need to be charged at night.

A mobile phone is a prime example. Think of one household trying to share one charger. Ain't going to happen, and phones are the pinnacle of battery technology.

On a daily basis, cars in the UK drive an average of 20 miles a day, 142 miles a week, 617 miles a month and 7,400 miles a year. At that level a charge will last all week for most cars. Obviously plenty will do more(and may be in the multi car households.) The power companies did state that cars plugged in during peak times may have their electricity removed from batteries to boost needs then topped back up later when power isnt being used.

why would you plug your car in if you didn't want to charge it up? That makes no sense.

There's already a demand problem when everyone goes to make a cup of tea at half-time, how will it work when everyone is charging their car in the evening, which is the same as everyone boiling ten kettles each, all at the same time, and for most of the night?

I'm not disagreeing that 40 million (or more) chargers might be "required" - just that that doesn't equate to 40 million miles of cable.

Having one charger for multiple vehicles can be OK, as long as they don't all require a zero to full charge every day. It would, of course, be a bummer if several need charging at the same time, or if the charger becomes useless - as has ours currently - single point of failure - not good.
Public chargers can be a fall back, but they're not attractive if the cost per KwH pushes the price per mile closer to a fossil fuel car.

I'm not quite as pessimistic as Macca - things don't have to be all or nothing. The total UK energy bill should drop if EVs replace fossil fuel cars - but at the same time capacity for electricity production and distribution would have to be stepped up.

Another option is to reduce people's enthusiasm for sex, so that there are fewer people "requiring" all this activity.

Well you may plug it in to say charge it up in middle of night(these things have timers) or you may want it to heat car up in morning for you which it can do when plugged in and it wont impact on your charge status.
But if even you plug in at say 7pm to charge it, and say th grid is struggling it may snatch some of your power in battery, and then replace it later.
Certainly in winter you would likely want it plugged in in morning to heat seats and defrost etc.

Certainly in winter you would likely want it plugged in in morning to heat seats and defrost etc. There are tariffs which work if cars are plugged in for long periods - for example Octopus. In theory the deal is that they offer a low rate per KwH - in return for allowing the grid to suck back energy if other demand is high. The small print does have to be examined very carefully though, plus the cycling of the batteries is likely to reduce their effectiveness over time. Currently the evidence is that charging an EV purely for driving purposes doesn't cause unacceptably high battery degradation, but using car batteries as a reserve for the national grid will almost inevitably cause more rapid turn over of batteries - and at additional cost to their owners.

Depending on the small print and rates some of these "cheap" tariff deals are not actually competitive compared to the cheapest options, but of course YMMV. One deal requires a user to install a Tesla battery pack at home as well - but on investigation that turns out to be around a fifth of the capacity of an EV car battery (13-15kWh vs 75kWh estimated for a Tesla Model 3) - and at a cost of over £6k the marginal savings would take forever to recover the installation cost.

EVs and chargers do have timers, but they are not all very effective or sensible. I hear that some apps on mobile phones can work also - but that's introducing yet more complication. For example, on a Tesla it's possible to set a charge start time, but not an end time. Tesla argue that this doesn't matter as generally the charge can be fast enough that all or most of a charge can be done overnight in the off peak tariff period. That doesn't work if one is forced to use a very slow charger (so called "granny charger") which is where we are at at the moment because of the wall charger failure.

Another option which works for some cars - such as Teslas - is to eat out at a place which has a destination charger, so that one's car gets charged up while one is eating - and hopefully the cost of the charge will be absorbed in the cost of a meal. That doesn't necessarily work for other makes of car though, which one could argue gives Tesla a competitive advantage, or alternatively an unreasonable stranglehold on the EV distribution network.

I'm not pessimistic, just realistic. I like the idea, less pollution in the immediate environment and much less noise. But the idea that it's possible for everyone to have one is a pipe dream.

Also re the 'energy bill' - fossil fuel is cheap, it's the duty that makes petrol and diesel expensive. If everyone stopped using fossil fuels what's the drop in tax revenue going to be? Where will they make up the shortfall? Taxing electricity.

yeah, the tesla chargers seem to be the best(or quickest) and seem to be a decent networfk... Not available anyway on the mobility tho.. Ive pretty much decided to either keep one i have or just get an ice. cost will depend on which and what.. need to wait til q3 comes to see costs etc as they change regularly; bpth price and models(they are often models that are not shifting as quick)

why would you plug your car in if you didn't want to charge it up? That makes no sense.

There's already a demand problem when everyone goes to make a cup of tea at half-time, how will it work when everyone is charging their car in the evening, which is the same as everyone boiling ten kettles each, all at the same time, and for most of the night?

The electricity companies could invest in massive diesel generators to provide electricity for EVs during peak times. When all ICE vehicles are banned there should be plenty of fuel knocking about doing nothing. Or am I being naive? :)

It's helpful if you actually read rather than make up things and attribute them to me.I apologise - you did write 40 million charging points - also somewhat speculative, but the inference about millions of miles of extra cabling is very probably incorrect - unless you are considering other aspects. If 40 million chargers are actually "required" then it should be possible to do that with around one million or so miles of additional cable - maybe less.

Anyway just had an "interesting" discussion down at a charger which I found - possibly free. A couple turned up with a Zoe looking for a top up charge to get them to their destination. Turns out they intended to arrive in this area yesterday, but the cable they used to charge the car at their last stop would not release from the car, so they had to book a room and stay overnight. Not good!

It's very difficult to design 'city cars' to look stylish. Perhaps the Italians might be able to do it. But to have the ability to park in tight spaces and not take up too much space, they will all tend to to look squat and boxy - and hence ugly.

I'm surprised it doesn't have 'bumpers'. That's how the French park their cars in the Paris side streets - they see a possible space, bump gently into the car in front, pushing it forward a couple of inches, then reverse and do the same for the car behind, repeating the process until they have room to park.

Everything about the Citroen EV is designed to make it cheap to manufacture; identical doors; front and back panels essentially the same; and the lack of wheel trim. I would expect the interior to be equally Spartan. However I'm not sure if I would want to pay £5,000 for one.

If you've read what I've written here on the subject (many times), you'll know that we (as in my parents and I) only ate fish and chips once a week, on a Friday.

Sweets and other forms of sugary snacks or crisps, ice-cream, etc, were strictly controlled/rationed by my parents [as they didn't want me turning into a wee fatty, such as is sadly all too often seen now among youngsters], so I never binged on crap:)

As I've said before, all that stuff was to sell to Brits and make pots of dosh from, in order to send me to prep school and generally keep me in the manner I was accustomed to!:ner:;)

IMO Reliant Robin 3-wheelers, with the steered wheel at the front are always going to be less stable than designs having two wheels at the front. But I could prove to be wrong.

BTW I only cited the Messershmitt, in reply to Martin's comment about the Citroen looking like something out of an Orwellian nightmare. The Messershmitt was used in Terry Gilliam's film 'Brazil', which is set in a dystopian, Orwellian universe.

Agreed, these new checks are not clear, and is a warning of the possible consequences of a "cashless society". Eventually Banks will have total control over YOUR money. They already make a fortune by investing with, and loaning out, YOUR money.

In general I now tend to pay for everything with card as much as I can, but with the removal of external cash points and the closure of many banks is a sign of creeping control by the Banks over your financial affairs.

It doesn't help that the number of 'pay at counter' pumps have been reduced. I generally pay by cash or card in the kiosk.

i like to pay at the pump, because the pump is here in front of me, and the kiosk is all the way over there. If I go back to the old pay in kiosk I suppose the exercise will do me good.

Lol... Almost no-one pays at the pump here, certainly that I've seen. Not even sure if that facility is offered much in stations around here..:hmm: They're certainly all over the place abroad, but not really round here.

In any case, it's not something I'd ever use, same as self-service checkouts at supermarkets, which I similarly boycott, as I like to be SERVED, and indeed am paying for the privilege!

Therefore, in a petrol station, I want to go into the shop, hand over my card or cash/loyalty card, and let the ASSISTANT do the rest. There's also hardly ever anyone at the station I use, so it's not as if I have to wait in a queue, so feck yer pay at the pump pish:nono:

That might be fine where you live (where the most common mode of transport is still horse & cart, or a sheep with a saddle), but in the real world there are often queues in kiosks. So if you're so 'queue averse' your chosen payment method would be just plain wrong. I put the fuel in, pay the pump, and off I go. Zero queues. No masks. What could be simpler?

Perhaps you could tell us about the 'service' you expect (and receive) from the kiosk for your money :)

Lol - not standing at a pump, typing your bank details into a machine and having to negotiate various on-screen menus to make the payment), with someone glaring at you in the car behind (if the station is busy, as you say), wanting to use said pump to fill up? That would do my nut in:nono:

As I said, I'm not even sure there *exists* that facility in many stations here. However, now you've piqued my interest, I shall have a look next time!

And why does living in Wrexham not equate to 'the real world'? I wouldn't have thought that Preston, as a town, was much bigger?:)

Each to his or her own, I guess. I'm just against all this automated pish, as it puts people out of jobs.

Bring back the days when public car parks were staffed by a wee man in a hut you gave your money to, and he issued you your ticket, ditto toll booths in motorways, instead of dropping coins (which you've always got to make sure you have in advance:rolleyes:) into a box...

Is that *really* progress? Give me MANNED services, everyday, over any automated shite!

And at petrol stations, what about if, like me, you have a loyalty card, so is there a facility for swiping that as well as making payment - and if so, that's another thing to have to do while you're stood there..

The loyalty card thing at Texaco stations is important to me, as with 500 points I get a £5 voucher off fuel, and with the Brabster, that doesn't take long to accumulate!:D

That para in bold - wrong diddly wrong wrong! Here's how:

1. "Not standing at pump" - why, do Welsh pumps have seating?
2. "Typing your bank details" - a four digit pin number! Do you not do that when you pay by card in the kiosk? Or is one of the services your
kiosk assistant provide to key that in for you?
3. "Negotiating various on-screen menus to make the payment" - select a button "receipt wanted or not wanted"
4. "Someone glaring at you in the car behind (if it's busy)" - Since when did you care about that? And anyway, you go at off-peak times,
remember saying that?

You are right about one thing though, Preston and Wrecsam will be about the same size. But size isn't everything, as I'm sure plenty of women have told you :ner:

It must be crushing to be proven so wrong, so I'll throw you a not insignificant bone, a point I know you'll labour to death - pay at pump facilities is pretty much a supermarket thing :)

You still haven't told me about the services your kiosk assistant provides :eyebrows:

Hahaha - aye, nice big sofas, mate, and free beer! Lol, the point is, I like being SERVED by a human being and don't want to be standing fiddling with cards and PIN numbers in the forecourt of a filling station. That's also why I *never* use ATMs in open public places...

Yes, there's another revelation! When I need cash, I use the ones inside the branch of my own bank, because when I conduct my financial business, I like some PRIVACY. I realise though it's difficult for you to fathom that, by stepping outside of the behaviour of today's masses, and so consider mine as weird, or perhaps even 'abnormal'.

No, as I always like to keep my tank topped up (don't leave it until it's nearly empty like you, lol) I rarely go above the £45 limit for contactless, so I type in hee-haw and the nice man, who always welcomes me when I come in (unlike a machine), as I'm a regular customer, swipes my loyalty card, and off I pop!

3. "Negotiating various on-screen menus to make the payment" - select a button "receipt wanted or not wanted"

N/A, as I wouldn't entertain it.

Yes of course, but I'm talking about if I were somewhere busier than Wrexham (I do manage to escape now and then, lol), and if I were faced with having to suffer that sort of pish. Marco.Depends what the jobs are. We used to have a great guy at our local railway station. He'd always try to find the cheapest combination of tickets if we asked him nicely - though probably the railway company didn't like him doing that. Eventually they decided that they only needed someone in the early morning, so I guess he was "retired".

Also if jobs are just a way to get dosh, then as many people don't actually like their jobs, cutting those back isn't necessarily a bad thing. Trouble is that the companies that run things don't want to emply people for just a few hours per day, and and also pay them enough to live on. It isn't the machines which are the problem, but the management attitudes which don't use both labour and equipment cooperatively and effectively.

"Del! Put down that Sudoku and keep your eyes peeled for a petrol station! The Brabster's tank has gone to three quarters full!"

"Seriously? It can't wait till we get back to Wrexham? It's got us to York and halfway back, surely we'll be ok?"

"Yeah but it might cost more than £45 to top up, and you know I hate touching those dirty Covid buttons! I only do contactless"

"Just put on those Marigolds I bought you for your birthday, and you'll be fine".

Sure, the answer is never black or white, one or the other [the lazy/easy, often cheapest option], but rather seeking to create the BEST of BOTH worlds, by providing manned and automated systems, facilitating the required demands of the public when needed.

However, unfortunately that rarely happens, and the decisions made don't centre around what's best for the customer, but rather what's best for the companies concerned and their shareholders. Of course, that wouldn't be the case if the customers voted with their feet and simply refused to comply, as profits would soon decrease, but the general public too easily acquiesce and accept new policies, rather than refusing them and fighting for what they want instead!

Everyone just falls into line like sheep, and so they get the 'progress' that they deserve...

Aside from jobs, dealing with less people and more machines, when conducting our daily lives, for me makes the whole experience more soulless, and simply serves to further dehumanise our society, which is becoming more devoid of human interaction everyday, to the point where the human race we've created is so painfully lacking in people skills, and with next to no personality.

The reality is, we're breeding robots now, not people, so heaven help us in future!

:lolsign:

If we're going on a long journey, we always fill up at our local Texaco station before we go (and a full tank in the Brabster is good for the best part of 600 miles), not only to avoid having to stop anywhere for fuel, but to ensure that the car runs on the fuel that it performs best on, and also to maximise our reward points.

Then when we return, the tank is immediately filled up at the same place. In that respect, there's been nothing else in it but Texaco Supreme diesel, since we took the car to Italy four years ago!:D

And so the only time the car runs on less than half a tank of fuel is when we're a long way from home, otherwise there's always at least that much in it or more. Btw, I also often pay by cash at filling stations, so no need to touch any buttons then either;)

Indeed, but it's usually quicker to use the ATMs, as there's invariably a queue to see the one (or maximum) two members of staff operating the counter, such as the times we're in now where machines are slowly (but surely) replacing people - and I've got my lunch to go back to!:D

Re. your comments about using ATMs in banks, instead of counter staff, this is what my previous post should have been replying to. We are all guilty of this to some degree. :( Don't forget to wave at Doris next time you're using their ATM, she won't be there much longer.

Same here, and my nearest RBS is Preston town centre, 10 miles away, so balls to that.

A couple of years ago, a customer paid me by cheque, and having no paying in book I had to go to the bank rather than Post office. 10 miles of diesel each way, and 2 quid for parking. for a sixty quid cheque.

Sat on the pavement outside the bank was a homeless dude with a dog on a string. I went across the road to the bakery and bought him a pie and a coffee (not giving him cash :nono:) which was another 3 quid. So about 20% of my cheque gone, along with two hours of my day.

I suspect the rising popularity of internet banking, along with branch closures, is driven not by customer preferences, but by corporate greed :( but what can you do? They're all the same, so voting with your feet isn't an option

son is with tsb. they just closed too. gonna have a pop up bank every now and then apparently. sad days but i suppose they are expensive to run... a web site is easier.I opened an account with the Coop. I expected a welcome pack through the post, telling me how to do the online banking. Nothing!

I phoned up and was told - oh - you just go online and get it set up. Download the app on your phone and you'll be good to go.

Totally useless, it was not easy - and basically didn't work, and now they have over £1000 of my money which I can't get at easily. I don't mind some online banking, but I do like the systems to work.

I'm not sure if there are any Coop branches in Scotland, so i may have to wait until I'm next time I'm somewhere in England to try to get this sorted.

The local TSB branch has closed - another nuisance, and Santander is somewhat variable. I'm not sure if I can still do the online stuff with them. It was working fine a couple of years ago with codes, but then they decided to change the interface and the login procedure.

As for systems which use 2nd factor authentication - total ***** nuisance.

Procedure:
1. Start to login on one machine.
2. Get a notification that there'll be a code on a mobile phone.
3. Find mobile phone
4. Get a notification that the code has now expired.
5. Try again on the first machine. Now code doesn't appear on mobile phone as lousy mobile phone signal.
6. Go into garden to find code.
7. Go back and enter code. Now the code has expired again.
8. As above steps 5-7 - but try to do it all quicker.
9. Give up - throw all the technology stuff into nearest dumpster!

Modifications of above:

3b: Charge up mobile phone

We're with the Nat West, which we can walk to in 10 mins, or drive to in 3 mins. We seem to be pretty fortunate living where we do, as whenever I hear of 'the effects of consumerism and/or commercialism having eroded the quality of life elsewhere, Wrexham is often blissfully exempt.

It's not perfect, although nowhere is, but all in all, it's a nice place to live, with pretty much everything you need on your doorstep, a good indoor market and still plenty of privately owned shops, owned by the same family for years:)

133.9 per litre locally, Tesco, Morrison’s, or there are a couple of BP places which are a couple of pence more expensive

Film? Strange time to be watching a film, mate:D

Anyway, hope you enjoyed it. Yeah, BP's always the dearest fuel. No idea why, but that's certainly been my experience. Texaco's not cheap either, especially the stuff I use, but as I hardly do any miles, especially now, price is a non-issue.

I put in just shy of £40, to top up the tank from just over half empty, and that'll do me for a least a month, often 6 weeks.

The station's bang in the middle of Wrexham town centre, and I've never seen it much busier, although I do go at off-peak times. However, if folks want to use supermarkets, and that keeps the station I use nice and quiet, then it suits me just fine!:eyebrows:

I also like, and very much value, the 'human touch', and being SERVED by someone with a friendly and cheery disposition, which of course is non-existent when serving yourself at the pump. It just makes the experience so much nicer, don't you think?:)

Especially when the world today is gradually being stripped of many forms of niceness - and you can enjoy these simple pleasures when you don't have to run around like a headless chicken, lol;)

saw a filling station in Liverpool at the weekend that's completely automated, no staff or kiosk at all. What used to be the kiosk is bricked up. Welcome to the future.

Exactly! Utterly dreadful... Well, I hope that 'the future' stays well away from here for as long as possible!!

:exactly:

if my car was a performance one i'd likely use a fancier fuel, but toyota say bog standard stuff is all it needs. the injection system adapts to what its burning, temp humidity etc.

I topped my car up a week back. I had to put over half a tankful in, so that was £17 quid's worth :).

That'll last me until autumn.
