That's the idea. There are places here that are damned difficult to find parking, not with this. Useful for cutting through traffic snarlups too and the 180mpg is handy.:)

Had cruise on my Skoda. Took a little getting used to, but once you get there, its pretty good. I used it without switching it off to go over to Fife. slowed down and accelerated with the stick and never touched the brake once. Got good mpg as well

Flippin' marvellous. On eBay, I order a screen for the bike from Germany. It arrives quickly, but has a small mounting part missing. The seller has good feedback, but after two days, has not replied to my message with photos showing what I need. Just sent another message, with my simple German translation this time. Might work. I can manage without the part. A cheap 'P' clip will do, but that's not the point. Probably punishing me over Brexit!

The Brabster's going into the garage today for a full performance remap, in conjunction with fitting a new Longlife stainless steel quad exhaust system, with 3.5 inch-wide tailpipes.

The brief is to create a nice 'growl' from the new exhaust system, noticeable mostly when accelerating hard, along with eking out maximum engine power/BHP. Should be fun!

Presumably the remap will be done after the exhaust is fitted. That's the best way.

Honda Innova. Very tidy and just over 4000 miles. They run like a Swiss watch. Quicker than you's expect too. Had one before.

It'll only get used occasionally. I anticipate these going up in value soon.

That'll take you around the world Geoff, and do it all over again without missing a beat!

Cheers, Geoff. Also getting an oil change done, and trying out some new stuff, after a good engine flush: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-867-motul-300v-power-racing-5w-30-racing-engine-oil.aspx

I've fancied trying it for a while, and was waiting until the next oil change was due. Gets a good rep amongst enthusiasts using cars with high-performance engines. After the remap, I'm aimimg for around 320bhp :)

Btw, just out of curiosity, what's your reasoning for doing the exhaust first and the remap later?

Any changes to exhaust systems has an impact on the engine's behaviour, so the remap will be better set up for the car if done after.

It gets quite tiring.

I had a longlife exhaust fitted to a previous diesel car (306DTurbo) as it was cheaper than the mild steel versions I could buy from tyre/exhaust centres. Did not go for the "loud" option though. Having the Caterham on a side exit exhaust is enough.

Marco

Nah, it won't be like that. The idea is that the 'exhaust note' will be heard mainly when the engine is revved hard or idling (in that instance a low-note 'burble'). I've asked him, if he has time, to record a video when he's happy with the install, and email it to me with the engine is being revved, which if he does, I'll post here for your delectation :)

No worries. It defo makes sense doing it that way. He's essentially been told to max-out the car's engine performance/BHP, as far as is possible, so it'll be interesting what that achieves (with the remap and new exhaust system) compared with how things are now with the Brabus D6 tuning chip :)

The old exhaust system was overall of a smaller diameter, had narrower tips, and he also mentioned something about there being dual-catalytic converters installed (instead of a DPF), so he's going to do something to take away/minimise that restriction (thus reducing turbo lag, etc), whilst keeping things within compliance.

I'm expecting the end result to be noticeably better, and if it is, the sale of the tuning box and existing exhaust system will pretty much pay for the work that's being done! I like win-wins

Absolutely! Not entirely relevant, but the amount of people I've seen ditch the standard exhaust including the cats (petrol turbo cars) and not get it mapped immediately then wonder why the engine let go. A lot of standard mapped ECUs don't have wide enough parameters to cope and run lean as hell and there's only one thing going to happen in that situation :deceased:

walpurgis
18-07-2016, 16:48
Yeah. I tended to run lean on tuned engines back in the days of carbs, to get the top end revving out well and I burned out a few exhaust valves here and there. Mind you, it only took me an hour or so to change one. Nearly every change of exhaust manifold or silencers meant a retune. A mistake people make is to want big bore exhausts, often killing the performance, due to lost gas velocity.

Justjon
18-07-2016, 16:59
Very true, although back pressure on (petrol) big turbo cars isn't overly desirable.
Also seeing people fitting bigger injectors was fairly amusing when not mapped. Lots of unburnt fuel, flames, bore wash then bang.

Let's just say that car, engine aside, LOOKS almost identical.... Yes, of course a V8 petrol is going to sound different from a V6 diesel, but I've also heard big quad exhaust-equipped V6 diesels, and some of them sound almost as brutal, but with a somewhat 'deeper tone' ;)

Indeed... But you can see where I'm coming from :)

With the Brabus R6 chip, exhaust and wheels removed, what bits of the Brabus fitted parts are left?

Lol.... Yes, it's becoming more 'Marco pimped', than Brabus, but that doesn't bother me, as I'm customising the car the way *I* want it - and it's fun to experiment!

However, there's still a shedload of Brabus bits remaining, mostly now within the car's interior, such as the bespoke Brabus steering wheel, brake and handbrake pedals and accelerator, gearstick, mats, interior blue-illuminated stainless steel door foot-plates, door-locking fobs, and a few other things.

The lowered sports suspension is also a Brabus addition, along with the body kit and LED illuminated under-panels, which shine five 'circles' of white light (per side) onto the road, when the doors are opened (looks quite cool at night)

The next addition will be a motorised tinted (panoramic) sun roof...

A bit too 'spitty' for me... Couldn't be doing with that, or the constant 'drone'.

The idea with mine is that the noise 'disappears' during normal running on dual carriageways/motorways, etc, and is only really noticeable when starting off and/or accelerating hard :)

Other car is a wagon I use for daily commuting, fishing trips and even a trip to Saint Tropez; would love to have been able to take the Porsche there as there were some fantastic scenic roads but the womans luggage allowance made it impossible.

Marco
20-07-2016, 11:35
Just tell her to take less stuff! ;)

I must admit when we take the car abroad, we travel as lightly as possible, as the more room there is for us, the more comfortable the journey there will be, plus the more stuff (wine and food) we'll be able to bring back to enjoy at home, which is our main reason for making the trip in the first place - and why (along with the freedom having a car gives) I hate using planes.... :)

It's also why the Brabster was bought to fulfil two main purposes: a comfortable, reasonably spacious and economic car to drive long distances in, especially abroad, and also one that's fast enough to have some damn good FUN in when the opportunity arises!! :D

The Porschey looks fab from the back, btw!

Sorry, I couldn't watch it all, I quickly got bored.

For me fun driving is nice windy roads, or even better some track action. I haven't yet dare take the Porsche on the track though; it's too quick and too expensive (for me) to risk it.

I'd love a little cheap and cheerful track car such as an old MX5 just to play around in. In my opinion anyone would have far more fun with this than driving fast in a straight line in a big powerful automatic saloon.

Marco
21-07-2016, 18:45
Yeah, I know what you mean about getting bored...

For me it's just good to see some people having a bit of FUN, driving a fast car (on a nice, empty road), which puts a SMILE on their faces, rather than the opposite, and that happens so often here in the UK, with folk trundling around in boring nondescript, homogenised boxes on crowded roads, with no PASSION for driving whatsoever, and almost no SENSE OF FUN...

Do you know what I mean? :)

Too many folk here buy cars out of necessity, and have no real love of driving - and I like seeing evidence of the opposite! :exactly:

I think it just depends on how your brain is 'wired' :)

A good example is your nice BMW estate car, which one could argue is 'all I'd need' (or something like it) for food and wine buying trips abroad - loads of space and a nice comfortable ride.... However, I just need to have that extra 'fun factor', which the Brabster brings to the party, and the 'poke' on tap, to take advantage of on those lovely straight French roads! :eyebrows:

Done just under 400 miles yesterday from Disneyland Paris to the coast in Vendee. Great to cover long distances at a good speed. The 3 lane toll roads are great but 40 euro each way!

Kudos to the new Skoda Superb, we hadn't an ache or pain between the 4 of us and we got 53 mpg despite cruising at 90mph the whole way where possible.

Adaptive cruise control was excellent and the sat nav rerouted us twice to avoid traffic jam and road closure which helped.

A history of the land speed record. Was shown on TV a while back, but well worth another look. I really enjoyed it. Especially with the sound up and using full screen.

Having suffered way too many annoying scrapes and dents with previous cars in London I now do without whilst one of these (apologies for the promo shot, never bothered taking any) resides in an climate controlled garage in what used to be the family home, now mine , in the Lake District. Only managed to take her out for a spin on a handfull of occasions thus far.

The Brabster's going like a bomb now, since its remap and new performance quad exhaust system - quite amazing what Kevin (my mechanic) has gotten out of the engine, in terms of torque and power curves

Quad exhaust? So you have 1.5 cylinders per pipe?
Or do you mean a twin exhaust split into quad tail pipes?

Yes, I think so too. It's already quite subtly agressive, and the black wheels will work well with the black roof, mirrors and spoilers. Ws also considering whether a dark red wheel rim might look good.. hmm. Need to look at some colour charts

Vauxhall Agila 1.0, another useful motor. An absolute hoot to drive, feels and sounds like a 2CV.

Suzuki Alto SX 1.0. Bought new. Smooth, quiet and surprisingly quick, good handling too. Up for sale at the moment, I may change my mind, It's mint with 9k miles.

Guys, as previously discussed a while back, I've changed the old Brabus quad exhaust system for a bespoke-designed one from Longlife. See pics below.

This is a 'straight through' design (no back-box), with high-performance manifold and intake components, designed to maximise air-flow and significantly increase bhp:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/921/aXx9Qn.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/plaXx9Qnj)

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/924/OsG1hq.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/poOsG1hqj)

Apologies for the rather disturbing reflections of daftee-moi taking the pics in my dressing gown and slippers! :D

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/921/2i9SjD.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pl2i9SjDj)

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/921/30O7dX.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pl30O7dXj)

Before, as the car used to be, fitted with the Brabus exhaust system. You can see how much more the tailpipes protruded from the rear bumper, which for me just didn't look right (they were also the wrong shape):

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/924/pajrV5.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/popajrV5j)

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/923/zZ9Kg3.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pnzZ9Kg3j)

I'm sure you'll agree that the new (wider) tailpipes look much neater and just suit the car more. The increase in performance, from the new quad exhaust alone, including the upgrades to the intake system (and the nice 'growl' the engine makes now), is pretty amazing and rather more than I'd hoped for!

All in all, I'm very happy with the results

A bit of a strange one.

My Peugeot Partner 2.0 HDi broke down last week and had to be towed home. Luckily I was only four miles away. The RAC guy said he thought it was the injector pump and I could see what he meant. There was fuel up to the pump, but no further. The car started up briefly on a squirt of 'Easy Start', but would not even fire without.

I asked the local car repair guy (based 50 yards from me) to take a look . He wasn't free until today and managed to take a look at it this morning. After trying all sorts of methods, including firing up on 'East Start' again, he plugged a diagnostic device in, checked readings and said "have you got another key". I had and fetched it. Tried to start the car and it fired up straight away.

Seems the key I'd been using had lost or corrupted its memory. Never heard of that before. Weird! Everything else like the starter motor, windows and central locking worked OK with the suspect key and the battery in it is only six months old.

Anyway. I got off lightly, the mechanic didn't charge me (I know him well). I had visions of a bill for hundreds of pounds. Now oddly, the bad key is working again. Maybe it reset itself after the car was started? Blowed if I know.

SUVs do nothing for me, as I like to be low-down on the road (to experience a greater sense of speed), not high up.

Unless you need an off-roader or four-wheel drive for practical reasons, I simply don't see their point - and if I did need that, I'd buy something tried and tested, such as a Landie or Range Rover, not that blinged-up pretentious monstrosity!

They've ruined the styling of Range Rovers too. You'd have to get an older one unless you want something that looks like it has had a pallet load of bricks dropped on the rear roof section.

Yes, good chargers, I bought one a couple of years ago. Only trouble with these I believe, and common to a lot of intelligent chargers, is that they won't charge a completely flat battery.

I have a conventional charger bought from Lidl when they first started in this country, that will charge completely flat batteries.

Ive got an old one for that too. Its older than lidl too lol....but yes its a very good charger and tops up my battery well, as i do lots of stop start with lots of electrics being used but not getting charged as i dont go far so it gets charged a lot. 2000 miles, wow, so much! I did far less. In fact, when I settle some stuff, I may get rid of the car.

I also have a very old conventional charger, bought in Woolworths over 45 years ago, think it was made by Belling, would have to check.

Also have a Woolworths electric tyre pump / flashlight, bought about 40 years ago.

Both the above still work fine.

Its a big engine to start and everything is electric so uses juice. If i could afford a big battery i would have it but they are really expensive. And a top up now and then is no major thing .car is parked right next to back door or one of sheds that all have power.

They say things come in three's. I've just had the breakdown in my Peugeot. The tumble dryer packed up last week and I had to buy another. Now, I take the Vauxhall for a drive this morning and find none of the instruments work. Bugger!!

There's power at the instrument panel 'cos the warning lights etc. work. I had a flat battery the other day. I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it? Anyway, the friendly repair shop by me is going to have a look and do the MOT too as it's due.

Fuses in the fuse box are OK. Unless there's another tucked away under the dash. Might be a microprocessor somewhere that needs resetting.

In case anybody is wondering what the avatars are about. They are Bonneville Salt Flats land speed record attempt vehicles. Various categories obviously.

The favourite being Speed Demon which took the record for wheel driven piston engined cars in 2012 at 439mph. They say 'if something looks right, it is right' and this really looks right. It is a beautiful machine. Sounds amazing too.

Here's the video if anybody is interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoriCmQD5zY

I got off lightly with this.

The workshop took the dash apart and found a bad connection. The instruments are functioning OK again. The bill was £110 including the MOT. I had visions of a rebuilt instrument cluster being needed at a cost of hundreds of pounds.

Just a heads up for you guys who like to play around with performance fuels for your car, the new ones from BP (with ACTIVE cleaning technology) are rather good! Apparently, these fuels are all-new and different from those in the previous Ultimate range.

I've been using the diesel version in the Brabster for the last few weeks, and am definitely getting improved economy (clearly indicated by the car's trip computer) and increased performance, in terms of quicker acceleration and overall smoother running - highly recommended!

Details here, and also where your nearest garage is: http://www.bp.com/en_gb/on-the-road/united-kingdom/products-and-services/fuels/bp-ultimate-diesel-with-active-technology.html

Having some MTEC, drilled and grooved disc brakes (in plain 'silver' finish), fitted to the Brabster. See here and scroll down: http://www.mtecbrakes.com/

These will not only look fab, behind the black alloys, together with the bright-red callipers, and provide more secure braking, but are also 30% lighter than my current discs, thus reducing sprung weight and rotational mass on the wheels accordingly, which should further improve acceleration and fuel economy.

That was certainly the case when I moved from using standard alloy wheels to lightweight performance ones, from Mandrus. The cumulative effect of all these little tweaks defo adds up! :)

Also, my mechanic noticed that some of the polyurethane bushes, forming part of the Brabus sports suspension, were worn, which I could feel through the back end of the car when braking hard, so those will also be getting replaced with ones from Powerflex, thus maintaining the 'grip' and maximum road-holding potential of the car, especially when throwing it around tight corners at speed...

All good fun! I'll post some pics when the new discs have been fitted

Drilled discs are always best for performance cars, plus they look so much better when paired with nice 'open frame' alloys :)

The price of any Porsche parts is always silly, so you have my sympathies, but with a fast car, don't skimp on brakes!

Yes. I know. It may be legal, But having ridden bikes most of my life and not exactly hanging about doing so, there's no way I'm going to hurl myself round a blind bend at speed. You don't know when you'll come across a tail back, accident or broken down truck, etc., blocking the road. Trying to stop a bike from eighty or ninety miles an hour in a panic is no fun.

I fancy a bigger bike in my vehicle collection. This Suzuki GS500 may do. It's a bit overpriced, but it's a very tidy example with only 11k miles on.

http://i63.tinypic.com/4si1yo.png

Not the ultimate sports tool by any means, but quick enough for me and has nice light handling. Dead easy to maintain too.

It'll cruise at any speed up to 100mph, hit sixty in under 6 seconds and return about 75mpg.

Had one before, so I know what they're like. The previous one had a fairing.

Some company in the states was building bikes with 8 litre Dodge Viper engines, but the GS500 will do me just fine.

I don't want silly fast or big. I do want air cooled engine, easy maintenance, lowish weight, reasonably low seat and easy handling.

As long as I can leave four wheeled stuff behind, chuck it around bends confidently and cruise at say 80/85 mph, I'll be happy.

I'll likely only be doing about 1000 miles a year on it if I do buy it (got two cars and a small bike to use already).

Just tried the diesel version of this in the Brabster:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/aRoznj.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pmaRoznjj)

Details: http://torcoracefuel.net/pro-accelerator-info.html Diesel version here: http://www.nimbusmotorsport.com/ProdShop2.asp?id=9617

Adding half a bottle to a tank, which was three quarters full of my usual Shell V-Power Nitro+ diesel, I took the car onto the local dual carriageway, and on the entrance slip-road, which is a long straight incline, about 500M long, I accelerated hard and instantly noticed more 'shove', low-down in the rev range, and eagerness for the engine to pull harder. Acceleration seemed quicker and also more effortless.

Great fun... Driving further onto the dual carriageway, and putting my foot down on the straight and largely empty road in front of me, resulted in reaching the legal speed limit (70mph) notably quicker than I've ever managed it before, so adding this "race fuel concentrate" to the car's fuel system really does put a tiger in your tank!:eyebrows:

I intend to continue using the Torco for the next few months and see if I can notice any further longer-lasting benefits. Highly recommended for car enthusiasts keen on releasing maximum performance/latent potential from their engines

Geoff you really should also consider the Honda Hornet 600... the 'S' version has a small fairing which keeps the worst of the wind off as well

I know it's not air cooled but they are such a hoot to ride. I've had 2 of them and they are just lovely. They have a fairly low seat height but, of course, I needed it even lower so had the seat cut down as I'm such a short a**e

Geoff you really should also consider the Honda Hornet 600.

I have considered the Hornet Bev, but it's not what I want. It's not huge, but is a bit of a lump compared to the GS500. I'd sooner have the more compact Suzuki SV650 for the same sort money, but the simplicity of the GS500 appeals more. I can maintain it myself without any headaches, 'cos it's dead easy to work on and it's quick enough for my needs. I've had one before.

Yes, but both are bulkier, heavier, taller and uglier than the GS500. They have water cooling too, which I don't want.

The GS will cruise at 90mph all day long and can return up to 70 mpg and it's quicker off the mark than any regular car. They don't go wrong either.

Much as I still lust after an SV1000S, I have to be realistic. I'm likely to cover less than a thousand miles a year on whatever I may get, so a reasonable middleweight should do. I'll probably do more miles on the 125 Innova! :)

I had the RF600's ugly cousin, the GSX 600F. Didn't rate it too much. It was ridiculously heavy for a 600, not particularly quick and got into weaves once the needle hit 130mph regardless of suspension setup. I had far more fun on my little 400 Honda CB-1 which went like stink and handled great.

I like Guzzi's (and Morini's), but parts are steep and they tend to get through some. I seem to recall bigger Guzzi's using a Fiat starter motor and replacements being four times the Fiat price from a Guzzi dealer.

I ended up buying a Yamaha SZR 660 instead. That was an interesting bike. TZR 250 frame with the XTZ 660 engine. I think that was quite possibly the quickest four stroke single ever sold in this country. Certainly felt quicker than any of the old British big singles.

Yes the Guzzi was an amazing machine and if you want character it has it in spades however that Suzuki GS500 you showed does look lovely though and at just £1,400 it looks a complete bargain to me... have you put an offer in yet ?

Nice (I particularly like the exhaust pipe arrangement), but not in blue! :)

I wold post a picture of mine, except I would be too embarrassed. It sounds pretty good at the top end of the specs:

over 300BHP; double wishbone suspension all round and includes lateral dampers front and back, goes like stink in a straight line.

From that, it doesn't sound too bad.

Then we introduce the fact it's a hybrid

Oh come on. You're far to old to be playing with toys Paul!

Too late Geoff.

Nice, but too tall for me. I like to get my feet on the deck and I'm short! :D

Just wear platform boots Geoff, you know it makes sense!

Won't work. I'm only four foot nine, so I'll need a Harley with 12 inch wheels. :D

After recently fitting some uprated EBC drilled and grooved rotors (shown below) to the Brabster, in order to improve braking. I didn't think that changing the stock Mercedes brake pads would be necessary, as they were in pretty good condition and seemingly adequate....

However, after initially finding a significant improvement with the EBCs, over the stock Mercedes items, I recently noticed some imprecision and 'stuttering', when braking from high speeds on motorways, so took the car to my trusted specialist mechanic and he recommended that I fit some EBC 'Yellowstuff' pads to go with the recently fitted rotors, as essentially the car's performance, since the last sports remap [program for which was designed by someone who works for NASCAR], had now significantly exceeded the parameters of the stock brake pads...

So these were duly fitted:

Details here: http://ebcbrakes.com/product/yellowstuff-street-and-track-pads/

WOW.... What a difference, in terms a general positive feel and stopping power, even from cold!!

The EBC Yellowstuff pads are simply in a different league from anything I've used before. Thoroughly recommended for those driving performance cars with highly-tuned engines, who want the ultimate in stopping power... It's all very well having a quick car, but you also need to be able to stop it swiftly and safely, and in that respect the Yellowstuffs are no-brainer choice!

Justin, if you're not using these in your Boxy, you should be! ;)

Always desirable to be able to stop as quickly as you start.... That damn car is soon gonna be on the race track ;)

Lol... Funny you should say that, as I think Del's treating me to a track day at Oulton Park race course: http://www.oultonpark.co.uk/ http://www.msvtrackdays.com/

The car's a pure flying machine now, with truly brutal torque, so it should be fun to test it properly and see what it can do!

This could be a really expensive day out. :eyebrows:
I have got through a set of tyres on a track day before.

There is the choice of the International, Island or Fosters circuit.

Oh I know, with the Pirelli P-Zero Corsas I'm using at nearly £250 a pop, I'll have to factor that into the equation! I'll only be going if it's dry, anyway, so may fit a set of Falkens, or even some Chinese jobbies, for the day, as they'll still have good grip.

Lol, in what way? Unless you're suggesting Anglesey for its local scenery, daftee, or because of the style of the track, your knowledge of UK geography is somewhat lacking....

Wrexham to Tarporley (Oulton Park): 24.4 miles.

Wrexham to Anglesey circuit (Ty Croes): 87.0 miles.

Remember that Wrexham is right on the border with England, and so is nearer Chester, Merseyside and Manchester than many parts of Wales! ;)
