Do you still have your old wheels?
You need to be able to drive home legally.
Lol, unless you're suggesting Anglesey for its local scenery, daftee, your knowledge of UK geography is somewhat lacking....
Wrexham to Tarporley (Oulton Park): 24.4 miles.
Wrexham to Anglesey circuit (Ty Croes): 87.0 miles.
Remember that Wrexham is right on the border with England, and so is nearer Chester than many parts of Wales! ;)
Marco.
I am not talking about geographical location.
There is less to hit at Anglesey, as the run off area is better. Oulton park is a bit tight in a few places. ;)
Ah I see... Not been to either, so I wouldn't know. This will be a first for me! :)

How does one arrange insurance for a track day, in case of stuffing one's car (or bike)?
If you go to Oulton, pay attention at the briefing and take advantage of the offer of instruction. The first few laps need to ideally be with someone who knows the track. Hardly anything is flat. It is a cracking circuit, but there are a few tricky parts where you need to take the correct lines.
Don't forget, you need to drive the car home, so keep within your limits.

My insurance policy covered me for a certain number of trackdays a year.
You can get a separate policy for it i think, if your own doesnt. Some cover everything including damage to the track, or others. Covers your ncb as well

Never done a track day. I'd imagine the limits of the average road car are reached very easily, as would the limit of abilities of the average driver I reckon.
Yup, and that's why you don't take an "average road car" on one! ;)
The Brabster's been tweaked quite a bit now in all the important areas, so I think she's ready for it... That doesn't mean though I still won't end up trashing her!! :D
Nah, I shall follow Kevin's earlier sage advice.... One thought - once you become familiar with the track, can you race other buggers in their cars? That would be REAL FUN, even more so just haring around the track yourself :eyebrows::eyebrows:
Marco.
But are u ready for it:D. Dont want you trashing yourself....
Lol... You should ask folk who've been in the car with me that question! I'm a fast, fearless (but careful, when necessary) bastard, behind the wheel. Nothing really phases me, and I enjoy taking things to the limits ;)
Would still like to race other daftees there too though, and test my car (and me) against their car (and them)....

If there's anybody there with a decent Caterham or even maybe a Mclaren, you'll have your work cut out! :D

you'll get a wrap on the knuckles if you pass anywhere other than the straights (and with consent).
def recommend instruction at oulton - and spare knickers...
You are not supposed to race on a track day. Timing of laps is also frowned upon.
Some organisers will frown upon this very quickly and you will be Black flagged and sent home.
Just bear in mind that you are likely to be on track with some serious machinery, and quick drivers used to track days. You may find that you have a lot to learn and that your car is not as good as you think it is on a track.
It all depends on who and what you are on track with. Your best approach is to go there to have fun. Forget about pushing the limits on your first day as it usually ends in tears.

I'd also be really wary of brakes and tyres getting hot in anything 1250kgs+. if it starts moving about, have a cool down lap and come in.

Very good and sensible advice, Kevin. I certainly won't be going there to act like an arse and think I know it all, which I certainly don't. I'll be there to observe the rules and enjoy the day, *but*, once I'm happy with what's required, I intend to get stuck right in and push things to the limits of the rules and my ability (together with the car's) :)
I am super-competitive though, in these situations [a calculated risk-taker], and like to win races [won quite a few already on normal roads, when quiet, against some 'interesting' cars, lol], so once I became more experienced with taking the Brabster on a track, increasing my abilities in that respect, and if there was the opportunity to race other people, I'd be RIGHT up for that!!

check the trackday rules on that, marco. they might be a bit funny about handheld camera/ipads, etc. (so you can't time the laps).
with the mgs on track lot, a camera needs to be bolted to a rollcage (ie - NOT suction cupped to the dash).
[edit - I realise now that you are probably talking about filing from trackside, rather than in the car...]

I was thinking more about what the Brabster would look like in the rear view mirror of my Caterham. :eyebrows:
Only kidding, but you will have your work cut out against any thing of a similar ilk, especially in the hands of really capable drivers. They will probably be running slicks or track day type tyres, so will have much more grip available than you.
If you were to "Race" me on the road, you would win quite easily. I just don't bother with that type of thing other than the occasional "traffic light Grand Prix" if I meet something interesting. There are too many risks involved.
It is behaviour best saved for the track.
In France I spend most of my time looking in the mirrors, as I have to go out with the single seaters unless on a club day.
It's no fun as they are seriously quick cars, mostly driven by amateur racing drivers on test days. The combination of driver and car is one far more capable than me and my 7. I think I am the limiting factor though.

A SuperSport running a tuned 1.8 VHPD engine with dry sump, Jenvey throttle bodies, Auto-Tecnix cold air feed airbox, Emerald K6 ECU and Freestyle inboard suspension shod with A048s.

Lol... Love it :D
No idea how the Brabster would fare against your Catty, on a race track, so can't comment. It would be interesting finding out, though! In terms of the 'racing' I do on normal roads, it's mostly (like you do) "traffic light Grand Prix", or on empty motorways late at night, in dry/clear conditions. Had a nice one recently against an M3, and the bloke driving it was good.
Look, make no mistake, when I go to Oulton Park, I'll be arriving there as an amateur, having full respect for those with faster cars and greater driving ability than me. However, let's put it this way, I'm the type who, when it's appropriate to do so, *never* shirks a challenge, and when the 'gauntlet's down', has the nerve and determination to go places others may fear to tread, no matter if it's driving or anything else.... ;)
Marco.

Ah. Don't know that one. I'll have to read up on it Marco. Looks good though.
Btw, you know how it's my intention to take the Brabster on a track later this year?
Well, I took it into my trusty (specialist) mechanic, who's an expert in remapping BMWs, Mercs, Audis, etc, and told him to 'max-out' the car's engine performance, with a view to it going on the track, but whilst still retaining its practicality as a road car (so nothing too mental was done). He carried out a 'Stage 2' sports remap [updating the first stage that was done last year], the program for which was written by a mate of his who does work for NASCAR, tweaking the torque curves (psi) and doing some stuff with the injectors. Most of it went over my head.
Anyway, after which he ran the car through his dyno, and it was producing 510lb ft of torque and 370bhp. Remember that this is 'only' a 3.5L V6 diesel saloon, not a 'muscle car'.
He also carried out a speed test, and the car achieved 0-60mph in 4.9 secs. Not bad, I thought, for what isn't ostensibly a sports car... The most relevant figure there is the torque, which is pretty brutal - and you can *feel* it, as your cheeks move when you accelerate hard!! :eyebrows::D
It's truly an utter riot now to drive, and even the engine note has changed to a deeper 'growl', and a sort of 'throaty whine' when you give it some! Lots of fun
Marco.

Lol... Doubt it'd feel like a Beemer, though, if you drove it! ;)
It's also mentalist fast..... 0-62mph in 3.9 secs!!! :wow:
Marco.
what was the rpm at 510 mate?
Dunno, mate, I'd have to ask him, as he's got the printout. Should've thought of that. I'll pop him and email and find out. Decent figures though, I thought :)
Marco.
very.. good bit of bottom end torue it should have but thats impressive. A lot of big engines dont give that... An Aston-Martin Vanquish 5.9 V12 RS does about the same ft/lb at about 5000 revs... got a lot more bhp of course

Yup, but for me torque is more important, overall, than total bhp. It's brutal 'pulling power', which delivers most of the thrill! :eyebrows:
We had the Brabster's turbo reconditioned and virtually rebuilt, with new bearings, compressor wheel, etc, last year, so that we could get the most out of it. It was Kevin's idea - and that made a BIG difference on its own. It's a fooking big turbo, too. When Kev was road-testing the car, before I got it back, he said it felt faster than a C63 AMG he had driven recently.
Need to go and 'pick a fight' now with something on the road that's a bit 'daft' and see at which point I have to give up and admit defeat... ;)

Here's a C63 doing its 'thang', which my mechanic considers is slower than my car now. The exhaust noise on the Brabster (from the quad 3.5ins pipes), since its latest 'tweak', is similarly brutal, although not *quite* as noisy and defo not as 'spitty' [more deep-toned]:

I rode and cycled all year round, in whatever weather. A one piece waterproof suit keeps the worst at bay and if you wear sensibly warm gear under it, you stay warm enough as a rule. The cold can get to you on a long run though.

Have you had much to do on it what that sort of mileage?
I had the early T595 Daytona and the later more angular shaped Daytona 955i both great bikes, the earlier bike with a high level triumph race can was probably the best sounding bike ive ever had....
Nice Mark...hope you enjoyed the route
Most definitely did - but we did much more than just Route 66. It's a VERY long story, but my family are from the US (Dad was in the USAF and came to England in 1959, to USAF/RAF Bruntingthorpe - stayed here and raised his family here (I'm a Dual National).
We went up to Northern Colorado, to Eagle and Vail, to the small town of Red Cliff which was founded by my Great Great Grandfather in 1879 - he was Town Marshall and MD..!!.. Got the chance to visit his grave in the Boot Hill cemetery!
But, after doing a little over 4,500 miles in 11 days, I crashed in Tennessee - lots of surgery followed (and is still ongoing, last op was 3 weeks ago).
Had the bike shipped home, repaired it, and got it back on the road - cost WAY more than it's worth, but I NEEDED to get the thing back here!!!

I bought the bike Stateside, it already had 118,000 miles on the clock. It was in really good (but obviously used) condition.
I did all the servicing stuff before riding out (plugs, oil, filters, brake pads etc), and then put 4,500 miles on it in 11 days. Didn't miss a beat, nor did it burn a drop of oil!
After I crashed it (low speed, got tangled up with an Armco guard rail on a twisty mountain road in Shady Valley Tennessee), my friend over there put another 3,000 or so miles on before I shipped it to the UK.
It's ironic, I live just 15 miles from where it was built, but it had never seen a U.K. road before!
Anyway, I spent a fortune, new (Wilbers) back shock, new brake discs, replaced all wheel bearings, swingarm bearings and seals, headstock bearings - just loads, but finally got it UK registered and on the road on Oct 1st last year. Despite the ongoing nature of my leg injuries, I managed 800 miles on it in October, then SORNed it - it will likely be September before I get to try riding again!
It's special this bike, very special indeed...

Not really car related, but here are two amazing two stroke diesel engines from the past which I thought might be of interest.
The supercharged Commer 'Knocker' lorry engine, with three cylinders and six opposing pistons. These have a sound all of their own.
http://i63.tinypic.com/2hqxzy9.jpg
The supercharged Napier 'Deltic' rail locomotive engine, with six rows of three cylinders with opposing pistons built in triangles, giving 18 cylinders and 36 pistons. Incredible!
http://i64.tinypic.com/1zd4ynl.jpg
The Commer and Napier were very powerful for their size and their time and even by modern standards.
Variants of each were produced with differing numbers of cylinder rows and both types were used in other applications including marine use.

More like 130mph. IIRC the fastest ever 125 is still the late sixties V4 Yamaha. Later rule changes limiting them to 2 cylinders saw to that.

I remember those being raced. Watched Mike Hailwood on the Honda 500 four as well. Wasn't there an oversized development of the Honda six? 305cc if I recall, that raced in the 350 class.
Earlier, Moto Guzzi made a 500 'V8' racer. Around 1960 I think.

Seems I'm not the only one who likes this. The bidding is now up to £16,000 and nearly nine days to go. Could get very interesting!!
Always looking to increase the handling, ride quality and performance of the Brabster, I shall be installing some Bilstein gas-pressure sports shock absorbers:
_N427gaBEEs
https://www2.bilstein.com/en/product/bilstein-b6/
These will compliment the already existing lowered sports suspension, and work in tandem with the uprated performance brakes (EBC Yellow Stuff pads with drilled and grooved discs). Full report, in comparison with standard Mercedes shock absorbers, in due course!
Marco.
I am surprised you have standard Merc shocks on a Brabus tuned Merc.
Indeed, Kevin, apparently so. Seems that's one area the guy who previously 'pimped' the car missed, which was only discovered in a recent MOT! Should be a nice upgrade

Marco,
What springs are you using in the Brabster?
Do they lower the car much over stock?
Stuff it I'll phone you, couple of car related things to ask. :)

You've got to have drilled disc brakes simply because they just look meaner.
That's what I've got, Justers, these babies (drilled and slotted), which look fab: https://ebcbrakes.com/product/3gd-sport-rotors/ notably lighter too, than standard discs, so less rotating mass... :)

I remember way back in the late eighties owning a Kawasaki GPz1000RX which had around 125hp and weighed around 250kgs. I absolutely loved that bike but Jesus it was fast. Tramping down those flat Lincolnshire roads back then was some bloody experience. Yes, I so wish I could do it all again but severe osteoarthritis in my left knee probably wouldn't allow it any more, that and all of the bloody cameras around these days.

Yes. The cameras worry me too. Fortunately I only have a 125 scooter at the moment (apart from the cars). :)

That sounded like fun, Shaun! And these days everyone needs a bit of fun in their lives, which is why I drive the kind of car I do and love it to bits :)
Speed cameras are only an issue if you're driving over the limit. 90% of the fun of driving a fast car comes from the thrill of accelerating up to the speed limit.
On a nice open road (of which there are plenty around North Wales), that initial 0-60/70mph can put a HUGE grin on your chops, especially in a race-tuned 3.5L turbo diesel, delivering nearly 600 ft lbs of torque [340bhp], and the sheer force pulls you back in your seat! :D:D
Plus, when you improve the handling of the car considerably, as I've done (with lowered sports suspension, sports discs/brakes, etc, and 19" wheels/low-profile tyres), so that you can throw it round bends in country lanes, as safely and as fast as your nerves can take it (lol), that's also a big part of the fun... :eyebrows:
I honestly derive more pleasure these days from tweaking my car [and enjoying the improved driving experience afterwards] than I do my hi-fi system!

Yes I agree Geoff and I agree Marco. That 1000RX would do 0-60 in around three seconds and a whole quarter mile in just over twelve but wherever I used to go I seldom did below 90. Now, the main route down through Lincolnshire to Peterborough is completely lined with cameras. Yes OK, possibly thanks to people like me back in the eighties/nineties but there are so many cameras down that route. The last bike I had was a Kawasaki VN1500 which slowed me down a lot as it was basically a Harley clone but with a much more flexible engine. That was back around 2001 where upon I had given up trying to outpace everyone and just settled down to a really nice, enjoyable ride around the countryside of Lincolnshire. As I am now back living in this gorgeous county of flat endless roads I am feeling that pull again. Oh dear...!

Totally agree with that. I've have/have had bikes that are fast and powerful with lunatic high speed capability but the real fun for me at least is the long winding bends, twisty turns etc where one has to use the gearbox a bit, manoeuvre the bike in and out of the bends. Doesn't matter if it's a Fireblade or an MZ! My favourite road for that is the A423 out of Coventry and down into Oxfordshire. Early on a Sunday morning, no traffic. It's life affirming! I always found bombing down the motorway a little perfunctory.
Cheers

I know the feeling Shaun! The itch is still there.
Oh Geoff, isn't it just...!
I would love a fully equipped VN1700 with screen, back rest and colour matched panniers but maybe not at over twelve grand. I think of the hi-fi that would buy me and how much safer it would be.
So.... Picked up the Brabster last night, driving it back from Oswestry (where my mechanic has his place), and the improvement in ride quality is palpable! :)
When the car went through its MOT recently, one of the advisories was some wear in the front shocks, which was fair enough, as they were still the original ones fitted to the car, which has now done just over 80k miles... Upon inspection, once they'd been removed, you could obviously see that they were worn, not badly, but enough to impact on their performance.
Therefore, what we do in instances like that is not simply replace like for like, but significantly improve on what was there to start with, in order to make the car BETTER than before, and the Bilstein shocks, just like everything else that's been fitted so far in that respect, are a totally different ball game from the stock items, as indeed they should be at £320 (a pair) +VAT and fitting.
The biggest improvement so far (as I haven't had the chance yet to throw the car round any major corners) is the ride quality, in terms of how much better now you're cushioned from the effects of bumpy roads, where previously you could really feel the effect of driving on poor road surfaces (taking into consideration the effect of having a lowered sports suspension and low-profile tyres), now all you can feel is a gentle 'push', as the car glides gazelle-like over humps and bumps - and that's not simply because the old shocks were worn, but because the new ones are simply made much better, as even when I first got it, the car has never driven *this* good!
So, job done. I'm suitably impressed enough with the Bilsteins to have the same fitted to the rear, which will no doubt improve things further. If anyone is considering some top-notch aftermarket shock absorbers for their car, then I can thoroughly recommend the Bilstein B6 mono-tube shocks.
I'm looking forward now to testing the car's handling on some local country lanes later, and it's a lovely day for a nice drive, so will probably take my dad out for lunch to a nice country pub. Happy days
Marco.
suspension is often the least thought of for performance and safety. probably coz you cant see it in action etc.
So the car is now unbalanced front to rear?
walpurgis

So the car is now unbalanced front to rear?
Tyres and suspension, front compared to rear often don't match.
So the car is now unbalanced front to rear?
Lol - not at all. Certainly doesn't feel that way!
I just wanted to be sure that the Bilsteins made a significant enough improvement at the front, where the effect is likely to be more pronounced, before shelling out another £500+ (supplied and fitted) on rear shocks. Sensible, no? :)
Therefore, if the car's this good 'unbalanced', then one can only drool at what it'll be like 'balanced', when the upgraded rear shocks have been fitted!
Marco.
I doubt that you have taken it anywhere near the limit on public roads to find out if it is well balanced or not.
That just would not be sensible.
When I swapped the shocks on my car, I did front and rear at the same time replacing my Bilsteins for something better/more suited to my car.
Tyres and suspension, front compared to rear often don't match.
Yeah, good point. The tyres, front and back are a different size. The rears are significantly wider and lower profile (255/30/ZR19) than the front (225/35/ZR19). I suspect the shocks will be different too, in that respect.
Marco.

What did you got for instead? In terms of "better", I guess that's subjective, and also as you say, car-dependent :)
And yes, you're right, as far as taking the car to its limits. Of course not. That's one for when it goes onto the track. However, in the meantime, the improvement in ride quality is significant enough to have made the job of replacing/upgrading the front shocks highly worthwhile!
I'll get the rears done after the summer hols.
Marco.
suspension is often the least thought of for performance and safety. probably coz you cant see it in action etc.
Indeed, mate. For me, there's hee-haw point in tuning a car's engine to near its limits, if you don't also attend to the 'less sexy' bits too, which actually keep you on the road! :D
Plus, STABILITY, EFFORTLESSNESS and COMFORT, at speed, for me is vital. No point in being able to go fast, it it isn't also FUN and, above all, SAFE.
Marco.
I currently run Avo adjustable dampers with adjustable spring platforms. A set of Nitron or similar would be nice.
Cool beans, daftee...

Hear you on the Bilsteins?
After a Service visit to my (not so) local Alfa dealer, had a cracked front spring?
9 yr old car, and figured the original Bilstein dampners may have lost some pressure, so when I had the brakes upgraded decided to do the suspension at the same time.
Full swap out of Bilstein/Eibach suspension bits n bobs, new lease of life for the car feels great.

Yeah, was a good day out.
I see my dad at least twice a week, and on a Thursday he either cooks something (usually some home-made pasta, which he's very good at) at his place, and if it's a nice day, we sit outside under the pergola in his back garden and enjoy it, with a few glasses of wine, but this morning he phoned me up and said that as it was a nice day he'd like to go for a run somewhere.
So I took the opportunity to test out the new shocks and have some quality time with him. Yup, defo going to get the rear shocks Bilstein'd!

Hehehe... Not disputing any of that. However, do remember that I didn't buy the Brabster as a sports car; indeed it fundamentally *isn't* one!
It was bought to be a comfortable (and practical) tourer [to travel abroad in], capable of good fuel consumption, with a soupçon of FUN added (at a sensible price)! With that in mind, for £16k used, which is what I paid for it 2 years ago, name me another car I could've bought instead to fulfil the above brief that also:
a) Had 4 doors, a large boot and the ability to carry 4 people in complete comfort for many 100s of miles.
b) Minimum size 3-litre engine (for performance and 'effortlessness' on long journeys).
c) Economical on fuel (if I take it easy on motorways I can get 40 miles to the gallon).
d) Along with ALL of the above, the performance of a sports car.
e) Unique looks and individuality (as I can't stand driving the same car as tens of 1000s of others).
Give it yer best shot! ;)

Dunno, but I've shed a significant amount of what it had when I bought it, with some of the mods I've done.

I made my car lighter. I emptied the ashtray! :D
I got 41.7 driving into work the other day. Tis an hour's drive in the current jobbie.
The car very frequently drops to 800 rpm on the motorway. Just back off slowly on the peddle and it does it. Simple and effective.
But hey the performance you have achieved is impressive for the spend.
That's the KEY, and what modding it has been all about. Honestly, in almost every conceivable way, it's TWICE the car now than it was when I bought it [and it was good then]!
Marco.

True but if you need a trans-galactic comfort machine of considerable status and size get a Panamera.
I always think they are a bit wank but hey we all have different needs.:)
My sis has a Cayenne but that is just uncomfortable (seriously) and you'd hate the high ride position.
Face it a 911 doesn't fit your requirements anyway. You'll probably never be a Porsche boy:(
True but if you need a trans-galactic comfort machine of considerable status and size get a Panamera.
Defo more my thang, but not sure it's tens thousands of pounds better than the Brabster..... You see, much as I cherish the 'SPPV principle' with hi-fi, I also do the same with 'BANG per buck', with cars ;)
The Brabster isn't the best car on the road, or the best one ever built, far from it, BUT it's 100% tailored for my needs, makes me happy, and puts a big tick on the 'BANG per buck' box... And that's all that matters! :)
Right now at this point in my life, I wouldn't dream of dropping any more than £20k on a car, so whatever I buy for that amount MUST be the *absolute most* I can get for that money, which ticks all the right boxes for ME.
That approach most likely will change when both of us are fully retired and we simply want to 'spend up' before kicking the bucket, because, as they say, you can't take it with you... In which case, I'd be willing to spend much more on the right car!
My sis has a Cayenne but that is just uncomfortable (seriously) and you'd hate the high ride position.
Soz, wouldn't take one of those things in a gift! :nono:

Lol.. Nope, not at all. I love 911s, and by then my priorities will have changed, as when the old man's gone, it'll just be Del and I. The Brabster was bought to take both him (and my mum who sadly passed away just after I bought it), along with Del (and moi) on holidays to Italy.
When it's just the two of us, things will be different, and it'll be time to RAMP UP the fun-factor even more, while we're still young enough to enjoy it!! :mex: :champagne: :champagne:
Marco.
I don't genuinely drive a lot of different cars but in the past decade the only cars I have driven that have impressed me have had Jaguar, Mercedes or Porsche written on them.
Track driven Ferraris and Astons and my sis had a Vantage. The F-Type she has now is a lot more comfortable to drive but doesn't look as good.
Most fun drive on a track was a Lotus if you can handle the discomfort but TBH the best track drive is Porsche. The handling is laser guided ridiculous on the better ones.
Leccy cars are increasingly interesting but someone has to suss a Fusion reactor to make them realistic on the macro scale.
Glass batteries from Mr Goodenough at the ripe old age of 94 who gave you Lithium Iron will help. Massive respect to him albeit the odd fire or two. Glass batts won't do that.
Agreed on the Jag/Merc/Porsche thing, although for me 'proper' Jags are a thing of the past, such as the XJ (X350). Now THAT was a proper Jaguar:
LmqtQOd8o10 5ipYYsCW5hM
Gorgeous!!
I also have a huge affection for Astons and most Italian super-cars, plus Corvettes and Mustangs.
Leccy cars do NOTHING for me, as diehard 'petrolhead'. I respect the engineering qualify of best ones and acknowledge their good points, but will never own one. Just not my bag :nono:
Aside from a 911, I've also always hankered after an Alpina BMW, as the quality in every area is amazing, and they have superb engines. The likes of this badass B7 would tick many boxes for me [including the major one of you almost never see any of them on the road, as I like to 'stand out from the herd']:

My taste would be more like this. An Alfa Sprint. Not the fastest car by any means, but sporty enough and that little flat four engine is a peach!

Hard to find a solid one in this country. Cracking little motor though.
The Wald has far too much bling for my liking.
I think I would rather have an M5 Touting or Audi RS6. Fantastic engines and a useful/practical car.
If I wanted something sporty, something like a Singer 911 would be spot on.
+1 for the Singer 911. Very tasteful and beautifully executed classic 911 shape. The Wald looks horrific imo! The stance is all wrong and the roofline/glasshouse is too high. The old XJ was a much better proportioned car, and looked much nicer.

Yeah, it'd have been less blingy in black, but the shape is lovely, and that quad exhaust system, with 'overlapping' tailpipes, is a work of art!

The RS6 (and 8) are cool, but still a bit too common on the road for my liking, which is why something like the Wald or an Alpina B7 would appeal, once the Brabster bites the dust.
A Singer 911 would also fit the bill :)

Well the current Jag XJs may look seriously boring, and the one I had at £62K+ for a good few days I didn't even like the interior of, but I can tell you the car is awesome. On the motorway it is just awesome. Trans-continental machine of the highest order. Seriously comfortable, effortless, quiet and fast enough.
Also massive plus was the Meridan in-car system. Very, very, very good. I don't like Meridian much as a brand but that in-car system was brilliant.
Gazjam's Alfa is a lot better than your selection Marco. Look again. You surely need an eye test.;)
Hahaha... Lol! Just a matter of different tastes, mate. What Gaz posted is too 'nice' looking for me. I prefer it more BRUTAL!
Unless we're talking about something *really* special (on the level of a Lambo), I'm not big on 2-door sports cars. Much prefer a nice big, badass 4-door sport saloon/tourer, which gets others and me abroad in comfort, and with a boot I can bring some wine back in!! :ner:
The exception would be a 911, especially the Singer ones linked to earlier, as they're just so sexy, it's untrue.
Yup, I'm with you on the Jag's engine and how it drives (the report on Top Gear confirmed what you've said), but for £70K, it'd need to tick ALL the right boxes for me, not just some of them, and any aspect of "seriously boring" simply wouldn't be considered!!
I don't DO boring - EVER.
Apart from it driving like a demon, if just looking at a car of that cost doesn't make me want to tug on my middle leg, then it's a no-no.... :nono:

"awesome" on the motorway is all well and good, but at the legal limit of 70mph, how awesome is that? Don't get me wrong, I like getting a move on, but nowadays there are just too many speed cameras, unmarked police cars and mobile speed traps about to make exceeding the limit a relaxed business.
The temptation to go fast in it was high as it just glides... A day before I had a new Mercedes ML350. What a joke of a car. Terrible thing. Status thing with a family only for parking outside schools. Otherwise hopeless.

Golf in left hand lane, BMW in right hand lane.
IMO most people don't know how to drive correctly around an island, including where to signal.

I thought this might be the case but I totally disagree.
I was taught that the 'onward' direction on an island is to continue around it, think of it as the 'straight ahead', if it was a straight road you continue on that course.
So once you are on the island, no matter how many lanes there are (unless marked for specific direction) then you should indicate when you want to leave.
The Golf was not indicating to leave plus the BMW actually overtook on the island then turned in, totally wrong.
If it was on a straight road it would be the equivalent of someone overtaking then cutting up to turn off. IMO of course.
Quotes from the Highway Code:
'be aware of the speed and position of all the road users around you.'
'watch out for all other road users already on the roundabout; be aware they may not be signalling correctly or at all'
In all cases watch out for and give plenty of room to :
'traffic crossing in front of you on the roundabout, especially vehicles intending to leave by the next exit'
How the hell should the Golf driver cover the last quote when the BMW overtook then cut in without warning?

Both drivers are at fault.
The Golf for not indicating their intentions, and ignoring the Highway Code and for total lack of road craft.
The BMW for not realising that the Golf could not disappear into thin air, and not making allowances for idiotic drivers.
In vas there was any doubt about the Golf....

Yes, that's also pretty much my view. As far as the actual impact occurring itself is concerned, the fault is 100% with the BMW driver.
However, as for the rest, much depends at what point both cars have entered the roundabout, and also in which direction they were travelling, which on the video is unclear.
The FACT is, in roundabouts with more than one lane, as per that shown in the video, *if* when joining, you're leaving at the last available exit, so effectively turning right, then you DON'T sit on the left-hand lane, going round like a tool, all the way to arriving at your exit (as the Golf driver was doing)! :nono:
You enter on the righthand lane, whilst indicating right, and continue round on the right, until approaching your exit, then indicate left, moving over onto the lefthand lane, before taking the exit, which is what the BMW driver appeared to be doing, until he collided with the Golf, due to not paying sufficient attention to what was happening around him.
Alan, what you've suggested only applies at the likes of mini-roundabouts, where there's only one lane. At least, that was how I was taught to drive! :D
Marco.
Or in France, where it is normal.
Ah well, that's their fault! :D
Marco.
And Spain where it is also normal
Lol - no wonder there are so many accidents in these places. Italy's the same!
Marco.
I agree - both were at fault: the Golf for being in the wrong lane and not indicating, the BMW for seemingly being unaware of the Golf (or of being in too much of a hurry to be able to slow down and allow the Golf to pass the exit).
I need to replace the two front tyres on the wife's X-trail.
Like all SUVs, it spends 95% or more of the time on tarmac. However, we do see snow and sometimes mud with the car.
Does anybody have experience of the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen2 or the Michelin CrossClimate/+ ?

I've had a clean licence for almost 20 years. Given the way I drive, that suggests a fairly lax enforcement regime ;).
I get your point though - performance cars have in a way become too much compromised towards Nurburgring lap times and stupid low profile tyres/large wheels for my liking. In a way, I enjoy low/moderate performance (in absolute terms) cars with great handling that make you feel like you're making it go fast than it normally would, using heal+toe gear changes like I do in my 1.6 Focus mk.1 shit heap. Having said that I do also rather like the performance of my 5.5 twin turbo v8 AMG though, if not the fuel consumption

Sooner or later, new cars will come with limiters that restrict top speed to whatever is in force locally. It's just a matter of time.
Never had a ticket either .... fortunately :D I do try and stay legal although it only takes a moments lack of awareness and your nicked
Not too shabby. Are you allowed to use launch control on a test drive?
I'm not sure what the deal is. It is a Porsche open day and they just e-mailed me asking me what I wanted to drive. So I said a 911 of some description - I'm hardly gonna say no.
The last time I took a test drive they just gave me the keys and said come back in two hours.
They do try to sell you the cars, though. We've had two free days at Silverstone at their facility so far, with lots of time on the tracks with gourmet meals chucked in.
Way better than Mercedes ownership from that point of view. I drove their cars for 13 years and never got anywhere near as nicely treated.

Nah there's no money that way. However, driverless may do it, when we're all ferried around like zombies. When driverless gets common and cars are communicating with each other there is potential for much better throughput on our drastically overcrowded roads, however.
The over-population this country is experiencing is BY FAR the worst problem. It is killing driving for pleasure. That and the fact actually living it in for the fear of cat and mouse speeding fines, the vast majority of which are for a slight exceedance of the speed limit.

Is it industry driving the trend towards non-internal combustion cars or is legislation? Or both?
I can see that this is happening to 'protect the environment', but does it? Nobody seems to address the environmental impact of producing highly toxic batteries and eventually having to safely recycle them. Or the enviromental cost of producing electricity to power electric vehicles as compared to burning hydrocarbon fuel (not all of it is fossil fuel). Hybrid vehicles I suspect are an interim non-solution.

Comfortable? Yes. People think these cars are going to be uncomfortable but they aren't. This I would say was just a tinsy bit less comfortable than my Boxster. Still very comfortable, in other words. The longer the drive you have in these cars, the more comfortable you think they are. Strange phenomenon.
Fast? Sure, faster than mine. Sonics? You can hear a whistle from the turbos. When I got back in mine I actually thought it sounded better. Because it does.
Worth the extra money? Well, I don't really think so. The trouble is the Boxsters and Caimans are so good, these have a tough time warranting the extra money. And it is a lot more money.
My vote for the most impressive bang for your buck would be a Caiman 981. You don't even need the S variant, the basic 981 is pretty fabulous really. But you can't take the lid down like a Boxster, which wrecks summer fun. It drives better than my Boxster (not by much but you do realise it) and the naturally aspirated flat 6 is more fun than the 718, though a tad slower.
Don't get me wrong this is a better car. But just look at the frigging price of it. Relatively, not worth it for me. By a long shot. More than happy with mine when I got back in it. It looks a lot better too to my eyes.

New Bugatti Chiron. Clarkson is impressed!

So I actually ended up in one of these for 45 minutes. In white. Don't like white. Or yellow:D

Late to this, Justers, soz... Nice car, but why oh why do they show these in such wanky 'gay boy' colours?
The ONLY colour for a 911 is bad-ass black! And then, to highlight the 'brutality' further, I'd love to see one in MATT black (with black wheels), as I think the matt finish you can get now is as cool as fuck :yesbruv:
Totally understand that you're happy with yer Boxty, as the money for a new 911 is just madness, although there is no other car like it, if you love what it *is*/does :)
The Brabster's in having a new timing chain fitted, as I heard a dragging/rattle the other day when I was driving off, and took the car into the garage, where when the cover was taken off the engine compartment, you could hear the rattling down one side...
What my mechanic thinks has happened is that one of the sprockets, holding the timing chain in position, has broken off and is causing it to drag/slip, so rather than risk it failing altogether, which would be catastrophic, the whole thing's being replaced. I'm taking the car to Germany this year, so it has to be right!
It's having an oil and filter change at the same time, just in case any splinters of metal have contaminated the existing oil, and with a timing chain change, a new filter and clean oil should used, so I'm going to try some of this stuff (PETRONAS Syntium 5000 XS), which is supposed to be shit-hot:

...and a K&N Pro Series oil filter: https://www.knfilters.com/kn/pro_series_oil_filter.aspx
Should be good when I get it back!
Marco.
Fuchs Titan Race Pro S is also worth looking at.
Yeah mate, that's good oil, I've used it before :)

Just had the engine oil & filter, gearbox oil and air filter changed on the Peugeot Partner 2.0 HDi. Buggers charged me £110!
Could be worse, I guess oils were charged at about £45 and filters maybe £20, so that's only £35 labour. It's a damn good car, so I guess it's worth it! :)

Time for a change, current car is a Honda CR-V, would prefer to stay with a petrol SUV or 4x4 as I like the higher driving position, I don't have a high mileage just now so the petrol makes more sense but makes the choice more difficult.
Looking to buy nearly new or ex dem probably.
Up for selection so far, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, BMW X1 or 3, Audi Q3, Mercedes GLC, or blow the budget for a Jag F pace.

Is this good news or bad?
http://www.itv.com/news/2017-07-25/new-diesel-and-petrol-cars-to-be-banned-in-uk-from-2040/
Obviously a good way off, but what are the implications in the interim? It's all very well grabbing a 'classic car' or even a current one to keep, but will there still be fuel available?
(mind you, there'll probably be another world war or global pandemic outbreak to totally change the picture by then)
2040? If you're still around then, old chap, I doubt that driving a car will be uppermost on your mind... Dribbling, yes, driving, no! :D
Let's just see what happens in the future, and in the meantime, continue having fun in our petrol or diesel cars, whilst slinging the government a huge 'FUCK YOU' sign....
In other news, the Brabster's been back from getting the timing chain done (plus new fan belt fitted, while the mechanic was in there), oil and filter change, and K&N air filters cleaned, and it's going like a bomb - better than it ever has! :)
Also, as the injectors had to come out, to get at the timing chain, I decided to have them tested and professionally cleaned (all the Piezo nozzles, etc) at United Diesel: http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-injector-pump-repairs/
I suspect that's what has had the biggest impact on performance, as the engine is not only running smoother than ever, but is significantly more responsive, too... I'm certain that cleaning the injectors has released some latent potential, and notably increased the BHP. It's just ridiculously rapid now, with OODLES of torque!:eek:
I'm also thinking about going for an 'Extreme Flow' injector power upgrade, see here: http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-injector-power-upgrades/ just to see how bad-ass the Brabster can get... Watch this space! :eyebrows:
