Our nearest place is a BP/Marks & Spencers, and all the local ones are manned.
Exactly! Utterly dreadful... Well, I hope that 'the future' stays well away from here for as long as possible!!
:exactly:
Marco.
I sort of agree in general terms, I'd like to see a tax on supermarkets and the revenue used to give tax breaks to the specialist independent shops to encourage more of them to open.
But not really sure this should extend to putting fuel in a car. I mean what happened when post boxes first appeared? No more handing your letter and a farthing to a burly bloke on a horse and having a quick chat about the football and the weather.
Did people complain then? I don't know but since the post box system has been around for long before any of us were born we take it for granted that we can post a letter without any human interaction. I don't see why putting fuel in a car needs to be any different.
the asda station a few miles away was all automated. ive only used it once or twice and that was yrs ago. But i think it was designed that way.
Does that, and what Macca's just described though, represent REAL progress? Not for me it doesn't!
So why do so many of us just settle for it, and allow ourselves to be manipulated like sheep to behave *exactly* as the powers that be want, in order for them to achieve their 'vison of the future'?
Think about it: we gladly sit back and let it happen, not just with this, but many other examples of changes to our lives that haven't resulted in an increased in 'feel-good factor', self-service checkouts in supermarkets, even scanners, so YOU do the whole bloody thing yourself, as an unpaid slave:mental: and high streets decimated, now largely ghost towns, because of soulless on-line shopping...
Does that also represent REAL progress?
WHY do we just sit back, time and time again, be what THEY want us to be, and essentially let them fuck us up the arse...?
Marco [a non-conformist now, and forever].

i rarely used self scanning; only when i had just a few things and the tills had big queues. its not something i liked. you see folk here, or when i went into shops all using these self scanners as they shop.. f that for a game
Our nearest place is a BP/Marks & Spencers, and all the local ones are manned.
not keen on unmanned, as its too easy for the scanners to be interferred with by con men.
I topped my car up a week back. I had to put over half a tankful in, so that was £17 quid's worth :).
That'll last me until autumn.
lol. mine was £15.01.. i went over lol. it was about 2/3 full tho or just under. that was about 140 miles i think

Yes, but try answering some of the questions I posed!;)
Essentially, why do we just sit back, time and time again, and allow ourselves to simply 'bend' into accepting the 'progress' that we've given, when deep down we know full well that it's not REAL progress, but just something that's more convenient?

We self scan in Tesco, as we prefer it, plus you know how much you are spending. The other shops we just thrown stuff in the trolley like everyone else. although I did enjoy having your shopping packed for us when we were in the States.
Yes, but try answering some of the questions I posed!;)

i think modern folk quite like it as they are quicker and most are running around all day. you and i can take our time
I sort of agree in general terms, I'd like to see a tax on supermarkets and the revenue used to give tax breaks to the specialist independent shops to encourage more of them to open.
Great idea!
Thing is, how would we go about educating the masses into using them, who are too boring and bone idle to do anything but click on a mouse?
But not really sure this should extend to putting fuel in a car. I mean what happened when post boxes first appeared? No more handing your letter and a farthing to a burly bloke on a horse and having a quick chat about the football and the weather.
Well, firstly, as you say that was way before your time and mine, so you can't comment on what you don't know. Plus, *sometimes* genuine progress is made!
Post Offices, in general, are a pain in the arse a) because they're never conveniently located for car drivers, and b) unlike the petrol stations I use, are almost always busy/have queues (you KNOW how I feel about queues!) and full of old grans getting their pensions and stuff, holding back folks like me who simply want to send a parcel in the quickest possible time!
Therefore, I'd say that, certainly for me, post boxes are better than living without them and having to go into post offices themselves to post something.
Did people complain then? I don't know but since the post box system has been around for long before any of us were born we take it for granted that we can post a letter without any human interaction. I don't see why putting fuel in a car needs to be any different.
Like you say, who knows whether they complained or not. Was it not the case though, that back in the day, the man on the horse also called to collect the mail you had to send, as well as deliver it? I don't know, but if so, then having to find a post box near you now and post stuff yourself wasn't an upgrade!;)
We're also lucky that we have a post box within a 20 second walk of our front door, or otherwise I might feel differently about having to do that job myself... And yes I see where you're coming from about refuelling a car, but you can only comment on what facilitates your own lifestyle best and what you prefer.
And I much prefer rocking up to a nice quiet petrol station, filling up the car (or even better, as often happens abroad, fuel being dispensed for you by an attendant, who comes to your car, and also handles payment, while you sit there and do bugger all, lol - the best ones even clean your windscreen for you!), then going into the shop and being met by a friendly member of staff, and them SERVING *me*, than fucking about at a pump.
However, as they say, each to his or her own:cool:
Marco.
i think modern folk quite like it as they are quicker and most are running around all day. you and i can take our time
Indeed, but that's a whole other conversation: *why* does no-one any longer have TIME to themselves and are always rushing around like blue-arsed flies; what precisely has caused that?
Also, in terms of "modern folk", why does it always have to be one or the other, i.e. choosing between modern and old-fashioned life or principles, rather than embracing BOTH?
I'm "modern folk" when it suits ME, after *I* (no-one else) has decided that it's the BEST for *me*, and represents genuine and worthwhile progress in areas of interest to ME, such as I download/stream music and movies, have a smart meter to help control my energy usage, have Internet banking, use induction technology on our cooker, amongst various other things, and will soon be installing solar panels in our property, to provide us with self-sufficient 'green energy'.
However' I'm 'old-fashioned folk', by choosing to shun electric cars and stick to diesel of petrol-powered ones (for as long as possible), have a multi-fuel (wood and coal) burner, as opposed to a modern gas or electric heater (but also have central heating), live in an old house with character and history, instead of some soulless modern monstrosity, etc, etc.
So what's wrong with cherry-picking the BEST (for *you*) of old and new, to create (for you) the BEST of BOTH worlds, rather than simply succumbing to everything that's new, just to be 'on trend'/up to date or whatever? It makes no sense whatsoever to me...
It's called using your OWN judgement criteria to form decisions, rather than being led by the system like a sheep!;)
Marco.
i suppose the price of housing is at bottom of it. Most now need 2 wages to have a chance of buying a house. it snowballs from there i think
We self scan in Tesco, as we prefer it, plus you know how much you are spending.
That's fine, Robin, whatever works best for you, but for me it would be a pain in the arse and also go against the grain. As a paying customer, I consider that I've earned the right to be SERVED, not do the work that paid staff should be doing for me, as indeed it once was.
As you mention in the States, at one time here staff in supermarkets and shops also packed your bags for you, which is how it SHOULD be!
I'm rarely in so much of a hurry (or super-conscious about how much I'm spending) that I need some form of machine to facilitate that and save time. In fact, if it were easier to do, I'd rather not use supermarkets at all, and simply do all my shopping at privately owned individual establishments, as used to happen back in the day, thus at all times dealing with and being served by people, not fooking machines...
And that sort of lifestyle is still possible in many small towns and villages, certainly around here, but I'm sure also in Scotland, where there's simply no need to go near a supermarket. Llangollen is one such place here, around 30 mins drive from Wrexham.
See here: https://www.llangollen.org.uk/
Awesome pubs, fab restaurants, great delis/cafes, and a multitude of superb privately owned businesses, not to mention beautiful scenery! It's where we'd probably go if we were to move from Wrexham, and of course have all the facilities that Wrexham has to offer, only half an hour away, too!
If your lifestyle/finances can facilitate it, there's simply no need to live in some grey, soulless ghetto, devoid of any sense of humanness. Not saying you do, btw, but simply responding to what Macca said of 'welcome to the future'.
The future is also what YOU make of it, through YOUR own lifestyle choices!
Most small towns and villages, in nice areas, like Llangollen, have resisted pandering to modern ways of life, for DECADES, thus have escaped the 'rat race', and aren't about to change drastically anytime soon, as they're part of a thriving community. Therefore, their future won't necessarily be the same as what exists in big towns and cities...
I often hear the term, sometimes directed at me by Piggurs, of 'in the real world', but for me what he's referring to is the FALSE/plastic world, which the masses have simply chosen to inhabit! Although perhaps that choice has sadly, in many instances, been forced upon them... REAL life, however, exists in places like Llangollen, and there are 1000s of Llangollens all over the UK....
Therefore, folks, 'The good old days' still exist if you know where to look!;)
Marco.

Things have changed quite a bit locally over the last few years, in Greenock, there are now no fruit and veg shops or delis but there is a decent butcher. In Gourock there are 2 small Co-ops and a butcher lots of coffee shops , not even a bank any more. As for fish, it’s basically the supermarkets although we usually stock up when we travel up Glasgow, https://www.thefishpeopleshop.co.uk/. What I would give for a decent local deli.
Although this place is only 3 miles away, and is really good.

Marco, if you time have a look at their wine list, and let me know if there is something I should be giving a go.
Indeed, but that's a whole other conversation: *why* does no-one any longer have TIME to themselves and are always rushing around like blue-arsed flies; what precisely has caused that?
.
if you work and have children you basically have no free time to yourself except maybe a couple of hours in the evening after you've got them off to bed.
Not like in our day when we entertained ourselves and sorted out our own problems, the little darlings now demand and get full attention all of the time.
Anything that saves people time they are going to jump on it. People like you and me are the exception, no surprise that the world is not changing to service us.

Just been to top up the tank in the Brabster, and given what we were discussing recently about petrol stations, I thought I'd snap a couple of pics from the place I use locally (less than 5 mins drive from my door).. As you can see I could hardly move for the crowds!:D
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/922/kawFac.jpghttps://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/924/GEsLxQ.jpg
Brabster at the front... A blissfully serene and relaxed experience, in all respects, including the friendly 'Hello, how are you today, sir?' I was greeted with by the lovely man in the shop, whilst he took the contactless payment and processed my reward points.
In and out in less than 3 mins, minus time for taking the pics, and now home for breakfast!
Marco.
P.S Note the lack of any 'pay at the pump' bollox;)
You left the house just to top up and take some pics, showing how badly your local petrol station is doing, then drive back home? You're a strange one you... :D The place looks an opening scene from "Vanilla Sky"... Well you were itching for a reply :)

133.9 per litre locally, Tesco, Morrison’s, or there are a couple of BP places which are a couple of pence more expensive
129.7p at my Asda yesterday. For diesel. Petrol was 2p cheaper.

Film? Strange time to be watching a film, mate:D
Anyway, hope you enjoyed it. Yeah, BP's always the dearest fuel. No idea why, but that's certainly been my experience. Texaco's not cheap either, especially the stuff I use, but as I hardly do any miles, especially now, price is a non-issue.
I put in just shy of £40, to top up the tank from just over half empty, and that'll do me for a least a month, often 6 weeks.
The station's bang in the middle of Wrexham town centre, and I've never seen it much busier, although I do go at off-peak times. However, if folks want to use supermarkets, and that keeps the station I use nice and quiet, then it suits me just fine!:eyebrows:
I also like, and very much value, the 'human touch', and being SERVED by someone with a friendly and cheery disposition, which of course is non-existent when serving yourself at the pump. It just makes the experience so much nicer, don't you think?:)
Especially when the world today is gradually being stripped of many forms of niceness - and you can enjoy these simple pleasures when you don't have to run around like a headless chicken, lol;)
Marco.
Does he come out and fill it for you? If not then he isn't serving you, he's just giving you a friendly smile while he takes yer money. OF course if he invites you to his barbeque that's different...
There used to be a little garage on the shore of Ullswater, with a big sign saying WE SERVE YOU. And they did. Shame it's gone now.

if my car was a performance one i'd likely use a fancier fuel, but toyota say bog standard stuff is all it needs. the injection system adapts to what its burning, temp humidity etc.
The way it is with modern cars I think. Older tech might be a bit more fussy.
Bought a new (to us) car on Monday. Volvo S60. Has all the toys, including wintertime sweaty arse seats. And it's a D4 diesel, the pick of the bunch. Not a hairy chested 3L Audi like I was considering, but more than quick enough for us :)

Yes they're giving it a service and MOT (though it only runs out in November). We don't pick it up till next Monday, because their standards dictate it has to be detailed and alloys refurbed (even though it already looks like a new car). Got a good feeling about this motor Grant.
For Anita comfort is everything. The seat has to be right, and because of her Fibromyalgia and Morton's neuroma, automatic gearbox is a good thing too :) At the end of the day it's her car, I just pay for it. And probably drive it 5% of the time, though I'm good with that, I like being the passenger, and anyway she's a better driver!

post offices around here are few and far between now. even the ones put into shops are getting closed. pensions etc soon wont get paid into post office accounts so i guess thats part of it
You left the house just to top up and take some pics, showing how badly your local petrol station is doing, then drive back home? You're a strange one you... :D The place looks an opening scene from "Vanilla Sky"...
Lol... Firstly, I hadn't heard of Vanilla Sky until now, let alone watched it, so I don't know what the relevance of the opening scene is. However, having Googled the film, it looks good (I like Tom Cruise), so I've bookmarked it to watch later, nice one:)
Of course I went out at my usual time (mid morning during the week when all the daftees are at work) to fill up the car, hence why it was dead. I like it that way! It isn't always like that at peak times (far from it), so I guess it pays, as there's been a filling station on that site since we moved to the area in 2000.
Then just as I was getting in the car to go home I thought, given what we'd been discussing recently, I'd take a few pics for a laugh to show how tranquil it is, compared with the hustle and bustle of the 'real world' in Preston!:ner:
After which, I swung by Sainsbury's to collect a lovely fresh crunchy baguette, and went home to have breakfast. It's a hard life!:D
Marco.
if you work and have children you basically have no free time to yourself except maybe a couple of hours in the evening after you've got them off to bed.
Not like in our day when we entertained ourselves and sorted out our own problems, the little darlings now demand and get full attention all of the time.
Well, I guess that depends on how they're brought up.
We've got numerous friends with kids, and they still have a life, simply because they've brought them up in a disciplined way and trained them not to be continual attention seekers, basically by involving them in all sorts of hobbies, such as dancing and playing musical instruments, sports, etc, and other than driving them there and collecting them later, leave them to get on with it!
Plus they also spend lots of 'quality time' together as a family, going on day trips out, etc. Quite simply, they're too well occupied to get bored and seek attention.
Internet/phone usage is also closely monitored and controlled, with strict bed times adhered to, and so phones are confiscated at that time (9pm) and not returned to them until the morning, and also banned from the table during meals - and you couldn't meet nicer, less 'needy', more well-mannered, intelligent and HAPPY kids!:)
Therefore, there no need for it to be how you describe. Yes, bringing up kids properly is a full time job, but if you bring them up the right way from DAY ONE, you can lead a perfectly fulfilled existence, with 'me time', as well as family time, if you're organised and determined enough.
Anything that saves people time they are going to jump on it. People like you and me are the exception, no surprise that the world is not changing to service us.
Indeed, but that doesn't mean we have to live in the same world as them!!;)
'Create your own world', simply by shunning the mainstream version. That's what we do, and gain from enormously:cool:
Marco.
Does he come out and fill it for you? If not then he isn't serving you, he's just giving you a friendly smile while he takes yer money. OF course if he invites you to his barbeque that's different...
Lol, or for a date, then run a mile!:D That's defo more of a problem if Del goes in to pay...;)
However, he's still serving me by processing my payment, rather than doing it myself at a pump, which I much prefer. That's also the case if I choose to buy anything in the shop. I take it to the counter and he processes the payment; I'm not scanning it in myself.
There used to be a little garage on the shore of Ullswater, with a big sign saying WE SERVE YOU. And they did. Shame it's gone now.
Indeed... So you agree that it was a much nicer/more human experience? If so, how does paying at the pump qualify as being BETTER, other than it simply being quicker and more convenient?
Is that ultimately what matters most to you? If so, we have rather different priorities in life, which is fair enough:)

No hurry, as such, but you know me and queues; I simply don't entertain them, old grans or not, lol. I'm only interested in the personal touch when I don't have to wait for it.
I'll bet many post offices are inconveniently located for car drivers because they were there before cars were a thing.
Indeed, but that doesn't alter the fact that they're inconvenient for me, and almost always busy. No shortages of them around here though, there must be at least six in Wrexham I can think of!
Granty, what the hell has happened to Bathgate? Nothing decent seems to exist there anymore, mate....:(
Marco.
Bathgate is dead now. No nothing bar a few supermarkets, pubs, carry outs, charity shops. That sort of thing.
I never really go in now as it's pointless. A couple of decent butchers and a good Baker. Think they are still going and the butcher I go to is.
A sad end to one of the top market towns.
Sad days, mate. The sooner you become an honorary member of the sheep clan, the better!:D:)

Eeh, what you like, you...
For some time now my priority seems to have been getting you to understand that your kiosk buddy is not really serving you when you buy fuel. Your priority (on this thread) is to ignore this point and make some unlikely comparisons! :)
Yes it would have been nice to have someone SERVE you (as was the case at Ullswater), but that was mostly before my time. It was also a far cry from your man who just sits behind his counter farting for Wales and waiting for you to bring payment to him ;)
Your apparent reluctance to interact with bank tellers and grans at the post office hasn't been addressed yet either...
In truth I'm not sure what your priority is - dealing with a real human being as opposed to a machine/robot is of paramount importance, unless there's somewhere you'd rather be, in which case it isn't :ner: I on the other hand will always make time for other folk, in all circumstances. This post (which has taken me for ever to type) is a case in point :)
For some time now my priority seems to have been getting you to understand that your kiosk buddy is not really serving you when you buy fuel. Your priority (on this thread) is to ignore this point and make some unlikely comparisons! :)
Not sure what you mean, I answered that perfectly clearly. He's processing my payment, instead of me having to do it myself whilst standing at a pump, so how is that not serving me? I'm sure if you asked him what he was doing, his reply would be 'serving a customer'.
So what are we arguing about?
Granted, he's not filling my car up with fuel, like what used to happen in the old days, but he's still fulfilling a task that I'd rather not do myself.
Yes it would have been nice to have someone SERVE you (as was the case at Ullswater), but that was mostly before my time. It was also a far cry from your man who just sits behind his counter farting for Wales and waiting for you to bring payment to him ;)
Agreed, but as I've outlined above, that's not the point.

It has, I answered that in this post: https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?27775-Car-(or-bike)-Chat!&p=1281400#post1281400
Thus:
Lol, I know where you're coming from, but the difference is at the filling station I'm not waiting in any queues to be served. After having filled up, I'm walking straight through the door, right up to the counter and getting served!
...unlike in a post office, which is always much busier, plus a PITA to get to.
Further reiterated here:
...but you know me and queues; I simply don't entertain them, old grans or not, lol. I'm only interested in the personal touch when I don't have to wait [in a queue] for it.
That's it in a nutshell.
In truth I'm not sure what your priority is - dealing with a real human being as opposed to a machine/robot is of paramount importance, unless there's somewhere you'd rather be, in which case it isn't :ner:
In short, whichever a) I enjoy the experience of more, and b) which is most convenient for me at the time. However, in the absence of having to stand in a queue to deal with a real human being, I'll always select that option in preference to using a machine.
All clear now, dahling?:)

Marco.
Piggurs, I'd appreciate an answer to post 4535 when you get a chance, You're a nightmare for getting a response out of when you think you've 'lost' an argument:ner:
It's not about that. No-one has 'won' or 'lost' anything. I'm only prompting you to confirm that you've understood my point (which should be patently clear). You don't have to agree with it:)
Marco.
I think this is just semantics as to what 'serve/to serve' means.
In the modern usage 'to serve' a customer means taking their money, giving them their change, saying 'Thank you.' (The last bit now appears to be optional IME).
As opposed to the man coming out, putting the petrol in your car, cleaning the windscreen, checking the oil and water.
This applies to other retail experiences too, like in a clothes shop, you browse, you select, you go to counter and pay. In the old days an assistant would come out and personally help with your selection aka 'serving' the customer.
What i don't understand is why that level of service is now not economically viable when in the past it used to be.
Staff is a big overhead. The are you being served days are gone except in smaller establishments who add a levy for it.
Most younger folk would panic and feel pushed if they had that I think.
The old tailor asking what side you dress would likely get you a slap nowadays alas.
Such is modernism
I think this is just semantics as to what 'serve/to serve' means.
I completely agree. However the indisputable fact, as you've correctly stated, is I'm still being served, even though my car's not being filled up for me with fuel. That's all I'm trying to get the obstinate wee daftee to acknowledge and accept!:D

As opposed to the man coming out, putting the petrol in your car, cleaning the windscreen, checking the oil and water.
You still get that in some places abroad, especially in Italy. It's pretty much standard (or at least was when I was last there) at Agip stations, which is a popular make of fuel over there.
However, the main point I was trying to get across to Steve, which you've highlighted rather nicely above, was, does what you've just described not represent a much friendlier and more pleasant/REAL/human experience, than a series of automated pumps (and zero human contact), where you have to do everything yourself, including processing the payment?
And if you agree, as I and I'm sure most people would, then what we've got now doesn't equate to real progress, does it? It's simply more convenient! And if that's all that matters, then for me, you're in too much of a hurry to enjoy life!:)
*That* was the main point I was trying to make.
This applies to other retail experiences too, like in a clothes shop, you browse, you select, you go to counter and pay. In the old days an assistant would come out and personally help with your selection aka 'serving' the customer.
Lol, in the old days? They still do that now mate, if you go to the right (read as privately owned) shops.
There are loads of traditional menswear shops, in the likes of Chester, where that's exactly what happens, including the ladies boutiques Del goes to. By your own admission, you don't use the high street to shop for clothes, so it's understandable you're unaware of what services are still on offer there.
As I said yesterday, it's still possible to enjoy the good things about the old days, and combine them with the good things about the 'new days', if you know where to look and have the time and inclination to do so. It's doesn't *have* to be only one or the other, especially the latter.
What i don't understand is why that level of service is now not economically viable when in the past it used to be.
Well, obviously not in filling stations, but as outlined above, it still is in shops if you know where to look:cool:

What would you term as "younger folk"? Del and many of her friends, in their 30s and 40s (some of the younger ones too, such as Soph and Becca) still shop for clothes in the high street, and in places where the personal touch is very much still in evidence [especially lingerie shops], and they LOVE that experience!:)
They meet up for a coffee and have a chat, do some shopping, then go for lunch, then more shopping afterwards, and have a great day out. Then I come to collect them and take them home in the car, as there are usually tons of bags to carry!:D
Isn't that a lot nicer mate, than sitting at home, on Amazon or whatever, clicking on a mouse?
Marco.
people who shop in tesco:ner:
oh and i like it personally as it was norm when younger. you found it easier to get what you wanted too but most dont want it. or they would all be in the shops doing it
Indeed, then you take my point that it's still possible to do these things? They haven't been wiped off the face of the earth yet;)
Tesco for clothes? You jest, surely... Lol, could you imagine Del 'wearing' that [pun intended:D]?
Tights for work, maybe, but that's about it!
Marco.
Yes but remember you and Del etc are not atypical of the great British public mate. Nor am I.
Why it happened? I guess it was price and profit margins, most things come down to those. Then most get used to it this way and prefer it, or think they do at least.
Look at how communities have become closed door individuals instead of open door walk ins for your neighbours as it once was.
So called progression isn't always good and usually has a human price to pay.
99% of neighbours here wouldn't notice if you'd been dead for a month, nor likely care.
Some very good points there, which I'll get to later. Rather ironically, I'm just about to take the princess shopping in Chester (food, garden centres, and no doubt shoes/clothes) and she's sitting glaring at me WANTING to go, so I better had!:D

Yes its a very good butcher, which has grown in the last few years, Ive not tried any of their wines yet, I normally drink red and happy to try anything, normally would average £10 per bottle but have a birthday coming up so I have an excuse to splash out. A question related to cars if I may.
It is time to replace the E46 Touring. Mrs H wants a car with a bigger boot, and preferably a Hybrid, so I have come up with a shortlist of two.
Passat GTe
Toymotor Corolla Sports Tourer (2 litre version).
Anybody have experience of these?

Here it is again :D I say something, you don't get it, therefore I'm not being clear. You say something, i don't get it, so I must be thick or something. It's something I used to get a lot from my brother, so it must be me...
It became clear to me a while ago: You prefer the 'human touch', and are critical of those who opt for automated transactions, blaming the decline of small and family run businesses on this, as they are aiding the onward march of what you call the "plastic world", as opposed to the real world folk out in the sticks inhabit. Us plastic world inhabitants use automation selectively, according to what best fits our lifestyle. As do you.
So to echo your previous question: What are we arguing about? The answer: a load of pish! It's what we do best! But I'm really not bothered, because next Monday we get our NEW CAR! :) I hope mentioning that on a Car/bike thread doesn't derail the important stuff we're discussing :ner:

Toyota/Lexus have been doing hybrids since the dawn of time, and will have learned a thing or two. That's where my money would go.

Black Volvo S60 D4 R-Design. With 37k miles, it looks and feels like a new 'un :) Sits slightly lower than the lesser-spec models and with bigger alloys. looks quite cool imo. Only 190bhp so not exactly a beast, but plenty quick enough for us old farts.
Speaking of which, the heated leather seats should help shift the aroma around, so our passengers can share the benefits of my morning trumps :) Automatic too, so should be a blessing for Anita's diagnosed dodgy left foot.
The dealership has some very nice cars for sale, and their standards/attention to detail are really impressive. I'll post a link to their website if I can, but it might take a while, you know what I'm like :)

I only linked to the website homepage so you could see the dealership I dealt with. I wasn't expecting my car to still be there. At the top of the homepage is a banner saying "search our cars". Can you guess what happens if you click on that? you get 10 pages of cars.
Understandable that you might not be arsed doing that. Why would you? It's only really of interest to me ;) But if it's because you're struggling to navigate that, then you're even worse than me, and I'm really bad :)
Lol - how can I be worse that you? I managed to link *directly* to your car, which is what you should've done in the first place [and what I thought you were trying to achieve]!:ner::ner:;)

You often link to a homepage of some restaurant you visited, without showing what you ate :) My link to dealership's homepage was for anyone who might be considering a change of car. As I said before, i was surprised to see my car still there...
God forbid there should be gratuitous pics of random nice cars for sale on this thread :) And talking about my change of car turning into yet another argument pees me off just a little  Still, I'm about to have me tea, that always cheers me up. Just don't ask what I'm having, I really haven't the energy.

Just don't ask what I'm having, I really haven't the energy.
And me! You and I often seem to have an incompatible style of written communication, resulting in frequent disputes and misunderstandings, and I've no idea why...:rolleyes:
The way I read it, we were discussing the new car you'd bought, then you said "here it is", so unsurprisingly I was expecting to be taken directly to a pic of your car. However, perhaps you meant, 'here is the dealer', in which case, that's fine. However, you can appreciate why I thought what I did.
You then had a dig at my IT skills, when I said that I was looking at something quite different from you, and you subsequently stating that my computer must've been broken, which was rather cheeky and uncalled for, especially when I hadn't done anything wrong!
When I was looking for a new car and at the Brabster (before you joined AoS), I posted links directly to the cars concerned, on the website of the relevant dealers, as I was asking for some opinions, so wanted to make it as easy for folks as possible to see exactly what I was looking at.
Also, it's not at all uncommon for dealers to leave cars that have been sold on their websites for a while afterwards (sometimes even a couple of days), until they get the chance to delete them, which indeed was the case with the Brabster, and also your car. Therefore, I was surprised you weren't aware of that practice and then called your dealers lazy sods... Plus, I was surprised that you hadn't checked beforehand if your car was still listed, as indeed I'd have done.
Anyway, I'm not getting into another argument, as like you, I'm getting rather fed up having discussions with you, about various things, and it ending this way, for whatever reason, especially when I'm very careful to explain myself clearly. So there should be no margin for error, yet with you there nearly always is, and I'm sure in that respect the feeling is mutual.
Therefore, I suggest we leave it there and move on, and perhaps give each other a bit of space for a while, as this isn't fun and doing neither of us any favours.
Marco.

I'll tackle your first point first... If you were to look back, you'd see me saying that I'd try to post a link to the dealer's website. In my next post I said 'here it is', and included the link. I didn't say there was a pic of my car as i didn't expect it to still be on there. The i looked at the link myself, saw my car was still there, and so i told you which page it was on. But you didn't know how to find that page. So I said you might be even worse than me with links (not possible!) I wouldn't call that a dig, but hey ho...

Yeah, totally. I just thought that when you were going to link to the dealer's website, it would be directly to your car, on said website. Otherwise, what would be the point, simply to be met with a homepage, not containing any pics of your car...

yeah pricy... was looking at merc site. the gla suv is available on motability, although not sure which models. quite a nice motor but likely i will go with something cheaper. a kona or a 2008, or maybe a skoda suv. vw tiguan too is an option. bmw x1 might just be too rich as well..

They are utterly horrid things, try driving one.
When Merc have to put inflating bolsters in the seats to stop one falling out of the window when cornering, then that should tell you how well they handle.
All but the latest ones use a steering box, so when you turn the wheel, its pot luck if anything happens.
I have driven god knows how many (including Gareth Bales pimped to fuck one) and they are utterly underwhelming.
Yes, they look good, but they are as agricultural as a Defender and a lot less reliable (and insanely expensive to service).
But apart from that, they're great.
Lol - sounds like a test drive is needed!:D
Remember though, that it [whatever she ends up getting] will largely be something for her to potter around in and take her friends out for shopping trips/act as a 'fashion accessory'/something to look cute.
No 'serious' driving will be done in it, and at max, about 3000 miles a year!

I just can't get my head around why anyone would want one at the cost.
When the Edition 1 came out a few years ago, we couldn't get enough of them to sell, and bear in mind when specced up they were north of £155K.
They really are for people who want to show their wealth and nothing else.
For example of how bad the some of the quality is, try using the central locking.
It sounds like an cheap French car from the 90's.

I had a friend who bought a new one years ago. He said it was the worst motor he'd ever owned, horrible to drive and the transmission destroyed itself a couple of times. He gave up and bought a big Alfa instead. He loved that one.
its not my idea of a merc i have to say, :D but ive seen worse too. i liked my bro's first merc the best; it was an amg and had a lovely set of lines inside and out. his last one wasnt so pretty but was obviously a nice motor and got great mpg considering its size. that motor looks too big for Del although ive not seen one close up.

Well, that certainly didn't enter our heads, as we're not wired that way. It got our attention because it looks cool, nothing else, plus I'm a sucker for matt paint finishes (grey or black), as I like the 'brutal' look.
However, all noted, and thanks for your insight. If it's a shite car, it's a shite car and won't be bought. If she likes it enough though, we'll still go and look at them and arrange a test drive, and I'll put it through its paces. I'm only guessing here, but if you want the one you pictured, that'll be well well over £130K.
You could buy a decent used S63AMG (which is a tremendous car) and still have enough change for a new property.
You could get the 6 wheel Brabus version

You won't be interested in the Cadillac Esplanade then.

Yeah that's the one. I think I might have sunstroke.
The 'Esplanade' was a poor selling UK derivative only available in towns that had a pier & funfair

Chances are, in a few years, when old V8 cars are still rumbling about gulping fuel, the average electric family saloon will just silently leave them for dead at the traffic lights! :)
Not saying that's how I'd want it, but it is how I see it.

true but then when the electric is sat e-charging for 40 minutes at the service station so it can do another 100 miles the V8 will just roar past it.

I said in a few years. Before long electric cars will have more range and need fewer charges. I'd expect to see roads with induction loops under the surface eventually too and they will charge suitably equipped vehicles while on the move. Ideal for motorways!
i think that is a long way off if it ever happens. Ten years ago people were saying 'Batteries ae getting better and the range problem will soon be solved.' Ten years on it's still an issue and I think it will still be an issue in another ten.

Two things with that, though. 300 miles is the maximum theoretically possible, not real world range. You have to accelerate up a hill to pass an HGV, there's 25 miles off your range right away.
it's cold or it's warm so you need the heater/ac on the whole way, another 50 odd miles knocked off.
The other problem is what if your destination is 320 miles away? You still have to stop for half an hour (at least) to re-charge just to go the last 20. And you might have to travel some distance out of your way to find charging point. You get there, they are all in use so you have to wait your turn, there's another hour, maybe more.

Lol, dunno. Teslas are certainly fast enough, but not sure about your average glorified 'electric shopping trolley'... That wouldn't bother me anyway, as I'd be driving something that looked cool (as opposed to a homogenised piece of soulless shite), illustrated that I wasn't a mindless sheep, and above all, was a damn sight more FUN!:ner:;)
Marco.
I red a review of a Tesla a few years back now where the reviewer decided to use it for his annual family holiday to the south of France - which he usually did in his ICE car (think it was a Jag).
Upshot was it took 12 hours more to make the trip because of all the recharging stops. Added to which although the fuel bill was less he ended up spending more because at each hour long recharge stop they would be spending money in the services whilst sat about waiting.
In the Jag he would just pull in, fill up, and off again, no additional expenses since the rest of the family didn't even get out of the car.
I guess motorway service station owners will love them though.

most folk say they get 300 plus or minus a little bit .. so fairly accurate but yes in cold state its gonna be lower. in winter you certainly would need a smart charger to warm it and batteries up. the way petrol prices are going its gonna be a rich mans game driving a proper car
petrol prices are artificially high because of the duty, not for any other reason. Tax it the same as electricity and it would be much cheaper.
The analysis by the RAC Foundation – which predates the steep falls in road traffic seen as a consequence of Covid-19 – was based on the MOT data for 516,936 vehicles.
Private cars are required to start having annual MOTs once they are three years old. At that point the mileage is recorded by the test venue and it is that information this research uses.
The results show that new diesel cars cover an average of 12,496 miles in each of their first three years.
This is 67% more than new petrol cars which only do an average of 7,490 miles per year.
Pure battery electric cars are driven an average of 9,435 miles per year. Looking at a selection of individual electric models:
forgot the link. lol.. https://www.racfoundation.org/media-centre/average-new-car-driven-28-miles-per-day there is more data in it. makes interesting reading tbh
petrol prices are artificially high because of the duty, not for any other reason. Tax it the same as electricity and it would be much cheaper.
yup but currently it isnt. petrol will get dearer, and im sure they will find a way to charge folk driving lecky cars too. if you fancy a few years cheap driving get a electric car now. 4 or 5 years and the benefits will be gone
Why is everything *always* about cheapness? That's ok if you're cheap!:ner:;)
The princess has declared that she's EXPENSIVE!!:D
Marco.
money is an issue for lots of folk alas. always has been i guess. and not everyone finds driving as exciting as maybe you or even i do. to some its just a means to an end.
Indeed, but I'm referring to the sheep who can afford it, yet seemingly have little concept of how to enjoy themselves - and that doesn't just apply to driving!!
Marco.
...the way petrol prices are going its gonna be a rich mans game driving a proper car
Glad you said "proper" lol, and of course in that respect you're right, but not necessarily with the latter. It would depend on how much driving you did.
It won't cost so much in fuel if said car spends more time parked outside the house, or in the garage, than on the road, such is the case if your car's used simply for pleasure, not work;)
Marco.

I'm sure that's true of some but all the wealthy people I know have a vehicle that is more expensive than it needs to be if their only interest was in relaibly getting from A to B.
Not necessarily 'driver's cars' though, I have a friend who could easily afford a Ferrari or something equally exotic but prefers his monster crew-cab pick up truck. No children just him and the Mrs and he has no practical use for a giant pick-up, he just likes it. Don't think the back seats have ever been sat in.

Best thing I ever did car-wise was getting a new small cheap runabout in 2014, it does all I need, goes well too, even on motorways. Sure a bit more wellie would be fun, but I don't need it. It's only done 23k, so bags of life left in it and it costs peanuts to run (comparatively :)). I could run something fancier, but with the mileage I do, there's not much point.
I clocked up 660 miles last year due to Covid.
I don't think the mileage matters, if you fancy a flash car and can afford it just have one, why deny yourself?
I knew a bloke who had a DB5, drove it a handful of times a year and then not very far. I asked him once why he didn't just sell it and he looked at me like I was insane. Just owning it gave him pleasure. It was the proper Bond one as well, in the gun metal grey.
Saw a guy on a site i use just did 480 odd miles and only had one charge, and still had half a battery left. Averaged about 340 miles on a charge. a kona actually. and he started with less than a full charge. witshire to manchester area and back i think

You get there, they are all in use so you have to wait your turn, there's another hour, maybe more.Fast public chargers are very fast. Topping up for 20 miles would almost certainly take less than 10 minutes with a decent car and a decent charger. Admittedly not all public chargers are that fast, but it is technically feasible to deploy very fast chargers. Some older EVs are not able to use the fastest chargers, but that restriction will gradually disappear. Some public chargers which are already quite fast are being upgraded to way beyond the limits of almost all cars re speed of charging.
One problem is that often the changes of doing something else while charging are stymied - and the local facililties are not up to it. Either the chargers are so fast that even if there is a coffee bar on the site, then it's not possible to order a coffee and cake in the time it takes to charge up the car - which might lead to excess time penalties, or as happened to me recently - the time is just about enough to have a pee, but the local authority has decided to close the toilets, necessitating a further stop 30 or so miles away for "natural" purposes.
Many people still only average a max of 200 miles a day - mostly much less than that, and a good EV can easily do that. Some people do travel long distances - for example weekly or even more frequent trips from far up in Scotland to Manchester or Liverpool - a distance of (say) 400 miles. Typically that would take around 7 hours in a petrol or diesel car, and most people would want to stop at least once. The drive time in a fast EV is similar - even including about 30 minutes of down time for charging.
It is indeed the case that in the winter having the heating on and the windscreen wipers etc. will reduce the range of an EV. Going up hills is not necessarily a major problem as a lot of the energy is recovered when the vehicle comes down on the other side.
I would like it if the real world range of EVs were closer to 400 miles than 300, but realistically for most people, most of the time, even 200 miles is good enough. Even charging on public chargers it's possible to do about 1000 miles for under £50 - whereas a fossil fuel car would probably consume around 17-20 gallons at a typical cost of around £120. For regular use and short distance journeys per day (under 200 miles total) costs can be reduced significantly by overnight charging.

Okay, there were never that many around, but they've all but vanished now. Apparently there are 40 left on the road in the UK. I quite liked them as a basic everyday runabout.
What other previously common cars are now nearly gone or disappeared altogether? Bet nobody's seen an Ital for a while.

Going from a fairly decent car to a c**ppy little car with stick shift to drive on foreign roads is not something I enjoy - though there are merits in having small cars - for example in the south of Italy where large cars might get stuck between stone walls.
Re long distance holidays - this web site might give an idea of charging and drive times - https://abetterrouteplanner.com/
I tried it with destinations of Bari and Gibraltar, and indeed in the case of Gibraltar the charge time was around 5 hours (one way) so would be 10+ hours there and back. However the distance is over 2000 miles and most of the time taken is still driving time.
I don't know what kinds of car people would use for long distance family holidays nowadays. We have used a van (VW) and a Volvo estate, as well as some really small cars. Arguably the Volvo was the best. I'm just not sure that many people want to drive long distances on holiday any more.
Trying to justify car purchase for one or two holidays a year doesn't really make sense - for most sane people. I don't think I'd want to take a Tesla to the south of France anyway - though the only time we had a problem with a car being broken into and things stolen was in France on a trip to Italy. Oddly the thieves took a bag of clothes, but didn't take some of the more valuable stuff.
I think a lot of people still use their car to go abroad - I know a fair few.
Plenty of people will not get on a plane under any circumstances, and some will not get on a boat either.
If you've used your car to go on holiday every year for decades then I think it would certainly be a consideration when buying a new one. People want their cars to do everything they require since that is what they have become used to over decades. It requires the EVs to improve, not for people to settle for less.

I suppose using the Eurotunnel will give better protection from Covid, but we always preferred the ferry - it gave a little driving break to the journey, and more interesting than watching a tunnel wall rushing past.
We once took the bikes through Spain and Andorra, and got over there via a ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbau. Took 2 days, but it was bit like a mini-cruise, with cabaret, bingo and cinema (we watched Tarantino's "Sin City").
The return trip was more entertaining though. The sea was so rough, glasses and plates were sliding up and down tables and seasickness was rife - I watched one young woman crawling to the toilets on her hands and knees, vomiting as she went, with a toddler hanging on to her skirt. A pitiful sight, and I felt a bit guilty about sniggering, not so my mate, shouting better out than in :)
I would have no qualms about using ferries, especially if they're going to be half empty. And they were always cheaper than the tunnel.
As for doing it in an EV - not a chance! I'm not even sure if rural France has electric, despite having more wind turbines than people
I did Liverpool to Dublin in a Force 9 once time. I don't get seasick but that wasn't the case with most of the passengers. The crossing took 12 hours and by the end of it the whole boat was carpeted in puke.
Thinking back it's a wonder we didn't sink the weather was that bad. All the day's crossings after that one were cancelled.

As for doing it in an EV - not a chance! I'm not even sure if rural France has electric, despite having more wind turbines than people :doh:It'll get better. Right now I think Tesla drivers have the best options, though perhaps in time the manufacturers of other EVs will also set up good charging networks. VW is likely to be in a good position to do that. I think that if necessary one could take a slow charger and run that off the local mains supply, though that is a pretty poor option. It seems likely that there will be an increase in the number of moderate to fast chargers - for example in hotel car parks and maybe even camp sites.
If I were going anywhere remote I'd want to know that there was adequate backup. We have in the past had problems even with petrol. In one case we took a tortuous route over and around mountains, and ended up with hardly any petrol in a small village in Spain. No garage - but after asking around we found the lady who ran a local bar kept a supply. At least with electricity one could hopefully eventually get sufficient charge to move on in most places - though it could take a long while maybe even 24 hours for a full charge.
I wouldnn't contemplate doing a journey like that in a Nissan Leaf. Renault Zoes are quite good as little runabouts and I've met people who have travelled relatively long distances in those. Inverness to Applecross and back is just about possible without having to charge up again, but it's very tough. At least if things go wrong in the UK hopefully there will be people who can help - though there can be silly problems. One pair I met in a Zoe had to spend an extra night in one place - not because the charging was slow - but because the cable at one public charger would not release from their car, and nobody was able to help them until the following day. Total bummer!

Do you have to 'stamp down' on the pedal to make it really shift? That's what it's like with automatics. Anita was unimpressed with the Volvo's performance till I told her what to do, then it was "Wayhay! This is more like it" :)

Must be better tyres than they used to put on the old Prius, which I remember winning the "Comedy handling" award on Top Gear. Probably designed to reduce rolling resistance, for better range.
Mrs. P still loves the C-HR's looks :) Toyota (and Lexus) have put out some really sharp designs in recent years imo.

It's a Toyota isn't it? I thought most of those have a specially designed transmission - so not quite a CVT as implemented in many other automatics, and the engines don't use quite the same approach as most petrol engines. The Toyota I used to drive was absolutely hopeless in snow, and if it snowed in Surrey I had to take a run at the short "hill" in our road, and keep revving up in order to get to the top - not far - perhaps 100 yards, but didn't always make it. Coming down was a nightmare it would slither from one side to the other, usually bumping into the kerbs.
If yours is good in snow then things must have improved quite a bit. On the other hand a Hyundai i10 - which is still going - would just go straight down without losing control.
its a chr with a planetary E-CVT. its an intelligent transmission that has an infinite number of gear ratios at its disposal. By constantly analysing vehicle speed, road conditions, engine power and driver input, it selects the optimal (most efficient) gear ratio for that precise moment. Obviously you need to help it to an extent as just hitting the floor wont cut it. it is important to watch the revs

E10 will not be compatible with some garden power tools. Engines with carburettors will have incorrect air/fuel mixtures. Two strokes will suffer wear. Available lead substitutes for much older engines may no longer be as effective.
In theory, all the above can potentially be sorted, but is it worth it?
Pigmy Pony

Is this a bit like when they did away with four star? Perhaps changes to mixture and/or timing is required? I used to run my old Golf GTI on four star but flogged it before the changes, so never had to do anything.
E10 petrol based fuel will be introduced in September and about a million cars in the UK are anticipated to be unsuitable to use it in. The current E5 petrol/alcohol blend will continue to be available for now, but it may be worth looking into if you have an older vehicle.
There's a list of incompatible cars here: https://www.thesun.co.uk/money/15971272/which-cars-cant-use-e10-petrol-fuel-switch/
This list may not be comprehensive.
More Ethanol also means poorer economy. The incompatibility is mainly the fuel lines, so it is potentially dangerous.
Here in France we have been using E10 for a while now. When I heard it was coming in, I changed the flexible fuel lines on my Caterham, but not everybody is aware of the need, or is capable of doing it.
The problem appears to be significant. It is believed that the higher bioethanol content in E10 petrol could dislodge deposits in older engines and fuel systems, causing blockages; it could also cause some seals, gaskets, metals and plastics to corrode.
taken from whatcar..
e5 will be available i think in form of higher grade unleaded, but at a price.

my tesco pump has e10 written on it.. i wonder if they are already using it
I remembered to look yesterday when filling up. and my local Sainsbury's are also doing E10 petrol. Must be what it is, they wouldn't be allowed to label it incorrectly, even temporarily. The label also advises checking your vehicle's suitability.
Probably best I avoid using it, especially as my van is diesel :)

I think it said on the radio today (if I understand this correctly) that E10 will cause rustiness in petrol tanks and cause water to get into the carbs/injectors/engine when restarted if left unused for long periods, like with lawnmowers. This would then apply to my Fireblade, which only does about 1000 miles in the summer and nowt in the winter.
So would switching to the super unleaded (which I think is E5) be the answer, or am I missing something?

No you’re not. There are also additives for E10 to prevent this.

Cheers Ali, just had half hour reading up on this, and am going to get some fuel stabilizer today.
One good thing about all this E10 fuel publicity is that it's highlighted a (potential) problem I never knew existed. The bike's put up with crappy fuel for all of its 17 years and never grumbled once. God bless Honda :)
I'd only ever put Super Unleaded in my bike (E5 as it is now categorised) - and added some Liqui Moly 8365 fuel system treatment - I don't think carbs like the new E10 at all.
Back in the 80's I would find the time for Five Star, come rain or shine. Guess I was a system addict? ;)

Funny how car insurance works. My renewal notice came a couple of weeks ago and it recommended renewing online to qualify for a £10 discount. Needless to say I ignored that and phoned up to renew instead, as I do each year. My quote was £594 (£584 online) and I told them I wanted to pay less. With bit of checking they came back with a £534 price which I accepted. That's a £60 saving just from haggling a bit, well worth the phone call!

Well. On Friday, a mechanic from a nearby car repairer's managed to reverse into my parked car. He was decent enough to bang on my door and let me know and called his associate to repair the creased wing. It was taken yesterday and returned just now looking like new, excellent job and no insurance claim needed. Nice bloke and very nice job done.

Costs -wise, it's probably going to work out cheaper than a hybrid, if you don't do a lot of miles. I'm guessing that apart from looks, the most important thing is ease of getting in and out of it.

There are still some decent folk about, like me :)
A few years ago we were replacing some cast iron guttering on a terraced house, when a four foot piece got away from us, bounced off the pavement and struck this Fiat Stilo, that was actually for sale. I phoned my brother (who I worked for at the time) to see if liability insurance would cover it, and his first words were "Did anyone see you do it?"
I knocked on a few doors to find the owner, who was really pleased I hadn't just done one. I gave him £300 to cover £100 replacement of rear quarter light, and £200 for him to knock off the asking price for the scarred c-pillar. Apparently the buyer was more than happy with that, though I've no way of knowing if the owner didn't just pocket the cash. But at least I slept soundly that night :)

It's really just a petrol but has a mild hybrid battery that only deals with taking up some of the electrical work, mostly I think in stop start situations so engine can go off. It doesn't run engine like mine does.

might reduce a bit in colder weather, but should still get good figures. i lose abot 12/15% efficiency in winter, but even petrol only do that
My battery performance has improved, as there is more traffic on the road, and I cannot drive as fast. I used 35% battery to get to work today, with my headlights on, and aircon running, and 40% getting home, as I could drive a bit faster.
Still happy with the car.
I am averaging over 140mpg at the moment, due to the short daily journeys, which can be done on 100% battery power.
I think the Aston will beat the Rangie, Adam, in the repair costs... (Vantage V8?) One of my mates, a serial car swapper has had several Astons, but either new or nearly new - I think I'd be papping myself with one that old, but they are a fantastic car.

Update on public EV chargers in Scotland.
Very limited success. A few days ago - 1 out of 1. Yesterday 1 out of 4. Plus a conversation by one charger at which someone else said he'd never managed to get a ChargePlace Scotland charger to work - certainly not with a phone app.
The one success was a fast charger - notionally 30p per kWh - but the numbers didn't quite work out. Claimed output was 10 kWh, but £3.58 posted to credit card account. Another charger - Osprey - would have been 40p per unit (nominal) but didn't work. Yet another charger should have been free with a BP card, but sadly the genius who designed the parking space didn't allow enough space to get the car in together with the cable - not totally unusual - and worse than that we never found out whether it would have worked or not as some "person" with a hybrid car had not only parked in the EV space, but managed to park so badly that there was no way that anyone with an EV would ever be able to get into the space. Oh - there was another charger which required cable connection - but that just didn't work.
So on one day we got 100% success - while another day we were down to around 20%. The people who design charger spaces don't seem to realise that many cars (stupidly IMO) have the charging point in roughly the same place that a petrol filler cap would be on a petrol car, and then put the chargers at right angles to the road way, so that reversing in is necessary. It's not so bad in public car parks if there is enough space allocated, but on public roads this is a real hazard. It doesn't even help so much for the (more sensible) cars which have front connection points, as then the driver may have to reverse back into traffic to leave.
Jeez... Who could be bothered with all that pish?

But an oil burner never really sounds right…
In your opinion... The Brabster's, straight-through quad sports exhaust (with DPF and EGR delete) sound fab - lovely deep growl. In any case, at least it SOUNDS.... i.e. makes a noise like an engine!!
Silencio, me no likely.

Of course it is my opinion.
I have never heard your car, but I have heard others fitted with a sports exhaust.
DPF and EGR bypass are easy to deal with at MOT time?
Yup, if you have a good understanding with the garage in question;)
I agree that, when tuned with sports exhausts, high-performance petrol engines usually have a better sound, and in comparison mine isn't as loud, but it still makes a nice growl!:D

I may have to do a search to see if I can change my engine noise emulator to sound like a V8.

Awesome answer, but unfortunately wrong on so many levels, lol!
Firstly, the 'spokes & chrome' thang really only applies to bikes. There are only a few vintage cars I like with spoked wheels. Chrome yes, as I like polishing things:eyebrows:
Secondly, Del looks comically ridiculous in the Brabster (especially driving it everywhere at 40mph). It's *soo* NOT her, just not a girly car. If she got it though, she'd probably try turning it into one!
She'll get something suitable of her own in due course. The driving force for that isn't as strong as it was, as she now works in town, rather than 15 miles away, so walks to college most days - and more importantly, LIKES being chauffeured around like a princess!:D
I'd love an H2, but I suspect my biking days are over, as these days I like my creature comforts too much! I had my fill of frostbitten fingers and snot when I was younger, lol. Maybe if we ever move abroad to a warmer climate:)

My first bike was a GT250, reg no. LED 556P. Look at that, still remember the reg number after 40 odd years! It was definitely the worst bike I ever had though - before I rode it on the road I did a half day riding course in a school playground, and it packed up halfway through and was trailered back to the shop :( And it wouldn't go round corners without crashing, though some of that might have been me :)
When a few months later I took it to a dealers to trade in for my next bike (Suzuki X7) it died on the dealers forecourt, and it sounded terminal.

I think I know the model, look a bit like an Enfield or old Triumph. But no doubt the more important parts of it will be pretty up yo date while appearing to be vintage. Much easier to live with than a genuinely old bike.
20 years ago I had one of these, even same colour. Very retro (Jap) bike, but very torquey, very comfortable and had some presence on the road. Shame I had to write it off :(

Brother in law recently picked up a Kawasaki W800. It’s about 8 years old, but another Retro model.
He quite likes it.
I wasn't aware of that model, but pictures show that it's clearly an evolution of the W650, which in itself is pretty reminiscent of the Yamaha XS-650 I had in the Eighties.

That's a gorgeous bike, Geoff - sex on wheels!

In about '78/79 Yamaha did a custom version of that XS650, called "Special". I really wanted one at the time but couldn't afford it. It later became the XS650 "US Custom" but didn't look quite as good. I think they did a 250 and 400cc version too.
But a year later I did get one of these

Nice, looks as if it would shift, too!
You can see the attraction of these bikes though, can't you, and get why (at least I) think they look good? I know that, in terms of pretty much everything else, modern bikes eat them alive, and would leave them standing in a race, but for me that's not the point.
There's a fun factor and certain 'charm' about them that is absent in modern bikes, as awesome as they are from an engineering/performance P.O.V. Plus, much like with, say, hi-fi, I bet you could 'pimp' them (sympathetically) with the best modern parts, to improve key aspects of their performance, and to an extent get the 'best of both worlds'?
If I had one, that's probably what I would do, but not to the extent of spoiling what the bike was meant to be in the first place:)
Marco.
trouble with bikes is its way too easy to do yourself major harm, even in a minor episode. thats why i got shot of mine
Oh I know lol, I used to fall off mine regularly, to the extent that my dad called me the 'horizontal champion'!:D Fortunately, I didn't do myself any major harm, as the accidents were at low speeds.
The fun factor makes up for the risk, though, especially when you're younger. The princess would love me to get one, as she LOVES going fast on the back of bikes (and she'd probably look quite good in leathers:eyebrows:), and gets silly-excited on bikes, but it's not likely to happen.

My mate had one and I borrowed it, while he rode my slightly tweaked Kawasaki H-1. All I could hear when he got back was him going "Jesus Christ!, Jesus Christ!!". The power delivery was a little different to what he was used to :).
.
a guy i knew chopped his head off by hitting rear of a truck in fog... just a lad really..
Probably in the days when helmets weren't mandatory?
I try not to bring up the subject of bikes in front of Del, as if I give her any encouragement at all, she'll WANT one! You know what she's like, lol. And then WANT taken here there and everywhere on it...
You what she's like on her peddle bike:eek: I'd never get any peace!
Marco.
yup, she probably would lol.
no guy had helmet on... hit back of a flatbed that had broken down at side of road.. he just ploughed into it at neck height.. nasty, but quick. tbf, if he had been in a car it would likely have been a similar ending.
Nasty... Would make a good scene for a horror movie, though!
Marco.
Just ordered one of these..
I must be mad [emoji23] https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210917/d0e759fe7b1d3c46a7ffd8807fc63185.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210917/75af9dad9dabf610216c5dde1f721c12.jpg
