Yes, I like the shape. I love the way that this 14 year old car drives.
It is not without it’s faults, most of which I have ironed out - like replacing crap OEM metalastic bushes with poly bushes etc.

Awesome Monaro, really nice V8 under the hood.
They sound like only a V8 can.

New straight through stainless exhaust fitted to my Alfa Brera today?

Exhaust Guy loved the Alfa engine note when I first brought it around and we agreed the new exhaust should bring more of that out, so he kept the stainless Prodrive backboxes and manufactured a straight thru stainless system to fit in with them.
Didnt want boy racer Subaru levels of noise, unbecoming of an italian thoroughbred you know. :D

The new exhaust?
Gutsier, deeper, seismic, louder, spit and bark that wasnt there before but most importantly keeping the same character.

He texted to say the car was ready, I asked him how it sounded?
”possibly the best 4 cylinder engine I’ve heard, sounds exotic and Italian”
After picking up car and going away he asked me if I would let him hear it from outside the car as he hadnt heard it, and give it the beans as I drove away.
He was grinning as I drove away....bloody loved it!

Alfas are one of the marques that make you feel special, (another pound in the James May swear box!) and all I’ve done is bring more Alfa-ness out of what was there already. Big grin whenever I get in the car before, more so now.

Only cost me £200 quid, guy really knows his stuff and anyone in Central scotland needing sn exhaust, seriously...he’s your go to guy.

I don't want to turn this into a love-in, but I love the Alfas. Just about as stylish as you can get.

Nice one, Gaz. Glad it worked out well. Good price, too!

So aside from the improved 'noise' [and that sounds quite sexy] have you noticed any increase in engine responsiveness? :)

Marco.

P.S Does it look any different from the back (did you change the tips)?

Not just the noise it makes going down the road thats changed Marco, what happens when I press my right foot has too.

Feels smoother and less ‘gritty’ under accelleration as well as the pickup at lower revs being much more responsive.
The cars already been remapped so maybe getting a better sense of what’s under the bonnet now its able to breathe a bit easier?

Going to my remap guy who’s going to tweak it to suit, now the airflows changed with the new exhaust, should be good.

Looks similar to before after new exhaust?
He kept the Prodrive backboxes so the exhaust looks the same as before, though with the rebuild the chrome tips stick out a couple of inches more than before, which can’t be a bad thing. :)

HSV GTO LS2 (aka Monaro VXR)

Nice ride and well done for being an individual and not goiing with the crowds usual Merc, Audi, BMW option :D

Clarkson / top gear rated it very highly. Speedy Ozzies love em too - I think they're called the Holden over there :)

The 'standard' Monaro is a Holden, but the 'non-standard' Monaro is designated HSV GTO (HSV = Holden Special Vehicles). They came across and were given a few small changes; Vauxhall badges, seats with VXR decals, and I think the steering rack is changed(?).
It is just an industrial brute, but a lot of fun with it. I took it out on Friday, and spinning in the conditions gave me 12 mpg over the 15 miles!
Oh, it's a Pontiac GTO in the States, as it was exported there too.

I've been down the two seater (VX220), German six pot banger (BMW 130i), Japanese rally rep (WRX) and the HSV is something else.

Vauxhall / General Motors have produced a good few 'speedster' over the years.

I used to have a lovely graphite black metallic Astra GTE 16V, Full twin (rectangular) Scorpion stainless steal exhaust, 5 spoke alloys, the lot. Used to get a lot of nods in that thing it was my pride and joy and spotless minty.

Quick thing it was then. Wish I'd have held on to it as they fetch daft money now

Indeed, no doubt they'll be a well gaurded Vauxhall Lotus Carlton on show at their museum in Luton amongst untold other gems of every order - Viva's, Firenzas.......

The Loutus Carlton was one heck of an effort from Vauxhall, a classic literally from the off and one in the eye for the Sierra Cosworth brigade I remember.

Another one now going for big big bucks especially if in top order.

Great cars, typically solid VW build and better sorted in terms of overall handling than the GTE.

I had a good few 'rows' in the GTE 16V and in a straight line it was a rocket. The twisty stuf though was more of a fight.

Car prices have gone through the roof in the past few years; I reckon a little bit of re-adjustment will happen in the next few years when the interest rate goes up; there'll no longer be a need to regard a car as an alternative to conventional investment.

But it was such a target for thieving scrotes. Took it to Glastonbury in '93, great drive down there plenty of good sounds with the Alpine stereo. That's only UK and Europe though. I'll bet they keep selling them elsewhere.

This 'clean air' thing is getting rather wearing. Compared to the coal burning sixties, fifties and earlier, the air in this country is very safe to breathe nowadays. Anyway, even if everybody ends up using electric cars, there'll eventually come a time when they'll have to start mining and burning our huge reserves of coal to generate the power needed.

As a performance diesel car driver (and will be until the day I pop my clogs), I'll continue to buy used, so as they'll be 1000s of suitable cars to chose from next time I renew mine, the content of the article means jack shit!

We saw how resolute the government's intent was over the deadline for killing off of analogue radio, approaching twenty years past it now!

I agree, however my dog in the fight is this - if the more polluting vehicles are removed from the scene, then it is more likely that my car and others of the same ilk might be able to exist. I don't care much for the clean air and electric car 'coming of the messiah' business which is fatally flawed, exactly as you described it. Let's not forget the lithium and cobalt mining that has to go on to maintain the Tesla factory; Lithium use by Tesla last year was more than the entire mined stock of Lithium in 2013. It isn't my bag at all.

Well, my car is a weekend car so doesn't go out that often. But it still has its cats on and hasn't been modified to pollute any more than when it left the factory so I feel I can take the high ground and be 'selfish' about this.

Also, in terms of your weekend car being driven, how often is 'not that often'. On average, how many miles does it do in a week?

I cycle or catch a bus to work....more often than not cycle. The amount of cars per driver in my household is '1'.

Also, it doesn't take a petrolhead much to be able to best guess the performance of any car, especially with the information you have given. Most importantly, a car with performance is not a performance car. I have owned other cars which are relatively high powered but are not performance cars, by virtue of their weight, handling, power delivery etc. So because a standard car has been mapped doesn't make it a performance car. Especially not, in my humble opinion, a diesel.

that is reason i think the road tax should be scrapped and tax be on fuel, so the bigger polluters pay most. only fair imv. rich folk wont agree i guess but is it fair i get charged well over £200 for a fairly modern petrol car that does about 1800 miles a year and others burn gas like its going out of fashion, do 40k a year and pay pennies.

The difference with diesel engines is the particulates they output are very small and cannot be effectively filtered by the lungs. As a consequence they are far more hazardous to health than emissions from a petrol engine. To effectively filter them will massively reduce the performance of the engine, which is why the car manufacturers were lying about their emissions figures, something that has now brought the whole matter to a head.

There is unlikely to be a blanket ban on any type of engine however I think it is very likely that production of diesel engine cars will cease entirely within the next ten years.

Less likely now with things going electric. How would you tax that? You could do it at service stations, but what about home charging, which is available now? It would be very unpopular to insist on separate metering.

Yups... And besides, how exactly do you define a "performance car'? Does it have to be a Ferrari, McLaren or what...?

The Brabster's recently been through the dyno of my engine specialist [I hesitate to refer to him simply as a 'mechanic', because his expertise extends well beyond that] and measured just under 310bhp, with 510Nm of torque. Trust me, when you 'floor it', it SHIFTS!!

Of course, it's not the fastest thing on the road, but it was never bought, or designed for such a purpose. However, I've still managed to roast a few 'petrolheads' in 'performance cars', who, much like the rather misinformed Mr 'argyle', think that I'm just driving a glorified taxi!

With diesel vehicles are not talking about global pollution but local pollution at street level.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM), sometimes also called diesel exhaust particles (DEP), is the particulate component of diesel exhaust, which includes diesel soot and aerosols such as ash particulates, metallic abrasion particles, sulfates, and silicates. When released into the atmosphere, DPM can take the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, with most in the invisible sub-micrometre range of 100nanometers, also known as ultrafine particles (UFP) or PM0.1.
The main particulate fraction of diesel exhaust consists of fine particles. Because of their small size, inhaled particles may easily penetrate deep into the lungs.[1] The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the exhaust stimulate nerves in the lungs, causing reflex coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.[48] The rough surfaces of these particles makes it easy for them to bind with other toxins in the environment, thus increasing the hazards of particle inhalation.[

Been in a few pretty fast unmapped diesels. I owned a fairly fast one that could hold its own with any petrol eq. It was pretty clean, got great mileage etc, and although decently big estate could if driven properly get over 50mph. My brothers small diesel got 66mph and was fairly nippy. This govt anti diesel crap will fall eventually when it becomes it or them.
As for battery cars..jeez, gimme a break. They are even bigger pollutants . Energy costs to make and break are staggering

Grant, I'm hoping you meant 50 mpg, not mph, otherwise it's not a very good case for diesels! Unless your motor was made by John Deere or Massey Ferguson.

My definition of performance cars (diesel or petrol) is quite simple. If it has been tuned for performance rather than for economy, it's a performance car. Much like hifi - if it was made with the intention to provide a faithful reproduction of music, it is hifi, regardless of how much it costs.

But as with many other things, I could be wrong!

Oh I don't know. It was Jeremy Clarkson who said 'no matter how fast your car is, everybody averages 50 mph' and of course, he was right. The only thing extra power and speed does is get you to the next tail back or other hold-up quicker.

No you're not - you're 100% right! In terms of the bit in bold, *by definition* that's exactly what it is, not what someone's anti-diesel agenda would like it to be instead!;)

Indeed, old chap, how remiss of me.

I don't know yet what my next car will be, but until, or if, I decide to be completely frivolous, it'll always have to mix practicality with performance. Don't mind Jags, but I prefer the 'proper' ones that they used to make, such as Steed (from The Avengers) drove!

I've seen a few bespoke 'race tuned' versions, which are rather sexy... I've also yet to have an Alfa in my life, and given my Italian heritage, that's bordering on sacrilege!

I rather like the new Giulia:

Bought from a company called Fuel exhaust's who are based in the lakes and provided great customer service, order placed on Monday and delivered on Friday after an email the day before advising me if dispatch. Build wise it feels very well put together and as I say it sounds great.

Hi Ben,

Nice can, looks well and suits your bike I think.

Is it road legal, or is it one with removable baffle, or is it stamped 'not for road use'?

I bought a pair of cans for an XJR1300 I had about 15 years ago, which had this stamped on them. I considered polishing it out, but was told that would be a much more serious offence. Anyway, I managed to write it off before it came to the attention of Plod. Lucky me!

I've considered putting an aftermarket exhaust on my '03 FireBlade, and I think one like yours would be just the job (titanium colour though).

Zoidburg

Fuel offer various options but mine is "road legal" with all necessary stamps etc. It has a removable baffle which I will be experimenting with next time out. However even with the baffle in place its loud enough to hear what's going on (I ride with ear plugs in too).

I'm very impressed with it on all fronts and it was very reasonably priced too.

The excuses given for the high prices are ridiculous.

The cost of 'round the clock opening', So they have the opportunity to sell more and it costs them?

'prices reflect the cost of building and running services', well so it does at any other place that sells fuel.

I think most do. But no doubt it will still be possible to get caught out. Not a great scenario. Imagine your car failing the MOT and being told the test station will be unable to immediately carry out necessary remedial work. What do you do, leave it there until it can be dealt with, at a cost if they have room, or worse, be told to trailer it away.

Pigmy Pony
02-04-2018, 19:08
The MOT certificate is a legal requirement, but is no guarantee of a vehicle's roadworthiness. It only shows that the vehicle was roadworthy on the date of issue. It is the responsibility of the registered keeper to maintain its roadworthiness throughout the year.

Tyres are a case in point. If your vehicle is found to have bald tyres, showing the police that the tyres were fine at the time of its last MOT would be no defence.

walpurgis
02-04-2018, 19:20
The situation now is a bit different. If your car fails the MOT, you will of course be immediately aware of any defects and now that information will also be immediately added to the PNC, so you will be unable to drive your car away until sorted, unless you want ANPR cameras to pick you up driving illegally.

I know where you're coming from, but if those are the new rules, then you just have to be prepared. If you take your car to be MOT'd at a garage that regularly services your car, then they'll almost certainly do their best to store your car, if the necessary work for it to pass can't be done there and then.

That would certainly be the scenario for me, or they'd lose my future business!! You've got to look after your best customers;)

However, 9 times out of 10, my car sails through its MOT, as I keep on top of anything that's needing done, certainly obvious stuff, like tyres.

Absolutely Marco

There is a lot to be said from always using one garage for both your MOT's and services, like we do with our Toyota's

There is also a lot to be said for having your car in otherwise tip top condition before putting it in for a service or MOT

It's another bit of nonsense legislation, the implications of which have obviously not been thought through.

We had the same with the requirement for an annually repeated SORN, needing vehicle collectors to re-do this for each vehicle every year. Fortunately, common sense eventually prevailed and the annual SORN was replaced by having to do it only once.

Marco

It's just common sense for me, Bev, rather than using some 'faceless' MOT station, where you're not known from Adam. In the worst scenario, with the garage I go to, I'd be given a courtesy car to use until mine was ready.

That's where it pays to build good relationships with people.

Marco.

Asbolutely Marco... I am quite sure that these MOT stations offering 'cheap' MOT's are just after your business for 'extra' work

We always get a nice new courtesy car from Toyota

To be honest we thought that these 'plate glass' Toyota dealers were just after our money but our local Toyota dealer has been absolutely nothing like that and have been very fair and priced very competitively

Colin had an MOT failure last year due to very worn brake discs, calipers and pads on the front, bare in mind that these are massive due to the vehicle weighing 2.5 ton... the quote from Toyota was about £2.5k which also involved using a local welder to remove the locking wheel nuts as the original nut removal tool had been lost by a 'back street' garage..

Toyota have this scheme to keep older Toyota's on the road so the bill was reduced to a mere £600 'ish for new front discs new calipers and new pads... a bit of a bargain and that included the welder to remove the locking wheel nuts

I finally found out today what my surprise 60th birthday treat from my daughters is.

It was a few laps in some fast cars. Wahaay!

I got to drive an Audi R8 (didn't know it was a car, thought it was a scouse greeting), a Ferrari 458, and the star (for me) a Lamborghini Aventador, which has 700 bhp, top speed 215mph and 0-60 2.9 seconds (not with me driving though).

My first drive out had the instructor a bit worried, not because of my excessive speed, but because I was suffering with "cone confusion". I'm glad they had a word for it, shows I'm not alone. :) It would have been easier if they'd had MORE cones (that way I'd be more inclined to go round them, and not between them!)

I doubt I went over 80 the whole time, for fear of binning a car which was worth more than my house, but still good fun.

I finished with a "hot lap" as a passenger in a Vauxhall VXR8. Now that was scary fast, but then these guys do it every day (for wages, what a crap job eh?)

My daughters took me for a nice lunch afterwards, then it was time to race home in my Honda Civic 2.2 litre single turbocharged diesel with front wheel drive and a heady 140bhp on tap.

If I flogged all my Hifi I could probably stretch to a lambo steering wheel, then I can sit at home with the wheel, making engine noises, almost like the real thing.

Give it a generation or so and petrol and diesel piston engined cars will be regarded in the same way as old piston engined biplanes are as compared to modern jet aircraft.

The range and charging time issues with electric cars will be overcome and ultra smooth, near silent and powerful motors with linear delivery will become the norm, no awkward power peaks or any need for gear changing. Vehicle servicing will become much less frequently needed, which is an attractive thought.

Unfortunately, autonomous, self driving vehicles will probably become the norm, so any prospect of fun on the road will end!!

And don't think you can save an old 'classic' car to bomb around in for enjoyment. By then, there won't be anywhere to buy fuel for it. So tough luck!

I'm sure a competent electrician to adapt a street lamp to be a charging point. In fact that would probably work, make all lamp posts charging stations. Users could pay an agreed monthly fee to the local council to use them.

You would have to park on the same side of the road as the charging point though, we don't want to be garrotting folk.

I'm a horse guy, and a cart enthusiast, so I like to hear a nice horse fart when I'm driving, or when I say "giddy up", and of course I like the whole 'tweaky' aspect of feeding the horse different types of hay and mucking out their stables, so for me a car is a total anathema.

They're fine if all a car to you is a method of 'getting from A to B', but not if you're a passionate 'horse head' like me!

Sincerely yours,
Duncan Smellington-Fish esq.

p.s. that "gramophone" you bought will never catch on, people want to hear the real thing.

Well, at least horses are 'real'... Riding one, properly, will be a damn sight more exhilarating than driving a nondescript electric car!;)

I absolutely abhor how the government and society are trying to 'sanitise' our lives and suck the fun out of living. It's happening in various ways; controlling the types of cars we drive, being but one, and we need to fight against it, not comply with it!

Driving a nice car should STIR YOUR SENSES, not put you to sleep!!

Marco [fighting to keep the FUN in life].

Not stupid, this government.

First they demonise drivers of fossil-fuelled cars, giving the "tree huggers" a target for their vitriol. Like they need a target.

Then they get the public thinking, "Ooh, that electric car looks nice, should be very economical (no fuel to put in), no road tax, and we're saving the planet!" :)

Of course when we're all committed to electric cars, electricity will be taxed to buggery, road tax will return, and the resources needed to make the batteries will come close to depletion, creating more global "doom".

I for one will be keeping my plasma room-heating TV, my lovely 300b room-heating valve amp, and they'll have to pry my car and bike keys from my cold, dead fingers.

Why are "family cars" big? Surely smaller cars are better suited.

Large cars mean large boots, forcing you to carry far too much "kid crap" everywhere with you.

Also large cars have a lot more rear leg room, putting the kids out of slapping range. :( How are you supposed to maintain discipline? By text?

I would suggest a much better family car would be a motorbike and sidecar. You would have to wear a helmet, so you don't have to hear the incessant "are we nearly there yet?" or "I need the toilet". Also, only room for one passenger, so no more arguments. The others can get the bus.

Traditional ways of enforcing discipline in the car (to my recollection and in order of escalation):

1) If you don't behave I'm stopping this car.

2) I really mean it, I'll stop the car and you can get out and walk the rest of the way

3) Right if you don't stop it I'm going to stop the car and come round there and give you a belt.

4) I'm going to stop the car! I mean it!

5) Right I'm stopping the car!

6) Stop the car

7) Get out, administer belt.

Then you're good for about ten minutes until it all starts up again and you go back to stage 1.

From today, learner drivers can use motorways. I dread to think how that will turn out!

Marco

I think it's a great idea (in the company of an instructor, as outlined), and LONG overdue!

Quite simply, it was utterly ridiculous that you could pass a driving test, with zero experience of using a motorway, and then be expected to go on one and know what you're doing...:mental:

As any driver knows, motorway driving, because of the speeds involved, is totally different to any other kind of driving, especially in terms of judging distances and the speed of oncoming traffic, so new drivers really have to be properly trained in how to use them, before being unleashed on them.

Therefore, I'm glad to see that's now happening. It should definitely help improve safety, although it should also be made part of the test. Next what they need to do is make some form of basic mechanical knowledge part of the test (as most don't have a clue), and teach new drivers how to drive in the snow!!

Not indicating has been the fashion round here for years although indicating after performing the manoeuvre is now catching on too.

Doing 30 in a 40 zone is also traditional, you must be over 60 and in a small Japanese or Korean car*, pick a good dual carriageway in rush hour and just dawdle along, see how far you can get the tailback to stretch.

* 20 years ago it would have been a Triumph Acclaim or a Rover 214, however today's participants are the now ageing sons of those original pioneers. They are unable to replicate the cars exactly due to them having rusted away in the intervening decades; consequently they have had to go to the far east manufacturers to find suitably uninspiring vehicular replacements, Daewoo are especially recommended.

They usually get the message when you overtake, and then (safely) slow down in front of them to 5mph, so that this time YOU are holding THEM up:D. Then hold that position for a bit, and for watch their reaction in your rear-view mirror!;)

Then give them a nice big 'two-fingered salute'.... :upyours: At the very least, you'll have got a giggle out of giving them a taste of their own medicine, and the satisfaction of having woken them up from their self-imposed stupor! [tee-hee].

I'd ban them from coming out at rush hour altogether. Retired people have all day every day to do whatever it is they do, there is no need to have them dawdling about between 0730 - 0900 and 1630 - 1830.

I never used to be able to get the bus to work as it would just sail past the stop because it was full of pensioners.

They get up at about 0500 so by 0800 they have done all of the pottering about around the house they can manage so it's time to get the bus down to Woolworths where they will spend an hour examining every item in the store.

Then they purchase a new salt cellar or something equally unnecessary (as long as it costs less than ten bob) before doddering off somewhere else, the bank or the post office usually, where they will complain in a loud voice about having to wait in a long queue due to 'all the foreigners'.

A few years ago (maybe 30 years) drivers off Metros and Maestros were the worst dawdlers.

One day a friend was giving me a lift somewhere. We got to a junction where he had to stop and give way. There was a Metro coming down the road, and just before it reached us, my mate pulled out in front of it, and accelerated to 15mph and held that speed for a couple of hundred yards, shouting out of the window "see how you like it you bastard!"

Metro drivers wearing Trilbys were the worst of all.

Metros are all but extinct, and a good thing too. :) Although we have Daewoo Matiz these days.

I have noticed an increase in the number of drivers (mostly women) who fail to notice when the lights have turned to green. Judging by the way their head is facing, I would say they are using the red light as an opportunity to catch up on their Facebook.

I had to go to a hospital appointment today and was taken in a hospital car, a new Skoda Octavia. Now I'm a big bloke and I sometimes struggle fitting in cars but this Skoda was like a tardis. Lots of space even for me and a really nice place to be. It was only a 1.6 TD but it was very nippy and really quiet. I drove the first Octavia when they first came out and to be honest it was a bit crude, definitely felt like it came from VW's reject parts bin but this latest model feels every bit German in design and build quality, but the thing is it was more expensive than the equivalent VW Passat. Not a cheap car anymore.

I've still got my Dad's Metro Vanden Plas Automatic in my drive, Dad passed away in 1991. The car is not too bad a condition.

If I had a Metro I would consider joining the owners' club. He goes to Knutsford Services every Sunday. He always takes the A roads, which must make it a nightmare for caravanners. Sometimes he goes on the bus.

Is that the electric thing? If so, it wouldn't interest me in the slightest, no matter how fast it goes, because as well as being pinned back in my seat, I like to hear a nice ROAR when I accelerate!:exactly:

there was a company years ago that did that. you could make the car sound like anything, inside and out..

Interesting, could be a giggle... I also like folk to hear I'm coming, not potentially just for safety reasons, but because it puts a smile on my face when they can hear the growl of my engine, especially admiring 'petrol heads,' when they see what's making the noise...:eyebrows:

I don't think there's a problem really. The Honda Insight and Toyota Prius hybrids are near silent and have been around for years without significant issues and plenty of big Jags and Mercs and the like waft along making very little noise.

Pigmy Pony

The problem wouldn't be so much for the driver, as he knows when the accelerating and braking is going to happen, and subconsciously braces himself for it. It's the passenger who will have the problem.

When me and Mrs. P are out and about, with her driving (usually the case), and I'm busy looking at the back of my eyelids with a tartan rug across my lap and a half eaten Werthers Original stuck to my bottom lip, whiplash injuries are a real possibility.

I wonder how many times you can do that before the battery runs low and you end up sat in a service station for an hour whilst it charges up again? I'm guessing not many.

Some of the better ones are self-charging. Still wouldn't entertain one, though. I'll take a Porsche 911 (for it's looks and reasonably mentalist speed), or a Bugatti Chiron, for the former and its off-the-scale speed!!;)

Yes, that's a lot more expensive, but it would also be a LOT more fun! Hey baby, lemmie hear your ROAR!!:D

It is faster than many performance petrol cars, and is the future.
I am just waiting for them to be available with super capacitors and have a better range before going 100% electric.

The next is likely to be a hybrid, and probably quite boring. It is getting to the point where you just can’t use a fast car properly on the roads, and with the speed limit being dropped to 50mph on the twisty bits, the fun is rapidly disappearing.

A few people on here saying they would never buy an electric car. Easy to say when you have a choice. But whether you like it or not, it's coming.

The government will never say you have to buy electric, they'll just say 'you want to stick with your petrol/diesel cars, fine, but your road tax will be 2 grand a year, fuel prices will rapidly reach and pass the £2 per litre mark, and just wait till MOT time. Your motor's emissions need to be no more than 20% of the current standards, or you won't get your ticket.

Ownership and use of petrol cars will become a privilege of the wealthy, like holiday homes and yachts. So it's unlikely the policy makers themselves will be affected.

And just wait and see the character assassination they'll do on petrol-heads, they'll be a social pariahs, like smokers and people who like Celine Dion.

Is that a French thing? That certainly isn't the case here (in Wales). You can drive up to the national speed limit almost anywhere on country roads, so in that respect I'm still having plenty of fun.

Besides, as I've said before, having a fast car, for me, is mostly about the acceleration (0-60), not the top speed, which you simply can't use. That's why, given a choice, I'd always take a car that, say, had a maximum speed of 90mph, but was blisteringly quick getting there, over one with, say, a top speed of 140mph, but a much slower 0-60.

Marco.

I take your point, and I'm sure that, in due course, they'll penalise drivers of petrol/diesel cars accordingly, but not to the ridiculous levels you've quoted.

I'd certainly be willing to pay a reasonable premium on fuel and road tax, in order to keep my petrol or diesel car, and in terms of emissions, whilst no doubt they'll tighten up on it, they'll also have to be realistic.

And just wait and see the character assassination they'll do on petrol-heads, they'll be a social pariahs, like smokers and people who like Celine Dion.

Lol... Bring it on! I honestly couldn't give a flying fuck what people think. If *I* want to drive a petrol or diesel car, whilst doing so remains legal, I'll do it, if for no other reason than refusing to 'conform to the norm'!! But mostly because I insist on driving being fun.
