I Would love that, I've never been in one. Get up there with the vultures, get their view of the world. No bars and restaurants up there though, which is a shame. We did however find this viewpoint with a cafe/bar, a thousand feet or so above the road/river (it is a gorge), which was probably the next best thing. Called the "Point Sublime", next to the village of La Malene. Beautiful place. Plenty of google pics knocking about, but you know me, can't post 'em :(

Lol... You did manage it once, daftee - but that must've been a fluke!:D

Yeah, I love all that kind of stuff, but at the end of it, there'd still have to be nice meal and a decent bottle of wine:)

Safety? Hot air balloon? You’re having a laugh aren’t you?! There’s no way you’d get me up in one of them!

Personally love flying but I only like to do it when I can look out of a window and see a reassuring “Rolls Royce” logo on the engine beside me!

And a G&T in hand, obviously...

Ha - yeah I know, but I'm thinking of on a calm, dry day. I get the risks, but it would still be very appealing, unlike flying 'cattle class', in an airborne bin, cooped up like sardines with an odious array of unwashed chavs... Now, if you're talking first/business class, that's a different matter!;)

I read an article on smart motorways - their main objectives is to increase capacity of the current motorway network for minimal cost with the extra risk mitigated by compensating controls.
A study was carried out to assess the projected injury and death rate.

Unfortunately the Highway's Agency/ government moved the goal posts, something on along the lines of :
1. We're running out of road capacity.
2. We need to build more roads.
3. Green - says no, we don't want you cutting down more trees/disturbing nesting sites/releasing more CO2
4. Treasury says - no we can't spend that much money
5. But we need more capacity!!!
6. Clever spark says - Why don't we make use of the hard shoulder! 99.999% of the time it isn't used any way
7. H&S says, ah but it'll be more dangerous
8. Statisticians/Engineers say, well if we have system to detect stopped vehicles and have refuge areas 600m apart, that'll be ok
9. Highway's Agency & Government says - yippee, more capacity and almost as safe
10. Tell you what if we stretch it out a bit and not deploy the detection yet* we can save even more money !!!!
11. So refuge areas end up being unto 1600m apart instead 600m apart and the detection system doesn't work yet or hasn't been deployed

Yes, it was a reasonable idea with the proper mitigating controls, but instead it was f**d up the decision makers and people have been maimed and killed on these mutated smart motorways.

* or given no funding/ given to a contractor that can't deliver that product/service/tech for the money/ squandered on renovations ??

No tolls at Dartford
Reminds me of tolls on the Dartford Crossing, the crossing was supposed to be toll free by 1st April 2003 as it had been paid for. Yes it was toll free, instead the powers that be stopped charging a toll and called it a charge (and gave it to a French company to run). No, I'm not making this up.

I have no problem with variable speed limits, which I believe do help to even traffic flow. It is just the absence of hard shoulders that scares me a bit.

Last year when driving back from Dorset, we saw a perfect example of how it could all turn to shit in an instant - coming up to the Stoke exit of the M6 the car in front of us suddenly swerved from lane one (formerly hard shoulder) into lane 2. Only possible because there was a gap big enough for him to swerve into. Revealing some bloke pushing his broken down motorbike to the exit. We too had to change lanes double quick, and were similarly lucky. No idea how traffic following us went on.

As for radar systems to better detect stopped vehicles - just what we need, our lives in the hands of more bloody technology :(

Lol, I didn't say you didn't. You'll have to get out of the unfortunate habit of assuming general remarks I make are aimed at you!;)

I totally understand and appreciate how you use motorways, which makes sense. We tend not to have a definitive 'B' (or for that matter 'A'). We have a destination to get to, yes, but not within any set time or date (within reason), so simply arrive when we arrive:)

Sounds fab, but I'm not a great swimmer (can barely keep myself afloat), so canoes would freak me out, especially if it capsized:eek:

Could you enjoy the same from the serenity (and relative safety) of a hot-air balloon?:D

Marco.

Anytime I see or hear the word 'canoe' I think of 'Deliverance.'

But you wouldn't get me in a hot air balloon for love nor money. So many ways that can end badly.

You would have a life jacket on in the canoe so not being a good swimmer wouldn't really matter. Sounds a bit too hectic for a holiday pass-time for me though.

Me too - and what a great film it was!

Problem is, I'm not a big water fan [down, Piggurs, I still manage a bath at least twice a year:D], and panic/can't stand it if my head goes under water, or covers my face, even for a few seconds. Just not my thing. I like looking at water, but not really being in it, beyond the level of paddling at a beach, hence why pools don't do it for me either.

TBH, I use motorways so irregularly (on average no more than a dozen times a year), so whatever silly plans they have for them will have little impact on me.

yeah not massively keen on it either. I do a bit of swimming on holiday but when I say a bit I mean about 3 minutes then I just lie there and float about. I never go out of my depth.

As a lad I used to swim and snorkel off The Gower Peninsula when on my regular holidays there. There were some mighty waves and I'd plunge through fifteen foot breakers and swim out underwater, quite often getting out a quarter of a mile or so and swimming my way across the bay. The undertows and riptides didn't bother me, I'd just relax and 'go with the flow' spending hours in the water, it just seemed natural.

I'll call it a kayak then :) It was a two person jobbie, and yes we did have life jackets on, as I wasn't sure how bad I'd be. But it was definitely not hectic, just floating downstream, using the paddles for steering.

The kayak hire was at our camp site - bloke drove us a few miles upstream with the canoes in tow, dumped us off and we just floated downstream for a few hours, punctuated by the occasional stop for a cold beer or a bite to eat. when we'd floated back to the campsite we just give him his canoe back. Job done :)

Not a fan of water sports, too much faff, but that was a piece of piss.

yeah official for my car is. Fuel economy combined: 72.4 mpg which lets face it is bollocks.

i have had over 90 on short runs of about 7 miles, if heading east and its slightly downwards. Avg in winter is a little under 50. in summer its a little over 50, and like now and in autumn its about 55mpg. Tho, you can stretch it a bit if the aircon is off and you drive in eco mode, and use a gentle right foot.
overall i'd say 52mpg up here, which isnt bad for a near 2 metric ton car in scotland doing my mileage and type. my last ford only averaged about 20. mostly due to town driving. running at 20mph in this i can achieve 70 odd, but it only lasts so long and then engine will run a lot more as battery is drained.

Road Traffic Law states that: “No person shall drive or cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is in such a position that he cannot have proper control of the vehicle or have a full view of the road and traffic ahead.”

It is under this legislation that police have been clamping down on drivers whose vision of the road is obscured by objects placed on or around their windscreen.

The Highway Code states: “Windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision." This means that even having a dirty windscreen might be cause for police to pull you over.

20" wheels on an estate car?:hmm: Fake 'sporty sounds', to make it sound 'racy':hmm: and anyway most of all, what do the French know about making sports cars, or anything purporting to be such?:D

I'd need to drive it to form any kind of proper opinion, plus I'm not a fan of hybrids either. And only a 1.6L engine? For a staunch '3L or nowt' man, a tad weedy... It’s not bad looking in terms of styling, but the colour is dreadful (it might look better when they put the topcoat on!) and the black wheels and blacked out windows make it look like chav/drug dealer transport.

But worse than all of that, it’s French.

You see, I like black wheels and blacked out windows, which I don't think is chav on a class car (and yes the Peugeot comes into that category), just makes it look bad-ass... A 'pimped up' Honda Civic or Ford Focus, perhaps.

Nothing wrong with French either, *if* it's good. The only French car I've really liked though, was the Citroen DS - now THAT was a class act and stylish as fuck, not to mention way ahead of its time!:)

yes i think the days of big engines are dying and of course all engines eventually if this govt has its way. this i dont agree with, as if they can make ice cars clean enough the along with hybrid tech it should be an option... and may well still be.

Also, how far would you normally go in a day? Someone we know bought a small Toyota electric - think it was a Yaris - and says it's great. However we inherited a Yaris (petrol) which we didn't like much, and we eventually used that in part exchange for the Prius - which was in many ways brilliant. If you're not going fully electric I'd suggest sticking with hybrids (petrol). There are also the plug-in hybrids (also petrol, but larger batteries) - but the downside of those is that often they have smaller room or luggage space. I took a Prius hybrid - which I really liked - out on a test drive, but it was one of the models which sacrificed a seat and too much other space for the batteries. Some people I know with plug-in hybrids say they're really good - but that's really if you're only doing about 20-30 miles/day round trip. Small electrics are good for 100 miles/day round trip, and I've met a fair number of people now who've got old Nissan Leafs- presumably cheaply - and use them as runabouts. OTOH those are pretty useless for going more than 100 miles. Getting a "decent" electric with a reasonable range is still too expensive for most sane people.

If you've really gone off Toyota then look around, though I'd suspect they're still about the best for hybrids.

Probably the most sensible mid range EV is the Kia e-Niro - though I've not done a test drive of one of those yet.

hi dave, cheers for that info... size is about boot and mostly door and seat height. im not very flexible physically so it needs a decent height door to get in and seat needs to both not be too far down or at an angle as leg wont go past horizontal.

this leaves me mostly with suvs and xovers etc. the chr is probably the lowest i can do, and a little taller might be good as my neck is now less flexible than when i leased it. ive gone off the lekky as there isnt many service station fast chargers that i can see. if i want to then go out for day im probably stuck with 80miles each way charge before it goes dead....then where are you? at least with petrol for now anyway thee are pumps on motorways all over the shop.
as much as i would like an e vehicle, its just not advanced enough for longer runs. i might not do many or any but i wouldnt want to be put off by it.

Hi Grant,

Not sure if the Renault Zoe would be suitable - if you wanted to try an EV. It's arguably one of the best small ones with a fairly upright driving position, and it'll just about do 200 miles in a day - though the range appears to depend on the weather. That would typically cost you about £10 - or less - with a battery pack rated at around 50 kWh and assuming a max price of 20p per kWh. In most petrol cars that'd probably need at least 4 gallons - today's cost maybe about £25. Of the bigger EVs, very few have anything like the combination of range and space, plus presumably affordability, which I think you'd need.

I don't know much about your purchasing - you could get a very good second hand petrol car for less than a cheap new EV.
In Scotland you can get an interest free loan for 6 years for an EV - but dealing with the organisation which processes those is a bit of a PITA.

One thing I really don't know about most of the EVs - and maybe someone here would know - is what kind of gearbox - if any - they have? I think the Zoe has a fairly standard type of variable gearbox - though one is more or less completely unaware of it when driving. Possibly some of the others have some form of electric variable speed motor, though maybe they do still need a gearbox to cope with the range of speeds. Of course a petrol or diesel car needs a gearbox as there isn't enough torque at very low engine speeds, so normally the lower speeds are at least 1000 rpm, which would usually get a car up to 20-30 mph - by which time the engine will be revolving faster, and need a gear change. Electric motors might well be able to operate from very low rotational speeds, and then by circuit and winding changes goup to much higher rotational speeds, thus reducing the need for a gearbox to match the motor speed to the road speed.

I really don't know - maybe someone else here does.

For your purposes I really think you might be best to stick with the devil you know - even if not perfect. I was really sad to lose my Prius. How many miles do you think you'd want to do a year?

Truckletheuncivil
11-05-2021, 20:37
Electric motors should not need a gearbox. That’s why diesel electric trains came about because the gearbox would have been too big

And, it may become usual for electric cars to clock up maybe 500 thousand miles, we're seeing very high mileage hybrid cars already. So I can see manufacturers wanting to do something about 'everlasting' cars, as new sales will suffer otherwise. I think cheapening of major components to limit their durability will happen, along with overpricing and reducing availability of parts over time.

Yes mate Lexus. She needs something big enough for three kids, four dogs and can tow a caravan and a horse box. This ticks all the boxes and she loves how it drives. 3 litre V6 so has plenty poke for towing. Plus bombproof Lexus build quality, and it's the top of the range SE-L. Very quiet in the cabin, but it has a nice growl when it's booted.

Needs a good test drive to see if she likes it- I found it poor for long journeys as the suspension is very bouncy, it was constantly jiggling at speed on the motorway, which got very wearing after a while. Other than that I liked it though, decent equipment as standard.

A lot of Fiat engines etc. in Renegades. Whether that's a good or bad thing these days, I don't know, but I'd sooner that than Renault bits.

Ah, no worries:)

Yeah, I've been following your tales of woe, so will bear in mind the reliability issues.. "Funky", is what we both thought, and like me, Del won't drive anything that isn't a bit individually different/has a bit of 'personality' [anything you see tons of on the road, and are ten-a-penny, is an immediate turn off] - and for her, also a nod to girly-ness:eyebrows:

Different kind of macho though. Sports Utility says something completely different to low rider sports sedan.

A bloke in a Jeep you think he maybe does windsurfing or paintballing and owns at least one piece of clothing with 'Castrol GTX' written on it. Spends a lot of time in the pub.

A bird in one and you think 'She must be a force to be reckoned with.'

Interesting... I know that if I leave here with a full tank of diesel, and drive down to Dover (keeping within speed limits), I'm left with almost exactly half a tank, and that's 280 miles, which suggests that the car has a range of 560 miles (with motorway driving) on a full tank - but of course at greater cost!:)

One advantage I guess of having 7 gears and a big diesel engine, is that it keeps the revs right down on motorway driving. At 80mph, the car's doing less than 2000 revs, and so aside from a nice 'hum' from the sports exhaust, inside the cabin is very quiet.

yeah it comes up with an average in the 400 + range. it takes 43 litres so probably about 450 at an avg of 50mpg, which is usually doable ...certainly in warmer weather. today i had the heating on as its fairly cool. obviously i put less than half tank in, but guage wasnt much above it.

13-05-2021, 15:41
Lol... Firstly, most people drive at 80 on UK motorways, which you'll soon discover when doing 70, and subsequently getting in everyone else's way, apart from trucks!:D

On empty stretches, free from congestion, that's just the how the flow of the traffic works. It's also why the official speed limit is 70, as they know that folk will do 80, but they won't make that the speed limit, as then most folk would do 90!;)

Secondly, you've assumed that my comment about 80mph was in relation to the point I was making about the range I get with my car on a full tank of diesel, which it wasn't. I was simply stating a fact that at 80mph my car's doing less than 2000 revs, but I wasn't doing 80mph when I was referring to the former and staying within speed limits:)

its about satisfaction, and sometimes people who buy expensive cars have a more demanding idea of whats good or bad about their cars. I remember when i bought my Skoda Octavia estate, it was the top car from the top maker, and way ahead of VX, of whom its part of, and most of the makings were the same. And by some way too. VW were way down the list. My C-HR from Toyota is based on a Lexus in much of its Technology, and the Hybrid stuff and platform, the same as a Prius.

Also read that Ford will be making some electric cars using a VW platform.. odd how these things go

I never let my tank go less than half-full, just a habit I've got into, as I always like going into the car knowing I don't have to think about refuelling for a while.

Plus, I like to use my fav fuel (Texaco Supreme Diesel), as that's what the car runs best on, by a notable margin, and so hate filling up with anything 'inferior', which I may be forced to do if there isn't a Texaco station in the vicinity:)

I hate going to fill up, can't be arsed with it, so I fill to the brim, run until 'reserve' comes on then fill to the brim again. AFAIK it's identical fuel from the same source, only difference is the additives. I use it quite happily in my 535d, don't detect any difference. I do occasionally fill up with some premium stuff though, and also change the oil every 5k and run these through-

This looks like a common sense approach - I'm happy to accept that big brand fuels offer some performance advantage over supermarket fuels, but not to any worthwhile degree. I smile a bit when I hear someone say they only ever use premium fuel as their car/bike runs better on it - how would they know? Did they run comparison tests, or more likely, have they fallen for the marketing hype? :)

rather than bollox such a Nectar points, which aren't much use to us, as there's rarely anything of great interest to redeem them against.

You can use them against ebay purchases.

I have to stick with ordinary supermarket petrol for my little 996cc Suzuki. The torque increase with branded premium fuels is so massive it literally tears the treads off my tyres! :D

Even my distinctly non-performance C4 has a noticeable difference between standard diesel and V-Power - remarkedly so. Plus it guards against injector failure, which you definitely don't want in a diesel as many of them get seized into the head and have to be drilled out.

Had that problem with a Vito years back at the company I worked for - cost a feckin' fortune to get sorted. Mind you, they were utter junk as most Mercs of that era were. It rusted itself to pieces in the end, as did the other one we bought at the same time.

What would be the point of that? You do say some strange things :ner:

I hate going to fill up, can't be arsed with it, so I fill to the brim, run until 'reserve' comes on then fill to the brim again. Refuelling is just 'dead time', like waiting at traffic lights :( If your car is too precious to tolerate reserve tank running, you need to ditch the diva, buy a Lada Riva :)

Haha - just stating a fact, in terms of distance!

'Dead time' isn't an issue when the 'alive' stuff isn't rationed, lol... I wash the car sometimes 3 times a week, too [black's a bastard to keep clean]!:ner:

And when it's all nice and shiny, I like taking 'her' for a wee drink [fill up] afterwards:D

Nope, they (I guess like me), can just feel the very obvious difference in engine smoothness/responsiveness when better fuel is used, or the reduction in such when it isn't - BUT it helps to have a performance-designed car to notice that difference.

Anyway, each to his or her own, I'm not here to push premium fuels - just stating what my car undoubtedly runs best on.

AFAIK it's identical fuel from the same source, only difference is the additives. I use it quite happily in my 535d, don't detect any difference. I do occasionally fill up with some premium stuff though, and also change the oil every 5k and run these through-

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00EN00NZA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Keeps the engine and turbos clean.

Fair enough, mate. I used to use similar stuff in the Brabster (which it benefited from), before I switched to the Texaco diesel. Now it's unnecessary (makes no difference if I do), as the cleaning agents/additives in the Texaco diesel does that job, which beforehand other premium diesels obviously didn't.

IME, the only two worth using, are V-Power and Texaco Supreme. 'BP Ultimate' and 'Esso Synergy' did hee-haw, over the standard stuff, and were a total waste of money.

The Forte additives are more for maintenance and longevity, not cheap but a lot more so than a new turbo..

Don't notice any differences after a change, but then I do one every 5k.

Nope, just got caught out on long journeys (and especially abroad) when the fuel I wanted wasn't available, and immediately sensed the downgrade.. That's one of the reasons why I like to keep half a tank at all times - so (depending on how far I need to go) there's less chance of that happening:)

So trying bio diesel (chip pan oil) in the Brabster is probably not on the cards eh :) I'm sure if it came from a nice family run restaurant it would be fine, rather than some soulless KFC...

I try not to go below empty - really hinders the car's progress.

A little tale of 'low fuel running'.
I took off on my paramotor with 7.5 litres of fuel on board and flew over to a friends microlight training school.
The journey took 50 minutes and I landed with about 4 litres still in the tank.

Had a good day over there then took off late afternoon for the return trip. The wind had picked up slightly so the return leg took 55 minutes.
When I landed I found I had 100 millilitres left in the tank

The thing was the barstewards at the school had a bet that I would run out before making it back :lol:

Well worked out Grant. I guess with what was in the carb as well it would have probably been a couple of minutes.

Had I run out I would have landed in a previous field, I have had that happen when the return leg was a stronger wind than expected. (Pilot error).

Alan, as I said earlier I was surprised and impressed by how compact and light weight your paramotor is, but I did wonder later if there was such a thing as an electric paramotor, whether such a thing was feasible :)

Firebottle
16-05-2021, 06:35
Yes there are electric paramotors on the market, the limitation at the moment is the battery technology giving only about 30 mins run time.

Also you are carrying the full weight of the battery whether it is full or empty of charge, unlike fuel.

Badly corroded wire broke but it was under the brake fluid reservoir and took some finding!

Indeed. The garage owner also had to jump through hoops with Land Rover to get the right wiring diagram out of them as it was made right on the cusp of when BMW sold Land Rover to Ford, and so it didn't quite correspond to any of the standard wiring diagrams.

So hopefully, the Beobloke car situation is looking up. Especially as my new weekend toy is safely tucked away in the garage after I collected it at the weekend. It's a lot simpler than the RR fortunately... :D

To answer the questions, no, it doesn’t have a wooden chassis and, yes, the bonnet hinges from the front!

I’ve lusted after a Marcos for many years. My mum was born and grew up in Westbury, where they were made. She loved the place until the day she died, and her cousins lived there all their lives. We were regular visitors throughout my life as they were the closest thing I had to an aunt and uncle as both mum and dad were only children.

Well, in 1993 or thereabouts, when I was 19, my ‘aunt’ mentioned that a friend of hers worked for Marcos and would I like a look round the factory? I didn’t have to be asked twice and so was shown round the two Nissen huts on the West Wilts Trading Estate on a Saturday morning, followed by a blast round the B-roads of Wiltshire beside the company’s Sales Director in a brand new Mantara. As I got out afterwards wearing one of the biggest grins I’ve ever had, I vowed then and there that I would own one, one day.

Consequently, when mum died last year, it seemed obvious that I had to divert some of my inheritance towards one, and here it is. Obviously I’m sad that mum never got to see it but I like to think she would approve, albeit in a “my god, you’ll kill yourself in that” kind of way! Some friends of ours are already taking bets on which tree along the road down to the local village I’ll wrap it round first…:D
