The hoist was fitted before I got car at dealers.

And this is where the problems can start.
My main role at Toyota/Lexus was as a prep tech which meant I fitted all the genuine accessories (tow bars, sat nav, parking sensors, stereo upgrades and basically anything that’s an optional extra) and these need to be plumbed into the wiring looms correctly, and by that I mean fitted as it would be at the factory.
This in turn means, dashboards out, carpets out, seats out etc so I could get at various loom plugs to pin in the wiring needed, which is extremely labour intensive.
The problem with non gen accessories is that when fitted the wiring is hacked into the looms via solder (bad) or scotch locks (fucking terrible) and this in turn can play havoc with the can bus system.
ECU’s (the most basic cars will have 30+ of them) are required to see certain voltages and certain systems run on different voltages, so when someone starts adding stuff into the system it causes all manner of problems between the ECU’s as they all “talk” to each other via the can bus. Even a badly soldered joint that’s causing resistance will cause mayhem.
Where I work now if theres a broken or damaged wire in any of the safety systems or in any other system that “may” impact said system then Mercedes insist on a new loom being fitted, absolutely zero repairs are allowed, period.
There is a very good reason for that.
I’m not saying all aftermarket stuff fitted is bad, but, the majority of drain problems I’ve seen over the years are a direct cause of it.

as i say its possible of course, but its so intermittent its a difficult one to assess. goes fine for 6 months or a year and then one night it just drops to 4v. battery u/s. machines say wont take full charge etc. i get feeling software is at fault. its just my feeling, but as an ee myself it fits.

Have you checked that water is not getting into the area with some of the batteries? Some Toyotas seem to have a water ingress problem which causes corrosion, and/or shorts and hence battery drain.

Shouldn’t happen, as your car is fairly new IIRC, but ....Can't say I've noticed any around the small battery. It's odd tho that this issue has been going on for years. Anyway as much as I love the car it's unlikely I will get another. But not impossible. Tbh I'm being priced out of market now for cars suitable size wise. Costs are spiraling and it may be it won't be feasible to get another decent sized car I can get in to.

Just a thought Grant, but what about having the other option of having the Motability paid into your bank and then find a decent used car? This is what Mrs P did with hers. Or has it all changed now? She could tell me but she's still in bed, lazy arse :)

Oh no!

I fitted a bigger rear sprocket the other day to give even more insane acceleration, because obviously it isn't fast enough already, but it will reduce the top speed significantly, so I should be good to go :D
And to be fair, anything over 150mph on a naked bike has ones head wobbling around more than Sturgeon giving evidence under oath.

Obviously the sprocket had to be KTM orange..

 I predict frequent rear tyre purchases - hope you've budgeted :) If you could just shave another 2.5 seconds off your 0-60, you'll be arriving before you set off - something to aim for!

38>40 teeth.
There’s plenty of clearance and plenty of chain adjustment.
It’s a very common mod on that bike as it increases the revs in the lower gears and makes for a smoother ride.
Much better for 3rd gear wheelies as well :D

Got my renewal notice from Bennetts yesterday for the Pony Express. Gone up from £186 to £251, even though I haven't made a claim in 18 years. And they've put a value of £1500 on it, though I know that age of Blade with such low miles and in that condition will be worth double that and then some. Taking the piss.

I know if I called them and said I've had a better quote they would do something about it, but tough titty - they should have come with a competitive quote in the first place, instead of trying it on. Time to shop around. A quote from Hastings is coming in cheaper than Bennetts was last year.

Reverting briefly to how to charge up a car which doesn't get used a lot these days. A friend of mind uses a trickle charger and says he charges his car via the cigarette lighter socket. I don't think that will work with many cars, but I might be wrong.

A slight problem we have with our Renault is that the battery has an awkward cover over it, so it's a bit of a faff trying to get that on and off in order to do the charging. One option I guess is to put a couple of extra wires in and take those round under the battery cover.

The cigarette lighter idea would be good, if it would work.

if you have a rear lighter socket in boot it is often always on... front ones usually aren't. some chargers you can buy a kit to wire it into battery

I was going to start a new thread but I think I'll add this here.

Does anyone have experience of the Porsche Panamera, in particular the 4.0 Turbo S from 2017 onwards? If not that model then any petrol PDK model.

The new business is starting to pay some handsome dividends and I'm thinking that I rather fancy one. Budget will be £80k and I won't be doing much mileage as most of my work will be from home (aside for some lovely and fairly regular trips to North Aberdeenshire) so the fact it does less than 20mpg won't matter, and frankly I don't expect to run this car on anything approaching a shoestring.

A brand new Porsche dealership has just opened up about ten minutes from my house in Norwich so local service isn't a problem, although if anyone knows of a decent independent Porsche garage this way then do say. The E-Hybrid is a fantastic car, but the full fat version is out of my price range, so that'll be next (if I like the Turbo S of course).

I had my eye on this one, although it's now sold :( although I really want to get some thoughts and tips from owners before dumping half a house's worth of cash on a car.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202102139035815?atmobcid=soc4

This one is also rather nice. Whatever I choose I don't want one in black (yes I know that's a girlie thing to say, but black cars always look filthy dirty, and there's a lotta shit on the roads in Norfolk!).

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202103220448569?atmobcid=soc4

I'm specifically going for sub 30k as the PDK gearbox needs fluid changes every 30k according to many Porsche specialists, even though Porsche themselves say 60k. Buying one at under 30k means that I can immediately change the trans fluid and have the 'box recalibrated, and then do it every 25k instead - I'm always finicky about slightly cautiously servicing cars.

Other than the box fluid I can't really find any common issues with the Panamera on the web, so I thought I'd ask here just in case. :)

Yes, but at the end of it one is left with no car and no money, whereas with a used car purchase there's always a good chunk of cash in it and a car if one doesn't want to change. Plus the first owner has taken the hit on depreciation.

Leasing would be great if the company was paying, but I'm paying so ownership and mileage claim is more tax efficient.

It's a great car. 313 hp and 630nm yet returns 36-38 mpg. Only issue I've had so far was a faulty seat belt pretensioner, I found a new one on ebay for £80 and replaced it myself- I'm fairly handy with the spanners so do most work myself.

Not too bad given BMW want £450 for the part.

Other than that it's been faultless, unusual for a BMW I know lol. Would love a V8 but there are well documented issues with them.

Rock hard, sounded magnificent - like a NASCAR, 290bhp and revved so smoothly. Went very fast indeed as it was comparatively light compared to today's safety-laden saloons.

But in the 1.5 years I had it almost every front suspension component failed, fuel pump failed, gearbox failed, power steering pump failed, CD changer failed, electric window switches failed and then it got smashed into whilst I was waiting at a set of traffic lights.

BMW reliability eh.

Lol, I think a lot of it is your Donald Duck... I know folk who've had various Beemers for years, with next to no problems. With German cars though, I do think that quality wise/reliability, overall, Mercs have the edge over BMWs, Audis better still, and with Porsche at the top of the tree:)

The Brabster's 12 years old now, and done 102,000 miles, but of course is a diesel, which longevity-wise is quite different from a petrol engine. However, although I've replaced and upgraded/modded quite a few bits, some just through wear and tear, nothing major has gone on the car so far. It's been great, but it does get rather pampered!:D

I've just had one major thing done, which was to completely replace the (steel) brake pipes, which were badly corroded (still the originals, so not bad for 12 years use), with copper ones throughout, and which will now be a permanent job. I also had to replace the windscreen washer motor, which had gone, again an original part.

It's also had four new tyres on it recently (Michelin Pilot Sport 4S), and front and rear discs and pads (EBC performance drilled and slotted, for the former and Yellow Stuff for the latter), which form part of the car's uprated brakes, and interestingly also a professional 4-wheel alignment (carried out on a £40k machine), to optimise the tracking...

The latter has resulted in a notable improvement in the car's handling (which was already excellent), as a few key parameters were out. It also holds a straight line perfectly for a lengthy time on a straight road (although I haven't counted the number of secs), depending on camber, and which will also ensure even wear and greater longevity of the rather pricey tyres!

It's a process I'd thoroughly recommend doing for any car, as apparently even the tracking on brand new cars can be out.

On the 2019 JD Power Survey (UK) both Merc and Audi were below average for dependability, BMW came in last.

https://europe.jdpower.com/press-releases/2019-uk-vehicle-dependability-study

Marco
08-04-2021, 11:39
Yup, I guess it depends on which studies or polls you look at. If I was getting another German car though, whenever I retire the Brabster, it would be an Audi RS of some description - just awesome cars!:)

Either that, or a BMW M4, and tune it up to buggery. Don't like the new Mercs, and Porsches, lovely as they are, are impractical (for my needs).

BUT - I suspect I'll be scratching the Italian itch I've so far never scratched, and end up with an Alfa Giulia!

Of course, if you want properly unreliable, you want Land Rover, as confirmed by any JD Power survey anywhere in the world for the last 20 years.

My Range Rover is broken currently (again). It's booked in for a service in two weeks time anyway, but my Landy man said to bring it in today for a quick code scan to see if he could reset it and/or see what replacement parts it might need that he could fit during the service.

Trouble, is, it doesn't appear to be broadcasting or storing any fault codes, despite the air suspension having dropped to its lowest setting and refusing to move, a "Hill Descent Control Not Available" message an the LCD and the ABS, Braking system and Traction Control warning lights being permanently on. He was puzzled; I'm just depressed...

As an aside the fault first occurred when I booted it enthusiastically out of a side road last Friday. A fellow RR owner here at work says it's just punishing me for such hooligan behaviour! :D

Ali, have you had a 4-wheel alignment done on your Beemer? If not, I'd thoroughly recommend it. You might think it drives straight now (I did with the Brabster), but the difference afterwards, when it genuinely *is* straight, is significant...

Just 'sits on the road' nicer, and seems to allow the rear wheels to plant power down better!:)

Informative article here on Alignment Tech: https://dsportmag.com/the-tech/extracting-handling-performance-alignment-settings/

Among other improvements, for me, this has been the most noticeable, in terms of negative camber:

"4) A proper, non-excessive amount of negative camber utilizes the full tire width and aids in exerting downward force to maximize grip."

Yup!:)

My daughter's 2 year old Discovery is back in the garage for the umpteenth time. She's had the car 6 months and is halfway through the 12 month warranty. Rear diff or something this time. Repair cost is £2k, and warranty only pays out first £1200. During this week she's had two important meetings to attend in Manchester for which she used the train, as they didn't provide a courtesy car. And before anyone says she should have been more assertive, believe me when I say that when she's on one, people run for cover. Turns out she likes trains :)

Although if Mrs. P was to say "I want a truck", that's what we would end up with. Because I don't care about 4 wheels too much.

Other than the missing locks it was mint, but not registered with DVLA which I think put people off but it was a doddle to sort. Never had any problem with it unlike the parade of Ford Escorts that preceded it, and it was pretty pokey too, would cruise at 80 mph with no strain at all.

Nissan wanted £250 for new locks so that was a non-starter.

must admit i'm pleased with my Volvo S80, most of my driving is up and down the motorways, i bought it a couple of years ago, it was 2 years old when i got it and to be honest wasn't a car on my radar, i wanted a 530d beemer but the insurance on it was just stupid, it was the dealer that suggested the Volvo, they don't hold their value like a five series so i ended up with something more relaxing to drive on the motorway, newer, better equipped and cheaper, it doesn't look as good from the front and isn't as good a drivers car but it ticks all my boxes

The only Volvo I'd entertain would be an S90, which is a pretty cool car. (some S80s are decent. too). TBH, I was so pissed off when Saab went out of business, as they made some cracking cars, which simply oozed performance and quality!

However, Granty, if you go for your CX40, I hope it hits the spot:cool:

These are the questions going through my mind, car-wise:

Is the UK ready for (new) EV only from 2030?
Are non-EVs likely to loose all their value the closer we get to 2030?
Will the cost of fuel become non-tenable for most after 2030?

If you have a diesel car and fuel becomes unobtainable/stupidly expensive, you could run it on chip pan oil. A mate of mine did that, got his oil from takeaways I believe.

It is likely though that said takeaways will see the value of their biodiesel and start asking silly money too. In which case I predict panic buying of Spry Crisp'n'Dry at the supermarkets. Uncertain times ahead :(

Yes, DIY diesel from plant or animal fat will work for older diesels, anything made in the 15 years will still need something properly refined, whether it comes from old dinosaurs or not.

Also as you point out, the alternatives will become very expensive when there is the demand.

There was a case here a couple of years back where a bloke hit a stationary artic that had stopped due to blown tyre.

He went right into the back of it at speed and was killed.

He had been reading facebook on his phone at the time. If he had autonomous control on his vehicle and had enabled it before he went on his phone then he'd still be alive.

Most accidents are due to poor driving like that. The odds are the computer driving will be a lot safer then that. Not foolproof, but safer.

You could argue people should just learn to be better drivers/pay proper attention but we all know that won't happen. If every car was autonomous there would be fewer accidents, that's a fact.

37mph i think... 60kph my car will keep a safe distance from can in front and if needed brake to stop. if it does stop it has to be reset tho. Its really for motorways but i use it on other roads(with care). its quite good actually especially if your traffic is quite variable speed wise.. cant be used at roundabouts or sharp corners tho so care and sense need to be used. It will also steer me back into lane if i drift. but i wouldnt trust it without being on the case myself.

Smart motorways don't have anything to do with driverless cars, totally unconnected. If you've been on the M6 in the past few years you've been on a smart motorway.

At the moment all cars with driverless capability can be over-ridden by the driver. I don't think you have anything to worry about there. I can't see it being made compulsory, not in our lifetimes.

It's a gradual introduction but I can see that in 20 years' time nobody would ever remotely consider driving "manually". Not yet, but it's coming.

Yes, but also they hadn't enabled the Autopilot system, so it's akin to getting out of the driver's seat in a standard car that isn't equipped with auto-drive. It'll definitely crash.

So they say, but who knows what or whom are ultimately capable of overriding everyone or everything else? That's the trouble with computers; they're easily manipulated and simply do what they're programmed to do! I just wouldn't trust these things or go near them with a bargepole.

If they made the driving test more worthy of the name, and able to expose the incompetent idiots it currently allows onto the roads, and prevent them from doing so, that would go some way to improving road safety *at source*, without the need for technology that ultimately controls or limits your freedoms.

It may improve safety, Adam, but it's the precedent it could set in future, and the ability for the technology in question to be abused, which worries me.

As usual though, when attempting to 'fix' problems, the 'powers that be' always take the easiest route [for them], rather than the one that fundamentally best addresses the matter, which in this case is training people, *before they're allowed onto the roads in the first place*, to be better drivers!

It should be MUCH harder to obtain a driving licence than it currently is, and if so, that would improve standards - simples.

Idiots who, despite having passed a test, still can't parallel park would be MADE to learn how to do so, if it were up to me, as well as those who pass the test, yet are 'too scared' to use motorways [I mean what's that shit all about?] MADE to learn how to do so safely, or they could forget all about driving.

I have a neighbour who having passed her test (about five years ago), has lost confidence in driving anywhere, let alone driving on a motorway. I have offered to sit in with her and let her drive, starting with quiet roads and gradually increasing to driving in busier and busier traffic - but to no avail. As a consequence, her car is sat on the driveway, with a flat battery, the tyres slowly deflating, the petrol turning into gel and, no-doubt, the engine oil gummed up. It wouldn't surprise me if the engine is a complete write off.

Me too, mate.. I've always said that robots will ultimately be the ruination of mankind, and I've seen little, in terms of how they've impacted our lives so far, to change my mind.

In terms of your first point, that would go a BIG way to improving the standards of driving on motorways, thus to improving safety. It's always struck me as absolutely ludicrous that you can go from being banned from driving on a motorway, to passing your test, then simply 'let loose' on one, with ZERO experience!

Madness. It's a totally different form of driving, therefore no wonder there are so many bloody accidents! You can spot the incompetents a mile off, though, by how they use the *ACCELERATION* LANE [the first being the key word] when joining a motorway, and then their subsequent lane discipline, or rather complete lack of such!!

Therefore, part of the test should be undertaken on a motorway, accompanied by an examiner, to test how the driver behaves and reacts to certain conditions, and also so that they know the rules, and prior to that, in order to learn the latter, sessions accompanied by an instructor.

However, of course it's far simpler just to CONTROL people's driving behaviour, via technology, than actually *making* them better drivers!! And what do you think's going to happen with the limited driving skills they've got, if in an emergency called upon to take evasive action, when they've become so accustomed to doing fuck all behind the wheel??

Oh, of course, apart from watching movies or engaging in social media on their equally 'smart' phones... Mostly 'smart' for whom, I wonder? It's a recipe for disaster. I despair for humanity and the brainwashed masses, I really do.

No they have nothing to do with each other.

This is what a smart motorway is:

A smart motorway (formerly managed motorway and active traffic management), also known in Scotland as an intelligent transport system, is a section of motorway in the United Kingdom (primarily in England) that employs active traffic management (ATM) techniques to increase capacity through the use of MIDAS technology including variable speed limits and occasionally hard shoulder running and ramp metering at busy times.

A car does not need to be battery powered to be self-driving, and not all none ICE cars have self-driving capability. So self-driving cars and electric powered cars are not linked either. Although AFAIK you can't buy a self-driving ICE vehicle although there were/are lots of prototypes.

Marco
28-04-2021, 16:03
You're missing the point, Martin. That might be what they SAY, but it doesn't necessarily mean that's what they *MEAN*. The key, and frequently mentioned word there, is "management". Where avoidable, I don't want my activities or behaviour, driving or otherwise, 'managed' by any fucker! At least not in that way.

We can go round in circles, but I stand by what I said, which is that both (heavily computerised) electric cars and 'smart' highways (not just motorways) are forms of technology able to be abused by those in control of such.

Me? I'll be the one who's in 100% control of my own car, thanks, and where I go - at ALL times! MINIMISING computerisation/automation, and MAXIMIMISING manual functionality, quite simply, is the answer for the users (not the makers) to stay in control of any product.

Marco.

Macca
28-04-2021, 16:15
All 'management' means is that there is a variable speed limit and they can open and close lanes. There's nothing in or on a smart motorway that can take control of your car, or any car.

Marco.

It's not an opinion Marco, it's just what it is - the smart motorway senses traffic volume and speed in a given area and posts appropriate speed limit signs to even the traffic flow. Have you ever suddenly found yourself amongst greatly slowed down traffic on the motorway, thought "ooh there must be an accident up ahead", and then the traffic clears and you find the congestion was for no good reason. Annoys the shit out of me. Smart motorways address this problem.

Don't like there being no hard shoulder though, that looks like a recipe for disaster.

One more thing:

Plenty of petrol heads in Britain, but I think the majority of motorists just want to reliably get from A to B in comfort. For the die hard enthusiasts there's always track days. Somewhere like Oulton Park in Cheshire. I think it's in Cheshire.

Marco
28-04-2021, 18:14
I'm not disputing what it currently does, Piggurs, simply stating what it *could do* in future, as the technology 'matures' and those in charge seek to impose more control on the road networks and behaviour of drivers.

Fortunately, I avoid motorways wherever possible, as they're so boring and soulless (much preferring to use generally more scenic A or B roads) to get to where I need to go, and fortunately am rarely in a hurry, so although I've experienced what you've said, I'm rarely troubled by it.

Yes, part of the taxes I pay will no doubt go towards paying for this pish, which can't be avoided, but I won't be 'supporting' it (or electric cars) in any other way.

Marco.

If enough drivers (like yourself) avoid these smart motorways like the plague, traffic volume on them will be reduced and so congestion greatly reduced, which is the aim. Job done! Pretty smart, eh? :)

My view on French roads: Most locals won't bother with the autoroutes for short journeys as they don't want to pays tolls, and the Peage is a pain in the arse. Makes their motorways much less clogged than ours. We on the other hand will jump on the motorway just to the next junction.

Indeed, Edd. That's the problem, and also one of the reasons for the birth of these soulless electric 'means of conveyance', as car manufacturers simply cater for the latest trends, and design their vehicles accordingly in line with the requirements of the undiscerning masses, who are only too happy to accept what they're given:rolleyes:

Ha - very good! Either way, I'll rarely experience their 'joys', as my lifestyle thankfully allows me to largely avoid them!:)

Who's "we"? Maybe you, not me. Unless it was an emergency, that's the last thing I'd do.

French roads are mostly a joy to drive on, but their motorways are often as soulless as any other, hence why when we go to France by car, or to Italy, we use the main roads instead (or sometimes secondary roads), even if it takes longer, as it least you get to see something - often rather lovely little towns, full of character and history, often missed by those otherwise in too much of a rush!:)

Good point.

I am a car person, but frankly my current car is just a tool. Cheap to run, cheap to tax, if it gets a scratch or dent then so what? All I use it for is to travel for work. It's just an appliance.

Next one will be a higher end car (Panamera), but I'm likely now to go for the e-Hydrid as the economy and tax benefits are huge, despite the incredible performance. After that I'll probably go full electric. The infrastructure will be sorted by then so long distances won't be a problem.

I've several clients who run Tesla's and other full electric cars already, and not one of them wants to go back to a fossil fuel burner. :D Eventually all cars will be electric, with fuel burners the preserve of classic car rallies and track days.

Hopefully not in my driving lifetime (realistically the next 25 years). I'll certainly be holding onto whatever 'fossil fuel burner' I'm driving, as much as possible, until then!

Teslas, and other 'performance' electric cars are fine (if you like that sort of thing), but what I'm talking about is your 'average Joe's' glorified shopping trolley/city car, together with all the yawn-inducing near-identical SUVs, clogging up our roads, bought with zero imagination.

BOOORRRIINNGGG!!!

When I say "we", I mean the average British motorist, not necessarily me, you, or any other pedant who might have seized upon that tiny little word :ner:

I too like driving in France, but have no issue with using the autoroutes. I've also used plenty of the lesser roads, but many of them are boring as shit (endless bloody miles of rapeseed fields punctuated by the occasional crumbling old neglected heap of a house with some wizened old dude sat out front. And legions of wind turbines is about as interesting as northern France gets, imo.

Of course all parts of France will have some things of interest, and they are usually signposted on the autoroutes!

I must admit that I am against so-called ‘smart’ motorways and particularly the removal of the hard shoulder, which seems preposterous. I despair of what’s going to become of the M27 down here once they finish ‘smartening’ it.

Before all this strange virus stuff happened in the world and Ursula was travelling the globe with work, I was a regular visitor to Heathrow to drop her off and collect her, so gained fair experience of the top of the M3, which was made ‘smart’ a year or two back.

On the first occasion after the upgrade, as I reached Farnborough, the overhead gantries said there was an incident in Lane 1 which was closed, so we all duly moved over and crawled along at the specified 50 mph. On arriving at the M25 junction a good 10 miles later, the restriction was lifted but nowhere had there been any sign of a blockage, a breakdown or a stranded vehicle.

The second time I came that way, same thing again. Closed lane, 50mph, we all moved out, nothing to be seen.

The third time I was getting wise to this so I stayed in the inside lane despite it being ‘closed’. The result? Yep, you guessed it - absolutely nothing to be seen.

If they’re all like this, then they don’t seem very ‘smart’ to me.

True the French autoroutes are boring to drive on, but because they are toll roads, there is less traffic on them than the motorways in the UK, so are marginally more enjoyable to use.

Haha... So maintaining the pedantry, how do you know that as FACT? Do you have data to back up your rather sweeping assertion?:ner::eyebrows:;)

No-one I know would do that, or be in so much of a hurry, unless they were rushing home to a burning house with their wife and kids inside!

Indeed it can be in that area, but there are still little gems of villages to be found, often containing some fabulous family-run restaurants, and which would be missed when bypassed by a motorway - and as a foodie, you know how important that is to me [indeed is the main reason I'd be there in the first place]!:D

When I'm on holiday, I also like to just tootle along and be chilled out and relaxed, even stopping at a quaint little bar for refreshments, often found at the side of the road, which motorways don't lend themselves to. They're primarily for getting from A to B as quickly as possible, and that shouldn't really be the mindset when you're on holiday.

Fuck that. LONG LIVE FREE-THINKING (and the ability to exercise it) in a car YOU control!!!

Annoying it might have been, but it could have been worse, much worse: you might have broken down, limped into the hard shoulder and not been noticed by the CCTV cameras, with the result that the lane was not closed and a 40 ton lorry run into the back of you!

To date over 50 people have been killed on the hard shoulder of so-called smart motorways. Use of the hard shoulder as a live lane is a daft and dangerous idea, and will remain so until the emergency breakdown zones are much closer together.

But if A is the place you've just enjoyed visiting, and B is the next place of interest, the autoroutes give you more time in the places you want to be. And I have a perfectly good holiday mindset, not dashing around everywhere. Neither is eating and drinking in a fabulous family run restaurant the main reason to be there in the first place for us.

Best holiday day I ever had was in Gorges du Tarn, where we hired canoes and went down the Tarn river. Taking our time, enjoying the warm clean waters of the river (by accident, twice), watching the Griffon vultures riding the thermals, and making a couple of stops at riverside bars for a cold beer and a bite. You should try that Marco, broaden your itinerary. Though I suspect you don't 'do' canoes :ner:

Oh and replying to your first question, I don't need data to back up what i see every day with my own two eyes (I use motorways daily) :) You may disagree, but as you don't use motorways much, if ever, your "facts" can only be what someone else has told you :)

I think we broadly agree though, that smart motorways are a bit shit.

Lol, I didn't say you didn't. You'll have to get out of the unfortunate habit of assuming general remarks I make are aimed at you!;)

I totally understand and appreciate how you use motorways, which makes sense. We tend not to have a definitive 'B' (or for that matter 'A'). We have a destination to get to, yes, but not within any set time or date (within reason), so simply arrive when we arrive:)

Sounds fab, but I'm not a great swimmer (can barely keep myself afloat), so canoes would freak me out, especially if it capsized:eek:

Could you enjoy the same from the serenity (and relative safety) of a hot-air balloon?:D

I Would love that, I've never been in one. Get up there with the vultures, get their view of the world. No bars and restaurants up there though, which is a shame. We did however find this viewpoint with a cafe/bar, a thousand feet or so above the road/river (it is a gorge), which was probably the next best thing. Called the "Point Sublime", next to the village of La Malene. Beautiful place. Plenty of google pics knocking about, but you know me, can't post 'em :(

Safety? Hot air balloon? You’re having a laugh aren’t you?! There’s no way you’d get me up in one of them!

Personally love flying but I only like to do it when I can look out of a window and see a reassuring “Rolls Royce” logo on the engine beside me!

And a G&T in hand, obviously...
