Reality of electric cars?

“Families bought diesel cars because they wanted to help protect the environment,” says Thomas Ingenlath

What bollocks. 'Families' don't buy cars. Individuals do. And they mostly buy diesels because they do a lot of miles so it works out cheaper. Or did when diesel was quite a bit cheaper than petrol. Now it isn't sales of diesels are right down.

Dunno about electric cars, but I'm investigating converting one of my pushbikes to electric cheaply. Seems there are a multitude of ways of doing this and at the moment I'm weighing up the pros and cons of the options. Range and of course reliability are foremost, if I want to go faster, I've got the motorbike (which never gets used anyway). Could be the car will end up getting even less use (if that's possible).

Spot on. Every single person I know who drives a diesel does it purely because they do 50-60mpg rather than 30-40. This is all that seems to be focused on - most of them even seem to conveniently ignore the higher annual servicing costs!

Everyone I know who drives an electric or a hybrid does so for the cheaper mileage. Nothing to do with protecting the environment either.

If you brought a car out that ran on baby seal blood people would buy them if they thought it would save them a few quid.

Maybe someone could give a piece of advice about air compressors. I'm looking for one, would like to know your opinion about one mentioned in this article about best 12v air compressor (https://carnesmechanical.com/110v-air-compressors/).

walpurgis
27-11-2020, 14:45
If you're planning anything that requires longish periods of use, you do best to get a compressor with a tank and water bleed. If it's just for inflating things, any decent automotive tyre type will do.

struth
27-11-2020, 15:05
just beware most of these small 12v non tank compressors are slowish, and wont reseal a flat that has lost its wall seal. you need a bigger tank type.
the 12v ones lidl sell are usually very good for money and was kept in my boot in my old car. i also have a bigger tank type in my shed which will run air tools and has water trap etc, which i bought years ago in aldi..(although not non stop). alas i dont use it now due to health

Range and of course reliability are foremost, if I want to go faster, I've got the motorbike (which never gets used anyway). Could be the car will end up getting even less use (if that's possible). Is it worth trying to convert the pushbike? Wouldn't it be easier to just buy a new electric bike?

I hear that there may be different reasons for owning one - depending on usage and the rider. Some people want to extend the range - as they can't ride for 20 or more miles, some want to go faster, some want to go up hills - which are tiring. The added weight of the motor and battery can be a disadvantage, and that can affect different riders in different ways. Some would find they might be too slow and hard work on the flat, while others would happily trade that for being able to get up hills. Also, riding for exercise might be a different proposition than riding to get from A to B and back again.

Rumour has it that one can spend £2-3k on an electric bike - though it is possible to spend more than that on a decent racing bike without the electrics.

Are there actually kits for converting regular bikes, and would they really be worth looking at?

If you brought a car out that ran on baby seal blood people would buy them if they thought it would save them a few quid. It's much cheaper to buy a petrol car than an electric one at the moment in most markets. Unless one is doing very high mileage, the capital cost of a new EV is not going to be offset by the significantly cheaper "fuel" cost. There are good and bad things about EVs as they are at present.

Pigmy Pony

I don't imagine it's easy to do high mileages in EVs as things stand, unless you just drive round the block for a living.

Spotted this locally and couldn't resist it, a vintage Gary Fisher 'Tassajara' 13 mountain bike. So then, 2021 and cars. Firstly, I need to get the Range Rover’s coolant leak fixed. First fault after 8 months - hopefully no more!

Secondly, whilst tidying up the garage last week, I couldn’t help noticing that there’s a nice car-sized space free in it. Once my late mum’s estate is divided between my sister and me, plus I’ve done the sensible mortgage/pension/savings/investments stuff with most of it, I feel a four-wheeled toy is called for.

I think I have made my decision and the candidate is not subtle, quiet, slow or, god forbid, diesel-powered. Additionally, the only electric motors in it are the ones for the windows! ;)

It also has a lovely connection to my wonderful mum. Sadly with all this lockdown stuff going on, I don’t know when I’ll be able to get things moving.

Good that you've taught her to 'use her words', so much nicer than a whack round the head with her favourite stiletto :) I'm surprised that a kitchen as well appointed as yours doesn't have a deep fat fryer, home made chips are nicer.

What part of the process confuses you? Is it the potato peeling? Or cutting them into chips? They don't have to be amphibious landing craft-shaped you know. Or is it pressing the 'on button'? Or even getting them out before they become fatty lumps of carbon? I'd say if you can fit and set up a phono cartridge you can probably master chips :)

And modern fryers are completely safe to use - no more drunken slumber while the kitchen burns down.

Dad did all the frying. Marco just spent all the profits on records :) So when you had to work in dad's chippy to earn enough pocket money to amass 1,000's of records, just what did you do if not peel potatoes? Apart from deep-fry your ball bag for a window display? :)

Lol - we had what was called a 'potato-peeling machine', daftee. Even during the 70s it was a regularly used electrical invention in chip shops. Did you think it was all done by hand?

And besides, we had a fryer who did most of the frying, with my dad helping out now and then at the busiest times, and the rest of us stocked up shelves and served customers! There were usually two members of staff [often rather cute girlies:eyebrows:], the fryer, and my dad and I (occasionally my mum, too) - yes it was a busy shop, with queues around the block most Friday nights and weekends!:)

In fact, folks would travel miles to us [football supporters coaches making detours after matches, etc], as the quality of the food was second to none and we'd built up a very good reputation.

Yeah, defo, mate. Plus cafes, ice-cream parlours and restaurants. The old man had two chippies, as did my granddad. My dad's were in Thornliebank and Neilston and my granddad's were in Gallowhill (in Paisley) and Barrhead. Dad started his business in Thornliebank in the 50s, and retired in 1995.

Most of the bill was actually labour as the leak was a split coolant pipe. However, it’s right down the back of the engine so the manifolds, supercharger and a whole lot else had to come out to get at it.

Labour was just under £400 and that’s at an independent Landy specialist. I dread to think how much a main dealer would have charged!

Weren't they a Vauxhall cavalier underneath? Vauxhall later did a similar thing putting their Cavalier in a smart new outfit and calling it a Calibra. i thought the Calibra looked great, and lusted after one of their turbo models, which I once got a ride in :)

Lots of good car stuff on YouTube. Been following Harry’s Garage, he’s currently having a Lancia Fulvia Zagato restored. Lovely thing, I do like a nice classic Lancia-

That narrow angle V4 engine was fairly unique. Nice! Hope he won't need body or trim parts, as bits for the Zagato versions are incredibly hard to come by.

As I recall, the later Mantas were built on a shortened Opel Ascona floorpan/chassis and the Cavalier was basically a rebadged Ascona. I had three GTEs, but didn't like the Calibra.

Just off to my local tyre guy to have a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S fitted to the Brabster:

https://youtu.be/41iQl1wzGD4

My fav performance tyres by a country mile: great grip in both the wet and dry, nicely 'responsive' in a sporty way, and for low-profile/performance designs, quiet and comfortable!

Not cheap though at around £200 each in 255/30/R19.

I went for the F1's a while back mate, mostly because they were about seventy quid cheaper for a set at the time. Think you'd struggle to get a fag paper's worth of difference between them on the road tbh. Very happy with the F1 though. Had the winters on the past few months, be nice to get the F1's back on this weekend though, the winters are ok, but the F1's grip is phenomenal.

Marco
22-02-2021, 13:37
Yeah Ali, I agree. Both are superb, but the PS 4S seems to really suit my car, and are notably quieter than the F1s [could be a Merc thing], which is important to me, and the only area where I could detect a meaningful difference:)

Yup, (but only as rears), hence the comparison:)

They were great, and so you're right to rate them so highly, but defo noisier (at least on my car) than the PS 4S. And aside from the growl from the quad sports exhausts, I like a quiet ride [ahem]:D

Yeah, I know, but that'll soon change when things get more back to normal, and you'll be running around the country again!:)

Aside from the noise factor, there's hardly a baw hair between them, mate. 4S may also have the edge on wear, but it's minimal, and in term of grip and 'feel'/feedback from the road, the 4S gives away little to the Supersports, but if you really push things (on the right road), then the Supersports have it in terms of 'fun factor'.

However, as I rarely drive like that, preferring mostly just to cruise along effortlessly on main roads, although sometimes corner at speed, or accelerate hard in the wet, the 4S give me the confidence to do that safely and securely, as well as offering a comfy and quiet ride, for low-profile performance designs, so highly recommended:cool:

When you're off or on holiday then, take it for a nice run, as it's the ideal car for touring and driving long distances. Have you ever taken a car abroad? I love it, touring France, Italy, Germany, etc.

Test it out on the Autobahn, in the areas where there are no speed limits - great fun, especially when you're doing 150mph in the 'fast lane', and a 911 is up your arse, tooting you to shift!!:D

Lol - would be interesting seeing how it'd handle on those!

Thing is, the ride isn't hard, as you might expect, but really pretty smooth and comfy (especially on these Michelins), even with the sports suspension, but when you want to thrash it around, the grip is there, and for a saloon car, hugs corners like a limpet. It's rock-solid and doesn't drift.

Del grins/giggles like mad when I do that or go fast (but safely) on an appropriate road, as she loves it... Always up for a thrill;) I can just imagine what she'd be like in Kevin's Caterham!!

Anyway, cheers, the Brabster's looking good... Got to keep it clean, as the resident princess won't get into a dirty car, so the inside needs to stay as spotless. Yet (if I give in and allow it) she'll happily sit and eat chips, and if any fall on the floor, guess who has to pick them up...

After a few miles at high speed on the Autobahn, the sensation of speed would be quickly fading, and then it's just a case of seeing how big a number you can get on the speedo (for bragging rights). Followed by some concern about how quickly the fuel gauge is moving.

For serious fun, the Nurburgring would be the place to go. That has to be a 'must' for any visiting petrol head :) Marco, you should give it a shot next time you're driving over there, it wouldn't be much out of your way. And then report back with a review of the new tyres, and whether they helped you beat Sabine Schmidt's Transit van lap time

Lol... The latter is of no real concern, especially with a big diesel. If I were driving a C63AMG, then different ball game:eek:

I gave up at just shy of 160mph, as I had 3 passengers in the car [yes, I know, but apart from Del, they were diehard 'petrolheads', one a seasoned biker], and so didn't want to tempt fate with a blowout or something, but there was still a little more to come. The wind resistance at that speed is considerable.

The fastest I've ever driven was 105mph. It was very late at night on a motorway which I had to myself.

I only did it to see what it was like: didn't do it for too long as I felt both the car and myself would be more comfortable at a lower speed. That said I often drive at 90 - 95 on a motorway if conditions permit, though I find 85mph is the natural speed for me, again conditions permitting.

Lol - was that in your rusty old Rover? If so, it's a wonder it didn't blow up!:D;) Have you tried your new Audi out yet? That'll do a ton, easily:)

It depends on the car you're driving, In the Brabster, I can reach a ton without even trying, and pretty quickly/effortlessly, but most importantly safely - as it has the brakes, tyres, suspension and everything else, to handle high speeds with ease. If it were legal, and the road conditions were right, the car could cruise at a ton all day long, and you wouldn't even know.

That would be the same really with any decent 3-litre+ engine car. That's why I like driving cars with big engines, as everything feels so effortless, but which are sadly being phased out.

I think the engine was doing 5,000 rpm, well below the maximum 'red' section on the dial.

On most motorways unless you drive at 80 -85mph, you won't get far as everyone else is driving at that speed. Might not be legal, but it's a fact.

Yup, I agree, which is why is why the speed limit is 70 (not 80), as they know most folk will do 80/85. If not, they would do 90/95, which with the clueless balloons on the roads these days, often driving cars that haven't been properly maintained, would be a recipe for disaster!;)

Lol - JC and you are 'townies', and have been living/working for too long in or around big cities, hence why your views on that matter are jaundiced!;)

I agree with that premise on the majority of today's overcrowded roads, but not when you have access to the wide-open and often empty roads (especially now) found in North and West Wales, and also in many parts of Scotland, outwith of the environs of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Probably also in certain parts of Devon and Cornwall, or Suffolk/East Anglia.

Honestly, in certain places up here, I could drive for MILES on end, at 70MPH or above, and encounter no hold ups - or depending on the time of day, often any other bugger on the road... Ebay would be you're friend here James, should be few sellers with what you want. No doubt you'll know what size you need. It's Jap so it will be metric (M6, M8 etc).

Or you could try a local place that specialises in fasteners. We have Allthread, and William Moores in Preston. Amazed me just how wide ranging their stock was, and not big money either. Most towns will have something similar I would have thought.

As it’s light, powerful, rear wheel drive and has absolutely no driver aids of any sort, I’m guessing cheap re-moulds would probably be a bad move... ;)

Yes, something else may be out by the time you need new tyres, but for me, I don't think I'll be switching from the PS 4S, or the equivalent from Michelin, as they really suit my car, and are by far and away the best tyres I've ever fitted to the Brabster.

Potentially wasting the best part of a grand on four of something else , which on paper/via word of mouth may be better, but could easily end up worse, is unlikely a risk I'll take. The old adage of why attempt to fix what ain't broken comes to mind...

I wouldn't fit cheap remoulds to ANY car I drove. I've always used the best tyres possible, as for me it's a totally false economy (and potentially fatal error) to skimp on tyres.

Car MOT is due in a few days and checking the mileage I see I've done less than 700 miles in the last year. Not worth having it serviced. I didn't bother last year either, as it had a main dealer full service about 1500 miles previously. I just got the MOT guy to give it a once over and change oil & filter (which won't need changing this time around). I'll check the alternator belt, but that was fine last time I looked. Not worried about keeping up the service history, as the car is not exactly worth a fortune now being seven years old.

Re cars - despite everything probably still managed maybe 4-5k in the last 12 months in several vehicles.

Re tyres - let the tyres go so flat on one that I didn't think it would make it to even the nearest garage to pump one of them up without trashing it on the 2-3 mile drive, so I bought one of these.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0030FBSQ2/ bit cheap and cheerful, and may go wrong, but the tyres are now much more solid and should be possible to drive out to do more adjustments/top ups if needed.

Are you still holding out as an anti-vaxxer, or have you succumbed?

I'm not an anti-vaxxer - and we have now had the first doses. The only agreement I have with anti-vaxxers is regarding compusion to do things if the people concerned have serious and justified concerns - such as they might have allergic reacations.

Indeed, and I was slightly apprehensive about having the jab myself, as I suspect I'd had bad reactions to previous flu vaccinations. This one was trivial - so trivial that I even wonder if it worked!

Yeah, Grant's spot on and knows my feelings on the matter well enough (as outlined).

This is the crux of the matter:

The only agreement I have with anti-vaxxers is regarding compusion to do things if the people concerned have serious and justified concerns - such as they might have allergic reacations.

Exactly...

I'm so unused to being vaccinated for anything (don't even have the flu jab, and probably only had about 2 jabs in my life for anything), so I've got no history to point in the direction of any likely allergic reaction to the Covid one, so simply won't take the chance.

My wife's already had Covid (tested positive and was hospitalised with it, now mostly recovered), and I didn't catch it, or at least not to my knowledge, despite having been with her 24/7 throughout. Therefore, I'm either asymptomatic or immune (certainly seemingly so from any serious adverse effects), so on that basis am happy to take my chances and let my immune system deal with it, if/when I should catch the virus - if indeed I haven't already done so!

Your air pump for the car looks good, but I use nitrogen inflation for my tyres, so when necessary, gets topped up for FREE at my local ATS:cool:

We wondered if in fact we'd already had Covid as we had some moderate illness around last March. Mrs was really ill for one day - it's possible we did experience the virus, but managed to build up some immunity. On the other hand if we hadn't, then catching the nasty thing could have been really bad news.

Sorry to hear about Del being hospitalised - that sounds quite serious. You don't really want to go there if you can avoid it. Glad things are now improving though.

I know a few people who've had the disease - even very recently - and all the ones around our age or maybe ten years younger say it's really not fun, even though they are now recovering. FWIW - and it's your decision - I'd suggest you do go for the jab, but make sure the medics watch for an adverse reaction. If you are likely to, it'll probably be in the first 10-15 minutes or less. Have you ever had a bee sting, or found that eating any hot food (e.g. some spicy stuff) gives you a rash or breathing difficulties? That's the kind of thing to make sure you're covered for - so you'd need to be sure of the competence of the medics. Chances are they'd be OK. The medics do ask questions about previous reactions - and of course whether you are pregnant! :)

I think most people who walk away afterwards aren't going to have a problem, though some may feel ill after a day or so. As I said already, for us this one was totally trivial - much better than the flu ones I've had.

Bugger. Just discovered that the garage selling my mystery car has a new arrival.

Mystery car number 2 is pretty much identical to the car that I promised myself over 25 years ago when I first encountered one, whereas the mystery car number 1 I mentioned previously is a slightly different, more expensive and rarer model that I never even considered originally due to these factors.

So do I want the cheaper one I’ve always lusted after, or the dearer, rarer, louder and probably much scarier one that I’ve been eyeing up since last autumn?

Obviously, I shall use this conundrum as an excuse to try out both but, still, confusion reigns!

Slight snag with the pump for the tyres. It runs off the ciggie lighter socket, and if the engine isn't running the battery might go flat. That's what happened to me, so I've had to charge the battery up again today.

I thought there might be some mains ones, but most seem to be like this one. Hopefully not really a big deal, but merely a slight irritation and a temporary hiccup. At least the tyres are fairly solid now.
The screw on fitting is quite good, though there is a problem getting it off fast enough so as not to lose too much air out of the tyres. This means that the tyres have to be pumped up more to allow for this to happen.

Given the current somewhat constrained circumstances though, this seems to have been a good thing.

That is a bad car... doesn't matter how infrequently you use it, not unreasonable to expect it to work when you do. Anyway, it looks like hybrids are a bit of a dead end - no more made after 2030, along with petrols and diesels. Might as well go for a petrol or diesel, or even full electric if you're able to charge at home.

getting out to try new cars is a no-no for most folk at the moment - if you have a shortlist of contenders, get dealers to bring them to you, make em earn their money :) Them C-HRs aren't cheap, dealer should be looking after you better.

Could be worse - at least you haven't thrown all your hard-earned at it, and can give it back. I assume it's a Motability jobbie. Anita really liked these cars, and she is on the Motability scheme, but that is really off-putting. Shame really, I bet they're great apart from this problem.

its the only issue i have tbh. but its a biggish one. i dont really think issue is it not getting used enough. battery goes from 12v to 4v just like that. that shouldnt happen. toyota are just giving same stock answer they have been using for several years.

My problem is, can i get in a car and can my hoist and scooter. after that if there is a choice then i can look at other aspects. It is a very pleasent car to drive tho and a looker as well.

I haven't used my car for about 10 weeks - it's been sat in the garage (presumably sulking and feeling unloved), so I though I had better see if it was still OK.

Initial impressions were encouraging: the engine immobiliser light was still winking, and the car unlocked as it should. Pleased to say it started immediately without hesitation, so I applied a bit of revs to 'top up' the battery for about 20 minutes, whilst I listened to the car radio.

Marco
16-03-2021, 22:50
...so I applied a bit of revs to 'top up' the battery for about 20 minutes, whilst I listened to the car radio.

Wouldn't it have been better taking it for a quick drive, while listening to the radio? The thought of sitting revving an engine for 20 mins fills me with horror... ;)

Also, 10 weeks without using your car - what about shopping? Have you been able to source *everything* you've needed during that time within walking distance? If so, you're lucky. I've been using my car regularly for food shopping trips and going to church twice a week (which is around 20 mins away).

Cars need to be driven. The worst thing for them is being left sitting idle for long periods.

That said, the Brabster always starts first time, no matter how long it's laid idle, despite being nearly 12 years old and left outside in all weathers:)

How so?, the rpm would have been about the same. And driving in the rain is not fum to my way of thinking. If it's fine tomorrow I may take it out for a spin.

Leaving the environmental issue aside for a moment:

https://www.quora.com/What-bad-can-come-to-your-car-from-revving-it-a-lot

If you're sitting revving your engine (under no load) for 20 mins, at similar RPMs to those achieved when driving at, say, 50-60mph down a dual-carriageway, then that is fundamentally NOT good for the engine, mate:nono:

Rain or no rain, next time drive it!;)

What isn't fun is sitting revving an engine for 20 mins lol, and it's not very good for the environment either...

Marco.

Having your car ticking over for 20 minutes isn't very good for your own environment, taking it for a spin is worse for every bugger else's environment. Having said that, a car is more than just an engine, the suspension, brakes, coolant system etc all need to be "worked". Even one lap of the block is better than nothing :)

I agree that driving ought to be fun, but there isn't much of that to be had at the moment, what with the Covid travel restrictions. Just driving local is shit.

Revving an engine at anything over fast idle is pointless to top up a battery, it’ll make zero difference.
Alternators are regulated in output, so leaving it at idle compared to revving the engine is pretty much the same result.
Obviously if ones car has been sat for a while, then taking it for a spin is far more beneficial.
I’m failing a few cars for seized brake calipers/pads and warped discs (due to corrosion) because the cars have been sat for nearly a year.
Just a few miles a week would have prevented that happening, and kept the battery topped up.

Indeed, but I'd argue more fun that sitting revving the engine for 20 mins, while twiddling your thumbs (or something else, which may help relieve the monotony):eyebrows:)

Plus it depends on the roads you have access to in your local area.

I've got a largely empty dual carriageway (A483), with a 70mph speed limit, less than 5 mins from my door, so taking the Brabster for a blast along that, to keep the engine, battery and car in good fettle, for me would be far preferable to the former, and which as Jon has eloquently stated, does next to hee-haw good.

My point was that sitting revving the engine for 20 mins is fruitless (in terms of properly charging the battery) and also bad for the engine, so if you've going to start the car, and subsequently pollute the environment, then you may as well drive the bloody thing!:ner:;)

i'd say 1500 to 2000rpm is about right.. a run is better tho all round, as ticking over speed isnt great for the car . brakes, sprigs etc need a workout too. at tickover if youve got a few things on like heater etc you may not actually charge anything

One thing about the Superduke I really don’t like is the shitty steering damper.
I did strip it down and put a heavier weight oil in it, which helped, but it wasn’t adjustable, so..
This arrived today and has 22 damping positions

So you don't like a good tank slapper then? I've never had a steering damper on the Blade, but then I don't push it that hard, and it's not so much of a beast as the KTMs.

I did once get a morning riding an RR5 Fireblade which had a factory damper, and I didn't like it. Just less "entertaining" somehow. Might have been the bike though, not the damper, but it put me off buying one for mine.

I had a RR5 Blade with the HESD electronic damper and as I’ve said on here before, it was the most predictable and dare I say a little boring bike to ride.

So I shouldn't rev up our remaining petrol car to 3-4k for a few minutes then?

I've read that just starting a car is likely to take quite a chunk out of the battery, so not worth pussying around. Ideally it's best not to start a car if you're not going to drive it. However recently cars are often idle for a while, so things can go wrong. In normal times a petrol car would probably be driven at least once a week, and should go for at least 4 miles or so to keep the battery charged - ideally more and at reasonably high speeds - which also gets oil around the engine, stops the carbon from building up, and the driving probably gets rust off the brakes and loosens the suspension, and frees up the sterring a bit etc. AFAIK it's not a good idea to leave a car idle for a long while.

Clearly these are not normal times, and with our EVs we don't tend to drive the petrol Peugeot as much as we did before, so that's not so good for the poor thing. So sometimes I do rev it up to 3000 rpm on the drive for 2 or 3 minutes just to check that it's working OK.

Is that a bad idea?

No, it's utterly pointless at those revs.
If voltage was dependant on revs and the alternator wasn't regulated, you'd boil your battery dry in 5 minutes.
Leave it on tickover or better just go for a drive.

Going for a drive hasn't been so easy over the last year - Covid restrictions, weather etc. Not so bad now though.
I never thought that tickover idling would do much good. If not actually going out, how long should idling be done to not run the battery down - given that starting the engine takes something out of it? Maybe it's pointless starting a car engine anyway if it's not going to go on a run, but I have noticed problems if the engine isn't fired up at least once in a while.

There’s little point in running an engine at idle - many car handbooks specifically tell you not to do this to warm it up, for example. Sitting there revving it is even more pointless because, as above, the alternator’s electrical output is regulated. More revs don’t mean more/faster charging!

You’re far better off buying an intelligent battery charger and using it every couple of weeks to top the battery up and then driving the car once a month or so.

Some friends of ours are having some fairly major house renovation done and their house and driveway has been a building site for the last 6 months. As a result, one of their cars has been out of the way on our driveway since last September. Since then, I’ve stuck it on the charger for a day every two to three weeks and take it out for a half hour’s drive once every month to six weeks. It’s absolutely fine.

There is no reason for the engine to kick in as nothing was draining the aux battery.
If the stereo was blaring music, then the engine would start to get the MG's charging the battery.
As long as you leave it in "park" and not neutral, then you're good to go.

If you're having that many problems with aux batteries draining fast or dying then my money would 100% be on any after market accessories fitted to the car.
I think you've said you have lifting gear fitted?
It's a piece of cake to do a drain test whilst disconnecting various fitted equipment to see what may be causing the problem.

Doesn't matter if its used, its whether its connected or not.
I just find it hard to conceive that you're going through so many batteries and the fault lies within the OE electrical system.
To find a drain fault is easy but labour intensive, maybe the dealer finds it easier and cheaper to put in a warranty claim for a new battery rather than tie up a technician for hours trying to find a drain problem.
Manufacturers won't and don't pay much for a lengthy diagnosis of a problem.

Not sure anyone under fifty would get the joke. They'd probably think it was Ed China and be bringing their cars for it to fix.

Although on the plus side, once the horse has fixed them you could use them to run around in for a few days before telling the owners to come and collect them. I used to know a mechanic that did that.

I mean that's cost-free motoring and the profit from the repairs business would more than cover the expense of stabling the horse.

Would it perhaps have been rescuable if there had been any form of main battery maintenance in the few years before it went totally belly up? I rather doubt it.

It was going quite well, but with some odd behaviours in the months before lockdown, and after that it just went off completely.

Now we have EVs so there won't be any engine to charge up any of the batteries, though the battery technology could still let us down in eight or more years time. I'm not over optimistic. One of our petrol cars lasted over 20 years before we had to scrap it.
