Have you ever tasted Stella in Belgium? Different animal altogether.... Rather like Guinness in Dublin, so I'm told :)

Marco.

No, but I buy the pint cans if I can as they are smoother, not sure if they are brewed in Belgium but they are a different brew.

Re Guinness, the London brewery closed about 15 years ago so all Guinness you can buy in the UK is brewed in Dublin, and yes, it is noticeably better. Of course you've got your Foreign Extra that they also brew themselves out in the Caribbean, Nigeria, a few other places I think. You can get it here too. That has a belt to it.

Marco
25-08-2017, 22:26
Interesting on the last bit. In terms of Guinness (Snapper's a big fan), all the stuff you can buy in the UK may be brewed in Dublin, but the difference is drinking it in a pub in Dublin, especially where they know how to treat it and serve it :)

The Stella in Belgium is just awesome, so smooth and creamy, unlike in comparison with the acrid cats piss you get here, under the same name (sorry)! I couldn't believe just how good it was on draught over there this year, when we stopped for lunch at a little village in the country, en-route to Germany. Pure nectar!

Marco.

There is the issue of 'travel' I agree, no doubt the best pint of anything is always the one you have in the brewery. As for treating it, well it is almost 30 years since I last worked as a cellarman, but there is nothing to it, you just plug into it the same as any keg beer.

Stella used to be like that here Marco. I just don't understand how the British manage to adulterate decent lagers once they get licensed to brew them here. Do they really think we are that undiscerning?

Fosters was a nice drop until it was brewed here. Stella, as you suggest is now crap. Holsten was a lovely drink thirty or more years ago, it's shite now. The last time I had a lager that tasted the way it should, was in an Indian restaurant and that was Tuborg Export. I believe an Indian company has the Tuborg import concession, as the only place you see it in the UK these days is in Indian shops and eateries!

Pubs I frequented both in Dublin especially but Belfast too they poured it constantly. And I mean the tap never stopped.
Guinness never travelled well and Dublin stuff it by far the best Ive tasted

No doubt proper Fosters and Tuborg were a good drop, I think the Fosters came in on the back of Paul Hogan and 'Crocodile Dundee'. The proper one is slightly rich and very smooth, the UK version is like fizzy piss.

Anybody remember Lamot lager. That disappeared from general availabilty in the UK donkeys years ago. Don't even know if the brand is still going, but it was my favourite lager, dryish flavour, velvet smooth and nectar like, with a Champagne like aftertaste on the palate. Just gorgeous. Strong too. Three pints and you knew you'd had a beer.

Macca

Maybe down south you had Fosters for years but it was brand new in Liverpool in about 1985. :D

Used to buy it from Bargain Booze half price. They had pallets of it. It was drinkable. That was 26 years ago, though.

Indeed, and that adversely affects the flavour - no question.

In terms of 'treatment', what I was referring to was in terms of pouring and settling. I'm reliably informed that in Dublin pubs it takes a good 5-6 mins, or so, before each (lined up in a row) pint of Guinness is ready to be served to a customer, as the glass is half filled, allowed to settle, then slowly topped up and allowed to settle once more, to ensure the thickest, creamiest head :)

All these things matter, to a connoisseur (or simply someone wanting to enjoy the perfect pint of Guinness). If I drank Guinness, that's the sort of stuff I'd value, as someone who likes things to be as good as they possibly can. In terms of cellar management, there's also the issue of how clean landlords keep their pipes - but that's another matter.

I also like drinking ales in a proper thick pint pot with a handle. Lagers/Pils I prefer in a nice thin, fluted glass, like this, which I was frequently drinking beer from in Germany. Bitburger is also one of my favourite Pils-style beers:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/UoF0Tn.png

Now *that* is how you serve Pils-style beer (ice-cold in small glasses, to keep it cool), with a proper creamy head, not how 'lager' is usually served here in the UK, in mundane looking pint glasses, flat-looking and filled up to the brim, and not always exactly chilled. Quality, not just quantity!

I also bought some of those glasses direct from the brewery/museum in Bitburg, and brought them home: https://www.bitburger.de/brauerei-tradition/besuchen-sie-uns/

Fascinating place

Castlemaine XXXX, now there's a blast from the past! I totally agree with you about buggering it up, by brewing it here. The same applies with pretty much any Pils-style lager/beer, including Kronenbourg 1664. That's another one that tastes like cats piss here, compared with what you get on draught in France!

San Miguel is a different animal in Spain, Grolsch in Holland - the list goes on! Let's fact it, Brits are piss-poor at brewing decent 'lager', and simply can't replicate the proper flavour of the foreign Pils-style beers, even by following the recipe.

The best I've ever tasted, in that respect, is draught Wrexham lager, simply because the brewery here was built by Germans, and the beer produced to a special Pils recipe, which has been strictly adhered to for years. Honestly, if you're ever in Wrexham, go to one of the local pubs and order a pint of Wrexham lager. It'll be the nearest thing you'll get to proper continental lager in the UK :)

Where it's *at*, in the UK, is in brewing real ales, not lager, and there are (probably 1000s) of superb varieties of such, from craft breweries. But lager, leave that to the foreigners!! ;)

A guy I used to work with and who lived in Holland 25-30 years ago maintained that Grolsch was the super market lager that the dutch only bought when they couldn't afford anything better. (that was everything else... :D)

Golsch was originally marketed as an upmarket product in the UK, anyone remember those white capped bottles??

Yes, 'Bros-ettes' (fans of the group Bros) used to put the white caps on their shoes! :mental:

Having visited holland this year, and stayed out in the sticks, I can indeed confirm that there are far better beers there than Grolsch. My favourite was Gulpener: http://www.gulpener.nl/onze-bieren/

Absolutely amazing stuff, and amongst the best I've tasted!

Nice one, Robin. You can get it in supermarkets here. I brought some back in the car, along with two sizes of glasses. I always like drinking beer out of a nice glass, preferably so that the beer matches with its own glass. They're big on that abroad. It's those little touches that for me add class! :)

Well, it's not Saturday night, but I'm having a beer! One of the German 'craft' variety, a pale ale, brought back from our recent trip to Berlin, in a rather nice Belgian Orval glass:

I've been buying out of date Guinness and it's fine.

I've still got a bottle of Concorde wine that I got free with a Chinese meal in 1999. I'm probably not going to drink that now. It was bad enough stuff when it was in date.

Yup, definitely one to 'sip and savour'... And that's what I'm into now: quality over quantity. However, if you enjoy the likes of Leffe, and think that's good, then Tongerlo will shatter that impression instantly, by moving things onto a totally different level! ;)

Yes, it's *that* good....

Nice one. I'll see if they've still got some. I like German festival beer.

Have you tried any of the Oktoberfest beers? The Paulaner stuff, for example, is superb!

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/m6MuzH.jpg

Waitrose were doing a promotion last month of the above, with a free glass. Needless to say, I got some a) because I love the beer, but also b) to add to my glass collection - and that big one was a belter! I'll post a pic when I open the next can :)

It's the only 'posh' supermarket we bother with, simply because some of the stuff they sell really is top notch, rather than pretending to be such, like M&S... Wish we had a Booths near us - now that really is fab!

https://www.booths.co.uk/food-and-drink/

The best supermarket in the UK, bar none. Our nearest one is in Knutsford, 40 miles away. Might take a trip out there sometime.

Anyway, if you see any beers around by Paulaner, just get them as they'll be superb :)

This is a warning to all those who enjoy something different now and then. I was in the beer section of the super market looking for something different. Then I spot this stuff called “Best Damn Root Beer”, so I think, “Hey I like Root Beer”, so I buy it for a tall price. And maybe you’ll like it, but I thought it was awful! It tasted like someone had poured root beer into a malt liquor, now I’ve got 5 more bottles of the stuff and don’t think I’ll ever drink it. How do you mess up root beer? Somebody must like it I guess? Or they wouldn’t sell it, would they? Let’s just say I can’t recommend it.

Did you know that alcohol has no impact on the efficacy of most antibiotics and those you shouldn't mix drink with are generally the type prescribed for 'women's problems'? :)

Macca

Some of them will really screw you up if you mix them with alcohol. I was on them once, no boozing for 2 weeks. Thought that was a bit rough so checked with a friend who is a nurse. When I told her the type I was on she said don't drink on them whatever you do.
