Lol - I must be the only one then who always reads them - especially when it could affect my health! Luckily, the only tablets I take is (very occasionally) paracetamol, for the odd headache, which I get if I go too long without eating or drinking and become dehydrated.

Marco.

:lol: That'll be the day! More likely that the food/drink intake is (occasionally) greater than the output, creating a 'backlog' :)

Marco

Yesh, all that natural goodness helps 'firm up' my plops, but sometimes when I'm really busy (it does happen occasionally:D) I forget to drink enough fluids or delay eating for too long, skip breakfast or whatever, I'll get seriously bad headaches, in which case I'll take a couple of paracetamol - but *that* is it for me in terms of tablets!

I detest pumping my body full of chemicals, as there are always nasty side-effects. Really we should be practicing the use of more natural (plant-based) remedies for our ailments, Chinese medicine, etc, which in many cases is better and much less intrusive, but of course that doesn't suit the financial interests of the multi-billion pound making fat-cat pharmaceutical companies!!

Some of us have no choice on the drug front, it’s do or die prematurely, however I have questioned a lot of what I’ve been prescribed due to adverse reactions.

I was awake again at 12:45, probably due to a cold and worrying about another CT scan which I am sat waiting for, I should get the results next week. The last year feels like a continuous stream of medical appointments and procedures, never mind. [emoji3]

You have all my sympathy. Just got my wife back home after a week in hospital. Chemo wiped out her immune resulting in sepsis and then other issues caused by domestos levels of a number of antibiotics.
It’s all scary stuff. Truly hope that all turns out well and we can all enjoy a restful Xmas.

Absolutely, and as Steve said, you have my sympathy. However, some folks [unlike you] are obsessive pill-poppers/hypochondriacs, and forever taking this tablet or that for their minor ailments, and bothering busy doctors, when most of the time whatever it is mother nature will cure in the fulness of time.

I've got to be *really* bad with something before I'll bother a doctor, and in terms of pills for pain relief, will often choose to suffer instead than take any form of chemicals. I do feel for those like yourself though, Adrian, who have little option but to taken them.

Have you ever experimented with some natural remedies/herbal medicines though, or is that not a viable option to treat the condition(s) you suffer from?

Natural/herbal remedies are not always a good thing. Some modern medicine is actually based on earlier "natural" medicines, but some seems to be based on supserstition. Some people who turn to such natural medicines do so out of desperation.

Best wishes to all who are taking significant medication here - natural or otherwise - but take care, and try to stay happy - and do read the instructions and other documents relating to what you take!

Steve, thanks for your kind words, I hope your wife wins her personal battle, any serious illness is hard to deal with, and it can be very hard for those nearest and dearest. All you can doo is be there and support her, just like my Sue is for me.

I’m ok, just a bit numb with it all, but I battle on and keep popping the tablets.

Hi Marco

Thanks for your concern most appreciated. Unfortunately I am one of the yearly many diagnosed with Cardiovascular disease in the UK. A fact not many realise is it kills more people than Cancer.

As for natural replacements for drugs it is a very difficult area with CVD, however I was prescribed a product called Omacor which is a refined fish oil very similar to cod liver oil, it is very high in omega 3 and 6, in 4 weeks it halved my cholesterol level and I am now 2.5 to 3 regularly, with 1/3 being the bad LDL which is fine.

Cheers

It is available on the NHS as they trialed it and got proven results. The consultant on the cardiac ward when u had my bypass prescribed as he said the Gp would not want to as 30 tablets are £25 and I have one in the morning and one at night. In the consultants words the gps try to protect their budgets, but if the hospital prescribes it the GP has to.

I told a friend and she persuaded her GP to prescribe it and she has nearly halved her cholesterol level.

There is a new drug being trialled hooch is a pcsk9 enzyme inhibitor, this enzyme stops the body getting rid of cholesterol, so inhibit it and then get rid of cholesterol. It is injected 2-4 times a year and it works, it is seen as the end of statins in the future.

Now that really is interesting.
Not heard of Omacor.. however back in 1997 we went to live in India. I’d been given the job of developing the business out there for Croda International. They were big producers of super refined oils, including fish, borage, evening primrose etc. The products were so pure that they could be used for injectables and in fact the fish oil supplied to Seven Seas for their low taste fish oil.
Being before the internet we used to get regular packs sent to us with all the medical research on the benefits of supplements donating omega 3&6, DHA and GLA. It was powerful stuff and for years me and my wife would regularly take oil capsules.
Now ... I’ve got really lazy and not bothered for a few years now. My cholesterol has now gone over 7.
Time to revisit all this.

I did a bit of googling, and Omacor/Croda cropped up a fair bit so there is a tie in. Not sure exactly what, but I suspect developments from when I was involved.
There is a load of good science behind this. It’s not just the same ‘natural medicine’ link.
I don’t know if you remember the film Lorenzo’s Oil, but that was all about Croda developing an oil to help a Brazilian boy with a condition called ALD. A disease that effected the nerve endings. It had limited success at the time, but definitely had an impact and has been further developed since.

Then there was also a combination of borage and fish oil that got encapsulated in a really thick gelatin. This meant the capsule didn’t break open until it reached the bowel. It then helps to reduce inflammation from Krohns disease.

So.. it’s not just a whim for me to try this. I know it’ll work, and I really need to get my preventative health in better shape.
Thank you again!

You need to spend some time tracking down exactly where they are entering. Once found block that and any other entrance off.
Usually the easiest spot for them is close to where they can access food. They are smart in terms of gaining access. It will be
like a busy highway to them, that they are using in the early hours of the morning.

Another observation if you already have them inside, you either need a cat or a dog to show you where they are, to best place traps
being careful your best friend doesn't get trapped too. Once they are firmly outside, you will hear them trying to gain access,
but will leave you alone once they cannot get in. They simply move on to the next house that has easy access. So block the holes they
are using off.... you should get some peace then.

No doubt you've tried pretty much everything, but I find that reading a book gets my brain relaxed enough to drop off after a few minutes. No good the book being too much of a 'page turner', and magazines are a no-no. But then if the story is too boring, my mind will just wander to whatever I'm trying to switch off from.

Big heavy books are excellent for aiding sleep - if the story doesn't do the trick, get someone to whack you over the head with it :)

I don't normally have a problem getting off to sleep, but aches and pains kick in after a while, waking me up. I could do with something to numb the aches a bit and will last through the night, and that is not too strong and not potentially addictive. Not going to go on about it though, you and Adrian have it much worse, and you have my sympathy.

I'm not sure which one, but I have a problem with one of the toes on my right foot, and when the weather's bad (wet) sometimes walking gets very hard - specifically because of that toe. Could be coincidence though, but now you mention it .... I don't see your argument that it's likely that injuries should become arthritic - it's a possibility, but you express likelihood.

We had a smart meter installed a couple of years ago, and what a revelation! Who knew that tumble dryers used a lot of electric? Shame it's not smart enough to bring the washing off the line when it starts pissing down. :(

What really winds me up though is the current TV ad where kids are thanking us for getting a smart meter, and doing our bit for the planet. I'd like to make an advert thanking the kids for walking to school, thereby doing their bit for the planet. Lazy little shites :steam:

A couple of quick questions, which no doubt will show my ignorance on the subject, but would "Scexit" (see what I did there), definitely be a good thing? How will trade with Europe work out then? Hopefully the Scottish people won't be subjected to all the "we'll be so much better off independent" bollox that Boris spouted.

Charming.

Sorry Grant and to others North of the Border, but it is for some of us becoming rather painful. The Union has been in existence for several hundred years now and I would say most have benefited from it in some way or other, on both sides of the border (which does not really exist). I just do not understand what or how devolution from the Union will benefit Scotland. Also from my understanding the SNP as part of separation wants the remainder of the UK to give a substantial amount of money to Scotland, for what reason? Maybe I do not understand all the issues but are we really going back hundreds of years in time and what for?

Anyway that is all I am going to say on the subject, and hopefully have not upset too many of you.

Excellent plan !!
Means we get Empress Nicola instead of Head Oaf Bojo :lol:I have another plan. The SNP starts putting up candidates in English elections from now on, subject to resources. Probably target seats where the Cons have limited strength. Otherwise dictator Boris and any who follow him can just keep saying nyet to any proposals about Scotland, even if the whole of Scotland turns yellow.

Re becoming mortgage free and living in Kirkcaldy, I’ve a friend who lives there - says it’s OK - but he’s retired and doesn’t have to work. Mortgage free is a good idea, but not everyone can do that. Overpay the mortgage as much as you can, and sink any windfall sums of money into it, and you might get there. Not everyone is fortunate enough to do this, though. The strategy I mentioned re over payments will help in any case, providing living doesn’t become too grim. The strategy you’re thinking of - moving to an area with lower property values can work, provided you can survive - for example keep a job, or other circumstances are OK. Moving to an area with lower property values will probably only work for you if you’d actually like living in the new area. Moving back to the original area, if you ever thought about that, could be hard or impossible. I know of people who moved to a new area, didn’t like it, and then moved back - an expensive procedure.

I have retired and don’t have to work.
However I still have a mortgage that I choose to keep because my pension fund investments returns are far greater than the cost of the mortgage.

In an uncharacteristic moment (drink may have been involved), I agreed to get rid of the system in the basement.
Why I did this is unclear, which is why I’m convinced drink must have been involved.

The upside is that funds raised from disposal are being used to enhance the main system in the living room.

Maybe that’s why I agreed. Anyway, it transpires that on moving I will have one system.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkFine if you

1. Always have a good internet or phone connection
2. Are happy with the audio and video quality - though some are very good - Qobuz apparently very good stereo sound, though not multi-channel.
3. Are not concerned about a provider going out of business, or otherwise causing you a problem.

All very relevant and good points.

It’s all evolving rather quickly.

I like apple products and the way stuff ‘just works’... however the issue the article highlights reflects the tension between fan based users and the corporate structure that wants maximum profit.
When I first used a Mac mini to play Audirvana I was chuffed to bits to use the optical out to feed a dac. Then I built up my flac files on a NAS drive, having given up on iTunes for the reasons stated.
Then like an idiot I thought it a brilliant idea to ‘upgrade’ the operating system as the computer was asking me to do.
The optical out function got removed. Apple encouraging its ‘customers’ to stream.
Thank god Audirvana developed upnp streaming ... allowing me access to several pi dac machines round the house, playing NAS files again.

I liked Quboz, but got frustrated by their limited library and switched to Tidal.
Still haven’t got my head around paying £20 a month to ‘rent’ music.
However.. there are a number of advantages for me that I’m learning to embrace. Finding new music first and foremost. Then I’ve found the Bluetooth in my car is quite adequate quality- so with the tidal app on my phone I can download albums for the car.. and then play to a Dali Katch during periods when I get work to do and stay over somewhere.

Pros and cons.

You mean the software wouldn't drive the optical out any more? If so *****rds.
I've got a Mac Mini - but don't use it too much. It hadn't occurred to me that Apple woud disable hardware functions. The optical out still works on my MacBook Pro - and it's currently running High Sierra - 10.13.8.

Sounds as though I should be really careful before doing an upgrade, or was it just a Mac Mini thing, or just some other incompatibility in your system?

The only reference I've found to dropping the optical out so far is to the new Apple TV - https://www.macworld.com/article/2983252/apple-tv-drops-optical-audio-out-how-to-pump-up-the-volume-again.html - not the Mac series computers.

It wasn’t that the optical was disabled.. it just never worked properly again. It was quite widely reported at the time.
I even exchanged emails with the guy that runs Audirvana about it.. just as frustrating for them as they were building a business partly on using the Mac mini as a hifi server. Have no idea if other Mac models were affected.
They may even have resolved the issue with later updates. I gave up using the Mac to directly feed a dac.
However on the bright side it got me exploring the whole world of raspberry pi’s, culminating recently in acquiring a pecan pi dac. Awesome bit of kit.
I have also just bought a 4 year old Mac mini from a guy on Pink Fish (as in last week!),
I have to say it’s an awful lot better/faster than my old one. Haven’t tested the optical out though!
Don’t really need to as Audirvana plays from the Mac mini via upnp to all my pi’s.
Quality is very good, especially the one with Orchard Audio’s Pecan.

Anyroad , a nice cup of Ovaltine and then go and see if I felt sleepy again - I think in my case its anxiety (coupled with this latest cold ):)Colds can have various effects. Sometimes, perhaps with medication or a whisky etc. before bed one sleeps right through. OTOH, they [colds] can cause breathing difficulties, which your body may notice and wake you up. I find Lemsip or similar helps if that happens, or (and completely against medical advice) use Lemsip and/or cough syrup (Actifed?) plus vodka. The last suggestion is only to be used in desperation - otherwise it may prove disastrous. Anti-histamines (hay fever tablets - the mild sort) may also help sometimes, before resorting to severe measures.

Marco

...Yup, which is why it's so important if you are stressed, to de-stress before going to bed - chillax with some choons, read a book, have a quick chug ,or whatever:eyebrows: as going to bed stressed is no good whatsoever.

My 'body clock' seems to be pretty reliable. I was up until 1.30am, watching a film, so a *very* late one for me, and woke up just after 10am, so had my usual 9-10 hours of kip, just the same as I would when going to bed at my usual time, around 10-11pm, and wakening up at 8am:)

We had.a similar issue with a cheap present “Cinema” light box - something like these - https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=light+boxes+with+letters&crid=1SZG1WFH7GZEV&sprefix=Light+b%2Caps%2C181&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_6_7

Maybe you didn’t get any extra symbols - such * ? Etc. Then you could have S*ITBA?

As it happened I’d bought two, and they were very cheap, so maybe I’ll see if the local shop has any more to get the extra letters. We’re really talking about something the price of a cup of coffee here - not quite a pound shop, but almost.

I’m not quite sure why you want to teach your granddaughter such words - she’ll probably learn them soon enough without your help.

PS - always learning - “arigato” is Japanese for “thanks” it seems.

If you came up with that idea, I'm clearly your kind of people :)I have a friend, whom I've known for many years. When I was at school I'd go round to his house. His father assured us that one of his work colleagues used to do just that. I never fully believed it - but he was very persuasive. OTOH his colleague would have been at least 30 years old, so a youngster who practised might get ahead of the game.

Maybe go in search of a whisky bottle - but which one to choose? I could listen to some music I suppose - I really want to get to be tired enough to go back to bed, but it ain't happening right now.

I find Lidl a more peaceful shop & in some cases i found the Fruit & veg a bit better, certainly more veriety i find. Once upon a time the market stalls were the place to go for best fresh Produce but these days it is not the case. They dont shift a great deal & cannot afford to throw it away like a supermarket chain could so keep trying to sell it on hence it is in no way fresh.

Regarding Fresh fish. I know a guy goes out early & fetches it fresh from the docks, something a supermarket would not do because of the logistics involved. This seller clears the whole of his stall off guarenteed so you know full well nothing will be packed in ice & stored till next day..

Good point about the freshness of veg. I'm sure that's almost always the case, except when you buy it straight from a farm (no middle man). We've got a few like that round here, but are often too lazy to use them:)

I would like to put forward one of my customers for membership of the Insomniacs club - she texted me at 5am to ask if I could fit smoke alarms at some of her properties, including her home. But I know what these tenants are like, none of them will want me rocking up before 11am and ruining their lie ins, so why the hurry?

She must think I don't need my beauty sleep, so I suppose I should be flattered, but this is the same lady who was flashing her uncovered nether regions to my builder mate last year, so perhaps I should also be worried :(

She goes to the gym every day, as she doesn't have to work. Good looking, and in great shape. She really didn't need to shell out for her shop-bought pair, but when you've got £15-20 million knocking about I suppose you run out of things to buy pretty quick. So no, not much going for her.

My mate could easily have given in to temptation and God knows she did put it on a plate for him, but it's to his credit that that his wife and kids are much more important :) Last time he got roped in to working at her house he took me along as chaperone, and her disappointment upon seeing me was clear to see. But the work he was carrying out didn't need any help from me, so I got paid just for being there :)

I'm a bit older than 'said' girlie but I don't act like that and never have even when I was younger and the perfect '10'... I guess it takes all sorts... ;)

I've never heard of Spelunking' but I've not had children either...

Shame my names not Lucy mind.... :stalks:

Perfect 10? Where did you buy your clothes, Dorothy Perkins? And you're right, it does take all sorts, it makes the world more interesting:)

Indeed... And neither has Del (nor would she), and she's still a "perfect 10", but 'imperfect' in other ways, which at times can be quite entertaining;)

As an aside thought...

Money wise (as Steve mentioned it!) that just doesn't do it for me...years ago I went out with a millionaire for a while, not because of his money but because he was a thoroughly nice guy, funny and just lovely... ok it didn't work out but there you go :D
