Ignore old "Billowing Quilt", sleeping is ok, but all the interesting things happen while awake. Just how good does your music sound while in the land of nod? And films are always best appreciated while conscious.

Mrs. P not sleeping too well at the moment. We went to bed at 11pm and she was up again at 12.30 :( Apparently I shouted "Get off me!" at 1am, which she heard from the other end of the house, of which I have no recollection. She was still up at 6.30 when I got up.

When I get home later she will probably be in bed, and I'll be forced to play my records really quiet. Some people have no consideration. Maybe I can persuade her to put in some earplugs.

Weel... Del and I went to bed last night at 9.30pm, as we'd been out in the heat working in the garden all day, so were rather tired, and we both just got up half an hour ago!:eyebrows: It was bloody warm last night though, so I slept naked outside the sheets with the window open a little, and let the breeze blow over my 'bits', and was slowly lulled off to the land of nod...

I'm never in bed much before midnight as a rule, but last night I was in bed by 11.15 and slept right through till 7.50. I had a different sort of dream than usual, as well; this was an action-packed adventure set in some African country, instead my usual dreams about work, which are even more boring than work was, plus I don't get paid.

In my 'action' dreams I always end up running out of ammunition. Freud would have a field day I'm sure. Dreams recently have been a confused mess, no strong storyline. A bit like a French film.

My 'work' dreams have become increasingly concerned about food; eg queuing up at a staff canteen and worrying that there'll be nothing left by the time I get served, or organising catering for an event and realising that there won't be enough to go around. Fighting mercenaries in the jungle made a nice change.

Kryten : According to Freud's lexicon of dream symbols, flying is supposed to be a metaphore for sex.

Rimmer : Absolute poppycock - I dream of flying all the time. It's certainly nothing to do with sex. It's always the same dream: I'm in a Boeing seven-two-seven, it can't take off. I'm sitting there with a tiny bag of nuts I can't get open. Then suddenly, after one giant tug - much to my embarrassment - the whole bag explodes over all of my crew. Now, tell me - because I don't see it - how on Earth is that anything to do with sex?

I rarely dream about anything that I can vividly remember afterwards, unless there's something particular on my mind. I just tend to sleep - VERY deeply - as soon as my bonce hits the pillow!

Getting harder to do that now, with these really warm days, as by the time I get to bed, the bedroom is like a freakin' oven!!

A hot/stuffy bedroom is about the only thing that stops me sleeping, but even that, not for long....

Dreamt that I had acquired a mint condition Morris Ital - Yeah, who knows? - and was giving a lady friend a lift. I was demonstrating to her that the automatic aerial lift/lower still worked and became distracted, causing me to crash into a friend's mint condition Austin Allegro, badly denting his off side rear wing. Fortunately he was quite sanguine about it.

Might have been an aftermarket item - I fitted one to my Mk 2 Escort, they were popular in the 80s. Maybe there's a bloke out there (probably called Derek) who dreamt that he fitted one to his Ital, then sold it to some bloke in Stoke.

I remember me and my brothers trying to convince my dad to get an Austin Princess (or might have been the 'Ambassador by then, same thing really) but he reckoned it would cost too much in petrol and bought a Metro instead. The HLE 'economy' version. Tight as a duck's arse.

I googled 'Austin Princess' last night (apparently they were mistakenly called "Austin" Princess.) Well what else would you call them? Answers on a post card. I was looking to see if the Princess had a facility to 'talk' to the driver, but could find no mention of that. Perhaps that was also something I dreamt. Maybe the Princess was a victim of some BL boffin's mischief who used the aforementioned subliminal advertising technology to make the car say "Don't buy me, I'm shit".

It was the early Maestro and Montego models that talked. Although being British Leyland it would go faulty very quickly and got on people's nerves and so they discontinued it.

There were a number of cars from Austin/BMC/BL that wore the Princess name, including the rare Rolls Royce powered and rather desirable 'Princess 'R', shown below.

As for the Morris Marina, it was actually a home mechanic's dream, as it was so simple mechanically. Built with tried and tested components like the 'A' Series and 'B' Series pushrod engines and leaf sprung rear axle, which were bulletproof. The design and performance were old school and derided by many, but the cars would keep going economically with no bother at all if maintained properly. They were rust prone though and the front wings would rot through above the headlights within 18 months from new.

That model of Princess used a four litre six cylinder engine, that found its way into early Jensen sports coupes as I recall.I didn't realise until I followed this up that Jensen was actually a UK car maker. I always imagined it was a Scandinavian car. How wrong I was - the original firm was started by someone called Smith.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jensen_Motors

I once had a ride in one which probably looked a bit like this. The distinctive feature was the wrap around rear window - though I thought it wrapped round even more than that. It was OK - but I'm not sure I'd say any more than that.

I think that with classic cars (or indeed most cars), what you like is heavily influenced on whether or not you're a DRIVER or simply an admirer...

In that respect, there are lots of vintage cars that I think 'look cool', but in reality won't be great to drive, simply because, in comparison with modern cars, they'll handle like a dog's dinner - and that'll only become obvious if you get behind the wheel...

Therefore, as a driver and also someone who, when the conditions are right, likes to take cars to their limits, what I like, when it comes to vintage cars, is not only dependent on looks/styling, but very importantly if I'm considering owning it, how the car in question will DRIVE and handle at SPEED, particularly going round corners, not just when puttering around in a straight line!;)

Marco
04-06-2020, 12:37
Not at all. It's not ALL about looks if you're a 'petrol head'! That's my point:)

There are some classic cars, which not only look great, but *for their age*, can still handle well round a track. Therefore, if I were in the market for buying such a car, it would have to pass the latter test as well as simply be 'a looker'.

After all, it's not an ornament - it's got to be FUN to drive, too!!

Yeah, I wonder what's disturbed your sleep pattern? You used to sleep pretty well?:hmm:

Maybe it's because you're not as tired working from home as you were actually going to work, which is likely - and if you're not as tired you won't need as much sleep.

I think that might be it. I'm sleeping well, usually 7 or 8 hours. But whereas I used to wake up between 0700 and 0730 it moved earlier to 0600 and now it's 0530.

Might go out for a walk later on. I've basically done zero exercise since the end of March. Problem is there's nowhere pleasant to go for a walk around here.

Marco
08-06-2020, 10:34
I think it defo is, mate. You're not tiring yourself out enough at the moment, either mentally or physically. The former is really only achieved by going out to work every day and dealing with an element of stress.

Going for a walk is definitely a great idea, especially if you can motivate yourself to doing so also near bedtime. Getting some fresh air into your lungs I've found in the past to be greatly beneficial in getting a good night's sleep. Also try and go to bed with a 'clear head', and don't be thinking of this, that or the next thing, or have you mind racing.

Put it all to one side and deal with it in the morning. Essentially when your head hits that pillow, you should be in a totally relaxed and calm mood, feeling nice and sleepy - then you should just drift off!

:)

I never have any bother going to sleep, never been one of life's worriers.

But when you wake up at 0530 and that's it, you're wide awake, there's not much you can do about it.

Marco
08-06-2020, 10:55
True, but in my experience, as someone who's always had no problem with sleeping, getting your 'head in the right zone' before bed is a BIG part in being able to get a good night's sleep. Too many folks fill the heads with all sorts of shite, and lie there, thinking about it, instead of putting it all to one side until the next day, shutting their eyes, and letting nature take its course!

That's presuming of course that you're in good health and don't have any physical issues preventing sleep in the first place.

I know, but with a bit of 'training' it can be done. Like me, Del has no problem with sleeping [we're both off for a good 8-9 hours], and I don't think that's just an accident or coincidence. Certainly, neither of us are stressed or have anything serious to worry about, so I guess that helps:)

I don't know but there's 13 of them and all 13 have sleep problems.

And how do you know all this? Don't tell me you listen to them yacking on about it? Tell them that 'Dr Martin' has a special cure for their insomnia, without the need for batteries, but it's home-trial only:D

It would be interesting to know though, what's causing their sleep issues, but I can tell you it's an increasing problem in the modern world, due to stress, and which is currently our biggest killer!

It's very important though, for encouraging sleep, to keep bedrooms at night a smartphone-free zone!!

Marco.

P.S with 13 of them, and seemingly not many blokes, are the office parties any good?;)

Macca
08-06-2020, 12:53
Yes, some of them do go on about it so I went around and asked all of them, and they all said they had trouble sleeping. Some said they do well to get four hours a night.

I don't usually go to the xmas party. Went last year though and it was okay, it was at a casino which helped. :) Plus it was only a couple of mile away so I had the option of sodding off and walking home when I got fed up of it without all the aggravation of getting a taxi.

So you took the trouble to go round and ask them all, but didn't find out WHY they were struggling to sleep?;)

If you start a job you should finish it, lol! I'd also have thought that when they were moaning about it, they'd have mentioned what was keeping them awake...

Casino for a Xmas party sounds cool. Got any guys you're friendly with at work? If not, I can imagine parties won't be much fun surrounded by women, unless you're in with a chance of some action...:eyebrows:

I avoid getting involved with women that I work with, that can turn out very badly. It's really not worth the aggravation and I'm speaking from experience.

Regarding the sleep thing, some do have health related pain issues that keep them awake. Most say that they cannot stop their minds turning, or that they are worrying about things.

A woman I used to work with said she went bed every night at 9.30, then woke up at 4am and couldn't get back to sleep. I don't know why she didn't try put off going to bed for a couple of hours and maybe waking up at a more reasonable time.

Yeah mate, tell me about it. I worked in a department store for nearly 8 years, and every fucker was at it like rabbits, even the store management!:D

It was just rampant... So yes, I had a few 'flings' with female members of staff, most of which didn't work out and became, shall we say, 'problematic', during working hours (as you correctly point out), but as you can imagine, it was simply impossible not to 'indulge', as it were, or you wouldn't have been human, especially as women outnumbered men by about 5-1!

Working overtime at night, doing 'stocktaking' with a nice wee girly from the same department [the uniforms were rather nice in those days, too), certainly helped 'pass the time'...;)

In terms of the sleep thing, "minds turning" is what they need to try and stop. Easier said than done, I know, but with discipline it can happen. You just need to develop a good/well-planned, regular 'sleep regime':)

When I was a kid, mum always got Hammond's Chop Sauce. It was great. If they still did it, I'd be all over it :)

No I have not been constipated, rather the complete opposite. Thursday I had an emergency dump at a customer's house, and emergency dumps by their very nature are never good. Fortunately there was no one living there, which was just as well as the was no door on the bogroom. Then yesterday I had two (2!) dumps before leaving the house. All day my intestines were like a pride of lions in a family feud, so for the first time in years I went to bed with zero supper. You'll be relieved to know that this morning normal plops were back so all's well that ends well :)

Well you did ask...

Woke up a few hours ago, but gave up the struggle about 5 am, and have been testing software since.
I ought to go out and do more exercise - I think it makes a difference, though doesn't completely cure this sleeplessness.

I spent some while testing out software on Catalina - and also trying to get LMMS - a kind of DAW to work.
Might report back on both of these later on - when I've done more testing, and maybe got them all to work.

Many years ago I sold an amp to a work colleague. It would be fair to say he had a face only a mother could love... Anyway, I took it round to his house, and there on the mantelpiece was a framed photo of him as a baby, and he looked exactly like Lee Marvin. You're probably wondering what the point to my story is, and I'm damned if I can remember.

Oh yeah that's it - winds me up that I can remember that photo like it was yesterday, but I can't remember important stuff, like where I was working yesterday :( Perhaps it's just that I need a 'trigger' word to bring these memories back - in this case it was the mention of a Lee Marvin film.

I don't think it helps that I seem to be down to about 5 hours sleep per night now - do I qualify for an off peak membership?

Not had one in a while but it is very bright and sunny this morning so I think that is what does it. They say it all happens in the few seconds before you wake up.

Shame it was a dream as I quite fancied the VHS camcorder. There were also some of the missing components to my 'Fisher' stack system which I was pleased about.

Just reduce your waste and be greener, simples. As a single guy, a full black bin should last you ages!;)

Honestly though, there's the two of us, and three cats-worth of used cat litter (in bags) to contend with, and we very rarely fill a black bin to its full point, so could easily cope with fortnightly collections. We just don't buy a lot of stuff with packaging on it, that's all. Same with our wheeled 'three-tier' recycler bin. The only thing that gets really full with is wine bottles!:eyebrows:

Oh and put your bin out the night before collection is due (like we do), and you'll miss hee--haw... It's called being organised!:ner:

I can get by with a once a month collection, especially since the neighbours moved out and I can use their bin too....

I hardly generate anything really. It's just the thought of all that stuff rotting in there, especially when the weather turns warm like today.

I did make a mental note to put the bin out last night, but thought I'd have my tea first and then I forgot. Usually I'd be up in time to put it out this morning but they came extra early.

struth

What did you do with the hamster?

I don't reckon you only dream just before you wake up, it's just that the pre-waking dream is the only one you remember. And after a couple of hours that one will also bugger off back to your subconscious.

Yeah that's what I meant. Sometimes you have a dream, wake up, have a drink of water, go back to sleep and go back into the same dream. A bit like when they used to have the interval in long films. So it's obviously going on all night, off and on.
