I durnt! I'm scurred!
One of the would-be exhibitors (Lurch) at last month's not-happening Kegworth show had kindly offered to have a look at it for me, but now that'll have to wait. So if I can find any instructions online in words of one syllable I might give it a go.
Robert (Robbiegong) never got back to me re. suitable discs to help evaluating :( Maybe I'm on some 'ignore' lists - there's a lot of it about, and the thing is you could go around being ignored for ages without knowing it  Just like Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense

Probably my imagination, but thick 180g pressings usually seem to sound a bit thicker and ponderous in the bass than thinner discs. Could that be a VTA thing?Very unlikely to be a VTA issue. The odd mm here or there isn't going to shift things much. It's probably something to do with resonances (or absence of them) in the disc and the interaction between the disc and the cartridge.
Small VTA adjustments might be done by a height adjustment, but I think otherwise some form of shims might be needed to adust the cartridge angle. Some arms/head shells may provide another way of doing this. I doubt that VTA adjustments are going to make a huge difference, unless things are way out of kilter.

I suppose I was just wondering whether a 180g record that is say, 2mm thicker than a 'regular' weight disc, would require the arm at the pillar end to be raised by 2mm to maintain the angle.
I bought my deck/arm/cart complete, with the set up done by the manufacturer. This 'plug 'n' play set up was important to me as I have two cloth ears, 10 sausage fingers, and zero confidence that I wouldn't just make things worse. I've no reason to think they did a crappy job, and I'm happy with the sound. I was just curious about VTA, as many say 2M blacks are notoriously fussy.
I suspect that my phono stage would be the weak link in my set up, and that's where my attention will be going next, soon as I can :)

Not in my experience, some cartridges are very touchy about the VTA settings, both my Benz Micros for example can go from sounding bright to bassy over a total height adjustment at the pillar end of the arm of just 1.5mm. I know this accurately as I used to have an easy-VTA adjuster on my Jelco which is a micrometer.
I believe that Steve(pigmy pony) has an Ortofon 2m black and from what others have said can be critical with respect to VTA set up.
I tend to use an old 140gm record to set up, as most of my collection are thes with some 120gm and a few 180gm. For my cartridges I have found that having the head shell base parallel to record surface gives best results, and is a good compromise with a thicker 180gm record.
I use one of these now to check the set up as I have a different arm https://www.amazon.co.uk/MJJEsports-Measuring-Tonearm-Cartridge-Alignment/dp/B07SR75Q2Z/ref=sr_1_23?crid=HGVHBHWIBCR0&dchild=1&keywords=tonearm+vta&qid=1587203011&sprefix=VTA+%2Caps%2C157&sr=8-23&swrs=249271ECC9B7554A47E9A90CFCE220B7
You place the Block on the record move the head shell up next to it and then lower the cartridge down onto the record, and the carefully look to see if the line are parallel with the top of cartridge/bottom of head shell edge, if not then put arm back on rest and adjust the rear up or down slightly and re-check. Once you think it is level have a listen and see if it sounds good, if is bright then the rear is too high, if bass then it is too low.
I hope this helps.

BUM it is with white lines, it is easier to see then and I shine a light from the side across the head shell and onto the BUM gauge, which helps seeing what is going on.
I have several records I use for VTA set up listening. An old Wishbone Ash "Live Dates" track A1 The King Will Come (a spare copy) for initial set up, you can hear when the top end is about right if the audience is clear at the start and the first few hits of the drums before the song sound crisp. Then I listen fo the clarity of the guitar for the first 30 seconds and then how well defined the bass is and the kick drum to see if they are clear and reasonably easy to differentiate.
If I want to be 100% on the true spot I will then use Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold, the two guitars should be clearly defined and midway through you should be able to hear harmonics from the electric guitar. Eva's vocal should sound clear with a beautiful tone, their should be minimal sibilance, but there is occasionally some.
The other real tester is Ravi Shankar – Portrait Of Genius, Label: Liberty – LBS 83 079 Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue Released: 1967/68, Mono:- this is an interesting album and extremely well recorded album, probably just mike up and then recorded with no overdubs. I actually find the instrument positioning is quite precise across the sound stage. Track A1 Tala Rasa Ranga is the one I mainly listen to for VTA. It has two tabla drums and if the VTA is right they should sound hollow and extended pulse on each deep hand hit, and you should be able to differentiate between the two, also a wood block is used and this should be very clear and precise, across it all is the sitar and this should be part of the mix occasionally coming to the fore, with lovely sitar drone. The flute when it come in should just float over the top and sound oh so smooth.
If Eva and Ravi sound perfect you have it right, if you find Eva has lots of sibilance then lower the rear of the arm just a touch, if you go to far you will loose the harmonic from the guitars. If the wood block on the Ravi track is not crisp and clear, then raise the rear slightly, the tablas if the do not sound rounded and extended and you cannot easily separate the two of them then the arm is down too much, so just raise it a touch.
When I first started this to listen to different cartridges and also with different head shells I found it quite tricky, however I now can swap between two cartridges quite easily and check the set up and get it right in 10-15 minutes, I now trust my ears knowing what it should sound like, in fact sometimes I just listen to the Wishbone Ash track and know whether it right or not. IMO opinion its is all about familiarity with how to to do it and how it sounds. I now have 3 cartridges and sometimes have to remount one as at the moment I only have 2 head shells, even then I can get it set up in 30-40 minutes.
My advise is the first time you do it just take your time and treat it as a fun learning exercise. Always raise and lower the arm with the arm lift and ensure you raise it and put it back on its rest securely before adjusting the height of the arm pillar. I cannot remember what arm you have but if it does not have a mechanism for VTA adjustment that stop the arm dropping make sure you lock the pillar lightly after adjusting it up/down to stop it moving before listening to a track again. Once you are happy with how it sounds make sure the pillar is securely locked but do not over tighten lock screws. Another though is if you have a second back up cartridge you could try it out with that first before you try setting up with the 2M Black.
I hope this helps out, you can use any tracks that you are familiar with that have easy to hear vocals, drums, bass and has detail like I have already described, then you will hear how the adjustment affects how it sounds.

I don't have any of the records you use, but I would probably try using "Wish You Were Here", which may just be the most familiar recording I have. it is a 180g jobbie, but it has a rather recessed treble and slow bass quality.

I've tried that, doesn't help that there's jack shit on the telly. And I live alone so always by myself anyway. The only human contact I get is at work and that's off the cards too at the moment.
By 0900 I've read pretty much every hi-fi site and news story. I was so bored yesterday I actually cleaned the front window. Which admittedly did need doing, must be ten years since I last did it. But that's not the point! I'm concerned that I will do more cleaning today. Already got the hoover out but not actually done anything with it yet. But it's only a matter of time.
There should be a sponser you can call like with AA - ''Dave? Yes it's Mart. I'm tempted mate. I'm tempted. Got a hoover right here in front of me.''

I feel for you mate - it's easy for us smug gits to complain about being stuck in together, but when your housemate is a TV talking shite most of the time, I can see how the hoover would start to look attractive. I would suggest hard drugs as a way to pass the time, but you don't want to risk your health by bringing something into the house that's been God-knows-where :(
If you can tell me where I can score hard drugs during lockdown I'm all ears. In fact soft drugs will do, I'm not fussy.

Get yourself a dog, then you can get up early to secretly exercise it without seeing others, and exercise it again at tea time. The getting has never been a problem, and I doubt the average dealer is too worried about social distancing. The problem is when a social stoner has no one to get trashed with :(
I've a couple of nice little projects to do outside, but I'm wary of spending money on the necessary materials as I won't have any income for at least another five weeks, and when (if) it comes I've no idea how much it will be. I've just splashed out 7 quid on a VTA gauge, and I feel bad about that.
Been up a couple of hours now, and I'm bored shitless. Still too early to play records, so I'm off outside with my kindle, 6 music on the Makita radio, and a posh coffee. Hopefully after a few chapters, the world will be ready for a bit of Crime of the Century played loud :)

Well not completely lazy, but after ten minutes or so they've had enough. Don't live very long though, which can be heartbreaking.

I told my wife about you cleaning your front window after 10 years, she took me by surprise she said “OMG what’s he doing, he will have upset the room sonics by removing the dust and dirt and now will have to replace all his hifi” [emoji23][emoji23]
Another good reason to get a bullmastiff - they're very nosey (like most dogs) and are constantly looking out of the window. A couple of weeks of mastiff snot 'n' drool, and the window's sonic properties will be restored :)

Shame you're not closer I've got a shipload of work you could have. No need for PC plod to find out. Or the Vatman for that matter ;)
VAT? What's that then? Actually I think this virus will pretty much spell the end for cash jobs. Maybe I'll start to get paid in cabbages and chicken eggs.

I have had an idea for you Martin, to help alleviate your boredom and have hours and hours of fun.
I now you have quite a selection of hifi, amps, CDPs, TT's(?), and of course speakers, so you could set yourself a little task of carefully checking that all the possible permutations are not better than you current set up.
1. Create a spreadsheet with a list of all components.
2. create a list of possible amp/speaker combinations
3. Start listen to each amp/speaker combination with some favourite well known tracks and score them out of 0 to 10, you can choose your criteria.
4. Having got to the favourite, go through each CDP and select best sounding
5. Repeat 4 with each different type of input, Tuner, TT, Digital feed etc.
Hours of fun!:eyebrows::D Plus you can tidy and dust as you go.
Once finished you can put the inferior stuff up for sale and then start on trying some new better kit.

Lol - you guys crack me up... Just up, after enjoying a lovely sleep (went to bed at 1am, after listening to some choons), and not bored at all!:ner::lol:
Time for a nice cappuccino, and then I'll decide what joys the rest of the day will hold!:gig:

I have over 30 cartridges in various different headshells. I also have 10 pickup arms, so there are at least a hundred combinations that could be tried. But am I going to try them all? No, of course not - I'm far to busy listening to music to 'faff' around with all that.
The nearest I'm getting to doing any comparisons, is changing the interconnects between the pre- and power amp every few week. I have about 15 to try out, and so far I have heard no real difference between the three already tried.

It’s 300 hundred head shell arm combos, and if you have more than one TT then it that number times 300 should keep you busy[emoji23]
Swapping interconnect wires is a bit of a tricky one, it is very amp dependant. So that will keep you even busier. [emoji33][emoji23]

Some arm/cartridge combinations will be mechanically incompatible, so the number of possible combinations will be less than 300.
Regarding the interconnects, I have four power amps fitted with RCA phono input connectors, the rest have balanced XLR inputs. Those fitted with RCA phonos are Quad 405s (variously modified), so essentially there is only one power amp to use.
But all of this is only a bit of fun - my usual set up is fully balanced from source to speakers, so after I have tried all the unbalanced interconnects, I'll be getting rid of most of them.
With that lot there clearly was a lot of faff in your history. Nice that you can now relax and enjoy the fruits of your labours :)
I've always been interested in the electromechanical transducers we call cartridges and with that, the pickup arms that carry them. I still like to 'tinker' with arms and cartridges: I have four TTs so I can continue to listen to music whilst I chop and change arms and cartridges.

Yeah it's times like this when you really envy sheep - at least they get out and about with their mates. Of course it's easy to forget what a shit job they have when the weather's bad. Grass is always greener on the other side, as any sheep able to speak English would tell you

I don't have any 'decent' pics to post... I'll see what I can do.. or would that spoil it?
Quite possibly - my mental picture sets the bar pretty high.
However my mental picture of Marco is based on the descriptions given by people who have met him. The real thing can only be an improvement :)

Bit harsh - if your balls also dragged along the ground, and the tarmac scraped all the hairs off, you wouldn't want the world to know about it :(
What in the name of Bonapart's balls do you mean?

Is this a good time to mention the vision I wake up with you in a sailor suit?
Marco.
You can't be serious about your hifi, you've got too much hair.
Even more than that now, might have to get the Wahls out for a number 2.

I get them waxed, the pain is delicious & it keeps them clean & tidy for teabagging :D

Always a good time as far as I'm concerned, but them we're as bad as each other :) Not surprised about the sailor suit bit - I heard you often wake up with seamen in your head (not sure I spelled that right) :eyebrows:

Timothy I see you have the Naim XS3... what's it like? I had an XS2 for a while before replacing it with a SN2... I liked the XS2 a lot
Sorry for the delay Bev. I really like it a lot, I would guess not much difference from the XS2 really, but it does have a nice MM phono stage built in now, which is nice, as I do spin vinyl every now and then. It still has the typical grippy character, yet seems to be more neutral than the older Naims, especially the Olive series. I really kind of like all of the Naims for various reasons, have had pieces of their kit since early 80's in one shape or another. Not the end all be all, but good, solid gear.
I bought it along with the newer ND5XS2 media streamer, as I was looking to replace my aged Uniti1. I kept looking at the newer Uniti series and almost bought a Star, but in the end, I just didn't want to put that much crazy money into an all-in-one again, although it did sound really good. My dealer gave me a great deal on the combo, and it came in much cheaper than the Star to boot, and now as technology changes in the digital world, I just have to update the streamer, not the amplifier. Made more sense to me. I kept my Uniti1 though, will put it to use in the bedroom, it still sounds really great, just not upgradeable anymore, the platform is old tech.
Have only had it a bit over two months now, enjoying it a lot. Seems to work with most any speaker I have, so no complaints! I take it your still really pleased with your ML/Maggies?

Yes I did some extra stuff yesterday which I shouldn’t but had no choice as Sue is in hospital, she had her big operation on Monday, it went well and she is recovering, hopefully she will be home tomorrow, will need 6-8 weeks to get over it.
The extra stuff I did brought on the angina quite bad last night which is why I was awake for over hour.

Thanks Marco, Al, Steve and everybody who has sent good wishes.
Sue came home this morning and is obviously pretty sore. She should have came home yesterday afternoon but they could not remove one of the small tube in her tummy, 3 nurses and 3 drs had a go but it would binge and was pulling inside and hurting Sue. So they left it to this morning and the consultant put a fine needle down it and managed to straighten it and then remove it, he gave her a load of local anaesthetic before. He showed Sue the tube and it had got kinked inside her stopping it coming out. Anyway she’s home and 6-8 weeks recovery.

Thanks Barry, Sue is happy she is out of hospital, a difficult worrying time to go in, but she said they were obviously being very careful with cleanliness and covid precautions. Once the pain and bruising subsides I am sure Sue will be back to her usual self.

Thanks guys, Sue is doing well considering, but as to be expected lots of pain as result of the operation, so popping a cocktail of painkillers and lots of rest. I am hoping she will start feeling better at the weekend.

Been awake since 6am, showered walked Harry and Sue in the local woods(not a 250 mile trip to get there), feed the dog, made breakfast, sitting down with a coffee and saying hello to Al.[emoji41]
I now have no neighbours so was up until gone midnight playing loud rock and roll music and having a skinful. Still wide awake and up at 0830. I don't understand it.
