Dishwasher tabs from Lidl (or Aldi, or maybe both) were Which? magazine's "Best Buy" - just as good as the best of the rest, but WAY cheaper :)

The last box I purchased were Magnum 100 in a box , never had any unclean dishes , However I could not sleep so went shopping at 4.30 am before the minion rush and purchared some in Tesco's £10 for 80 , rip off , will buy another box next time I frequent Lidl :)

I slept straight through from midnight to 7.10am when I got up.

Not quite 'a third of the price' then?

But still a good deal cheaper. Someone gave me a voucher for £10 off if you spend £40 in Lidls so I'll give them a try.

I might do if they delivered. I do get the odd item in there (I can walk to my local Lidls, usually pass the place a couple of times a day) but don't find it cheaper across the board plus they waste a lot of space with their centre aisle products so can't carry the same range of products as the others.

Go for it, Roy. We do around 80% of our shopping there, and you know me when it comes to quality food and drink! Just don't expect to see the usual big brands, and be willing to experiment with their equivalents.

Things to look out for:

*Anything* of German origin, food or drink, especially Pils lagers. Italian or French wine, especially from the 'wooden crates' nearest the checkouts (stuff over £6 a bottle).

Their fresh produce (fruit, veg, free-range chickens and meat), *if* the suppliers they use near you are good.

*Anything* from their Deluxe food range, fresh or frozen.

*Anything* from their Italiamo Italian food range. *Anything* from their French-week promotions.

Chocolate, especially that from Ritter Sport.

The many interesting tools and gadgets, stored in their 'middle isles'.

Things to avoid:

ALL ready-meals, as they are truly cack!

Brown sauce or English mustard.

Some of their most basic cheaper brands (of anything).

Can't really think of much else!:)

Marco.

It simply depends on what you buy.

We buy LOADS of fresh fruit and veg, primarily because Del is veggie, but also because I love veg and we both eat lots of fruit. And if we buy the same stuff in the likes of Sainsbury's, it's considerably more expensive, especially more 'speciality' items such as celeriac, purple-sprouting broccoli, asparagus, fennel, spinach, etc, and nice varieties of apples, strawberries, various berries, etc, when they're in season, and also fresh herbs (such as basil), which we can't grow in our garden.

Fresh meat is also much cheaper in Lidl, especially the likes of Aberdeen Angus steaks, and lamb, and especially free-range chickens (as we don't buy battery-reared cack), and the quality is just as good as that found in the likes of Asda, Tesco or Sainsbury's. I could go on, but it as I said it largely depends on your shopping habits and how much you reply on big brands:cool:

Marco.

There sauces ain't great. Aldi's brown is edible. There tomato is just about edible.
Stokes stuff is best but expensive, so if on budget you need to use a cheaper one. Heinz is OK too. Especially the low sugar one

Well I'll certainly make use of this voucher to do my 'big shop', this will enable me to check the prices of the products against my usual weekly online Asda shop.

I just find getting my groceries delivered so convenient, preferable to having to actually go to the supermarket (more so now the weather's got cold), jostle for position with people trying to park their massive SUVs in the car park, mess about getting a trolley (I've never got a pound), spend an hour looking for that one product they've moved (usually due to seasonal aisles) then queue up behind the lovely old dear who's paying for her shopping with her penny collection. Oh and remember to take carrier bags.

Lol...! Just shows how different we are:D

Aren't you retired mate, and so can go to supermarkets at the quietest times, thus avoiding the majority of the 'great unwashed'? That's what I do. I usually go when Del's at work, and certainly around here, Lidl is near-empty at the likes of 10.30am on a Tuesday morning.

I always keep a Pound coin in the glove compartment of the car, for trolleys. Not difficult... Similarly, carrier bags are kept in the boot. It's called being organised!;)

I get the "convenience" of having stuff delivered, but as long as I remain able-bodied, I'll be doing all my shopping, physically, in store. Plus, I like to 'mooch around' and see what interesting things there are, for spur of the moment purchases, which is pretty much how I shop - just buying stuff that takes my fancy there and then, which you can't really do online.

I only make lists for basic essentials:cool:

Our local bus services are outstanding, one passes my front door usually every seven minutes going into Romford & if my phone app tells me there isn't one due I've got 4 other services I can use within very easy walking distance. Quality, mate. I believe that our local bus service is also very good, but have no cause to use it. It's much more car-friendly round here than it is where you are [no issues with parking whatsoever], so that's my preferred mode of transport, as like to come and go as I please:)

Re the dishwasher tabs, both Aldi and Lidl ones are good, even better when on offer. The all in one ones are better, but the bog standard "classic" ones are good enough for everyday stuff.

Sometimes Lidl has the rather better Fairy ones cheaper. I got a bag of 84 for £9.99 the other day. I know that's more than the Lidl/Aldi ones, but glasses do come out shinier, and the water tends to drain off things better, giving a quicker dryer result. I think the best ones are the Fairy Platinum ones, but they're a bit pricier. We mix them up - use the cheappies from Lidl/Aldi, but have occasional bursts with the Fairy ones to keep things smart, particularly with glassware. A mixed strategy keeps our average costs low, but gives better overall results.

You've more or less confirmed what I thought, the Lidl/Aldi tabs aren't as good as the Fairy ones (which I use at the moment).

I've found, in general, that the 'liquid' tabs are better than the 'powder' ones (like Finish)

The "free" one - if you can afford London council taxes, is the Freedom Pass.

https://www.londoncouncils.gov.uk/services/freedom-pass

A friend of mine costed that in when he moved to a location very close to the London boundary. Was it worth having a house very slightly closer to the centre or not? We're only talking about a few hundred yards or so. Decided it was better to pay less council tax and pay for the trains and buses.

There's no great cost differential comparing the council tax rates for the outer London borough I live in with neighbouring Essex councils. In most cases they're only a few quid different and you can actually pay slightly more if you live in parts of rural Essex.

Don't know whether I'll get to Lidls today, still got this cold & it's a stinker. Had a small delivery from Asda this morning just in case I don't go out (ordered at 10 to midnight last night on my doorstep at 9:40 :) ) so thought I'd do a quick price comparison using Lidl prices from the 'mysupermarket' website (where I could find equivalent products).

Premium French Lager (20 x 250ml) - Asda - £6.25, Lidl - £6.58 (2 x 10 packs + I like the Asda one, never tried Lidl's 'Argus')

Fresh whole chicken - Asda - £2.24, Lidl (equivalent by weight) - £2.26

Merlot - Asda (x 3) - £11.67, Lidl - £12.75

Pinot Grigio - Asda (x 2) - £7.78, Lidl - £7.38

Cumberland Pork Chipolatas - Asda (x 2) - £4.00. Lidl - £2.90 (on offer but still cheaper if not)

4 frozen quarter pounders - Asda - £2.00, Lidl - £1.89

6 sliced rolls - Asda - £0.56, Lidl - £0.69

Pickled Gherkins - Asda (820g jar) - £1.25, Lidl (equivalent by weight, they have smaller jars) - £1.75

Totals - Asda - £35.75, Lidl - £36.20

So, not a lot in it.

It's fantastic (lovely marbling for tenderness and flavour), and every bit as good as you'll get from most butchers. You can get cuts of sirloin and fillet, too. Think the piece I had recently was around £3.50. Stuff like that is much dearer in Sainsbury's.

Here they sell Aberdeen Angus steaks/meat, too (such as the burgers I posted a pic of the other day), and which is arguably even better. As I said, *anything* in Lidl's 'Deluxe' range is top-notch.

oddly im having ribeye for my lunch... in fact just about to start, although I got it in Tesco

Cool stuff, but you said the meat was crap in Lidl, have you tried the stuff in their Deluxe range, such as I posted? If not, then you need to!:)

Does look good, maybe a touch too much 'marbling' for my taste. I prefer sirloin...

Sure yeah, but that's generally how good ribeye is, plus of course you can pick different cuts with less gristle and/or marbling when you're in the store. I also like sirloin. Like I said Roy, rump, sirloin, ribeye and fillet are all available from Lidl's Deluxe range. I can vouch for the quality of the sirloin:)

Btw, the 30-day aged thing makes a significant difference to the flavour, plus also normally the cost! You try buying 30-day matured ribeye or sirloin steaks in Waitrose, and you're talking near the £6 mark, for something that isn't any better than LIdl's! *That* is where the bigger savings are: on quality items.

Hey, I should be on commission!!:D

I've made space in my freezer for when I go later, I need to spend £40 to get the tenner off, you are allowed two alcoholic products but I thought I'd spend the rest on fresh meat, need a nice pork loin joint for Xmas + I'll check out their Gammon joints.

Cool stuff. Next time though, try the Deluxe steaks (ribeye, sirloin or whatever0, and then see what you think of the meat from Lidl:)

Experience tells me now, having been shopping regularly at both Lidl and Aldi for years, is that to experience their products at their best, you have to go for their 'speciality' ranges, which is always much less expensive than the equivalent from other supermarkets (Tesco Finest, Sainsbury's Taste the Difference, etc).

If you don't, and just buy their ordinary or budget stuff, it's not really that good, and that also applies to their wines. What they sell in the main section at around £6 a bottle or under, is pretty average, *but* if you go for the stuff (in Lidl) in the wooden crates, near the checkouts, at around £8 a bottle, it's the equivalent of wines costing £10-12 elsewhere.

Those, including their fresh veg, are where the main savings are!

No worries. I don't have steak that often either, as I'm not a big red-meat/beef guy. I prefer chicken and pork, or duck and lamb.

I eat a lot of chicken, and we buy whole ones, using *every* bit of them, with the carcass, giblets, etc, turned into stock - nothing is wasted - and we always go for free-range (for animal welfare and also flavour reasons), so if you compare the price of free-range chickens from Tesco, Sainsbury's and Lidl, by following the links below, you'll see where the savings are:

Tesco: https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/276054144

Sainsbury's: https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/all-christmas/sainsburys-british-free-range-whole-chicken--taste-the-difference-900g---22kg

Lidl: https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/deluxe/deluxe-free-range-chicken/p15408

Then look at Waitrose: https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/no1-corn-fed-free-range-whole-chicken/037011-18529-18530

Just for the sake of completeness Asda free range chicken is £3.50 a kilo also the Tescos & Waitrose chickens are corn fed so perhaps not a fair comparison in those instances?

Marco
14-11-2019, 17:20
Sure, but IME corn-fed free range chickens don't *necessarily* taste any better than non-corn fed free-range. It just makes the skin yellow. Tends to be more of a marketing exercise, allowing shops to charge much more. What matters most is the quality of the bird itself, how its been reared, etc.

Anyway, you can see where I'm coming from, and why we do a lot of our food shopping at Lidl:)

Lol, I know. Just sayin':)

As I pointed out, in terms of our discussion about Lidl versus other supermarkets, etc, the saving we make on whole free-range chickens alone (as we go through around 3 per month) is one of the reasons we use Lidl. We save considerably more though on fresh fruit and veg!

Fake tan... Lol!:D

Indeed. It's bollox, although what you feed chickens with (much like any animal) *does* make a difference to their flavour when eaten. It's just that with supermarket chickens, I'm not sure exactly how much corn the 'corn-fed' ones are actually fed with, in order to make a real difference. It's just a way of them justifiably hiking up the price.

What makes the biggest difference to the flavour, is chickens being allowed to roam around freely and develop some muscle, which battery-farmed ones don't, and so are fattier, plus also pumped with water, to make them look artificially, but attractively 'plump'.

Good free-range chickens are leaner (seem 'scrawnier', but only because they have much less fat), and the leg meat in particular is darker and has much more flavour, which in turn makes better stock and a tastier gravy! So much chicken these days just tastes like cardboard, and very bland, unless it's covered in a sauce. That's why seeking out good free-range varieties can make such a difference, as it *actually* tastes like proper chicken!!:)

That's the main reason why I *only* ever eat free-range stuff, so I can sleep with a clear conscience!

The problem is WE (the human race) are our planet's biggest problem/threat, in all sorts of ways, one of which is the detrimental effect of our greed on animals - and our incessant desire for always paying the lowest price for our food, regardless of the consequences!

Best not get me started on that....

I'd rather eat chicken occasionally and that said animal had a life first. Same goes with fish.

We’ve just discovered the farm shop in our village and I made the decision to buy our whole chickens from there for the future - they’re bred and slaughtered on the farm, so assuming I walk to there that’s zero food miles, and a factor we don’t often think about with our food consumption. Mind you, at £14 a pop, I’m surprised the little buggers didn’t get there in a chauffeured limousine!

Good post, mate. I completely concur, and the bit in bold is so true. It was a luxury item even when I was a kid, so was something that you really looked forward to having. Plus, in those days 'free range' was more the norm, or at least chickens were treated much better/were less mass-bred than they are now.

Had a couple of the hog roast sausage rolls, very tasty.

Only beef I had (apart from the bloke who picked up one of my carrier bags to use) was that there were only self service counters open &, apart from putting people out of work, they're a nightmare when you've got reduced items, booze (age confirmation) & vouchers (& they get angry if you don't give their bagging area due attention). Felt sorry for the poor sod who was trying to help everyone in between restocking shelves.

12 inches solid is my record (turd, not willy, get your mind out of the gutter.) It was on the ferry back from Bilbau. My body ridding itself of the last vestiges of Spain I think. I asked Mrs. P to come see, and take a photo as it appeared to have a face, but she refused. Said I was disgusting.

It probably wasn't that big, if she used your cock as a guide, which pretty much anything would look big against!:D

It's impossible to measure the length of my 'droppings', as they're usually big curlers, so wrap around themselves like a walnut whip, and if you try and straighten them out, they just snap:(

Do you find that the softer your turds are, the more they tend to pong? Nice big, solid 'beef olives' tend to slip out rather effortlessly, with minimal 'fragrance', whereas when you pop out the chocolate version of a "Mr Whippy', it stinks out the room!:eyebrows:

I had one of those horrible nights last night where I kept having very realistic and slightly scary dreams, half-waking up, then drifting back into yet another dream. No, had had a nice day out visiting a National Trust place, didn't eat anything odd, had one large glass of wine, listened to some music, went to bed at our usual time (11.30-ish), fell asleep straightaway (as usual), then the scary dreams started. We fitted some blinds recently, which make the bedroom much darker, but that was a few weeks back and I've slept well until last night.

tis called fluid retention. the flesh absorbs it.. like your arms and legs, ankles especially swell.. The tabs i take help to remove it, but it only comes in small batches as my bladder is buggered and not very elastic. about 100ml a time.

I’m obviously a latecomer. Woke up with aching legs. I think I did some exercises which didn’t help - at least in this respect - a day or two back. Might find some ibuprofen and go back to bed, though now I’m up (emptied the dishwasher) things aren’t so bad. Watched some YouTube tutorials on MuseComp, as I’m trying to prepare some sheet music for a group. Might even use MuseComp to write some music - there’s some amazing stuff there. Look for Cole Porter, Benny Goodman or even Stravinksy’s Rite of Spring. The music doesn’t really sound great on the synthesisers, but it’s amazing that it works at all. If anyone’s into creative music making, give MuseComp a try out.

Not so early today. Probably around 6.30 am when I woke up. I do wonder if LED lights have an effect. I don’t like sleeping in a completely dark room, but I don’t do that often. I have noticed though that even some very small LED lights can light up the ceiling, and maybe it makes sense to turn off almost everything, or cover the lights up. Blue lights are generally supposed to be a bad thing, but I think white (which contains blue elements) may not be much better. Many gadgets come with lights these days, so try to keep their light pollution to a minimum, particularly in a room for sleeping.

That’s a strange article.
First of all they quote 2 expert researchers/psychologists on just how important sleep is.
Then they throw out a random example of how we’re all addicted to apps and fitbits to measure sleep when we don’t need to.

All I know is that if I don’t get enough sleep, and I often don’t, I’m fatigued for the rest of the day. Then I sleep for too long if I can get a nap and the whole thing gets worse.

Now.. Valerian root (tea) tastes disgusting. But if I have it at bedtime it really knocks me out. And often have vivid dreams. Which is quite cool, cos I usually don’t.
Added to which having had a good nights sleep, I feel much better the following day.

Which is what the researchers quoted in the first part of that article do actually say. - something to do with the removal of neurotoxic waste.

Interesting - but don't overdo the valerian. There seem to be many warnings about it in this article - https://www.drugs.com/mtm/valerian-root.html
Is that over-reacting? I don't know.

Once or twice in the past I had disgusting colds and could hardly breathe. I found that if I had cough medicine PLUS vodka that I went to sleep and felt better. I did this at first without thinking, but then read the instructions. Seems that what I did was a complete No-No, and I shouldn't have done that.

However, when I felt the same some while later, I repeated the "experiment" with the same effects. I would probably do so again, if I felt it might work. I would however have to feel pretty bad in the first place, and perhaps I'd ask someone else to keep an eye on me in case things got even worse. Though when I "discovered" this the first time I was actually on my own - looking after myself.

SteveW

Lol - I must be the only one then who always reads them - especially when it could affect my health! Luckily, the only tablets I take is (very occasionally) paracetamol, for the odd headache, which I get if I go too long without eating or drinking and become dehydrated.

The side effects described on medications are usually a 'catch all' and generally (but not always) read similarly regardless of which type, presumably for liability reasons.

I occasionally use Tesco 'Sleep Aid', which contains Valerion and find no side effects apart from slight drowsiness after waking in the morning.
