But the heat from his prick
Turned the clay into brick
And wore all his foreskin away.

I have rigged up a little headphone system for just such occasions. This consists of a Marantz CDP/Int amp and a vintage Sony turntable. Positioned conveniently alongside an old beat up settee in me cave it is nocturnal heaven whilst my good lady sleeps blissfully unaware. Got to admit i rarely eat during the night and a cup of Yorkshire is my hardest tipple. Although i find it frustrating not being able to sleep i actually enjoy these dark aural/audio events.

If you're anything like Anita, it's hard to not do "too much". The feeling of idleness brings its own stresses. People will say "You need to slow down, take it easy", but for folk who are used to keeping busy that's easier said than done. That old work ethic thing.

She will have an unnecessarily busy day, then she's wiped out for a couple of days. I'd help more, but apparently I'm "not doing it right" :( She quite often does tasks in the wee small hours when she can't sleep, and there's no way I'm helping with that one :nono:

Yes it’s a bit of a roller coaster, not nice for anyone with a heart condition, I’m trying to level it out as much as possible as I am returning to work on reduced hours, but it’s not going too well, a coupe of days and then I’m screwed. I may need to re-think things.

What is it you do Adrian, isn't it something to do with IT, or am I getting you mixed up with someone else? Can the work not come to you? In manageable portions?

AJSki2fly
24-10-2019, 20:00
Yes it is IT, I spent 15 years contracting all over the place in project lead, program management, test and implementation roles, some very large and stressful projects, and living out of a suitcase I think took its toll. How I stayed under 12 stone I think was purely due to the stress. I bailed out for a few years in my late 40’s and by accident ended up in a tech support role for the fruity manufacturer. Only part time but like all IT and other jobs today, everyone want twice as mutch out of you as is normal to achieve in an 8 hour day and all with a smile.

I would love to work from home, probably need to put some effort into doing it.

Me too, although I'm still the type who when his head hits the pillow, is out for the count until morning. Del though, is always snuggled in beside (or cuddling) me when I'm sleeping, so I very rarely sleep alone - only when we're not together. I can never fathom why some married couples sleep in separate beds...

That's not a healthy or close relationship, and would be a complete anathema to us!

I disagree about it really being "better", providing that both of you are close and in good health.

Otherwise, certainly in your situation, or others like it, I can understand why it could be better sleeping apart. However, Del and I have always been very close, even after nearly 30 years of marriage, and touch wood have no health issues, so always hate it when we're apart, sleeping or otherwise.

The only time we sleep in separate beds is when either of us have the cold (or flu), and don't want the other to catch it, which surprisingly can be rather effective!:)

My spare room is full of overspill. Must get it cleared. Becoming embarrassing againOuch - but isn't that what spare rooms, lofts and garages are for?

I get slightly irritated when we have visitors and things have to be moved around!

The "usual" major annoyance is when we have visitors for an afternoon or evening, and "stuff" has to be moved in order to present a tidy appearance. Usually goes in the spare room. It gets worse if people are invited to stay overnight - then where is the stuff going to go?

Perhaps it's just me, though.

Not just you no, but you are part of the problem - when your visitors leave, Mrs. Visitor is asking her other half "Why can't our house be nice and tidy like Dave's, instead of being littered with all your crap?" To which Mr. Visitor replies, "Well when they visit us, I'll just put it all in the spare room, job done. After all that's what spare rooms are for". And so it goes on.

Time to 'own' our crap, and say "This is us, this is how we live :) have you come to see us or are you just browsing?"

Most of our visitors know when to leave. For the rest there's always my Frank Zappa records :)

Marco
26-10-2019, 14:55
We rarely have 'visitors'; we have friends or family round, and they simply 'take us as they find us'. However, I like to keep the house tidy (and maintain it that way), so things never really get super-messy. Fortunately we have a large garage and summerhouse, plus an attic area, to keep all our 'shite' in.

But yes, I totally agree with Piggurs here:

Time to 'own' our crap, and say "This is us, this is how we live have you come to see us or are you just browsing?"

We wouldn't let anyone in our house that a) we didn't like, and b) who we felt were there to 'judge' us. Life's too short to share the company of arseholes. Why would you?? So we don't have 'visitors', we have guests, and who are welcome to stay for as long as they like - and frequently do!

Yup, they're too soft and floury... different thing. The real ones must also be 'well fired', so you get a nicely 'toasted' outer... You can only get proper morning rolls in Scotland.

I've mentioned this before, but another type of bread I've only seen for sale in Scotland, and great for making bacon or egg butties, is the classic Scottish Plain:

Now *that* has a proper crust and actually TASTES of something!! :)

Lol - so is pretty much anything, not to mention the bacon and/or fried egg that goes with it!:D

Moderation, my boy.... But yes, it's great for butties, and knocks that soft, tasteless shit we were discussing before into a cocked hat!

aye but living alone a loaf either needs eaten or it goes off quick, like most things when single its logistics as much as anything with food. I dont eat huge quantities so it either becomes repetitive or waste. Even when I had a freezer, many things dont taste great after freezing.
Life was much easier when there were more mouths to feed

Marco
29-10-2019, 09:53
Yeah, sure, I get that. You defo have to make adjustments when living on your own. I was just making a point though that Scottish plain bread is great for making sarnies, which we both agree on:)

Aside from anything else though, for me, bread is the same as anything else, I'll only eat it if it's GOOD. A good sandwich *starts* with the bread, and which should be more than simply a 'carrier' for the filling!

A perfect example of a Scottish morning roll, and indeed also a bacon roll (note the difference in the texture of the outer, nice and crisp/firm/well-fired, and with a light/airy inner, compared with softer, stodgier 'English' rolls):

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/KvYkmN.jpg

Perfect!!

Here's an article on the history of morning rolls, and what makes them unique, for those interested, plus a recipe for making them (also featured is the iconic Scottish square/Lorne sausage, which knocks 'links' into a cocked hat, and perfect with a buttered morning roll and some brown sauce!): https://foodanddrink.scotsman.com/food/the-history-of-glasgow-morning-rolls-including-a-recipe-for-making-your-own/

Lorne sausage is always present in my Scottish cooked breakfast, and very tasty it is too, but I can only eat so much of it - saltier than a post star-jumps Marco ball bag, and that can't be good for you :(

Also nice is white pudding, which we get from a little butcher's shop in Ayr whenever we visit, to bring home :)

All this food chat (even the salty ball bag sausage) will be making the insomniacs hungry, hopefully they won't fall asleep with the chip pan on

I’m back here after 8 hours yesterday at hospital having my heart prodded about internally in my heart with wires/tubes to find my issues. They have found the main cause next a CAT scan to see what can be done, if anything. So now as warned I am feeling a bit uncomfortable and sore arm from the angiogram. Oh well it’s progress I suppose. [emoji51]

Cheers Grant, my long term prognosis heart wise is good, or that is what I have been told, as all the other work done is still good. The main issue is that as one bypass may have failed I may have to face continuous uncomfortable Angina, not the end of the world just unpleasant and disruptive. Also the drugs to control it are not that nice.

Marco.I read somewhere a few years ago that socks in bed would be a good idea, and give better sleep. I did it for a year or so, but over this summer I gradually gave up - not much point in the heat. Now it's getting colder I thought I'd try it again, and it seems to work.

If you put clean ones on at night, there's no need to change again in the morning, so saves on washing!

Marco

We have two different duck-down duvets, a winter weight one and a summer one (just different tog values). We're currently just changing over now to the winter one, which is super-toasty but light, and with that on the bed, there's no need for anything else, save when it goes below zero and we'll pop on the electric blanket:)

If you put clean ones on at night, there's no need to change again in the morning, so saves on washing! No, I don't keep putting new socks on over old each night.

The difference is that the worn socks come off in the evening, then the clean "new" ones go on before bed, and may stay on next day too. Is that so bad?
I'm trying to keep the amount of washing down, without actually being unhygienic. We seem to have enough washing to do that measures to minimise that are helpful. Not reduced to making everything last a week, or wearing underpants inside out as well to get a few more days. :steam::mental:

Another technique is to have socks specifically for bed, but use them for a couple of nights.

We can laugh, but in all seriousness, daftee, have you sought help to find out what your problem is with sleeping? Trust me, your health will suffer and you'll drastically reduce your life expectancy if this keeps up, as your body isn't getting enough time to 'recharge', so you could be at risk from heart disease, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes.

Are you anxious or stressed? What do you think is the reason for your sleeping problems?

See here: https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/sleep-problems/#.XcPdfJL7TOQ

Btw, that applies to everyone else here who is similarly suffering, but may not know why and/or wish to do something about it. It's all very well us laughing about this, and as you know I'm always up for a giggle, but if you're only getting 3-4 hours of sleep every night, or less, it's a serious problem - snd one which needs addressing.

Marco.

Yes Marco, you are quite correct, sleep deprivation and/or irregular sleep patterns and disturbed sleep has a very detrimental impact on you mental and physical well being. I know since my medical issues over the past 3 years that if I get a good 7-8 hours sleep then the following day is usually reasonably good. However if not then my heart issue definitely get worse and I fatigue much quicker. If I wake up I do everything I can to return to sleep ASAP, I usually get a decaf tea, sit in bed for 10-15 mins relaxing and trying to clear my mind, then even if I do not think I can sleep I lay down and close my eyes, usually I am back to sleep within an hour or so.

I think Al's issue may be derided from odd work shifts, if I remember rightly? A neighbour I am friends with is nearly 60 and is a Highly Qualified Paramedic on Ambulances and has been so for nearly 18 years. He has recently gone to part time with no more than two 12 hour shifts every 9-10 days. He said he had to as he realised he was becoming ill and could no longer cope with the irregular shift patterns and have to switch from days to night within 24 hours. He said it was affecting his mood, ability to make important decisions, and physical health, he lost 2 stone in 3 months for no reason other than stress, and he looked unwell.

Absolutely, but my point is, for the sake of his health, it can't go on. He needs to do something about it, seek professional help and/or change his lifestyle, or whatever, or he'll suffer the consequences, especially more as he gets older.

Sorry for putting a downer on this thread - I'm usually the last person to do that - but I can't help feeling concerned for people I care about, and that applies to all our regulars here especially. It worries me that the sleep deprivation folks here report regularly could be a sign of some form of mental health problem, such as anxiety or depression, and if not addressed could lead to more serious health issues in future.

Honestly guys, get yourselves checked out.

Marco.

Yup, and my posts therefore weren't aimed at you or anyone else with a diagnosed (physical or otherwise) medical condition that prevents them from sleeping properly. They were aimed at folks, such as Al, who to the best of my knowledge has no such issues, but may have other underlying problems that he's unaware of, perhaps relating to mental health (stress, anxiety/low-esteem or depression related).

I'm a great believer in (outside of suffering from any known mental or physical conditions), if you have a 'happy head' [due to being content with life, having no real worries or stress], that you tend to sleep well, and which reflects in your daily overall mood and well-being. It's certainly one of the reasons why I regularly sleep at night for nine hours or more, completely undisturbed, as I feel contented and have a 'happy head'.

However, if you're going to bed stressed, wound up, worried or anxious about stuff (disgruntled with life), thus have an 'unhappy head', that's bound to affect your ability to sleep... Common sense dictates so - and if that's the case then something needs done about it...

Also, a very simple thing, to try and get a good sleep, is to ensure that your bedroom (and bed) is warm and comfortable - and indeed that the whole environment befits being somewhere to relax and encourage sleep. In that respect the room should, at all times of the year, stay dark when curtains or blinds are closed until a reasonable time in the morning when you get up. It's no use, during the summer months is your bedroom is bright as soon as the sun is up! That's bound to make you wake up.

Plus, how tidy or inviting is your bedroom to sleep in? I've seen folks trying to sleep in some right pigsties, as so often these days people use their bedrooms as dumping grounds, with a small 'path' cleared from crap, in order to access the bed!

Quite simply, your bedroom won't be a comfortable or inviting place to sleep if it's cold, dirty (in which case air-quality will be poor, which won't help) and/or full of junk, so if that's the case and you're someone with sleep issues, a positive step would be to turn your bedroom into an oasis of calmness and tranquility [and that means making it a smartphone-free zone!], by freeing it from junk and rubbish, and creating somewhere warm, clean and cosy, where you can look forward to going to sleep at night.

Do your best to have a 'happy head':)

No doubt stress is the biggest killer of our age. But there can be other, as you say, reasons for it too. Mine is ive a bladder the size of a walnut:eyebrows:
I retire most nights at about 6pm. not to sleep although that sometimes happens, but to rest up. Pain overcomes you most days, when your mobility is compromised and every movement is painful.(psychologically as well as physically)
Last evening after a rest I got up again and wrote out my 100 films.. I forgot to go through my blurays so a few to add to it

Definitely, and some perhaps currently unconsidered by those suffering from sleep problems. Stress, as you say though, is a biggie. Plus, the inability to 'switch off' at night before going to sleep. If you've got umpteen things going through your mind, plus other external distractions, it's very difficult to switch off.

I've always been lucky that way and can sleep at the drop of a hat, in private or in public [in cars, buses, planes, trains, boats, etc] and even once standing up in church, during a particularly long mass (during Lent). I kid you not!:D

No, as the ads say now in Odeon cinemas - when you go to bed, you need to RELAX AND FREE YOUR MIND, emptying it of all the 'day's shite', deal with that tomorrow, and just concentrate on sleeping!

Marco.

I do agree I was just trying to give an example I where someone realised they had a serious issues developing due to lack of sleep and poor sleep patterns and did something about it. However that is not always a simple thing to achieve.

Nope, I agree. I cared for my wife for 20 odd years, 24/7. I was woken several times a night to help her etc. it does screw with your mind and body

Update for Marco

I drive a HGV as a profession must be getting on for 30 years now , A Standard shift is 12 hours sometimes more , not often less , This involves lots of sitting behind the wheel and not a lot of exercise ,
This is done at night as its less stressful , ( I dont allow stress into my life ) all the fuckwhits are in bed dreaming of the next days havoc they will cause when they inflict themselves on the public in their pocket rocket cars ,
Re sleep I sleep when my body tells me I need sleep , I don't go to bed for a strick shift of 10 hours as my body clock is not interested . I sometimes work like a mobile phone , Battery nearly flat , Jump in the bunk in the cab and when on my legal rest period with the night heater on have a 1 hours sleep , phone alarm goes off and I am good to go .
I dont think I should seek medical help as this is my life ( for 30 odd years ) and have had no medical issues , I can imagine me in the doctors saying " Some forum members think I don't sleep enough and have told me I need help , Go see the dock "

30 years and I am still here , under 2 years till I retire , I can fall asleep in the armchair then :) fart burb and dribble etc

Thanks for the concern though chaps ;)

So when do you find time for hi-fi and music? Do you actually get days off and holidays - doesn't that screw up your body clock?

I'd hoped not to be back here again at 4.45am. Slept quite well until after 4am (later than sometimes), then woke up. Now seem to have a cold, so got up to have a Lemsip, and try to dry the runny nose out.

I guess I'll put the headphones on and listen to music for a while, then go back to bed about 6 am.

Without the headphones on I can listen out for mice - I think there are still one or two lurking.

I have recently dropped a shift work wise I now work 4 nights and have 3 off , I remain in night shift mode on my days off :)

Fair enough, mate. As long as you're happy, feel well and your health is good, then I guess you've got nothing to worry about. I simply couldn't function on that level of sleep; I'd be a total wreck... I've never worked night shifts, so have no idea what that feels like.

Anyway, at least I can read your posts here now without wondering if you're having a meltdown!:D
