lol... BOSH! - You guys crack me up... lol
ok, I'll give that a go first.
ah, righto...thanks :)
Must admit though, it seems a bit odd that the bypass can't be controlled via Volumio.
Volumio web interface > Playback > Mixer TYpe - set this to hardware. Then logon to your RPi via SSH as root with password volumio and use "alsamixer" to set the device sound levels . See pages 18-20 http://www.iqaudio.com/downloads/IQaudIO.pdf for details.

And after setting the sound levels can we change the mixer type to "Disabled" or it is better to leave it on "Hardware"?

I don't think you'll find one better than the other SQ wise for a given set PCM level. I suggested using a mixer type of "hardware" as it leaves you with the convenience of volume control via the Volumio webui if you need it. By all means use mixer type "disabled" once you have worked out the best alsamixer levels for your own hifi amp setup. Not everyone has remote volume control on their amps, and if you feed the iqaudio DAC ouptut straight to a power amp you need volume control somewhere.
Hi Alex,
Success is the bane of small businesses, in the short term at least. The lead times for batch manufacture arent short, especially as a manufacturer will schedule a small run around any larger commitments for obvious reasons. Customers are disinclined to wait and so inital interest often evaporates just as you are gearing up to satisfy it... examples are legion.
1000 pieces is still a snall order - probably two or three hours on a single pick and place line, so you eill always suffer from scheduling issues with contract manufscturers.
It takes a significant amount of courage to commit your own money to a project like this.. if it doesnt take off you end up with a lot of unsalable stock. Given the very low unit prices I think gordons approsch is logical and justified. Yes, many will want to buy from stock but i bet they wouldnt like it the price of building and holding a large stock was built into the price.
All fair points, which are accepted. All I would ask is for Gordon to take more of an active role here in terms of communicating with AoS members, keeping them updated on developments, as a significant number of them now have bought his product, and it's only really the tip of the iceberg! :)
Marco.
In other news, I've (at long last) solved my issues with Spotify, which is now working perfectly!! :yay: :yay:
The problem was that instead of using the proper Spotify website to set up a starred playlist, I was accessing Spotify, via the webpage/player, and it wasn't 'talking' to Volumio. Therefore, when I was setting up a playlist there, it wasn't going anywhere other than the webpage/player.
Setting up playlists on the proper Spotify website, however, has solved the issue, and now all the playlists I've set up there appear for selection (and playback) on Volumio. Job done!
Tomorrow I shall pop my other SD card into the RPi, loaded with Rune Audio (and my library of music), and see how that compares with Volumio. I certainly like how, with the latter, you can see the album art and search music via genre, not just artist. Some also say that Rune sounds better than Volumio, so we shall see! :)

Hey guys I'm here. I can also be found on the volumio / rune audio and raspberry pi forums :-) I also reply to direct emails too.
We're ploughing through the orders and they should all go this week as planned - I hope you all enjoy the experience and do consider that we're not talking mega bucks here.
Life before Marcos was nice and controlled, we put in an order for 1000 Pi-DAC+ blanks and for 500 to be populated initially with the remaining 500 at a later date. The headphone amp was on 8 week lead time. The headphone sockets were a 14k MOQ (minimum order quantity) - so there was a period of time we looked at alternatives too which we've found.
The plan was to provide
1) A German hifi manufacturer the promised allocation
2) Tindie (which has been a great portal for us) customers majority of product
3) 2x UK distributors first batches
Then comes Marcos and friends :-)
Tindie INTEREST goes through the roof - the issue here is that these are not orders it's just interest and 1:1 conversion rate is not guaranteed. However, all those Pi-DAC+ I allocated to tindie got sold out in record time.
Later this week 50 boards are going to Pimoroni and 50 to ModMyPi. That should make ordering them a little cheaper for UK customers.
For ROW (rest of World) customers, we'll continue to use tindie.com but there is a large Chinese distie who want a large batch too and I'm already talking to a US distie.
I have already asked for the remaining 500 Pi-DAC blank PCBs to be populated (that's where the real costs lie) and these should be with me soon too (assuming no massive lead times for parts).
I hope that explains where we are and our plans. I want to provide every potential customer access to the product but availability is based on cash flow at the start of this. I do not have deep pockets to bankroll huge board / stock orders, so will build up as we go.
Any questions I am happy to take. I'm getting lots already - mostly about when order xyz will ship. I'm answering those too :-)
Right, back to packing and posting.....

Hey Gordon.
Thanks for the update. :)
Glad that AOS has been doing the business for you. Hopefully I'll have mine either today or tomorrow as it was shipped yesterday (with thanks).
So far it sounds very healthy for you which is superb. I guess that there is no time to stop once you have a full order book.
Personally I can't wait to get it running.
Thanks again
Jo
Hi Gordon,
Good to hear that things are going well - and long may it continue! You have a truly wonderful product there :)
Just don't be so much of a stranger in future, my friend ;)

Well done. I hadn't allowed for how you were (mis)using Spotify.
It is always more satisfying when one works out ones own problem. One learns in the process which can only be a good thing. and tends to be remembered.
You now appreciate that AoS is only part of IQaudios business base, though obviously a welcome addition.
Mine has been dispatched I learn so patience

Indeed. I didn't realise that there was a difference between the 'webpage' and the actual website...

Absolutely, although it was during a listening session yesterday with friends (when I'd taken the new Paul Hynes linear PSU, for the Pi, round for some comparisons), where I was prompted that I was misusing Spotify. That's also the benefit of having friends, who live locally, with similar interests :)
You now appreciate that AoS is only part of IQaudios business base, though obviously a welcome addition.
Of course, and I always did. However, there are undoubtedly benefits to be had for Gordon to hang around here more often, too! ;)
Marco.
Well the dac's arrived, fitted, volumio installed and working great through the headphone socket, playing a few songs from a usb stick. Will have to wait till next week to try and install in my main system using the wifi adaptor with my music library. Only small problem was getting the ip address for the web browser.

I've been getting email alerts with a tracking number. According the the royal mail tracking site, the package is supposed to have been delivered today, so I'll hopefully get it when I get home from work later. (much later if the trains are running like they usually do).

Leave it on, bruv :)
The more on/off, off/on that occurs, the more chance there is of something going wrong. The RPi draws a minuscule amount of current, so best just to leave it powered up, but dormant, then wake it up when you want to play moosik.

If you're powering it from a battery, you might not want to do that. In any case, you pay for kWh so you may, or may not, think consuming a couple of watts 24/7 for 365 days of the year is a trivial sum.
Personally, I wouldn't use a Rpi unless it could reliably go through a normal boot shutdown cycle once a day. Use the Volumio interface to turn if off which actually just halts the system. Then wait 30 secs to be safe before switching off power.
...Still waiting for my IQAudio DAC to arrive.
On the subject of using a Mac to flash a micro-SD card with Volumio:
I found this very frustrating. I downloaded Piwriter (v.1 and v.2) but there appears (from Googling it) to be problems/issues with Yosemite OS; I certainly couldn't get it to work.
I then used Windows7 (in both Bootcamp and Parallels mode - Mac users will know what I mean) and got utterly frustrated at the amount of advert web pages that opened when trying to download Volumio.
In the end I downloaded all the files I needed on the Mac and then copied them across to Windows7. I then used Win2DiskImager to flash the micro Sd card. (Win32 looks like something from the 1970s ...but it worked).
TBH I cannot understand why one needs dedicated software on the Mac. Surely one needs to erase the SD card using DiskUtiltiy (set to FAT32) and then drag-and-drop the Volumio contents across.(?)
I accidentally wiped all my data on an attached USB drive - so please heed all the warnings. Luckily nothing important was lost.
I have a 'few' spare USB hard drives I could use to attach to the Pi. I have a question: would I be better buying a NAS? (either one I populated myself with the spare HDs I have (assuming I can unscrew the cases and that the HDs have a SATA link)), or buy a dedicated NAS (e.g. from the Synology stable (e.g. DS215j))?
Thanks,
Richard.

I've just put 3 images (Volumio, Rune and Pico) on - using just Terminal on Mountain Lion Following these instructions: Run:
diskutil list
identify the disk (not partition) of your SD card. e.g. disk4 (not disk4s1)
diskutil unmountDisk /dev/<disk# from diskutil>
e.g. diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk4
sudo dd bs=1m if=<your image file>.img of=/dev/<disk# from diskutil>
e.g. sudo dd bs=1M if=2014-09-09-wheezy-raspbian.img of=/dev/disk4
(This will take a few minutes)
Dead easy!

Without a powered USB hub, the RPi is limited to a little over 1a max current draw through it's USB ports, so to attach more than one modern 2.5 USB drive to the RPi you'd probably need a powered hub. I'd try one USB HDD first to see if the RPi+ Pi-DAC+ lives up to your expectations, then think about investing in something like the DS215j and any new HDDs.

Thanks; the spare HDs i have are all 'powered'.
On another question: I have an iTunes library (quite a large one) AND a High Def library (with FLAC files etc) on the iMac, would the Pi be able to read both on the same HD? (I suspect that the answer is 'yes').
And thanks Martin for your answer; seems a little complicated to my mind (I can't believe that decades ago I was regarded as a computer guru) ...now so far behind...!

It seems daunting but literally 3 lines of text pasted into the Terminal window...
Hi Jo,
Glad you're loving it so far! :)
Thanks, Marco.
Does it automatically go in to a dormant state after a while?
Not as such. However, if it's not processing a music signal, then it is effectively 'dormant'. I leave mine switched on all the time, as I feel that's the correct thing to do, sonically and electrically.
When I need to switch it off (say when changing PSUs or SD cards), I go into the 'Turn Off' menu in Volumio and select the 'Power Off' option. I then allow about 30 seconds for it to carry that out, then do what I need to do. NEVER just switch off the RPi from the mains without going through the Power Off procedure, as otherwise you can corrupt the SD card.
Are we finding about 30% of the PCM master volume in alsamixer about average? Not disabled the volume in volumio yet.
The best plan is to set the PCM level at 86, for the meantime, and both of the boost options in alsamixer to full, select your preferred DSP filter (I mainly settle on the default one), and exit from alsamixer, shutting the terminal down afterwards. Then, with the 'Hardware' option in the Playback section of Volumio activated, adjust the PCM level on Playback, if necessary from the 86 position, using the little round numerical dial there to alter what is effectively the gain.
Adjust it to suit the requirements of your preamp, in terms of ensuring that you're able to use an adequate range of the volume control and that the sound is neither week or saturated sounding. This will vary from recording to recording, with some needing more input level (gain) than others. For lowest possible distortion the ideal PCM level is 86, but with some preamps that may be too low (I vary mine between 86 and 90), however if you can use it successfully at 86 (0db), then so much the better.
There are also a few other tweaks you can do. Essentially, you want to minimise the amount of processes running on the RPi at the one time, so you should disable everything that's unnecessary in normal use. In that respect, go into the Playback section and disable the 'Buffer before play' option (it should be set at 10% as default), as long as you can get away with it without incurring any skipping during playback.
Then go into the 'System' section and disable everything in 'Services Management', together with 'Streaming Services', if you have no plans to run Spotify. Also disable everything under 'Miscellaneous' and 'Compatibility Fixes'. You can then play around with 'Sound quality tweaks' and see whether you can hear any advantages in moving from the default position. My preference is for 'OCX', but you may like something else. The sonic differences are rather subtle, but in my opinion, worthwhile.
Hope this helps, and enjoy!

I have this on/off dilemma too. I thought to leave the RPi on all the time, but I live in an area, where occasionally power cuts occur and this may corrupt the sd card. In the other hand if I halt the system (turn off through Volumio interface) I find it very annoying to unplug/plug the PSU to turn the RPi on.
Using a battery pack would be a solution but... The RPi 2 draws about 300-500 mA. If I leave it on all the time it is about 7000-12000 mA for 24 h. Actually I tried with a 10000mA battery and it indicated about 50% discharge from morning to evening even when RPi is not in use but powered on. So the battery needs to be charged every night (using a timer is a good solution) and it must be powerful enough. And again if I turn off the RPi when not in use, I have to unplug/plug the USB cable from the battery to turn it on again.
Then I started to wonder if someone has invented some switch and found this solution (http://mausberry-circuits.myshopify.com/collections/frontpage). Didn't try it though. The switches are intelligent, i.e. they first halted the system (=turn off; =shutdown -h) and after that cut all the power to the RPi.
Other solutions would be this (http://www.ebay.de/itm/Funk-WiFi-Fernbedienung-Schalter-Steckdose-Stecker-fur-iOS-und-Android-Smart-EU-/361168547775?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_77&hash=item541752afbf) and this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Remote-Control-Sockets-Wireless-Switch-Home-Mains-UK-Plug-AC-Power-Outlet-/321690438086?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item4ae63e89c6). But the risk is to forget to turn off from Volumio interface first. And what about the SQ?
Another solution would be to use a PSU with switch, for example this (the option with DC-5V/2.5A) (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hifi-linear-power-DC-1-USB-amp-DAC-external-power-supply-with-digital-display-SN/111312388829?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%2 6asc%3D20140122125356%26meid%3D796d051ca44a42de97a f43d0a31b752d%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26 mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D111312373482&rt=nc&clk_rvr_id=823823340843&afsrc=1&rmvSB=true) And again the risk is to forget to turn off from Volumio interface first.
How did I solve the dilemma so far? I leave the RPi on all the time :)
You could use this with a battery http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-Cable-with-Switch-for-the-Raspberry-Pi-/331189748432?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4d1c7282d0

Hi Marco,
sorry dude... not quite getting that.

Rather than trying to manually type in the words "root" and "volumio", copy them from the screen instead and paste them into the appropriate places in Putty (when you gain access to the terminal), and hit the return key.
I sometimes have that problem myself, and get round it by copying and pasting, instead of typing in what's required, manually.

Ah, in that case, I can't help. Maybe try coming out of Putty and going back in again (or rebooting your computer), and see if that clears the problem?

That command is to connect to your RPi using SSH to login as the root user from a MAC or Linux machine, and, of course, assumes you have a network connection to your RPi. On Windows you have to use Putty, as you are.

Have you lost your internet connection to your RPi? Can you still access the Volumio Web interface in a browser? Use the "ping" command at the Windows cmd prompt to check you still have a network connection to RPi.

Sorry, scrub that, head not in gear. You really need to see the server side log, which of course you can't. (You could if you set up emailing from your RPi, but that's not something most people would want to do).
Before attemptiing to make a connection via Putty, pick the "default session" first. See 2nd screen shot here:

Highlight "default session" and click load button before entering ip of your RPi and clicking on open.

Hi Alan.
Putty doesn't hide either login or password details. Well, not this version anyway and I believe it's the latest one.

OK... yes, Alan is correct... it doesn't show the password. But.... But.... I distinctly remember typing the password... or did I just dream that bit?
Aaaaaaaanyway... thanks for your help, for those as nutty as me, it looks like it's hung, but in fact just type in your password and press enter.

When you plug the HDD in, does it say 'Updating' in the bottom left of Volumio?
Or have you gone in to Library and clicked Update Library ?

I tried connecting it using the NAS Mount and keep getting a red cross with address not found (or something like that). Then tried plugging the HDD into the Pi, I then get NAS, USB and RAM show up in Library, but no music files. I have done Library update, but nothing!
It will let me type 'root' fine,
...then waits a few seconds and comes up with
root@192.168.1.2's password: !!!(I can't type anything at this point, it just hangs then comes up the the error message)
Worked fine last night... wtf?
Alan,
Somewhat distracted, so didn't give this my full attention. Assumed you meant correct password was entered but failed to connect and eventually timed out. Good to know problem is now sorted.
You might find it handy to save a putty ssseion and create a shortcut for it on your Windows desktop:

Volumio did not find my HDD. I found out that it was a filesystem issue. After I formatted the music HDD to fat32, it was all ok. The other alternatives NTFS or VFAT did not work.
Only problem is that you need a special program to format a large HDD to fat32. Fat32 is the usual format of usb memory sticks. So you could try with a stick.

My HDD is NTFS I think... and all of the files are in the root so no sub-dir's.
If it's updating it must be doing something... so as Juha says, have a look at your HDD format first and then the DIR structure later?

Some progress, I now have Spotify working!
It's the 'NAS mount' that is causing the problem, just going to try a USB stick as suggested.
maybe this info will help ?

You could use this with a battery http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-Cable-with-Switch-for-the-Raspberry-Pi-/331189748432?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4d1c7282d0 Yes, this switch would be fine, thanks for the link :)
... It's the 'NAS mount' that is causing the problem, ...
You can check if you wrote the IP address correctly. Then be careful when entering the remote directory path, especially if there are some slashes, they should be this way: "/". Also check the user name and password, if you don't define any name and password in your NAS, you should enter "guest" for the user name field and leave the password field empty. I'm not so sure for the last thing (I'm using now Runeaudio and can't remeber how was exactly in Volumio)

I've mounted external HDD with NTFS file system without any problem.

Its arrived yay! Unfortunately the gremlins must have been watching and came out in force LOL.
Totally unrelated, I could not get the downstairs WiFi working, eventually had to change the channel and re-boot everything, 30 mins wasted!
Then decided to add the IQ DAC to the RPi hard wired to my TDA1541A DAC, this seemed to be OK...SSH in add the overlay to config.txt, reboot and fire up iPeng....it briefly saw the RPi then shutdown...hmmm. Could not get this working, not sure if there is a conflict with the overlay for the HiFiBerry DAC so decided to try another RPi. Another 30 mins wasted!
Built second RPi into IQAudio case but could not assemble!!!! First, one of the standoffs had a faulty thread so spent 20 mins finding a 2.5mm tap in the garage to re-thread it. Then had an issue with the two PCB 'flashing break off/snap off' points on the IQdac that must join the boards together in manufacture, these foul the case side so they had to be filled off - Gordon you may want to look into this....
Decided to have a coffee break and then plugged it all in, great no more issues it works!
Initial thoughts are it is very clean and neutral sounding, great detail and nothing obviously out of order...just need to find some time to properly compare with the TDA...

Received the Dac this morning and connected it to a freshly purchased Pi. Took only 10 minutes to have it fully working with Volumio with external USB HD. is the music coming from usb hd the optimal way of streaming it down? Any weird and wonderful settings that need to be changed for better sound? Played with alsamixer... Still can't comment on the sound but definitely doesn't come close to the analogue.

No serious comparisons yet with the rest of my system but it has made me think about the possibility of a NAS drive.
Any recommendations? Syncology? Zykel?

Oh, forgot to thank Marco. It's been exciting couple of weeks starting from virtually not knowing anything about rpi to having a fully working digital player in a mamatchbox. Not to mention endless ripping.
..
You're very welcome, guys. I do like to 'share the love', as it were, but I can take no credit for discovering the RPi (or IQ-Audio DAC). Others were happily using them a long time before me.
However, enjoy!
Marco.
Hi Marco
Not so much 'sharing the love' as a shove down the slippery slope for me :)
Before I started reading your thread earlier in the week I was the owner of an original RPi B that hadn't seen any volts in quite some time.
In less than 5 days I've now got it in a bodged case with a HiFiDiy Sabre DAC board playing music in the downstairs system and upstairs there's an RPi2 all cased up waiting for the arrival of an IQ Dac.
I was aware that people were using XBMC with the Pi - but it all seemed like too much effort....
Your enthusiasm for what you were hearing certainly sparked my interest ( and many others it's apparent) and I have to say what I'm hearing now certainly makes up for an hour or so scratching my head over setting up shares in the library screen - had my share of red X's until I realised that the WD NAS I'm using is still called Public even though I'd moved my music directories out of the public folder. Somewhere in the threads I found the tip about putting the ip address (\\192.168.1.XXX) of the host pc into the address bar of windows explorer to see how that displays the share names
Big thank you to AOS and TAS for the useful info...
cheers

Thank you for your response Gordon - its much appreciated. I saw your previous post but it didn't particularly set my mind at rest; just made me more jittery given that it looked like a lot of the new batch were already committed. Sorry if I got impatient but its been a long waiting game :)
Yes, thanks Gordon; mine arrived this morning and within ten minutes or so it was up and running.
It reads my USB stick OK but not my mini HD. I fear that it is NOT a question of current but the fact that the HD is formatted for the Mac. Am I right that I'll have to re-format it to some (for me) obscure format such as FAT32?
The spacers included with the kit were of of use for my Pimoroni coupe case. I live near the shop/warehouse so will visit them soon to get some advice/new hardware. I think Gordon said that Pimoroni will shortly receive 50 IQAudio DACs so anyone disappointed that they didn't get any in the present batch may wish to contact them.
Thanks,
Richard.

You could check to see what RPi is seeing as well, SSH into the Pi and type sudo blkid this will tell you what the file system is for the block storage devices the Pi can see.
sudo fdisk -l will tell you more about the device identifiers and the partitions.
Edit: oh, and cat /proc/mounts will list all mounts

The Apple OSX Disk Utility can format fat32 (MS-DOS file system) and later versions also NTFS (Windows NT file system).
Fat32 is the lowest common denominator that can be read by practically any device. It has some limitations on file size.
NTFS should be the better choice.
When I started with Volumio it seemed like a good idea to format an old disk to fat32 rather than learn the Linux commands to load e.g. the Apple file system.
We have heard on this thread that Volumio reads NTFS with no modifications.

You SSH from another machine - effectively using Unix bash remotely.
Depending what type of computer you've got...
From Mac (OSX) you just open the Terminal window and type the following
root@192.168.0.13 (example ip address) and the password is volumio
It really is simple.
Martin
Well you can attach a screen and keyboard and access the RPi console directly or you can use a separate PC / Mac and SSH into it over your local network...on a Mac its easy, open up a terminal session (located in utilities or other depending on OSX version) and use ssh pi@192.168.1.108 (assuming Volumio installed) or whatever the address is for your RPi. The password is raspberry
For windows you have to muck around with a program called PuTTY
If this all sounds too daunting it may be easier to just use a USB thumb drive / stick formatted to FAT and copy your music tracks over to it and just plug it in!

I received my Raspberry Pi2 and SD Card on Friday... and last night I received my tindle email to say that my iqAudio DAC+ & case were on theway. Cheers Gordon :)
This afternoon, I had a spare couple of hours and decided to setup the PI and connect it via USB to my Caiman DAC. Well I needed to sort some of the cabling out on the amplifier anyway ;)
I decided to go with the RuneAudio distribution instead of volumio. First hurdle was trying to connect the PI to my Western Digital NAS drive with 2.3 Terabytes of apple lossless files. RuneAudio was easy to navigate, but I could not get it to successfully connect to the NAS share to see my files.
To cut a long story short.... after 3 hours of searching on Google I discovered the problem!!! On adding my NAS to the Library source I was omitting to add a final slash to the directory structure in the box labelled Remote Directory
I was following various threads and typing in media/Music because I could see the share under Windows as \\192.168.0.15\media\Music I thought it was enough to simply swap the windows backslash to the Linux forward slash. Nope, what I needed to type into the Remote Directory box was media/Music/ note the all important slash at the end !
Not sure whether this will make sense, but if you are trying to connect to a NAS box for your library source, and keep getting the error message Mount.failed (22) invalid argument consult the manual you may find that simply adding an extra / to the end of the remote directory might solve it.
YMMV but it worked for my Western Digital MyBookLive which is an excellent piece of inexpensive kit. I just wish the error message in RuneAudio was a little bit more informative to a Windows luddite like me.
Happily listening to some tunes drinking a bottle of wine.... looking forward to the arrival of the DAC+ and case later in the week
Well done to you, congrats :) Making settings is a bit of a pain, but after that this brings even more pleasure :)
Just one thing regarding RuneAudio. If you have installed the distribution from the iqaudio site ( http://www.iqaudio.com/downloads/ ) it is already preconfigured for working with the pi-dac. However, if you have installed the distro from the runeaudio site, you should activate the i2s driver manually through the command line interface (ssh/putty), changing some lines in /boot/config.txt. If you already know this, apologies for these needless details.
I see that the next release of Moode Audio (v1.9) will have built in support for BBC radio stations. I downloaded 1.8 over the weekend and the interface seems to be getting a lot of development work - This seems to be the one to watch at the moment...

IMHO (without having and trying Pi-DAC) the same will be with the IQaudio distro, referring to the manual, p.19: http://www.iqaudio.com/downloads/IQaudIO.pdf . The picture there says "Card: IQaudIODAC" without "+" :)

It seems to have only one ethernet port so I'm guessing the pi would need a wireless adapter

Just quick question, is it possible to use a NAS like the suggested WD MyBookLive in purely LAN configuration?
James... my WD MybookLive NAS is connected to my router by ethernet cable and the Raspberry PI is plugged in via ethernet as well. The NAS gets an IP Address from the router as does the Raspberry PI. So all the data movement goes via wires not by any wireless method. Actually this is the main reason why I wanted to go the PI-DAC+ route.... as using my Apple Airport Express I was getting sound drop-outs and no HIDEF audio via wireless.
They don't make my version of the box anymore but this is the later version http://www.amazon.co.uk/WD-Cloud-Personal-Storage-NAS/dp/B00FOKN7B0/ref=pd_cp_computers_1 I think it is in line with the spirit of this thread.... excellent value for money.
Don't forget the advantage of going this route as opposed to a USB connected hard drive is that the NAS Box is available across the whole of your network. So I can play the same music files on my iPad or laptop for headphone listening in the other room.
The MyBookLive can do fancy stuff like streaming video (in fact I do so to my Samsung TV) but for the Raspberry PI its just a blooming big folder stuffed full of tunes :eyebrows:
Hope that helps...

Thanks very much for that as I did decide to go directly to the RuneAudio site as I noticed that they had a newer image labelled especially for a Raspberry PI2 (the newer quad core 1GB version I have). James.... you're iMac would connect to the router via wireless as it normally does. The NAS box would show up as a storage device, would look like another computer. Out of the box it has a shared folder which you would see on you iMac and could copy music to it.
In reality the MyBookLive has a little embedded computer in it (actually runs Linux just like the raspberry pi) and one big hard disk attached. So once you connect it to the router via the ethernet cable, every other computer on the same network can see. No need for USB at all. All clever stuff!

The seller stated there are 5 options for the PSU, and one of those is "1: DC-5V/2.5A". The original RPi PSU is 5V/2A. So are these 0.5A more than the original is some how dangerous. Sorry for the stupid questions, but I'm a numpty in electronics and electricity.

No it's fine. That is just the maximum that it can provide. Usually better to have an overspecced power supply in any case.
It would also mean that there is enough current to power a 2.5" hard drive from the USB port of the Pi if you want to store your music locally rather than play over the network. I'm about to build one configured like this for a friend, so I might just try one of these.

Be carefull in what you plug into the pi as far current is concerned, the pi circuitry iis limited to supplying a maximum amount of current no matter how big the power supply.
If your not sure, look up the spec, For hard drives and NAS drives i would recomend using ones that have they're own power supplies.
It would also mean that there is enough current to power a 2.5" hard drive from the USB port of the Pi if you want to store your music locally rather than play over the network. I'm about to build one configured like this for a friend, so I might just try one of these.

The specs for the Pi B+ and the Pi 2 are that you can have 1200mA delivered to the USB ports rather than the 600mA of the original models. 1200mA will be ample (no pun intended) for USB2 and 3 2.5" hard drives and I've had this set up and working without any issues.

I can alter the bit depth so long as it stays at 44.1khz but I can't seem to move up on the khz scale as it jumps like mad.

I can confirm too, that I've tried using an external 2,5" HDD (WD MyPassport 500GB) without any problems, but needed to tweak the config.txt with additional line (max_usb_current=1). Before this tweak the HDD didn't work. However I continue to prefer using a NAS, rather than local HDD.

Not that interesting I know ...but just an update.
I've just come back from Pimorino in Sheffield where I purchased a wifi dongle (now working perfectly). They now have the IQAudio DAC boards in stock.
I originally bought a Pi with their "Coupe" case. The spacers supplied by IQ are too large for this combination. Pimorino fitted me with some extra 'feet' that now support the front edge of the DAC board. They promise to look into the 'issue' so that anyone ordering from them will be confident that the Pi and DAC boards will fit their cases. I think it wise, if ordering from them that you mention the spacer issue and ask them for their best advice. I spoke to Matt who is very helpful.
(Usual disclaimers)
On another issue, is anyone else having problems in shutting Volumio down? All I get is a dark(er) screen and a 'connecting' wheel that never stops. I re-imaged Volumio onto the micro SD card but the problem persists.
Again, thanks to Marco and Martin T for their help and inspiration. I have a Synology NAS on order too so will be interested in how that performs.
I've got the bug and am enjoying listening to my music all over again. My Caiman2 now seems a little redundant (perhaps I should try the HiBerry into Caiman alternative...?)

Richard.

When you shut down I think it just goes in to a dormant state (not totally off) so Volumio sits waiting for connection. Even if you leave it for a while it seems to go dormant hence Volumio waits to connect. I simply refresh the page and it pops back to life although the HDD can sometimes need a restart but not always.

Actually I think this is normal. When you click the TurnOff button from the browser, the RPi starts the process of shutting down the OS, so the lan connection is cut and the browser couldn't connect anymore with the RPi. That's why is this endless wheel. When you click turnoff button, you can just close the browser window.
PS. oops, The Black Adder already replied. Sorry for doubling
I Finally have my pi/dac connected to my main system in the living room, streaming from my NAS drive via a wifi adaptor, Volumio was a bit of a pain to set up but seems ok now, but it does feel like a very flaky piece of software. For the price the sound quality is amazing, sounding a little smoother and more detailed then my Bushmaster/Touch combination, just wished Volumio was more reliable, will have a look at what other software is out there, would be nice to get ipeng up and running with it.
Thanks Jo and Peter; reassuring!

Correction to my penultimate post:
RPi Newbie here ..about to ask some silly questions...
I have the PI +IQAudio up and running using ethernet. I have just bought an approved wi-fi dongle and despite following Martin T's excellent instructions just cannot get it to be recognised. I've rebooted several times, used different usb ports, disconnected the ethernet and rebooted ...all to no avail. I need to go wireless as I've ordered a NAS which I believe needs to be connected by ethernet for best results.
I've googled the 'issue' and although there are several solutions offered to others they all involve typing in code. (http://www.raspyfi.com/wi-fi-on-raspberry-pi-a-simple-guide/).
At present my system is 'headless'.
However, just to try - I plugged in an hdmi cable + keyboard to my TV. Volumio crashed. Am I right that Volumio does not contain an OS? If so, do I have to squeeze an OS such as Raspian onto the same micro-SD card?
Any help gratefully received. One small possibility is that it's the dongle of course - but I somehow doubt it.
Thanks,
Richard.

Hello Barry
Get picoreplayer https://sites.google.com/site/picoreplayer/home then you can get rid of Volumio and have a squeezebox to fit in with your infrastructure. Squeezeplug/Max2Play is also a possibility although that is not as lightweight (but it does include the option of LMS on a RPi!)
Bonky, make sure you have the ethernet and wifi adaptor coneected at the same time, boot the pi and enter the wifi details (modem name, security type, password) into Volumio under network in the menu, save and reboot and it should pick up the wifi connection, unplug the ethernt cable and it should work, but I have found vollumio to be very hit and miss.

Not sure if it's been touched on in this thread but upsampling seems to be making a huge difference in sound. I'm running mine in 32bit/192 sampling rate with Fastest sinc interpolator (flux capacitor). God knows why upsampling works.

Interesting. Anyone know if picoreplayer can pull off up sampling sleight of hand too?
this thing is a regular hoot.
had lot of fun putting the bits together in an old project box and then pissing about for hours trying to get a disk image to work using a Mac and then back and forth to the router to try each one
... gave up and booted up ye olde windows netbook and finally got the thing to show up plugged in to my monitor - delightful screen full of gibberish culminating in an old skool 'volumio' logo in archaic grafix (white text on a black screen - how cool is that!!!)
Haven't had so much fun since I spent a happy Boxing Day typing in pages of crap just to get a Sinclair ZX81 to show a ping-pong screen on my TV
For all you those users of Volumio / Moode / Rune MPD based players out there have any of you tried the MPaD app for IOS to control the RPi?
It seems a far better interface to MPD than the inbuilt web interfaces that they come with...just wondering if anybody has experience of it?
There's a free version: MPoD, I feel a testing session coming on....
Didn't try MPoD, but I'm using from time to time PlugPlayer (iOS) and BubleUPNP (Android), both nice apps with nice interface.

Although the "how-to" page at https://sites.google.com/site/picoreplayer/home/how-to-1 has no mention of re/upsampling it's supposed to have been in picoreplayer since version 1.10, over a year ago using sox.
But unless you have the latest quad core PI, upsampling via sox results in high CPU loads which can make the PI unresponsive.
I assume you're running LMS on your vortexbox. So the alternative is to do the upsampling on the server which AFIAK means using a custon.convert file. ( see this old soundheck post: http://soundcheck-audio.blogspot.co.uk/2011/04/tt-resampling.html ). Otherwise check the vortexbox forums ..
Plenty to get your teeth into.

Just purchased MPad for my ipad, good value for money at £2.29, not as polished as ipeng, but a lot easier to use then the Volumio web interface, plus you have cover art.

Just changed upsampling to 32 bit 384khz and this is the best digital sound I've ever listened to (i don't do digital If i can help it). the files are flac from normal cds. Without upsampling, the sound is just average. I'm surprised no one else has commented on this.

Tried this for the first time tonight. Much more detailed and you can clearly hear more deeply into the mix.
Now onto the software players;-
Tried Volumio first. It is buggy and I was getting drops in playback over the network which I was starting to suspect the network.
Moved onto Rune Audio second. This is the largest programme and it's slow to navigate. Plus I was getting drops in playback lasting 7 to 8 seconds. You also have to enable the DAC board in Linux, not for the faint heart.
Thirdly tried Moode available from tcmods.org. This is my favourite and the one I am staying with. There are frequent updates and the album art. It's fast, snappy and no network drops. BBC radio streams coming soon. So I rate them;-
1 Moode
2 Volumio
3 Rune Audio.

So ... got all the bits today, installed Volumio but have a couple of problems. I can connect through a browser ONLY if I use the IP address, connecting to volumio.local doesn't work?
Bigger problem though is I can't figure out how to add my music library. It's held on a HP microserver running WHS V1. I've set the folder as a share (and I can connect to it from my windows box), I've set the Volumio mount as SMB/CIFS, IP address of my server, remote directory as music/flac but I get a mount error 22. help!

In an earlier post I recounted my (personal) solution to getting the mount error 22. I discovered I needed to put an extra slash at the end of the remote directory. So in your case it would be music/flac/ Of course, your mileage might vary, but it worked for me.
It would be great for usability if the writers of Moode, Volumio etc actually provided a way of upgrading their players without having to flipping' well down load the whole sodding image and flashing it again! :steam: Oh and set it all back up! :brickwall:

No joy with the extra slash. I'll have another look at it tonight. I think WHS V1 uses NTFS file format, is that the same as SMB/CIFS?
I had a play with upsampling when I was using the HiFiBerry and the older model B Pi and the Pi was quickly running out of steam if I did anything more than 96KHz upsampling, although even then there was certainly a difference. It seems the Pi 2 has the requisite horse power to match the limits of what the PCM5122 DAC on the IQAudio can cope with, which I hadn't realised, so it's time to start playing again - Not that I'm really looking for further improvements of course ;-).
Thanks for the heads up!

Don't know if you've found it yet, but it's on the squeezelite settings page. Next question is what do you enter? The best explanation of how this works in squeezelite that I've seen was posted here by John Swenson:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?99088-Upsampling-Impressions&p=751357&viewfull=1#post751357
About the simplest approach is to use a combination of a "max sample rate setting" with a upsample setting of "-u X". But you are going to have to experiment to see if upsampling makes a positive difference to what you hear, and with the various options outlined in John Swenson's post.
I only have a RPi B+ so I have not spent much time on this.
(Carried over from post 1133)
Good news!
I swapped the white wi-fi- dongle for an Edimax type and it worked first time; all up-and-running.
Now for the NAS - when it arrives.
Pimorini plugged the offending white dongle into their set-up and it would not work, neither would a replacement. It may be that there are problems with this new type of dongle - perhaps only with Volumio - they were going to test the batch with NOOB.
I've asked for feedback on this and will report back if I hear anything.
So, my take on all this is: buy the Edimix type dongle if you have Volumio. (See: http://shop.pimoroni.com/products/wireless-n-nano-usb-adaptor)
Thanks everyone!

Spent the last 4 hours reading ALL 177 pages ... time for a cup of tea and a lie down
All set up now - bunged into a project box with some appropriate holes gouged in it ....
Spent this morning pratting about with router, addresses, etc and finally got it singing. Initially tried MoOde but it wouldn't recognise my wifi dongle - or scan the USB stick ... or play any music
Reverted to Volumnio/IQ Dac image of of IQaudio website.
Playing some muzak over my system now using USB stick - sounds on a par with playing WAV files on my Toshiba BluRay thru coax out (but a lot more hassle)
TOP TIP:
If you use AIFF files and folders from iTunes you may (like me) encounter loads of hassles after updating the library ... missing files, tracks in the wrong sequence and much more besides HOWEVER the upload of the same music folders converted to WAV is infinitely better - all properly organised AND playback is also improved !!!! - win win :)

I've just encountered this upgrading moode to v1.8 from v1.7
I thought I had entered in the settings for my nsa320s correctly it was working fine after all but nope mount error 22. Nothing seemed to work so I deleted the mount setting and rebooted the RPi then tried again, it worked first time!
The only thing I think I may have done incorrectly the first time was to try and mount the nas as NFS, subsequent setting changes kept generating the error 22. It maybe worth trying a delete of the mount before trying different settings if things seems to be 'stuck'

I had a little play with some DSD files last night. Another thing that I expected not to be able to play having tried them a while ago and got nothing but noise, but now they're playing, the odd little glitch here and there but that's probably a buffering rather than a processing issue. I have a couple of the old Peter Gabriel era Genesis albums in DSD that I've never been able to play before and they've come as something of a revelation. I was comparing 'Firth of Fifth' from Selling England by the Pound, one of my favourite tracks with the best version I ever managed to find on CD, and even though the CD is very good, the DSD file shows it up to have been mastered hot and the piano sounds mechanical in comparison to the effortless natural sounding rendition the DSD gives you. Fantastic!
Of course this has opened up a whole new (very expensive) avenue :stalks:

I have set it to use my login details for WHS and I am 100% sure they are correct. I've also enabled the guest account on the WHS and tried using 'guest' as the username with no password and get the same error. I'll try re-writing the image to the memory card tonight and give it another bash.
I quickly had a go with PiCore Player and LMS sees the Pi/iqDAC so I'll connect it to my system tonight and give it a whirl to see if I can get it to play - would be good to be able to compare PiCorePlayer and Volumio.

I don't think you need to enter the name "guest" to connect as a guest. Just leave both fields blank in Volumio.
If you connected to your WHS share from another Windows PC while the "guest account" was enabled for that share and without being prompted for a "user" & "password", then you've not really tested if you can connect to the share with your WHS login details. Have a look at the share properties in WHS to see the list of user that have been granted access.
It would be good for someone to compare LMS/picoreplayer versus Voulmio for SQ.

Just to confirm:

- EU post within 10 working days
- USA/CANADA within 10 working days
- AUSTRALIA varies from 10 to 15 working days.
We use Royal Mail tracked / signed for services - this way we can ensure the product gets to where it needs to.
Since we've been doing Pi-DAC only 2 packages have gone awol. One I am sure was received by the customer but I sent a replacement in any case. The other to the UK just got lost and again this was replaced.

My account on WHS is set up with RW access on all shares, the kids all have accounts that are read only and can only access some of the shares. If I access one of the restricted shares from the kids PC I get prompted to enter a username and password and I can use my username and password to get access so I'm 100% sure I have WHS configured for me to have full access to all shares. As I said, I'll try re-writing the image to see if that makes any difference and I'll try logging in with no username or password to see if it will let me access using the guest account. There are definitely still some bugs in Volumio when it comes to mounting remote shared drives. I remember tearing my hair out over this when I was trying to get it to point at my NAS box. It was another good reason for moving to MinimServer as this circumvents all of that hassle.
I'm not sure if this will help, but as I remember it, Volumio has trouble with mounting guest accounts, so you're better off with a proper login and password, but even then, there is a bug in the underlying Linux kernel. Something worth trying is to click the Advanced options at the bottom of the screen and add sec=ntlm to the end of what is already on that line - start with a comma to delimit it from any options that precede it. This worksaround a cifs/samba bug in the Linux client and I remember that helped me when I was using Volumio to perform remote share mounting.
There is a discussion here that goes into more depth:

You beat me to it with using "sec=ntlm" as a mount option, but it's not a kernel bug. In fact. this is not any kind of bug.
If relates to the default security mode used for SMB/CIFS mounts in more recent kernels which changed from ntlm to ntlmssp. Depending on what version of SMB is runing on your Windows PC, NAS etc. you may need to add the "sec=ntlm" mount option. There's a brief explanation here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2230952
Note: "sec" is the security mode and determines how passwords are encrypted between server and client ( even if you don't require passwords ).
Hence it appears Volumio has trouble with mounting guest accounts, but's all down to using the correct security mode.
Yay! Glad you got it sorted Stuart! However, it just goes to show this stuff in its current incarnation is very much v1.0... heres hoping it moves to v2.0 PDQ :D

Yay! Great to hear that worked. Hope it's all plain sailing from here on in. That was the one thing that caused me a lot of head scratching so hopefully it's all good now.
I retract my statement that it's a bug. It's a bug in the same way that I call the fact that the newest versions of Filezilla make every connection connect using TLS encryption which many FTP sites don't use, so you can no longer use the quickconnect option which is a royal pain, so I tend to call anything that causes unnecessary extra steps a bug, but probably more diplomatic to call them 'functional quirks'

You mean it bugs you and quite possibly doesn't bug others.
You appreciate how the word bug is used by the majority of computer users in the English speaking world, daft lot.

Been having a good listen this morning, it's good, not great. A bit harsh and recessed compared to my touch through Mdac. The volume level is quite different from the mdac but that might be because I'm using the balanced output on the mdac. I've set the pcm level to 86 and the other 2 are at 100 in alsamixer. How do I check the output voltage is 2V? I'll leave it running all day and hopefully it'll improve.

Takes about 50 hours to hit it's sweet spot 😉

Forgive my poor powers of English comprehension - you are saying PI-DAC+ via Volumio is harsh? What were you playing out of 16/44 -> 24/192?
Wish I lived around the corner I'd love to hear what you find harsh. I hear many say MDACs are a bit light and bright so are touches a neutral device?
I don't know about coming on song, I find it hard to remember what I listened to 50 hours ago. My rPi PI-DAC+ combo just sounds "different" according to what I listen to. As such I see them as being revealing of the source feed.
Hope you get used to it.

Yep, harsh.
I've got it set to:
audio output - IQaudioDAC
mixer type - Hardware
dsd over pcm - no
volume norm - no
audio buffer -2048
buffer before play - disabled
output format 32 bit/384khz
sample rate conv - fastest sinc interpolator
and it's looping on Sam Smith ripped to FLAC 16bit 44.1khz
I've been through a whole bunch of dacs (Benchmark, Eastern Electric, Musical Fidelity, Perreaux to name a few) and the MDAC is the best of the bunch. Amp is a Luxman L550aii and speakers are Impulse Tu'us.
Is there a way to totally disable the volume control in Volumio so it's only the amp that can adjust it? I'm sure I read a thread on that the other day but I've been looking for it and can't find it now. Ah might have found it, do I set the Mixer Type in Volumio to Disabled?
Yes that's the right setting. I guess you've also tried it with no upsampling and still found it harsh? Very strange as harsh is one word I'd never use to describe mine - I'm about to try my new DAC board as I'm curious as to whether there's a difference in quality between this new batch and the last ones...

I do however have to drop the upsampling down a notch from the top though... anyone else find this, can it be fixed or is it just too much for it's little mind to cope with?

Yep, same here. It will play, but as soon as another task kicks in, such as access from the web browser, there's a glitch. Looking at the process monitor, the processor is getting a hammering, so I guess the Pi is running out of steam at this point. Not sure I could discern the difference between the high and very high resampling settings anyway, other than audiophilia nervosa setting in.

Apparently you can, but you need some heat sink cooling on it's loaf.
Better to burn out, than to fade away!... lol

No obvious differences on a quick comparison between new and old boards, certainly no increase in harshness.

I increased the buffer size and it played correctly for longer, then it fell over.. lol

Yep - go to 'Playback' in the Menu options and choose 'disabled' from the Volume Mixer options (don't forget to save that setting before moving on ... I have many times)
Edited to add that I have found he 'Hardware' setting the best option so far with 'disabled' causing the most clipping of high frequencies. With hardware enabled I set the onscreen volume between 70 to 75 and this gives playback that's as sweet as a nut. Strangely this is best input to the Radio in on my Quad 34/303 set up. I say strange because the Radio input is rated at 100mv and is normally totally unsuitable for the output levels of my other DACS .......

Ok... guys we have a problem.
Within the last hour everythng has gone wrong.
I copied some new tracks to the HD. Started up the Pi and logged in to Volumio. I then updated the HDD in Volumio. The HDD made some heathly reading noises then stopped... I waited and waited... 'Updating' it was saying... and waited until the HDD switched off.
Right... I checked the USB path in Volumio and nothing was updated apart from the first few folders.
So I re-jigged some files on the HDD... did the proceedure again... no luck, same as before.
I plugged in another drive... same thing.
So I downloaded Rune instead of Volumio, thinking it was corrupted in the SD card.
I've just tried to write the IQAudio version of Rune to the 8GB card but it says it has no room.
Not enough space on the disk: Size: 15415296 sectors Available: 15130624 sectors - Sector size: 512
Does anyone know what I can do... I've downloaded SD Formatter and formatted the card but nope....
I'll stick Volumio back on it but can anyone shed any light on this... it was all working perfectly until I copied the new tracks to the HDD.
Thanks

Getting a bit worried now. It now can't see the wifi and the updating is simply not working... bugger!
At a guess I would think that running the HDD via USB was taking the power load to the edge and that the update toppled it over - If you are running on the stock Pi wall wart this could certainly be the case.
As far as the Rune Audio image you could try a 16gb card which should accommodate it with ease - Staples or Currys/PC World in the neighbourhood?
In the meantime you could revert to a USB stick with your previous Volumio card and see if that helps (unless the power demands have crippled the Pi :(

As already said, it could be a power problem. What type of usb HDD are you using? Is this the first major MPD update and scan of audio files on your HDD that you've made? What is the rating of your RPi PSU? A reboot may have determined if the system was corrupt.
IIRC Gordon mentioned somewhere that his IQAudio version of Rune may not fit all 8GB cards. Not all 8GB cards have the same storage capacity. It's always a good idea to back up your SD card so you can reflash after a system crash, if in fact this is what has happened.

Have just unzipped the IQaudio Rune file and it's 7.89 GB - this will obviously be a struggle with a formatted 8GB card

Hi Chris.
Many thanks....
How odd...
The HDD is a powered one so I didn't think that would cause a problem. It was working fine until I put some more files on the drive too!
It's now been going for over an hour now updating and it's now updated most of the folders. So it's very, very slow.
I've updated a few times without any probs...
It's the original RPi PSU btw.
Still updating.... grr!

I'm intrigued by these reports of the iQdac sound harsh or rough, I have one of the new boards and it's anything but...I wold try it with the re sampling set to off to start with and if you are using 16/44.1 source material stick to intega re sampling IE. 16/88.2 or 16/176.4
Completely agree. I've had a useful afternoon of fixing things and doing some comparisons. The Naim CDi belonging to a friend of mine needed some attention as it had stopped playing discs so I did some work on that this afternoon and when I got it working, I sat down and made some comparisons between that and the Pi/IQ. First of all to volume levels. The Pi by default is a LOT quieter, so to get the two to match, I set the PCM output to 96% and using alsamixer set the two boost settings to maximum. Levels are now matched and I don't seem to (so far) be getting any distortion, so that's great.
Now to do some real comparisons. Things are certainly closer than last time the CDi was here and bearing in mind that the CDi is one of the finest CD players I've ever heard, that's pretty good going. My old Audiolab 8200CDQ couldn't hold a candle to the CDi so the fact that the Pi is lacking a little in terms of instrument weight and tonality compared to the CDi pleases me no end. To get there though I changed a few settings:
Upsampling is now off - Soundstage is wider with it switched on, but I think some instrument definition is lost.
Kernel tweaks: Orion - I've been using ACX till now, but Orion is better at decay and puts a bit more space around things
Buffer before play: Off
Everything else is pretty much stock

Left it running since this morning, still sounding the same so started messing with settings. So far I think the best settings are no up sampling and best interpolation- either of the other 2 interpolation settings don't sound good to me, they both add harshness. Changing sampling rate makes some tracks crisper but on some it makes the track sound a bit hollow, it loses body. I shall continue to experiment but the gap to the mdac has definitely closed substantially from my starting point.
If you have upsampling disabled then the sample rate converter settings *SHOULD* make no difference.

sorry I haven't got it disabled, I've set it at 16 bit 44.1 which really should be the same as disabled as all my files are that format? I guess that's why I still hear a difference when I mess with the interpolator. I'll try it set at disabled and see if I can hear any difference.

I'm wondering if I've not flashed the SD card properly. Would the ethernet port light up if there was not an operating system installed correctly?
The Pi2 finally arrived on Friday.
Got it to boot with PiCorePlayer in no time using a micro SD nicked from my daughter's mobile phone.
Left it to play Radioparadise over the night.
Hooked via USB into an STA326-based Chinese FDA/DDA - The Pi2 is sounding very very good indeed already today.
Will try with CII later..and hopefully the result will go up a few more notches.

As we are flashing the SD cards from a preconfigured image file it is likely that the image was not written correctly to the SD card or the RPi is faulty.

Had nothing but problems loading Moode ... when it finally did work it was flakey at best and often missed out bits of the graphic interface on reboot. Sticking with the Volume/IQaudio image for now, works like a charm and steady as a rock.
Might download a new Moode image and try again at some point.

Ah yes that would explain it. If it's enabled, even if your audio is at the same rate, SoX/SRC will still resample so the setting of the sample rate converter will still come into play. If it's disabled then what gets to the DAC is what comes in, which is what I am sticking with now. Curiously though, with upsampling disabled, I can no longer play DSD files, but for the amount of DSD I have, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
I seriously need to give this Naim CDi back, because it's made me start missing CDs, which is perverse considering I never really liked them anyway! Figure that one out!

That's what people used to say about vinyl - never liked it, pain in the arse, so I sold it all and moved on to CD. Then they realise they miss the extra large physicality of vinyl. You may find yourself enjoying the physicality of CD again after going to FBA.

what's the total power draw for the Pi2 and iqAudio dac, must be getting close to the 100mA that the Lidl supply can put out?

i suppose its a standard 2.1mm tip on the pi?
I read somewhere that the pi/dac draws 300mA in use, the Lidl solar charger output is 5V/0.5 amp according to the manual.

so it is, I was looking at the solar panel spec rather than the actual output from the supply.
MY Pi & Dac combo is now operational. a hdd plugged into the usb port and hard wired currently into the router. control is via my tablet using volumio and powered by my tablet charger. Looking at the charge times, I would say it's probably not a good bet. That battery at capacity will run the Pi + DAC for somewhere in the region of 7 hours without a top up, but the quoted figures for recharging are most likely with the panel sat outside facing the sun. If it's going to sit in a window to get charge, you can probably at least double that charge time figure. Comparing the charging times when plugged in, it doesn't look like a very good quality solar panel. If the solar panel isn't that much of an issue, then you're better off with an Anker battery which are very good.
I think a decent quality 5V feed from the mains is going to beat a battery though.

Hi Stephen,
Good question! I've been away visiting friends up in Scotland, and have just got back, so haven't had time to do anything much with hi-fi. However, I should be able to get some pics up, along with a review, before the weekend - so watch this space :)
In the meantime, I can certainly confirm that it is very good indeed and elevates the sonic performance of the RPi into the veritable super-league!

Thanks Rich, I am using a Anker battery at the moment.
Hi Peter
I would like to use an un-powered hdd straight into my RPI but when i plug it in it just sort of spins up then stops then spins again, i guess i need to tweak the config.txt as you have done but don't know how to, could you talk me through how to do this?
Thanks
I can confirm too, that I've tried using an external 2,5" HDD (WD MyPassport 500GB) without any problems, but needed to tweak the config.txt with additional line (max_usb_current=1). Before this tweak the HDD didn't work. However I continue to prefer using a NAS, rather than local HDD.
Thanks Marco.
My PH supply already on order.
Top man
You'll be in for a major treat!
Marco.

Hi Terry,
Grant already replied you, but I wanted to ask you do you know how to use putty and do you use Windows or Mac. If you aren't familiar with putty the explanation I've made in another forum will not be sufficient and I can provide you more detailed info how to tweak config.txt.

A brief follow up on what Peter has said and the ref to his post at theaudiostandard forum. Once you have worked out how to connect to your RPi via SSH, you can log in as the "root" user with password "volumio" (unless your're not using Volumio).
Two points - (a) commands do not need to be prefixed by "sudo" , (b) the following single command will append the appropriate line of text to the "/boot/config.txt" file:
echo max_usb_current=1 >> /boot/config.txt
Then reboot your RPi either via the Volumio web interface, or via the command line:
reboot
Nice one Chris! Also goes without saying that you need a 2A supply and beware of poorly made micro USB power leads as they can drop too much voltage under load which will prevent the drive spinning up...
Thank you so much everyone - i have taken out the sd card and added the command line that you gave me and am now adding the files to the hdd, i will let you know how i get on.

Does anyone know if our IQ Audio Dac + cards can play DSD .dsf files?
Thanks
Stephen
