I think they can locate really accurately just with sound as I've thrown scrunched up paper from behind our cat and without looking she has just thrown a paw up and knocked it out of mid air :D

YES, she was part Persian apparently...did not like too many people...a typical snooty cat, but was always my girl, and died lying beside me at night. Not looking at her best there, coat wise, but was a big cat and when younger bossed the neighborhood..

Don't suffer from low self esteem do they , sky Is part Persian , part tortoiseshell ( hence possessing the quality of tortitude ) and we find she's pretty judgement all with people too. Crucially though , people she didn't like ended up being people that we fell out with at some point later.

No cat at the moment, but have promised avatar #1 we'll seriously consider it in a month or so when we get back from holiday. Not that I don't like cats - I LOVE them, but it's the heartbreak of losing them I can't stand - living on a busy road opposite a wood doesn't help as they will be looking to take a chance all the time.

I've had him a year. He's my rescued and re-homed pooch, reckoned to be about 8 years old. He's totally bonded with me and wants to know where I am at all times. He loves everybody in the house, but wants to eat anybody who rings the doorbell, good guard dog, but very soppy really. I think he's been mistreated in the past, as he cowers if anybody picks up anything that looks like a stick, poor boy. He's a lovely dog!

Yes you definitely have the knack now Richard.

Have you tried experimenting with sizes? Your image hosting site probably offers options, I often use the 640x480 message board size, as I find that adequate.

Your first photo of the dogs is very nice. You may be aware that the second photo has a 'depth of field' issue, if your camera offers it, try a smaller aperture and use more light (it doesn't look like a flash shot). I'm not criticising, I turn out imperfect shots myself, but tend to know the reason.

Thanks Geoff. Both bits of advice much appreciated. I'll have a go with another size next. I was aware of the depth of field issue - this was a rushed response to a "cluttered arrangement" previous criticism. And maybe subliminally I was emphasising the arm as a feature - nah not really, rushed! I am rushing things, and bodging things (not least playing with Arthurs toys) ahead of taking a fairly outrageous months holiday in France. I will try to make a bit of time to do things a bit more proper in September (although the dreaded 31 January deadline looms...). Your "bitsa" is a lovely looking dog too. Wonderful he has found a loving home. Keisha in the front is from GSD rescue - we picked her up at 4 months with an aggression problem that had led the behavioral advisers (2 of them) referred by the vet to conclude there was no choice but to have her put down. You cannot imagine a soppier, happier, more loving dog. I do hope those advisers found another career :steam:

Thats ruby.
Although technicaly a lurcher (well, longdog probably) she's from spain. She came over to the uk a month ago now after being found living on the streets of spain.
She's a podenco cross of some kind (podenco is a spanish sighthound). She's slowly settling in and learning to live in a house.
If you have a strong stomach, google podenco or galgo and see what happens to unwanted hunting dogs in spain :(.

Quick edit, our other dog (maeve) is a blue merle, 1/2 greyhound, 3/8 saluki and 1/8 collie. Doesnt listen to a word i say but is VERY quick!

The cats, we have a devon rex, a siamese, and a black mog who we have no pics of as he's never in!

He's a big lad for a Lurcher. Tall and quite sturdily built, he weighs in at 70 pounds. That's what makes me think there may be a bit of Borzoi in him, he's definitely got a Borzoi like mouth, a fair old set of gnashers.

The Devon Rex reminds me of my time at PT back at the old Sidcup factory. Neal had a Devon Rex (and a beautiful Lilac) and the Rex had kittens which lived at the factory. You would be working at your desk and this kitten would land in the middle of your lap - like a wierd alien being from another planet. They used to huddle behind the boiler at night, and when it fired up in the morning it singed their whiskers (its ok - they weren't seriously hurt).

But he also had a 6 foot rat snake which he kept in a vivarium in the listening room. Completely harmless constrictor - you needed to be wary if you were a hamster, but not a human. At the time we had the stacked quad esl57's as the reference speakers, in a large high ceiliinged room with surprisingly good acoustics. It was however, a room in a light industrial unit, and had a big pair of steel fire doors leading out to the car park facing south. So they got really warm, and in the winter, if allowed out, the snake would bask on these doors.

I remember one day being busy, and showing some punters into the listening room whilst I went to make them a coffee, forgetting the snake was out. I returned to find the snake basking on its doors, and the punters pinned against the opposite wall.
Happy days ...:)

Hes not looking to bad that pic was taken back in feb, Hes back legs have gone a bit wobbly but he can still get about just has trouble getting off things and lands a bit awkward but he still enjoys life and isn't showing any signs of being in pain. hes been sleeping on the bench in the garden all this week and staying there all night as well!

Just a heads up , had a little scare with our cat sky the other day ; the flowers you see to her right are a derivative of the Lilly family and she had a good chomp on them , after some quick googling and an emergency trip to the vet all was ok , luckily the flower pictured isn't a true Lilly , if it was it could have destroyed her kidneys and probably killed her.

There's a lot to know with regard to cats ( and dogs ) and its really surprising what can harm them ( anything in the onion family , ANY essential oil , tea tree , etc etc )

But she's fine now. Enjoying the thread :)

Don't get me going...... it's pretty bad in this country and Ireland too :steam:

Greyhounds, lurchers, whippets, salukis, galgo's and all sight hounds are such lovely creatures and soo misunderstood. I had a gorgeous whippet for 14 lovely years and like most sight hounds they are the most gentle and loving animals you could ever have, clean too, a bit like a cat in some ways

I love cats too, well i like all animals really. The only thing that's stopped me getting another is the massive heart ache of loosing them :(

This is Bonnie - I have just picked her up from her 1st treatment of radiotherapy because she has/had tongue cancer. They operated on her and removed the mass with good margings so they are hopeful that she will be ok after her radiotherapy.

The thing is that we had 2 cats, Bonnie who has tongue cancer which we found out about in May 2013 and Holly who died of jaw cancer in April 2013. We found out about Holly just before Christmas but sadly there was nothing they could do for her so we had her put to sleep in April. Two weeks later we found out about Bonnie which was a massive blow to us but so far the little rascal is doing ok :D

Here is the latest member of our family. Her name is Pepper and she is just four years old and a rescue dog. Unbelievably her previous owners beat her because they say she is badly behaved. Strange then that from the moment she stepped through our door she has been one of the best behaved dogs I've come across. She is small even for a Jack, being only the size of a domestic moggy, so the thought of her being beaten makes my blood boil. Anyway, now is her 15 minutes of fame so here are a couple of pics...

Thanks Graham but it really is no hardship, she is a wonderful little lady. My missus made friends with an amazing local woman called Laney who runs an animal rescue group on FB and we were fostering Pepper for her while she was trying to find her a new home. In the meantime Laney was trying to find a suitable dog for us (I have a stepson who is autistic amongst other things) and I wasn't keen on having a Jack initially, until I got to know Pepper. I've had Jacks before and they can be a bit boisterous but Pepper is nothing like that, she's very calm and gentle and she has really taken to the kids, especially my stepson. It's as if she understands his condition ;)

That's the first time I've seen a cat that has to be as big as my long departed 'Boy'. He was huge ginger and white tabby. Laying down with his paws stretched out he measured four feet long. There wasn't a crap of fat on him, but he had the musculature of a Doberman and weighed nearly forty pounds. Very badly missed.

40 lbs :0 , are you sure someone didn't sell you a lynx by mistake :0 , Skys barley 4kg lol

Thanks for throwing that pic up walps , he really was a bruiser wasn't he. I can see what you mean about him being big but not fat , you can really see muscle mass around his shoulder and hip area. Awesome looking cat

Bella is a new addition to our household. She is a Shar Pei and is just 8 months old. Her previous owners not only starved her but beat her too. How anyone could do this to a young lady with such a loving temperament is utterly beyond me. We were fostering her initially for our local dog rescue charity but we have utterly fallen in love with her. How could you not fall in love with that face?

We had a tabby like that once - his name believe it or not was Slug! He'd bring rabbits into the kitchen through his cat flap during the night & eat the lot except for one front leg and about 4 inches of large intestine - weird!
I got home from work once to find him curled up on the sofa with a proud look on his face. Proud because, laid out in the middle of the rug was a massive but very dead weasel.

Guinea Pigs - Yikes!
We lived in an old house and we got Slugger to the catch mice. He got a bit mixed up - started bring frogs in when he was a kitten and moved straight on to rabbits. I don't think he ever caught a mouse in his entire life!

However, our cats are more 'house cats' than anything else, groomed (and spoiled) to be purely pets from when they were kittens. They only get out to 'play' for a few hours each day in our garden, in largely urban surroundings, and never at night. They're also extremely pampered and well-fed (on all the best cat food), and so I guess that they feel no real compulsion to hunt for food in the short time they are allowed outside.

Perhaps that might explain the lack of 'free meals' being delivered on our carpet? :)

Sounds like a good situation.

Our two are also fed on high quality cat food and kept in at night, however they are free to come and go during the day. The female basically kills anything that moves, including mice, voles, shrews and, sadly, baby rabbits - on two occasions I've come home to find the rear legs and the white fluffy tail of what used to be a rabbit sat on the kitchen floor. I've also seen her have a go at a squirrel on the bird table and very nearly succeed in catching it!

The male will occasionally bring a mouse home but is generally less interested in these sort of animals - very often when he does bring a mouse in, it is still alive and unharmed so I catch and release it. However, he is completely obsessed with birds. During the course of a morning he once killed and brought in an entire nest full of adult and baby sparrows and I then caught him trying to drag the actual nest through the cat flap! Unfortunately we do live out in the wilds of the countryside completely surrounded by fields, meadows and woods so I don't suppose all this is likely to stop any time soon!

Now if only I could persuade one of them to have a crack at the pheasant that often wanders into the garden...:eyebrows:

Thats Freyja, she was a beautiful Russian blue X Birman. She came to an untimely end about 4 months ago due to 'boy racers' using the lane as a race track... She left behind 6 one week old kittens too :(

We hand reared them all summer and thankfully they all survived & are now at happy new homes [apart from the cutest one which we kept ! I'll have to take a piccy.]

This is Clio. She arrived 2 or so years ago. The story goes like this and this is absolutely true...
Decided to go to lunch in town, walked into the barn and could hear odd animal noises, looked around and found nothing. Drove into town, had lunch, dropped the boys off at the swimming pool and drove home. Pulled into the barn and could hear the noises again. Looked around and realised the noises were coming from the car. Looked in the engine bay, in the wheel arches and found nothing. The noise seemed to be moving from front to back so we looked inside the car.... Finally we realised there was a creature in the bit where the exhaust goes down the middle of the car. Enticed it out and there you go. She'd obviously been dumped at the side of the road and found her way into the barn...looked around and no siblings. We assume that she was underneath the car on the journey into town and is very luck not to have fallen out....she would have been Clio Lane then and not just Clio (we had a Renault CLio at the time). We were all madly allergic to her to start with but took antihistamines and we now seem to have desinsitised to her. She rules the roost with an iron fist!!

He's not allowed in the house but has a nice warm house/bed in the back porch. He just turned up from the farm up the hill and never left. He never shuts up!

I have a theory about allergies that I've convinced myself will be proven one day....I reckon you can catch allergies from other people. I was never allergic to anything then started knocking around with a guy who was allergic to everything....I get allergies. Now, I'm allergic to chocolate which I know sounds odd -I don't swell up like a balloon (though I do resemble a balloon from certain angles most of the time) or anything, I just have violent sneezing fits and Mrs HP has developed (only in the last few months) exactly the same reaction to the same types of chocolate.

He can't come in the house I'm sorry to say. Mrs HP comes out in a very nasty rash if she touches him. In the summer he gets bathed and washed but she has to double up on antihistamines and wear rubber gloves...oh, and the black beast pictured previously would "have him"! He is sort of inside in the porch with a nice little house built for him with lots of nice warm bedding...

I don't use Image Shack and never have - has Jerry got an account with them? If he has that might be why he can see your piccy.

Here is our new family member, a lovely natured 2 1/2 year old boy called Tigger…

We got him from the Cats Protection a couple of weeks ago after falling in love with him on an their Facebook page…

He certainly lives up to his name… bouncy is an understatement but he is rather fetching :)… the other two aren't fans but hey, he doesn't seem too bothered :)

Her borther Roger, the cat formerly known has Ginger Rogers, originally known as Little Ginge! He's reinvented himself more times than Madonna.

And finally, Shadow - their younger Uncle! So called because for 2 months he was just a blur as he scarpered away from the food on site of humans. Shadow is ahem special - he has many extra toes and he's as mad as a hatter, next for the vets.

We moved onto a small holding last summer and the farm cats came with the package, we lost some kittens to foxes and one of the toms moved on, so I'm left working through neutering and taming these remaining three, they've literally torn my hands to shreds but I've had good success, all three settled into the boot room together. Unfortunately their mother's are now in their 20's, they're both pretty feral e.g. can't touch/get within a metre of them and we doubt they would survive trapping, visit to vets and recovery time in captivity. So I've committed to keeping on dealing with their offspring.

So, does this make me the cat lady of AOS?

Yes he most definitely is, as is his Mother. He's still very skittish so I have struggled to count them up, he never sits still. He has 5 toes on each paw at the back and 7 or 8 on each at the front, it looks like he's wearing mittens.

He's learning to interact with me, so treats me to playful swipes and biting it's quite alarming when he flexes his claws.

Feeling gutted, lost Roger (ginger tom on page 20) to a car last Friday :(. I found him in lying in the road. Tamed him from feral and have scarred hands to show for it, he was just one year old. He loved nibbling toes, catching mice, bossing the other kits, playing in the apple trees, helping with the cooking, and curling up in front of the fire. We miss him dearly.

I'm really sorry to hear about Roger. Losing a much loved pet, especially in those circumstances, is always a horrible thing. Perhaps in due course, it's an opportunity to give another wee moggie the chance of having a loving home?

We have two house bunnies, they have free run of the room in the day. they pretty much litter trained themselves, we just put the tray down and they started using it. They make great house pets as they are so cute and friendly, they come and jump all over you when you go in and sit with them.

My poor old pooch is in the vet's at the moment. He got a thorn or splinter in a back foot about three weeks ago and it's had an abscess ever since. He's had several visits to the vet, but it hasn't healed, so he's having investigative surgery right now and the affected area will be cleaned out. Hopefully he should be able to come home later today. The bills are mounting, but I don't begrudge him. He's a sweet old chap.

Vet bills are pretty scary. We took the bunnies to get their lady bits done and it was £200, all I could think was I do love them but that is a nice pile of vinyl :)

Yup. I've had Tippy the Lurcher just under two years and so far he's cost me about £700 in vet bills. Not cheap to care properly for a pet these days. I spend a lot of time in the West Country and I've noticed charges there are quite a bit lower than here in London.

Her name is Mishu, but she was also given the nickname Pow Meow from a few of the younger family members. She was originally a street cat; found her as a toddler when she decided to peek her head into the house when I was doing the laundry years ago. Mishu is quite old now, but that doesn't stop how energetic and lively she is. She loves to play, and she keeps herself extremely clean. Many visitors quickly fall in love with her due to how accepting and playful she is. She loves people, which I've never seen in a cat before. Most shy away from people, she's quite the opposite. I definitely love her very much!

Sorry to say that we lost our little boy a couple of weeks ago... he was run over... such a shame as we have recently got a new kitten (Winni) who had been getting on with him so well.... real shame and big loss to our family.

Really sorry to hear that Paul. My avatar is our very loved Bonnie that we "lost" in the summer. It was all rather tragic as she woke up from under my car having heard (and recognised as cats seem to do) our daughters car and in her semi-awake state walked under the front wheels as she was reversing out of the drive. Traumatic in the extreme for all concerned especially Katherine our daughter.

Wow Rob I am really sorry to hear that... it is funny how close you get to animals, irrelevant whether they are a cat.. dog... Tigger was such a big part of our family and now is gone... I am sure you understand with Bonnie!

One very unhappy Orange.fr:(

he came in last night, had his dinner as normal and then settled in his usual place on the sofa. Suddenly noticed he was shaking. Bit of a shock to see half the flesh on his leg exposed, obviously a bit of delayed shock.

Straight to the vet and he was kept in overnight. Good thing I had just sold the REL as the bill used up most of the sale price:eek:

He is going to be a bit upset with the collar, watching him trying to back away from it is rather funny. Poor old lad, a couple of weeks at least until the stitches come out. He won't be going out either which will frustrate him hugely.
