Sad to say the old boy went for the great catnap in the sky yesterday.
We came home and put away the blanket and food bowls which was very sad. Waking up to a house without a cat in it was very strange this morning as any cat owner will tell you, they won't let you get on with your day until they're fed.
Already looking at the cats protection league website to adopt another friend.
That's shame but I'm sure he had a long and happy innings. After mine went the bowls stayed for about 6 months, couldn't bring myself to clear them away.

Thats sad, I feel for you Rich. Still miss my old friends over the years. However the Cats Protection is a good idea, might help to soften the blow a little and there's always a moggy in need of some love and warmth there.

Sorry to hear that Rich. Mine died a few years ago now and wasnt replaced. I had her for over 20 years and had few complaints. Difficult to look after an animal now so dont have one.

I know a couple of people whose cats like to watch wildlife docs, one leaves the telly on the Animal Planet channel for him when she is out at work.
I think the cats assume that these large screen tellys are just another window to look out of.

Border terrier... still got her winter coat. Due to be stripped out next month. They are working dogs really but have fantastic temperaments. Great with kids etc. Although they love to be out running all day, they can be happy indoors a lot too.

Looks a sweet little dog. My pooch and I bumped into a couple of small terriers yesterday. He never knows what to make of them, 'cos they run around him fast and he's about five times the size and pretty placid (unless the doorbell goes :)).
They are softies really, but have their tough side. Brave as a lion and sneaky t'boot. Shawn used to beat up big Alsatians...he went for the groin lol. Fast of foot and massive stamina too. Run all day.

No. I don't know his history, as he's a rehomed/rescued dog. But because of his size and stance, I reckon he's maybe half Border Collie and half Borzoi. He has the dappling of a Borzoi here and there.

Cheeky Soxx the stray that has been living with us for three years now having been abandoned at a house near to where we used to live
The woman that had him as a kitten decided to move house and just leave him. He was around two at the time
He started watching Sue my other half doing the gardening and I noticed he was very thin so I fed him Whiska's pouches

We have been in a new house for the past year but we didn't abandon him, he came with us. Naturally he is very clingy and insecure
We absolutely adore him

Oh yes Martin if Sue and I go out for a few hours and leave Soxx in the house when we get back he chastises us..! Then he is all clingy again for a while. Absolutely love him to bits...!

That seemed to stop his sulks, I suppose because he could go out and find other cats for company. He would always be waiting for me when I got in though. First thing I would do is light the fire whilst he would sit behind me on the coffee table whacking me on the back with his paw because of course my first priority should be to feed him, the fire lighting should have been a secondary task.
My lass just gave me a dirty look followed by the cold shoulder for an hr or so...typical woman.....til she wanted summat, then was all loveydovey :eyebrows:

Yeah sadly we live in a rented house so cat doors are out of the question. We are at home a lot of the time though as I am kind of semi retired these days and he gets to go out when he wants to. It's just if we go for a drive around for a few hours he lets us know when we get back. He is also making his mark on the new territory with the other cats. Also, he always wants Sue and I to be there together for him not separately. He has now gone through the biting and scratching stage but he is just so vocal all of the time. He and I have the most amazing conversations in which I am sure he fully understands me even though I don't him.
When I play music he sits and listens on the arm of the chair but only if it is Eno-esque ambient stuff. Anything raucous and he mooches away somewhere else. I dare not play vinyl with him in the room though however, he does know that that room is not his...! He understands the word NO.
Mine rarely spoke but as you say they understand perfectly what you are saying to them.

Yep you don't own a cat, that whole concept is wrong. Nor are they 'pets'. It's a wild animal with its own agenda that you invite into your home; after that they take over!
Indeed, which is why we love them (their aloofness and independence). Dogs are too subservient and demanding, especially those yappy, slobbery little bastards.
Don't get me wrong, I like dogs, but only something chilled-out and 'low maintenance', like a nice labrador.

A friends cats managed to break into a locked pantry, locate a box of pouches, open it and scoff five of them. She still has no idea how they were able to open the pantry door, but they had all night to figure it out I guess.
Better than that a work colleague has a parrot that has figured out how to unlock its cage from the inside. Whilst it is breaking free it sings the theme tune from 'The Great Escape.' I'm not making it up. They bought an escape-proof cage but the bird refuses to enter it.

One of ours (Emrys, a long-haired ginger tom), slashes open food pouches and packets of biscuits with his claws - and rather deftly too, like Zorro! When left alone for a period of time, HE decides if we've left out enough food or not, and if not, simply helps himself to more! Quality :)

Mine came from a strict Teutonic household where he was not allowed on the furniture, in the bedrooms and so forth. Took him a while to get used to the idea that he could do whatever he wanted.
So it wasn't a kitten when you got it? We get all our cats, as young as possible (usually only a few weeks old) from the local Cat Protection League, and then from day one, 'train' it, as much as one can a cat, to adjust to our surroundings and lifestyle.
As we always have three cats in the house, when one eventually dies, we simply replace it with another of the same type (either black and white, tortoiseshell or ginger, as we like their different personalities), and so the new one has two mates to play and grow up with.
Plus, giving a new home to another stray kitten seems the fitting thing to do, helps us deal with our loss, and thus turns a negative into a positive! :cool:

They have each been a joy to have around. My current pooch 'Tippy the Lurcher' was estimated to be about eight years old when he arrived and has been with me five years. He's incredibly well behaved and sweet. He may be getting older now, but is very healthy.

Nice one, Geoff. It's always worthwhile giving any stray dog or cat a new home.
With cats, we prefer getting them as kittens (as kittens are *so* cute) and as young as possible. That way we can, as far as possible, instil our habits/way of life into them, so that they become 'ours', as opposed to us looking after what has essentially already become someone else's pet, thus formed its own habits - if you get me?
It's rather like adopting kids. If we were ever to do that, we'd always go for a baby (as young as possible), rather than a child or teenager, for the same reasons :)

Poor little things, foxes are devious buggers.
Ours have their own room in the house, it's furnished with chairs and a table and they have the run of it, we just go in to feed them, tidy up and for a cwtch, they couldn't be more pampered. :)
I suppose they are a bit like cats, only without the little Freddy Kruger knives.
I appreciate to most people they are just rabbits, but we love them :)
We love them too, bit where my family come from in Tuscany, we eat them, not keep them as pets! ;)

Guinea Pig is a delicacy in many countries. S America and Australia for start. I Loved my guinea pig and he seemed happy although many say you should keep in pairs.
Lol... It's just that in Tuscany, in particular, they eat more rabbit than chicken!

They can be viscious little buggers, luckily both of ours are friendly and don't mind an occassional cuddle. But then they are so pampered they have nothing to be stroppy about :)

Yep, they were at the time of the photos.
Ginger (Bobo) is now fully integrated and friendly, and brown & white (Rowlie) is slowly getting there.

Mine did the same when I first got him, about a week behind the couch. Then one day I had a friend around, we were chatting and out he came, purring away. The trick, I found, is just to leave them to it, don't bother them or try and coax them out. At some point they seem to realise the environment is safe. Funny things, cats.

Oh yes, been there with the moulting cats, fortunately Mia sheds very little fur even when the weather is hot. All my cats have been rescues, I'd much rather give the shelters my money than finance a greedy breeder.

I've never noticed cats really take an interest in the television until these big, flat screens came out. Friend showed me a picture she had taken clandestinely of the cat sat upright in an otherwise empty living room, right in front of the telly, watching zebras running across the veldt. Since learning this her husband now insists on leaving the television on for the cat when they go out.
Good point, Martin. Our three cats sit mesmerised in front of the TV, whenever a nature programme is on, especially the recent BBC one Big Cats!
I put that down to the superior resolution of today's UHD flat screen TVs, which just make everything look so much more lifelike :)

A little white stray got knocked down just along from my house the other day. Ive seen it a few times in my garden in last few weeks. think it had multiple fractures but was alive. A neighbour too it to vet but have not heard outcome. probably not good....shame

It is said we invest the same sort of love and care in our pets as we do in our children. I don't have children but I think I understand what that means. I love my little Mia dearly and will be devastated when she leaves me, some people say she's only a cat and you can get another one, they really don't understand. In their life times we give our pets all the love and care we can and they give us unconditional love and they don't judge us, unlike people.
I'm so sorry for your loss Geoff and anyone who loses a beloved companion, they leave a massive, gaping hole behind them.

Yep, Tiddles watched the turkey or chicken go in the oven, then waited!
My little Mia isn't interested in fresh food at all, chicken, fish or anything dairy like milk or cheese. She loves her pouches of Felix and Gourmet cat soup plus Purina One biscuits. Makes feeding her easy at least.

Brilliant idea, visible from a distance. My brother and his wife visited Cat Island during their holiday to Japan this year, they are cat fanatics but found that real cats living wild are nothing like a pet cat. Neutering makes a lot of sense in feral cats.

I've 2 cats which are getting up there in age now. The first is Eddie who is now 11, these 2 pics are a year old but he still looks like a young'un if you ask me. He has extra feet on both his front and rear paws, his rear feet look like a rabbits, will have to get some pics of those to post. We had the option to have the extras surgically removed if he had trouble but he has been fine and runs around like a maniac most mornings. He's not one for fuss, if he wants it he will come to you, plus he is very shy around new people.

Then we have Oscar who is 10. He is a very needy cat and is very vocal, he likes a lot of fuss and attention. He is definitely not shy around people and really craves attention. He has his own pillow which he has taken a shine to and sleeps on most nights.

The thing that some people don't understand is that they all have their own very unique personalities, just like us. I'm not looking forward to the day my 2 leave us but I hope they still have a number of years left yet, I know some cats can live to over 15 years or even upto 20 if lucky.

I had a black cat years ago. Found her as a stray kitten on my doorstep one night. Nobody local had lost one, so we assumed she was a feral stray, there were a few about at the time.
She trotted into the house and stayed there for about twelve years until she died of an infection. We named her Lucky (well black cats are supposed to be lucky), but she ended up being called Fang or Beastly, 'cos she'd take no nonsense! She was very affectionate, but simply would not be told what to do and responded fiercely if shooed away. :)

Yeah, think I've heard the vet mention that name before. It doesn't seem to bother him, he functions as any cat would, running around and climbing fences and trees. When he was a kitten he would climb up the wall as we had wallpaper which he could cling too, made a real mess of it lol. The only problem is that some of the extra claws don't get ground down like normal so we take him to get them trimmed every 4 months so they don't get too long. The vets have mentioned he could get arthritis in those when he gets older which is a little worrying.
some chickens get it too.

I've also kept marines but that was a whole different level both in financial terms and time required to keep everything in check. Don't think I'll ever go back there again although retirement might change my mind. I'll post a pic of that up if anyone's interested?

Love the late Mrs Tiddles. They make everything theirs don't they.
My little Mia has fallen in love with my turntable and spends many hours "guarding" it. Fortunately I've got an old dust cover for it so the good one remains scratch free.

She's a sweetie, she's around 6 years old but not exactly sure. I got her from the RSPCA in January 2016, she's an indoor cat, her original owner kept her in because of busy roads etc so Mia has very little sense of danger. She likes sitting in the sun by the French doors and staring at birds through the window. She seems happy enough so I leave her to it.

Oh no doubt about that, he bosses our older cat about to the point where we have to feed them separately otherwise he eats both meals! He is in no way afraid of our lumpy old staffy either.

You can tell he's got a bit about him. Used to be one like that who used to come and visit me. Wander in bold as brass, jump up for a fuss, do a quick tour of inspection and then go and have a kip upstairs. Just used to leave him to it.

We have had Bruce for about 6 years now, picked him up from a local rescue initially to foster for a few weeks as I wasn't sure about him. My wife really liked the look of him tho so he came home with us. He's still he now, much to my wife's annoyance he's "my" dog, follows me everywhere etc.
3 years ago he ruptured his knee joint and as we didn't have pet insurance we had to find best part of £3k for his operation. The late Tiddles enjoyed cardboard boxes too, and yes, she too was buried in one. I won't post the pic.
But I'll look for the ones of her in LS3/6 boxes when I was rebuilding them, I've probably posted them before.

We were a little swayed by the reputation of Staffies when our daughter first got Roxy.We were wrong.We took her for a walk one day,took her back with -give us first chance if you decide to let her go,not long after she came for a "holiday",end result is I'm bottom of the food chain in our house and further down the pecking order.Glad Bruce is o.k ,I fully understand your thinking re vets costs.Worth it for a lifetime of faith and trust they give us

Tiddles was definitely a cat, but she had some dog like tendencies, she'd often follow me down to the local shops, wait till I came out, and come home with me.
