Pet Hates.

I expect this has been done here before, but I'll give it a bash anyway.

What drives you up the wall, what's incredibly annoying, etc. Here goes with a few of mine.

In the home:

Cushions, why do women have an obssesion with putting loads of cushions all over chairs and sofas that are ergonomically designed to be used as is.

Driving:

Why do some drivers stop at roundabouts and wait until somebody comes along that they can give way to?

Being passed on the inside by some twat using an active bus lane.

At work:

Being emailed by an idiot who sits ten feet away and hasn't got the manners to come and speak to me.

Hype, jargon and plain bad English. Terms like "window of opportunity" and "at the end of the day" And, a word I really, really hate "confidentiality", things are done in confidence or are confidential. This horrible word "confidentiality" was imported into this country from America by Tory MP Gerald Navarro back in the sixties and he was ridiculed at the time, unfortunately it stuck!

The above are just a few of my niggles. Anybody out there with more?

I nag her and her mother, who is an english teacher, nags her. Drives us both mad.

Absolutely, its another rubbish Americanism that's sneaked into everyday so called English.

The Grand Wazoo
05-11-2012, 23:01
It's not that its at all, it's it's!

Surely it's is correct - the apostrophe denotes the missing letter i as in it is

From The Apostrophe Appreciation Society Website (http://www.apostrophe.org.uk/page2.html)

The rules concerning the use of apostrophes in written English are very simple:

1. They are used to denote a missing letter or letters, for example:

I can't instead of I cannot
I don't instead of I do not
it's instead of it is or it has

2.........

walpurgis
05-11-2012, 23:37
Actually, I think you can argue both cases, but 'its' is the posessive, as in belonging to or of and 'it's' is a contraction, the apostrophe indicates missing letters as in 'it has' and 'it is' according to the online Collins Dictionary, but I think common usage comes into play to an extent (and you can spell usage and useage both ways I believe). So it could be I was wrong, or it could still be Shane was wrong. Never mind, as long as we get our point across it matters little.

Self opinionated twats on other forums (of which I'm not a member and possibly wouldn't be allowed to be), knocking proper Tannoy dual concentrics, when by their own admission they've never heard a pair properly set up in an appropriate system and in a suitable environment.

Just to break the subject a tad but this has been bugging me.. I set the heating to switch on at 9:30PM last night, by the time i got in around 10:15PM, i was greeted by what sounded like i'd left the tap running!

Opening the bathroom door right there in front of me the toilet's pot cistern had split right down the front, water pissing all over..

I have no idea what had caused it but all i can think of is the heat in the small bathroom from the radiator Vs the freezing cold water in the cistern caused it to split.

Anyhoots fitted a new one this morning. Anyone ever encountered this before??

Another pronunciation one: the increasing trend of saying pryvacy rather than privacy.

Also, 'Lessons have been learned'. Bloody meaningless! Tell me exactly what you have learned and what you are doing to prevent mistakes happening again.

Oh, and DAB radio. 15 miles from Crystal Palace, and I can't receive a single station. If I could receive it, I would lose Radio Kent which I can receive just by pointing the ariel on my Roberts radio in a slightly different direction. But I would gain the World Service, R5Live and R4LW. I miss the world service. However, I'd lose all those shortwave stations... nothing like Radio Netherlands on a Sunday lunchtime.

I once lived in the wing of a castle in Cumbria - it had a useless heating system and the walls were about 4' thick sandstone. My bedroom had an en-suite that had previously been a sort of small round turret that was built onto the corner of the building. This meant that the room had 270 degrees of external walls. In mid-winter, my toothpaste used to have ice crystals in it!

Had a go the other night at some knob driving like a lunatic in the works car park. Nearly ran me and a couple of birds down. I called him a fucking idiot and he gave me a bit of a look. Now found out he is the boyfriend of a work colleague and has just completed second tour in Afghanistan. Oops...

If he doesn't like being called a fucking idiot then he shouldn't be driving like one.

Nothing drives me up the wall more than listening to someone who constantly uses "errrrrrr" and "ummmm" when talking, because what they are trying to say could easily be spat out in less than half the time and probably be three times more interesting to boot. Young females in particular who produce an endless chain of "ummmmm"s into their speech has often prompted me reaching for an imaginary baseball bat with the mental picture of stoving their heads in with it :steam: I reckon the annual Lobotomy Club's outing would entertain and inform me more. That's a coincidence Andr'e. That's how I got mine. I came home one evening to find her sitting on the doorstep. She was only about six inches long and obviously only a few weeks old. Not only does my cat understand every word I say to him he also can talk back in 'cat' and I understand him.

That sounds pretty crazy reading it back but it is true.

Years ago now we had a cat called Smudge who we took in as a stray or rather our tom cat did. He was a killer and very smart. Had some friends over and we were sat in the kitchen and one of them says 'hey the cat wants to come in' and there he was at the patio door waiting patiently. So I stand up to let him in and say 'listen to the cat say thank you when I let him in' to which I received howls of derison. I open the door, in comes the cat and as I knew he would he emits a loud 'Barooo!' - I have never seen people so stunned.

One of my all time No.1's is Dog crap on the coarseway!

All dogs should be registered & chip implanted, DNA sample taken, if anyone fails to do this, hit them with a bigger fine than they could imagine.. Make a database, employ people to go around taking samples from Dog crap, test for their DNA against the database, again a massive fine + take the owner to clean it up. If any Dog appears not to be on the database because the owner failed to register, log the sample in the same fashion the police would do a missing person.

But think about the poor person employed for this mission Andre:

Me neither, usually covered in eBay tat she's trying to sell to make room for the eBay tat that just came through the post. I'd use the other sofa, but that's strewn with washing that's waiting to be folded 'cos she hasn't got time - selling her eBay tat... If she just got on with the washing and ironing like a good little wife there'd be no problem.

(And I hope to God she doesn't read this or it's curtains for me! ;) )

This thread seems to have bifurcated into the lexicological and the scatological.

First the lexicological – well my pet hate is the creeping Americanisation of the English language, especially their penchant for using nouns as verbs, for example: ‘To author a book and then critique another one ’. Why not say ‘To write a book and then write a critique of another one’. Saves time you might think, but not when everybody is interjecting his or her speech with unnecessary “likes”, a pet hate that has already been cited.

And the scatological? Well that would be those ‘floaters’ that stubbornly refuse to go away after two or three flushes. (Yes, I do know what to do about it, but it still annoys me.)

One that particularly irritates me is 'transportation'. What was wrong with 'transport'?

In my home town of 'artlepool there is something called a 'transport interchange'. Bus station, apparently, though I've never actually seen a bus in there

The answer?

'Because he's a cowboy.'

Ask a silly question, etc.

What do you think goes on in the average restaurant kitchen, Chinese takeaway, kebab shop etc etc. burgers with horse meat is the less worrying of the shit they put in them and sausages (yes I eat them all). Every time I go out training on my bike I risk my life because of terrible drivers. I still go out. I've run up Hellvellyn in a blizzard and I've come down Alps on my bike at over 100kph. Life is for living and enjoying. Unfortunately it isn't risk free. I'll take my chance with the dogs cos I could get killed on my bike tomorrow or find out next week I've got cancer. My misses has been in nursing for over 30 years and I take my lead from her: Live each day like its going to be your last. Because one day you'll be right.

We have a cat (and had two). No hifi problems with either, which is more than can be said for our children when they were nippers.

But I don't let the cat lick my face.

I wouldn't let a cat lick my face cos I don't like cats.

How about the 'low life' who call you around 6 - 7 in the evening with their tele-sales? Or even worse, those who start by asking how well you are today, and then proceed to tell you that they (from somewhere in Bombay ) have noticed that they have 'received notification' that your computer is under attack, or that it has logged up several 'warnings or errors'!

I, politely tell them to "sod off"!

No that's just a bit of fun, more those that put their dogs in sparkly collars and matching little coats, or those who dye their poodles pink. That's the sort of thing I mean. :steam: It makes my blood boil. Those little pets look miserable half the time.

I agree with the licking thing, cats and dogs have an antibac on their tongues which stops them from getting sick when they clean themselves, but that antibac does not work on us. Dom thinks I'm weird, because I have 5 different clothes in the kitchen and some are for the cats and some are for us, never the twain shall meet lol. I know a bit Ott, but I would rather be a bit paranoid about the cats than catch something ;) But I still love them to bits.
