Not sure that's really the point - sure, it's tedious and cheesy, but watching those poor little babies on the brink of death from malaria had me in tears and I've only been watching for 15 minutes! £5 pays for a net to keep them safe at night. Get your credit card out you miserable bastard! ;)

Alex, the sight of anyone suffering on a news report is enough for me to give money to charity. I don't expect to be entertained to hand my money over. In fact, the whole concept of entertainment in return for charity makes me very uncomfortable indeed. Especially the shite that gets peddled on Comic Relief. I would gladly pay money not to see it. ;)

WE have some new ones - they are so loud it sounds like a Lightning taking off - in fact just the other day I was wondering how that is legal in the workplace without hearing protection being issued? I use the paper towels meself. I notice quite a few other people don't bother to wash their hands at all so I guess not a major issue for them...

I'll tell you what I'm utterly fed up with and that's the Santander advertising featuring various sporting celebs. It is so painfully devoid of any creativity and utterly patronising to us all. If you are lucky enough to be able to pay huge sums of money to such people, for God's sake do something interesting with the advertising!

On another occasion I saw that someone was parked in front of my garage. :steam: So I went down to see who it was, went up to the window, to see a young chap banging the life out of this chick. I calmly knocked on the window and asked them to move the car so I could get into my garage - I didn't need to but just wanted to interrupt their "fun". I once had a whole heap of stuff dumped in a gateway of a forest I used to manage in South Yorks. Probably well over a tonne of it. We went through it to find out if we could discover any clues as to its ownership. Finding quite a lot of stuff, I thought we had them good and proper!
There were kids schoolbooks with names and addresses, letters, family photos, all sorts of incriminating evidence including even the front door of the house with the same number as the one on the addressed stuff.
I called the Police, who came round and took copious notes and went away saying they'd be calling round to the house that evening and were confident that there could be a prosecution.
I called the next day to find out what had happened and was told that the owners of all this crap had said that, yes, it was indeed their stuff but they didn't put it there and didn't know quite how it had got there. I was then told that the Police could do no more about it and that it was my responsibility to remove this crap and I should do so quickly because it might represent a health and safety hazard.
We put it all onto a trailer and found somewhere.....ahem......'suitable' to dump it. The tractor made a hell of a mess of the garden with its big tyres - a bit of a pity that.
walpurgis
20-03-2013, 19:12
Nice! Sounds like the kind of response I'd make.
I've got a very serious fly tipping problem by my house, old beds, furniture, black bags etc., all up against garden fences (not mine) and it's my pigs of neighbours who are dumping it anyway. The Council has been told. The Landowner does nothing. The Fire Service have been told of the fire hazard. No action taken, I'm sure this lot will be catching fire one night very soon. I imagine it will create chaos.
Great story, Chris! :) Pisser of a story, Geoff! :(

I know of someone else who managed the woodland at a very well known private estate, who had a similar fly-tipping episode to me. His answer was that he procured a pigs carcass and allowed it to decompose to a rather advanced, swollen and unpleasant condition and took it.....carefully.....to the house of the offender with what we call a forwarder - a forestry timber trailer with a crane. It was then dropped onto the garden from the height of the full reach of the crane.
Apparently, the ensuing explosion was something to behold!
Note to self: Don't ever upset Chris or his mates!
Mind you, now that we know to look for bloody great tyre tracks going up to our house...

I never was much of a one for Thunderbirds or any of that stuff really, but that is pretty good Martin! I wonder when that episode was made? In real life, they were tinkering with mechanised timber harvesting quite a long time ago, so I wonder if it's real life mirroring art or the other way around.
Even now though, we haven't found a way to convert trees to paper pulp in the wood!

What is it with ebayers who won't post items because they are "heavy"?
I wanted a tiny pair of bookshelf speakers but the seller refused to send on this basis.
And what does it matter whether an item is light or heavy? Both require packing and a trip to the post-office and the cost of sending either item is paid for by the buyer!

I had a strange one the other day, well it wasnt strange cos i kew what his game was with the high postage. I won an amp but only wanted the control knobs, the rest of the amp needed skipping by the looks of it condition wise. He would not just post the knobs.
Basically what the hell difference would it make just posting the knobs especially with the amp finishing at around a fiver, i know what i'd rather do.
Obvious answer is? Answers on a postcard.

People who don't leave feedback on eBay.. wankers!
Have you earned any? I sometimes don't leave feedback if I'm not entirely happy!
I ban people from buying from me if they don't leave feedback. The way I see it, if they can't be arsed to communicate with me then I don't want them as customers. I also get pissed at sellers who don't leave feedback, I won't buy from them again...
Really? If you've got zero feedback then I can understand why you might loose sleep over it, but once you've reached over about 10 does anyone really care? I think I'm hundreds light, over the course of the last 13 years, but I doubt anyone looks at my feedback and would worry about it?
Feedback is what keeps ebay running smoothly Alex. I wouldn't mind but it only takes a few seconds to leave feedback and it is also a courteous thing to do. Good service and a good response to a sale can help to generate repeat business. Also, when I have been pleased with my purchase and the service from the seller I like to give them their due. Likewise, if I am not happy with a transaction I will message the seller to give them the opportunity to put things right. I have never needed to leave negative or neutral feedback since opening my ebay account in 2006.
I completely agree, Dave - but it is all relative. As a buyer, I don't have the time to go into the detail of a seller's feedback - I make a judgement call on their overall feedback score. If someone has more than 10 and 100% positive, I doubt I would be worried about investigating it further, and equally if I am selling something, I would be highly surprised if anyone was worried that my nigh on 1000 positive feedback should really be 1200 if only people had left feedback. Unfortunately humans by nature are lazy and most won't inconvenience themselves if there's nothing in it for them! IMHO, obviously! ;)
Oddly I don't have quite the same loyalty towards Amazon's feedback system, but that is mainly because it is such a faff to use... :eyebrows:

This may have been said before, but: calls or texts from the vultures wanting to cash in on PPI mis-selling. If a call, I usually put the phone down very quietly and walk away letting them witter on to themselves. Occasionally I string 'em along for a bit then ask for their home phone number. If asked why I tell 'em its so I can waste their fcuking time later . . .

You reminded me of the old schoolboy trick of putting dog shit in a paper bag, twisting the top up, putting it on somebody's doorstep, lighting the top and ringing the doorbell? Then the occupant opens the door and tries to stamp out the flames, with the resulting shitty slippers.

Yeah plus one to that. One weekday morning I wandered down to the council office to pay them their extortion money. No-one else in there but the place stank like a decomposing horse. Next I went to the post office - again deserted but for the staff but the stench in there was so great I found I was involuntarily holding my breath. Exiting the post office I walked into town - it was not a warm day and there was a bit of a breeze but I could still smell this awful pong. Got onto the main street and it hit me like a wall - the source was some chubby old bloke - I could smell him from thirty yards away across the road!I had obviously been following in his footsteps all the way. Life is too short to spend all my time in the bathroom. I am fine with rinsing the hands after doing the one (or two) necessaries but all this washing all over stuff is terribly bad for you. Washes all the nice protecting oils and microbes off and leaves you with BO.
I have a nice shower on Sunday mornings and the occasional slosh when I fancy it.
However...........
.........I was born lucky. I hardly sweat at all and have never, ever suffered from even the tiniest trace of pong, even on the hottest days and have never used deodorant. Fortunately, my wife likes the feint aroma of wood shavings:lol:
I can understand the necessity for some folks though and can't stand the stench at times. I have upset one or two people with my suggestions about using something stronger
Now I think of it, there is one bit I tend to keep clean.

I feel a Clarkson moment coming on...while I agree with Marco that we really should make some effort to speak the local language, you've got to draw the line somewhere, and it's here.
I should add that I only have ever a fry up when I'm staying in an hotel but when you are paying good coin (especially your own) for something, you should get a brekker that puts hairs on your chest, not this croissants, cold cheese, ham, jam (for breakfast for heaven's sake) and yoghurt nonsense. I mean, I'm as liberal as the next man and all that but there is a limit: continental breakfast is just plain wrong. And there's never any Marmite or HP sauce around either...
I suppose in Italy, it is just about OK because an espresso or two and a fag or two are what I normally have to get going anyway (and the pastry cornetti tend to be rather nice - although they are sweets rather than food), but with the best will in the world it's really not a proper breakfast. And the weather's generally nice...Now instead, imagine stepping out onto a Brussels street with only some soapy tasting cheese and a bit of speck inside you...it's dismal. Not to mention having had to share the dining room with a bunch of German bankers who dress up specially in shell suits to eat, then put on proper clothes afterwards.
The Italians also make up for it with excellent lunch and dinner, wines, ice cream, shirts, ties, cars, leather goods etc. We can't expect them excel at everything, although think what their achievements might be with proper sausage, bacon, black pudding and eggs inside them first thing:).

That's probably because your thinking is largely controlled by the left side of your brain (organised and logical), whereas I'm a right-sided person (creative and emotional), and therefore possibly more adept at learning foreign languages and other 'artistic'-orentated tasks. My brain's not wired for maths/science or IT! ;)

Absolutely. If you are a hopeless left-brainer like me, you can train your right brain. I went from not being able to draw at all (real primary school stuff) to producing sketches which have my kids hailing me as a great artist (its all relative). It also helps for things like golf and tennis (must remember that on Sunday).
There is a good book, relating to learning to use the right brain to be able to draw called "Drawing on the right side of the brain" by Betty Edwards. :)
Mind -having said I'm a left-brainer, I am pretty good at languages
This article makes interesting reading: http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/11/understanding-your-brain-for-better-design-left-vs-right/
"those that have a dominant left side are also very organized; they prefer schedules and deadlines, and love rules and regulations. They are more auditory learners, and are better at using words to remember things rather than visual aids. They process ideas in a step-by-step, algorithmic way, and are therefore less prone to error."
Yes, that's pretty much me. If you substitute 'rules and regulations' with 'processes and procedures' then I agree even more as I am very organised in that way, and that is perhaps what they were trying to impart. I certainly believe in breaking rules when it suits me!
Interesting... This bit sums me up to a tee:
"Right brained people may lean more towards abstract art, because of its lack of order and disorganization. Abstraction also gives no boundaries, so it can be considered more ‘outside-the-box’, or creative.
Abstract art is also known to portray emotion, even with no hard visual evidence. A right brained person may more easily be able to pick up on an abstract piece’s deeper meaning."
I think that the left-side/right-side thing is also influential in terms of how we judge effects with high-end audio and/or the decisions we make when assembling our systems, especially in reference to what I've highlighted above in blue! ;)

Yup, knowing how to say please and thank you is often enough, in order to make them feel you're aware that it is YOU who are a guest in THEIR country, as opposed to the other way round!! ;)
Essentially it's about respect for one's fellow man: a particular bugbear of mine, as there's a distinct lack of it in evidence in today's society.
Marco.
So true which is why I try to learn a little of the lingo wherever I go :)

What's the language spoken in Sheffield? I thought it was still unexplored territory. :)
Round here 'bus' is pronounced 'buzz', 'water' is 'waiter' and the letter 'h' at the beginning of a word is always silent...
I once had to demonstrate how a Pelican crossing worked to some American tourists. They would have stood there all day otherwise, waiting for the traffic to stop.

That's Americans for you lol
People who get free tickets to the wimbledon final when others are reputedly paying £70k for a ticket according to the BBC.
Paying £700,000.00 in legal aid to get rid of you know who.
Nosy neighbours who pretend to bend over the fence to do gardening but are really nosying at my hifi system.
English weather as we all know there is never more than 2-3 days sun in one week.

But, to be fair, their 'zebra' crossings may as well have no markings whatsoever as traffic rarely stops even if you start crossing.

Do you think someone should have explained the rules to Wayne Rooney?

Money very well spent, in my opinion. One less terrorist bastard in our country.

He left the UK after a treaty was negotiated with Jordan. If they had done that from the outset he would have left ages ago and the cost would have been minimal. So it could be argued that the high cost of the case was a deliberate political attempt to keep the bogey man on the front page.

Nice one Stanley. There was loads of political capital to be made use of!
Actually it has been a major source of embarrassment to this and the previous administration. Given that both are pro EU this was a stick with which they have been getting beaten with by the anti-EU brigade for the last 10 years - although technically it is the ECHR ruling that was the block. I think it is more likely the Jordanians were stalling the process by being a little too demanding with the quid pro quo - which of course we will never hear about.
Agreed. No-one wanted this and the law and the courts thwarted us at every step. This is the price of human rights. There is no winner.

Idiots that think they can pull the wool over my eyes by sending me crap in the form of American White Oak timber when i paid for European Oak :steam:
People who don't have the common decency to call you back when you leave them a Voicemail.... Does my head in!!!

Worse is people who go through to your voicemail and leave 30 seconds or a minute of silence (except for the background noise) and then hang up. If you don't want to leave a message then don't leave one! Don't keep me hanging on waiting for you to start speaking - what is that all about?
Both of those examples are blooming annoying, and I'd agree with you entirely!!
Whilst on the subject of annoying. Predictive text! Who likes it? Blooming annoying stuff, earlier I wanted to say Cat and this damn iPad put Car!!!

Charities that send 'begging' letters even when you already give them monies per month :steam:
I used to give a lot to charities before my accident but I simply can't afford to anymore, so I always feel terribly guilty when I receive something from one of the charities I used to donate to, the most recent being the RSPCA :(

Ah, don't worry Dave, remember you made the effort in the first place where a lot of people don't bother!

Paul,
Absolutely.
(Mounting his hobby horse...)the worst of which is Amnesty, which has also just pissed away hundreds of thousands of pounds settling unfair dismissal with senior staff and now doing a pointless and expensive reorganisation. I do not give to charities to subsidise self-indulgent infighting or pursuit of the latest management fads.
The other thing that really ticks me off is the amount of self-congratulatory crap they spend money producing to tell us how wonderful they are. I do not give to charities to have the money wasted on marketing themselves to me. It is completely pointless and a waste of money we have given for other purposes.
They rang recently to up my contribution and were so unapologetic about these gripes, I cancelled my DD instead. I've given the money elsewhere.
If government, the civil service etc are ripe for reform, then the charity sector needs a massive boot up the backside. What the Charity Commission actually does about these big charities - Oxfam, Amnesty, RSPCA etc is beyond me. If a normal business used money which I had given for a specific purpose in the way they do, senior execs would up in front of the beak...
