Why should it make a difference? Are you going to undertake them?

No.
But why doesn't it make a difference?

Picture this .....numerous cars in the left hand lane, all stationary, the right hand lane, which has arrow markings for straight ahead, and turning right,so in the interest of using up empty space on the road, and alleviating tail backs,so, with with just one car sitting there, no indicators going,to alert other road users of their intention, probably assuming that we all have ESP poor unsuspecting other driver joins the right hand lane, naturally thinking that as no indicators are flashing, he's going to go straight ahead, but no, the lights turn, and twat face then starts to signal to turn right, and poor sod behind him can't move until all the oncoming traffic has come across the junction, at which stage twat face moves off, and the poor sucker behind him, now half an hour behind the last car that was in the left hand lane, finally moves off.

If there are two lanes at the approach to the roundabout there are presumably two lanes for the 'straight on' exit. Therefore those cars queuing in the left-hand lane will use the left-hand lane on exit and the similarly, those in the right-hand lane will use the right-hand lane on exit..

The story goes that travelling back to London from her Scottish estate, Queen Victoria would instruct the curtains be closed in her carriage before she passed Newcastle, apparently she couldn't bear to look at it.

I'd imagine this compares to the sense if relief I feel when the train reaches Durham and the cathedral all lit up comes into view... You can't deny its a lovely sight.

The stretch around Berwick's my favourite bit. Coming back approaching King's Cross with the anticipation of mixing with the hoi polloi on the tube is also a high spot.

Absolutely... Having managed to meet a few of the members here in person the forum becomes even more friendly and none of the other forums have that for me.

Speaking of which its almost time to load up the motor and hit the road, camera charged to make some new acquaintances and mingle again with the 'old'.

Well, one could've avoided them, and not have been held up, by going into the L/H lane (if said lane was available for going straight on), had the driver been indicating to turn right in the first place... ;)

The single thing that annoys me most about driving are the 'self-appointed Traffic Police', who think that they 'own' the fast lane on motorways (and thus can take permanent residence there without shifting out of the way), simply because they're doing 70mph! :steam:

Even more annoying are those who call it the fast lane. It's the OVERTAKING lane!

Favourite thing around here is ignoring lane markings and going straight on from 'right turn' lanes or turning at 'straight on' junctions. Overtaking on the inside using an active bus lane is a regular thing too.

I came across one female 'arse' today, we were in a queue at traffic lights, I was behind her and two cars were in front of her. I could see she was fumbling about with the stereo and when the lights went green, the two motors in front of her drove off leaving me stuck behind her. I got fed up and drove around her and stopped at the signals which by now were red again, she then started ranting, so I just told the dozy cow to shut her trap! :steam:

One of my instructors commented that signs, road markings, etc. are "driver stuff", ie. for other people, as most of those behind the wheel are not drivers. They are pedestrians just trying to get from A to B with the minimum effort or concentration. And I think he was right! The car is just an extension of their living room.

That's not as bad as truckers who indicate as they are changing lanes on a motorway - with no forewarning whatsoever! One has to develop a 'sixth sense' to this.

Also, those drivers using the inside lane of the motorway (or as you correctly describe it "an overtaking lane"), who on being informed the lane is closed in say 400 or 800 yards distance, leave it to the last minute to change lanes, thereby forcing their way in; whereas most people will merge lanes at the earliest opportunity.

I always think of it as the "inside" lane since it is inside the motorway, nearest the crash-barrier. You join a motorway from outside, so logically the "outside" lane is the first one you join with the slower moving traffic.

But then a rose by any other name ....

awkwardbydesign
09-08-2014, 20:27
Ah, you need to be careful then, as it IS known as the outside lane. If you ever get instructed (by the police at an accident site, for example?) to use the outside lane, you could cause BIG problems. Seriously!

But there is no inside or outside to a motorway as a whole. You don't join the motorway from outside, you just join it. The lane you join is the inside lane - there are also two overtaking lanes and the fastest is the outside lane. I'm afraid it's not a question of personal preference as to how this terminology is applied.

Is that motorways merging? If so, it's not uncommon, but I've not experienced actually joining a motorway from the right, as far as I recall, but then my memory is crap!
Back to pet hates; the M6 toll road. If you are in the overtaking lane, you could easily end up on it without meaning to. But if you sit in that lane all the time, then it would serve you right!

Oh dear. In case you hadn't realised (like the outside lane being an OVERTAKING lane, not the fast lane?), there is a give way line at the end of the slip road. As in - give way to traffic on the motorway?
So what I hate is the idiots right up your arse while you are checking it is actually safe to join. It's very hard to do that with some tosser about to run into the back of your car because he is to close and too fast. Do they not realise the car in front may be going slower than they normally would because of THEM? The closer someone is behind me, the slower I have to drive. So they are often causing the the problem they complain about.
I often get oblivious muppets pulling out without looking, and then abusing me for being on "their" motorway. And on the bike, that could kill me.

Sure, but that's a different situation to what I'm referring to. The slip road, leading to joining a motorway, is effectively an acceleration lane, allowing you, as quickly as possible, to reach the same speed as the traffic already on that motorway, which unless there is some type of hold-up, is mostly around 70mph, and in many cases faster than that.

Therefore, when I reach the end of that slip road/acceleration lane, before joining the motorway, I want to be matching the speed of the oncoming traffic (and thus be able to hit the fast/outside lane as soon as it's safe to do so), not be held back by some dithering buffoon doing 45/50mph, simply because he or she just wants to slip slowly into the inside (slow lane) behind all the trucks!

In that scenario, they're simply not only a damn nuisance and an obstacle impeding my progress, but also not using the acceleration lane/slip road correctly for its intended purpose. The fact is, it's very dangerous joining a motorway travelling at a speed significantly slower than that of the oncoming traffic; the process should be carried out as seamlessly as possible, so these ditherers are bloody a hazard.

Whilst I see where you're coming from, if the inside lane of the motorway is travelling at 50-ish mph due to lorries, then what they are doing is correct as the slip road is intended for them to match the speed of the traffic on the motorway. Those people who plough onto the motorway and then cut straight across to the second or third lane are usually simply being agressive. You can usually spot them a mile off by the 'Audi' badge on their car, though!

My pet hate with this situation is the people who come down the slip road, don't look in their mirrors and completely ignore you who are already on the motorway, thus expecting YOU to move out of THEIR way! Sadly, now that I have a small and boring car, I sometimes have to do this to avoid an accident but it was amazing how coming up against a big green Range Rover that wasn't budging used to make them see the error of their ways.. :D

 I remember an old saying- there are two areas where men can't take criticism; sexual prowess and driving ability!
There was a series on TV a while back about drivers with problems; each driver went out with an instructor who assessed their driving. The woman who couldn't park (her main problem was her critical sister, IIRC), the angry young man whose girlfriend was scared to go with him (he used to get angry with drivers on the motorway who didn't get out of his way as he came down the slip road, he even said they were in the wrong lane! When he had the rules explained to him he enjoyed his driving more, and so did his girlfriend!). And the older driver in a Morris Minor whose family complained he was too slow, and held up the traffic. The instructor complimented him on his driving and observation and said he could pass the driving test tomorrow!
As for the IAM course, I did that on the motorbike, but didn't learn anything new, but then I was pretty careful already. I think there are better advanced courses and tests out there.
I actually agree that ditherers cause problems, but IMO not nearly as many as the impatient and aggressive drivers.
Obviously I am perfect.:pat:

I fully agree. However, I'm talking about when the traffic is flowing freely, yet some selfish ditherer still insists on joining the motorway 20mph slower than everyone else, bar the trucks in the inside lane, impeding my progress in the process, simply because all they want to do is join the slow lane and sit there for the duration of their journey!

When permitted by the cars in front of me, and providing that the traffic on the motorway is flowing freely, I use the acceleration lane/slip road to increase my speed up to around 80mph, thus joining the motorway in a position that enables me, traffic permitting, to effortlessly 'glide', as quickly and as safely as possible, into the lane of my choice (the 'fast lane'), and in a way that causes no-one else already on the motorway to brake or change course.

If the flow of traffic prevents me from doing that, then I take one lane at a time and slowly edge myself out onto the fast lane. However, I resent being prevented from doing the former as a result of some dithering imbecile in front of me, who is rather selfishly unconcerned about the speed of anyone else's progress other than his own! :wanker:

My pet hate with this situation is the people who come down the slip road, don't look in their mirrors and completely ignore you who are already on the motorway, thus expecting YOU to move out of THEIR way!

Yes, I also hate that. When I'm in that position, I always give way to the traffic entering from the slip road, but more often than not I've read the situation ages back and have gotten well out of the way in advance, thus impeding neither their progress nor my own. I always like to prepare myself for what's happening both in front of and behind me (in that respect, I'm constantly looking in the rear view mirror).

Quite simply, being vigilant and showing some courtesy towards other road users, prevents accidents!

I do agree, however dithering/indecisive drivers can be just as bad, and much if it stems from a lack of confidence, especially when it comes to motorway driving. Quite simply, if you're so nervous and/or have such a lack of confidence, then you shouldn't be out on the road in the first place.

I know women, for example, who are 'too scared' to use motorways (and thus avoid them like the plague, causing themselves untold inconvenience in the progress), yet have been driving for over 20 years!

What's that muppetry about?

I completely agree and this is the route I generally take. However when the motorway is crowded, there's something behind you and something in the middle lane that means you can't easily either slow down or move out of their way then there's not much option but to take them on!

Wrong, wrong, wrong! You shouldn't "give way" to traffic on the slip road, that is their responsibility. Anticipate, yes, move over if it is safe, yes, adjust your speed SLIGHTLY, yes, but not give way! Otherwise you can end up with the stupid and dangerous situation where the driver on the motorway slows, the driver on the slip road (who actually knows the rules, and the danger of assuming) also slows and all the cars behind BOTH of them risk running into them and causing a major incident. The give way line is there for a reason!

A DSA survey a few years ago found that 26% of qualified drivers were scared of motorway driving. (The other 74% drove Audis and BMWs.)
The proposed changes to allow learners onto motorways with an ADI are well overdue, IMO. Here in Plymouth we are quite lucky, as the A38 is almost a motorway, with tractors, bicycles and T junctions! At 70mph. And all driving tests include joining and leaving.

There are slow drivers, timid drivers and those that should never have been given a licence. They just about managed to fool the examiner that they were safe on the road as they managed to control the vehicle at under 30mph on residential/town roads. They neither have the ability or the confidence to drive on A roads or Motorways, and the technique to join them from a slip road is something that they have only dreamed about when they have woken up screaming like a banshee after terminal nightmares that they were going to be "made" to drive like a real motorist and battle the "slip road to death":eek:

No one knows the Highway Code anymore, or if they did they have "conveniently" forgotten the bits that "might slow them down a bit". Yes, you should not have to alter your speed or direction by someone joining the road. However, there are times when a collision is the outcome unless you do. Selfish arseholes.

There are slow drivers, timid drivers and those that should never have been given a licence. They just about managed to fool the examiner that they were safe on the road as they managed to control the vehicle at under 30mph on residential/town roads. They neither have the ability or the confidence to drive on A roads or Motorways...

Indeed, and I'd remove all the ditherers from the roads, or make them sit another test to prove that they possess the necessary skills to share the roads with the rest of us that have them! ;)

That should reduce the frustration levels of driving a bit, by ridding us of their ineptitude.....

I've got lots of good ideas, in that respect. For example, how about heavily fining folk (along with administering penalty points) who stupidly run out of fuel on motorways, thus creating horrendous tailbacks in the process, with all the inconvenience (and often loss of income) that causes for the rest of us?

[I'd also include vehicles breaking down that haven't been regularly maintained or serviced].

MUPPETS!!!

In this day and age, driving inside urban zones, there is simply NO acceptable excuse for running out of fuel!! :nono:

They neither have the ability or the confidence to drive on A roads or Motorways, and the technique to join them from a slip road is something that they have only dreamed about when they have woken up screaming like a banshee after terminal nightmares that they were going to be "made" to drive like a real motorist and battle the "slip road to death":eek:

Or there was a pupil of mine, brilliant driver, passed his test first time with 2 minor faults (one too fast, one too slow!), and within a few months had crashed twice, racing other drivers on the Hoe, and had his doors kicked in by someone who took exception to his attitude.
It's generally the drivers who think they are better than others who are usually worse. And have to take extended retests!

Marco
12-08-2014, 20:06
Lol.... I would gladly support re-testing every, say, 15 years, up until the age of 65 (in order to prove driving competence), whereupon the frequency of testing increases to every five years, until the age of 80 and above, where it then increases to every two years.

The problem at the moment is that there are way too many idiots on our roads, masquerading as 'drivers', who are woefully inept at the skills it takes to genuinely be good at the job - indeed some could say the very same for parenting!! :door:

Traffic cops have made the single biggest contribution to reducing the status of the police in the eyes of the normal law-abiding person. I don't know what the situation is nowadays but I know in the 'Eighties the traffic division was looked down on by the rest of the Force as not being 'proper' coppers at all.

But the traffic behind you on a services sliproad shouldn't be moving fast. Unless it's Marco, of course!
I once got out of our camper van when a truck got jammed in a tunnel in Italy, and walked forward towards the tunnel to have a look. Other people were picnicking on the hard shoulder, playing football, etc. We were in the middle lane, BTW. Then the jam started to clear, backwards from the tunnel, and I realised I had got too far ahead. I had to race back to the van while the traffic movement got further and further back towards my wife sat in our little middle lane roadblock. I got back and jumped in just before all the traffic hurtled out of the tunnel just behind us! God, that was close! Won't be doing that again.

The danger is in being hit by a vehicle wandering over the white line from lane one. Matching your speed to lane one vehicles reduces the chance of this .... or at least doing say 40mph. In millions of miles of driving I've only felt the need to do this once. Then again traffic on the slip road could or even should be doing 50 to 70 as it will be trying to match its speed to lane one traffic.

Why do you think there is a give way line at the end of the slip road? For giving way, which can mean stopping if necessary. Impatient and unobservant drivers create the emergency situation, NOT drivers stopping WHEN NECESSARY. Which it would be if there is a row of trucks.
I sometimes have to join the M6 from the M5, and often have to stop to wait for a gap. Unfortunately, people get a (wrong) idea into their heads and it's almost impossible to get it out! Practice doesn't make perfect; it makes permanent.
Which brings me to another pet hate (I seem to have lots of pets!); headlight flashing. It is NOT an invitation, or a thank you, it's a warning. I get flashed in the dark in our village after letting someone through the narrows. Great, now I'm blind for several seconds! And if it is used as an invitation to go ahead, was it meant for you (I had a Royal Mail van shoot out off the pavement when a car flashed. I thought he meant me, the van driver thought he meant him and didn't look round, nearly hitting me. Or the driver on the main road who flashed as one of my pupils was waiting to pull out of a junction. Luckily she was a bit slow, as the van driver didn't slow at all as he passed!), have they checked it is safe for you to go, and so on. If you do it on your driving test you WILL fail! Which reminds me of the girl on her test who flashed, beeped her horn, and waved when she saw her mum. Guess if she passed or failed!
Considering how many things I hate, perhaps I shouldn't go out at all. :(

Not if there is a solid line of trucks! And I would say there is more often danger from wandering vehicles when you are doing the same speed.

People who park on a busy road who have no qualms about walking round into the road and opening the door as wide as it will go to get in oblivious to all the traffic that is forced to swerve around them. And taking their sweet time about it as well. One day I will see this happen and someone will hit them and take their door off and probably them with it. What is wrong with waiting a minute for a break in the traffic?

Clive
13-08-2014, 10:33
The M5 / M6 junction usually involves small speed differentials and yes there's often a queue. I wouldn't advocate taking to the hard shoulder in that type of situation. It's high speed differentials which kill.

My father was always fond of pointing out that in a factory if you had a piece of heavy, fast moving machinery it would be surrounded by guard rails, yellow and black striped warning tape and safety notices. But you can stand right on or cross a busy road with dozens of such machines hurtling past and there are no safety barriers or warnings whatsoever. And because there are none some people just assume that it must be totally safe. You can see the same thing sometimes on mountains with people taking the most ridiculous chances. Although I can't talk having done some crazy Bear Grylls style free climbing in the past.

I think you'll find that "give way line" covers that. And "not stopping" means stopping to park, pick up hitch-hikers, etc. I mean, you are not allowed to stop on the zig-zgs at a crossing. That doesn't mean go though a red light or run over pedestrians!

It seems not. It's expected that drivers leave gaps. It's expected that on the slip road you modulate your speed such that you slip into a gap. In theory there should never be an issue. In truth there rarely is as long as you're not a hesitant driver. Motorway give way lines do not mean you can stop...they mean vehicles on the motorway have priority. You're not allowed to stop on a slip road except in an emergency or if it's regulated by traffic lights.

Clive
13-08-2014, 15:22
From the Highway Code

You MUST NOT stop on the carriageway, hard shoulder, slip road, central reservation or verge except in an emergency, or when told to do so by the police, an emergency sign or by flashing red light signals.

Btw stopping on zig zags is equivalent to red light signals above.

I have to admit I too hate drivers who drive down the slip lane and make no attempt to match the speed of the traffic they are trying to merge with. Not only are they a PITA if your behind them but the same if you are driving down the main road in the left-hand lane minding your own business when the idiot decides to have a game of Peek-A-Boo with you.

However, I also think the same of drivers who insist that they have to close the gap with the vehicle in front. You go down the slip road, match your speed, go to slip into the gap and then some idiot in lane one decides that he is going to close it off because he NEEDS to be up the arse of the car in front.

Don't look for it, it's not there anymore. They replaced it with an underpass and a 4 way junction above. Drivers would enter that roundabout as though they were competing in the Indy 500, even the artics. Some hair raising moments stuck there with a wall of trucks and cars bearing down on us.

I wouldn’t mind, but when the idiots walk right out in front of your car onto the road, completely oblivious of your presence, simply because they’re miles away in their own little la-la-land, it’s not only stupid but also rather dangerous!

Yes, I know what you mean. I have had 'issues' with people wheeling trolleys into my way and me firmly wheeling them back where they came from, with the trolley user still attached. Same with shopping baskets swung into in my way, I just bash them out of the way. I sent one bloke back about six feet hanging onto his trolley, after he completely blocked my way. He followed me about ranting until I told him what would happen if he didn't shut his trap! :steam:

There’s a better answer: don’t use supermarkets, period…

Not enough folk these days support local independent shops or farmer’s markets. No wonder so many traditional town centres look like graveyards, as folk flock to out of town retail parks and shop online (usually out of sheer laziness)!

Do you work for such a company?

I try to be patient when dealing with various business phone conversations. My car insurer Aviva is excellent to deal with, very helpful and friendly.

Mind you, I did get a bit hot under the collar with Argos today. The dimwits delivered a bookcase I was waiting for to the wrong address, which their courier then couldn't relocate and Argos had the cheek to say I'd have to wait for their 'investigation'. Not my problem. Theirs. After a lot of insisting and no backing down on my part, they gave in and another is coming Thursday. Mail order? Lots of aggro if you ask me. (mind you, I wasn't rude)

(and I'm still waiting for another supplier to send replacement parts for a flatpack oak sideboard that arrived totally wrecked. What a bollox!)

Marco

The answer: avoid online mail-order companies, shift off thy botty and use proper shops, located in town centres, where you can moan directly at someone if there are any problems - and generally receive better service. Simples :)

;)

I do, luckily half the people I talk to are really nice, but the other half are incredibly rude and expect something for nothing.

I fully sympathise with your frustration, if a service is offered, when paid for it should be delivered without issue or cause for complaint.

The answer: avoid online mail-order companies.

Unfortunately Marco, the only furniture I could find that met my needs size wise, was offered online. If I could buy what I wanted locally at a sensible price, I would. I daresay most of us find ourselves in that situation these days.

Marco
19-11-2014, 10:57
Sure, Geoff, I get that - and was really just pulling your leg! ;)

However, it’s amazing what you can find when you’re ‘out and about’, and actively looking, rather than just parked behind a computer.

I do think a lot of us, when shopping, are guilty these days of simply switching on our computers and clicking a mouse, instead of getting off our backsides and discovering what’s out there in the real world, which when done, can often be rather enlightening :)

Marco.

Not where i live tbh Marco. The council put the rates up so high that only the bargain and charity shops remain. a couple of butchers and a bakers. Damn shame as it used to be an excellent town centre. Marks & Spencer wanted to come to the town years ago but the powers of the day who were made up of resident shop owners refused them entry. It was a stupid decision and very blinkered with what they thought was self preservation. M and S went elsewhere and all the punters started shopping in that area boosting all the local shops as well. Our town centre collapsed and most of the shops closed forever

Marco
19-11-2014, 11:22
Sadly, Grant, that seems to be the case in a lot of places. I must be fortunate that in Wrexham (and its environs) there’s almost everything you could wish for, including the stuff you’ve just mentioned.

However, the question I’d ask is how insular have we become in the days of the computer age? I mean, most of us these days have cars, so if what we want isn’t available right on our own doorstep, then why not drive to the next town where it might be?

For example, I’ll happily drive 40-odd miles to Liverpool and back (and indeed have done so many times) if what I want is available there, and not locally, ditto with Chester or even Manchester or Birmingham… Think of how many times we’ve all done something similar in the past, before computers dictated our lives.

Therefore, my main question is: has the age of computer shopping made us all a bunch of lazy couch potatoes??

I agree that it has increased the problem but thats the way it goes now..

Sure, I get that. The subject probably deserves a thread of its own, and I have strong views on the matter.

However, the state of affairs you describe may also explain why so many towns these days are like ghost towns (and don’t have what you want in them), save a few take-away restaurants and charity shops. If more folk shopped in town centres than on the Internet, chances are they’d be more high-street shops. It’s a fairly logical assumption.

As they say, you reap what you sow….. By creating it, we’ve become victims of a ‘convenience culture’, and thus have made that 'the norm'.

Much prefer to go to a shop personally wben i can and often do as i can shop during the week daytime when parking is easier and the shops arnt too busy. most folk dont have that luxury though

Indeed, but sometimes it’s worth making time for things that could genuinely improve our quality of life. These days, we’re too busy running around like headless chickens ‘doing stuff’ that, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t really that important. I think it’s time for us to ‘get a grip’, before it’s all too late.

Driving about may be somewhat easier where you are Marco. If I need to travel across any part of the London area, I have to pick my time carefully, as the traffic is appalling most of the day. It can take me 40 minutes to do one mile in the 'rush hour' and the 'rush hour' is 7.30 to 9.30 and later 4.30 to 7.00 around here. Even at the best of times traffic can be pretty thick. Quite right, and for the sake of your well-being, you should do it.

The key is to escape from the overcrowding and being part of the ‘rat race’. Life’s too short for that pish! Sometimes, it’s better to lead a simpler life (with less material possessions and general ‘complication'), and have less money, than the opposite. We all want too much ’stuff' these days…

For me, TIME (the ability to do what I want, when I want) will always be much more important than any amount of money (or possessions), if having lots of money (and possessions) means living a continually pressurised existence. Fook that! :nono:

Geoff you MUST move out of London as it's a rat race... we moved from Luton and Stevenage to Portsmouth (ok not as far south west as you may like!) and have never looked back...

If we are at a loose end we always drive the 5 minutes to the coast and have a coffee on the seafront, overlooking the Isle of Wight.. :D

I have no idea what we used to do when we lived in Luton/Stevenage... apart from doing a lot of travelling to Southsea/Portsmouth where are boat was ...

We have friends who live in Cornwall, they own a nice campsite, but I wouldn't move that far south west as the roads are rubbish and it's just far too busy in the season... so I'd suggest somewhere like Weymouth, or thereabouts... We consider Weymouth our 'second home' as we spend so much time there, and the roads are pretty good, especially compared to Cornwall roads

The other thing I love about Weymouth, apart from it being VERY pretty, is my favourite seafood restaurant::: the 'Crab House Cafe'... they have the BEST oysters from their farm on the Fleet... yummy...

Don't wait Geoff you must move south west ' ish ... you won't regret it :D

If the covers have a gloss finish, you should find brushing a bit of cheap furniture polish just on the sticker will soften the adhesive enough to peel it off. It has to soak in for about half an hour.

I imagine they expected people to use them, not worship them. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-31035161
As marking the cover does not "totally destroy" them.

I agree but only to a degree. All my books are friends of mine and I look after them. However, because I read them so often, some of them are showing signs of wear. I'm not going to chuck out an old friend just because its looking a bit tatty. I might even tape up the edges and stick stuff together to keep it in readable shape. Same goes for record sleeves. Stuff gets used. That is what they are for, not looking lovely on the shelf.

One of my pet hates is the prats who query why I read the same book more than once:lol:

If the covers have a gloss finish, you should find brushing a bit of cheap furniture polish just on the sticker will soften the adhesive enough to peel it off. It has to soak in for about half an hour.

That's what I use - "Mr Sheen" (or similar) aerosol furniture polish. Also use the same to remove stickers from (some) LP sleeves and CD cases.

People who complain about stickers on 25p books.
I do care about books' conditions, but not at 25p. Unless pages are missing! As soon as I've read them I usually give them back. You know, to give someone else the chance to read them?

I can re-read good books (Titus Groan, The Nightland), and listen to music over and over, but can't really watch films repeatedly. So very few videos here, just a few classics (The 7 Samurai, Born Yesterday, Metropolis, etc).

It's nothing to do with the cost. I wish you people would stop being so arsey. Its totally about destroying a pristine 40 year old book by sticking a price sticker that cannot be removed without causing damage to the book cover hence destroying it.

I'm with André on this one. Whilst obviously it is the content of the book that matters, I often appreciate the artwork of the book's cover (especially Penguin and Corgi sci-fi books) and to have the covers spoilt by difficult to remove stickers would annoy me.

Andre...to you it's destroying it. To me, it is certainly annoying but I would still buy the book if I wanted to read it. Its main purpose is still unaffected. It was made to be read not looked at.

I like my home to look 'lived in' and feel uncomfortable in houses that look like show houses. We are all different and I don't think it's being arsey to express a different view.

Those stupid bath things for cleaning records, can't remember the name now. The ones that you spin manually in a bath of fluid. I used them ages ago when I was converting all my vinyl to CD.

As I'm having fun playing with five TTs at the mo, I have been dragging out albums that haven't been played for ages. Without exception, they have a uneven sheen on them and sound crappy, as if the stylus is dragging through something unpleasant.

I reckon washing up liquid and a brush would be better.:steam:

Oh noes.....we disagree:eek:

Food is such delicious stuff that any time spent preparing it is never a waste of time. It starts for us with growing the stuff. We have no dishwasher and, once the meal is digested a bit, actually get to talk to each other some more whilst doing the washing up.

4:45am: Getting ready to go get my bus

3:00pm: home from work, tidy around, morning pots washed thinking about what's for tea
4:30pm: Music
5:30pm: getting food ready
6:30pm: shovel nosh down the neck ASAP
7:00pm: wash pots, get uniform ready for morning, pack up dinner for next day, sit down with the wife for an hour {sometimes i sneak off for a quick listern}
8:30pm: Jump in the shower
9:00pm: in bed an hour watching TV till shut eye.. 6.0 hours kip before it all starts again

If i can squeeze some casual listerning in while im at it i will do.

WORK:eek:

Wassat then?

When we did such mundane stuff as having to work for a living, it was exactly the same. In Kingston, we had an allotment and still grew our own fruit and veg. Actually had to buy meat which was a pity.

We both worked full time. Good food doesn't have to take long to prepare. We have never had a TV so music would be on most of the time and serious listening could be done later in the evening. We are one of those strange couples who actually enjoy one another's company, so spending time together sharing the 'boring' stuff is as much fun as the more exciting.

I really like my wife. It makes a whole load of difference to sharing a life together. Neither of us has a particular job to do, whoever is handy or free just gets on with it. We have given up being bugged by being called Tom and Barbara:) but gumboots are the order of the day.

Mind you, as you say, I do wonder how we used to fit it all in AND work. Managed it somehow.
