Paul,

Absolutely.

(Mounting his hobby horse...)the worst of which is Amnesty, which has also just pissed away hundreds of thousands of pounds settling unfair dismissal with senior staff and now doing a pointless and expensive reorganisation. I do not give to charities to subsidise self-indulgent infighting or pursuit of the latest management fads.

The other thing that really ticks me off is the amount of self-congratulatory crap they spend money producing to tell us how wonderful they are. I do not give to charities to have the money wasted on marketing themselves to me. It is completely pointless and a waste of money we have given for other purposes.

They rang recently to up my contribution and were so unapologetic about these gripes, I cancelled my DD instead. I've given the money elsewhere.

If government, the civil service etc are ripe for reform, then the charity sector needs a massive boot up the backside. What the Charity Commission actually does about these big charities - Oxfam, Amnesty, RSPCA etc is beyond me. If a normal business used money which I had given for a specific purpose in the way they do, senior execs would up in front of the beak...

Peter

Peter,

I'd agree with everything you've said.

Having worked with a charity that'll remain nameless before, I was and still am disgusted with the constant waist of money I saw and I was only there for 6 months!

Ah, don't worry Dave, remember you made the effort in the first place where a lot of people don't bother!

I don't generally give to charities.

Do a little digging and you'll understand why, in fact if a major charity has a main office near you, see what kind of cars drive away at the end of the day. Charities should employ charitable staff who see their job as a vocation, not hi-flying, high salaried execs!

I totally agree with you. I only give monies to a select few charities and my wife and I review these on an annual basis. Primarily the reason for us giving monies as a donation is because us or a member of our family have been affected by something!

Am I the only one who finds that cables drive me mad? You put more than one together and they seem to be able to get themselves intertwined without moving any of them... My wife finds it hilarious when I am wiring up the Hifi or Home Cinema as I always get annoyed when cabling it up....

People who put their car alarms on when the get on a ferry, pity the people who work down on the decks when the moment the boat gets going the whole lot sounds like a Futurist Symphony. As if anyone is going to nick the car (or that they can hear the alarm if it goes off). Top class numptying!

There are folk, on these hallowed boards, who can hear the difference between different amounts of memory allocated to audio buffers so you're probably on to something here.

Noisy neighbours!

Despite asking them politely twice. Speaking to the landlady and when that had little affect having a letter sent to them from the noise control team at the local council, I still find myself moving from the flat I have lived in for 9 years because the young idiot that moved in next door makes noise (shouting, arguing,tv, music) at any time of the day or night he chooses to. I am not the only resident of the building to suffer his arrogance but it still goes on.

Maybe I should say selfish neighbours rather than noisy.

Some builders are re-furbing the flat two floors below us and its been going on for ages - woke up this morning with the sound of a drill so loud that it felt like it was in my head ...
Sadly they are within their rights to make this kind of noise from 8-1 on a Saturday ...

8am on a Saturday is not a great time to be hearing that!

The final straw for me was being woken at 4am to the sound of my neighbour yelling at his girlfriend that other men were looking at her arse when she was dancing.

have now found that I cannot import dbx files (outlook express) into outlook 2010 direct because Microsoft say they are not similar programs.. their own threads suggest a 3rd party tool.. whats that all about then...

had to find a work round to installing Frontpage 2003 (bought as an upgrade to FP 2000, so a total cost of over £225) it might be old but it does me.. and 8 tells you thanks but no thanks.. what's that all about then etc etc et fecking cetera...

Steve, isn't there some variety of 'compatibility mode' for older software (there is in Win7) so you can get Frontpage working?

The danger of using proprietary formats is that you're beholden to the creator of the format, maybe it's time to make use of your anger to escape from giving MS another chance to do this to you?

Maybe try Thunderbird for your email?

There are also a couple of Frontpage alternatives (Nvu, Kompozer, OpenWYSIWYG) that might be worth a try? If you get on with these you might try considering swapping out the underlying OS too? Personally I like www.debian.org (or anything that's debian based)

Managed to get frontpage 2003 installed I googled and found a work around involving permissions or something.. ( a right click during installation) and I will certainly be checking out all sorts of alternatives from now on in.. but I bought outlook 2010 thinking it would be a logical improvement over outlook express, only to find it's nothing like.. but now I've bought it I WILL beat it into shape...

Appreciate the heads up but I simply couldn't face a new OS.. my head would cook..

The natural successor to FrontPage is Expression Web, which I use successfully with W8.

Outlook Express and Outlook are nothing like each other and never have been. It's unfortunate that the Express 'domestic' mail client was ever given the Outlook name. The natural successor to Express is Windows Live Mail, which is a free download for W7. For W8, Windows Mail is built-in.

Outlook is really designed for Microsoft Exchange corporate use and is crippled when used with only POP3 or IMAP accounts. However, it does become highly productive when used with an Outlook.com account (successor to Hotmail).

All clear? :)

Yes, and of course, vice versa. After all, as they say: 'it takes two to tango', and so women aren't the only ones in relationships who deserve to be 'kept happy'... ;)

What I've seen way too much of is men 'keeping their wives happy' at the very sad expense of their own happiness. It should always be remembered that the success of a long-term marriage is about give and take, and the understanding of both people, for the duration of the marriage, that it is a 50/50 partnership!

Too bloody right. I've said it before and I will no doubt repeat the exercise but..........if the other half doesn't suit you - change it/her/him. Life is too short to be unhappy. If you don't want the same things, you shouldn't be together. Use the brain not the gonads.

Marco
10-10-2013, 08:45
Absolutely. The most important thing of all before getting married and living together under the one roof, is to ensure that you are COMPATIBLE - and the best way of ascertaining that is to share a house together for at least a year, before going ahead with the marriage, which will allow both of you to gets used to each other's 'little quirks'/bad habits! :eyebrows:

Oh, and even more important than that, make sure that kids don't enter the equation until AFTER the marriage has taken place, so that the marriage is going ahead for the right reasons (i.e. that you love each other and want to spend the rest of your lives together, not that you feel that you have to because she's 'up the duff'!!!)

Once you're married, it's too late moaning afterwards about 'her' and how she 'drives you potty'. Quite simply, if he or she is not 'the one', then don't marry him or her in the first place! If you're spending a significant amount of your time together arguing, then chances are you're not truly compatible.

Of course, for various reasons, women can often change their personalities quite drastically after having kids - BUT there is no reason to allow that to alter what attracted you to each other in the first place.

Essentially, retaining that 'spark' (which initially brought you together), throughout the duration of a marriage, and being kind and considerate to each other, and totally honest, too (mutual trust and respect is massively important in any relationship), is what will most likely ensure the longevity of any marriage.

Marco.

P.S 'High-maintenance' women are usually not the best types to marry ;)

Why is it so many blokes regard women as having some sort of mystique and develop hang-ups about them? This stops fellas relating properly to the girls. We have caller ID enabled on our line. I've noticed that many of these calls come from abroad therefore they show up on caller ID as International. If I receive such a call I answer the phone then immediately hang up. Worse are the silent calls, these come from automated systems which send out speculative calls to random numbers, wherein if the call is answered the line goes dead almost immediately. The system then logs that the line is live and that someone is in to take a call from an agent of the company which owns the system. You can expect a sales call from a human being within a few hours of receiving an automated call...

I was getting fed up of some debt collection mob calling me and asking to speak to some bloke I've never heard of. After about the tenth call from the same people I unplugged the phone from the wall. Then promptly forgot I'd done it. After about 3 months someone said to me that they had tried to call my landline and it wasn't working. So reminded I promptly plugged it back in. That was about a year ago and I have had no calls since - not from anyone, machine or human! Even though I stumbled upon it by accident I can highly recommend this solution.

It's not a better system though - not completely anyway. Feet and inches are far more practical than centimetres and metres because cm are too small and M are too large. A pint is just right, a litre is too much and 500 mil not enough. Kilometres are just awkward. I know it makes maths and science easier but for everyday life it sucks. I can't visualise in metres and centimetres so I have to convert mentally into feet and inches and it's a bloody nuisance. Barry

A point of information: our so-called Imperial system of measurements is based on the French avoirdupois, introduced after the Norman conquest.

Furthermore the decimal system of measurement was first conceived by the English cleric, John Wilkins in 1668. The French metric system was proposed in 1799, over one hundred years later.

In scientific work the metric system is obvious, logical and practical. This is brought home to anyone who works in engineering and who has to deal with materials obtained from US sources, whose material properties are quoted in Imperial units. Can you imagine the frustration of having to deal with thermal conductivities quoted in BthU/foot/°F instead of W/K/m. Or densities quoted in lb/cubic foot, rather than g/cc?

Having said that, personally I’m “ambidextrous”, or rather inconsistent – I’m happy to buy beer and milk in pints and be informed of my speed in mph and distances in miles, yet I’m also content to buy my food in grams or Kg, wine in millilitres and buy petrol in litres. Curiously though, when putting up shelves or doing any other DIY, I feel more comfortable working in feet and inches! This is probably due to the fact that yards, feet, and inches are loosely based on the human body – so I can understand the affection these units have.

But there were a host of other non-decimal, Imperial units that have rightly disappeared, such as: the chain (the length of a cricket pitch), the rod, pole or perch (= 5.5 yards), barleycorn (= 1/3 inch) and the bushel (= 8 dry gallons). Does anybody want to bring those back?

In forestry there's a rather arcane unit for the measurement of timber (in log form) that the old fashioned traditional British hardwood merchants use and is called the Hoppus foot, whereby you calculate the volume of a log using it's length and a mid 'inch quarter girth' measurement - we have specially graduated tapes. A Hoppus foot is 1.273 cubic feet or 27.74 to the cubic metre! The idea is that the measurement converts a round log to the volume it would be after it's been sawn into a squared off block.

Yes and allow them to buy alcohol underage providing they pay with cash. Get them in the habit of using cash at a young age and hopefully that will mean no more poxy students creating a line in the off licence because they are paying with their stupid debit cards. I have better things to do than stand about whilst they are repeatedly declined. 'Forget the king size Rizla - what's that? Ninety pee? Okay now try it again....What? still declined? Oh I don't know what to do...let me take some time to ponder despite the fact that there is now a substantial queue of customers behind me, all of whom are seriously contemplating beating me to death.'

So tedious. Do they pay for their weed with a debit card? No.

It's spring and I'm cleaning ;)

It works like this - the living room needs a good sort out, too much unused kit piled up plus clothes, books and other assorted crap.

I can't move it into my bedroom as that is already full of unused kit, clothes, books etc

I could move the crap from the bedroom to the spare room except I can't get in the door due to - yes, you guessed, plus all the empty boxes the kit came in. That's a lot of boxes.

So started with the spare room, sorted that out, just about done the bedroom. Now I just need to move the crap from the living room up to the bedrooms, have a general tidy and I'm done, Except for the kitchen and the bathroom...another twenty hours or so and I will no longer have a house that looks like the inhabitant needs to be sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

I've been putting it of for a few years now excepting the odd superficial whizz around with the hoover so things got pretty bad...meant to do it over the Easter Holiday but I was sick with man flu the whole time. And to think I used to be a Captain Tidy like Tim. Don't really know what happened there.

You think you have problems. My daughter and two grand daughters live with me and the house is piled from top to bottom with toys, laundry, boxes of stuff and general clutter, due to their hoarding habits. There literally is no space anywhere. The living room just has a path down the middle clear of clutter the rest is piled high. All other rooms except my den, are the same. I've threatened that one day I'll order a skip and bung the whole lot in!!

That sounds bad, at least I don't have to argue with anyone if I want to throw stuff out. Although I did balk at throwing out some 25 year old gig T-shirts even though they are well past their best.

Stayed at a friends house once. The entrance hall was piled from floor to ceiling with video cassettes of old Dr Who episodes taped off the telly, must have been at least a thousand of them. All the bedrooms had stacks of old newspapers piled about six feet high with just a path from the door to the bed. That was his parents; he was obsessively tidy and organised, presumably some sort of reaction to it all I guess.

Trying to do a bit around the garden, but I've spent half the afternoon replacing plastic strimmer line that keeps breaking. It's not as if I bought cheapo stuff, this was quite dear.

I've got half a mind to remove the line feeder and fit a bit of flat steel banding in place. That should do the job. And don't tell me it's dangerous and I shouldn't do it. Because I've done it before.

Go to any cemetary and have a wander around.
You'll find loads of graves from people who were "indispensable".
The world still carries on despite their departure, and I've yet to see a headstone with "I wish I'd spent more time at the office" inscribed upon it.
The same goes for cleaning - I'm pretty sure that nobody in those graves wishes they'd spent more time cleaning the house.
OK, there's a balance to be had, but don't put yourself down because of a bit of dust.

Assets & wealth do not imply "class". Those who'd think so are probably the kind that think having gold taps in the bathroom is classy (yuk).

"Class" is probably interpreted differently by differing cultures and its worth or meaning in fact (if any), would be an evaluation only each individual could make.

I prefer to think in opposite terms, the scumbags and dregs of society I see wandering our shopping centres with their cans of beer and their Pitbulls, whilst on their way to the betting shop after having collected their benefit, are those who I'd say, have no class!

The Barbarian

I had a cd player come yesterday "packed" in one of those plastic post-bags... and nothing else !

Fascia had unclipped & the transport had shed a couple of springs but amazingly otherwise unharmed, 30 mins in surgery & its good as new. I couldn't really moan, the seller only charged £4 p&p & it was delivered by Parcelforce

Drivers who sit in the right hand lane at traffic lights whilst they're on red, not indicating, and thus traffic starts to queue behind them to go straight ahead, and one naturally assumes they are going straight on, and then as the lights turn green, they start to ferkin well signal their intention to turn right!

Why should it make a difference? Are you going to undertake them?

Well, one could've avoided them, and not have been held up, by going into the L/H lane (if said lane was available for going straight on), had the driver been indicating to turn right in the first place... ;)

The single thing that annoys me most about driving are the 'self-appointed Traffic Police', who think that they 'own' the fast lane on motorways (and thus can take permanent residence there without shifting out of the way), simply because they're doing 70mph! :steam:
