A company restructuring at work brought me the opportunity to take voluntary early retirement at 60. A lump sum and occupational pension enabled me to get by until 65 and draw state pension too. Who knows? You may get such an opportunity as well.

I'm not really complaining about work, quite like it, but surely paying in for 50 years for your State pension is more than enough? All this bollock of living longer, 80% of the blokes I've know friends and family haven't made it to 70!!!

I do that to discourage people from sitting next to me as opposed to sitting next to someone else. if I don't have a bag I'll sit across both seats. But if there are no other seats available I don't do it.
I remember the days when drunken Scotsmen, often with some dried blood on their clothes and skin, and always carrying cans of McEwan's, would get on board and make a beeline for me regardless of all the other empty seats. Not seen one in decades now but old habits die hard.

Not used public transport for thirty years. But no matter where I am, if something is in my way, I move it. Bags, supermarket trolleys, etc. Even if there's somebody hanging onto it! I have a right to be unimpeded!! I've even towed cars away from near my house.

Yes. I live on private property. The Highways Act and Road Traffic Act don't apply. Anybody blocking my way is trespassing!
"has that bag bought a ticket".....No...then it can f*ck off.
I used to have to travel to London on occasion and suffer the "privileged commuter" syndrome, where if you don't travel everyday you don't deserve a seat, or even half a seat. I got on at Waterloo and there was a window seat with a man in the aisle seat. I stood next to him and motioned that I was going to have that seat. He reluctantly got up and I got in. As soon as I sat down he dropped into the seat and spread his legs so that one was right against mine. It had not been a good day and the rage was instant. I pushed him out of his seat on to his arse in the aisle trod over him and shouted "piss off" at him and went to find something else. He never said a word.

I must have a look that bothers people. I caught a truck driver manouvering far too close to my car the other day. He'd climbed out of the cab to see how close he was getting and I marched over to him and said "Get the fuck away from the car!". He practically jumped in the air and ran to get back in his lorry and get away.

Even I'm not that bad. :)
I only mention it as I once boarded a train where the carriage was about 2/3 full. Shortly after I boarded, a group of four lads got on, sat down, and one removed his trainers. Immediately several of the other passengers got up and moved to another carriage; the smell was that bad. His friends were obviously embarrased, teased him to put his trainers back on. He did and they then got up and moved to a different carriage!

My eyesight is knackered too. But I still solder stuff. Have to dig out the strong specs though! :)
Soldering DIN plugs, especially if they have already been used!
Agreed - they are tricky to solder at the best of times, but when the solder buckets are full, a solder sucker doesn't necessarily clear them. A fine-tipped but powerful soldering iron has to be used; otherwise it can take too long to make the joint, by which time the insulation on the wire will have disfigured.
Unfortunately my system uses them (along with just about every other audio connector around: RCA phonos (ugh!); XLRs; 1/4" jack plugs; Tuchel, and CAMAC connectors). If I'm feeling lazy I'll buy ready-made DIN leads from Flashback Sales, who do a neat and professional job for a very reasonable price. :)

I'm generally speaking a Dylan fan, I probably have more of his music than of any other artist, ditto The Band - what annoys me is when I see a perfectly lousy performance by the above mentioned on YouTube, with Bob singing out of tune and Robbie clearly struggling to find a solo, there are about 600 comments saying it is the greatest version of the song they have ever heard. FFS indeed!

The only plugs like that I have seen have been wall-warts. Can't imagine any mains plug that has the cable emerging from the top, would satisfy BS1363.
Those rare plugs are a pain in the butt! I'll cut the end off in a heartbeat and put a good end on it. What bugs me is the Mark Levenson preamps that have the power cable input smack in the center of the bottom! What with the popularity of aftermarket power cords, seems like a dumb move. And other than freeing up space on the rear panel, I can't think of a single reason why they would choose to be difficult?
And let's not forget the Camac connector, was it called? While everyone else on the planet was using RCA connectors, Levenson decides to go with proprietary jacks? Another shot to the foot, did we learn nothing from Batamax? But it seems they have gotten over them in recent years. I have come close to making the purchase on a Levenson preamp on more than one occasion, I like everything else about it, but that sticking point about the power plug weighs on my mind.

Not sure I understand what you mean about Levinson gear having the mains cable in the centre of the bottom (base?)? All of my Levinson gear has the IEC mains connector on the rear panel, usually to one side or the other, with the exception of the ML2s, which have the connector and fuse unit located at the centre of the rear panel. Not that I experiment with after-market mains cables: just use 'kettle' leads, or ones I have assembled.
Understand what you mean about the CAMAC connectors, but they are infinitely preferable IMO to the horrid RCA 'phono' connectors. CAMACs are readily obtainable from Fischer, or from Lemo - but they are expensive. My Levinsons uses them (or XLRs), but then my system also uses just about every audio connector that has been designed!
and amplifiers that don't have a phono input stage.........
Whatever happened to white dog poo?
Microsoft bought it and closed it down.

Dogs chew on bones much less these days and eat more tinned dog food. That's why you don't see white dog poo.
Talking of which - one of my pet hates is the neighbour's cat defaecating on my lawn. I have to pick it up and walk 200m to the nearest 'dog poo' bin to dispose of it before I can cut the grass!

Check out the No. 326' and others in the No.320 line of preamps, no mains on the rear, it's in the center under the bottom. A good looking preamp! With lots of great features. But that's not one of them.
And the Camac's, just like Batamax, a superior format, that was kept proprietary and the lesser VHS being open licensed went world wide! Same thing with Camac and RCA, as you say the Camac is rare and expensive. You're not gong to get your favorite brand of cable with them, and a large number of old Levinson gear was switched over from Camac to RCA, back in the day.

The only way to make football worth watching is to put 4 extra players per side on the pitch, make the ball pointier at the top and bottom, let them carry it but not throw it forward. Oh and make the goal posts a big H shape too.

more than odd to me. Especially if it wasnt discussed, just told. Not for me personally that attitude. If my wife had asked me if it was ok, then I would have said it was but would be pissed if she had just announced it.

Yep, that's what happened, same thing last year, 10 days in New York, it's Canada this year. I didn't even get the chance to stick the cost of me going with them on my card.
I do have to add that we don't actually live together, I spend every Fri-Mon there as well as any time off I get, for all intents and purposes we have the dynamic of a married couple. we are together more than not I would say.
Many couples do take separate hols, and if she is used to it then maybe why. If she would not discuss it though then I guess she doesnt rate you as important as you do her, assuming you wouldnt do likewise.
One thing is for sure, its pointless trying to force the issue.
On the subject of holidays, my new pet hate is when you have been with your partner for four years, but she chooses to go on holiday with her 25 year old son and you aren't invited.

You are spot on about not forcing it, all I could do was tell her how I felt, then be the bigger person and say have a great trip to clear the air, it was a discussion I was never going to come out of well.

Yes, that's it in a nutshell :)
All relationships are complicated, but some are more complicated than others. Or, as Steely Dan put it:
'Worldly-wise, I realise
That everybody's crazy'.
Yes, that's it in a nutshell
Lol...which is why I keep things nice and simple: happily married to the same woman for 25 years, with no kids, debts or any major issues/worries, thus enjoy a relaxed and stress-free life :)
Hopefully that situation will be the same in another 25 years! ;)

Sounds ideal, I hope so too, it deserves a ding of glasses, cheers! :)
If I had the foresight when I was younger I would have met someone, settled down and done it properly. As it is I flung it around a fair bit and didn't meet someone I really thought was 'it' until 4 years ago.
I guess some relationships are worth the complications, but I still think it's odd :)
Cheers, Rich.
Are long as you're happy now, that's all that matters. Genuine happiness and fulfilment these days, for many folks, is a rare commodity. As they say, it's not how you start, but how you finish...! :)

Celebrities (in the loosest sense of the word) who are probably extremely comfortably off and don't gamble, responsibly or otherwise, advertising and glamourising gambling on TV. It should carry a custodial sentence at the very least.
But gambling is glamorous.
I do hate celebs doing adverts though. if I was a multi-millionaire the last thing I would be doing is grubbing about making a few bob peddling some shite on the telly. They must have no self-respect at all.
But gambling is glamorous.
Only if you win, and crucially, quit while you're ahead. Also, if you're only doing it for FUN and have money to burn. I've never met any poor bookies or casino owners yet! ;)
Otherwise, like any other addiction, gambling can ruin people's lives - and often rather spectacularly. It's merely something else that, more often than not, exploits the vulnerable.
Marco.
Certainly advertising it shouldnt be allowed. National lottery, which has taken over from pools and at least gives charities a bit is only one I would allow. Far too many bookies around now too. Its not healthy in general for all this temptation for the weak
Indeed. I'd ban scratch cards too, for that reason [observe the plethora of them these days in your average shop], and simply leave in place the main televised National Lottery.
Marco.

A parochial attitude, treating people like children. Don't agree with it. You treat people like children they are never going to grow up and learn to be responsible for their own actions.

Glamour is subjective so a blanket statement like yours can't be made. Best you can say is I think (or some people think ) gambling is glamorous.
Re. Your other post, I think education about the pitfalls of gambling would be preferable to putting vulnerable people up to their eyeballs in debt. If that's parochial then so be it.

There's a difference between having a legitimate medical condition and simply acting irresponsibly with the expectation that someone else will sort out the mess you've made and dry your eyes for you whilst scolding the nasty people who 'tempted' you in. Some people just use this as an excuse to do whatever the hell they want without any consequences. That's what happens when you construct a nanny state. People take the piss.

Indeed, and it'll be this that Grant was referring to, which is undeniably true, and which many people today suffer from. Although unofficially recognised as a medical condition, many medical experts consider it as a legitimate condition:

In fact you enjoy getting on it, hence you are happy to jump to wrong conclusions in order to do so.

Excerpt...
Addiction is defined by scholars as “a reliance on a substance or behavior that the individual has little power to resist.” Substance-based addictions are those based upon the release of dopamine in the brain, upon which the range of sensations produced by the euphoric event in the brain changes the brain’s immediate behavior, causing more susceptibility for future addictions. Behavior-based addictions, on the other hand, are those that are not linked to neurological behavior as much and are thus thought to be linked to personality traits; it is this type of addiction that combines a behavior with a mental state and the repeated routine is therefore associated with the mental state.[19]
Alan R. Lang, a psychology professor at Florida State University, wrote in a study that the continuing search for the personality traits that play a part in the development of addictions are important for the broader fight against addiction.[1] Identifying the different personality traits will help in the long term when it comes to the treatment of addiction, the strategies to intervene, and how to break the pattern of addiction.[20] With addictive tragedies becoming prevalent in communities around the United States, scientists are asking questions about the aspects of psychological makeup and how they contribute to addiction.[1] They also want to know if there are common threads that are in all addictions, from hard drugs to cigarettes and from gambling to overeating.[1] Through the information that already exists on the personality's role in addictions, with a lot of emphasis on drugs and alcohol, a study from the National Academy of Sciences says that there is no single set of psychological characteristics that pertain to all addictions.[1] The study did show, however, that there are common elements between all addictions.[1]

Surely there are degrees of OCD-like behaviour, on a range from being (what some might regard as) excessively tidy to 'a living hell'. There's a similar range for addictive behaviour/tendencies; from someone who can't stop themselves eating a whole tube of Pringles, to someone who has become physically addicted to heroin or alcohol. Indeed, almost all brain-related conditions, such as autism, are on a spectrum, and can be diagnosed and treated accordingly. You are being simplistic in imposing a strict impermeable barrier between people with tendencies towards certain conditions but who live 'normal' lives, and those with a 'real' mental illness.
To be fair, most people's belief systems are deeply-ingrained.

Rabbits breed like, well, rabbits. Good to eat, and their skin will keep you warm. Easy and cheap to raise etc, and helped keep this country going during the war. My dad used to shoot them with the gamekeepers son as a boy, just before ww2 and callup. A lot of folk kept domesticated ones too. Big source of food to this day in italy, malta and greece. Irreparable throw away modern "engineering". Just had a look at a pair of active PA speakers for a long term good customer with a gig on Saturday. As soon as the back was off I put it back on again after finding it had class D power amps powered by a SMPS, all SMD and in one "power brick". This is now common but as these were pushing 10 years old I said I'd take a look... I guess some will call it progress as when mass produced it makes them say 20% cheaper. Also lighter in weight... but, there are no performance improvements (the opposite if anything) and the only way these will live again is to get a new "power brick" from the manufacturer... Probably at most of the cost of a complete new active speaker....

Sadly, a lot of items now are deliberately designed not to be repairable. Virtually all consumer electronics and kitchen goods - held together by plastic barbed fixtures which when snapped into place cannot be removed. It is cheaper simply to throw the broken item away and replace it with a new one. :steam:

I got a new pet hate today, people who park ruddy great 4x4 I.C. cars in electric car charging spaces. Was sat at the airport waiting for my good lady, huge great car park half full but Mrs, I drive an X5 "don't you know" had to park her BMW across the only two electric car charging spaces. She did get her comeuppence though when she got back to her car and was verbally torn apart by 3 old ladies (the youngest of which must of been 75!) driving a snazzy little electric car. Put right in her place she was!

Two things are beginning to really bug me but I had better learn to be calm about them because they wont change.
1) The constant raising of inflections with just about everything they say. The mundane chat that they think is highlighted or makes them more interesting with a raised ending....save it for a eureka invention moment when it is actually important! :(
2) saying "Enjoy" when they hand you a plate of food. Have they served it not for me to enjoy. It goes without saying but they say it in that twee way that makes them feel they are doing their job. I would rather hear something more substantial to break the ice.....I hate small talk
I will let them know if I dont enjoy it....its almost like an instruction :(

Keen supermarket checkout staff calling me 'sir'. Nothing worse than being overly enthusiastic in a crappy job. That's another American thing I suppose. Do the job properly, yes, but no bullshit, thanks.
I often get addressed as 'Sir' in shops if I'm wearing a tie, or a suit. If school pupils do it though, I'm flabbergasted.
What does annoy me however is being asked "How are you today?" by shop assistants - it's none of their business. What they should be asking is "How can I help you (Sir)?".

An old neighbor broke me of that habit! She was an old crone with a wooden leg, and any time I appeared from my door she would suddenly be sweeping the porch. And if I accidentally asked how she was doing, it would turn into a 30 minute diatribe on her poor health and crappy life. After a time I learned not to ask! But, about once a week or so, I would make it a point to ask, and set and listen to her story. She got to be much less bothersome with that bit of patience. But I always hated it at work, to walk down the hall under the constant onslaught of, "how are you?", I learned to just say, "Good" and keep walking. It does seem that wasted bit of conversation could have been used more constructively? "Nice to see you", seems more appropriate.

When I was at school the back 2 benches in the biology lab were a masterpiece of graffiti, much of it obscene. The school is still there but I doubt the benches are, no doubt slung in a skip so as not to offend the sensibilities of contemporary 'students' as they seem to be called now. In my day you were a 'schoolboy' or just a 'boy' and a student was someone over 18 and at University, probably with long hair and a kaftan.
A pity about the benches, though, since they provided a welcome distraction from the misery of last period on a Wednesday biology class and would put the crap you see hung in the Tate Modern to shame.

After many wrong turns and frequent calls back to the taxi HQ for advice eventually we got there. The paintings were deep within the cave so one need a torch to view them, but the taxi driver who until then was unaware of their existence (and probably thought he had a 'right nutter' as a fare) was bowled over to see them and thanked me profusely for pointing them out to him. Made my day!. :)
Who are you now Barry, man, Indiana Jones?
Cool story though.
I won't tell you then of the trouble I had to go to to get to see a particular stupa (a Buddhist monument) in Laos. Or of the difficulty I had in leaving Albania, or of crossing into Guatamala from Honduras.
When you put something away for safe keeping and then when you want it the bloody pixies have moved it, as there is only me and the cat here this can be the only explanation.

I have enough difficulty traversing Southall Broadway!
Or when you go upstairs to do something, you forget what it was, do something else, and when you come down your remember the reason why you wanted to go upstairs in the first place! Think it's called 'getting old'.

Nothing to do with age as a rule. I've always been a bit prone to that. Probably a bit like going to the supermarket and leaving the shopping list behind, then trying to remember what you'd written on it! I never can (well not all of it anyway ).

I live in a bungalow so fortunately this only affects me when I forget that we haven't any stairs.

Coming home from a lovely if rather wet week in Keswick, ffs:(
I actually rather like the Lake District in the rain - very atmospheric! ;)
Marco.
If it wasn't for the rain, you wouldn't have the lakes.

I hate it when people don't post 'pm sent'. The amount of times i view a for sale thread, i send 'pm' ( with a' pm sent'), only to have a reply saying 'have had 5 pm's already, if all fall through you will be next, etc. You think you may be in with a chance as looks like no one interested in the item, due to no one posting 'pm sent'.

All the more frustrating when a seller places the advert on more than one forum. I recently responded within 10 minutes of a seller posting here, only to have a near instant PM reply saying that the item had been (provisionally) sold, but if the sale fell through I was third in the queue!
Yup, but I guess you can't blame folk for maximising the exposure their for sale item(s) get to potential customers :)
What annoys me more is the lazy-arses who don't take enough time to compose proper adverts, which both describe the item(s) for sale in sufficient detail (often there's no more than a couple of barely coherent sentences, typed in lower-case, because the arse-wipes responsible can't be bothered using a Shift key), and feature pictures that show off what's being advertised to its full potential.
Often one is faced with tiny pictures (so small you can barely see what it is they're supposed to represent), upside-down pictures, out of focus ones, ones that looks as if they've been taken inside a cave, they're so dark - I could go on!
Yet despite all that being obvious to the seller, at the point of seeing how the pics have turned out, they're still used for placing ads.... 'Fuck it, they'll do'.... It's the appliance of such minimal effort that boils my piss. And often this is when advertising the likes of £10k speakers!!
Just who do they expect is going to part with that kind of money, when faced with such a lazy/unprofessional advert....??
You can tell that the whole thing has been rushed, with an attitude of 'I just want paid, and can't be arsed doing much to earn it', with ads most likely being posted on a phone, on the bus into work, whilst eating a bag of crisps and having a fart....
OR..... Ads where you have to search through REAMS of yawn-inducing SHITE [the seller's 'life story'], to find the price being asked, often buried right in the middle of it all, as an 'afterthought'!!
What DA FUCK is that muppetry all about??

Those are the kind of ads placed by people who don't have much of a clue about anything else either.
Indeed, and also most likely the ones you'll get little joy from, should there be a problem, simply as a result of their obvious 'I don't give a damn' attitude. That's why I'd never buy from them.
Ads, placed in the classifieds section need to be:
1) Short and to the point, but also...
2) Well-written (spelled correctly) and feature more than one proper-sized, well-lit and in focus picture, posted the right way up, of whatever it is that's being advertised.
3) Published in such a way that the advertised price is OBVIOUS at first glance, without potential buyers having to search for it.
However, all of that should be basic common sense!
The other thing that *really* marinates my wank-oil, is folk who advertise stuff for sale (especially on ebay), then go on holiday/abroad on work, or whatever, and fail to mention that they won't be around until a certain date to answer any queries, or worse, SHIP THE GOODS YOU"VE JUST PAID THEM FOR!!
The sheer disorganised and haphazard way some folk live their lives these days, often beggars belief....

Then you have the ebay sellers who won't send a sold item or reply if you ask to collect, because the final price was not high enough for their liking. I've had that a couple of times. ebay/PayPal refunded my money.
Yeah, those fuckers should be given a royal cock-punching....
Marco.
some folk got out of bed wrong side today:D
Heh-heh... I'm fine, just keeping 'on-topic' with the theme of the thread! :D

I suppose, in theory, once the item is paid for it is your property and a small claims court could demand it be provided to the buyer. Not worth the aggro really.
I only buy from folk who have a lengthy and immaculate history as a rule(although occasionally broken). I prefer to pay a little more if needed to get a decent seller, not that I buy anything much now. When I got my dac I used the seller Jerry used so knew it would be ok and it was.

That happend to me. No monies changed hands, but I could not contact the seller. Ebay gave me his telephone number, but all telecons went unanswered. I got ebay to ban the seller.
And quite right, too. Those sort of folk are veritable scumbags. Too bad if you didn't get the price you wanted - that's called THE LUCK OF THE DRAW, and what auctions are all about, so HONOUR your commitment, FUCKHEAD!! :guns:
Marco.
Or put up a reserve price.
Here's something that really gets on my titties, spending ages cleaning my glasses properly only to see a bloody great smear on the lens when I put them back on. It's almost enough to make me have contact lenses again grrrrr
