I tried learning the guitar three times. Learnt all the fingerering, notes, scales, chords and so forth, but never persevered long enough to play a tune. I was a damn good classical pianist as a kid though. Became a teenager and left it all behind. Go figure!

I am just glad I took up the guitar last year, it's been really fun. I have a great teacher who I get on really well with, which I think is important. As yet my guitars have not multiplied out of control like hifi... just 2 guitars (well 3 if you count an old acoustic that's fallen apart!) and ONLY 3 guitar amps so far......oh maybe it is like hifi after all....

The expression 'night and day differences'
All good electronic equipment will sound pretty good in my experience. The differences are subtle. I have always found this, it's not just because my ears are now not what they were. Different is also not equal to better.
I spent a happy couple of hours with my hi-fi hat on this morning instead of my music hat. As Alan had waved his soldering iron yesterday, I had various combinations to compare. Quad 33/303, Quad 34/306, Creek passive/Leak Stereo20. I swapped around and tried every combination. The simple fact is that I could happily live with any of them. However, my preference, just, is the Quad34 and Leak Stereo 20, it does the subtle tones of guitar and the percussive aggression of the piano just a little better than the others and feels marginally more real.
Strangely, I noticed very little evidence of pipe and slippers - another pet hate:eyebrows:

Did you try the Quad '33'/Leak 'Stereo 20' combo?
Sure did. Very close but I just preferred the harmonics and mid tones of the guitar on the 34. I always listen to Paco Pena for testing purposes. The flamenco guitar he used has the usual fairly bright balance but also great sonority and evenness lower down. It's a great test of accuracy.
All this testing threw up a few surprises though and proved the importance of combinations. I got my Goldring Elan back from Alan yesterday and popped it into the OL RB250 on the OL TT and the combination just gels. I'm hard pushed to choose between that and the Dual now. The Dual has the Technics 205 in it and the OL with the Shure M75ED was nowhere close before. The Goldring is not an expensive cartridge but I really like the sound it makes in this TT.

Try the '303' with a 10K Passive see what yew fink..
As it 'appens...........that is what I used last week as the Stereo20 needed a magic soldering iron waved at it. Very good, in fact one of the combos I tried again this morning when comparing them all. I really like the 303. I did prefer the 50Ds though, they were very close to the Leak indeed, shame I had to sell them when we needed some dosh but such is life.
The simple fact is that the one I stayed with today and which gives me the most musical enjoyment is the 34/Stereo20.

TV stations who all broadcast their programmes at different volume levels, which can go from painfully quiet to deafening, thus forcing you, rather annoyingly, to have to keep adjusting the bloody volume all the time! :steam:

Let's have an official (and universally approved) 'loudness output-level standard' for all TV stations, so that we can set the volume on our TVs at our preferred level and leave it there!!

Just enjoying a couple of Perlas myself. Their are two strengths available around here. The regular in the green can and the extra strong in the black can. It's OK.
There's a Lech 'Pils' available that's pretty decent.
Recently tried 'Chang' Thai bottled lager from Tescos. It's lovely stuff. Very clean and smooth and tastes like a top quality imported lager did thirty or more years ago. Recommended.
By the way I like spiders. They keep the bugs down. Just don't pick up a larger Woodlouse Spider, False Widow or Stone Spider. They bite!
Having a St Etienne bottle of lager from Aldi (very good and a lot better than the cans) and a couple of Talisker (slightly smokey) whiskys.

A more manly term would be 'snake oil', which is redolent of the Old West and the travelling Medicine Man, selling cures to the open-mouthed hicks and hillbillies.

I find it easier to hate 'things', because I don't have to make allowances for them, or put myself in their place.

What about lazy-arsed businesses (restaurants in particular) who, once having closed down for whatever reason, fail also to close down their websites, leaving them 'as is' for many months afterwards, thus giving the impression that the companies in question still exist/are in business, until you visit their physical address, in order to use their services, and discover (to your considerable inconvenience) that they've gone 'ta-ta bella'!!
Marco.
You'll often find a telephone number on the website.
A phone call beforehand saves all that tiresome tutting and muttering when you find they've closed down .....
And you'll have had no inconvenience ;)

Teachers in my day were mostly violent and mentally deranged. Many had come out of the ww2 as ex pows and had sadistic tendencies with any but the smartest kids. Junior school teachers were all old spinsters who enjoyed belting and slapping you for any reason. In my dads time they were even worse. The things done to him beggar belief. Nowadays im glad to say the teachers are much better on the whole. Ive met many at parents meets back when my daugher was at school(nearly 20 years ago now) and they were very decent and interested...even dedicated...it was an eye opener i have to say.

The weirdest was my teacher in the final year of primary school. He was an ex-WW2 veteran and used to clout everyone regardless of gender or size, often for no good reason. My nephew attended the same school about 20 years later, and a while back was reminiscing about his favourite teacher, who he described as 'a really nice, gentle old bloke'. It was that same teacher; mellowed by the passage of time, restrained by legislation on corporal punishment, or under better medication.

Yes some right screwed up old hags at my primary school. Only the boys got physical punishment for some reason, and it wasn't delivered with any sort of professional detachment, it was done with real nastiness.
At secondary school some teachers would whack you unexpectedly and for no reason at all just to 'keep you on your toes' - but there was never any malice in it.
Nowdays they would be prosecuted and chucked in prison. Bizarre how in a generation it has gone from being perfectly acceptable to one of the worst things you can do.

Marketing calls - day off work yesterday, they called me twice on my landline. Asking for someone I've never heard of (I've had the number for 18 years) then when I told them they had the wrong number for whoever they wanted (some foreign-sounding name) they started on me - can I answer some questions?
No I bloody can't - or won't - if they want me as a consultant they can pay me. £40/hour sounds fair.
Bloke doesn't take no for an answer, starts banging on so fast I can't interrupt him to say 'I'm putting the 'phone down now' so I had to just put the 'phone down whilst he was in full flow. Which I don't like to do with anyone but what is the option?
Two hours later 'phone rings again, same people - almost sure - this time another odd sounding name. Didn't let them get started this time just said no thanks and hung up.
Then today same again - this time asking to speak to the 'man of the house' - told them to take my number off their database.
I guess when I am out at work as I usually am my 'phone is ringing all the time with these wankers trying to get through to me. God knows why they want to canvas me, unless they are interested in the demographic of someone who only spends money on old hi-fi and Guinness.
I'd get rid of the landline altogether but it comes in a bundle with the tv and internet. I can't even dial out on it as the 'phone is so old the keypad has perished.

Can't you just unplug the phone? Is that a bit too techie, like?
When I (very rarely) get these calls, I just take the piss and waste their time as much as I can (by various humorous methods), until they eventually hang up! :D
Fuck it, if they're going to invade my space, uninvited, then they can be my bitch for a bit.... :eyebrows:
Marco.
I've actually abandoned having a land line altogether now - not because of nuisance calls (I used to get very few of them) but because I never used it. I just rely on my mobile phone now.
Occasionally I get unsolicited selling calls at work which is very weird as you have to go through the switchboard to get my extension. It can be dialled directly if you know the extension number but that number isn't directly available from anywhere.

I sometimes get calls at work from people trying to sell me a credit-checking service. Ironically many of them are from the company that sell us the system we already use. I asked them once if they didn't keep a list of companies they already supplied so they knew not to call them. 'That's a good idea' was the response.

Women with bad breath!
Anyone with bad breath!!!!
What I can't understand is where their partner clearly doesn't either smell it or doesn't care (a friend has bad halitosis and has had it for years). A lot of it is to with bad teeth or rotting matter between the teeth. This gives off a gas (methyl mercaptan) which is unmistakeably stinky and no amount of brushing the teeth will get rid of it. Flossing might help but some other agent would be required to clear the shit and bacteria out that is festering there. There is a product (CB12) which is said to get rid of it. Thankfully I have lost most of my teeth so this isn't an issue for me. If it was I would hate to think that people would shrink with revulsion when I opened me gob.

I'm not rude. I just rip the pish out of them. We've got caller display on the phone, so as soon as the word "International" comes up, I know it's some idiot in a foreign call centre, so I put on a foreign accent (usually Indian) and kid on I can't understand them, or I give it the Fonejacker thing and say: "Would you be liking my sort code and bank account number to wire the monies?"
A mate was visiting once, where I kept this fucker going (on speakerphone) for about 10 minutes like that, before I broke down and lost it watching him pissing himself laughing!! :D

If you can find stock Sainsbury's are selling these off, picked up a triple pack for £25 on Friday. They are selling them off as they have been replaced with the 8600.
They look pretty good Sean - I'll see if my local Sainsbury has them in.
I too have caller display and if the word "International" comes up, or a number I don't recognise, I ignore it completely.
I speak to so few folk now their calls would be a diversion lol...even they dont call :(
:D
That stiff clear sharp packaging you have to cut with scissors
Could not agree more with that. I once asked an employee to grab some heavy duty scissors from the hardware as we were on a building site with no other trades (he was unaware that I required them to open a "stiff clear sharp packaging" that housed a small water pump) He came back with a heavy duty pair.........you guest it........ in a........."stiff clear sharp packaging"
I did not or could not make that up! The scissors got opened with a 12 ins angle grinder and when freed i used the scissors to open the pump:steam:

Reaching a point in life where I need a pair of glasses to find my glasses! frustrating.
(found them by the way, otherwise I'd not be posting :))
For me it is simple: bad manners, reckless behaviour at the expense of others, and positive discrimination.
Losers and grumps, who appear to have nothing else better to do with their 'lives' than continually being involved in petty squabbles with others, and the bitter (and often jealous) miserable malcontents of this world, who resent those that are happy, and try to drag people down to their pathetic, suicide-depressing level of discontentment.
Really, anyone who resents what others have, which they don't, and can't shut up about it, or 'dry their eyes' and deal with it in a constructive way. Also those who resent the contented, confident and self-assured, and see it as misplaced 'ego', hold age-old grudges for eternity, and are embroiled in perpetual negativity.
My message to those fuckwits? Cheer up and get a life! ;)

People who get themselves big cars then can't manoeuvre them in car parks.
There's a particular local car park that, I will admit, is quite tight but they all pull into the spaces rather than reversing in then can't get out! Sat waiting for nearly fifteen minutes to park through the week whilst these twats jockeyed their behemoths in and out of their spaces trying to get the right angle to miss the car behind and pull away and failing miserably. It wasn't until an elderly gentleman got out of his car and lent a hand that they managed it.

If I was going to rape a closet, would I be a potential criminal? Is sex with an item of furniture illegal unless the furniture has consented?
Are you asking on behalf of a friend?
We should really have a separate thread for this legal stuff.
If I was impersonating a lawyer I'd say that sex with a closet is within the law. Tell them they are fine to carry on.

It is a fascinating sub-set of the erotic world. I looked into it. There was a whole subculture for years but it only came to light in 1968 when a film came out where an ebony nightstand has it off with a pine chest of drawers - possibly a Tallboy, details are sketchy.

Is impersonating a lawyer a criminal offence?
Apparently it is. At least a friend, who actually is a lawyer, tells me it is.

However, I don't think that just saying one is a lawyer, when really you just empty the bins, is a crime; the crime is when you give advice, or charge, on the basis of being a qualified lawyer when you are not.

Loony Euro legislation problems. Latest example, LIDL recall tinned Herring because cans don't carry a warning saying 'may contain fish'. :steam:

Funny how they are shit-hot about this sort of thing but didn't notice that everyone and his dog were selling horse meat instead of beef for a decade or more.
Sainsburys have an unerring habit of discontinuing any product I buy there. I don't have a nectar card so they must follow me around the shop or something.
Recently they started selling my favourite chocolate bar

Noticed they were running a bit low the other week so I bought what they had left, just in case. Needless to say they have not re-stocked.
Having been re-addicted I discovered that you can buy them off Amazon - trouble is they are only made in the USA so costs nearly a quid a bar even though you have to buy a box of 18. Sainsbury were charging 65p

They say "crime doesn't pay", but do you know of any poor lawyers?

They say "crime doesn't pay"
Depends who's doing the crime. Most criminals are opportunist dimwits. But there are clever criminals, who aren't even 'on the radar', let alone getting caught.

No, but I know some "egotistical bastards", posing as solicitors, who can't spell, or punctuate sentences properly for toffee! ;)
Marco.

Is that a confession, Geoff? :eyebrows: ;)

Would that be the 'I'm the only marxist on the forum' who is also prone to sophistry and cod philosophy?
Yes, together with an unhealthy propensity (albeit deluded) for believing that he's always right, and not to mention a penchant for changing nappies... ;)
A prolific 'argument winner' too, apparently, although I have seen scant evidence of such other than in said solicitor's head.

I can't stand most of the Upper class people here in the UK. The same thing goes to their Lower class counterparts.
I just simply dislike their bloody ways, followed by the way they speak and their annoying accents!
Call me a miserable sod if you like...I'll take it as a compliment :)
