reminds me - at work if you get a pie from the van all there is is 'Daddys' brown sauce to put on it. People's lack of discernment is shocking. Nevertheless when I complained no-one understood what I was saying. I was accused of being a prima-donna and that 'brown sauce is brown sauce.' In any case I bought a big bottle of HP -with my own money - and took in.

Now guess what? No-body goes anywhere near the 'Daddys' shite and my bottle of HP is already half way down even though I've only used it once. Just goes to show.

You could always have a butter pie, no meat in that. And you should anyway, if it's a Friday - you should know that :)

Marco
01-09-2019, 12:29
Butter pie - does such a thing exist? Never heard of it.

I've always been very fussy about the contents of pies [yes, THOSE ones, too:eyebrows:], and sausages, as cheap ones are bulked out with all sorts of shit, and the 'meat filling' usually consists of fatty entrails and other disgusting types of offal.

Yes, that's what's in yer average Ginsters and such like! :spew: :vomfest:

I don't really 'do' pork pies either, unless they're from a quality source, such as Melton Mowbray. For me, with pies it's normally the steak or game variety, served piping hot with lots of rich gravy and creamy mash... Yum, yum!:)

Never heard of a butter pie? I refuse to believe it's a Lancashire thing.

My understanding is that Catholics couldn't or wouldn't eat meat on a Friday, so butter pies came about - basically a meat & potato pie without the meat, and butter added to the potato (I assume that Welsh/Scottish/Italian foodies are aware of potatoes having butter added sometimes).

Pigmy Pony

Dunno, I'm not a big pie eater. Can't think of the last time I had one. And yes, your understanding is correct, but we only practice that on Good Friday. Pies are typically British, and not something that Italians would eat. However, *good* [read as homemade] ones can be fab.

One of my favourite things to eat in country pubs, is a good game pie [with venison and such like inside], using proper shortcrust pastry - none of yer puff shit!:)

Any bakery shop which sells pies probably. Actually no. I've just had a quick poke round tinternet and according to Wikipedia it IS a Lancashire thing. If we ever meet up I'll try to remember to bring you one.

Grant - NO! You can't have ham in a butter pie, well you can If you want a ham & potato pie instead of a butter pie.

Actually your version sounds more appealing. I'm not a fan of butter pies meself. My stomach can handle just about anything, if it can get past my taste buds it won't give me any problems Butter pies though give heartburn, and they don't taste good enough to be worth the grief.

HP every time for me, essential with baked beans, and just about everything that isn't a pudding. Although when I was a kid my mum used to buy something called 'Hammonds Chop Sauce'. Can't remember the taste, but it was brown.

I can handle a bit of Heinz salad cream, but mayonnaise is just wrong. But you try to buy a ready-made sandwich without mayo from Tesco or wherever - good luck with that. The assumption is that everyone likes that shite. I blame the EU :(

I remember that Hammonds sauce stuff but like you can't remember if it was any good. I kinda remember it was a bit "fruity" but hey ho I've been drunk since.

I guess it's all about what you got fed as a kid. To this day I don't give a feck about any "deluxe" tomato ketchup. I buy only the cheapest Asda white label stuff, cos if it doesn't have that vinegar tang it simply isn't going near my chips.

I love a great sausage and the difference to the carp that was around when I was a kid is much loved.. BUT even now we still buy the odd packet of the cheapest "Walls" (other brands are available) pink things because they have that smell / taste /texture that is pure nostalgia. Wonder how many kids get Sausage Egg & Chipsfor a Tuesday Dinner these days...

I'm comparing it to every other brand of brown sauce I've been subjected to, in many cafes, and butty vans too numerous to mention. Usually the brand is unknown as the proprietor decant it into an unmarked bottle, but they never compare favourably with HP.

You do so remind me of my brother - he gets quite evangelical about things that I don't normally spend much time thinking about, and tries to make my not caring look like a bad thing. Like his favourite crusade of the last year or so: why would anyone be so stupid as to vote leave? When I flippantly replied I did it to shit on David Cameron all he said was 'Wow'. which is Tony-talk for 'Well you are a thick twat aren't you'.

Lol - are you another bland/boring eater?:D;)

Fair enough if you don't like sweet or fruity things, though. When it comes to 'condiment sauces', brown or ketchup, I often find that I prefer some supermarket own-brands to the 'big boys', as often with established brands you're just paying for the name, and that annoys me, as I hate being ripped off like that, or behaving like a brainwashed sheep [victim of a subliminal marketing campaign]!

I hate feeling like I'm being 'led' to buy something, as it goes completely against the free-thinker in me.

So.... Try Sainsbury's own-brand brown sauce in the squeezy bottle. I also prefer that to HP, and also either Lidl or Aldi's own Ketchup to Heinz. It's more tomatoey. Germans LOVE ketchup, so tend to do it well, and it's quite a bit cheaper than Heinz:)

Lots of other things come under the same category, such as pasta sauces, if you don't make your own. You can do MUCH better than Dolmio!

Fair enough, but the last bit could've been for a variety of reasons. The best Chinese food is the authentic stuff, not the bastardised shit for European palates, full of Monosodium-glutamate, sold here in most takeaways. The former is usually much lighter and tastier, but you usually need to go to the 'Chinatown' area of a large city to find suitable restaurants, or better still eat it at the home of someone who's Chinese.

You could also try making it yourself, sourcing ingredients from a proper Chinese supermarket. Then you'll know exactly what's going into what you're eating!:)

That stuff's DIRE. It's officially the unhealthiest 'junk food' you can eat! Basically due to the copious amounts of salt in the batter mix.

It's piss-easy to make your own 'southern-fried chicken' at home, which is a damn sight healthier and tastier!

As you stated earlier your preference for sweet/fruity sauce your recommendation for Sainsbury's own brand is likely to be similarly at odds with my tastes. Oh well, we like what we like.

Anyway, after tomorrow I'll be going 'off the grid' for 7 days, enjoying some Bulgarian cuisine, which sometimes is actually quite good. Though the kavarma is not unlike some of Anita's 'invented' dishes she concocts :)

No, Sainsbury's own-brand brown sauce ISN"T sweet or especially fruity. It's quite different from the Tiptree one, but I also like it and prefer it to HP. So maybe give it a go?:)

Anyway, so are you off to Bulgaria? Nice one. Not been there, but quite fancy it. Enjoy, and take plenty of pics to show us!

Marco.

P.S The local red wine (which they don't export to other countries) is apparently rather good, and cheap as chips, so give it a go and report back.

Not tried their brown sauce but did have a bottle of the tomato ketchup. it was ok and different but i preferred Heinz(maybe from old preference). Tesco used to sell it.. Sure its made by Wilkins. I dont use brown much now but next time i see a bottle i will get some

The Tiptree/Wilkin ketchup is particularly good, better even than their brown sauce, but honestly next time you're in Lidl, try the 'Batts' one - it's phenomenally good for the money:

https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/MiddleofLidl.htm?articleId=320

As is Ikea's own Swedish-made ketchup (and mustard) - the stuff that they put on their in-store hotdogs!:)

Or you could argue that preferring to buy niche premium brands is a result of their 'Don't follow the herd' style marketing....

Big name brands become big name brands because they sell well, not the other way around.

Extra fart-factor, eh?:D

No, we used either Aldi or Lidl's reduced salt ones, and add some tomato puree. You can't tell the difference then, and I find Heinz beans a little too sweet, not that I have baked beans very often. Del does though, because she's veggie, and they are good for you (in moderation).

Possibly, but that certainly doesn't apply to us. We only buy 'premium niche brands' *if* to us they're worth it, i.e. taste better. For us, that's always the only consideration.

Pretty much all big brands started out as very small brands. E.g Coca Cola, McDonalds, KFC, Heinz, Kellog . They got to be big brands with shedloads to spend on marketing because they were good sellers from the off.

yes marketing is subliminal but that also applies to marketing for niche brands. There's only two types of people, those who think marketing does not affect them and those who realise it affects everyone.

In answer to your question in earlier post - people like what they are used to - especially with taste of food. That's why chains like McDonalds go to efforts to ensure the product tastes the same no matter where in the world you are buying it. It's impossible to quantify 'better' in that regard. There are plenty of burgers that are 'better' than maccy -D but people want what they are used to. So in a foreign place they'll go to Mcdonalds rather than take a chance at 'Joe's Burgers' or whatever.

Of course it affects everyone. I'm not denying that, although I don't allow it to control me. I'm simply saying that if you're addicted to big-name brands, and automatically reach for those every time you go shopping, then it might not be just because you like the taste!;)

Well that's fine, but that doesn't necessarily apply to everyone.I don't *just* like what I'm used to.

I like to experiment and widen my horizons, not just with food, but in all aspects of life. Even when I'm going out for a Chinese meal or a curry, I don't know which dishes I'm going to order until I get there! If I behaved as you've outlined as 'the norm' (people like what they're used to), I'd already know what I wanted even before I looked at the menu!:D

And yes I know plenty of folk like that..... And my shopping habits are the same as the above. Out with of essentials, I don't really know what I'm going to buy until I get to the shop. And when there, I don't automatically reach for big-name brands. I study the labels and the prices of the products, and based upon that, make an informed decision. Very little is a 'done deal' before I get there.

Anyway, you still haven't answered my question. What would you do in the scenario I presented? Stubbornly stick to HP, just because "that's what you're used to", or next time buy the sauce you preferred the taste of?:)

I don't think I've ever eaten anything that has made me puke.

Actually that's not true - I did make something that caused me to throw up about an hour after I had eaten it. My mother had gone to spend a few days with a friend of hers, so Dad and I were left to fend for ourselves. I decided to make a shepherds pie for dinner. I took some onions from the vegetable rack and did the cooking. At the time I though the onions to be much smaller than usual and were surprised they were in a brown paper bag, but didn't give it much thought.

The pie tasted a little odd, but we eat it all the same. About an hour later my father said "I've just been sick, are you OK?", to which I replied "Yes, I 've been sick as well". We decided to keep quiet about it so as not to alarm Mum. However when she returned, a day later she said "Where are those tulip bulbs I put in the vegetable rack? I want to plant them out." That explained everything!

I agree. The hungrier you get the more appealing any sort of food becomes.

You see it with cats when you buy the cheapo food because there's none of the good stuff left in the shop. They turn their noses up at it at first but give it an hour or so and they're scoffing it down. (When they think you're not looking of course).

But children do take an irational dislike to certain foods, and you can't force them to eat it. At the age of five or so, I suddenly decided I hated cheese and wouldn't eat it. If my mother had made a big deal out of it, it might have caused problems. As it was, she just stopped giving me anything with cheese in it. Well, quite. The only meal that wasn't wolfed down in our house was liver and bacon (Thursday's meal if I remember correctly). Sometimes it was fine, and we always liked the bacon, but sometimes the liver was on the 'chewy' side, so we'd leave it. There was no 'you don't leave the table unless you've cleared your plate'. The dog got the leftovers.

I used to hate Wednesday as it was 'Hot Pot' night. I mean we used to eat it but it was so bland. My mother was not much of a cook and hardly ate anything herself anyway.

We never had any of that 'clear your plate' nonsense either. If you didn't eat it you went hungry, no-one was overly concerned. My mother would just serve up the food then go and do something else so there was no 'supervision' in any case.

Completely true.

Apart from breakfast and Sunday dinner we always ate whilst watching the telly. That's a habit I never got out of. Anytime I sit down with a meal I'm looking for the remote.

My father grew up in the Americas and was quite discerning about food, coffee and so on. Most of my 'tastes' in food are exactly the same as his. Same goes for one of my brothers but not the other which is weird. My mother grew up very poor in Liverpool, and for her cooking and eating was just another necessity that you got out of the way before moving on to the next essential task at hand.

Sure, but you can minimise that happening and give them the best chance of appreciating different types of food, from the earliest possible age [I'm talking months old] by introducing babies, not just children, to different flavours of REAL, rather than processed food.

My mum said that she virtually never gave me bottled/bought baby food, and instead simply purified fresh raw vegetables, made it into a pulp, and fed me that. It was a damn sight cheaper and healthier, plus it introduced me to the flavour of REAL food/veg from the earliest possible age.

Then as soon as I could digest solids, I was given different types of fresh fish, and chicken, plus rice and pasta. Red meat didn't come until later. And that's how I was brought up. What was given to me, or on the table for everyone else to eat, was what I ate.

No ridiculous separate meals from my parents, as you see nowadays, or worse, separate meals for each kid, as one doesn't like this, and other doesn't like that. Fuck that bullshit:doh: All the parents are doing is making a rod for their own backs.... And don't talk to me about kids all eating their different meals in separate parts of the house - another load of ridiculous nonsense, which they've been allowed to get away with!

No wonder the family unit, and closeness of such in most homes now, isn't anything like it used to be. *Where possible*, families should all sit and eat together at the table, the same food and at the same time.

Anyway, it's no coincidence therefore that now I can eat almost anything, and appreciate good food!

And my parents and grandparents were all brought up the same way. Quite simply, faddy/fussy eating parents, breed faddy, fussy-eating kids, as the kids take their cues, and develop their eating habits (and everything else), from YOU, so set them a good example, early on, if you want them to grow up healthily!

Is it me or are people just becoming nasty.

So this morning I went to Tesco to get some milk and a bun for me and the builder doing a garden wall, at one time I would have built it but I'm not up to it now.

Anyway I was following this car into the car park and on the left where a long line of empty parking paces and the chap in front indicates left and pulls across the line of spaces and slows down. I carry straight on passing him and about another 20 yards indicate left and start to manouvore reversing into a space immediately next to a pedestrian walk way and zebra crossing, in the same line of spaces already mentioned. Guess what as I am backing into the space the same chap blocks the space having driven over the pedestrian walkway and pulled into the space, I hit my brakes and the horn, then pull forward and reverse into two spaces further down.

Before I get out the car I have decided to say nothing, as I get out this chap walks up to me and says "Sorry about that I thought I was doing you a favour", what? So I just say "Well that wasn't a very sensible manoeuvre." and go to walk away. As I do the chap start shouting abuse at me and swearing, so I stop and walk up to him and say sorry I did not mean to offend you, and offer my hand to shake , with he does, he then carries on to shout and being even more rude, at which point I tell him to just calm down, turned around and walked away to the store, he continued to hurl more abuse and swearing. During the 40 second or so altercation his wife just stood there and watched, and what really surprised me was that this nasty man was at least in his late 60's and certainly should have known better.

I returned to my car 5 minutes later and what was interesting was the nasty man had moved his car presumably either because he thought I might damage it if I was angry or possibly call the police and be waiting for him. I did carefully inspect my car to make sure he had not touched before I drove off and luckily it was OK.

I just hate angry, nasty aggressive people who enjoy trying to upset and assert themselves on others.

Pet hates .............. when people 'quote' the whole of a long post full of large photos, which has only just been posted, often just to make a short 1 line comment. So I have to scroll through the whole thing again just to get to their brief pearl of wisdom.

For some obscure psychological reason this drives me absolutely batty. :steam::donk::brickwall::ban::facepull:

OK, got it off my chest and I'm feeling better now.

Hi Jerry, can you put it back on your chest for just a minute, to take me through how to edit quotes? I've noticed others are able to do this, but I've no idea how. I'd ask Marco, but he tends to monkey around with my posts. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if he replied to this, posing as you ;)

Click on 'Reply With Quote', which will copy the quote and allow you to edit it. You can then add your own comments and reply.

As a matter of etiquette, it is considered bad form to change the wording of a quote, or even to correct spelling and errant apostrophes. Just delete anything in the quote you don't want to comment on, including images (which is what prompted this discussion). Sometimes, to draw attention to a particular part of a quoted post, you can highlight the words in question in bold or italic font, or change their colour.

Not a big fan of the new Pigmy McPigface, but as with most things I'm too lazy to care :) Thing is, I'm too thick to post pics, and I have tried, even succeeded once or twice. Anyway the paucity of pics make my posts look more grown up, sort of like Nip and Fluff but without the illustrations.

Exactly who it was aimed at :D

Marco
04-01-2020, 11:22
Ha - thought so! :D

What I always found beyond hilarious (as I love unintentional irony), whenever I read his shite, was that *we* were always the "sad bastards with no life", whilst all the time he was posting tens of thousands of posts on his shitehole, full of mindless bile, under various different guises, spewing hatred at me in particular, the same old cack over and over (and over), and wasting what spare time he had, in between cleaning his oven (haha) and wanking off to porn - yet *we* were the sad bastards with no life!!:mental:

All he ever does is work > post shite on his shitehole > eat > sleep > wank > shit > clean his oven > repeat! The sum total of what he cares about is money and material possessions:doh:

He has no discernible relationship I can see with his wife (they never go on holiday together, out for a meal, to the cinema or anything) - certainly not a proper marriage in the true sense of the word - and despite his (claimed) 'wealth' is clearly one UNHAPPY puppy [he just doesn't seem to know how to let go and enjoy himself]/has no concept of how to have FUN, and yes therefore, the very definition of a "sad bastard with no life".

:exactly:

Anyway, maybe one day he'll take a good look in the mirror and acknowledge his pathetic existence? I truly pity him, as I could NEVER live the so-called 'life' he leads.

Is it me or are people just becoming nasty

...

I just hate angry, nasty aggressive people who enjoy trying to upset and assert themselves on others.I agree, though I was once slightly nasty to someone in a queue at the supermarket. Someone In front of me was dithering about which queue to get into, and I commented on this - hedging her bets as to which would be quicker, and possibly intending to allow her companion with a trolley in front of me.. This provoked a reaction - no more details than that - and made me feel bad - but the reason I was/seemed grumpy was because I had a really bad cold and just wanted to get my purchase (only one or two - may have been something like a pack of tissues, or box of neurofen) and go home to bed and the girl was making this hard. I was made to look bad, so not worth trying to explain my way out of that for the benefit of others in the queue.

Grumpy people may not be bad all the time. Your guy sounds as though he made a habit of it.

O James been there before. I wont entertain that shite no more. I buy but never sell now.

I once sold a utterly mint top line Technics amplifier for the customer to say it was not working and opened a return dispute. i knew full well it was.. I got it back & it looked like the customer had dragged the front fascia across the floor, was the original heavy box & packing cos it was NOS when i bought it.. Yet there was sod all i could do about it. I think there are too many loopholes on Auction sales the customers exploit. Maybe it be better that all 2nd hand equipment is sold on a none tested basis with no ability to return/refund. Take your chances cos that is basically what you need to be doing anyway.

Marco
03-02-2020, 10:48
Defo... But you see, Alan's always had a young outlook/mindset and keeps himself active. Trust me though, if you want to stay looking young, the former is just as important as the latter, arguably more so!;)

For me, staying young largely comes from within... Too many folk, IMO, 'become old' before their time, simply because they *think* they are, and behave that way, so they start looking like it, too! Women are often the worst offenders, in that respect, after having kids.

The thinking seems to be: 'Now I've popped out a sprog that's the end of my youth!' That old-fashioned 'mumsy'/granny look in your 20s or 30s, really isn't a good one, girls...

Stress too, or lack of it, also plays a part, as does genuinely feeling happy with life. That's why, if you can, retiring early is a good idea, as it removes the daily stress attached to holding down a job and being told what to do.

I'm not defending the silly cow, and also hate the advert in question, but perhaps her statement could be explained by the fact that our bodies are looked after by doctors, and our mouths, dentists. Hence, toothpaste is a dental product, in the same way another dedicated product would be for some other part of the body...

No? Ok then, she's just a thick bint!

That reminds me of the ancient cover of Private Eye, where the Queen is reading the Queen's Speech in Parliament, and the speech bubble reads 'I hope you don't think I wrote any of this rubbish'.

We’re talking about it and that’s what advertising execs want ! I’ve heard from a lovely lady marketing exec who was so so proud of her latest tv ad and when I blurted out that I couldn’t stand the advert she said “ good it had an effect and you now remember it “ [emoji848][emoji848]
Never saw her again and she was very horny too

Was Dr Pepper actually a medical doctor?

Unsurprisingly, the answer is 'maybe'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr_Pepper#Name

'Theories about the origins of the soft drink's name abound.[12][13] One possible reason that the name was chosen was the practice, common at the time of the drink's creation, of including Dr. in the names of products to convey the impression that they were healthful.[14]

A theory often cited is that the drink was named after an actual doctor, one Charles T. Pepper of Rural Retreat, Virginia. Morrison may have named the drink after the doctor in gratitude for Pepper having given Morrison his first job.[14][15] However, Milly Walker, Collections Manager / Curator for the Dublin (Texas) Dr Pepper Bottling Co. Museum, has stated that U.S. Census records show that a young Morrison lived in Christiansburg, Virginia, 40 miles (64 km) away from Rural Retreat, and that "there is not one piece of evidence that Morrison ever worked for Charles T. Pepper in Rural Retreat".[16] Another story tells of Morrison naming the drink after Charles T. Pepper because the doctor granted Morrison permission to marry Pepper's daughter,[17] but the girl in question was only eight years old at the time that Morrison moved to Waco.[14][16][18]

A Dr. Pepper of Christiansburg is another possible inspiration for the soft drink's name. In the census that shows Morrison living in Christiansburg and working as a pharmacy clerk, a Dr. Pepper is recorded on a subsequent page. Since census takers at this time were walking from door to door, and these census entries are close to each other in the record, it appears that Morrison and this Dr. Pepper lived close to each other. Furthermore, Pepper is recorded as having a 16-year-old daughter, named Malinda or Malissa.[16]'

Joe
08-06-2020, 20:02
And what about Dr. Hook?

He had a Medicine Show, so obvs he was a real doctor, though having a hook instead of a hand must have made surgery difficult. I've just realised that the word for the place you go to see a doctor is the same word that's used to describe a medical operation.

Macca
08-06-2020, 20:11
Hook could just have been his name. Like Hook in 'Zulu'. He didn't have a hook. Although it would have come in useful in that situation I suppose.

Lame-arse companies just use COVID as an excuse frankly. Amazon have no problem delivering next day and quicker than promised - and I know a thing or two about Amazon deliveries (£20k per year spent for the business with them).

I can hardly be bothered to look elsewhere these days; I’ll only be disappointed.

I doubt the work there really is hard though. These days "hard working" just entails getting out of bed each morning and turning up :) In the olden days it was just called "having a job".

And you try telling the kids of today that, and they won't believe you.

Marco
16-01-2021, 08:22
It's not a case of the work necessarily being hard, but the long hours, being at your employer's constant beck and call, re overtime, etc, and essentially the demands put on your time and how that impacts on your personal life - which as a result these days is often non-existent!

All right if you're single with no family, and only yourself to consider - but otherwise simply horrendous. People need to be able to LIVE, rather than merely *exist*.

There's too much of that in the workplace these days, with bosses running roughshod over their staff, as because they're *desperate* for the job (often in order to pay significant debt), they can push them to the limits. Then when they do get a day off, they're too frazzled to do anything other than sleep...!

What sort of a 'life' is that?

We need stronger unions, and more of a militant mentality in the workforce, instead of subservient sheep!

Thank you. Morning rant now over;)

actually the hardest job physically i did was working in the refractory brick works. 32ton a day to make bonus. Took you a while to get fit enough and your skin to get hard enough, but once you got there it was a breeze. Just shut your brain down and graft.

When I was younger I used to opt out so I could do 70 hour weeks, as I needed the money.

'Hard work never harmed anyone.' That was what you used to hear from the older generations when I was a youth.

Occasionally you;d get a boss who thought they were god almighty and start pushing people around, they never lasted always got sacked or left because that's counter-productive in the long run.

My hat goes off to you Grant, you've had some really tough jobs. I doubt many youngsters today could or would do that, I know I couldn't.

My job certainly isn't tough, apart from some shit weather. Anita's dad always calls me hard working every time we go on holiday or buy something nice. As in 'well he works hard, he deserves a holiday'. All I have to do is turn up when I said I would, and never have any 'sickies'. Piece of piss really.
