Oh yeah, and one of them was my mate's older brother (actually the fella who got me interested in hi fi). He'd known me since I was fifteen, met most of my girlfriends, met my wife, and knew I had two young kids. His current partner was sat beside him the whole time. And did any of this put him off?

He spent most of the evening trying, probably thought that persistence (and beer) would eventually wear me down. It didn't. I made sure I left the pub before them, saying if I didn't get home soon my missus would be locking me out. Cue one last effort: "If you end up locked out you can come and stay at mine".

When I saw him a few days later he was suitably embarrassed, telling me how extremely pissed he was. The other blokes that have come on to me over the years have all been strangers, and that's ok, but this bloke was virtually family!

:eek::eek:

Well Steve...

Persistence (and beer) would definitely wear me down as well.... however I know exactly what you mean...

Why do guys 'try it on' when they know there is no possibility of success ?

Guys are such a strange thing to me....

I know, I'll never understand them. The willy goes where it wants to go, and its owner blindly follows. I think it's a hormone thing.

Marco, I would never keep a Yorkie in my pocket - chocolate coming into my possession is eaten immediately. Saving any for later is never going to happen :) Besides there ain't room for anything else down there :D

On a bad day, mine pongs of rotting manure, mixed with sewerage effluent and a soupçon of putrified silage. However, it always 'exits' in neatly-compacted stools, so they slip down the pan easily, without sticking to the sides and depositing unsightly skid marks!:eyebrows:

I assume you routinely examine yourself BeV - is that "ouchy"? My partner went to her GP after examining herself for an opinion and didn't find the experience uncomfortable at all. Just to confirm, she then went to the hospital for a mammogram, and again the experience was not uncomfortable.

Lol - they're lovely, but I rarely eat cakes. Not really a cake or dessert person. Nice ice-cream is my thing, but only occasionally:)

I'm more into eating 'proper food', such as the other stuff you mentioned. Also, if you eat properly (have filling meals), you don't need to snack and eat junk in between them. Custard, on the rare occasions we have it, we make ourselves, as bought stuff is vile in comparison. Surprised you don't!;)

Tony, I'm betting (if you're not already familiar) that you would love this "custard pie" they sell in France. It's a sort of thick flan and the "custard" looks like a blow torch has been used on the top, and the custard is so stiff you can pick it up without it falling apart.

Someone said it was called "flan patissiere". Which may be correct, all I know is when I'm in France I can't walk past a patisserie without buying one.

Protein is nearly the same calories per gram as fat, so if it's not repairing tissue, or whatever protein does, it'll end up on your waistline. Amazing really that I was so skinny, if I stood sideways and stuck out my tongue I looked like a zip.

Yeah but you've got to put the aeroplanes somewhere...oh wait, I think I misread that.

I don't have much of a problem with hangers as Mrs. P has them all for her outfits. My share of the wardrobe space is a pile of clothes on a shelf. so the stuff at the bottom never gets a look in. I don’t like them at all but they don’t bring me out in an searing rage, unlike flip flops. And Crocs, come to that

In fact, the only advantage flip flops have over Crocs is that, back in my London commuting days, it was always fun to ‘accidentally’ step on the foot of a flip flop wearer when on a crowded tube train or platform! ;)

Unfortunately I do know of such an idiot, she thinks it's perfectly fine and lets her teenage daughter wear them. She is a co-worker so unfortunately I can't avoid her, it all came to light when she asked me if mine were real. I would have shrugged it off as just being her (she's not the sharpest tool in the box) had I not come across it again by coincidence whilst watching YouTube.

I happen to dislike specs which is why I never wore them and went straight to contacts, however I take my contacts out when I get home and wear specs but I'd never wear them 'out'...

I agree and is equally stupid as wearing sunglasses in doors or at night. Or the wearing of sunglasses perched on top of the head when the weather is overcast and not particularly bright.

The late comedy writer Eric Sykes wore 'glasses' with plain glass. That was because they were in fact "hearing glasses" - a hearing aid for both ears in the shape of spectacles. This was long before the development of miniature 'in ear' devices.

Guinea pigs do make the sweetest little squeak, I haven't had guineas since I was young. House bunnies take a bit of prep and care but they are so rewarding, there is nothing like taking a Sunday afternoon nap with a pair of bunnies. I'd go in and sleep on the rug in their room and wake up with them asleep by my head, so cute.

In general I dislike tattoos (and body piercing), though I can cope with the odd discrete and well-inked design. The trouble is most of the designs are banal, badly executed as well as being badly placed: on the neck or on the breast where it is half covered by clothing. Those that are covered in tattoos just look, IMO 'dirty', and in the case of women will look ridiculous when they get beyond middle age and the skin starts to loose its elasticity.

I'm amused by those people who have maxims tattooed on their arm in either Latin or Chinese. A woman in the bank who was serving me had one written in Chinese. I asked here what it said, and to my surprise she knew (though it was probably what the tattooist had told her).

When it comes to facial piercings, well it just gives me the creeps: I simply cannot look at someone who has a ring through their nose, lip eyebrow, or 'rivets' around their lips and cheeks. Or those who have holes in their earlobes enlarged with a hollow ring. I find it all quite repellent.

Sadly it's a fashion and I will have to put up with it.

Whenever the 'benefits' of something is rammed down our throats you just know that they are going to benefit more than us. Play hard to get for long enough and you will eventually get it for free. Then you can get your own back by repeatedly 'popping out' each time they are due to visit :)

We've had a smart meter for at least a couple of years, and I can't as I've noticed any reduction in our energy bills.

Puffin
20-06-2019, 17:38
As the energy suppliers only give their best rates (or what are said to be their best rates) for "Brand New Customers Only" we are forced to change supplier every year. When they can supply a Meter that is compatible with all energy suppliers, then I might consider having one.

Barry
20-06-2019, 17:44
You don't need a "smart meter" to reduce you electricity bill. Any savings that might be gained are simply due to you being aware of the amount of electricity you use at any one time. I'm already aware of my consumption, and as I don't have a "smart meter" (and nor do I want one), I will simply the meter reading(s) by phone or via the supplier's on-line site if we are out of the house when the meter reader calls.

I have just have had my monthly payments reduced to the tune of £250 a year. And all without a "smart meter".

Yes, that's it with these smart meters - they don't save energy, they just show you how wasteful you are being. And anyone with half a brain knows you don't need to fill a kettle for one brew. Or leaving the front door open on a windy January day. This is probably why we're not making any savings, we are already pretty savvy with our usage :)

The first thing my father would do every night when he got in from work was turn the heating right down and switch all the lights off. And complain that it was all costing him money. That tends to sink in after a decade or so. I've been to people's houses though where they have the heating full on and all the windows open because it 'gets a bit stuffy' otherwise. I mean that's nuts.

Me too, I can't be doing with tightwads.

My brother had this friend who, when we were out on a pub crawl, would always hang back upon entering the pub so he wouldn't be first at the bar. Or he'd nip to the bogs first. Anything he could do to make sure he got the last round. By the end of the night a considerable saving could be made doing this. Also when it was his round he got himself Fosters, everyone else's rounds and it was Stella. And if he got a takeaway afterwards, he'd eat half and save the other half for his tea tomorrow.

He was an accountant on 45k a year, and in the early nineties that was a fairly good wage.

He probably thought I was a right miserable git, but I couldn't stand to look at him, never mind speak to him :(

I keep to a small group of friends, and that is exactly why. I’ll never forget a friend of a friend who suggested we all go out for pizza and drink a few beers! After the damage was done, he announced he didn’t have any money! And the rest of us were forced to pitch in to cover his part! And he wonders why he’s never invited?

Being generous always pays off, when you’re short others will offer to pay. And my good friend and I used to frequent this same Italian restaurant, and we always tipped the waitresses very well! We would walk in, and the waitresses would be fighting over who was going to wait on us! We got free food and drink all the time, and, thinking back, a few dates too!

For me, such behaviour is more of an illness than a question of attitude. Quite simply, tightfisted people like that have something fundamentally wrong with them. Such outward displays of parsimony are not only very unattractive, but abnormal. It's different if you genuinely don't have much money, and so can't afford certain things, but then you don't put yourself into positions in public where you're unable to pay your way!

So no, I'd never socialise with "tightwads", as I have ZERO respect for them. It isn't cool, and it certainly isn't smart. Oh, and there's a big difference between thrifty/frugal, which I believe Martin's dad was being (in hard times), and outright MEAN....

I don't drive, but my allocated parking spot does get used by family and friends, although to be honest it's unused most of the time. But some entitled plonker has been parked in it since this afternoon, so I've left a note on the windscreen saying it would have been nice if he had the courtesy to buzz and ask if he could park there, I had no visitors planned so I would have happily said yes. I'm probably leaving myself open to a sarcastic door buzz in the middle of the night, but the brass neck of whoever parked there irked me.

I'm with you there Rich. My allocated space is right outside my French doors and usually my car is parked there. I don't go out much so the space is occupied full time. However, the roof of the building is undergoing some repairs and a scaffold had to be put up and I was asked to park my car in a visitors bay while the work was taking place, reasonable enough I thought so did as requested. The scaffold was erected, oo err mrs, and enough space was left to put my car back but thought better of it in case of low flying debris from the roof. Anyway 8.15 the following morning I get a knock on the door from the roofers asking me to move my car and when I looked lo and behold some bell end had parked there overnight. I explained it wasn't my car and had no idea who it belonged to but the roofers insisted I found the owner and got it moved, they were told politely to piss off and talk to the managing agent. I get a call from them wanting to know who's car it was and as I couldn't help them I put the phone down. The car was there all day and mysteriously it was covered in building fallout. Later that evening the owner returned and gave me a load of abuse for letting the roofers work around his car, suffice to say he got a mouthful from me. Interestingly a sign has now appeared saying NO PARKING.

I dont need to be on them (re tax refunds) but the cheeky barstewards said you get it in days if you log on to a site. I looked at it..... F off! So Im waiting for the cheque which takes 60 days after filing a P50 form

Bottom line is I dont want any government agency with my mobile phone number etc etc... I hate em!!

There's no need for them to have your telephone number. Just as if they have the time and manpower to be calling people individually! They just want it so they can break your balls in the future if the need arises.

You can always put a fake number in anyway, that's what I usually do with these online forms where a phone number is compulsory. There's no way for them to verify it.

yeah but I looked through the site registration and they wanted phone verification by text or something.....Plus it started asking a lot of nanny questions already covered on the p50 form

So the P50 form results in a letter awarding a certain amount. They then refer you to a website (for speedy payment) which starts asking the same patronising questions you already sent off on a form.

So you wait ages for the cheque or visit a patronising site that treats you like a baby and gets more info to pin me down. I will wait ages then thanks ( Ive already been waiting 45 days)

If I did go online they will always expect me to go on the site so they can sack more workers and just have one YTS lad working in Dundee. I know for a fact that these ***ts are offering 8 hour a week contracts and our taxes dont get overseen properly

Yes, most banks now require a mobile phone number so they can send you a text with a code in that you use to verify your identity when purchasing stuff online ('two-step verification' is the term). It's a good way of preventing misuse of your card if it's lost or stolen.

I personally can't see the problem giving the number to a government department if it gets the money to you more quickly.

Turns out he's the boyfriend of my upstairs neighbour, I've had a run in with him before and he is wary of me and yes he is an utter nob.
A few years ago a similar situation happened to a friend of mine and after being asked politely on several occasions not to park in my friends bay suitable action was taken. It's surprisingly difficult to clean Vasaline off of a windscreen.
Someone I worked with had his car broken into outside his house, he knew who did it and he exacted a very good revenge. He superglued a plastic bag filled with paint stripper to the thief's car roof, the sweet part is that the thief actually does the real damage when they pull the bag off, brilliant.

 Direct action is wonderful! Thing is, if your friend had reported the theft to the police, pointing them at the culprit, they'd have done jack shit due to 'lack of evidence'. But the complaint would have been recorded, and if your friend than went and give the scrote's car the stripper-in-a-bag treatment, the coppers would be straight round. So your mate could lose twice over :steam: He did exactly the right thing imo.

I’m not sure when it happened, but at some point as I was growing up, Pro Basketball players suddenly started to, “High Five”. I grew up with what is now known as the low five, if someone said, “Give me five”, we held out our hand as waist height. But for some reason I detest a high five! At work years ago, I fixed a major system computer and my boss throwed his arm up signaling me to high five. I gave him the look, and declined. So he made me do it, so I wouldn’t, “leave him hanging”, as it were. Honestly, I do not get this endless need of young folk to high five? Maybe I’m the strange one?

So they are giving them away but they need a £25000 revamp minimum (+++in reality) I know these areas for I have lived in one or two briefly. The kids roam the streets burning out all the empty houses and robbing boilers from the occupied ones. You are more than likely to get your car smashed up every other week. You dont feel safe and I wouldnt buy a mini palace if it was located there.

Where are they getting the revamp money from and do they really think they are getting a bargain? How will they ever sell again? Plus you would never settle with people renovating either side which could take years

What do these people think they are getting? Its an extremely socially deprived area and none of the issues have been sorted or ever will be at this rate

I knew the sort of people it would attract and they are being DUPED in my view. Their intentions are extremely naive in most cases

The biggy is that is absolves the council from doing the REAL WORK of rebuilding the area and promoting values. A few people doing up rickety old terraces is just a red rag to the problem tennants and deep issues of poverty in Britain

They did some similar projects in the Richmond area. These areas were nearly vacant, and while a few were bought by individuals, most were bought up by the block by developers. Now, it’s a high class neighborhood, and street punks can’t afford to live within 10 miles of the place. But they were ultra slums back in the 1980’s and 90’s.

But downtown, the city sunk a large sum into trying to create some upscale shopping, and sunk tax payer money into land the city council owned. It was a huge flop. No one wants to shop where you’re likely to get mugged, anchor stores wouldn’t come, so it wound up a flea market for homeless people to get indoors.

While out on the edge of town, there was a shopping mall that was very successful! Many great stores, and I’m sure it generated a staggering amount of taxes for the city! So, they built a low income housing project right up behind it! A huge increase in crime in the parking lot, and even in the mall. Wound up closing the mall down. They bulldozed it flat.

Don't know why I ever watch Channel 5, it always makes me want to throw something at the telly.

Anyway, last night I saw a programme called "Slum Landlords, Nightmare Tenants". I've seen it before, and it's always the same story: Tenant hasn't paid rent for months, owes thousands, after a long struggle and many threats from tenant, landlords finally get their property back and it's completely trashed. Everything breakable broken, dog shit everywhere and all the rubbish piled up in rooms because they're too idle to use the bin outside.

AFAIK, these tenants (invariably on benefits) get their rent money paid to them, and they choose to piss the money away. Why isn't the money paid directly to the landlords? And why are the identities of these scumbags protected? There should be a database of bad tenants which prospective landlords can consult before handing over their keys.

Surely you can start walking in the right direction though by recalling assault weapons and reduce it to smaller weapons with limited clips for close protection. Far from ideal but a start.

To be open( or concealed) carrying for a trip to the diner is just crazy. If you live by the gun you will die by it. If someone is determined to take something from you they will with a bigger weapon and more surprise. If someone breaks in with an M16 you had better be ready for the mother of all firefights...a pistol aint going to cut it.

The point Im making there is that is a runaway market that leads to people buying ever more crazy weapons

A burglar won't be carrying an M16, he'll want to be able to carry what he steals. Chances are he's stealing 'cos he's broke and maybe a junkie too, so any gun he carries is likely to be a rusty old clunker of a pistol he stole or bought for peanuts, that may or may not work and will probably only have a couple of rounds in, if any.

In that situation, I think my having a nice, loaded, 9mm PPK within reach would be reassuring and certainly provide an edge.

As I said before a loaded gun doesnt set you free.

You can't just recall the 'assault weapons' because the people who own them don't want to give them up and if you try to make them, well, they've got assault weapons and it would all get very messy. Also the history of these massacres shows that you can kill just as many people with handguns. There's no advantage to using an automatic rifle if your targets are just people in a school or a bar or shopping centre.

So you need to recall all the handguns as well. Like I said it is just not possible.

If you're going to have a shoot-out with the cops that's a different matter but that rarely happens. Usually they top themselves when or before any armed response arrives.

If more people were allowed to carry concealed weapons that would be the best available antidote. You're doing a bit of shopping with the mrs in the local mall, a nutter appears and starts shooting, then you can shoot back and solve the problem. But most States make it very difficult or impossible to get a concealed carry permit and otherwise law-abiding people don't want to risk prison if they get caught carrying without a permit. And they don't want to increase concealed carry because the anti-gun lobby see that as a backwards step.

Looking at the logic of the argument roughly 100 people are killed every day in the US by vehicle related incidents and I don't see anyone suggesting we recall all motor vehicles. And don't give me this 'but they're essential!' business. Mankind got along fine without them for several hundred thousand years.

It's a constitutional right because it is right there in the constitution. There's not really any getting away from it. And they already have restrictions on nutters buying weapons, but it doesn't work if the person is not a known nutter when he buys a firearm but then goes nuts later. Which is usually what happens. It's an intractable problem, which is why it just goes on and on. Smarter people than us have tried to come up with solutions and failed. If it was really as simple as change the constitution, confiscate all the weapons (340 million of them) and stop selling any more don't you think that would already have happened?

No-one is disputing that there is a problem but the proposed 'solution', as always, is to 'ban it!'. When history shows that banning things does not work. But on the surface it looks simple and is therefore an attractive proposition. Likewise the idea that all the problems in the world are the result of the few bad people, a handful of rotten apples who have somehow come to have power over the rest of us and if we could just get rid of them everything would be perfect. Again, an attractive proposition as it's simple and at the same time absolves the rest of us of any complicity. It's how it works on television and in Hollywood films, is it really the situation in reality? I don't think so.

Far too generalised and selective view of history ...
Sure some bans appeared to have an adverse effect (such as prohibition) but recent history in the UK contradicts your blanket statement.

The ban on smoking in public buildings contributed to a huge reduction in smoking.
Severely limiting the distribution of single use plastic bags led to a massive reduction in their use.

So yes, some bans might not be effective - but others can work very well indeed if you have a gov that is willing to do the necessary.

Banning something that everyone has, and they feel they have a right to will never work(prohibition was a good example, and US guns are gonna be similar I guess). It worked here because relatively few had them or wanted them(same with smoking)

plastic bags were not banned, larger shops just have to charge 5 pence. In that situation I suspect it is not the five pence itself but that the charge focused people's minds on the environmental issue and they voluntarily started doing something about it.

reduction is smoking is due to many factors, I'd argue the chief one is that they have massively banged up the cost of it. Again, like the bags, it isn't banned. Banning the sale of tobacco has been suggested many times, they have not done it, why is that?

Lots of things are 'banned' but people still do them: theft, murder, prostitution, drugs, speeding, violent behaviour, drunk driving, sexual assault.

Read my post again Martin - I didn't say plastic bags were banned, nor did I claim that the 'public place' ban on smoking was the sole reason for the drastic fall.

In the case of the US the 'banning of guns' you are railing against (disproportionally) is not being proposed by many at all. What is being argued for is limiting the availability of certain types of firearms (such as assault rifles) and regulating their sale more strictly.

It is predictable that the pro-gun lobby wheels out the same old tired arguments about this issue - shame really that they are such a strong lobby when the problem is clearly massive and tragic and the solutions easily to hand.

As for the last line of your post (in bold) - really? - did you really want to put that forward as an argument?

You didn't say the bags were banned, my mistake, although that sort of proves my point that banning is not required in order to change behaviour. I've already addressed the question of assault rifles. If you want to go on a rampage you can kill just as many with a handgun. Added to which in most US states it already illegal to own or sell assault weapons.

And yes, I do wish to put that forward as an argument. The reason most of us do not do those things I've listed (except perhaps speeding) is because we don't want to (for a variety of factors, the legal consequences only being one of them). Conformity to a societal norm and acceptability is the main driver. Once you get a situation where a majority of people are doing it the societal norm shifts and the ban has no effect on behaviour.

In other words if you want people to stop doing something you have to change the way they think, banning it will be ineffective until you have done that. They have to want not to do it. Now if you could change American society to the point where it became socially and morally unacceptable to own firearms then you would have a solution. I have no idea how that would be accomplished though.

The unpredictable nature of avocados, sometimes they are rock hard in the shop even though described as ‘ready to eat’ and never ever get any softer, other times they soften up overnight while you are not looking and have turned to a grey/black mush inside when you come to eat them. Don’t tell me about storing them next to bananas or in a brown paper bag to ripen, there’s NO consistency with the b@st@rds - I do love the odd good one you get with a bit of vinaigrette though!

Fortunately when any avocados I have bought from my local greengrocer haven't ripened, they give me another for free.

Usually I can tell how ripe they are with a very gentle squeeze.

reminds me of that bit in 'Play It Again Sam'

Allan: We're platonic friends. I can't spoil that by coming on. She'll slap my face.

Bogart: Oh, I've had my face slapped plenty of times.

Allan: Yeah, but your glasses don't go flying across the room.

when you send a message to someone and they don't fuckin' reply

When someone sends me a message, but fails to inform me in giant letters 'I HAVE SENT YOU A MESSAGE' I so rarely get pms (Billy-no-mates, me) that I don't routinely check :(

Me neither. I simply don't entertain them, especially on my rarely used, 'gas powered' mobile. It's landline or email, and like it!

But you don't have to buy the avocado a drink first, and pretend to be interested in what it has to say. And you can take it home in the full knowledge that you're gonna get some avocado :)

No worries, and btw, your PM was much appreciated. I should get to it later:)

However, since we're on the subject of non-replies to messages (or even posts on forums)... Folk who wrongly presume that a discussion is over, or there's nothing to say, and who don't answer questions you've asked and you have to badger to respond.

Clue: when you see one of these symbols at the end of a sentence '?', then an answer is required!
