I've been watching some daytime TV this week, mostly shite. One program 'ill gotten gains' shows how profits from crime are recovered and put to good use. First story gets so far and the presenter says"we'll show you later what happened" next story starts, half way through "we'll come back to this with the result of the investigation" next story starts!!! And then they return to the other story's bit by bit :steam: just tell one tale at a time for FS!!!

Yeah keep tuned so you will see the adverts and have to watch to the bitter end. Its getting like the American TV when they have so many ad breaks that they reintroduce you to the programme with a minute or so of whats been happening...loses all flow and constantly repeating itself...soooo annoying and hardly worth watching anyway. Well it is American TV as so much of it is now on UK channels

Anyway UK daytime tv is a national disgrace. Its like they think anyone with a brain is out at work so lets fill the airtime with mind numbing lowest common denominator rubbish.

"Television drug of the nation, breeding ignorance and feeding radiation"

I hardly watch any tv now and there is only some stuff on BBC4 HD in the evening thats worth bothering with. A channel that has the sense to shut down until the evenings viewing

The demand for cocaine and cannabis wasn't there like it is now though. It's a black market in the tens of billions now. The tax revenue from legalising it would make North Sea oil look like a ten shilling postal order. We could be like Brunei.

But the same attitude to policing prevailed in the past, which was all about knowing who the wrong 'uns were and keeping a lid on them. No-one ever thought that one day they would have locked up all the scrotes and crime would stop. I've never met a copper who thought there was a solution to it all that would make him redundant. And you'd think they would know if there was one.

Did you know that the UK is the largest exporter of ‘legal’ cannabis in the world?

Also, we just don’t get cocaine in the UK anymore, it’s a blend of pharmaceuticals, fillers, stuff like fentanyl, and Jah knows what else. Same thing with all Class A drugs in the UK really, a total crapshoot on what you are going to get.

Yes I spotted that too. Haven't heard it for about 25 years. It's scary how quick the years pass.

TV adverts have become little more than a minor inconvenience for most people thanks to Sky+ (other recording devices are available) and catch up TV. I don't know why the advertisers bother anymore.

I've noticed that a couple of soaps begin with a small letter "p" in the corner of the screen. Nobody told me, but I reckon it means "product placement". I've seen McCain frozen chips appear on Emmerdale recently (easy to distinguish from the characters by having "McCain" printed clearly on them). Also on Coronation Street, lots of people walking round with Costa coffee cups. Why anyone would walk 20 yards from their front door to pay the thick end of three quid when they have a working kettle at home I don't know.

Of course these are Mrs. P's theories - I never bother with these programmes you know.

That's rather like my thoughts on barbeques. I mean why? You're twenty feet from a fully functioning and much more convenient to use indoor kitchen where you can cook everything properly and take it into the garden if need be.

Of course everybody will disagree with me. But I don't care!

I do like barbecues, but I'm also very lazy, so I just go to other folk's barbecues. I do like barbecued meat, I could eat it till I'm sick.

If ever we camped, or went to bike rallies, we'd often have one. If you're having to cook outside anyway, you might as well.

I remember on one camping trip at a site near Pooley Bridge, we got back from the pub, and decided that a midnight barby while pissed would be a great idea.
Unfortunately the disposable grill we'd bought earlier came with flame-retardant charcoal. My mate reckoned things could be moved along a bit by pouring on some petrol freshly siphoned from his Harley.

I don't think any of us were ready for the speed at which the fire travelled up the petrol stream to the plastic bottle he was holding, and when he jumped back in surprise, he fell backwards into the ditch. By now his hand, the bottle and the water he was sat in were all on fire.

What happened next (or rather what didn't happen) earned us the silent treatment from his missus for the rest of the night. Instead of rushing to his aid, we quickly fumbled out our phones to record the fun. My mate's hand was fine. The real tragedy was that none of the video footage was any good :(

The British never had conscription until WW1, always an all-volunteer army. That was the difference. Although sometimes if you'd ben nicked for something it was either volunteer or go to prison. The Yanks still do that I think.

I’m afraid not. The “Yanks”, now days want college graduates to join the army, or promise a college education as soon as you join. No more riff raff in the ranks, any misconduct will get you a dishonorable discharge. Because their numbers are small, they can be choosy. But I fear if a world war broke out, many of our young are too soft and coddled to be of any use.

Indeed. The poet Robert Browning used the word 'twat' in a poem because he mistakenly thought it meant a sort of hat worn by nuns. This being Victorian times, however, everyone was far too polite/embarrassed to point out the mistake, so there the word is, in his poem 'Pippa Passes'.

This isn't Sunday school but it isn't a warehouse or a barracks either. So the line is somewhere in between. It's a grey area based on the individual situation and adjudicated with common sense. Man on the Clapham Omnibus. That sort of thing.

Interesting! I didn't know that. I heard one person say "doesn't it mean a pregnant goldfish"? Ugh!

David Cameron of course, famously, used the word and was rightly condemned and forced to make an abject apology.

I just don't see the need for such obscene words ("intensifiers") in a public forum which may be read by one's daughters, nieces, wives or mothers.(Men are often equally offended.)

Thanks,

Hi Richard,

As Macca says, we've no specific rules here on language, although of course if someone is seemingly incapable of communicating without the use of profanity, then that would be dealt with and prevented.

In this instance, as it was an isolated incident, all I can do is ask Jamie to bear in mind that some folks may be offended by the word in question, and to consider that fact in future. He's a friendly and considerate chap, whom I'm sure wouldn't wish to deliberately upset anyone:)

Interesting! I didn't know that.

Here's chapter (and verse!) from yer Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pippa_Passes#"A_distressing_blunder"

"A distressing blunder"

Besides the oft-quoted line "God's in his Heaven/All's right with the world!" above, the poem contains an error rooted in Robert Browning's unfamiliarity with vulgar slang. Right at the end of the poem, in her closing song, Pippa calls out the following:

But at night, brother Howlet, far over the woods,
Toll the world to thy chantry;
Sing to the bats’ sleek sisterhoods
Full complines with gallantry:
Then, owls and bats, cowls and twats,
Monks and nuns, in a cloister’s moods,
Adjourn to the oak-stump pantry!

"Twat" both then and now is vulgar slang for a woman's external genitals. It has become a relatively mild epithet in parts of the UK, but vulgar elsewhere. When the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary enquired decades later where Browning had picked up the word, he directed them to a rhyme from 1660 that went thus: "They talk't of his having a Cardinall's Hat/They'd send him as soon an Old Nun's Twat."[2] Browning apparently missed the vulgar joke and took "twat" to mean part of a nun's habit, pairing it in his poem with a priest's cowl.[3][4] The mistake was pointed out by H. W. Fay in 1888.[5]'

There IS a line. As I think a famous US judge once said: "Free Speech does NOT give one the right to shout 'FIRE'!!! in a crowded cinema".

So libel/slander is OK on this forum then and the administrators have taken out insurance on the possibility/probability of being sued? I for one need to know.

It's always been my view that reasonable adults can interact together perfectly fine without any clearly designated set of rules.

Reasonable meaning that there has to be a bit of give and take within vague boundaries. So those who are offended by coarse language should accept that some of us will use it occasionally for comic effect or to make a point. And those of us who occasionally use it must accept that it has to be used within reason and with a purpose, rather than gratuitously.

Boundaries must be vague because the last thing a reasonable adult wants is to be treated like a child and be shown the boundaries as though he didn't already know where they are.

There was suggestion recently amongs ornithologists that the birds commonly known as: tits, cocks, chuffs and shags, ought to be given less risqué names. Fortunately this rather pathetic attempt at Bowdlerisation never took off.

My view is that if a poster resorts to language that may be perceived as offensive by others, then that is reflection on the poster and his lack of eloquence. It will not be censored or removed by Admin, unless of course such language is used as an insult towards another Member. And in that repect, such language is in no way 'softened' by dyslexia or through the substitution of letters by other characters.

Understood Barry, and, to a very great degree, I agree, ...some 'latitude' is needed. I'm not after a draconian rule book, just some common-sense attitudes to others' sensibilities and treating everyone with respect and politeness. I can't see what's wrong with that. Actually, the C-word is a culturally-rich word (and has no strict biological definition/equivalent). I'm sure that in the bedroom it is a very empowering word and of course, up to mid-Victorian times was more acceptable and very often used in street names to denote the place of brothels etc. (People in Scunthorpe don't seem to mind ...apologies to the inhabitants).

I'm sure that in the bedroom it is a very empowering word and of course, up to mid-Victorian times was more acceptable and very often used in street names to denote the place of brothels etc. (People in Scunthorpe don't seem to mind ...apologies to the inhabitants).

Yes I'm told that the centre of Scunthorpe is a nice place to live.

Animals are funny things. I'll be watching the telly and the dog begs to go outside, then lays down on the lawn. The moment I go and sit down again, he's scratching at the door to come in. Quarter of an hour later he wants out again. He's quite happy to keep this up all day!

Cats are supposed to be intellegent creatures and don't like to get wet. We had one once who, when she felt the call of nature, would ask to be let out. Usually this would be via the back door, but if it was raining outside she would decline and walk to front door - expecting the weather there to be better!

Mine must have understood that the two were connected because he would go out the front way and come in the back way. But then he would also happily sit outside in the pouring rain. Funny things, no two are exactly alike.

I'd say some humans aren't much smarter.

I remember once we were going to ride from Bedford to Newquay on a camping trip, and checked the forecast on TV first. It said a band of heavy rain was moving eastwards from the West Country. Deterred? Not at all! We tried the other channels to try and find a better forecast.

All the forecasts were the same. and all correct. That was a shit run.

We've had Alice (the cat) for just over a year now, and last night she settled on my lap and went to sleep. Not remarkable at all really, but until now she would always leap over me rather than walk over me to get by, and howls if you try to pick her up. I think her last owners may have treated her badly, trust can be a hard thing to regain.

It's these little bits of affection that almost make up for all the turds she keeps burying in the flower beds.

What really gets on my threepenny bits is lack of communication and nothing else gets me wound up more.

FFS we have mobile phones with voicemail, landline phones with answering machines, text messages, emails and even soshal mejia, all of which costs little or nothing to use. We no longer have to write letters by hand, put it in an envelope, buy a stamp and go to the pillar box to post the feckin thing and wait days for a reply.

Applying for jobs is a complete joke now and the red mist descends when I read this sort of crap; "Due to the large volume of responses, if you haven't heard back in 30 days then assume your application was unsuccessful". Large volume? Sites like Reed show the total number of applicants, so when I see only 5 people have applied, I really want to hit the asshole that wrote those patronising words. Even if they sent me an email saying "Piss off" that at least would be some form of communication.

Now you can compose an email with just one set of typing to be done, copied to as many blind recipients as you could possibly want, which took around 20 seconds at most to write and cost sweet fanny adams to send, so what excuse do these shit-for-brains need? NOBODY is that busy, so I don't buy that excuse either.

Many years ago, I worked with a senior bloke from Marks and Spencer, part of whose job was selecting new employees for their management team. This was just before the internet really took off, so most job applications were paper-based. He said that, as the company received so many applications, they had a rule-of-thumb method of reducing the number to read:

Anything sent second-class post was rejected unopened

Anything send in a brown envelope was rejected unopened.

After that, if there were still too many to read, an arbitary 50% would be rejected without being opened (on the basis that such a random rejection method wouldn't risk an action for discrimination), until the total was down to a manageable number.

They also operated an 'If you do not hear from us ...' policy.

I wondered about this until I started recruiting staff myself for an organisation that insisted that all applicants be contacted and informed of the outcome of their applications. One time I was on the phone for over an hour to a bloke who insisted that he should have got the job, and who became quite abusive when I told him I couldn't give details of other candidates, but that the successful candidate had given the best interview.

I think people are suffering from an overload of communication. I’ve sent emails to Krell, VPI, Magnum Dynalab, a few guitar companies, and the worst was Ultimate microphone and guitar stand company. No response from any of them! I am always quite polite, and include all information in my emails, and it does piss me off when they fail to replay. The Ultimate guitar stand, came with a tag that promised lifetime warranty! With an 800 number, I called the number every day for two weeks and left polite messages, no one ever returned my call. I even stated I was willing to buy the part needed, still no response. I wondered if the boss knew this person was not answering calls?

When I worked in a corporate office, I knew my direct superiors were lying to the big guy upstairs. So I took it upon myself to go directly to the big man and tell him what was going on, concerning something that has been going on for a while. Come to find out he didn’t care, he only wanted to hear from his direct subordinates, if they lied about what went on below them, it made no difference to him. He had worked himself into a position he didn’t have to talk to the little people, and that was that! That was when I realized I was too honest to work in a corporate environment.

Yeah the internet does not really make it any easier. Its still about who you know. Theres not really any communication for rejected applicants as they dont run a feedback service and nor would they ever want to

This is mainly because they would have to explain their own ramshackle hiring process and prejudices

Its all about hard skills and its just a BS process. Even when writing if they really want you they wouldnt care if the thing arrived on Snoopy notepaper as long as the skills really stand out.

The internet is full of BS job sites. The way its going is more of a Linkedin Facebook example where you do them a little song and dance video or let them in to your holiday snaps to see if they like you.

General skills just dont cut it anymore unless you have something to blackmail them with :)

I have no qualms at all if someone better has landed the job, but the few times I have met the successful candidate I really could weep at how inept and incompetent they actually are. They do love their dreamies!

We bought this plastic mouse, shaped like a weeble that you put dreamies inside. The cat taps it around with her paw, and they drop out of holes.

8.30pm is 'dreamies' time, and around that time she goes and sits next to the mouse. She's never more than a few minutes out.

Why dont you pet owners have a room where pets are not allowed? :) There seems no point owning anything that you want to keep looking nice. Can you imagine buying big Tannoys, a new Sondek or a 4K TV and having a room full of puppies or cats.

I cant fathom that but pet owners dont seem to care.

Its not just that...it the pot luck situation where you dont know if the cat is suddenly going to treat the speakers or the TV as a scratching board or chewing toy The dog/cat doesnt really care and dont tell me you have them trained to respect a fine veneer :)

Are you not familiar with the concept of “training?!

We have two cats that we have had since kittens and they have never scratched any of my loudspeakers or climbed on the hi-fi. Why? Simply because, as kittens if they tried something naughty they got a firm “NO” and a blast of water in the face from a water pistol!

Completely non-harmful but it made an impression and, now, the word no is all that is required, and the only things they scratch are their scratching posts.

As an aside, on the one and only occasion when my speakers did look like a target and I deployed the above method, apparently my “NO” was a little more than firm. Mrs. B says she heard it clearly from the bottom of the garden!

Minstrel SE

No I dont really buy that training solves the issue. They have the brains, reactions and skittishness of small animals. Youve had to go through real effort since young and I still think it doesnt really sink in. You think youve done well and then they leave you a present in a more secluded cupboard

You can probably get to a certain point but I think the pet will mostly still do what it wants. If it sees something out of the window and the hi fi is a better vantage point , you can kiss goodbye to your perspex cover being unmarked.

I think training only goes so far with animals. The idea of training a pet not to wreck my stuff doesnt really appeal. Its hard enough with Human family members :)

Why do we go out in our smart clothes when there's a chance that some idiot may spill his beer on them, or a bird may drop a shit on them? Why would we be daft enough to pay good money for a nice car only to risk getting it pranged by some knobhead, or have the expensive paintwork chipped away by flying bits of gravel? You make choices and live with the consequences.

If anything was damaged I would take the financial hit come selling time, either by making good the damage or selling at a reduced price to whoever would buy something less than mint. My house is a home for my family and pet(s), not just a shrine to things hifi.

I've had a few cats and two large dogs (bullmastiffs), and none have ever done any damage to any of my stuff.

The only hifi damage I've ever suffered was to my B&W 603's tweeters by my young grandson's prying fingers. There aren't many 603's that haven't suffered this fate. And when he grows up and gets a job I'll be presenting him with a bill.

My cat had a day of going at the arm of my sofa, but not any more. She's got used to the smell of her new post, so we're all good again.

Macca
28-05-2018, 16:36
My cat never damaged the hi fi. Sometimes he would sit on top of the pre-amp, I think because he knew it bothered me. It was valve and I was worried about his fluff going down the vents.

He never crapped in the house either. With a cat that means psychological issues, it isn't happy in other words.

Dogs are pretty easy to train if you are strict and you start on them young.

Not sure how much of this is true, but when I was a baby the cat climbed into my pram and went to sleep on my head (luckily I suffered no ill-effects), and my dad's training method proved very effective. He drop-kicked it over the yard wall, and it never came back. Apparently it was already on a yellow card over some other stuff.

It has to be accepted that having pets could lead to damaged property and I do concede that allowing my cat to lay on my hifi is a risk but I have taken precautions such as using an old lid and not leaving potential ' toys ' for her to get any ideas about.
That being said the company and affection I get from her is very welcome as being pretty much housebound these days I don't get to see too many people. She doesn't rule the home but I give her as comfortable a life as I can and yes I do let her do things she really shouldn't.
One last thing I do take some offence at the suggestion owning a pet equals living in a shithole and not caring about it. My home isn't some sterile, charcterless shrine to good taste but I like it and so does the cat

Well said Ian, I agree 100%.

By the way, your 'shithole' looks very nice (ooh, that sounded a bit pervy), and the weeble mouse on the floor adds a nice homely touch.

I can see where you're coming from Martin, we would all like the things we invest so much time and money in to stay pristine, but for most of us our pets' happiness and well-being trumps even that. Almost all of us I would say can report no problems, although there will be the odd exception. I think Im getting a battering here from pet owners. :) Im not suggesting that anybody lives in a shithole and Im just interested where pets fit in to buying and keeping things nice.

I understand a pet gives a lot of pleasure and material things are just stuff. Maybe I am OCD about stuff. (I am) but i just find it interesting and distressing at the same time to see a cat on top of the turntable cover. Last time I looked they werent rated for the weight of a fully grown cat.

I have just bought two perspex covers and I know the cost and how they need to be treated

You can see it from my point of view that if you shell out for a nice turntable and the cat uses it as a bed..whats the point in keeping anything cosmetically nice so that would be quite a trade off for me.

Yes things get damaged and maybe its about being more laid back about it. Its a question of priorities and if your pet comes first thats fine. Im not going to totally back down though because my priority is not letting cats or dogs sit on top of my equipment.

Yes I managed to damage my own speakers and I was gutted. That why I took a renewed interest in how others treat their equipment and deal with damage...some of you dont care do you :D Only joking

Martin, I take on board what you are saying and applaud anyone for wanting to own and keep nice things, high standards are to be admired. I wouldn't dream of letting my cat anywhere near my hifi, turntable especially if there was a danger of her breaking it. She weighs just under five and a half pounds ( recent vet trip ) and that particular lid survived the journey here from Bristol with Parcelforce so it's a pretty rugged thing. In a bid to put your mind at ease I have now place a spare glass shelf from my Target rack on top of the lid for extra rigidity, and they can handle the nineteen kilos my amp weighs lol.

I've got an old tt laying around so perhaps I should teach her to use that as her bed instead lol.

Mrs. Pony is a bigger threat to the finish of my stuff with her damn polishing cloth. I dust it all myself these days.

Last Christmas she squeezed the tree alongside one of the speakers. When she'd taken it down I found two very fine scratches on the side of the speaker. After she regained consciousness and had the tree surgically removed, she promised never to put the tree there again, and have the scratches made good.

Scratches have not been sorted yet. Any advice? they're very fine, not deep and about 3" long.

The cat won't damage a turntable lid by sleeping on it. I can attest to that with multiple combinations of cats and lids.

It might leave a bit of mud or fluff but you can wipe that off.

I don't agree with trashing kit for the sake of it but I'm not keen on the idea of wanting everything I own to always look like it just came out of the box. Like these de-cluttered homes, it just seems like a very 'antiseptic' way to approach life. Something gets a knock or a ding then its a pity but ultimately it's just a thing whereas the cat is your friend and ally.

I'm not really sure why, but it annoys the shit out of me when I get a response to an ad that I've placed on gumtree that asks what the lowest I'll take for the item is. I can't help but send an obnoxious reply, the price I want is clearly marked on the ad, if they make an offer I'm happy to politely reply with a yes or no, but that just gets on my nerves.

I know what you mean, if someone makes a fair offer that's fine but otherwise they can forget it. I sold a decent car a few years ago and got the " what's your lowest price " chat, I told them to make me a reasonable offer but when half the asking price was offered they seemed shock when I turned it down and it was strangely satisfying to just walk away from them. Later they made a more realistic offer but just to be bloody minded I told them it was sold. It went a couple of days later for the asking price.

Car Share! I must admit I have only watched about 10 minutes of it but that was because I was rapidly losing the will to live so had to make a dash for my medication. I believe the working title was Two People in a Car with Bvgger All of Interest to Say and Certainly Nothing Funny. That bloke has made me laugh on occasion with his night club series but seems now to believe that merely putting his fat face on the screen is enough to send people into convulsions - well it did me Peter, but not in a good way I'm afraid. I'm glad you mentioned this because I have been thinking just how much I have gone off Peter Kay. I watched a bit of the unscripted car share show and just realised how painfully bad it is...and I mean painful

Its just awful and too near the bone because Ive been in work and car share situations where nothing of interest or quality is being said. The local radio station coupled the banal, ignorant chat is just a nightmare to me. People with nothing to say until radio nicey prompts them with some meaningless drivel......Aaaargh. Im sorry but its just pandering to and a celebration of low standards. More importantly it isnt funny. If you are working with someone and dont really know them its just a mixture of small talk and being too scared to really open up due to work politics.....awful :)

I had the Phoenix Nights boxset at one point when I was just buying anything. I couldnt watch it now and he doesnt do it for me as a stand up comedian.

I had a phase with him but now wonder whether he ever had any real talent. Car share is truly awful!

Not sure if this has been touched on before but its pedestrians who cross the road on a red light. For example I was on my bike waiting at the lights the other day
( yes some of us do ) with some other vehicles and just as our light turns green 2 soppy teenagers decide to cross. Well a quick bellow from me stopped all that
and to fair one of the girls did apologies, which was nice. Of course everyone does it sometimes I understand that but there so much of it going on in London
and elsewhere I guess, and its just so unfair to drivers etc. And another thing is if 2 friends cross on a red and they get blasted by drivers hooter they go into fits of
laughter as if its funny !, ITS NOT. Oh well even if no one picks the baton up on this subject I certainly feel better for going on me little rant. Good thread invention
this by Geoff or whoever started it. Take care everyone, especially at traffic lights !

I think 'Phoenix Nights' was really good at the time, with much of the humour of a sort not seen elsewhere. 'Car Share' is the same old gags, done in a variety of new locations.

I find Peter Kay a bit too 'safe' for my tastes these days. I prefer someone a bit more 'edgy', like Jim Jeffries. Someone who can make you laugh at tricky, often taboo subjects, then challenge you on it. Comedy that messes with your head a bit!

Macca

Phoenix Nights was proper telly. But that had other characters and actors that were also good. Car Share is effectively just him and it's a bit thin as a result.

A few years ago I was driving home in my van, and as I was passing trough a crossroads with traffic lights, three people (two young men and a young woman) crossed the road in front of me. I had slowed to about twenty, and the woman and first man crossed the road with no problems.

The second man was another matter. I don't know if he'd just been ejected from the pub across the road, but he was swaggering with a real attitude, with arms-akimbo, like he was carrying two invisible rolls of lino. He deliberately slowed his walk, looking at me challengingly as he did so.

I had slowed quite a lot more, but he was still struck by a ten mph wing mirror. I saw his reaction by looking in my remaining good mirror. I thought people only shook their fist in comics.

I felt guilty and pleased with myself in equal measures. :)

The old rules of barter still apply. The seller wants as much as they can get for the item, the buyer wants to pay the least. Reverse the roles so the seller becomes the buyer and vice versa, their stances change over instantly and the same bartering rules still apply.

I don't mind knocking off a few quid for a speedier sale, but what really makes my blood boil is when these numpties offer ludicrously low amounts thinking you are either very desperate or plain stupid :steam: I usually reply by saying if it was their item would they accept such an absurd amount?

I’ve written in a sales ad, “Low ball offers will receive hardy laughter!”. To heck with ignoring it.

Back to the pet topic:
I once had a cat that when I was blasting rock music full tilt she would set in front of the speaker, with ears pinned back, and lean in until her whiskers touched the woofer cone. Strange cat.

I’ve had many pets over the years and never gave any thought to them hurting my stereo. And they never did. I had a drunken girlfriend break my record player once, and I sprayed her in the fac...,well we won’t go there! But once I did find a mouse hole in my woofer cone, field mouse living in my speaker? Can you imagine? He must have been deaf, or a real rock fan!

I don't mind Car Share, actually. It's just a bit different from what he's done before. I think a lot of the problem with Kay, or anyone else, is that people generally don't like change, and they'll always judge you on the shows you originally started with, which as such will act as the benchmark. In that respect, it's a bit like the dreaded 'second album', for a musician, after a huge success with the first one.

Unfortunately however, in this instance with comedy, folk want you to stay the same and do the same stuff that made them laugh the first time, and unfortunately that's not how it works, or it would get very boring. Plus, actors or comedians like to push the boundaries and challenge themselves doing new things. The worst thing you can do is stagnate and only be known and recognised for performing one specific role.

In that respect, I don't think that Peter Kay has set out to change or be less funny than he once was, just because he's wealthier now [I don't buy that]; it's simply that the new material/scripts he's currently working with might not succeed in showcasing his funny side as well as his previous shows did, or that they just doesn't appeal to you the same.

That's more likely the reality:)

Marco.

The same thing (or similar) yes, in terms of humour, but in a different format, and that can hugely influence the appeal of a show or not. I understand what you're saying, but totally disagree that it's got anything to do with him being less funny now because he's wealthier.

Peter Kay is a fat, working-class Northerner. He can't really re-invent himself, any more than Jimmy Carr can re-invent himself as anything other than a slim, rich Southerner, or Ricky Gervaise can be anything other than a short-arsed annoying get. Essentially they play themselves, unlike other comic actors who have a wider range, and can be believable as different 'types'. I guess Peter Sellers is the most obvious example for us older blokes.

Humour is of course entirely subjective; either it makes you smile or laugh, or it doesn't. I thought that, for the most part, Car Share was very funny, although the unscripted episode was shite, and the finale was just OK. It'll be interesting to see what Peter Kay does next. Was John Cleese ever funny after Fawlty Towers?

The speed at which the presenters talk on the Today programme. I appreciate they have a lot of news items to get through but listening on a little bedroom or kitchen radio, as I'm sure a lot of people do, I find I am missing not just the odd word but whole phrases sometimes. Thinking about Brian Redhead, the standard of BBC presenters really has plummeted in the last decade. I sometimes think that they have deliberately picked the worst possible people for the job.

Like that scruffy get who presents Newsnight. You're on the telly mate, don't you think it might have been a good idea to have a shave, maybe put a tie on? Must be on £500K a year and it looks like he mugged a tramp and nicked his clothes.

Tony Blair was to blame. Some people looked at him and thought 'Hey the Prime Minister reckons he doesn't need to wear a tie so that means I can stop doing it too.'

And the rest of us thought 'Scruffy bastard. If I've got to wear a tie to work then the Prime Minister should certainly have to.' It should actually be in the rules. And no beards or tashses either (unless you ex navy or army). A full beard looks wrong on all but 1 in a 1000 men so it probably doesn't suit you. Jeremy Corbyn for example, just looks like he can't be arsed to shave. Which is probably the truth of it.

No. We hit Tesco and Sainsbury's first. Blockade the car parks by 10am. That's half the population trapped in their cars and immobilised. Oh, and put a chair up against the front door of the police station so they can't get out and annoy us.

If you think you can keep the police in by putting a chair against the door, you obviously never watched "The Big Lebowski".

I'm always amazed how many people listen to Radio 4. It's either boring or unsettling.

Not in my opinion: I enjoy listening to the arts review programmes, history and current affairs discussion, and of course The Archers on Radio 4. (And as Marco has mentioned, some of the afternoon plays can be very good.)

For political discussion listen to LBC; now that, depending on the leaning of the presenters and of some of the ill-informed contributors, does make me shout at the radio!

For classical (and some jazz), as well as for "world"/electronic/avant-garde music in 'Late Junction', there is Radio 3 (and for the Proms of course).

I couldn't agree more, the seller wants us to buy it without bothering to tell us what's on the album or with us having to do his job for him.

Also, I buy a lot of vinyl from ebay and I'm just starting to get fed up with sellers thinking all vinyl is 'mint' and priceless, it seems to have become more frequent in the last month or two.

Most sellers go by visual inspection I think and there's a great difference between looking good and playing good. I clean all my records on a Moth RCM and they look blemish free but can still have quite a bit of snap, crackle and pop in them. On the other hand I have some jazz pressings getting on for 80 years old that sound crisp and crystal clear. They took more care in the old days when sound was King!

You know I'm getting tired of this kid-centric world we live in. Why is it ok for kids to run round screaming in the pub when you just want a quiet pint, but not ok for me to have some fun in the wacky warehouse?

Honestly they have it all their own way don't they.

I think a lot of people my age are labelled "grumpy old men" because we are, and with good reason. When we were growing up adults were in charge. Now we're grown up it's the kids who are in charge. There was never a time when we were "boss". :(

Still I had the last laugh. I did a shit in the ball pit. :D

I don't know exactly when it happened but at some point in the last 30 years it went from 'Children should be seen and not heard' to 'You must indulge your child in its every whim otherwise you are a bad parent,'

Next thing you know you've got a 'Lord Of The Flies' situation on your hands.

The differences between adults and children are mainly that children are told what to do by adults and adults have been around long enough to hopefully accumulate some experience and judgement, although many seem to have failed in that. Lets face it, most idiotic things are done by grown-ups, not kids. So, yep, put the kids in charge I say! It can't be any worse (or can it? :D)

I'll give you an example, my nephew is building a lego model and he's missing a piece. Can't have gone far. So he announces it and immediately his parents have dropped everything and are on their hands and knees searching for it, my 78 year old mother, too, whilst he just stands there.

I told them all that they were out of their tiny minds.

What really gets me is that when I was his age, if I'd gone to my mother and said 'I've lost a bit of lego' her response would have been 'Well you'd best get looking for it then.'

That's what I mean - adults get the kids they deserve by and large. Admittedly there will be some kids difficult by nature but on the whole adults are to blame. Bringing up your children properly is the most important job anyone can have.

Macca
17-06-2018, 08:54
It's bad for the children too. What are they going to grow up like? When you are grown up and out on your own you have to find your own missing lego. Kids these days seem incapable of making their own entertainment - all their toys seem designed to keep them indoors. The only way to get them out of the house is to fork out for after school clubs, for football, swimming or whatever. And the adults often have some involvement, including picking up and dropping off, and it's not enough for the little tykes to do this stuff, the parents have to stay and watch.

We always did our own thing as kids. Building dams, fishing, nicking apples, building rope swings, climbing trees, in fact climbing anything that had a bit of height to it. Digging holes and tunnels for no other reason but to see how deep we could go. Bad one that, my eleven year old friend died when one of these tunnels collapsed.

And we had an arsenal of weapons that would horrify most parents today. GAT pistols, Milbro catapults, throwing arrows, arrows which had knife blades tied to the ends and shot from catapults, Cack-sticks (blob of wet clay stuck on the end of a bamboo cane, which could be slingshot for miles, not very accurate but hurt like buggery if one hit you). And netting staples fired from elastic bands. Got one of them in the back of my head once-made my eyes water a bit.

And fires. lots of fires. I once set fire to an entire hillside and the Fire Brigade had to come and put it out. I got a right pasting for that one.

All this stuff looks a bit feral and probably was, but I think I turned out quite normal. :)

Of course these things were largely possible because where we lived was semi-rural. I feel sorry for kids growing up in towns and cities, I don't know what the answer is there.

Spare the rod and spoil the child. The government got in between the children and their parents, you can’t discipline a child without fear that Social Services won’t be knocking on your door! Children cannot be reasoned with, they do not possess the self control to do as they should, or make sound decisions, and fear of a good ass whipping is the only thing that can make them think twice. They turned out some decent human beings in our day, but now a young man doesn’t get his way and goes into a crying tantrum? Is there any mystery how he got this way?

I agree the world has changed and it is all the more of a shock because it stayed the same for such a long time. I recall the Silver Jubilee in '78, we had a party in the church hall, boys in their school shorts and blazers and girls in their Holy Communion dresses. A photo was taken. On the wall was a picture taken of the party held in the same church hall for Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

The girls and boys in the picture were dressed identically to us, the interior of the church hall, as much as could be made out from the photo, had not changed in any detail. Indeed very little had changed outside, the same shops and houses looking identical. About the only noticeable difference would be all the cars on the street.

But from about 1980 the world started to change radically, until here we are in 2018 living in 'The Future'. And it sucks pretty badly compared to the world that had existed almost in stasis for the previous hundred years.

Well yes, we all have to live with things as they are - and I guess you are right in that we helped create the world we live in simply by being there while it happened, but a lot of 'decent' folk will feel they were just behaving themselves most of the time. In general I think posters are looking to explain things rather than blame anything or anyone... That's how I see it anyway.

Anyway my point is you could take someone in a time machine from 1920 to 1977 (ahem) and aside from the proliferation of motor vehicles not a lot would have changed in their neighbourhood or the way people lived their lives. Telly excepted, but you had a cinema on very street back in the 1920s so that wouldn't be too much of a shock.

The schools, shops, hospitals, police station and church would all be the same buildings in the same places, possibly manned by the children or grandchildren of the people who manned them in his time.

Whereas now the schools, cop station, hospital and church would all be gone and replaced by blocks of flats and a supermarket, the shops would be houses, and so forth.

The world underwent a drastic change around the turn of the century, the previous one. Before 1900, if you kissed a girl you intended to marry her, horses were the main mode of transportation and chances are you did the same job your father did. Then came factory jobs, automobiles, and airplanes, a world war! Mechanized warfare, people changed suddenly. Flappers and gangsters, movies! All these things had a major affect on life. I’m sure the old folks who died in the 1930’s were simply shocked at how the world had gone to the crapper.

Speed ahead to the 1980’s. The IBM 8080 computer, Apple, making home computers, I wondered what would anyone even want one for? Cable TV! Suddenly programmers weren’t saddled with the censors of the three big networks, and I went to school and learned computers, and at work I saw the Internet come to life. And at first you had to be an expert to get on it. Then, Web Browsers and search engines opened it up for the masses! And what was the first thing to happen? Porno! Yep, the Internet was flooded with porno! Could you look up useful information? No, but there was free porn everywhere you looked! A friend of mine always refers to his computer as, “The Evil Box”, and I think he’s right. Other than AOS of course, computers have been the downfall of civilization. All of a sudden it’s Ok to be a weirdo, surely you can find others just as weird online? It has become too easy to be immoral, and hide behind your avatar. And it has become very easy to bash anything you like without fear of getting your mouth mashed in. I have seen a direct correlation between the proliferation of technology and the downfall of morality. Plus a few other factors that I won’t get into right here, but it makes me wonder if we were better off before the internet?

Some very good points Russell.

I once heard someone say that if all the porn was removed from the internet there would be only one website. And it would be called "Bring back the Porn".

The internet has enabled us to do a lot of things we couldn't do before. It's also enabled us to do things we really shouldn't be doing. Anonymity gives the not-rights freedom to be as obnoxious/depraved as they like, but addressing this would also impinge on our civil liberties. What to, what to do, what to do....

Spot on, Russell (your whole post), but in particular the bit above. I've often said that one of the worst things about the Internet was giving a 'voice' to all the loons/social misfits/dregs of society, who previously had rightfully been gagged!

Now they've become 'trolls', turning anyone who doesn't 'fit' with their world, and shows up their upbringing-induced inadequacies/insecurities, into a target of their ire. However, in terms of the bit in bold, certain chickens will soon be coming home to roost;)

While I’m on a roll, the other thing that has had severe unforeseen consequences on society was birth control. Invented and released to the public in the 1960’s, it freed all women from the shackles of child rearing. Free to pursue their passions and careers. Seemed like such a great thing! Inspired the generation of, “Free Love”, in the 60’s. But by the 1980’s new and killer STD’s were not only in the fringes of society, but anyone from any walk of life may contract some rather terrible illnesses. And the long term effect is that smart people have used birth control, while stupid people have not! And in a few short generations the stupid people outnumber the smart people by a significant margin! Before birth control, smart people and dump people procreated at the same pace, but now while smart people have confined themselves to one or two children, some even no children, the dregs of society have continued to proliferate at the old rates! And sadly, we have engineered the weapon of our own demise. Now, the smart people are mixing with the dumb people, so now the few smart offspring are diluted, and the ratio keeps slipping off the shallow end of the gene pool. Combine these less than smart people with the social pollution of my last post, and you see the problem is compounding.
