Americans yes. 'Couple something' used without 'of'. Grrrr..
Having said that we have a few of our own, some of them based on Amercianisms: 'Woke' gets on my tits every time. I also hate 'draw' used instead of drawer.
I don't know, I think ethnic use is acceptable. 'Borrow us a fiver' is correct in Liverpool for example. If you said 'lend me a fiver' they would think you were trying to give them money.

I hate when people write “would/could of” instead of “... have” and mix up “there”, “they’re” and “their”.
Also: one guy in our office never breaks his emails into paragraphs and doesn’t use any punctuation marks. I simply ignore his missives because they’re usually quite long and a huge pain in the bottom to read.
(My English is far from perfect, but I have an excuse: it’s my third language.)

"Should of" instead of "should have"
"Out the window" instead of "out of the window"
And whenever I hear some scumbag say "I swear down" I know the little scrote is lying.
Also Liam Gallagher ending every sentence with "you know what I mean". He'll be first against the wall when the revolution comes.
To lighten the mood a little may I be the first to wish everyone a merry :christmas:

I live in the states and you are right! My own friends on Facebook have horrible writing skills. I may not be perfect, but I’ve known high school graduates that were nearly illiterate. It’s been around a while, but it got far worse when they introduced the, “No Child Left Behind”. Agenda. The problem was they had kids 23 years old in junior high, so the had to lower the standards to move them along. And no matter how poor your grades are, you pass! It might hurt their self esteem if you hold them back. And personally I think rap music has really damaged the vocabulary of today’s youth. There are people in my home town that I can’t understand a word they are saying! So let’s give them all a trophy and a pat on the back for a good try!

Russell, I spent a year in the US (not far from you: in Maryland) and I had a very hard time understanding people. Here in Dublin, things are much better, but some people still sound indecipherable to me... especially if they are from Cork :D

Oh absolutely, when I was in Junior High, just 8th and 9th in this school, there were several kids who drove to school. Two brothers were about 7 feet tall and smoked cigarettes in the halls. And no one dared tell them to put it out. They had beards and tattoos, If memory serves one was 20 years old.

You might find the London 'yoof' patois interesting Marco. It's a sort of indeterminate cockney/carribean mix. Weird!

So can I but I have to 'tune in'. The combination of a very strong accent and the extremely quick delivery is a killer, even if English is your first language. I've worked for a couple of companies where they have given me Northern Irish clients because I was the only one who could understand them.

Take a look at this. Tim Westwood in 'Pimp My Ride'. A middle aged bloke putting on the London 'Yoof' patois to cash in on the culture (or lack thereof). It would be hilarious if it wasn't so bloody pathetic. This is a public forum, so I can't use terms like wanker about him, but I can sure think them.

You'd think that black people, especially those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, would not be impressed at finding a comfortably off white boy trying to be "down with them". If I was a young black man, I wouldn't give him the steam off my shit, never mind my car for him to "pimp" it to his view of what's cool.
But I'm not, so I'm just embarrassed for him. Maybe in years to come he'll look at these videos of himself, and hang his head in shame.

New Cumnock is the village I go into if I take the wrong exit off the Dettingen roundabout, but regular Cumnock, on Afton Water, is one of the many villages dotted along one of my favourite biking roads form Dumfries to Ayr. Tip: if you come across a chippy called Frankies (might be in Coylton or Sanquhar), avoid their pies, they seem to be deep-fried.

True. I think it is because that they feel guilty about all the wealth they have and see it as a way of 'putting something back' or 'using their fame to do some good'. Mostly it just ends up as utterly banal and pointless, like when Cheryl Crow advised us to use less toilet paper.

If they wanted to give something back, they could donate to a charity, instead that get paid to be a spokes person for a charity, getting paid to beg money from poor people. A very few stars have come forward to say they don’t want to share their political views, because they realize no one really wants to hear it. And damn if they aren’t criticized for not picking a side! “They must surely be racist if they don’t want to talk about it?”

There is a chap somewhere in England who regularly posts eBay ads about hand-made passive preamps. He usually states right in the ad that he can make them to customer’s specifications. I asked him whether he could build me a passive preamp with 5 inputs, tape loop and a stepped attenuator and how much would it be... and got no response at all.
I wonder how he’s still in business...

I took some goods back to Tesco yesterday. It took about two minutes to get the amount credited back onto my debit card.
What I do object to elsewhere is being asked to sign a receipt for a refund to my card. I didn't have to sign anything to buy whatever it was!

Snoring with mouth open. I.e. On back can cause it. Smoking doesn't help neither does alcohol

It's not necessarily about taking a glass of water to bed, although that won't do any harm; it's about ensuring that your body is properly hydrated *before* you go to bed. Roughly how many litres of water (not tea, coffee or pop) do you drink per day? :)
Reducing your salt intake would also help, on various levels, as too much can be very bad for you. The only thing I add salt to is chips!
Marco.
Snoring with mouth open. I.e. On back can cause it. Smoking doesn't help neither does alcohol
Yup, that too. Also, not going to bed before properly brushing your teeth (and tongue), and cleansing your mouth of all the shit you've eaten throughout the day. Mouthwash the bastard to death, and properly get rid of any phlegm, before you hit the sack.
If you go to sleep with a nice clean mouth, and are properly hydrated, it can make all the difference to waking up feeling refreshed and less tired :)
Marco.
Marco.
Maybe a pint? But fluid is fluid, it doesn't need to be water in order to hydrate you.
I've got zero interest in 'leading a healthy lifesytyle'.
Yes, I've noticed that!
Here's something for you to read: http://www.naturalhydrationcouncil.org.uk/hydration-facts/faqs-on-hydration/
With all that salt you're eating, combined with a low-water intake [a pint a day is nowhere near enough], it's no wonder in the morning your mouth is as dry as an Arab's sand shoe! ;)
The other thing that helps with getting a good night's sleep, and feeling fresher in the morning, is in ensuring that the air quality in your bedroom is good, so that means good ventilation with adequate heating, removing any dampness, and keeping dust/dirt and clutter down to a minimum, so that whilst you're asleep, you're not breathing in excessive dust or mould spores.
Maintaining the air quality in your room is also good for your chest
Marco.
I do drink about 4 pints of tea a day. Green tea, caffeine free, no milk or sugar. So I think I am good for fluids.
Green tea is good for you. Also try to use alcohol free mouthwash
I've never used mouthwash. Just have a good swill round with Severn-Trent's finest.

I tried Listerine Zero mouthwash, but when I gargled, it foamed like mad. Looked like I had Rabies.
I agree about the snoring though. If I fall asleep in the chair with my head tilted back, I know I've been snoring, because I wake up with a sore throat, the telly's really loud and Mrs. P has a right face on her.
When she sleeps with her mouth open, she often wakes up with a sore throat, but for entirely different reasons which I won't go into. My secret.

Yup, that too. Also, not going to bed before properly brushing your teeth (and tongue), and cleansing your mouth of all the shit you've eaten throughout the day. Mouthwash the bastard to death, and properly get rid of any phlegm, before you hit the sack.

Fairy muff, I get what you mean. The most stressful thing I ever did was leave a very well-paid (and secure) sales job with a regular salary and company car, and start up my own business, initially with two friends as partners, who in the end I had to buy out because they were less than useless, and all the time with a huge mortgage to pay [back then we had quite a big house in a posh area of Renfrewshire, in Scotland]
Thankfully, it worked out well in the end because we made a success of it, and it's put us in the comfortable financial position we're in now, although it was certainly extremely stressful sometimes, working very long hours every day (often 8am to 10pm), and sometimes at weekends too, trying to ensure that enough money was in the kitty every month to pay the bills, when you had to generate the funds, month after month and year after year, all by yourself. That's pressure!
However, the benefit of being self-employed is that you're in control of your own destiny, as it were, with no boss continually making demands of you, and I was also lucky doing something that I actually enjoyed (bespoke picture framing, and also selling the artwork itself to large corporate clients), as I got to explore my 'arty' side and utilize my sales skills

The channel logos on screen! I briefly watched a film on 4 HD and this large logo is staring at me top left. Anyone with screenburn issues is going to have a nice collection for a start.
Then why do I need to see it constantly? I have an info button if I care to remind myself and an instant guide menu. Who the hell actually wants those logos on screen apart from a TV company full of its own self importance?
The aliens are coming and I see this bloody white logo up there!
I saw that the BBC dont do it or I couldnt see it on channels I checked.
Anyway its a real FFS :)
I have a piece of gaffer tape stuck across the top left corner of my screen......

Yes but its not needed as a logo is it. When have you ever been frustrated wanting to know which channel it is? A quick flick of the remote will remind us all if we care
When has it ever been a problem not having a logo on display? The ancient tellies used to have a display at the bottom but there is no led display on my Pvr now because we dont need them...thets what the guide and info buttons are for.
I've had cable since 1996 so I'm used to it. Yes, I'd rather they didn't do it but it's there to remind you, whether you want to be reminded or not, what channel you are watching that great show on. That is if you can find a great show of course.
Another youth, almost certainly a poxy student, in front of me in the off-license queue. Buying 2 packs of Haribo and a 2 litre bottle of Pepsi. Paying by card. Card declines first time but he insists they try it again. A long wait. Finally it goes through.
What sort of evening is he planning to have with a bottle of Pepsi and some packets of kids sweets? You can't imagine. And why does he not have £3.50 in his pocket? A man should carry money; do they not teach them that at school anymore? I suppose there is no time in between the lessons on climate change and going on visits to mosques. And it's an extra 80p to pay by card so they clearly aren't learning any financial common sense either.
He will be interviewed on the telly in a year or two complaining about the size of his student loan and his type 2 diabetes. You just watch.

On a couple of nights in the last week Ive had to pass these idiots screaming and shouting. One was running down the road to show off to his mates tonight so Ive had to hold back and it caused an awkward situation with oncoming traffic wanting to turn into my path
Im a bit sick of it. Who the hell goes out to wander round the streets in this weather? Its this age group sort of between 11 and 16 although they could be younger. Clearly they are too young to get in to the nightspots and they just seem to like hanging around Where are the parents and what are they saying when a 13 year old says he/she is going out with no clear purpose. The girls are worse than the lads
What sort of idiot hangs around street corners in -1 temperatures cos its saturday night? Why dont they go to a friends house and make Mary Berry cake recipes, watch Blue Peter or play a computer game :D
If they are not responsible enough to bring up kids or cant cope with them when they get a bit older, why are people having them?? Irresponsible lazy, bad minded parents = irresponsible troublesome kids.
Rant over. I will sort this world out :) Sorry but its a real FFS moment and these kids know they are causing trouble because they seem to like the attention.

When I was a teenager, back in the 70’s, we hid from the adults! We had secret meeting places in the nearby lumber company forests, a hundred of us would gather. But we were not seen, the adults had no idea where we were or what we were doing. In the Winter we had bon fires as big as trucks! So I don’t know what this new thing is about hanging out in the street and hollering at cars? Doesn’t sound too bright?

I would guess that it's not your box, it's the broadcaster leaving the 60 minute "End" marker in place which then causes your recording to terminate.

I find if I set it up on the menue to record a film prior to the film starting it records all of the film.
If I start watching the film and after 20 mins decide it bed time and press the record button it says " Now recording "
IT then decides when its time for bed for the Sony :) and stops , normally before the film ends
Get one of the latest generation 3TB Sky Q boxes - they're great!

That is true, I'm never concerned about missing something I wanted to see as it is always on again, usually the next day. I tape everything so when I come to watch it I can fast-forward through the adverts.
Re 'Taping' -
It may be an archaic term now but so what? I notice BBC presenters still refer to 'VT' when I'd guess there has not been a video tape in use there for a decade at least.
Can't even record on my sky box, but why bother, the program's repeat so often it's hard to find anything new.
Sure, but that doesn't apply if you're following a series (drama or whatever) and miss a crucial episode, if you're out, or were otherwise occupied. If you don't have access to catch up TV (or record said programme), then it spoils the whole thing, and you could be waiting for donkey's before that particular series is repeated again.
Also, Sky give you the option now of saving and keeping downloaded content, indefinitely (for the life of the box), so when you've got access to 3TB worth of data storage (which is quite a lot), you can download loads of interesting stuff, latest or classic movies from Sky Cinema, etc, to save and keep to watch again whenever you feel like it - all at the touch of a button.
As such, Sky Q is now an integral part of our home entertainment centre/cinema system, and we wouldn't be without it. It's never the case now, when we have time for watching TV, that we can't find *something* good to watch, whether it's on live TV, on any of the 100s of different channels available, or saved content we've downloaded
And then of course, there's the Blu-ray player! It's actually too tempting now, especially in this bad weather, just to park yourself down and never move.....
Marco.

Lol - you can describe things how you like. I just find some of the old terms folk use funny :D
Marco.
I prefer the old terms to the new ones which pointlessly replace perfectly good descriptors:
'I ripped it to my hard drive'
You mean you copied it to your hard drive? Well just say that, then!
Yeah, I get you there!
However, I don't see why 'taped' can't simply be replaced with 'recorded', which in the context we're discussing, is just a more accurate description today of what will have happened. It's also a word that's been around for as long as 'taped'...
Carrying on saying 'taped', whilst quaintly retro, could be argued as simply the behaviour of an intransigent dinosaur - a badge, however, I suspect you may be happy to wear with pride:eyebrows:
Marco.
I suppose 'record' is equally valid and less anachronistic but no-one I know ever said that. 'Tape me the new Tull album' or 'Don't forget to tape Match of The Day' was what people used to say.
I don't see any reason to change the habits of a lifetime just because the technology has moved on.
I don't see any reason to change the habits of a lifetime just because the technology has moved on.
...and that says it all!:D;)
Back in the day, I'd also have said 'taped'. However, I've now 'updated my programming', as it were, to replace it with 'recorded'. I'm not such a creature of habit:)

Tape seems prehistoric now and they seem like Rube Goldberg machines with all those belts and capstans :) dont get me completely wrong in that I love pottering with it but you begin to wonder.
I will just hard disc a whole radio show now and then perhaps take the best stuff off onto a minidisc mix disc. I must learn how to edit it on computer

I love my colour TV, it makes watching films a real event. I slowly open its sliding wooden doors while singing the Pearl & Dean tune (pa pa pa pa pa pa pa pa pa etc) and the missus comes round with a tray of ice creams and albatross.
Only kidding, I'm not that much of a dinosaur. But I don't know what I'll do when my 8 year old Panasonic plasma dies. I just love the picture, skin tones look right, not like the latest super sharp images on modern stuff which to me makes people look a bit like you're watching a video game.

Its not too bad actually through a scart onto a HD telly. Ive got the Jarre Houston concert and a few others that were never released on disc...yes I know they are generally on you tube now. I have industry recorded tapes and the hold up very well. I thought I would see more drop out but its pretty good considering. I had Video 8 once and that was very good with a home recording
I have remote control scart switching boxes and I go RGB when its supported. I like firing it up from time to time. What am I going to get for a VCR now....a fiver?...... so my way of thinking is I wont abandon the facility to play a 40 year history of VHS tapes
No scart inputs on my telly. There is a VHF input though.

Hi Mark,
I presume you're buying your fruit from supermarkets? If so, I'm not surprised, simply because the vast majority of it is sourced from far-flung places of the world, because that's where it costs less, and so is FAR from being fresh!
The only way to find reasonably fresh fruit in a supermarket is to buy only in season and British - and even more so, when its been locally sourced. Otherwise, try a proper fruiterer (there are often many market stalls in town centres now), or buy direct from local farms.
The difference in quality, and most of all flavour, will be night and day!! :)

We already have thought crime legislation. It started in Scotland using the law to ban so-called 'sectarian' songs on pain of jail time (which can include God Save the Queen in certain circumstances) and extended into 'hate crime' legislation where you can be convicted purely on the feelings (no joke) of a self-declared 'victim'. Here's a particularly scary example https://www.spectator.co.uk/2016/08/what-happened-when-i-was-charged-with-a-hate-crime/
the sectarian bit really didnt work and i think was modified and done to death. that case you highlighted is typical of the crazy laws we, the accused have to put up with. no wonder people dont want to have any communication with neighbours or travel in public transport

I don't know for sure, but it was a hot topic at the last meeting of my local Sylvester Stallone's Mum's Arse Cheeks Contours Appreciation society, or MACCA for short.
Plus she came to me in a dream last night. That's what you get for eating manky supermarket fruit too close to bedtime.

Talking fruit, local Sainsbury's sells all sort of tomatoes. I've tried them all from the most expensive vine ripened blah blah to the own brand 'basics' odd shaped efforts at a quarter the price.
Only the weird own brand have any taste at all.
Guess which one they don't sell anymore...

To be honest, my Zappa records just don't get played anymore, apart from 'Hot 'Rats' and 'Overnite Sensation'. And my steadfast refusal to buy any other format but vinyl for Zappa would make attempting to complete his discography all but impossible.
If I only buy one more Zappa record, YAWYI would be it. I haven't heard it in years. Particular favourites were 'Dumb All Over' and the 'Suicide Chump' part.
If you've never seen it before, 'Overnite Sensation' and 'Apostrophe' were covered in a 'Classic Albums' series. Contributions from Ruth Underwood and Billy Bob Thornton amongst others, definitely worth a watch.

I like Them And Us and Sheikh Yerbouti the best. So I suppose I'm a Zappa Populist, not a real fan. I've a fair bit on vinyl, some on both cd and vinyl. Ship Arriving To Save A Drowning Witch has its moments too. Not listened to that in years, I'm going to get to that.
Anyway he was a super-cool dude and sorely missed. They sometimes show a concert from the 1980s on Sky Arts channel. Just brilliant; the arrangements are so complicated yet they all just sail through it. Worth watching for it to come on again, if you've not got it already.

I've only attended one Zappa concert. It was at the Wembly Arena in London and was part of his 'Titties and Beer' tour. It was brilliant. I used to be a big Zappa fan having all but his first LP, but lost interest after 'Waka Jawaka', 'Chunga's Revenge' and 'Live from the Filmore East'. I simply tired of his "vaudeville" and infantile smut. However my interest in Zappa was rekindled when I heard the Ensemble Modern perform parts from 'Yellow Shark' in London, and since then I have been meaning to listen to his other work, such as 'Jazz from Hell' et alia.

Love some Zappa! I bought some CD’s of a few early albums, and the sound is not great. But he could play that guitar! I love the 4 minute solo in Pajama People, to me, that’s what is meant by “Shredding”. He takes the basic melody and cuts it up some 16 different ways.

Just been on the phone to Google today about some BM RGCH 06 gift card error code and they didnt even know what the error code really meant. (dont give us error codes if they cant be pinpointed!) Its been so frustrating. Although they tried to help they were clueless about the problem. They wouldnt credit me with the amount and I was basically told to keep trying. I had to come away and open a new google email primary account to get it to work.
It was find everything out about me but dont really solve the problem...do you know what I mean?
It also made me realise just how tied up we are with them especially on android phones and how much you cant alter priority accounts without possibly having to factory reset the phone and lose all data... a nightmare I just about avoided. Thats mainly because their processes dont like losing the handle they have on me with the primary account and all the usage data they have on me.
I was happily downloading the purchases on my gift card balance then the next minute nothing works other than pop up messages asking I sign into the original account I just deleted...luckily I was able to recover it....Big brother is watching me :)
I dont like these mega corporations and how they want to know all about me for advertising and analytics. I really dont think its healthy for the consumer when Google get too big and it just seems like thay have a hand in every pie. It felt like a big brother moment today or a scene from Bladerunner :(

They do that because they are concerned that if they are seen to be making any money out of hi-fi people will disapprove. So it is to re-assure all the holier-than-thou types that they are not profiteering. Why anyone would care what they think is another matter.
Next time I sell something I'm going to say 'I bought this for fifty quid less than I'm asking but that was because I took advantage of some mug to buy it cheap and now I'm gleefully profiteering. So screw you.'

...I wouldn't mind people making profit from listings if the demand was there. A great example would be finding an old boxed pair of LS3/5A that were bought for £50 a few decades ago, it'd be mental to sell them for that.

I dont mind that actually.I like a blurb with some info so I can set my BS detector accordingly. Its better than just a high price with no information. It doesnt mean that I have to believe them but it gives an idea what they are about and perhaps a chink in the barrier to make an offer.
I will sometimes put in an offer for the price of a phonecall
For negotiation its best that its not on ebay. I like a good blurb as long as it doesnt go overboard. Its unusual for someone to say what they paid and be honest about it but at least it gives me an idea what may be in their heads.
Ive pretty much decided what I would pay anyway. Really the product has sold itself if I am looking for it. Nobody has to do much of a sales job if I am interested. Maybe if it was mint looking when I saw it I might be tempted to go up in price.
I sometimes give more money because Im so happy it looks mint and has been well looked after...I will slip em a bonus :)

You would, but I've seen people criticised for doing it.
And the reverse is also true, if you saw some minters on a boot sale for £50 would you tell the bloke they are worth at least 10 times that or just snap them up? As far as I'm concerned it is someone's own business which road they go down, but regrettably there are people who are absolutely as pure and perfect as the driven snow who will castigate you to the ends of the earth if you snap them up for fifty and then flog them to some bloke in Japan for £2K.
Why would anyone begrudge or resent a private individual from making a profit, legally, no matter how big, on anything they sell? That simply smacks of jealousy, which is one of the most abhorrent of human traits, and annoys me immensely!
I couldn't give a flying fuck how much money anyone makes when selling a piece of hi-fi equipment. If you've got the balls and the ability to sell something to someone, willing and able to pay it, at 10 times or 100 times its original worth, then well done - call yourself an entrepreneur!!

If you're referring to ebay and looking at used gear, change the search criteria accordingly, it cuts out a lot of dross. Also, start with items priced highest, there are usually not that many expensive bits to get through before the sensibly priced items come on-screen.

Those that outbid you at the last minute are most likely using 'sniper' software. In fact usually the only way to stand a good chance of winning is to bid at the last minute (actually within the last few seconds of the auction ending). You have to set your limit way above the later bids and just hope you don't have someone bidding a high amount just before you bid.
walpurgis
24-03-2018, 15:52
I win what I'm after about 75% of the time.
I never bid early, nor do I bid what might be considered the next increment.
I do my own 'sniping' and bid about seven seconds before the end. That does not leave time for anybody to place another bid unless they use a snipe.
My bid is normally the max I'd want to pay. If it sells for more then I've lost nothing, as it's an item I'd not be interested in at a higher price.
Often, the item sells for less than I've bid anyway, as the winning bid is applied proportionally to the previous bid, so I get it cheaper.
Pigmy Pony
24-03-2018, 16:10
Geoff, your last line confused me a bit.
If the bidding has gone to, say, £90 with 7 seconds left, and I bid £100 and win, are you saying that I wouldn't then have to pay £100?
depends on the increments its going up in but it wont be 10 a go.. probably pay £91
walpurgis
24-03-2018, 16:18
I don't know offhand what percentage above the lower bid is applied, but if the bid before my winning bid was £90 and I'd bid say £150, I'd expect to get the item for about £100.
Geoff, your last line confused me a bit.
If the bidding has gone to, say, £90 with 7 seconds left, and I bid £100 and win, are you saying that I wouldn't then have to pay £100?
Yes, possibly. The bid you make is your maximum bid. The bid price goes up increments, so if the last bid was £90, ebay may tell you to bid £95. If you have already set up a bid for a maximum amount of £100, then if it turns out that you are the winner with the bid of £95, then that is what you will pay.

Yes because its not a true auction in that sense as it relies on sniping with seconds to go so everyone else is committed. If something is really in demand you are unlikely to win it unless you put in a mega trump all offer at the end which has its own risks if someone else is feeling the same way.
I needed to win my dad a 1940s projector he is very keen on. the thing is probably worth about £130 max and the bids were hovering around £60.
I put in a last seconds mega offer of £400 in a calculated risk that the competitors final bids would be in that £100 to £200 range. High enough that I didnt think the other bidders would go anywhere near that but dangerously exposed to other over the odds bids. A cheeky leeway if someone else had a similar idea.
We won the item for £178 which the other bidder thought would trump all. Over the odds but it made my father very happy and he got a load of extra free gifts when he went to collect it
Now that could have backfired and its not recommended behaviour. We wouldnt have paid much over £178 for it and would have had some wriggling out to do. However its not a true auction where we remain in the room until the winner scares everyone else off. I only do that on very rare occasions.
There are many items I would own now if it had been in an auction room because I would not have misjudged so badly or given up

Yes - if I am really keen to win something, I will put in a bid at the last moment with what I think is a sufficently high maximum to do the trick. Exactly how much that is will depend on the most recent bidding history, and if the bidding has already exceeded what I could afford I don't bid at all. But in all cases, even with a 'trump all' bid the amount is always what I can afford. Sometimes I have won an item, but have had to pay more than I would have wished, but less than my affordable maximum.

Sometimes I have won an item, but have had to pay more than I would have wished, but less than my affordable maximum.
That's what I used to do, bid the max I was prepared to pay at the last minute. Worked so well I've had to stop buying on eBay altogether.

Is it just me, or am I just a bastard…. The other day I found myself bidding on a big AV amp that I don’t even have room for. When I thought about the reason why, I couldn’t bear the thought of someone else getting it too cheap!.
I couldn't do that. My purchases are carefully thought through and I only bid on stuff I have a use for (if not an immediate use :)).
I'm likely bidding today. There's a bit of a 'sleeper' out there that looks as though nobody has spotted. :eyebrows:
Those that outbid you at the last minute are most likely using 'sniper' software. In fact usually the only way to stand a good chance of winning is to bid at the last minute (actually within the last few seconds of the auction ending). You have to set your limit way above the later bids and just hope you don't have someone bidding a high amount just before you bid.
This is what I do, go maybe 10% over what I would want to pay as a max bid, set it up in sniping software, then forget about it. The software bids 3 seconds before the listing ends.
I always forget to bid otherwise, so prefer to do this, even if it annoys people. So many use sniping software, if you can’t beat them join them.
Early bids draw too much attention to listings and inflate prices.
