Absolutely true. Not just with visuals but also with sound. Digital recording is better but if the content isn't any good there's not much benefit in it being crystal clear.Quote:

I agree with that !! I think that their is a lot of factors that come into play when we discuss old vs new etc. I (as with a lot of you) can give examples of where analogue just fits the bill better. One example is where the band "Airbourne" opted to record their first album using all analogue equipment due to the fact that they felt digital recording could not replicate the analogue sound of older recordings and, to be honest, I think they were right !!Quote:

getting a little of the right type of distortion in the right places is what good vinyl does well to make peoples hearing happy. doesnt work as well once you get used to none of course and then can become wearing. hearing isnt all about ear; its about what the brain wants to hear too

So first up an album from 1998 by perhaps a relatively unknown name outside of the Jazz world, however, this guy has an ability to play the lyric of a tune to perfection with interpretation but never loosing the listener in an indulgent avant-garde demonstration of his talent; a great example being track 3 "Strange Little Smile/With You I'm Born Again".

Now we follow on with another guitarist, singer-songwriter and composer and his bands 1980 third album, often overshadowed by the later and perhaps more commercially successful albums, this album still achieved Platinum sales in the USA, Italy, Finland and New Zealand, with double Platinum sales in the UK and Canada.
The album featured Roy Bittan on keyboards and Sid McGinnis on Guitars. Well this is a tough one ! Certainly I have many remastered CD reissues that totally wipe the floor with the original CD releases, the reissues are by far closer in tonality to the vinyl pressing particularly when the original recording is analogue, I think its more about how much care and attention was taken in digital mastering originally. Unfortunately, many early digital recordings were very poor by comparison to the "sota" analogue recordings of the same period, which means that no amount of remastering is going to help. Of course there are some examples of great early digital recordings, take a listen to Donald Fagen''s The Nightfly this album has not to my knowledge been remastered and reissued which is perhaps testament to the care and attention given to the original recording and production. Certainly where ADC was treated with respect and care in the early days the results were pretty good but many remastered reissues of analogue recordings have benefited from greatly improved ADC in the same way we have all benefited from better DAC in players and seperate DAC's. However, the old addage applies " Garbage in, garbage out ' if the recording is poor the best remastering in the world can't create what isn't there, so the best you can hope for is some sympathetic tonal correction and noise reduction that doesn't rob the music of its original "soul" !Quote:

I think Linn were exactly right about GIGO with turntables. I don't think it applies to digital source which these days are not expensive to get right - but I've no experience of the ten quid Ching Wing Dung so maybe that's an exception. ;)Quote:
