For me stuff like The beatles/Stones is better suited to vinyl, although I have Abbey rd on cd, but that has a warmer sound overall. The white album I couldn't even manage on vinyl, just sold it. The thing with vinyl is it seems to place the music better, its more grounded, on CD you've got all those 1s and 0s flying around and it just sounds edgy, impossible with classical too, may be its my hearing, I'm quite sensitive in public places to people who have their mobile phone on loud speaker for instance. Of course buying on cd is much cheaper, and I will continue to buy them in some cases, just got 3 'This mortal coil' cds, I have their first lp original, that was mint, a rare find. It was 10x the cost of the cds though. Life's too short for seeking out first pressings of anything you like.

I have to say that with some CD's, when they remaster them it takes away a little of the warmth of the original analogue CD version so, for me, I sometimes keep my original CD version than get a remastered version. Some remastered versions can sound too processed and a little harsh - it depends on lots of factors doesn't it........... your ears, your hi-fi system, the quality of the signal source from the CD player, room acoustics and all manner of things !!!

So first up an album from 1998 by perhaps a relatively unknown name outside of the Jazz world, however, this guy has an ability to play the lyric of a tune to perfection with interpretation but never loosing the listener in an indulgent avant-garde demonstration of his talent; a great example being track 3 "Strange Little Smile/With You I'm Born Again".

Although he has some 15 albums of his own he has guested on some 70 plus albums with the likes of Ray Brown, Harry Connick Jr., Benny Green and perhaps most notably with Diana Krall.

Now we follow on with another guitarist, singer-songwriter and composer and his bands 1980 third album, often overshadowed by the later and perhaps more commercially successful albums, this album still achieved Platinum sales in the USA, Italy, Finland and New Zealand, with double Platinum sales in the UK and Canada.

The album featured Roy Bittan on keyboards and Sid McGinnis on Guitars. Mark's brother Dave had recorded most of his guitar parts for the album but having left the band following heated arguments with Mark, Dave's guitar parts were all rerecorded mostly by Mark.

Last up and a vinyl album and original release pressing from 1983. Produced by Trevor Horn who also provides some backing vocals, this album features the enduring single "Owner of a Lonely Heart" which is also the bands first and only Billboard number 1 and reached the top 10 in 11 other countries but only reached 28 in the UK.

Well this is a tough one ! Certainly I have many remastered CD reissues that totally wipe the floor with the original CD releases, the reissues are by far closer in tonality to the vinyl pressing particularly when the original recording is analogue, I think its more about how much care and attention was taken in digital mastering originally. Unfortunately, many early digital recordings were very poor by comparison to the "sota" analogue recordings of the same period, which means that no amount of remastering is going to help. Of course there are some examples of great early digital recordings, take a listen to Donald Fagen''s The Nightfly this album has not to my knowledge been remastered and reissued which is perhaps testament to the care and attention given to the original recording and production. Certainly where ADC was treated with respect and care in the early days the results were pretty good but many remastered reissues of analogue recordings have benefited from greatly improved ADC in the same way we have all benefited from better DAC in players and seperate DAC's. However, the old addage applies " Garbage in, garbage out ' if the recording is poor the best remastering in the world can't create what isn't there, so the best you can hope for is some sympathetic tonal correction and noise reduction that doesn't rob the music of its original "soul" !
