Well this is a tough one ! Certainly I have many remastered CD reissues that totally wipe the floor with the original CD releases, the reissues are by far closer in tonality to the vinyl pressing particularly when the original recording is analogue, I think its more about how much care and attention was taken in digital mastering originally. Unfortunately, many early digital recordings were very poor by comparison to the "sota" analogue recordings of the same period, which means that no amount of remastering is going to help. Of course there are some examples of great early digital recordings, take a listen to Donald Fagen''s The Nightfly this album has not to my knowledge been remastered and reissued which is perhaps testament to the care and attention given to the original recording and production. Certainly where ADC was treated with respect and care in the early days the results were pretty good but many remastered reissues of analogue recordings have benefited from greatly improved ADC in the same way we have all benefited from better DAC in players and seperate DAC's. However, the old addage applies " Garbage in, garbage out ' if the recording is poor the best remastering in the world can't create what isn't there, so the best you can hope for is some sympathetic tonal correction and noise reduction that doesn't rob the music of its original "soul" !

I'm a great believer in the saying "Garbage In, Garbage Out - that applies to the quality of the components in the Hi-Fi system.

If you've got a £10 CD player made by Ching Wing Dung and play a CD on that player through a £5000 system (NOT THAT YOU'D BUY A £10 PLAYER TO GO WITH THAT KIND OF SET-UP) it would sound crap!!

If you've got a £1000 CD player made by a proper Hi-Fi component company and play the same CD on that player through a £5000 system, the difference would be extremely noticeable !!!

I remember from the 80's that marketing slogan "GIGO" ("Garbage In, Garbage Out") used (I think) by Linn to demonstrate their philosophy at the time regarding their components and I always agreed with it !!

I think Linn were exactly right about GIGO with turntables. I don't think it applies to digital source which these days are not expensive to get right - but I've no experience of the ten quid Ching Wing Dung so maybe that's an exception.

On the whole I would agree. But with reference to Donald Fagin's 'The Nightfly', it maybe one of the first digital recordings to appear on vinyl, but it was not the first - that honour goes to Ry Cooder's 'Bop Till You Drop - and it is a terrible recording: the soundstage is flat and the instrumentalists pop up and down like the price flags on an old fashioned cash register. If an album needed remastering, this is a prime candidate.

I'm going to do an experiment on the subject of original CD vs RM CD. I already have a 2020 RM of Tears For Fears The Hurting so, I've just decided to purchase an original 01 matrix 1983 mercury UK release of the album (which I did own in 1983/4 but it got stolen along with my car in the 90's); I'm going to give the both of 'em an audition on my set-ups (both the Pioneer and the Mission systems) and see what I think; after all, the best judge of 'em (to me) is my ears so, we'll see !!!

I've just got to wait for the orig version to arrive in the post this week (hopefully !!!)

I know, this has been done so many times before and it is a boring subject but, just for my own personal edification, I'm going to do it to see how it ties in with comments I've read on here.

Yes, I know, we've all got different systems, price brackets of equipment, tonal ranges of hearing, room acoustics etc., etc.
