Be honest it's just the same with yourself, in other ways. Modern TV shows are filmed in higher resolution, with better sound quality, some clever camera/CGI techniques, and often plots that are often less predictable. But... we still watch Minder, Magnum PI etc, which you doubtless prefer to anything currently being made.

The current crop of Jaguar cars are more comfortable, faster, more economical than they ever were, but I bet you'd much rather own a 1960s Mk 10.

Absolutely true. Not just with visuals but also with sound. Digital recording is better but if the content isn't any good there's not much benefit in it being crystal clear.

Although the conversation I referred to was about which has better sound quality, it wasn't about the other factors.

I agree with that !! I think that their is a lot of factors that come into play when we discuss old vs new etc. I (as with a lot of you) can give examples of where analogue just fits the bill better. One example is where the band "Airbourne" opted to record their first album using all analogue equipment due to the fact that they felt digital recording could not replicate the analogue sound of older recordings and, to be honest, I think they were right !!

I think the old saying of "horses for courses" is definitely correct. When it comes to CD vs Vinyl, I have to ask myself do I want to hear scratches, crackles, nicks and ticks (especially in a silent or atmospheric part of a recording) ?? The answer is a resounding NO!!!!

getting a little of the right type of distortion in the right places is what good vinyl does well to make peoples hearing happy. doesnt work as well once you get used to none of course and then can become wearing. hearing isnt all about ear; its about what the brain wants to hear too

I had this conversation with a vinyl man not so long ago. I said 'You're a musician, you've made recordings in studios, you must hear that the ambient sound around the instruments that the mic captures gets totally blotted out by the noise from the vinyl?'

He said 'Yes, I know it does, but vinyl still has a certain something I like that I can't define.'

Absolutely, for that reason I only buy nr mint with some records, like King crimson, lots of 'between the notes' passages.

For me stuff like The beatles/Stones is better suited to vinyl, although I have Abbey rd on cd, but that has a warmer sound overall. The white album I couldn't even manage on vinyl, just sold it. The thing with vinyl is it seems to place the music better, its more grounded, on CD you've got all those 1s and 0s flying around and it just sounds edgy, impossible with classical too, may be its my hearing, I'm quite sensitive in public places to people who have their mobile phone on loud speaker for instance. Of course buying on cd is much cheaper, and I will continue to buy them in some cases, just got 3 'This mortal coil' cds, I have their first lp original, that was mint, a rare find. It was 10x the cost of the cds though. Life's too short for seeking out first pressings of anything you like.
