Poor scrappy first half, should have taken a couple of chances though.
Poor scrappy first half, should have taken a couple of chances though.See they got beat. Typical I have to say. Too many players think they are "good"
I thought that Rangers would've sneaked it over the 90+ mins, bit it wasn't to be. TBH, this result has been on the cards since Rangers came back from the winter break, which is something that they don't seem to enjoy. Last season 3 points were dropped at Kilmarnock, this time it's Hearts...
It's all very well scraping wins and getting the three points, as has happened recently, but when nothing is changing in the team in order to improve performances, then eventually you run out of steam and/or ideas, and the poor performances resulting in lucky wins start turning into draws or defeats. And for me, that's what's happened to Rangers since the break: too many players look stale/jaded, and combined with them missing key players such as Morelos, and even more importantly, Tavernier, that has contributed to the current malaise.
It's also obvious that the quality of back-up players Rangers have in most positions, aren't up to the same standards as those from Celtic, and if that isn't addressed by the end of this transfer window, I think it's what will ultimately lose Rangers the title. Celtic haven't been particularly great either since coming back from the break, but even with injuries to key players, those that come in don't really weaken the team, and so we've still had enough to win both league matches comfortably - and unlike Rangers, we have a number of creative players able to break down tight defences, home or away.
So Rangers dropping three points today has effectively nullified us losing at Celtic Park, and it now means that every game Rangers play is a 'must win', because if they were to lose again and the gap became 8 points, even with Rangers having a game in hand, I don't think they'd come back from that... *But* Celtic also need to keep on winning and, crucially fielding their strongest starting 11 in each position, rather than Lennon simply playing a lot of his favourites!
The respective results from the upcoming run of home and away games, for both sides of the old firm, I feel will be pivotal, in terms of where the title will go. In that respect, with Rangers having their next few games at home, they *must* take full points from them and hope that they can get Tavernier back, ASAP, as he's such a vital player for Rangers, and also get more from some of their key midfield players who, as Grant says, perhaps think they're a bit better than they actually are, and can simply stroll through games.
Well done though to Hearts. I was pleased for their manager, as I like how he's trying to get them to play, and with most of their big guns back and new signings looking good, I think they'll get more good results now and start rapidly climbing the table.
Marco.
No further thoughts - Grant or Robin?

Yeah we were shite, and I think several players were well below acceptable levels.
A man of few words, as usual, lol! I like to drill down into the details, whether my team wins or loses:)
What I don't get is the halfhearted attempt by the Rangers board to stop us winning 9-in-a-row, and their lack of activity in the January transfer market. They either go all out and back Gerrard 100% with all the money they can, or simply resign themselves to having an inferior squad of players, and give us the upper hand.
Not much point, IMO, in refusing to sell Morelos because he's too vital to their title challenge, but then ignoring other areas of the team that need strengthening...

Lol - well done, indeed. Always good to see the wee teams giving the big ones a shock in the cup! I'd expect Liverpool though to finish the job at Anfield, but they may also decide that as the league is their priority, they'd be better off without contending with cup games, but knowing how much of a winner Klopp is, I doubt it;)
Pleased also to see Norwich won yesterday at Burnley:)

This transfer window has been very disappointing although there are a few still left, I though a few more would have offloaded, we are badly needing a few more in. We have a team that are good enough to beat anyone in the league if they all play well but there were 8/9 having a bad day. Beating Celtic is one thing but that doesn’t win you the league.

Nah, I’d agree, Klop is too competitive, and has a strong enough squad to do both. I’d expect them to win at Anfield too, but you never know. And that’s what makes cup competitions so exciting!
Of course happy to see the Canaries progress to the last 16 - as long as the confidence spills into the Prem. I still think we have enough to survive, but it will be close if we do. Last time we won a cup was League Cup in ‘85, but also got relegated the same season. Hoping history doesn’t repeat itself, although we’ve never won the FA Cup so of course I would want to see us do well there, but Premiership survival would just about trump it in order to help us build. Have to keep reminding myself that the Farke/Webber 5 year plan didn’t expect us to be in the Premier this season so we’ve already exceeded expectations.

Not just that, so many played badly. The inclusion again of flannegan at full back caused much of the issues. Polster or the lad Patterson should have played, preferably the latter. Their left back needed pinning which would have changed a lot of the game.
But too many players just came back from their dubai trip and just go through motions. Happened last year too.
Stevie seems to have a cleak, where some guys always get the nod over others, who may have been given half an hr once and he didn't fancy them. He is mono dimensional.
The lad Edmunson is another who gets sweet fa. Docherty hasn't been on, period yet was player of year down south.
The list goes on..
So until the best players get played instead of sg's pals then we are gonna continue as we are. Sadly alf and tav are proving to be the ones when out cause team to fail as we won't replace like for like, yet try to play with the same shape
Good post, Grant. I like it when folks get stuff off their chests and talk about their team, even when things aren't going/haven't gone well! Sometimes I get the impression that this thread exists solely for the purpose of discussing wins, as some folks seem to hide when their team isn't doing so well and only surface when things are different!;)
And btw, I'm not referring to either Robin or you... Anyway, let's see more discussion in future, from EVERYONE, analysing their team's defeats, as much as their wins:exactly:
So until the best players get played instead of sg's pals then we are gonna continue as we are.
Yup, but I could say almost the exact same of Lennon...
The difference is that Celtic have better back-up players than Rangers in most positions, so are more able to cope with losing some of their key players, or Lennon simply fielding his (arguably inferior) pals. It's been like that most of the season for us, TBH, in terms of injuries. Very rarely has our manager been able to field an established/settled starting 11, and the team had any real consistency. which up until recently Rangers have had.
It's only now that some injuries and suspensions have combined to highlight the shortcomings in the Rangers squad, and which I feel must be addressed, before it's too late, if they're to have a realistic chance of winning the title... However, I can now see both teams going on winning runs in the SPL until they meet again at Ibrox on 15th March.
But if Rangers don't get to play their game in hand against St Johnstone before that date (which given the fixture backlog seems unlikely), and Celtic win all their games before then (as do Rangers), and therefore the 5 point gap remains, then for me the game at Ibrox will become a title decider, with only a win being good enough for Rangers, as at that stage of the season an 8 point lead for Celtic, IMO, would be too much for Rangers to claw back.
Anyway, we'll see what happens, as there's a LOT of football to be played before then, and with Morelos back for the visit of Ross County on Wednesday, I'm sure Rangers will very quickly return to winning ways!

Will be interesting to see what team Gerrard selects tomorrow night, although Morelos will be back, and it’s very clear that trying slot Defoe into a Morelos set up doesn’t work. Defoe is a very different type of player. The midfield hopefully cannot play as bad again but we don’t have that many to choose from which is becoming more and more noticeable.
As for playing Flanagan don’t get me started.

Jack is out so I guess Arfield will be in.. No doubt we play better away
Eh? Not sure the stats bear that out... ;)

Defoe is a great goal scorer [even at his age], as the stats show (I think 16 so far for the season, many of those off the bench), but he NEEDS SERVICE, and therefore preferably playing as part of a front two. He feeds off of balls played into him, and given good service, in that respect, will score more than he misses.
However, a lone striker he is not. He won't 'bully' defenders and force mistakes from them, like Morelos does. So when played in that position, particularly from the off, he struggles, although as he's shown, coming off the bench in that role he can be effective once opposing defences tire.
You should go for Shankland, from Dundee Utd, as I think he would be the ideal foil for Morelos, as part of a front two, or as a lone striker can stretch defences in a way that Defoe doesn't, and he's a born goalscorer, just dying for a step up in standard! Shouldn't cost too much either...
However, strikers aside, I think you're missing Tavernier more, as maligned as he often was, he's *crucial* to the way Rangers play, and your attacking threat and danger created from dead ball situations is suffering as a result.

utd now wanting 3m for shanks.. lol.. tbh i think we should have taken a chance on him when he was free, but not now. Last time he was in the prem he wasnt much use.
I'd take the big Aussie from Livy before hime.. Dykes.. he can hold his own physically and has scored a fair few too

£3m? They're having a laugh! Must be because he's been capped by Scotland:D:doh:
Half that, maybe... Or £1.75m tops. Like you say, he needs to prove himself at the top level. Dykes? Possibly or what about Florian Kamberi from Hibs? I've always rated him.

I think you need both, Robin. But a decent attacking midfielder (capable of scoring 10+ goals a season) would be a valuable addition to your squad.
Marco.

Interesting comments from Michael Beale
“We have played with two 10s in every game this season. They're free, like no10s in any system to overload certain areas. Systems are not as important as the players within them. We lost, didn’t perform & it hurts, we move on ASAP".
See there was no real change at the top with top two winning.

Very true Grant, would prefer the way Celtic win to be honest 3 up in the first 20 minutes.
Yeah, we were *devastating* going forward in the first half, and could've easily been 5 or 6-0 up... Best I've seen us play for ages! HOWEVER, I was NOT impressed at all with how we took our foot off the gas in the second half and treated it like a training exercise!!:nono:
Firstly, because winning the league could come down to goal difference, and secondly, as the game was won by half time, it was the perfect time to field Klimala and see what he could've done for 45 or 30 mins, and rested Edouard, but Lenny brings on Mikey Johnston, takes off Simunovic and puts Brown into the back three, and in the process completely destroys the fluency and rhythm we had in the first half !
Ok, Simunovic was recovering from an injury (when is he not?), but it was entirely Celtic's fault (not St Johnstone being much better) that they didn't score more goals, and we may live to regret that. We should've gone for the jugular and put nine past them...! Quite honestly, that could've been achieved, such was our near-total dominance over the 90 mins.
However, I've got to say, I really liked the formation we played in the first half, especially the three at the back and two up front, with the wingbacks, as it looked extremely solid and potent, and even better, Griffiths and Edouard look to have the makings of one of the best partnerships we've had upfront since Sutton and Larsson! Potentially very exciting...
So, for me, when the right players are available, and when adopting that formation could hurt the opposition, we should continue to play with two strikers. My guess is that if both Eddie and Griffo are fit, that's what you'll be facing in the forthcoming meeting of the two teams at Ibrox;)
Marco.
Any views on that, chaps? And how did Rangers play, despite the result - did they play well and win, or merely do just enough? What about this calf injury for Defoe - will that now mean the coffers at Ibrox will need dipped into again before the transfer window closes on Saturday?:)

Only just seen the Rangers goals, Celtic were 3 up after 20 minutes or so, sounds like another good display by them. Defoe scored and laid on the second, hopefully we played better than we did on Sunday.

Well, the good news for you is that you've strengthened areas of the team that needed strengthening, and I predict that both Hagi and Kamberi will be a big success! Had you not done so, then in my view you would've kissed ta-ta to the title...
You wonder though, if those moves would've happened had Defoe not been injured?:hmm:

it is actually wrong as McLeish should be 5th
also Souness should be above walter smith. i will go with my choice bar i forgot to move Burns down a bit
o'neill, lennon, Rodgers, Advocatt, McLeish, Strachan, Smith, Souness.. Not sure the order of Stevie and Burns..

gerrard no data but likely to be around burns at moment. was low last year as he was new and was building a side i guess.. in 40's around april
Interesting that there are four Celtic managers in the top 6:)
Marco.
some of lennon and rodgers was of course when there was no challenge from rangers so that makes a difference to an extent. wim jansen should have been in too he is over 64
And of course when Celtic were in the doldrums/an utter shambles, and in free fall, throughout the 90s, resulting in nearly going bankrupt in 1994, Rangers had little challenge, aside from the odd hurrah from Aberdeen and latterly from Tommy Burns when he came to Celtic, when they won their 9-in-a-row... ;)
Ronny Deila was in charge of Celtic for the bulk of the time Rangers were out of the top division. Regardless, you still have to beat whoever's in front of you, and both Rodgers and Lennon have a superb record of consistently doing just that, and which therefore reflects in their respective win ratios:)
Marco.
i see rangers were shite again... league over. time to experiment.... sorry stevo, not good enough.;)
Nah, the league's not over. Bollox to that, particularly if Celtic don't win tomorrow. Aberdeen were simply determined not to get pumped again 5-0, and came with a game plan, which worked. It's happened to us before, too.
Once Morelos comes up to speed again and your new signings bed in (apparently Hagi impressed in the short time he was on), you'll be ok. I still think the title race will go down to the wire:)

Not seen today’s game, but we really need to be winning theses matches.
Indeed, Robin. However, if Celtic don't win tomorrow, and historically we struggle at Hamilton (just scraping wins on the last two occasions), and on artificial pitches in general. Plus there are still two old firm games to go, with six points to be won or lost there, regardless of anything else, so defo not over,
You're also missing Tav, BIG time! Once he's back playing, things will be different, trust me. You also need to get more out of Kent, who's currently not the player he was during his first spell at Rangers.
I'll be watching the highlights of the Rangers match tomorrow on Sportscene.
Marco.
Good result, but we had to work very hard for the three points, and coming back from going 1-0 down. Hamilton deserve huge credit though for making things as difficult for us as possible and fighting hard to keep things at 1-1.
The match completely changed though when Hamilton (rightfully) went down to 10-men, after Griffiths was pulled down on the edge of the box - and what a free kick and resultant goal from Edouard! He really showed his class today, with some lovely close-control and positional awareness. This guy has what it takes to become a world-class striker and will go onto do big things in one of the top leagues, as he has all the necessary tools.
However, he should've had a hat-trick, as he missed an absolute sitter in the second half, but showed great unselfishness to slide the ball through to Forrest for the forth goal. Griffiths also played well and showed some neat touches, winning the free kick in the first half that led to Celtic's equaliser, although he's still not at 100%. That'll come though in the coming weeks. He was however lucky not to get a red card for a clear stamp on a Hamilton player, after reacting badly to his tackle.
Lennon's second-half substitutions were pivotal, bringing on Christie and Rogic, the latter who set up Edouard for his second, and in the end were what won Celtic the match, once Hamilton had tired and they had the chance to exploit the space that was created, and could've gone on to win by five or six. Still, it was a very important three points, which I can't help but feel could be crucial in this tense title race.
Downsides?
Jullien, as much of a class act as he is (or can be) showed once again though how he can be bullied and out-jumped by a more physical and stronger striking opponent, and today the (I have to say) outstanding Ogkmpoe, who seems to be somewhat of a thorn in Celtic's side, was that opponent. So just as Jullien was at fault at Celtic Park for Katic's towering winning header, he was once again at fault today for allowing Ogkmpoe to bully him and win their physical battle, so for me that's a side of his game that still has to improve.
However, I believe it will, as he becomes more used to the highly physical nature of Scottish football, and we'll see that aspect of his game improve accordingly. There's no doubt whatsoever though that he's a big-game player and winner, as you could see how pissed off with himself he was when his mistake led to Hamilton taking the lead, and that winning/big-game player mentality shone through when he scored Celtic's crucial second goal.
Jullien has his critics, and I understand why, but for me this guy is the real deal, as the truly top central defenders, such as van Dijk, score goals and are a threat in the opposition's box [Jullien now has 7 for the season in all competitions, including the winning goal in the cup final, which is a superb return for a defender], as well as being top-class defenders in their own box, and in that respect we'll see the best of Jullien next season.
I'll comment on the Rangers/Aberdeen game later:cool:

Lennon's second-half substitutions were pivotal, bringing on Christie and Rogic, the latter who set up Edouard for his second, and in the end were what won Celtic the match, once Hamilton had tired and they had the chance to exploit the space that was created, and could've gone on to win by five or six. Still, it was a very important three points, which I can't help be feel could be crucial in this tense title race.
I'll comment on the Rangers/Aberdeen game later:cool:
Marco.
Thought Hamilton did well especially after going down to 10 men, with Celtic eventually getting the goals that their pressure deserved, although it might have been totally different if Griffiths had been sent off for the stamp.
Definitely, Robin. You wonder what would've happened had it been Morelos?:hmm:
Griffo needs to temper his petulant side (retaliation like that and tape throwing, etc), otherwise he could find himself out of the team, as Lennon's big on discipline and risking losing players through suspension.
Still, it was a vital three points, and onto now what will be another difficult away game on Wednesday at Motherwell!

No doubt about it, if that was Morelos it would have been red.
Any thoughts on that, Granty, and on both games in general?:)
The other little 'titbit' I discovered is that the four goals Celtic scored has taken them to the top of the European scoring charts. No team in Europe has scored more goals...
Plus, in terms of the EPL, with Man City losing 2-0 away to Spurs, any faint flicker of hope of them winning the title has finally been extinguished, as they're now 22 points behind Liverpool, with both teams having played the same amount of games.
For me, it's now about how much of a record Liverpool can set in terms of the points total with which they will eventually win the title. All in all then, a good day's results!
Marco.
P.S I'm actually going to tip Leicester to finish second!
Sorry, I never followed either game.
Will try and have a look later.
I said earlier Imo, the league is staying at East Side.
Here are highlights of the Celtic one then, if you want to watch some decent football: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51343440

Marco.
Any views on tonight's games, chaps?:)
On paper, Celtic have the tougher task away at Motherwell. No guarantee of three points there... And Hibs I'm sure will give you a good game at Ibrox, however by the end of the evening I'm predicting a resounding Rangers win [as I'm certain that the team will be fired up and respond well to all the criticism they've received], and the title race still on!
Marco.
expect celtic to win.. rangers, well depends if we turn up... no confidence to predict a win alas. would like to see hagi on from start

A few changes to the Rangers team tonight, hoping for the best.
Team looks better balanced. I would have had Jones on for Kent personally but hey ho.
Good to see big eddy in for katic who has been a bomb scare of late. Tav back too

Not going too well at Ibrox, and to quote my son who’s watching, we’re pish. Hope the second half is better
1-1 I hear. Big George to rescue. Kent needs to be rested as does Kamara. I would have had Jones and Polster in mid.
But what do I know [emoji41]
Strong 2nd and a good strike from an impressive Hagi.
Easy win as expected for Celts.
As you were [emoji41]
Yup, but did either of you watch the Rangers game? If so, how was the performance? Sounds like you largely struggled again, but this time did enough to win. Getting the three points though, was all important. In the end, Hagi was the difference, which for you was the good news, and as I've said, I predict him to be a big success.
However, still no goals again from Morelos... Has he gone off the boil a bit and allowing off-field crap to affect his performances?
I watched the Celtic game, and Motherwell were superb in the first half. Although we had most of the possession and were 1-0 up, they were unlucky not to have scored. Second half it was a different ball game [literally], and as usual is the case against most of our opponents in the SPL, they tire after having tried to press us and defend with their lives for 60/70 mins or so, which then opens up space for our creative players to cause havoc and put the game to bed, which is what happened.
The goal difference between us and you now is 12, so that's like having an extra point, and the way that the team are playing at the moment, and with key players coming back such as Christie and Elyounoussi, and Griffiths and Edouard starting to click and form a potentially lethal partnership, I can see us breaking the SPL scoring record this season, whether we win the title or not.
Edouard just gets better and better, and almost certainly has the potential to become a world-class striker. The free-kicks he's scoring now are just sensational (see below). Right now, he would get into the first team of almost any side in the EPL and do a great job, as this boy has it all, and when he leaves Celtic I predict that he will break the existing SPL transfer fee record, currently set by Dembele.
https://youtu.be/eOslUscKKok
Fast forward to 3:36 to see Edouard's stunning free kick [honestly, it's worth watching]!
Marco.
aye big eddi is on fire... didnt see game but told that 1st half we were pish, and second were excellent. another master goalkeeper performance and a master referee performance nearly cost us.. ref was visibly disappointed when we scored;)
Lol... Changed times then, eh? Must be more catholics now coming through the ranks of the Scottish Referee Association!;)
So what about Morelos - is his head being too distracted by off-field crap?:)
Marco.
:popcorn::popcorn:
Marco.
No idea. He played fairly well AFAIK. Keeper had a good game, something that seems to happen a lot.
I see Aberdeen did the usual.. Play out of skins v us then don't turn up next game. Lol
As for your first point, I will pretend you didn't mean that.
Course not, hence the smiley!:D
In terms of Aberdeen, however, I think it's mostly in your head, as McInnes isn't the type of manager to put his team out not to try against anyone.
Yes, they raise their game against Rangers, but so do all other teams against both sides of the old firm, as a) they like to test themselves against the best players in the country, and b) the pressure's off, as they see it as a 'free hit' because they're not expected to get anything from the game.
It's not surprising, therefore, that the attitudes of Aberdeen players or those of any other team outside of the old firm, change when playing lesser opposition, as it's harder to get yourself up for the game. Celtic face the exact same thing, in terms of teams raising their game against them, perhaps even more because everyone wants to beat the champions!
As for Morelos, for me his head's not in the right place since he's returned from his recent suspension, and there was all that stuff about the translation of his interview on Sky Sports about racist remarks aimed at him. To me, he just doesn't seem fully focussed at the moment, but I'll probably be proven wrong and he'll end up scoring a hat-trick against Hamilton!:D

Only seen the brief highlights of both games, Celtic are playing really just now, and I think Morelos will be fine (hopefully). As for referees no comment no consistency but that also the case down south.
Good 4-1 cup win today, lads, against Hamilton... That should see you nicely back on track!:)
Marco.
just in.. forgot about it tbh.. better than i hoped for i guess. popped out to tesco for a few extras and got back just as the weather is breaking badly.. wind is brutally cold ... Spent my Tesco token that popped through post on a litre of Tamnavulin Sherry cask :eyebrows: cost me £4...lol it'll be youngish but it had a 45 quid original price, reduced to 30 and I had 26 of vouchers
Decent 3-0 win away in the cup, with a second-string side against Clyde. Good goal from Bayo, which will hopefully give his confidence a boost. I'd like to see more of this boy, as I think he's class. Shved also got a run out, and again this guy looks like a real player. Just needs more games!:)
So the draw for the next round (last eight) sees us playing St Johnstone away, and you guys away at Hearts:cool:
Marco.
No comment on the footy last night, chaps?;)
Marco.
told ya, im out... Fed up with the shit tbh.. It was not unexpected from where i sit. Your side is playing very well and deserve their lead and next title. It was over a couple of games ago tho.
wouldnt surprise me if SG leaves at end of season. he wont be sacked tho

the 2 bits are unrelated.. the shit is the press hounding and refs and sfa too... dont get me wrong its not all that but you saw it again last night with killy players getting away with stuff and poor calls etc. it happens every game now.
as to not unexpected; that was the result and performance. Players left parkhead thinking they had won something other than a game and have just farted about while your guys dusted themselves down and came again.
Gerrard, is a novice I know but his decision making with a side with players that are not at his level is not great..
overall its a crap scenario and not oneim interested in until the playing field is level . the refs, i think you have to admit have been at very least(and this is being kind) poor... well biased would be a better word.
I bet if what we had to put up with happened to your side there would be an outcry but the press are only interested in kicking rangers.
interesting from afar but as i say, im out. and thats not to take anything away from Celtic who have got their deserts by playing well. we havent

Bottom line Celtic have been playing well since the winter break and Rangers haven’t. As Grant has said Gerrard is still learning but he has plenty of staff, too many errors.
Thanks for your thoughts, guys. I'll comment properly later, particularly on what Grant's written.
I think it's important to discuss your team's performances [and drill down into the details] when things *aren't* going well, as much as when they are. I get the feeling sometimes on this thread that everyone runs for the hills and hides when their team loses or aren't doing well [where has Chris been for example, discussing Man City...?]
Nowhere to be seen, just because Liverpool are running away with the title... For me, that's not being a true fan. There's still plenty to discuss. Sorry, Chris, but it needed saying! You're the OP of this thread too, so I'd have hoped to have seen more from you...
On a side note, until I comment further, does Neil Lennon deserve some praise now for the way Celtic have been playing and the results they've achieved, especially in terms of changing the system now to 3-5-2, and playing Griffiths and Edouard up front? If you remember, I said from day one that Lennon was the ideal man for the job, and I'm being proven right (not that the season is over yet, though). Brendan Rodgers, who?:D
Robin, has your (misguided) Celtic supporting/anti-Lennon neighbour seen the light yet?;)
Marco.
Guess it's if celtic fans are happy with him..
They weren't after the old firm game. Lol.
It's always same, your as bad as your last defeat
Guess it's if celtic fans are happy with him..
They weren't after the old firm game. Lol.
It's always same, your as bad as your last defeat
Not me! I have the brains to look at the bigger picture;)
Also, if I recall correctly mate, you were critical of Lennon when he was appointed, considered him as a 'downgrade' on Rodgers, and believed that his appointment would be to Rangers advantage. Has that panned out then so far? You can't escape the facts:
Celtic are playing the best football since BR's first season in charge; arguably better, and running over the top of teams, scoring a barrowload of goals in the process. Lennon has won every available trophy since BR's departure and is now on the way to winning us 9 in a row [although I don't believe that the title race is over yet], and also Celtic won their Europa League group with a game to spare, and in the process defeating a highly regarded team from Serie A, home and away - something BR never achieved.
Therefore, only the most blinkered and misguided person could possibly not acknowledge that Celtic's appointment of Lennon has, so far, been a huge success - and *if* at the end of the season Celtic have won another treble, even a double, then I'd like his critics here to be willing to stand up and wear some egg on their coupons!!:ner:
Marco.
I think I said I could see why they went for him, but he is a downgrade on Rogers, no doubt about it.
I don't see what's wrong with that opinion.
Tbh Rogers wasn't supported as well as he could have been considering where celtic were.
As I say celtic have done well since the break and are at top and clear because they did and rangers didn't. Most of that tho is the players themselves on both sides.
You take the pats on back, then accept the kick in pants to... And vis a vie.
Much has been said re Gérards lack of plan b, but you really shouldn't need a plan b ve hearts, Killy etc. Our players are much better, but are not performing. Why, I've no idea tbh.
Answer that and the team could be playing well again.
1. They are pissed with manager.
Or 2. They are lazy conceited bassas
I think I said I could see why they went for him, but he is a downgrade on Rogers, no doubt about it.
No doubt how?
Purely as a *Celtic manager*, not in terms of a manager in general, show me the evidence, in terms of results, that confirms that Lennon is a downgrade on Rodgers - and I'd like to see some indisputable statistics in black and white, which confirm your view, not simply a statement of your subjective opinion.
Ta. I'll get to the rest later:)
Marco.
Ah I didn't say "celtic manager" I said manager.
Indeed, and that's the whole point, mate.
I'm talking *purely* about him as a Celtic manager. When BR left Celtic and Lennon got the job, I said at the time that he was the best man for the job, and for getting us to 10-in-a-row, and I distinctly remember both you and Robin, but particularly Robin, saying that he was a downgrade on Rodgers (as a Celtic manager), and that Lennon's appointment would be a boost to Rangers.
Do you remember that? If so, can we now agree that *purely as a Celtic manager*, Lennon has most certainly NOT been a downgrade? Indeed, arguably, backed by very good evidence, in terms of his results, he could be considered as an UPGRADE.
Marco.
Don't think I can agree he's been an upgrade. Last season he didn't have to do much but what he did was enough.
This season was initially up and down, although did well in Europe. He's turned corner well tho now, but as I said he has been given a lot of money by Scottish standards, plus he was handed a lot of very good players too.
I've nowt against him and he is a good manager, although perhaps a bit too old school.
As I've said before, as much as 10 fascinates you and many others it means nowt to me, and u know why.
So can we end this, let's all say Marco was right stuff[emoji23]

Lol... That's not what this is about. It's about acknowledging the facts, and not allowing your biases to cloud reality, and btw, let me be clear, I'm not saying that you are doing that. One of my pet hates though, are folk who dislike someone (for whatever reason) stubbornly refusing to acknowledge/give credit to that person for the successes they've achieved, simply because they 'don't like them', and that's it.
It's irrational and stupid behaviour, and it annoys me in the extreme.
However, going back to what you were saying earlier about referees and the SFA... If the anti-Rangers bias you're stating is correct (and there's no real way of proving that), then all I can say is that something drastic must've happened inside the SFA and refereeing associations since the the 90s and before, as back then they were mostly all biased against Celtic, and so as many instances as you can cite happening now of Rangers suffering because of bias, I could give you far more that Celtic have suffered in the past, trust me!
So for me it's swings and roundabouts. I don't condone any such bias though, should it exist, and I also think much of the poor refereeing decisions Rangers (and many other teams) have suffered from this season, has been due to incompetence, rather than anything underhand. We really need to do something to improve the standard of refereeing in this country, as iquite frankly, it's atrocious.
In terms of your "I'm out" comment earlier, you're of course entitled to do what you like, but IMHO you shouldn't be giving up on your team and/or no longer posting here about this season, simply because of a few bad results or refereeing decisions.
Tell me the truth, if I hadn't prompted your comments, would Robin and you have swept last night's league results under the carpet, and then simply reappeared after the next Rangers win?;)
Remember, I was the first on here to congratulate you guys when Rangers beat us at home, before the winter break, and whenever Celtic lose or play badly, I'm on here analysing the reasons for that and criticising the players and/or manager, and as I say, 'drilling down into the details' of it all. I'd like to see a bit more of that from others here, rather than stroppy comments such as "I'm out", or only surfacing when something good happens.
I'm just being honest and saying what I think, so please don't take it the wrong way:)
Marco.
I've said before I was finished with Scottish football. It's corrupt.
Couldn't care less if rangers go on and win league or not fit that matter. I won't be ascociating myself with cheating, and never have.
This has nothing to do with rangers poor form. That's kinda expected yet, as they are young side and all fairly inexperienced. 2/3 years ago they had a Sunday league squad.
I followed rangers due to Mr struth guiding attitudes of honest endeavour.
Oh and I've seen you avoid this thread one several occasions after bad results so don't cast [emoji23]
Lol - not at all. I might've been busy elsewhere or forgotten to comment, but I can assure you I've never deliberately avoided this thread when Celtic have lost - and besides, there haven't been many bad results this season for me to avoid commenting about!:D;)
Actually, I'm tipping Aberdeen to take a point off us (or possibly more) on Sunday, so there you go!:ner:
Marco.
I've said before I was finished with Scottish football. It's corrupt.
I agree... But the WORLD is corrupt, so why wouldn't football be, and not just Scottish? Corruption is rife all over, mate. So unfortunately, there's no such thing as fairness, and honesty is also rather thin on the ground.
But I'm sorry, I don't buy Rangers being a victim of bias now more than any other team in Scotland, especially Celtic, as back in the day they had to contend with more than their fair share of anti-Celtic bias, from both the SFA and referees.
Marco.

Marco, my neighbour is happy that Celtic are winning and currently in a very strong position in the league, however he has not changed his opinion of Lennon. He feels that Celtic are a big club who play in front of 60,000 fans every other week and deserve a big name manager, which Neil Lennon is not.
rmcin626
14-02-2020, 08:13
At the moment Celtic are playing better than Rangers that’s the simple fact, they have changed formation to 3,5,2 while Rangers kept with 4,3,3 formation. However Rangers have the 2 wide players continual coming inside which will only works if the full backs are moving into the wide positions and providing crosses into the box, but this has not been happening consistently since the winter break, and Gerrard does not have a plan B.
A few decisions have gone against us but they normally even out over a season, personally not concerned about any bias against us. Although there was nothing wrong with goal scored by Morelos on Wednesday night, bottom line Kilmarnock had 2 chances and scored twice, Rangers had several chances but only 1 goal scored.
I have not watch the Celtic game from Wednesday other than the goals , so can’t comment on how they played.
One thing that does annoy me, and it happened again on Wednesday night, when Kilmarnock scored their second goal and the celebrations by their Manager and staff, you’d have thought they had just won the League.
Marco, my neighbour is happy that Celtic are winning and currently in a very strong position in the league, however he has not changed his opinion of Lennon. He feels that Celtic are a big club who play in front of 60,000 fans every other week and deserve a big name manager, which Neil Lennon is not.
But would a "big name" manager have achieved any more success since taking over from Rodgers than Lennon has?
Highly unlikely, as aside from a couple of defeats this season, there's little to improve on - certainly not in Europe. Plus, he's won every available trophy so far. Rangers signed a "big name" in Gerrard, and look how that's panning out so far, although I do think he'll get it right, but his time is fast running out. If Rangers don't win the league this season, I don't think he'll be trusted to stop us going for ten.
As I said when Lennon was appointed, this is ALL about securing 10-in-a-row, so we needed someone steeped in the Celtic tradition, who *knows* exactly what that means to the fans, and who's been there, done that and worn the t-shirt, to try and deliver it. Therefore, no-one whom Celtic could've afforded, and would've come to the SPL, would've been better equipped for that task.
The "big name" manager will come after Lennon leaves, hopefully after having succeeded in achieving his goals, and to move us onto the next level in the Champions League. If your neighbour can't see that, then I'm afraid he's rather blinkered.
I'll get to your other (excellent) post later, as that's exactly the sort of thing I'd like to see more of!
Marco.
Great interview here from Gerrard, talking about what's going wrong now at Rangers [it's a must read]: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51506367
I've always liked Gerrard, as I admire his honesty and winning mentality. He's a genuine guy who deserves to do well - and he will, whether it's as manager of Rangers or some other club.
Views, guys?:)
Marco.
And what about this on Man City: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51506367
:eek::eek:
Marco.
If anyone thinks this decision was about fair play, then they are mistaken. If it was, do you really think that United would be allowed to be 700m in debt, with the purchase of the club made with a loan against its value? Do you really think that Liverpool would be allowed to use 50m investment in a stadium that never happened as mitigation to avoid FFP failure? Real Madrid and Barcelona have both been tried and convicted of receiving illegal state funding too and City will take this all the way. It is already going to CAS and it will go beyond that as there is no legal basis for this distorted view of fairness.
For more and a very strongly worded statement, have a look here:
https://www.mancity.com/news/club-news/club-news/2020/february/manchester-city-club-statement
I heard the results of the case before it was even tried, as uefa said they were guilty before it was even looked at in the kangaroo court.
Not sure how your supposed to get a fair hearing that way. Not saying they are innocent of course as i dont know all facts, but when you look are the madrids/barcas of this world who have been basically state aided for years, and man u who were bought on debt to club yet continue to spend, you do have to ask, who is pulling the strings.
Man Utd's brand is global and has been for many years. Their revenue income is only surpassed by Real Madrid & Barcelona. Even the financially doped clubs like Paris St Germain & Man City can't match Man Utd's revenue income. The Glaziers use Utd as a cash cow, and reinvest little if any of their own money into the club.

FFP was allegedly designed to protect clubs against dodgy owners
Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Debt has come down but at expense of the football side, which of course has affected share prices. Although it has dropped dramatically it increased a bit this year, certainly not due to football reasons tho lol. Maybe it dropped too low and became attractive again
The allegation, if proven, against Man City is over statement of asset values and income revenues to balance the books. There is plenty of conjecture surrounding FFP in general and UEFA's motives for applying it. I guess people will form their own view. Quite how Paris St Germain got away with seemingly very clear FFP breaches is another story of smoke and mirrors.
I agree, the debt loaded onto Man Utd when purchased by the Glazer family wasn't in the best interests of the club. My point was more so, the revenue income Man Utd are still able to attain, despite less success on the football pitch in recent years. :)
I think the issues with clubs being given external finances has always been with us, and lets face it, its really the only way the current top clubs stay there, by arranging this penalty to stop others joining their club. City could never have got where they are without it, and that applies to PSG too.
But Madrid, Barca etc have had it in past and are now very strong. they dont want others doing better.
Its a difficult one tbh. is it wrong for someone to push their cash in; maybe... but there again its a professional sport, and the side effects to the communities can be great...
One thing for sure, Uefa/Fifa calling anyone cheats is a laugh.
I agree Grant. The game has changed so much since Jack Walker's romanticised bankrolling of Blackburn. Was that any different to the state sponsorship of the likes of Man City & PSG? People will have differing views.
You're dead right, FIFA & UEFA, are in no position to take the moral high ground.
Anyway, my affiliation is to Spurs, a seemingly financially well run club, who just don't happen to win anything! :)

Marco.
yeah saw the interview, we'll see what happens this week, if the players can get back to where they were before the break, a couple of big games that must be won.
saw it earlier.. its pretty much the usual from him.. its what he sees and feels. whether he is right or right to say it, well thats not for me to judge.
Personally i think the players let him and fans down big time.
Whilst I appreciate Gerrard's candidness and honesty, do you guys worry that criticising the players like that *in public*, even though they deserve it, might be proving counterproductive and creating divisions in the dressing room?
Marco.
maybe will but if it does it does. they deserve to be called out. as he has been. they get well paid to be on the ball every game..thats the job with a club like rangers.
i know he will just leave if they piss him about and get shirty.
Yup, he doesn't exactly need the money, and wouldn't be short of offers elsewhere!
For me, aside from signs of obvious managerial naivety, his mistake is in expecting his players to be too much like him, both in terms of football ability and winning mentality. It's a tall order to expect to have a team full of 'Gerrards'...
I defo do think there's currently unhappiness/disharmony in the dressing room. as the players simply aren't playing with smiles on their faces. That's affecting their mental attitude, and in turn their performance on the pitch. They also aren't handling the pressure well of having to win every game. And until that changes, results won't pick up.
Marco.
i did hear it was re goldson, but who knows
Just as aside, good luck to Alex (and his Norwich team) against Liverpool tonight. You never know - look what happened to Man City!;)
The pressure's also completely off, as nothing will be expected of you, and so have a 'free hit'. You should play this game like a cup tie and take the game to Liverpool, play without fear and get right in their faces., as you've got nothing to lose. If he's fit, I predict Pukki to score...
Marco.
norwich need a miracle now tbh, but they happen occasionally. probably not today tho.
I still believe in miracles, but suspect the Canaries will fall from the Premier perch, winning them the dubious honour of most relegated PremierLeague team ever (5 times.). But where there’s life, there’s hope!

Only 1-0 down so far in the 83rd minute, mate. My gut told me that this one was going to be tight...;)

:yay::yay::yay:
What a MASSIVE 3 points that was!! Squeaky-bum time watching it, though... Playing shite in very windy conditions, and with Aberdeen by far the better team over the 90 mins, but we still managed to dig out a result:clap::clap:
Now over to the Gers to pump Livvy and keep the title race on....

Thought Aberdeen deserved something out the game, not a great game but the conditions were not great.
I agree about Aberdeen, no question. Indeed I predicted as much... From earlier:
Actually, I'm tipping Aberdeen to take a point off us (or possibly more) on Sunday, so there you go!:ner:
I was (worrying) nearly right!
I *knew* it would be a very tight game, as Aberdeen would've been right up for it, and looking for revenge, after last time at Pittodrie us thrashing them 4-0 at HALF time, and then having a holiday in the second half... But, true champions [much like Liverpool did yesterday] always find a way of winning, even when they aren't playing well!
That's the key difference, for me, at the moment between Rangers and Celtic. Rangers have still to find the winning mentality and strength of character that wins you titles:)
Plus, Lenny also deserves credit again for changing the system today, to suit the needs of the game, when things weren't working, and using his subs well. Who needs a "big name" manager? Lenny is DA MAN:ner:;)

Marco.
We’ll see
Yup... It'll be down to how well Gerrard has managed to rally his players and get a response from them, which I think he'll get, hence my prediction. Look out for Hagi to make a big impact! The players owe the manager a good performance, and I think they'll deliver it.
However, for me, anything less than 3 points today and they can defo kiss bye-bye to the title.

1-0 not a great performance but at least it’s a win, goal was well taken we should scored another couple and Livy were unlucky, hit the post.
Yup, much tighter than I thought it'd be... I keep waiting for a 'reaction' from the Rangers players to their current poor spell of form, and a performance that warrants them still being considered as genuine title contenders (on paper aside), and which results in them putting teams properly to bed, but post-Dubai it simply hasn't materialised.
And that's what has been the basis of my predictions, including the one I gave earlier. Arfield and McGregor are carrying you at the moment, and today you managed to grind out a win. However, where's Morelos? Where's Kent? What's happened to Tavernier since he's come back from injury - more importantly, where are the goals going to come from in future games to keep your title hopes alive...?
It's all a big struggle at the moment and distinctly unimpressive... You'll certainly need to be MUCH better against Braga, on Thursday night. If I was a Rangers supporter, in the form my team was in, I'd be worried about that one and fearing a drubbing, as trust me, Braga are a very capable and dangerous outfit. However, if you get a good result in that match, it *might* just give you the spark you need to kick on in the league.
Rangers, at the moment, certainly need to find a spark from somewhere!
Marco.
Any thoughts on the European games coming up tomorrow, chaps?:)
Marco.
Celtic look to have the easier task. But you can never discount anyone in Europe now.
Other than that not really. Rangers can't, I think play any worse so may well be worth a bet. Their best form has been in the bigger games.
Good luck tonight, lads, against Braga. Again, it's one of the few times that I temporarily become a Rangers fan! Let's hope that both our teams can get a positive result:)
Also, good luck to all other British teams playing tonight in Europe!

Yeah, I'll comment on that later, Robin, after the Rangers game. 2-0 down now, and no Morelos for the second leg. It's not looking good. I knew that this would be a very hard game for Rangers, especially with their recent poor form.
Marco.
BIG goal from Hagi..!! And a superb one at that. He's defo a player, this boy. But Morelos needs to find his scoring boots and help Rangers get something out this game [and tie], while he still can, if they've got any chance at all of progressing in the competition.
Marco.
Not fussed with footy at moment tbh. I keep an eye on the futures market ie Young up and comings around globe but not much interested in games tbh. Can't muster any enthusiasm even when doing well.
Comes with age I guess. Seen it all before
Shame... I could *never* feel that way about Celtic!
You weren't like that at the beginning of the season though, and rather more enthusiastic. So something must've happened to change your attitude,

Marco.Hagi is a decent player. Alf is already off mentally and needs sold.
Something has gone down with the team. Dunno what but they are a shadow of what they were. No desire, no real fight. It's a sign the team are all unhappy with something, or someone

I am hearing its 2-2 now
It's been a feature of braga at times thus season. Collapsing after being in a winning position.
Gerrard for once, went for it and got a bit of a response.
How they got out winning, well that's football I guess.
3-2 it finishes according to the flashed score.
Keeps the tie alive and gives more points for the future standings

Not sure how we won that game as we were shite for 70 minutes.
Getting Kamara off should have happened in first half. He is currently brutal.
2 solo goals from skilled players and a wild deflection doesn't make it anything to write home about but, and it's a big one.. Everyone at Ibrox will remember it for a long time, and it might just spur the players on a bit for rest of season.
2 champs league places will be assured now I think.

We were outplayed for most of the game and then the changes were made, probably for the first time the Manager went for it, time will tell.
Talking of youths, I see we have had a great signing in Malcolm Ebiowei, ex Arsenal wonderkid, 16, has signed with rangers. A number of prem teams were after him and plays for Nigeria as well. He was playing with the U18's at Arsenal. He was out of contract.
This is the way a club like ours can have a future. Young exciting players with potential and hence value.
Yup Scotland have moved above the chechs and Cyprus so should have 2 champs league places

Strange night, thought Celtic played well especially in the first half. As for Rangers they were rubbish for about 70 minutes and lucky to be only 2 down, very similar to a game against Marseille a few decades ago totally outplayed for 3/4 of the game but somehow managed to win. That said 2 good goals and one lucky one, hopefully that will change things because we have been very poor since the winter break.
I thought Aribo's goal was fantastic, but he needs to produce that more, especially in league games. Hagi is defo a talented player, and no doubt was keen to impress his dad in the stand, and although he's still only 21 and settling into Scottish football, he needs to show more of those skills in league games and not 'disappear' when things get physical against the 'diddy teams'... But if coached properly, and with a bit of luck, he's destined for great things.
I also thought Kamberi looked good, for the short time he was on in the second half, and could give Rangers a different dimension up front. For me, it's either time to drop Morelos, as his not at it just now, mentally, or, and I personally I would go with this, play two up front (like Celtic have been doing), with him and Morelos, and which might take some of the pressure off of Morelos and help him get back to the form he showed before his injury. I also think there's potentially a good partnership there.
However, having watched some of their games in the group stages,I knew that Braga would be a very dangerous team, and going forward they're better than Porto, but with the very high defensive line they adopt, you'll always get chances against them, particularly if you've got pace in your team, although their goalkeeper is very, very good! It's all set to be a very entertaining night next week in Portugal.
Braga will almost certainly score over there, I feel certain about that, but if Rangers can score an away goal (at least one), I think think they'll go through, but it'll be a topsy-turvy night, full of twists and turns, and for me, whoever scores the first goal will go onto win the game and the tie. Hopefully now, from a Rangers point of view, they'll use the win last night, and euphoria of such an amazing comeback to spur them on in the league. TBH, if that comeback doesn't provide Rangers with the spark that they've been missing, nothing will!
Celtic were fantastic last night in the first half, and pretty much blew Copenhagen away. They missed numerous chances in the first half to put the tie to bed, and could've easily gone in at half time 3-0 up. I think Copenhagen were taken aback by Celtic's attacking intent, and high-press, in an away European fixture and had been expecting Celtic to be more defensive, but that's what I like now away in Europe since Neil Lennon's taken over, as we now look like we can win or at least get a point in those games, whereas under Rodgers that almost never happened... Take note Lenny detractors!;)
However, in the second half it was a different ball game (literally), and after a tactical switch and a boot up the arse from their manager, Copenhagen came out and played like a totally different team, and were much more direct and dangerous. The goal they scored though was due to Celtic's sloppy defending, so they'll need to be much tighter in the return leg if they're to avoid losing an away goal.
The penalty was definitely a penalty. No way did Christie deliberately handle the ball, he was just too close to get out the way, but his arm was certainly in an 'unnatural position', so I knew how the VAR decision would go. What a save though from Forster, and that could be the difference to us progressing or not. I think we'll have to score 2 goals minimum to go through, and with home advantage I'd expect us to do that, but it won't be an easy game.
I would be great to see both Rangers and Celtic go through to the last 16, and if both play to their potential and defend resolutely, then I think there's a good a chance of it happening!

Someone has a couple of decent games and we give them a big contract, all very strange.
The back four were hopeless, the Manager needs to be braver with the team selections and substitutions.
Since the winter break we have played well for about 23 minutes.
So, do you think the title's over now, even if you win both the remaining old firm games?
Kamberi's goal was excellent.

Yes I though both goals we scored today were decent. Yes the league has gone even if we beat Celtic twice which might happen. I don’t do the walking away but it’s not an easy watch at the moment.
I'm still not counting chickens...
But even if you beat us twice (which, yes, could happen, although Celtic losing two games in a row against Rangers hasn't occurred for a very long time), and even if you also win your game in hand, against the same opposition you dropped two points against today, we'd still be three points ahead [with a much superior GD], and of course you'd have to win EVERY game up until the match at Ibrox, in order maintain that points difference...
On our current form, and yours, that seems unlikely, but you never know in football. That remarkable comeback win over Braga should've spurred on your team for today's game, but for me it seems that too many Rangers players have lost heart and, in their heads have given up on the title. They're skilful, no doubt, but not enough have the mental strength and belief to win a title, which for me is the biggest difference just now between the two teams - that and the disparity of strength in depth of the respective squads is starting to show now, more and more.
On top of that, having Morelos off the boil just now and Defoe injured, combined with not enough of your other players taking up the slack, in terms of scoring goals, has been the catalyst for your current slump. However, I also think that Gerrard has to take his share of the blame, as many of his signings have been expensive flops, and (so far) I include Kent in that. £7m? No chance. Ojo? Remind me who he is again... Plus, Davis hasn't influenced games enough in the way he should have, and with Helander out, your defence has been suspect. Goldson also isn't anywhere near Rangers class. A mere pretender.
Here's the thing however... For me, Rangers will NOT move forward and get to where they want to be, in terms of winning the title, not just beating Celtic in head-to-head encounters, until they can match or better Celtic's spending power, as quite simply, that's why our squad has better players and can cope better with injuries and suspensions, without the team dropping points. It was exactly the same, although the roles were reversed, when Rangers won nine-in-row.
So...... IMO, in order to level the playing field in that respect, Rangers need to find an investor (or investors) who are able to inject, say, £50m into the club, and that money needs to be spent WISELY, solely on players who are genuine Rangers class and have a ruthless winning mentality, such as McGregor, who for me, along with Tavernier and Morelos, are the only three players you've got who *truly* deserve to wear a Rangers shirt, and know what that means and can handle the pressure.
But, and it's a big BUT, if Celtic go onto win the title this season, and even if Rangers win the Scottish Cup, and such an investor (or investors) later materialise, would the board *trust* Gerrard to spend that money wisely...? And if not, do they then risk going for another manager, to build again from scratch, with only one season to prevent Celtic from winning 10-in-a-row?:hmm:
Your thoughts please, gentlemen:cool:
Marco.
League, was gone after hearts tbh and I said so.
Celtic have learned their lesson and came back swinging. We sat down and got pissed
Where do Rangers go from here though, Grant, presuming, say, that they only win the Scottish cup this season, or perhaps nowt? Do you agree that, realistically, as I've outlined, they won't catch Celtic until they can match them financially?
For me, that's the root of the problem, just as it was for Celtic in the 90s, when Rangers dominated...So until that happens, Rangers are really just pissing in the wind. Usurping Celtic simply can't be done 'on the cheap'.
Marco.

regroup.. and adjust the group.. they are not that far off in many ways, just strength in depth really. they need a few more players yet and a few to go as well if possible. Good Euro money this year will help. Management team need to get better, quickly too. They need plan B and C.. Not just stick to 433..they are not Liverpool; They dont have the same quality of player that SG himself was, and he needs to realise this.

I agree with all of that, but in terms of the key bit in bold (strength in depth), they're still a LONG way off... If Rangers and Celtic were to reach the Scottish Cup final, you couldn't realistically predict a winner, as Rangers have shown this season that they can not only equal, but better, Celtic in one-off head-to-heads.
However, right now, if things remain the same and you were to predict who was going to win the league any season in the foreseeable future, you'd have to say that Celtic would be strong favourites, not because Rangers couldn't match them for part of a season, or in one-off games, but not over the whole course of a season, simply because their squad just isn't strong enough.
So until that situation is successfully addressed, and crucially as I've mentioned before, you can rhyme off six or seven Rangers players who would walk into Celtic's first team (currently, at best, I could only think of two who'd have any chance), as it was during the Smith and Advocaat eras, things will not change, and Rangers will not get to where they need to be.
As I said, you cannot usurp Celtic 'on the cheap' [i.e. what you've spent so far], as significant for Rangers as that's been, so for me, aside from the correct observations you've made above, *major* financial investment, far in excess of that generated by a run in the Europa league (as in the meantime Celtic won't be standing still, especially whilst pocketing CL money), will be needed to give Rangers a realistic chance of winning titles again.
That's how I see it.
Marco.
up to a point yes, but money doesnt always win out. often does of course, but until rangers find a way to beat the high block consistently it is going to be this way. Man u have spent a fair whack in last few years and are still shoite, so its as much what you do with what you have..ie sheff utd and leicester, although city did spend a fair amount, its not as much as others so far..

The expectations went through the roof as usual after the Celtic game, however back in the real world, it’s clear we don’t have the strength in depth.
If Gerrard has any sense he should give Walter a call and ask how to win in Europe.
As for the financial side of things I don’t see any big changes any time soon.

No, but money well spent (on good players) does! Coupled of course, as you say, by having a talented and experienced manager. Quite simply, that's why Liverpool and Celtic are currently clear at the top of their respective leagues and brushing the opposition aside.
Marco.

But Gerrard's record with Rangers in Europe has been superb, and without doubt his biggest success, so I'm not sure where you're coming from there?
Would you agree though that, aside from the financial situation, Rangers have appointed too many inexperienced and untested managers in recent years, instead of going for someone experienced and who knows Scottish football inside out (like a Walter Smith) and that that has been a significant contributory factor in them failing to halt Celtic's dominance?
For me, if, say, Steve Clarke, or someone of his ilk, had been offered (and had accepted) the Rangers job, instead of Gerrard, Rangers would be much closer than they are now to challenging Celtic.

He was offered it informally but being from a celtic family didn't want it. Don't think tbh he would take celtic one either tho.

You correct that his record has been fine so far in Europe this season, Walter Smith took the team to a final playing some of the dullest football. If we play the same as yesterday or the first 65 minutes on Thursday night we could be up for a bit of a hiding.
There is no way Steve Clarke would have gone to Rangers, but Gerrard will attract players that other managers wouldn’t.

As the game progressed I thought we would score at least once although have to admit was a bit concerned with the missed chances, they stuck to the game plan, but you could see the lack of experience at this level up front, Kamberi who is better than I thought he would be although he needs to learn about the offside rule.
Thought Braga played much better last week, but not many teams have beaten them this season.
Of course come the weekend we’ll be shite again.

Oh well, we definitely didn't deserve to beat Copenhagen, due to (unlike us) shocking defending... Up to Rangers now to carry the Scottish flag in Europe, and good luck to them:)

Tough losing 2 quick breakaway goals, but one of the risks when chasing game.
Indeed... But we didn't deserve to win tonight, as we didn't play well enough. Four changes to the team (three enforced through injury and suspension) upset the balance of the team too much. However, it was the one suspension (Christie) we missed most!
Hey ho, just one of those nights.

Disappointing night for Celtic, thought they would win after the penalty but Copenhagen are a good side.
I see you've drawn Bayer Leverkusen, in the next round. A hard one, but not insurmountable. The good news is that the location is 'handy', and so there won't be much travelling:)
If you play as well you did against Braga, in Portugal, and show the same determination to win, as you did against the same opposition at Ibrox, but defend better, then there's no reason why you can't reach the quarter finals. I'll certainly be rooting for you!
I was hoping you'd get Man Utd or Wolves, as there's nothing to beat a good 'Battle of Britain', and the chance to get it right up the English!!:D;)
And also to show that our league is much better than they think it is.....
Marco.
Beyer are a decent side and have Haverez in side. Tame him and we might have a chance.
Still, either way it's another round, and more money etc. More exposure for players to shine and maybe attract transfers etc.
Most players are money orientated and most fancy going to a bigger club on European stage.
Surprised there's been no mention/chat about yesterday's cup exit, chaps? How can Rangers play *so superbly* in Europe, and then fall on their arses against much inferior opposition at home? :hmm:
Your thoughts on what's going on - and is that Rangers' best chance of a trophy this season now gone...?
We struggled today against St Johnstone (although I believe we battered them) and won 1-0, so that's us through to the semi-finals. That's 34 consecutive cup wins now, in all domestic competitions, which is quite remarkable.
Marco.
A mix of things I think.... SG will quit I think..

Too be honest not seen the game from yesterday was through in Grangemouth during day, and then at a Burns Supper last night. Heard Rangers were really poor, clearly there is an issue but have no idea what it is.
i slept right through. was not well and didnt miss much. another oor ref showing, not that that has so much bearing but its really poor that every ref we get seems to have a bad day.
Im told we were poor all over pitch. Tav and shags conspired to let them score but also no-one was ever on Naismith, who was creating havok... he is a dangerous player and someone should have been sitting on his shoulder for 90 mins.
I know he is disappointed but the castigation after game(again) doesnt really help matters either. If he isnt up and confident, how are the team going to be?
A mix of things I think.... SG will quit I think..
Do you think so? In the circumstances, he might've considered it, but I don't see it, as he's no quitter, and it would look bad on his CV. Plus, he could potentially win the Europa League. Why not? If Rangers continue to play like they have in the competition so far, against very good opposition, then they could definitely get to the final - and then anything could happen.
So, for that reason alone, I don't think he'll be going anywhere soon.
Marco.
Think he is just totally pissed. Whether he stays or goes will be his choice.
We won't bump him I don't think. Still think he can do it but he needs some better man management skills and he needs a scotty brown as captain to kick arses in dressing room as well
On youth note we have managed to keep Leon King(16). He signed a 2 year bumper contract that keeps him out of the English top clubs' grasp. Man u, City and Arsenal were all after him.

Where have you been...???

I wuz watching the Chelsea v Liverpool game on the telly :)
Yeah I know, but I meant in terms of this thread and the forum in general. That was your first post in months!!
Marco.
Billy Gilmour was excellent tonight :)
Wasn't he! Stuff dreams are made of, well done to the lad, and Chelsea. Must admit, Frank has surprised me, done better than I thought he would.

I don't watch many games that don't involve City, but last night's was a belter.
I'm pleased for Frank as much as anything else - his final PL season was in a City shirt, and he made a good impression during his time with us.
yup rangers fans were gutted when he left..for a measley amount lol.. still it works both ways
What do we make of tonight's results, lads? Knew it would a hard one for us at Livingston, and it turned out that way with a draw, but what about Rangers losing at Ibrox to Hamilton - what now for Gerrard?:hmm:
Marco.
Even with celtic dropping points and us at home v bottom side we still fall further behind.
A poor performance yet again. Poor tempo, first balls can't even get past first defender, and when they do the still can't put it in net.
I was surprised.. Actually I wasn't surprised tav, Goldson and McGregor kept there places and yet again all played like schoolkids.
Can only think manager hasn't got it, and players are not really interested in any of it.
Much of it imo comes from this obsession of giving out great contracts time and again to players and management that have won zero
Fantastic performance for my Canaries tonight, it took penalties but we're through to the quarter finals of the FA Cup for the first time in 28 years! After beating Leicester on Friday I'm hoping this is our resurgence, but mindful of '85 when we won the League Cup but ended up relegated... One thing's for sure, it's never boring being a Norwich City fan! ("let's be 'aving you!)

I thought you might be a happy camper, Alex :)
Yeah, I'd love Norwich to stay up:)
Marco.
Liverpool back to winning ways now too [yee-hah], with their hard-fought win today at home against Bournemouth. Only three more wins, and the title is theirs!!:yay::yay:
Marco.
That's do nicely, especially the hat-trick from Griffo! Think he (and Edouard) are warming up for Rangers next week...:eyebrows:;)
Also, the return of one of our best (and relatively unsung) players from injury today came up with a notable contribution: Hatem Abd Elhamed! Oh how we've missed this guy, especially defensively, and he'll be a big boost to the team in the crucial run-in, especially in the forthcoming cup semi-final:)
Over to Rangers tomorrow. Will they win in the highlands to keep any faint chance of their title hopes alive? Surely, they will!

Well done to Celtic again another good win, not holding out much hope for tomorrow.
I think you'll DEFO win, as you'll not want to be going into the games against Leverkusen and Celtic, on the back of a defeat...
Match prediction: Ross County 0 Rangers 3.

Usually I’m very much half glass full, but that glass needs topping up.
I can understand that. You've got a very difficult week ahead, especially if it ends up being a slog against Leverkusen. In some ways, I'm glad we'll be able to have a rest midweek, which will keep us fresh for Sunday.
Any thoughts, Granty - how confident are you of getting the three points tomorrow, and also wins (or positive results) in the following two games?:)
Marco.
As a Burnley season ticket holder thought we were very unlucky not to get a win against Spurs today but happy enough with a point.
Hi Pete,
Welcome to the footy thread, as a Burnley fan! Please feel free to discuss your teams ups and downs here:)
Marco.
No thoughts really. I'm expecting pretty much same team. Won't surprise me if rangers win handsomely but neither will them losing.
Much will depend on real mood of camp, but if it's anything like the last TV meeting then it's all over before it starts.
I think in the summer Rangers need to sign a couple of 'hard bastard' players from the English Championship, particularly in central defence and midfield, and preferably ones who are 'Rangers minded'. The team's too soft.
Find another 'two Terries'.. Butcher and Hurlock! That'll sort you out:)
Marco.
as i said another time, they need a capt like broon who boots baws on field and in dressingroom quite frankly. tav is a decent player on his game as is goldson, but neither are capt material.. not sure any bar big shags is tbh... That is where the team is let down more than anything imv
Who's Shags? Basically, you need 10 more McGregors!
As I said, scour the English Championship... It's supposed be a very tough and competitive league, so surely there must be some tough as fuck winner/leader Brentford, Preston or Millwall (or such like) type-players, with 'leanings' towards Rangers, who could bolster their squad in the way you're implying?
For me, that's the market you should be shopping in, and stop signing foreigners, who simply don't 'get' what it means to wear a Rangers shirt. Also, what I've always wondered (more so when he first arrived) is why didn't Gerrard himself pull on a Rangers jersey, like Souness did when he arrived, and adopt a player/manager role?
IMO, Gerrard was still young and fit enough to do so, and HE would've been just the player they needed to boot baws and instil the necessary winning mentality! Influencing things on the pitch is so much easier when you're ON it, rather than shouting from the sidelines.

mcgregor
Ah I see... Why is he called "Shags"?
Also, what did you think of the rest of my post?:)
Marco.
shags coz he was constantly shagging any skirt that moved .. stevie said his legs were gone so wasnt playing in serious footy. sign good players is all thats needed. if your really good player and have risen up to be that then you have to have some toughness.
getting good enough players to play for a jersey is nigh on impossible these days.
we will see if they can show some balls without getting sent off

I agree, and so what you also need to do is start bringing them through the ranks again, like we have... You need to start producing, a Tierney, McGregor, Forrest, etc... When you've got two or three of those home-grown players in your team, it makes all the difference and saves you a fortune!:)
Marco.
we have them but manager is afraid to play them tbh... they always are, and much of that is the ibrox faithful who scream abuse at anyone who makes an error.
You should support a player when he makes an error, not hound them. why i wont go now. its been like this for years, so kids get 10 mins at end and then thats it. no use... today we should have played a couple but no, same old duds

How to sum up the game so far, same shite different day. Virtually all the possession but no end product.
basically same players with same tactics so we will likely get same result. again no real energy and desire to win.. gutless mob when going gets tough
3 points, but not pretty.. dump alf into reserves for a while.. he was a waste of a jersey again

A very painful watch, but 3points
Very painful - I watched the whole 95 mins!
Still, as you say, it was three points. Morelos needs dropped and made to get fit again, plus his head sorted, as right now he's adding hee-haw to your team. I never thought you'd miss Defoe so much, but you have.
He's not too far off now though, is he? It would be good if he could play some part on Thursday night.
Marco.
P.S Looking forward to watching the Manchester derby later:)
Defoe is fit. Not match fit but fit.
Utd need to press City at right times and defend well.. [emoji23] Fat chance of either
Fear ye not, Utd have made it a league double over City... :)
Scott McTominay's cheeky strike (and fantastic finish) in the 96th minute, with City's goal gaping, after Ederson's misplaced throw out left him caught off his line, to make it 2-0, was just sublime!:D
Most importantly though, from a Liverpool point of view, we only need two more victories now to win the title... I can almost smell it:eyebrows:
A Celtic and Liverpool title double this season would be just fantastic!
Marco.
Yip utd did well. Played it to suit them. Had as many chances but took some of them.
Still in with a chance of 4th.
Yup, and a good boost for Scotland too, with the form of McTominay and Griffiths:)
Marco.
Both good form as is young lad at Chelsea.
Indeed... I just wish we were as strong defensively. That bad injury to Soutar could come back to haunt us.
Marco.
looking like the return game in germany could be in empty stadia... just hoping their players dont turn up as well:eyebrows:

That's now just been confirmed... Also, and more importantly, have you heard about this: https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/5372848/rangers-20m-investment-asian-hong-kong/
If that happens, that could be what makes the difference and gets you back to where you need to be!:)
