Cool... What's the deal then on Helander? As you say, he was a big-money signing, but doesn't seem to be getting many games, nor seems to be trusted by Gerrard in the big ones that matter (i.e. against Legia Warsaw and Celtic).

Is he injured or what?

Marco.

Think Gerrard felt the 2 with Jerseys deserved to keep them. I think the 2 on bench are better.

Think he will be getting a game after the international break, after the performances on Sunday.

That doesn't say much for then for what was supposed to be one of your big signings... More wasted money? Hopefully not.

I think the plan was to play him as the left sided centre back but Katic has been playing well since the start of the season. It’s Goldson that has been making the errors.

I mean Helander and Edmunson are better. Goldson has been particularly erratic and Katic on occasion. Time will tel but i think if SG has any sense he will bench them both.
livie have again started well and will be difficult to beat as they will no doubt play the block as well.

Marco
03-09-2019, 10:54
IMO, Goldson isn't what's required, or Rangers class. He'll do ok against lesser teams in the SPL, but be shown up against better opposition, especially in Europe.

I think both Katic and Barisic are good, but need a reliable and compatible partner, so hopefully for you Helander's the answer. What would worry me is why Gerrard doesn't seem to rate him ahead of Goldson, as normally managers are only too keen to showcase their big new signings.

Anyway, I'll judge him when I see him playing!

Marco.

The team was winning and not losing goals so it would be difficult to change them. If he did and it went pear shaped he and the new players would get blame. They didn't play well, lost two goals etc so should be changed.

Marco
03-09-2019, 11:24
Sure I get that, but I thought Helander would've been a stick-on to start the season, or was he signed after the games had kicked off?

he wasn't 100% fit compared to rest of team when he came and didnt have our preseason so been on catch up. Think he will play more now tho....presuming he plays ok. what Ive seen of him he looks decent

Good explanation here from BBC Scotland's Michael Stewart on where Rangers went wrong on Sunday, and what Celtic did right to stop them playing: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49537832

Scroll down past the Celtic bit, and play the video shown. What he's saying is spot on!

Ah I see, didn't know about that. Such things don't bother me at all, when it applies the other way. I listen to 'Celtic haters', just as much as 'Rangers haters', and if they're right and make a valid point, I'll acknowledge it:)

For example, Derek Ferguson talks a lot of sense on some his YouTube videos, where he teams up with Macca, called 'Right in the Coupon". See here:

Worth a watch!

You might have to rewind it to the beginning.

In the main I will listen to the pundits well apart from Chris Sutton, who just annoys me. I usually enjoy what Derek Ferguson has to say on Saturday afternoon on Radio Scotland.

Marco

Yeah, same here. I like Chris Sutton, though, but not just because he's a Celtic man, but because he's outspoken and opinionated, which I thoroughly approve of. I *detest* wishy-washy fence sitters, devoid of a personality, or anyone who's too 'nice' (read as, boring as fuck)!

No, let's hear what you have to say [spit it out], even if I vehemently disagree, is my motto. I even enjoy listening to Ally McCoist or Andy Goram, when they speak about football: two diehard Rangers men, but also two people I highly respect, as I like WINNERS!

Can never accuse Sutton of sitting on the fence that's for sure.

McCoist has always been entertaining, as for Goram well that's another matter great keeper but as an after dinner speaker that's a whole different matter.

I often see Alan Brazil around canary wharf grabbing a beer or 12. Chatted to him a couple of times and considering he must have to talk about football to strangers constantly as well as on air, hes a thoroughly decent bloke.

Over the years I have attended many black tie events/sportman's dinners, Burn's supper and Andy Goram is the worst I have ever heard speak, I can swear as much as the next person but he takes it to another level, probably didn't help as he was fairly pissed the night I heard him speak, they couldn't shut him up fast enough.

Marco

I see, so he's a bit of a potty mouth? Could be entertaining I guess, in small doses... I still like him though, as he was arguably the best goalkeeper the Scottish league has ever seen, and a winner/diehard player for his club. Even as a Celtic supporter, I admire that.

Sure it can happen, and I hope he makes a full recovery ASAP, but I detest that type of behaviour, and had a Celtic player (or anyone else) done it, I'd have been saying the same thing.

What's he got a two-match ban too, even when he's back fit?

You'd imagine that bans would start after you're fit, otherwise it's a non-punishment, as you're unable to play anyway when you're injured. It has to be treated as a separate thing,

Lol... That's not what I meant. If he's injured, he's injured, so banning him from playing while he's unable to play is pointless.

Therefore, he should serve his ban once he's fit again to play. So let him sit out the required amount of matches under the ban then, otherwise he'll only have been punished by his own reckless stupidity!

its same thing tho.. club then say he is fit.. you ban him, but he is not fit.. how do you prove it.. a medical? as I say I dont know answer for sure but i think you just serve ban when unfit...BUT I have asked the question so hope i get an answer today

Marco
04-09-2019, 09:37
Lol - asked whom the question?

Sorry, for me it's simple. The club is told that they cannot play Jordan Jones for the duration of his ban, once he's been declared fit and ready for team selection. The medical staff at Rangers (and Gerrard) will know when that is, the same as they would with any other injured player.

If proof is of his fitness, or otherwise, is required, then the SFA can request to see his medical report. I would object very strongly to him getting away with any proper punishment for his ASSULT on Bauer, simply because the brainless idiot got injured in the process!!

That as may be, but there's only one LOGICAL way of looking at it.

The injury Jordan Jones sustained from said 'tackle' was entirely self-inflicted, and therefore has nothing to do with any punishment from the SFA he, or any other player, would face in those circumstances, had they NOT been injured in the process.

Therefore, given that fact, *how* is Jones being punished twice by the SFA...??

That logic is akin to a murderer injuring himself badly whilst killing someone, and subsequently being unable to work again because of said injury, then escaping jail for said murder, because it would mean that he was being 'punished twice'...

Interesting about your "private forum"... So is your friend a conclusive voice in such matters -what are his connections with Rangers?:)

See the edit I've made to my last post about the mangled logic!

Moreover, if the viewpoint you've stated is taken and becomes actuality, it would set a very dangerous precedent, by sending out the message to other players that it's ok to physically assault someone on the football field, as you'll get away with being banned, if you subsequently injure yourself badly...

That simply cannot be how it is.

Noted on the private forum. Sounds like fun. It will certainly be interesting to see what he says, and more importantly what *actually happens* to Jones, in respect of his ban. I'll be following that one closely.

You could be right, but Russia were the better team in the first half and created more chances than Scotland, once they scored. That guy Dzyuba looks deadly and has been a real handful!

Scotland are undoubtedly a better team, under Clarke, but are defo lightweight up front, and so it amazes me that Naismith makes the squad but not Griffiths, despite him playing less football!

Yes I know that Griffiths hasn't been playing regularly for Celtic, but he's played more games for them than Naismith has for Hearts, so that's a bizarre decision from Clarke - and it's one that might come back and bite him on the bum. If Griffo had been on the bench, he's always liable to come on and do a job, especially from free kicks.

At the moment, unless things change in the second half, I think we'll be lucky to get a draw, and indeed will probably need to score again, as I think Russia will. I think that if you gave Clarke 1-1 right now, he's snap your hand off!

I think Scotland could score again, but if Russia do it's defo over. It was the right decision to bring Christie on, as he's very direct and likes driving at defenders.

But Griffo should've been on the bench and available to come on, especially for free kicks! Russia are a quality side, and considerably above our current level. They'll give Belgium a run for their money in this group.

Clearly, even a country such as Belgium aren't afraid of appointing foreign coaches... I'd defo say that Scotland's next manager, whoever that may be, should be foreign. We nearly went down that route with Michael O'Neill.

Players have to take as much flak as they have not performed across the board.

Agreed, although Christie was excellent and not only worked his socks off, but created some problems for the Belgians with his direct and energetic style of play, winning a few corners and free kicks in the process, which had Griffiths been on the park. instead of Snodgrass, we might've scored from!;)

Mulgrew was also his usual steady self, and always a threat at set pieces, and Marshall did ok and could've done nothing to prevent any of the goals. Plus, Armstrong also made an impact when he came on, nearly setting up a goal with his first few touches.. So the Celtic (or ex-Celtic) contingent there performed ok. However, both Forrest and McGregor are currently underperforming in a Scotland shirt.

They combined really well before against Cyprus, etc, to win us the play-off place, which is now our only chance of qualifying for the Euros, but you wonder that, given the demanding season (and all the important games) that lie ahead for them for Celtic, are they really pushing themselves fully for Scotland? I think that both have recently been playing within themselves and don't want to risk injury. Could that also be the case with the likes of Robertson and McTominay, as they too have bigger fish to fry with Liverpool and Man Utd respectively.

And that's one of the problems we now face as a nation... In the lowly position we currently find ourselves in, is it now the case that for our top players, the attraction of pulling on a Scotland shirt just isn't the same as it once was, before the dawn of Champions League football, with the huge rewards that brings, and when Scotland used to qualify for major tournaments and so players then had something worth playing for, and as such is viewed as an 'inconvenience'?

No-one would admit that of course, but in my view that's as much a part of the problem we currently face, as the failings of any of the recent managers we've had. Because regardless of the manager, it's largely the same group of players delivering the same poor performances, and subsequent bad results, and for me that's no coincidence. We have to address, and try and fix, the malaise that's been present in our national squad for a very long time.

Therefore, for me, we need to look at the players selected, perhaps by starting to cap good Scottish players (or those eligible to play for Scotland), capable of doing a job in certain positions, who aren't involved in the demands of playing for Celtic, Rangers, Liverpool or Man Utd, and have something to prove?

Perhaps they would have more fire in their bellies, as once was the case, when pulling on a Scotland shirt? Plus, it might give a kick up the arse to the 'superstars' (I use that description entirely flippantly), when they're being dropped for someone they'd consider as their inferior... Because, no matter how good the manager is, you're not going to win games when the hearts of your key players aren't in it.

The other problem we have currently, is our paucity of good strikers, which we once had in abundance, and in that respect, the Scotland team has become a victim of the fact that the main strikers at Rangers and Celtic, Griffiths aside, are all foreign - and in the case of Griffiths, he's not getting enough game-time for that reason [kept out the team by Edouard], so can't realistically be selected for Scotland, although he should be ahead of Naismith, who's played even less for Hearts!! So Clarke's decision there baffles me:scratch:

I have little doubt that, even though he's not being playing much for Celtic, Griffiths would've have made an impact in the two games against Russia and Belgium. His delivery from set pieces alone would've virtually guaranteed that. The other thing is that when your team doesn't have a major threat up front, or someone who can lead the line and hold the ball up well on his own, it puts added pressure on the midfield and defence, as they're constantly under pressure.

It goes back to the old saying of 'the best form of defence is attack' - a truism because, if you've got the ball and are doing something positive with it, then the opposition aren't!

We also badly lack leadership on the pitch, and in that respect are hugely missing Scott Brown's influence. There are too many players currently in the Scotland squad who don't have his type of desire or winning mentality, or who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. That situation needs addressing, first and foremost.

In that respect, if we had another 10 Ryan Christies, with his type of skill and endeavour in every position, we'd have no problems!

However, for the striking problem to change, our top clubs need to bring more good players through their ranks, and not just go out and spend millions of pounds on foreigners - but then we go back to the problem of the pressure that the likes of Rangers are Celtic are under to perform well in Europe and win every domestic game, and so instant success is mandatory. It's a vicious circle, but unless something fundamental is done about it, then internationally, Scotland will continue to be a joke for years to come....

Lol, not quite.. Trust your blue-nosed bias to see it that way!:D Did you miss my (entirely justified) criticism of Forrest and McGregor?:ner:

However, it's no secret that some of Scotland's best recent performances were achieved when the team was filled with motivated, in-form Celtic players. That's undeniable, as the results they achieved speak for themselves. Plus, Celtic have been head and shoulders the best team in Scotland, for the last 8 years, so it's only natural that many of their players should be selected for the international team.

Therefore, it's always a good idea to select quality players who are used to playing together domestically, and understand each other's game, regardless of which team it is they play for!;)

More importantly, what did you think of the rest of the points I made, specifically about capping more players, who could do a good job, but don't have the demands of playing for the likes of Liverpool or Man Utd?

For me, aside from the fact that they can't play the same style of football for the national team as they do at club level, and yes that's significant, it's no 'accident' that the likes of Robertson and McTominay aren't the same players for Scotland. And others come under that category.

Marco.

Not sure there is a solution to Scotland. Our mentality seems to be lacking(as is our ability).. Many countries has surpassed us by being better TEAMS, with spirit.

Which is why I say give some of the good Scottish players in the rest of the SPL (and English leagues) a chance, who don't have the demands of playing for the really big clubs, and may have something to offer and prove to people?

The fact is, if you don't have to worry about Champions League or Europa Cup games, etc, or winning every match, as is the case at the biggest clubs, then outside of playing once a week for your club team (excluding domestic cup competitions), you can devote all of your energies to international matches.

That could certainly make a difference to creating the SPIRIT you mention. Quite simply, you can't have spirit if you're too worried about injuring yourself, for being able to play arguably more important games for your club!

But any such players brought in would have to be good enough, read as at least able to make us more organised and harder to beat. That's our BIGGEST problem/failing at the moment. Forget silky football; we're too much of a soft touch, which is the worst thing of all, considering the type of players we've had in the past, some of whom you've just listed!

The answer to your question about when we last 'bossed' a big team, it would've been our performances against France and Italy, during the Euros in 2007, with the likes of James McFadden. Those were the last days of a proper Scotland team, which had not only skill, but spirit and endeavour. You don't need to go back to the 70s to find a good Scotland team, although unlike back then, we certainly no longer have any world-class players.

Scotland team in France 2007:

Gordon, Hutton, McManus, Weir, Alexander, McCulloch, Ferguson, Fletcher (Pearson 26), Brown, Hartley, McFadden.

A team packed full, not only of skill, but most importantly LEADERS, WINNERS/fighters [both on the pitch and in the dressing room], who had a steely determination not to lose at any cost, and crucially who WANTED to give, and GAVE their all for Scotland, particularly those I've highlighted! And which formed the beating heart of the team. *That* is what we simply don't have now, but which I don't believe doesn't exist or can't be nurtured.

Also in 2013, against England at Wembley... The 3-2 game, and with two spectacular free-kicks scored by YOU KNOW WHO!;)

I didn't see the game, but from what I've read Kevin de Bruyne had one of those games.
Set up three goals and got for himself.
When he's like that it will be extremely difficult to play against any side he's a part of.
His vision and pinpoint accurate passes and crosses are a nightmare to defend against.
One man doesn't make a team, but any team with a player of KdB's standing will get opportunities.

We (City) missed him for big chunks of last season, but somehow managed not to lose it completely.
We coped.

Don't beat yourselves up over last night

I'm sure Jeremie will prove to be a good signing for Celtic.
People forget that developing and moving young players on is a part of City's business dealings, and from what I hear it's quite profitable.
One thing you do know is that Jeremie has had extremely good coaching - the first team coaching staff get involved with the younger players from time to time, and the way the first team plays guides the way the youngsters are coached.

He'll be a very good player - it's down to your lot to bring him on further.

Marco

Yup, I understand all that, and you're right. I'm sure he will do well, once he's deemed as ready to fight for his place in the first team. We've not had too many 'duds' from Man City, with players such as Guidetti, Denayer, Boyata and Roberts, in recent times all doing not too badly at Celtic!;)

Duds is seldom the correct term to use.
As always, it's down to whether the player in question fits in with what the manager/coach wants to see.

Talking of Roberts, he has a day off this coming Saturday.
Premier League rules say that a loan player cannot play against their "parent" club.
UEFA take a different view, which is why he played against City for Celtic a few seasons ago.

Indeed, which is why I used inverted commas. You get my point, though. The players we've had from City were all good to start with, and also went onto become a big success for us. That's no 'happy accident', and reflects well on both City and Celtic.

Lol - it was obviously a sore point for you when UEFA took that view and Roberts scored for us at your ground!:D TBH, they (both the EPL and UEFA) should agree on one rule and apply it across the board.

Those two games, incidentally, between City and Celtic in the CL were superb, particularly the 3-3 draw at Celtic Park, when it really mattered.

And we've achieved good results in Europe in recent times against other top English sides, which is why I laugh at the 'doom and gloom' merchants (particularly our resident St Johnstone fan, I forget his name), who pops in now and then and goes on about how Celtic (and Rangers) are crap, when judged on a bigger platform, usually after his team have just been gubbed by one or the other.....:eyebrows:

Well, clearly not (if you study the stats) when drawn against English opposition in Europe, as we always raise our game accordingly, in order to prove a point! I'll leave you to guess what that point is....;)

faddy was a big game player no doubt, but often didnt turn up for others. was a good player on his game. think when smith had the team he did what he did with rangers laterly in his tenure(thinking europa final etc) and that was making them so stuffy to play against the opposition got irritated and lost shape.. McLeish was the manager during that campaign, daftee, and for the double over France...

I agree with what you're saying, but there is much more to it than that, which I've ably highlighted. We currently lack players with true leadership qualities and a winning mentality, and which we had in abundance during the era in question, not just in the 70s and 80s. And with the right decisions taken in future, we *can* get that back, and which would improve us.

Btw, have you got something against Leigh Griffiths? It's just that you never make any comment about him whatsoever, anytime he's mentioned.... So what gives, bro? You're also similar towards Scott Brown. You do realise that you need to leave your Rangers-oriented feelings, in that respect, behind when judging players playing for Scotland?;)

Ok, it was just that you mentioned Walter Smith in the same discussion, although I take your point about him.

Well, that's the first time I've seen you give Griffiths any credit!:eyebrows:;)

Granted he's not been playing much, but he's had more games recently than Naismith, so can you fathom then how Naismith made the squad, yet Griffiths didn't? It makes no sense whatsoever, especially when you need goals, and even a not fully match-sharp Griffiths, coming on as a substitute, would be guaranteed to do more at set pieces than anyone else in the squad!

Sure, but not even Griffiths as a substitute? His omission from the squad was an unfathomable decision by Clarke, and also in my view a fatal error.

Btw, I also rate Naismith, but he doesn't have the qualities of Griffiths in the areas mentioned, plus more importantly he didn't feature in any of the two games we've just played, so you wonder why he was there, as like Griffiths, he certainly wouldn't have been match-sharp, or perhaps even fit.

 Well, was expecting a mauling, but as we all know, football is a funny old game! We'll probably get thumped by Burnley next week!

Joking aside, the team spirit and "never say die" attitude that Farke has created is amazing really - I am sure we've ridden our luck today, so unlucky Man City, but I'm not complaining you've had an off day! :D

Internationals is where is went wrong.
If I were paranoid I would claim that both UEFA and FIFA were conspiring against us.
Thankfully I'm not paranoid about it.
Nicholas Otamendi was directly to blame for the 3rd Norwich goal. That he'd had to fly in from LA after a fucking friendly has nothing to do with it!
Kyle Walker not being awake and just standing still didn't help either, 'cos the 2nd goal would have been offside if he had.

Well done Norwich City.

I wondered how long it would be before Vincent Kompany's departure would expose our defensive frailties even more.
The guy was a massive influence on the team when he was injured and unable to play, and an inspirational leader when he was on the field.

The way the fixtures pan out means that we have a potentially tricky match at Everton at the end of the month, and a fairly settled list of games all the way to November 9th (I'm sure that the time of the game will be changed, and possibly the date), when we play Liverpool at Anfield.
That gives us a fair bit of time to work on things.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Fernandinho step into the breach, and Stones move up to defensive mid.
We should see Mendy gradually being given game time as well, so that could give us further options.

Away to Shaktar next - that will be a tough one.

Yeah, loads of football still to be played mate, and I'm sure you'll be winning many more games than you'll be losing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this three in a row you're going for? If so, and you achieve it, has that ever been done before in the EPL?

And yes, Shakhtar [don't forget the 'h';)] will be a tough nut to crack at home. We've played them there before a few times and they're very attacking minded and play at a high tempo. However, I think you'll have enough to win the game, and perhaps by a couple of goals.

Marco

Yeah Chris, I thought that might be the answer... What about if you were asked the same question again, after having won title number 4 (in a row)? Would having 5 titles mean more than a CL win? City have never won the CL, so that has to be a big priority for a club of their standing.

For me, with Celtic, when/if we secure 10-in-a-row, after that the priority will be achieving notable success in Europe, ahead of any doubles or trebles.

Of course, while there is only one qualifying place for the CL available in Scotland, winning the league title remains paramount, but if/once we get 10, I'd trade winning the league the following season, for reaching the last 16 of the CL or, say, the quarter-finals of the Europa League - or certainly anything greater than that!

Much as it galls me to say it, if winning the Premier League and winning the Champions League in the same season is the sign of greatness, then the only great team in England is Manchester United.
Nobody else has done it.
And don't forget - the Premier League and The Champions League both came into being in 1992.
Prior to 1992 the European Cup was a knockout competition.

You have to temper things with United falling into being a shambles following Ferguson's retirement.

The Sheik's money has made it all possible, but it hasn't bought success. That had to be worked for, and it continues to be worked on.

Stadium capacity is currently 55,000ish, and attendances are not far short of that.
Expansion at the other end of the ground is on the cards, which will add another 7000 seats.
The official attendance record is 54,693 (Manchester City vs Leicester City, 6 February 2016), but attendances are often 54,000 plus.

The one thing I fail to understand is the 80 minuters - the folk that up and go home dead on 80 minutes, to "beat the crowds" - we've won many a game at the death, and yet they still do it

That's highly debatable... I would argue that without his money, you wouldn't have been able to sign the players you have done, or attracted a top manager like Pep, all of which has significantly contributed to the success you've worked to achieve.

It would certainly have been very difficult otherwise, as it's no accident that the currently most successful clubs in the world have spent the most money.

And you're right - without the the big money we wouldn't have signed the players we did early on in the Sheik's ownership.

Not so often as to see a pattern emerging.

They must be making a run to the car park/tram stop/bus stop because you can't move quickly once the final whistle blows.
I chill, sit down after the game, and wait for just about everyone to leave the stand before I make a move towards the exit, and I'm normally driving off site an hour after the game. It's something that I've just grown to accept.

Ha.... Surprised that Norwich have spent so little, TBH, as quite a few clubs in the Championship [where they've just come from] have spent big money.

Norwich are a club with no debt - I think that's Delia's doing - and as one of the "yo-yo" clubs, (we'll be the worst ever if we go down this season - for the record of being relegated five times) I think the board won't gamble on borrowing millions when we get promoted - and rightly so in my opinion, though you could argue that if we spend some dosh we'll stay up, but history has shown with other clubs that is a big gamble... Yes, you get the parachute payments, but unless you get back up straight away the wage bills will be crippling.

My biggest worry isn't so much the players we've lost (Maddison, Brady, Redmond to name the top 3) which we need to sell to keep afloat, but more so for what the future will hold - Pukki, obviously, will be a target - and others - but the manager too with what he's achieved will be on more than a few watchlists I would expect... :(

Never really thought about that Chris, but makes a lot of sense. When you're a minnow, you don't realise the extra that goes into the success of a big club. Norwich just don't have the global support or glamour - but having said that, neither did Man City 20 years ago? So these things can change, but being situated in England's cul-de-sac doesn't help us.

Just watched MOTD2 and fabulous montage of Delia's "Let's be havin' you" half-time rally when you beat us despite her best efforts - seeing it again she'd definitely been taking too many sniffs of the cooking sherry!

I don't anyone at City realised how much more was required to scale the heights.
The Sheik did, and went and put resources in place to do what was required.
It's just over 11 years since the takeover, and things have changed enormously, and changed very much for the better.

It has been an interesting, enjoyable, and occasionally frustrating ride.

Glad to see you're ok! Where's Robin - maybe at the game?

Yup, you've recovered well from that penalty miss. So unlike Tav, whom you can normally put your mortgage on from the spot!

Superb goal from Ojo. At the moment there's only one team in it - and that's Rangers. Helander looks like quality, as I suspected he would be, and should've been in the team earlier!

Morelos is running them ragged, and was so close to scoring...... More goals to come!!

Team seen to be doing OK. Morelos getting little protection either. Nowt new there either.

The Dutch will come out differently I'm sure.

Marco

Yeah, and we should've won. Elyounoussi was inches away from giving us the lead in the first half, and we were denied a stonewall penalty in the second half, before the one we were given and scored from, then Christie could've won if for us in the last minute, but shot wide...

Good performance overall though, especially defensively, where Julien was once again immense, and Forster pulled off a couple of superb saves. Anyway, it's been a good start for both of our teams, so long may it continue!

He's a good player.
I saw quite a bit of him a few years ago, but he struggled a bit adapting to the next level of play, so he got sent out on loan and did the rounds.
I hope he does well for you.

Ah, out enjoying yourself hopefully, not working?:)

Yeah good results last night for our teams. I'd have taken a point in Rennes if you'd given it to me beforehand, and I'm sure Neil Lennon would've. too... The shock result in our group was Cluj beating Lazio at home!

It proves that they're no mugs, and gives some more substance to their 'shock' defeat of Celtic. It's going to be a *very* interesting game when we play them next at Celtic Park....:eyebrows:

Btw, Chris, told you you'd beat Shakhtar by a few goals!;) Forgot to mention it.

They were quick on the break, but fairly toothless at the sharp end.
Our defence had a quiet night, and they only had one proper breakthrough, which ended up being directed at our keeper instead of either side of him.

Back to the grind - Watford tomorrow.

8-0 at full time.
We should have scored more - the only thing that stopped us was finishing inaccuracy.
Fair due to Watford - they kept coming at us when anyone else would park the bus and attempt damage limitation.

Listening to the city game cycling along the canal today, it seems Kevin D was brilliant again according to mr Waddle. Nice to see Sergio pop another one in as well to keep up his record this season.
What a player he s been for city over the years. Bit of gallows humour from Watford fans as well it seems with minor hysteria erupting every time they touched the ball at one point. Bless.

KdB was brilliant. It was only fair that he get his name on the scoresheet - He came bloody close to getting another couple for himself.
Sergio - what can I say? Today's goal was his 100th league goal for City at The Etihad. It's his 240th for the club in all competitions. Hungry until the end, he came came bloody close to getting another couple too.

It was good to see Benjamin Mendy get a decent run out, although he looked well off the pace.
It's no surprise, considering how long he's been out of contention because of knee injury.
A few months of gentle game time conditioning will do him good.

Also nice to see Angelino, Garcia, and Cancelo putting in decent preformances.

Yeah, I *totally* agree, but it's also a results business, and they're desperate for points. Wait until you see the defensive wall Kilmarnock put up against us later at Celtic Park!

Anyway, St Johnstome could've been 1-0 up, through O'Halloran. McGregor made a great save.

I also note that Anthony Ralston, on loan from Celtic, is playing for Saints... He's a good player. Physically strong on the ball and quick.

Hi Brian,

Ultimate replaces the old UHD. Yup, 4K high-def with Dolby Atmos surround sound... On a good AV system, it's like 'being there':)

Anyway, good result for Rangers. 0-4 in the end, although my prediction of 1-3 could've came to fruition, if St Johnstone had been awarded a goal that defo had crossed the line, and which may not have resulted in Rangers scoring their fourth...

Where is VAR when it's needed!

Without better technology we won’t know if the ball crossed the line, remember it’s the whole ball.

Marco
22-09-2019, 14:41
Sure I agree, which is why I think that VAR should be available for all SPL and EPL matches involving the top teams, plus European games. We've got the technology now to END all the speculation with these decisions, so it should be used!

And IMO, if VAR had been applied in the above instance, it would've shown that the whole of the ball (just) had crossed the line. Anyway, even if the goal had been given, it wouldn't have changed the result, as even at 3-1 Rangers would've been in full control and gone on to see out a victory.

We won 3-1 at home against Kille, despite going a goal behind, against the run of play. Superb second-half comeback, including a penalty save from Forster, who now he's match-sharp, is starting to look like the truly top keeper he's always been.

I think both of our teams suffered a bit of a euro hangover in the first half, but then our class shone through, to secure the 3 three points! I'll watch the Celtic game later on Celtic TV:cool:

SG says the view across touchline was that it didnt go over, although ive not seen it... Im not a big fan of var, as it is inclined to break game up and takes the responsibility off refs to do their jobs. It would also appear that it gets it wrong about as often as it gets it right as tbh its just someone else making a decision

Sure, but I'm talking about purely from the POV of removing all element of doubt about goal-line decisions. Quite simply, just like in Tennis, VAR would prove conclusively, one way or another, whether the ball had crossed the line - and *that* is what it should be used for in all football matches, played at the top level domestically and in Europe, whenever such contentious situations occur.

Well done to Rangers for pumping Aberdeen 5-0, which TBH, for them was long overdue! And in the process reducing our lead to one point, whist also improving their goal difference.

I had a funny feeling we'd drop points today on our bogey ground against Hibs, and it turned out to be the case with a 1-1 draw. We played ok and were denied a stonewall penalty in the second half, but Hibs thoroughly deserved their hard-fought draw, and were defensively very solid.

Lots of twists and turns to come yet this season, and I've seen nothing yet that suggests that the fight for the title won't go down to the wire... Anyway guys, enjoy it, as no doubt many other Rangers fans will tonight!
